flight out of Tehran, ending the lives of more than 150 people in the blink of an eye. It has been reported it was done in error, but the accusations of intention fly around and, again, social media has become the gospel of truth.

We may never know. I just hope that cooler heads will prevail and we are not headed into yet more conflict in that region of the world.

On January 12, Ontarians were greeted at 7am with an emergency alert about a “possible situation” at the Pickering Nuclear Plant. Those living within shouting distance of the plant were sent into a panic, wondering what catastrophe awaited. Two hours later, another message hit the mobile devices, indicating the initial message had been sent in error while a simulation exercise was taking place at the plant. Of course, there will now be a provincial investigation, but at the end of it all, it was a human’s error.

As technology evolves and we become more reliant on it for everything in our lives, we must be ready to accept the consequences of our errors. After all, we are only human.

Who remembers 20 years ago waiting at midnight on December 31 for the world to go dark?

We actually had a party on our street in Scarborough to band together just in case. It didn’t happen then, but with our reliance on technology today, it’s an even scarier proposition. At the end of every device is a human, whether it be an automated message system or the button that could start a war. At the beginning of 2020, we saw both.

Our neighbours to the south conducted an air strike in Iran that wiped out one of that country’s leaders, a man who, by all accounts, was a terrorist. That action has led to an escalation in tensions throughout the area. To add to those tensions, through social media, the President of the United States continues to “poke the bear”, making threats of more military action should Iran retaliate. At the end of the button, so to speak was a human in Iran who sent a missile at a passenger

The Municipality of Trent Lakes Hamper Committee would like to thank everyone for all their help with the 2019 Christmas Hamper. We were able to brighten Christmas for 30 families.

It was heartwarming to see all the donations of money, toys and food given for this very special event.

We would like to thank all the papers for placing this announcement in their paper and also thank the community businesses, real estate offices, community supporters at large and everyone else who donated their time for going out of their way to add their touch to this day YOU made it very special.

We would also like to give a special thank you to Buckhorn Foodland for that extra mile and for getting the school to decorate the paper bags which were filled with food. These bags made a big hit with the people who picked up the hampers. Foodland again really showed us how much this community means to them.

At the January 14 Committee of the Whole meeting for the City of Kawartha Lakes, the bulk of the two-and-a-half-hour meeting focused on the Kawartha Lakes Strategic Plan for 2020-2023.

The Strategic Plan is designed to give the City a road map to where it wants to be four years from now, how it plans to get there and the core philosophies that will shape City decision-making moving forward.

The plan under debate for 2020-2023 proposed a very ambitious vision for CKL that revolved around “thriving and growing communities within a healthy and natural environment.”

The mission proposed was “to deliver the highest standard of municipal services while creating a healthy and sustainable future for all Kawartha Lakes residents and businesses.”

The four guiding principles were proposed to be “fiscal responsibility, openness and transparency, partnering and collaboration and service excellence.”

Key values CKL is hoping to aspire to include “accountability, respect and teamwork.”

The strategic priorities will be “a vibrant and growing economy, an exceptional quality of life, a healthy environment and good government.”

The City sees itself over the next four years as a “provider, a partner, a facilitator or an advocate” to ensure that the needs of local citizens are met in a timely and fiscally responsible manner.

After the overview of the plan was presented, Councillors were given the opportunity to discuss the plan. A lively and complex argument ensued. Council concerns were rooted in a belief that the plan gave cultural and heritage groups short shrift and that the environment, while being paid lip service, needed to be featured far more prominently in the Strategic Plan.

Councillor Ashmore presented concerns from the cultural and heritage community that were twofold. First, the cultural and heritage community were

concerned that there was not stronger language contained within the Strategic Plan about their place in City decision-making over the next four years. Second, cultural and heritage groups were concerned that the push to get the Strategic Plan ready curtailed the amount of public consultation. Councillor Ashmore wondered if, over the next two weeks, the cultural and heritage community could have additional input into the Strategic Plan before the City potentially approves the document at a Council meeting on January 28.

Mayor Letham responded that the groups could be invited back to participate in the committees that the Plan will spawn once approved. Letham said that the groups would be key in “creating the meat of the strategic plan.”

Councillor Richardson then proposed an amendment to the Strategic Plan that would make it a priority for the City to “be fiscally and environmentally responsible” rather than just “fiscally responsible”.

That suggestion, however innocent, was greeted with significant pushback by other Councillors and senior staff.

CAO Taylor cautioned about inserting that kind of language into the document without further clarification of what it exactly meant. Councillor Dunn feared that the inclusion of “environmentally responsible” would shift power from Council to the Environmental Committee who would “now have the power to sign off on all city actions.” Dunn added that he was fearful that in the search for more sustainable solutions that “a better way would be a more expensive way.” Councillor Ashmore suggested that by adding the “environmentally responsible” phraseology to the Strategic Plan that the City “was going to let the United Nations or Hollywood celebrities” make final decisions about CKL policy.

