BEACH PARK QUESTIONS

After attending the public meeting and reviewing the information on the City’s website, I am still left with a couple of major concerns. Although the proposed plan has many attractive features, this whole redevelopment will, in some ways, make Beach Park less enjoyable, and less usable, than it has been for many city residents.

My primary concern is for the beach itself.

Currently, the beach is a popular place to take children and grandchildren to enjoy the sand and water. When sitting at the beach, one has a relaxing, enjoyable view across the river, with the two islands in view.

The proposed design will significantly reduce that view, and replace the line of sight with a major dock complex and boats. This is a major drawback to beach users.

Parking in the area of the beach and access from Park Street seems to be much reduced. Much of the car parking is now about as far from the beach as it can get. That’s a major pain, and potential safety hazard for those hauling their kids, towels, toys and beach paraphernalia to the sand, passing with their children through the boat ramp and trailer parking area.

Lastly, the food concession is gone. The existing concession is used by many beachgoers, and it’s my observation that the concession acts as a draw for some people to the beach area. It will be missed by many!

Beach Park has traditionally had water quality issues. It is not clear to me how the additional dock would improve the water circulation near the beach.

Does that dock really need to extend as far east as shown?

Bobcaygeon has a wonderful fireworks display each July 1. Many many people enjoy sitting at the beach and along the boardwalk to the east, enjoying the reflections of the fireworks in the water. That wonderful view will now be partially blocked by boats and docks.

My second major concern is parking for boat trailers. The proposed design features a much improved boat launching ramp, a feature that I heartily endorse as a valuable asset in attracting visitors to our area.

However, the boat trailer parking area, as proposed, will only have space for 5 vehicles, less than can be accommodated by the current lot. How will this affect the major fishing derbies that are hosted from this park?

I suggest that Landscape Planning Limited be asked by the city staff to propose an alternate design, with the boat ramp near its current location, boat trailer parking in the west, and more parking in the east for beach users.

Alice in Wonderland was the theme for an afternoon garden tea hosted for the Bobcaygeon Horticultural Society by Rural Roots Garden.

Helping Kelly Jones, owner of Rural Roots, were friends John Knox of Knox Farms, Ashleigh Leonard of The Farm and Donna Steele of Steelecroft Farms.

Together they put on an afternoon of pure delight.

There were delicious goodies served to their guests and absolutely gorgeous gardens, decorated in the Alice in Wonderland theme. All of Kelly’s special animals including Gretchen, an adorable pot belly pig, her prize chickens and dwarf bunnies were also decked out.

Kudos to Ashleigh, Donna and John for helping Kelly to make this a special afternoon.

In addition to this event, Kelly, Ashleigh and Donna visited several nursing homes at Easter with everyone’s pet in tow and dressed for an Easter Parade.

I don’t think the residents could quite believe they were actually seeing a pig dressed in a pink ballet tutu and matching nails. It was lots of fun and chuckles.

Full marks to all three of you for helping to make someone’s afternoon special.

If you want a feast for the eyes, stop into Rural Roots and walk through Kelly’s gardens and say “hi” to her beautiful pets. July is the month for daylilies and at Rural Roots they show to perfection. Kelly holds a daylily fundraiser each year and this year’s recipient will be the Women’s Resource Centre in Lindsay.

CHORISTERS’ CORNER

While the Choristers are taking a summer break, there is still news of a different kind. Even though our fearless leader, Bob Plummer, is busy with the Music Council, he is also scouring the library and other sources for music that the Choristers will learn for the Christmas concert. Seems strange to be talking Christmas in this humidity, but there it is!

The choir seems to be a family affair for some folks. Bob and his wife Laura keep us all going, and we all look forward to Laura’s stories every practice.

Ron and Pat Cook have been with us for a number of years, and Ron has recently taken the chore of accountant for the group. Hence he will keep us together financially! He keeps the basses in tune as well!

Robbie and Bill Gordon joined us a few years ago and are a great asset to the choir. Both of them have sung for many years in other choirs and Bill keeps the tenors in line! We also have the mother and daughter team of Debbi Risebrough and Thelma McConnell.

