From my perch

Twelve million Canadians watched the Tragically Hip’s swan song concert, says the CBC, who broadcast it by all means available. Thousands gathered on Bolton Street to watch it. I was not one of them. I’ve been fated to continually miss the phenomenon that was this iconic Canadian band, who have meant so much to so many. I was co-parenting three young boys and trying to support our family when they first broke into popular consciousness. I didn’t have much time or energy left for pop music. One summer, a young friend of my kids kept incessantly singing a line from a song I didn’t know that: “That’s when the hornet stung me, and I had a feverish dream.” I finally heard it on the radio between laundry loads, but somehow thought for years it was a Talking Heads song. I only recently discovered Ahead by a Century was actually the Hip. Then there was New Orleans is Sinking, which I kept thinking was by

Spirit of the West (their song was Venice is Sinking). I did come to know—and love— the song Bobcaygeon, though. Who wouldn’t, living here? Buying a computer in Toronto one day, I gave my address to the young man at the counter. “Wow, Bobcaygeon,” he said. “I didn’t know that was a real place. Wait’ll I tell my girlfriend.” Then, when the simulcast was announced, I’d already committed to perform with my friend Al at Gamiing. It was a small crowd. I got home in time to catch the third encore on TV, and join my wife, crying on the couch. I’m a Johnny-come-lately when it comes to the Hip. Now I begin to see what I’ve been missing.

Finally it would be in the best interest of the public of Kawartha Lakes to hold a referendum on this issue with the municipal ballot in October 2018. City Hall Housing or aggregates? Pick one By Glenna Burns

When Trent Lakes council recently approved two new housing starts close to areas zoned for aggregate development (Schedule C lands), it pointed out the Catch-22 the municipality often finds itself facing. Housing or aggregates? TL’s dilemma is that it wants to encourage new housing and settlement to improve the tax base. But it also faces constant pressure from quarry developers, who seem to have the legislative backing of the province. Trent Lakes’ Official Plan maps out areas zoned for settlement, as well as provincially mandated areas zoned for mineral/ aggregate extraction (Schedule C lands). But the two often overlap. Sometimes it’s a question of who gets there first. In the cases of the two housing approvals (one on Galway Road and the other on Nichols Court), the aggregate areas are small and there are already other houses in the vicinity, said Mayor Bev Matthews in an email defending council’s decision. “Extracting aggregate in those areas is not likely to be feasible or supported by the municipality.” She added that “when applications are made within the area of influence,” council has to decide what’s in Trent Lakes’ best long-term interest.

TL’s recently formed Mining and Aggregate Advisory committee also has some recommendations regarding who should be notified about a potential quarry application. Current regulations call for anyone within 120 metres of a proposed quarry to be informed. The committee wants that distance extended to somewhere between 500 metres and two kms. Too often Trent Lakes residents have been surprised to learn that a quarry is slated to pop up in their neighbourhood after it has already been approved. The committee also suggested TL provide an information package to prospective property buyers with information about the current aggregate industry in the municipality, and its potential for expansion. Some councillors, however, felt that distributing information of this nature may adversely affect property values, which real-estate sellers are unlikely to appreciate. Trent Lakes is part of the celebrated Land Between; a unique geological area that boasts beauty and diversity. Who wouldn’t want to live here? However, its geology also includes large limestone deposits that are much in demand, especially since the Oak Ridges Moraine has been protected. The province is continuing its review of the Aggregate Resources Act, which may take another year or two. The future of Trent Lakes and the whole area will depend on the outcome.

Fire with care

Several recent rainy days have led fire chiefs at both the City of Kawartha Lakes and the Municipality of Trent Lakes to call off their fire bans. In both municipalities, however, the Fire Hazard Index is still listed as extreme, and folks should use extra caution to ensure fire safety. The careless disposal of smoking materials is a major cause of accidental fires. Grass fires have the potential to cause extensive damage and injury, and also use emergency resources that could be required for other urgent situations. Here are a few tips from the CKL fire service: • Be very careful when discarding cigarette butts and matches outdoors; • Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children and youth—or even locked away; • Teach children and youth about fire danger; • Always think about your surroundings when out in open fields and wooded areas.

