Who Will Speak For Them?

We live in an area that prides itself on how environmentally friendly it is. People come up here from the city to see nature at its finest. Living here with nature is why we chose this area -- with the wildlife, native plants and creatures big and small.

When we drive the highways and county roads we know that there are birds, frogs, bees, and deer that all live right next to these roads. Many of these roads cross over rivers and creeks. The dips in the rock that covers most of this area are swampy, and full of all kinds of life. The wildlife moves without boundaries to get food and to raise their young.

We are lucky to have a voice and are free to voice our concerns of how our environment is affected and handled. We have to be the voice for all the creatures that live here. They can’t tell us how they are affected by what we do. Turtles make nests on the sides of the roads, deer drink from the creeks and small rivers that are next to our roads. And crickets, frogs, toads and so many others all share the same places we see next to our roads.

Living in a time when trust is on the decline,

it makes it hard to see what is reality. We just can’t believe how spraying products like “Roundup” can be permitted. It isn’t just the spraying but where it is done.

To spray over creeks and rivers is just wrong in so many ways. To see long lines of spray right at the edge of swamps is horrifying. Besides the wildlife, they spray next to dwellings too.

Take a drive on County Road 121 and see it for yourself. Drive County Road 45 and see how many places they sprayed next to swamps and rivers. Drive the other roads in Kawartha and stop to look at the dead plants. Look at how these places are mostly over water and swamps. In some places the creeks are where cattle or other livestock drink the water. How will these dead plants affect creatures that use them for bedding or to make their home?

There must be provincial guidelines on the use of these dangerous products where it pertains to rivers, creeks and swamps. All these places that are sprayed have no signage to tell people that it has been used.

There should be no region in Ontario using this. There is all kinds of equipment that can do the job. There must also be other ways of keeping these areas free of mostly grass and weeds.

What is needed is to get the politicians to drive these roads and see for themselves how much damage they are allowing to our environment. We don’t need more studies or committees to look into this. It’s better to stop using them entirely now. The future of humans and the creatures around us need this to stop.

Trent Lakes Public Library is running a fundraiser to help purchase a new seating area for the children’s section of the Buckhorn branch. People have the chance to win one of five original art pieces done by award winning artists Eugenie and Henry Fernandes, both local artists. The pictures from Eugenie’s books also come with a copy of the book that contains the picture.

Tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5. Tickets are available at the Buckhorn Branch and Cavendish Branch of the Trent Lakes Public Library.

The draw will take place on September 21.

All artwork is available to view during operating hours at the Buckhorn Branch of the Trent Lakes Public Library.

WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER TO APPEAR AT SPEAKER SERIES

The Friends of the Dunsford Library invite all wildlife enthusiasts to attend the fourth talk in their Kawartha Speaker Series. On August 20, Dave Ellis, a talented wildlife photographer, will show his impressive images of local animal and bird life.

Based in the Omemee area, Dave will share his collection of images of our colourful Kawartha wildlife -- from the red fox, to the snowy owl, to the green heron. He has photographed all of them and many more species, with the help of his wife Astrid.

The aim of the Kawartha Speaker Series is to help keep Dunsford, and its library, on the map by highlighting the area’s rich heritage, both natural and historical. Everyone is invited to attend at the Dunsford Branch of the Kawartha Lakes Library in the Dunsford Community Centre, from 7 to 9pm on August 20.

Admission is by donation to the Friends of the Dunsford Library. Pre-registration is encouraged at 705-793-3037 or to KawarthaSpeakers@gmail.com.

KAMA SUTRA AT THE LAB

A VIBRANT VILLAGE

The Vibrant Village Committee in Bobcaygeon has been working hard to beautify the community with a gorgeous display of painted paddles on Bolton, King and Canal Streets. This year, the 72 paddles have been mounted on new brackets purchased with money donated by Kawartha Dairy and Crazy Monkey Tree Service.

Last summer was the first year for the paddle project in Bobcaygeon. This year’s committee members Carol-Anne Eldridge and Emalee Kidman (and their very understanding husbands) enticed local artists, service groups, schools, nursing homes and other people and organizations to paint a paddle for display.

MUSIC COUNCIL NOTES

Mother Nature has been very good for Concerts in the Park so far this summer with lovely sunny skies and no sign of rain. Hopefully, August will be as nice.

Thank you to our wonderful audiences who have come out to support us. Thank you to all the sponsors and advertisers for helping to put these concerts together. Thank you, in particular, to Kathryn Terry for all the work involved in finding the performers and hiring them. Thank you to Roy Croft for his weekly commitment to produce the wonderful sounds from the performers. Thank you to the Lions Club for providing the audience with an opportunity to not cook supper on a hot evening! Have you tried the delicious hamburgers and Kawartha Dairy ice cream?

There are only a few concerts left to enjoy. The children seem to have a ball showing off their dancing talents. They are such fun to watch. The adults, on the other hand, express themselves by toe tapping and hand clapping in time with the music.