Thelma, I believe, is an original member and Debbi joined her after a while. We are also grateful that Debbi is sometimes called upon to play her flute for some numbers and is a great asset.

That’s all for now. Hope you are finding places to cool off during this heatwave...just be glad it’s not snowing as in other parts of the country. Talk to you next time and ‘like’ us on Facebook...maybe even think about joining us in September.

SUPPORT FOR CELL SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS

Members of Parliament representing the region, and from across party lines, have signed strong letters of support to the federal government to help fund proposed cell service improvements for the region.

The Eastern Ontario Regional Network (EORN) is proposing a $213 million public-private partnership to improve both the reach and quality of cellular data services in rural Eastern Ontario, which is essential for business investment, jobs and quality of life.

About one-quarter of the area where there are homes, businesses or major roads in the region cannot access any cellular services.

The project is seeking one-third of the funding from the federal government, one-third from the provincial government and one-third from mobile carriers. Municipal governments across the region, including the City of Kawartha Lakes, have already approved and/or contributed funds for technical work needed for the project.

The incoming Ontario Government committed to the province’s share of $71 million during the election campaign.

In two separate letters, all Members of Parliament from the region are urging the federal government to provide its $71 million share for the project. Jamie Schmale, MP for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock has signed a letter of support.

RUSSIAN COWS ARE NO DIFFERENT

A delegation of as many as 50 Russian dairy farmers and processors will visit Ontario and Quebec this month. They’re on the Dairy Motor Rally to see for themselves what makes the Canadian dairy industry so successful.

They’ll be in our area July 17 and 18, not only visiting businesses and farms, but taking in our local culture as well.

• July 17 – Visit Crovalley Holsteins, Hastings, Grasshill Farm and Kawartha Dairy in Bobcaygeon before spending the evening exploring Lindsay.

• July 18 - Visit Green Tractors in Omemee, Kawartha Holsteins and Mariposa Dairy in Lindsay before attending the Durham - “Twilight Meeting” at Benrise Farms in Bowmanville and meeting Canadian dairy farm families.

City of Kawartha Lakes Mayor, Andy Letham said, “Kawartha Lakes is proud to host the dairy businesses visiting from Russia. We look forward to opportunities for the development of export sales of dairy genetics, equipment, and technology, as well as sharing dairy management expertise, and our sense of community and family business culture.”

An event staged annually by Russia’s premiere online dairy publication, The DairyNews, Motor Rally educates dairy farmers and processors on industry innovation. With this visit it goes international for the first time as they explore the nuances of the Canadian dairy industry.

United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes is excited to announce a special new summer Community Hub to take place at King Albert Public School through July 23 to August 14.

Thirteen agencies from across the City of Kawartha Lakes will come together for three weeks of programming to provide ease of access to several employment readiness workshops as well as a Cooking with Tweens program. Programming will work in tandem with Trillium Lakelands District School Board’s Summer Learning Program and EarlyON’s Ready for Kindergarten program.

Monday, August 13 will wrap up adult programming with a Community Fair celebration.

Additional community partners who did not deliver a workshop, but are interested in supporting community members, will attend and provide resources for many of the workshop participants.

On a Healing Journey

The group Fenelon Falls for First People’s is on a journey of healing. Their reconciliation action takes the form of giving, but the heart of their journey began many years ago and is reflected in the feather symbol depicted on their written materials. It’s that story I’d like to tell now.

Terry Lowe is an EMS paramedic for the City of Kawartha Lakes. Back in 2002, Terry had a relationship developing with a crow that was hanging around the EMS base where he was working. Late in June 2002, that bird dropped a feather which Terry picked up and took home. On that same day in Nanaimo, B.C., Terry’s great-niece Lisa Marie Young went missing.

Lisa became one of 1,181 missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada.

Since then, Terry and his wife Jane and their family have been trying to find Lisa and keep her story alive.

According to witnesses, on June 30, 2002, 21-year-old Lisa Marie Young went out with friends in Nanaimo. In the parking lot of a local hot spot, they met a man driving a red Jaguar.