CKL tests new wastewater treatment process

A pilot project will be testing innovative wastewater-quality-improvement technology at Lindsay’s Water Pollution Control Plant until June 2017. Developed by H2Flow Equipment Inc., the project will conduct a feasibility study of a new type of bioreactor technology for treating wastewater. City staff in the Water and Wastewater Division

of Public Works will supervise the project and the Ontario Clean Water Agency will provide additional support. Technical staff from the Centre for Alternative Wastewater Treatment at Fleming College, and labs at York University, will also conduct water sampling and testing. Ontario’s Rural Economic Development Fund is providing financial support. CKL Director of Public Works Bryan Robinson calls the pioneering project “a win-win-win situation for the municipality, industry and the environment,” as it should produce a more environmentally friendly way to process wastewater that has the potential to be applied globally. “There is still demand for a robust mobile system with the right balance between effluent quality, transportability, low maintenance, high oxygentransfer-rate efficiency, and modular capability for higher flow rate,” says Azad Kavoosi, Engineering Team Lead for H2Flow. The aim of the project, he explains, is “to develop a package system that embraces all those aspects with a small footprint and low energy consumption.”

Inspectors will check sewage systems located immediately adjacent to the vulnerable zone of the surface-waterintake area and within the identified vulnerable area of municipal wellheads. They will identify systems that don’t meet the Ontario Building Codes healthand-safety and environmental-integrity objectives, and educate homeowners so they don’t cause public-health or environmental risks. CATCH THE ACE: A popular East Coast progressive-style raffle game called Chase the Ace, which has already raised millions for charities in Atlantic Canada, looks set to invade Ontario. The provincial Alcohol and Gaming Commission has renamed it, Catch the Ace, and the municipality will be able to issue licences for it as of Sept. 1. At their recent annual meeting, members voted unanimously to change the organization’s name to North Pigeon Lake Association (NPLA)— reflecting the new reality that many new members are not actually ratepayers on Pigeon Lake. Oh what a night with the Hip

For me—and for many—Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016 will go down as one of the most exciting days and nights that Bobcaygeon has ever seen. Walking through the crowd on Bolton Street in the early evening, we could feel the rush of palpable energy that had been building throughout the day. It began at the fair grounds with the Farmers Market and Antique Show. It moved to the busy sellers on the main drag dealing t-shirts like hot cakes, and yogis at the locks building the karma of giving. An afternoon of beer tasting at Settlers Village set the mood for the celebration/wake of the Tragically Hip’s gift to Canada. The huge crowd was diverse but united and

initially calm. The crew, headed by Aaron Shaw, worked to fight the wind that insisted on playing havoc with the three jumbo screens. People cheered as Aaron manoeuvred his “cherry picker” in place to keep the big screen stable. Infants and adults alike marvelled at the “air robot” (drone) that zoomed up and down the street recording this amazing event. Then it was time and there they were . . . our band . . . The Tragically Hip. We danced, sang, laughed and cried all at the same time. Who would believe it? When the classic song “Bobcaygeon” was played everyone swayed together. Gord Downey reminded us of our own immortality, courage and our duty. His message was

clear . . . look after the most neglected people, the people of the North. He challenged the Prime Minister and us to this mission. We all clapped and screamed. Then the encores came. live in Driffield, Yorkshire, but they were in Bobcaygeon recently, visiting friends, and Bill bought his Mountain Trike with him on its first overseas adventure. “Everywhere I go,” he says, “people ask me about it.” He enjoys telling them all the details, hoping he can enlighten someone else who could benefit from what this elegant machine has to offer. A former paratrooper with the British Armed Forces now in his mid 50s, Bill was diagnosed 21 years ago with the debilitating disease multiplesclerosis (MS). It’s a neurological condition that leads to gradually decreasing muscle control and leaves the sufferer with less and less mobility. Unable to enjoy the nature hikes that once gave Fiona and him such joy, Bill says he was slipping into a deeper and deeper depression. And that affects the partner too, adds Fiona with conviction. “MS affects the whole family.” Then they saw the Mountain Trike—a kind of all-terrain wheelchair made largely from mountain bike parts—on a television program, and right away, says Bill, “I knew I had to have one.” That was easier said than done, but with help especially from Fiona’s father and brother, it became a reality last fall. Bill and his wife, Fiona, are now true-blue evangelists for this invention that has returned to him a mobility and a way to get out in nature that he once feared he’d lost for good. Kinmount promises a forward fair