I should mention that at the July 25 concerts, partly sponsored by Pinecrest Nursing Home, some of the residents were able to attend. Thank you to the staff for transporting them to the locks.

Photographs are taken during the concerts, many of which are posted on our Facebook page -- The Bobcaygeon Music Council. If you were there, or missed it, you can see what fun we had.

Celebrating 42 years, the award winning Buckhorn Festival of the Arts (formerly the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival) has a time-honoured reputation for curating a gallery-quality fine art festival that appeals to a broad range of art enthusiasts and collectors. Health & Wellness CHAMPISSAGE – INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE

The gift of touch by way of head massage (“champi” in Hindi) has been practiced for more than 5,000 years as an integral ingredient of India’s rich tradition of Ayurveda preventative health care and generational family life. Ayurveda “knowledge of life” is based on the holistic principle of body, mind and spirit.

Indian Head Massage works with the upper 5th, 6th, and 7th chakras (energy centres) to balance all body systems and unblock and stimulate the flow of vital energy. This firm, deliberate, yet gentle massage, along with warm essential oils, focuses on the upper back, shoulders, neck, scalp and face.

These are areas that accumulate high levels of stress

TRAVELING WITH HEARING AIDS

Traveling with hearing aids can require some extra preparation. When packing, remember extra batteries, domes and wax guards, a cleaning kit, and any Bluetooth accessories needed for your device. It is best to wear your hearing aids when flying, as you will be less likely to lose them or to miss important information from your flight crew. Hearing aids will not set off metal detectors or body scanner alarms, but it is always a good idea to inform security staff that you are wearing them. When driving, it is best to keep distraction noises, like music or audio books, at low volumes to avoid missing sounds from outside your car that could indicate safety issues.

While traveling, you may wear your hearing aids longer than you normally would, so you may go through batteries quicker. If you run out of batteries, you may not be able to buy new ones easily, so bring more than you think you’ll need. Your daily routine will probably be thrown off while you travel. Make sure to bring your cleaning kit and stick to your normal daily cleaning schedule. If you are concerned about your hearing, stop

CKL ONTARIO HEALTH TEAM ENTERS DEVELOPMENT PHASE

A submission to form a City of Kawartha Lakes Ontario Health Team (OHT) to better coordinate care and services in the City of Kawartha Lakes has progressed to the status of ‘In Development’ as announced by the Ministry of Health in July.

It is the provincial government’s intention to better connect the health care system through the phased implementation of Ontario Health Teams.

Ontario Health Teams are groups of providers and organizations that are clinically and fiscally accountable for delivering a full and coordinated continuum of care to a defined geographic population.

The designation of ‘In Development’ means that the Ministry will provide additional resources as the partners further develop their submission.

Co-led by Ross Memorial Hospital and Community Care Health and Care Network (formerly Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes), the collaborating partners for the City of Kawartha Lakes OHT include community and health care organizations.

The initial focus of the OHT is enhancement of coordinated care and services to frail seniors over 65 years who live alone or have a poor support network, and who have been hospitalized within the last year.

As the work of the OHT evolves, the scope of care and services as well as the patient/client/resident focus will expand.

Bobcaygeon Craft Beer & Food Festival

The 4th Annual Bobcaygeon Craft Beer & Food Festival is set for Saturday, August 17 from noon to 7pm at Kawartha Settlers’ Village. The event will feature craft breweries, cideries, food vendors, and local artists.

Good Stories from Curve Lake First Nation

Visiting Shoodeh

When I was young, I would often go with my grandmother and her brother, my great uncle Madden, to visit with people in the community and have tea.

These people who we visited were my grandparents’ age.

Madden and my grandmother did this often. Madden continued that right up until he passed.

One of the interesting characters that we visited was old ‘Shoodeh’. ‘Shoodeh’ still lived in one of the original log houses that were built in order to attract First Nation people onto this land here.

The government didn’t like them being “nomadic” or “wandering” people (as they put it) around the area because, at that time, settlers had moved in and had a different way of land ownership and there was no room for people to live on their land – in our own traditional way.

So they built these cabins and there’s old ‘Shoodeh’ living there. He was an old, old man. He lived in this log cabin and he would tell stories upon stories about his generation. Now he was born before Madden’s generation. And he would talk to me and talk to Madden about his generation, which would be the people that were adults around the time this First Nation was put together from, say, 1840 to 1865 which then is Confederation time. So he had his opinions about that.

What is interesting about that is even though he

went through these cultural trauma-inducing programs that were launched by the government, old ‘Shoodeh’ was a resilient old Michi Saagiig individual who took everything in stride. He adapted. Unfortunately, he had to do more adapting than the settlers.

Something interesting to note is that we call our grandfather MISHOOMIS and we call our great grandfather KOOBDEH and we call the great-great grandfather SHOODEH. The meaning of MISHOOMIS is a word that describes an older relative. KOOBDEH means “one who ties it all up” and I suspect SHOODEH means “a link to the past.” And these were very important people for passing on knowledge about how to live on the land and how to live morally.