This man allegedly invited the group to a few afterhours parties, so they piled into his car and carried on with their festivities. Around 3am, Lisa was hungry and the Jaguar driver offered to take her to get pizza while the others stayed behind. At about 4:30am, one of her friends received a text message from Lisa, “ Come get me, they won’t let me leave.” That was the last time anyone heard from Lisa.

This outgoing, athletic and vibrant young woman disappeared that night and, according to Terry and Jane, the main suspect (the Jaguar driver) was never arrested, even though the police at one time had him in for questioning.

So when you see the feather logo being used by the Fenelon Falls for First People’s group think of Lisa Marie Young and others who have never come home, and those families still seeking justice and closure.

Garden Heritage is a collection of memories centred on the garden; for example, picking wild blueberries at the cottage for a freshly baked pie; sharing that first tender meal of green beans slathered in butter (no gourmet restaurant could even touch that flavour); or decorating the cemetery with a billowing arrangement of peonies and snowball blooms.

Your Bobcaygeon Horticultural Society is celebrating our shared horticultural traditions in this year’s garden tour. With the cooperation of the Boyd Heritage Museum and Kawartha Settlers’ Village, we have gathered “memories” of the garden.

You might begin the day at the Museum where staff has arranged a special exhibit of 19th century garden photos and artifacts. Within the stone walls of the museum grounds, displays of traditional crafts reflect the ingenuity of times past. Plants and seeds will be on offer from Omemee resident, Aron Muscutt, who sells locally collected seeds, and from Kathy Martin, herbalist, whom many of you know from her booth at the Bobcaygeon Farmers’ Market. Sandi McNeil will demonstrate her basket weaving skills. The Ontario Beekeepers Association, with their hive display, will focus on the production of honey and the hazards threatening our bee population. Enjoy a free Kawartha Dairy ice cream cone (definitely part of Bobcaygeon heritage) while you browse.

Be sure to visit Kawartha Settlers’ Village, our authentic heritage centre. Scattered among more than 20 historic buildings are numerous gardens: the daylily collection, the children’s and community gardens, as well as the Frank Poole and Earl Murray memorial gardens. If you are of a local family, you may find “your family” plant in the pioneer-named collection.

Also at KSV, linger for tea/dessert on the veranda of Henderson House while listening to the music of John Max and His One Man Band.

Six exceptional private gardens, including those of a century farm and several century homes, are open for our visitors. You will be inspired by the loving renewal of these historic properties. One features magnificent baskets and an outstanding hydrangea collection. Another will surprise with its imaginative pond, paths and quirky accessories. Sparkling annuals, including some unusual exotic specimens, flourish in another landscape. You won’t want to miss even one of these interesting properties.

On Saturday, July 14, join us in appreciation of our garden heritage. Bring the kids…children under 16 are admitted free! Encourage them to collect their own garden memories beginning with a lovely day of learning, fun and ice cream cones!

The newly elected Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford was sworn in earlier this month as the 26th leader of the province. His new cabinet has been dubbed “The Government for the People”, and includes long-time MPP for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock, Laurie Scott.

Scott has been named Minister of Labour. She replaces Liberal MP Kevin Flynn. The Ministry of Labour and its agencies are responsible for employment equity and rights, occupational health and safety, and labour relations. She could be in for immediate challenges as Ford implements a review of some jobs and mega-salaries in his new government.

Scott said, “I am honoured to be joining Cabinet as the Minister of Labour. My colleagues and I are looking forward to getting to work for the people of Ontario,” she added.

On July 27 and 28, Bobcaygeon will host the 49th Annual Ontario Open Fiddle and Step Dance Contest at Bobcaygeon Community Centre on 51 Mansfield St., at the fairgrounds.

The competition begins at 6:30pm on Friday night and continues all day Saturday starting at 10:30am. The finals will be held starting at 6:30pm on Saturday. More than $8,000 in prize money is up for grabs as fiddlers and step dancers from around Ontario compete.

Catering for the event is provided by the Bobcaygeon Kinettes Club.