It bills itself as “the fair with the forward look”—and with wrassling, truck and tractor pulls, demolition derbies, “the World’s Finest Midway,” and lots of high quality music, fun is pretty well guaranteed at the Kinmount Fair, Sept. 2-4. The country band, Cold Creek County from the Belleville-Peterborough area, headlines the grandstand show on Saturday at 2 pm. When that’s done, be sure to head over to the Pioneer Society’s Heritage Display Tea Garden to hear the old-time violin scrapings of Fiddlin’ Jay Edmunds (accompanied by your editor, John Bird, on banjo-uke; 3 pm and 4 pm, we’re just saying). There’ll be lots of other old-time entertainment at the Tea Garden throughout the weekend, including First Nations drummers and a storyteller. The Friday-night dance in the arena at 9 pm features the James Barker Band. The Saturday evening dance sees the band, Ambush, back by popular demand. At 6 pm on Friday at the grandstand you can

enjoy a vintage tractor pull and a truck pull. And on Sunday at 2:30 pm it’s the Demolition Derby with pro stock, straight stock (but no Woodstock), minismash, and figure 8. Bring your earplugs. All weekend long you can enjoy: the midway; Canadian Raptor Conservancy Birds of Prey; the Ruff Sport dog show; children’s entertainers Team T & J; a talent show; livestock shows and of course, the ever popular, “more.” If rides are your thing—or your children’s thing—then be sure to take advantage of the Midway Special. There are at least six wood-carving clubs within an hour’s drive of Bobcaygeon. And four of them—Caygeon Carvers, Buckhorn Carving Club, Peterborough and District Wood Carvers and Lindsay Senior Carving Club—are combining to host this year’s Kawartha Carving Competition and Show at the Bobcaygeon Curling Club. Wood carvers from all across Ontario will come to the village on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 8 am to 4:30 pm, to show off their work, exchange ideas with one another, and compete in judged events for cash awards, prize ribbons or just satisfaction and bragging rights. Wood sculpturing is a sophisticated art form enjoyed by thousands of men, women and children—mostly as a satisfying hobby, but also on professional and competitive levels. Carvers use specialized knives, chisels and power tools to shape the wood, which can include local basswood, butternut, cedar, pine, and cherry. Some will paint their creations, while others may prefer a natural finish. Regardless, the results are nothing short of amazing. Visitors to the show will have lots of opportunity to get up close to these creations, watch carving demonstrations, purchase a wood sculpture or stock up on carving supplies. Admission is $3, which includes one doorprize ticket (you can buy more). Children under 12 are free with an adult. Two very different events will close the Gamiing Nature Centre’s summer season. First come the sounds of classic rock by the Down and Dirty Band in the last concert of the Sounds Under the Stars series in Gamiing’s “Hayloft” converted barn. Look after ‘the land between’ field and stream

The Land Between is offering waterfront property owners in Trent Lakes (and beyond if you want to drive further) a workshop on how to “naturalize and care for your shoreline property.” The workshop will be held at the Cavendish Community Centre on Saturday, Sept. 10, beginning at 1 pm, and will address topics like: native plant selection and design, nuisance goose control, erosion control, fish habitat, and tools and services (including Kawartha Conservation’s Blue Canoe program and The Land Between’s Greenway Project). The Land Between—where the Great Lakes lowlands meet the Canadian Shield—includes the Kawarthas, one of the last natural landscapes in southern Ontario and a headwater area that provides fresh, clean water to downstream communities. The Land Between is also a non-governmental, grassroots charity dedicated to conserving this important bioregion (thelandbetween.ca).

The Bobcaygeon Agricultural Society (BAS) has upped the ante in two ways this year on its already popular Ambassador Competition. One, they’ll be offering cash awards—not just to the winners, but to every participant. And two, this year there’ll also be a Junior Ambassador Competition, open to “single ladies and gentlemen between 12 and 15 years of age.”