The other interesting character who my grandmother and I used to visit was a woman who lived on the main road in Curve Lake. She had an interesting background.

Her father was related to ‘Shoodeh’, and he was old, too, and a ‘Shoodeh’ himself. But that man married an Irish woman from the Lindsay area. She used to talk about that -- how her mother, who was this Irish girl, moved into Curve Lake and learned the language and spoke the language even better than the locals did. She was, in fact, always asked by locals who were very fluent speakers, of the finer points of the language. They would ask her.

So she lived a very Nishnaabe lifestyle, she fit right in. She had a sister who also married into Curve Lake.

They both married brothers…but that is another story.

PARSNIPS IN THE WILD

If you have driven Highway 7 between Peterborough and Ottawa, you might have noticed a plant that resembles the herb Dill, with a yellow flower, growing plentifully along the highway and in the median. It is an invasive species called Wild Parsnip, a plant that is native to Eurasia and was likely brought over by early settlers because the roots are edible. Due to climate change, with its very warm weather, this plant has become a problem in most of the U.S. and parts of Canada. Recently, it was declared a scourge in the Durham region, as well as here in City of Kawartha Lakes.

Wild Parsnip is in the family of plants which includes carrots, celery, parsley, parsnip, Angelica and Queen Anne’s Lace. The sap of the Wild Parsnip, like Giant Hogweed, can cause a chemical burn brought on by an increase in the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight.

It has changed its appearance and is no longer flowering. It is identifiable now by clusters of fluffy looking beige to brownish seed heads. Stems and leaves are turning yellow. Anything with a white flower now is Queen Anne’s Lace.

The plants have many yellow flower heads which produce a large number of seeds and can grow up to 5 feet in height. It is commonly spread by mowing practices, in which the equipment travels long distances along highways and trails, distributing the seeds over a wide area. Undisturbed, it will take over large areas, crowding out native plants. It can be controlled by pulling the plants, if there are not too many. The best time is before they go into seed (right around now). Roots are often shallow and plants may pull out of the ground easily, or if stalks are tough, they can be cut at ground level. Long sleeves, pants and gloves should be worn. Plants should be disposed of in the garbage, never composted.

AUTO SHOP CELEBRATES 20 YEARS

In November, 1999, Rob Duncan opened an automotive shop in Bobcaygeon where he detailed cars and sold car audio systems and accessories.

Today, 20 years later, Duncan’s Auto Service offers fullservice repair, maintenance and sales.

Over the years, the shop has been a co-op employer for all the high schools in the area. In fact, Chad Legge and Duane Black joined Rob in the shop fresh out of high school and continue the tradition of quality service set out by Rob in the early years.

LITTLE CANOES ON THE RIVER

If you wander to the Miskwaa Ziibi River at the Outdoor Art Gallery owned by artist Daniel Marlatt, you can take part in his latest project, the “Lil Red Canoe.”

Daniel carves small canoes out of scrap white pine wood (about 2” long and 3/4 “ wide) then soaks them in red wine to give them a unique red colour. These canoes are then released into the Miskwaa Ziibi River to make their way as far they can go.

On July 11, Daniel released the first canoe into the River and posted it on Facebook. Now, instead of it being a solitary venture, Daniel is inviting those visiting his gallery to release a canoe. He’s also started a daily blog.

None of the canoes have been found down river yet, but you can follow the journey on Facebook at Outdoor Art Gallery at the Miskwaa. You are also invited to drop into the Gallery at 250 Edwina Drive in Trent Lakes and join in the project.

ANIMAL APPEAL

Temperatures are not the only thing on the rise these days. So too is the frequency of local residents being bitten or scratched by animals, putting them at risk of rabies or other serious injuries.

So far this year, the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health has investigated approximately 300 incidents in which people were bitten or scratched by an animal, potentially exposing them to rabies. Just under two-thirds of these cases in Haliburton County, Northumberland County and the City of Kawartha Lakes have occurred since April 1st.

The Health Unit encourages people to be careful around wild animals and pets, especially as a bite or scratch can put them at risk of serious injury and potential exposure to rabies. When seeing any wild animal, Richard Ovcharovich, Manager of Environment Health with the HKPR District Health Unit recommends not to pet or approach it. “It’s best to enjoy animals from a distance,” he says. “If a wild animal is growling or showing aggressive behavior, back away slowly to gain distance from it. Never turn around and run. Avoid direct eye contact with the animal, as it is a sign of dominance that may provoke some animals to attack.”

Domestic pets like dogs should also be approached with caution, as they’re often involved in animal bite cases investigated by the Health Unit.

Pet owners should also be responsible by making sure their animals are leashed, under control, and discouraged from running free unless they are in a designated dog park. This can also be good for pets, as it may reduce their exposure to wild animals that may have rabies. Regular rabies vaccination of pets is also essential, Ovcharovich adds.

Last year, the Health Unit investigated 674 cases locally in which people were bitten or scratched by an animal.