The Ontario Open Fiddle and Step Dance Contest is a non-profit community-run project. This chartered volunteer-run group conducts this event annually to preserve this pioneer cultural art form and to raise money for worthy charities. In the past, the group has supported the Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Association for Children with Learning Disabilities.

responsibility to ensure our waterways are a safe place to work and play is shared by all boaters. Alcohol and drug impairment continue to be a factor in boating deaths and injuries and, similar to the efforts on our roadways, we all have a role to play.

Operation Dry Water focuses on the potential risks of impaired boating and opportunities to discourage it. Being charged with Impaired Operation of a Vessel carries the same consequences as Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle and in Ontario that includes a suspension of your vehicle driving privileges. Upon conviction, a judge may prohibit operating a boat for a period of time and the repercussions of a criminal impairment conviction can go far beyond the initial incident.

In Ontario, no alcohol can be consumed by anyone on board while a boat is underway. Only boats with permanent sleeping, cooking and washroom facilities onboard may permit consumption but only when docked or at anchor. NEVER boat under the influence.

LOCAL SHOPPING BUS TEST “EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS”

More than 70 people from across the City took advantage of a test run route for a weekly shopping bus for Kawartha Lakes – nicknamed ‘White Lightening’ recently. The test route ran on July 4, doing three laps of the Little Britain-Lindsay-Cambray-Cameron-

Fenelon Falls-Rosedale corridor, driving some 1,700 kilometres in more than 12 hours of service.

The rural shopping bus is part of a three-point plan launched by local residents last December in order to increase transportation across this City.

The shopping bus is being provided by a private sector owner who will look at maintaining and even expanding the service once the market research has been completed this fall.

“As volunteers we’re just happy the schedule worked and the bus was on time,” joked Mike Perry, Co-Chair of the Kawartha Rural Transportation Working Group, who helped plan the test run. On a more serious note, he added, “Local residents just proved again the clear need and desire for transit outside Lindsay. People were very happy with the service. Ridership was better than even we were expecting. We all know rural transit helps us all and is good for the local economy.” The second test route is being planned to cover the more eastern parts of the City.

“This is simply excellent and I am so thankful for this,” proclaimed one rider in her comment form.

“It’s the best thing to happen in our community since Timmies,” declared another.

Riders used last week’s test run to shop locally, visit family and even hit the beach with the kids in the hot weather. The tracking results showed that people from many communities and walks of life used the bus on its test run. The shuttle bus used professional drivers, is fully insured, and has

complete accessibility. Complimentary music, water and snacks were even provided on board. The Lindsay, Fenelon Falls and Bobcaygeon Chambers of Commerce support the shopping bus as good for local business.

The only complaint heard during the test run was that the service was not yet permanent. Riders were unanimous that such a bus is key.

The plan is to keep the bus running this fall based on advertising, sponsorship and promotional opportunities. Local businesses are encouraged to get creative with such a hands-on, people-centred and much-needed fun, community concept.

BLUESCAPING PROJECT BEGINS

Work has begun on a $30,000 BlueScaping project to improve the Omemee beach. The joint project with the City of Kawartha Lakes Parks and Recreation Department is supported by two grants from the RBC Foundation and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.

“For the first phase of this multi-phase project, Kawartha Conservation staff were joined by City parks staff to cut down the phragmites patch that has taken over a portion of the east side of the Omemee beach,” said Stewardship Outreach Technician, Emily Johnson. “Using hand tools to remove the highly invasive plants, we removed a total of 20 bags of

biomass that were subsequently disposed of at the landfill. This is the first step in an eradication plan that will take place throughout the summer.”

Kristie Virgoe, Director of Stewardship and Conservation Areas explained the project will not only positively impact the community from an environmental perspective, but a beautification one as well.

“We are excited to be able to work with the City’s Parks and Recreation Department, as well as community members and volunteers to beautify the Omemee beach through this BlueScaping initiative,” Ms. Virgoe said. Being able to address a lot of the invasive species and storm water runoff through this project will benefit the entire community for years to come.”

Working closely with City parks staff, the BlueScaping project will engage residents across the community while developing shoreline benefits, education, awareness and improved water quality.