There’ll be a cash prize of $75 for every participant in this contest. You win just by qualifying and entering. Prizes for the Ambassador Competition—“open to single ladies and gentlemen” between the ages of 17 and 24, are $500 for first place; $250 for second; and $100 for third. As with the junior competition, there’ll also be a cash prize for each additional participant—$50. Both public competitions will be held on Friday, Sept. 30, at the stage of the Byron Martin Emporium (Bobcaygeon Community Centre). Each contestant, in either competition, must have been a resident of Canada for two years and a resident of his or her Fair District for six months. They should show up in “appropriate attire,” and should be ready to have an interview, deliver a short, prepared speech and participate in a question-andanswer period on stage. The winning Junior Ambassador is expected to attend various events on the Saturday of the fair (i.e., parade, ribbon and trophy presentation). The

After Labour Day the Ontario Early Years Centre (OEYC) will move its Bobcaygeon operation to Henderson House at Kawartha Settlers’ Village. For a quarter century the OEYC has been coming to the Village of Bobcaygeon to offer a play and learn program for children and families— operating out of various church locations, including Christ Anglican, Trinity United and Village Baptist. Initially the program offered toys, equipment and program resources to the community-run “Bobcaygeon Playgroup.” About 15 years ago it became a “play and learn outreach” location, with the OEYC staff bringing a van full of early-learning toys, equipment, resources and engaging activities for children 0-6, and their families or caregivers. Health & Wellness Olive oil—a good fat if it’s not counterfeit

By now, you’ve probably heard somewhere that the Mediterranean Diet is healthy. Due to its high content of olive oil, the diet has been well documented for reducing cardiovascular disease and increasing overall longevity. We’ve long known the health benefits from olive oil’s high content of mono-unsaturated fatty acids, or oleic acid. More recent discoveries, however, show it is also very high in polyphenols. We believed that oleic acid increased highdensity lipoprotein (HDL) or “good” cholesterol and decreased low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol. But when scientists tested oleic acid separate from the olive oil, the same results were not observed. This led to deeper research and the discovery of over 30 different polyphenols, or phenolics, in extra virgin olive oil, including lignans and secoiridoids like oleuropein and oleocanthal. Polyphenols are naturally occurring compounds that inhibit oxidation and extend shelf-life. The presence of these disease-fighting polyphenols in olive oil explains why other rich mono-unsaturated oils don’t come close to matching olive oil’s health benefits.

Research showed that taking two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil daily for four months significantly improved cardiovascular health— improved ratio of good to bad cholesterol; decreased atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries); decreased blood pressure; and increased blood circulation. But here’s the kicker. Fifty percent of the olive oil in Italy has been adulterated, using cheaper oils, often health degenerating, to increase profits. It gets even worse, as much a 75-80 percent of extra virgin olive oil in the United States has been significantly adulterated as well. Some so-called olive oils actually have no olive oil in them at all—just chlorophyll and beta-carotene to convey the same appearance and fragrance.

Truax family takes United Way lead

Barb Truax, Sherry Giltenan, and Tim Truax will share the duties as co-chairs of this year’s United Way, as the Truax family teams up to lead the special 50th anniversary 2016 campaign. “For the past 50 years, the citizens of this community have contributed financially and in many other ways,” said the mother, daughter and son team in a joint statement about their commitment and decision to take on this role. “This has enabled the United Way to weave a support network by funding priority programs. Aftershock’s shocking story

The shocking truth for Bobcaygeon author Connie Neil is that forced shock treatment, or electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), left her with brain damage. She was only able to recover her mental balance through a healing journey that included what she describes as “native teachings, shamanism,

Buddhism and meditative magical healings.” Now Neil has written a book detailing her experiences—including her ongoing activist battle to ban ECT, which she claims psychiatry now even uses as a form of “elder restraint.” In her new book, AFTERSHOCK: Raised Consciousness Crumbles SHAM Psychiatric System, Neil argues that psychiatry’s main reference text, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), “falsely characterizes natural life events as illness.” “Every fifth Canadian faces brain damage from ECT,” she explains, due to “the growing psychiatric trend to present ECT as the best, first, gentle solution to depression”—and not just to Connie Neil, but to every family she spoke with. The trend alarms her. “Who believes a ‘crazy person’ when they say that this is abuse?” she asks. From an ECT survivor, Neil grew into an antipsychiatry activist. She describes her book as “a survivor report” in which she shares “what works to restore balance with compassion.