Richardson, with the support of Councillor Seymour-Fagan, stood fast on her resolution. SeymourFagan supported Richardson’s call for the inclusion of “environmentally responsible” stating that “this is where the future is and if we do nothing, nothing happens.”

Mayor Letham seemed leery to support Richardson’s addition to the Strategic Plan, “as it was redundant to put the City’s concern for the environment in two places in the Plan.” Letham called the 2020-2023 Strategic Plan the “greenest document” the City has ever produced and felt the change was unnecessary.

In a 5-4 Council vote, the Richardson amendment was voted down.

Councillor Elmslie then suggested compromise wording regarding the environment to be inserted in another place in the document believing “that in this day and age environmental concerns should be a lens that helps us make decisions.”

Councillor Ashmore opposed Elmslie’s suggestion saying that “the Strategic Plan was a contract with the voters and it needs to be kept simple.” CAO Taylor said that “the Strategic Plan did not need any more wording” and that statement was strongly supported by the Mayor who said he “was not supporting any changes to the Strategic Plan.” Councillor Dunn opposed

The compromise wording was also voted down 5-4, and the Strategic Plan was approved for its final presentation to Council on January 28.

On January 14, Councillor Doug Elmslie shared with Council what he learned in 2019 when as Deputy-Mayor he hosted seven different Roads Roundtables across CKL.

Elmslie began his presentation by recognizing the work of senior City staff who made these meetings possible. He thanked the public for finding the time to participate in these meetings and believes that the Roads Roundtables have set the bar high for future attempts at community engagement.

Elmslie estimated that at the seven venues he met with more than 500 local residents, and he said the give and take that occurred at the meetings was educational for all involved. Elmslie shared it was very clear to him that after travelling around the entire City that the road problems faced by residents were the same in every ward. He hoped that voters would appreciate that through these Roundtables that Council was trying to listen and provide solutions.

Elmslie believes that with some tweaking that these public forums should continue dealing with other issues that impact everyone in CKL.

Councillor Ashmore thanked the former DeputyMayor for coming to Omemee to hear local concerns, and believes that the Roundtables were time well spent.

Elmslie’s written report to Council focused on two key areas of interest: what recommendations did the citizens of CKL have for Council regarding roads and, if more road services were requested, how the Roundtable participants hope to pay for the additional road work.

Roads recommendations: • Drainage improvement via more effective ditching and brushing and the expansion of the number of roads that have paved shoulders to shed water more easily.

• More communication, education and engagement from the City regarding roads issues.

• More preventative maintenance before the road in question crumbles and needs extensive repairs.

How to pay for these additional services: • Impose an annual road levy.

• Take out additional debentures.

• Reduce spending on other programs and reassign funding to road related endeavours.

• Encourage development to increase the tax base

and subsequent funding for capital and operational initiatives.

Actions already taken by CKL: • Six additional hot mix asphalt boxes were purchased, tripling the former inventory, resulting in one hot mix box for each Public Works Depot.

These additions will assist in long-term pothole remediation.

• Increased funding of $1.2 million for roads and bridge maintenance in the 2020 Operating Budget.

There were other themes repeated by Roundtable participants.

• Hire more staff to ensure a more consistent standard of work and provide essential backup during staff absences.

• More gravel roads need to be paved.

• Enforce heavy vehicle restrictions with the help of the OPP to ensure that heavy trucks are using haul roads only, not secondary roads.

For 2020, the new Deputy Mayor will be Pat O’Reilly. It is expected that he will host a similar set of Roundtable discussions this spring, summer and fall on issue(s) yet to be designated.

Trent Lakes Council has announced that Donna Teggart will be permanently filling the role of CAO/ Treasurer.

Donna joined as Deputy Treasurer in 2005 with a strong finance background. In 2009, Donna assumed the role of Treasurer and has proven to be a valuable asset to the Municipality.

SOUPFEST IS BACK!

Formerly Lindsay Soupfest, this annual event is now Kawartha Lakes Soupfest. Being held February 22 from 11am until 2pm at the Lindsay Armouries, Soupfest is expanding to include more participants from all over Kawartha Lakes. Organizers hope to have as many as 20 area restaurants and caterers offering up their best soups for guests to enjoy. As always, guests and celebrity judges will vote for their favourites and awards will be presented to the winning businesses.

Brand new for this year is the addition of Kawartha Kids Got Talent as the entertainment. In an effort to showcase local youth performers, event organizers are working with the Boys and Girls Club to find the best local youth musical talent that will entertain on stage

Happy New Year from the Kinette Club of Bobcaygeon.