Kawartha Conservation Stewardship Coordinator Holly Shipclark explained the multi-phase project will address a number of issues at the Omemee beach.

“The project will involve creating a rain garden at the Omemee beach, naturalization on the shoreline, removal of more than 500 square feet of invasive plants, adding more than 250 native plants, and installing interpretive signage,” said Ms. Shipclark.

“Funds will also support three public workshops and a rainwater harvesting demonstration at the Omemee beach.

NATIVE PLANT PROGRAM

Native plants are a beautiful addition to your property while providing habitat for local wildlife and

pollinators and acting as a filter for rainwater runoff. To assist local landowners with improving their properties or shoreline, Kawartha Conservation has launched our Native Plant Distribution Program for 2018.

There will be two order deadlines and pick-up deadlines this year, one in the spring and one in the early fall, to accommodate both planting seasons.

“Native plants are a great addition to yards and shorelines and not only look great, but help support the environment,” explained Stewardship Coordinator Holly Shipclark.

Native plant root systems take hold easily, grow well, and adapt to changing conditions. As they mature, they build a complex web of roots within the soil, offering greater stability and erosion protection.

The final date to order your low-cost native plants for the spring pick-up has passed but you have plenty of time to order your fall plants. The final date to order for the fall pick-up is Monday, September 3, with pick up on Saturday, September 8 from 10am to 2pm.

Pick-up of native plant orders is at the Field Centre at Ken Reid Conservation Area, located at 277 Kenrei Road, Lindsay.

Shoreline property owners may also be eligible to receive a matching contribution of native plants through Kawartha Conservation, up to $200, for shoreline naturalization.

We are all born with the basic instinct to breathe.

Inhaling and exhaling is second nature to us. But many of us aren’t breathing as fully or as deeply as we could.

Our breath is key to our survival, but the ancient yogis also believed that breath is key to vitality and that yogic breathing practices, called pranayama, can have beneficial effects on our quality of life.

Mindful breathing -- paying attention to your breath and learning how to control it -- is one of the most effective ways to lower stress levels and improve a variety of health factors ranging from sleep quality to metabolism.

The many benefits of deep breathing include a reduction in stress and blood pressure, strengthening of abdominal and intestinal muscles and relief of general body aches and pains. Deep breathing also promotes better blood circulation, helps to release toxins from the body and aids in better sleep, resulting in increased energy levels. Focusing on your breathing during physical activities, such as exercise, can help you become more mindful of your body and improve your self-awareness.

How it’s Done Sitting in a comfortable position, with hands resting on knees and shoulders relaxed, begin by exhaling all the breath from your lungs. Breathe in through your nose. Exhale slowly through your nose while you count to five. Tighten or tense your abdominal muscles. At the end of your breath, pause for two counts, then inhale slowly while you count to five. Expand your belly as you breathe in. Close your eyes and continue to slowly inhale and exhale, five to 10 times.

If your mind wanders during this exercise, don’t worry. Refocus on your counting. You will become

more aware of your breathing, and will find that it becomes easier to breathe deeply without overthinking it.

Is Integrating Hospitals a Good Idea?

Late last month, the Central East Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) announced the proposed integration between Ross Memorial Hospital (RMH) and Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC).

This would mean there would be a single hospital network with two sites.

The two hospitals have been working together for years to collaborate in a number of areas including diagnostic imaging, lab medicine, mental health, pediatrics and orthopedics.

PRHC President and CEO, Dr. Peter McLaughlin said, “An integration of this nature would put us among the top tier of large community hospitals in Ontario, giving us a stronger voice in attracting new programming and resources from the LHIN and the province, as well as increasing our attractiveness to prospective employees.”

No final decision has been made, and the groups are continuing their due diligence, government approvals and stakeholder engagement.

DEfining Care at RMH

The RMH Foundation is grateful for the generous recent donations to the Defining Care Spring Appeal to support the new X-ray equipment and renovations in the General Radiography Department.

• Members of the Bobcaygeon Kinette Club presented a $1,500 gift. Since 1996, the Bobcaygeon Kinette Club has donated $33,125 for the purchase of medical equipment and capital projects at the Ross Memorial.

• Following its annual Fall Craft Sale in Cambray, the Victoria West District Women’s Institute voted to direct $300 from the proceeds to support the campaign at RMH. “The local Women’s Institutes have been defining care at Ross Memorial since its doors first opened more than 115 years ago,” said Erin Coons, RMH Foundation Executive Director.

• Members of the Kawartha ATV Association (KATVA) presented a cheque for $10,000. “We’re honoured to be selected by the members of the KATVA to receive this generous gift, and we’re touched by their support

of local patients,” said Coons.

Business just picked up at the medical centre on Francis Street in Fenelon Falls. The City of Kawartha Lakes Family Health Team, working with building’s owner, has now installed power openers on the centre’s eight main doors.

Patients had been struggling with the heavy metal doors, especially in the winter. “It’s a necessity,” notes Mike Perry, Executive Director of the City of Kawartha Lakes Family Health Team.

“People come to a medical clinic when they are not feeling well,” Perry said. “Many are frail, so in addition to increasing accessibility these door openers help prevent injuries and falls which in turn help patients and the healthcare system.”

HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT PLAN

The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that 1.1 billion young people are at risk of developing hearing loss due to the use of personal audio devices such as smartphones and damaging levels of sound at music venues, where noise levels can exceed 120 decibels for hours. Perhaps the biggest culprit of hearing loss among millennials is caused by listening to music devices and smartphones through earbuds, which place the sound closer to the ear drum and enhance volume by as much as nine decibels. At full volume, digital music devices can produce as much noise as a live rock concert. At very high volumes, hearing loss can occur after as little as eight minutes of listening.

The most important step you can take to protect your hearing is to be smart… Don’t subject your hearing to sounds too loud to tolerate. You can also carry ear protection to wear in loud, noisy environments. Having your hearing checked is another way to stay on top of possible hearing loss. The City of Kawartha Lakes is developing a comprehensive strategy to address climate change mitigation and adaptation at a local level. This strategy is called the Kawartha Lakes Healthy Environment Plan (KLHEP).

Ambassadors for the plan will be attending various events and festivals over the course of the next three months. They’ll be conducting conversations intended to collect feedback from the public on their experiences with climate change and their suggestions on the goals and actions for the KLHEP. Feedback and suggestions can also be provided through an online survey.

PET SAFETY IN WARM WEATHER

We humans know how to keep ourselves cool during the hot weather. But it’s important to be even more diligent when it comes to our pets.

Warm weather can be dangerous for our fourlegged friends. It’s hard for them to cool down when the sun is out because animals don’t sweat like people do. Dogs cool themselves through panting, of course, but did you know that they sweat through their paws, too? And when the air is so hot and humid, it can be difficult for your dog to breathe and pant, making it harder for them to stay cool.

According to the experts on pethealthnetwork. com, cats tend to tolerate the heat a little better than dogs and some even prefer lying in the direct sunlight.

Still, though, you shouldn’t forget about taking care of the feline.

Here are some a couple of summer safety tips for dogs and cats: 1. Do not ever leave your pet in a hot car. It only takes a few minutes for a pet to develop heat stroke and suffocate in a car. Many people don’t realize how hot it gets in parked cars. The OPP have said that on a day when the temperature is 26 degrees

Celsius, inside a vehicle in the hot sun it can reach 71 degrees Celsius. Your best bet is to leave your pet home on those warm days.

2. Imagine walking on your hands on the hot asphalt, cement or even sand. That’s what it’s like for our pets and their paws. Not only can their paws burn easily, but it can also increase their body temperature and lead to overheating.

3. When we’re out in the hot sun, we know we should stay hydrated. It’s the same for Fido or Fluffy. If you and your pet are out in the sun for an extended period of time, make sure you have plenty of water and whenever possible, find a shady spot to have your drink.

HELPING OTHER STAY COOL Shaukat Mohamed from Pick ‘n’ Save in Bobcaygeon grabbed a shopping cart and filled it with bottled water on Canada Day, then headed down Bolton Street handing it out to help folks stay cool. This doesn’t happen in the big cities, folks!