The Bobcaygeon Kinette Club is getting ready to celebrate Kin Canada’s National Day of Kindness at the ValuMart in Bobcaygeon on Saturday, February 22 from 11am to 2pm, assisting in the bagging of groceries.

This year, Kin Canada is celebrating its 100th anniversary and the Bobcaygeon Kinette Club will be celebrating 61 years in April. Look for events coming up to celebrate these milestones.

I received a letter from a woman who was asking about getting her credit card debt under control.

One of her solutions was to declare bankruptcy, but she was worried this would make it worse.

Don’t beat yourself up about this debt, it can be fixed. Declaring bankruptcy should be viewed as a last resort and I would exhaust all other solutions before contemplating this option. Yes, the bankruptcy will ruin your credit, however it is recoverable. Once the bankruptcy has been settled and cleared, it is important to re-establish good credit right away. This could take up to three years to do so but remember, to reach for your dreams you must do the incremental steps over time to get there. Money is not just for toys and possessions, it provides the means for you to reach your goals and ensures your comfort, dignity, security and independence as you age. Be honest with yourself and be committed to change. Let go of any past indiscretions or setbacks and start new this year. It is a new decade, and a new start to clear your mind towards financial freedom.

If you are entering the year with considerable debt, there are a few other ways to fix this. The easiest method is to consolidate high interest loans into a new mortgage to capture a lower rate and increase monthly cash flow. This consolidation should be viewed as a one-time transaction to put you on the right road to a debt-free lifestyle and should never be used as a continuous solution to get you out of future debts.

If this is not an option, make a list of all your debts and begin to tackle one liability at a time. Pick the one you are going to concentrate on and put as much as you can down on this debt every month, while only paying the minimum payments on the other loans. Once this debt is paid, then move to the next one, repeating the process of paying down one and maintaining the others with only minimum payments. Once all the credit is paid, you can use these newfound funds to start a savings program toward investing. This is when you will stop feeling helpless.

Be sure to avoid the tendency to sugar-coat your finances or make excuses to flee from finally resolving your debt this year. It is necessary for you to take action and get out of the victim mentality, finally creating certainty and options for your future.

If this means finding ways to make more income, getting a new job, or cutting back on spending – then do it!

It is in the reach of every person to become financially comfortable. Let go of your old habits and create new ones!

In a nutshell, that describes the ongoing challenges many families in the City of Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton County, and Northumberland County face to pay for healthy food.

In its annual pricing for a Nutritious Food Basket in this area, the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit estimates an average family of four (two adults, a teen and child) would have to spend nearly $875 per month to eat healthy in 2019. The Nutritious Food Basket consists of more than 60 food items that are nutritious and commonly purchased by people. Items not included in the ‘basket’ are essentials like soap, toilet paper, toothpaste and personal care products.

While food banks, emergency meal programs, and other programs do an excellent job to provide some relief in the short term to address the problem, they are not long-term solutions, Malik notes. “We forget that food banks were only supposed to be temporary solutions,” she says. “What we really need is to find a long-term solution to food insecurity and poverty.”

The problem of food insecurity can only be addressed when people earn enough money, says Malik. “We need income solutions, such as creating jobs that provide living wages and benefits, increasing social assistance rates that reflect the true costs of living, and setting up a basic income guarantee in Canada,” she adds.

SNOWSHOE KAWARTHA COMING IN FEBRUARY

Snowshoe Kawartha is one of the most popular snowshoe events in Ontario with more than 150 snowshoers every year. According to Snowshoe Canada, it is also one of the most enthusiastic snowshoe communities, bringing hundreds of families, friends and competitors to the City of Kawartha Lakes from across Ontario for a day of healthy, competitive outdoor winter activity in Fenelon Falls.

The event has developed into a significant “community” initiative. The volunteer team builds its success with courses set for the enjoyment of a wide range of ages and abilities. Snowshoe Kawartha has a history of embracing diversity within a competitive framework.

In 2018, more than 125 students raced 500 metres on Cameron Lake setting a new world record.

groundwork to become a larger Regional Competition.

Snowshoe Kawartha will host the 500 metre World Record by Elementary School students, the Athletics Ontario Provincial Championship and the Snowshoe Canada Ontario Championship. The City of Kawartha Lakes course layouts will be expanded to include 1,600 meters this year with plans to address the needs of both sprint and intermediate distance (100, 200, 400, 800 and 1,600 metre) courses accompanied by snowshoe training and practice course capacities within the City of Kawartha Lakes.

She is a Canadian-born vocalist, songwriter, pianist, Celtic fiddler and dancer. We look forward to greeting you when you attend this wonderful concert.

A very Happy New Year to all our readers. A brand new one and we are thrilled to be back at practice for the next great show. Bob has found some wonderful music for us to learn -- some quite challenging and many very familiar.
