It’s time to get on my soapbox, so sit back and relax for this. How many times have you called a company looking to use their service or buy their product and (a) had to leave a message because their “new system” is automated; (b) been put on hold for a long time while they “serve other customers”; or (c) left a message and never heard a word from the company? If you’ve raised your hand to any of those, you can understand my frustration. In today’s competitive world, customer service is THE most important aspect of any business. I don’t care if the receptionist (is that a politically correct word anymore?) calls me back to tell me that the person I really want to speak with is on holidays and will call me back. That would be customer service to at least some extent.
While we’re on the subject of customer service, let’s talk about sales people in stores. How many times have you walked into a store or kiosk and been ignored by the sales people? They walk right by you or are too “busy” to at least let you know they’ve seen you. I don’t expect a salesperson who’s with another customer to leave them and jump to my side, but at least let me know you’ve seen me. Then there are those who just walk right by, pretending to be on a mission somewhere else. I spent about 30 minutes in a small store one day looking for a specific item and not one of the four salespeople asked if they could help me find what I wanted! We need to know we matter. We want to spend our very hard-earned dollars in your store or hire your service. Please call me back ... send me an email ... or give me a sign that you care about my business. Because I can find it elsewhere... and probably will.

More than 75 community members were present at the Gamiing Nature Centre on July 1 to meet and greet the Al Awad family, who have been living in Bobcaygeon since January 2016. Parents Yousef and Mariam along with their children Yamama, Hadeel, Yaman and baby Mohamed helped cut a cake and met with their supporters, many of whom continue to work with them on a regular basis. Mieke Schipper, Executive Director at Gamiing and Chair of BARC, thanked the many volunteers on hand and announced the happy news that a second Syrian family, the Dawarahs, would be joining the Al Awads as neighbours later this month. I would like to thank the staff at The Promoter for printing my small blog in the Friday 14th July issue 13. As I mentioned, my wife and I attended the Canada Day celebrations in Bobcaygeon. With us was my mother-in-law Joyce Grassam, who at 88 years was enjoying the celebrations with us. Despite her frail health, she also managed to attend the firework display in the evening, which we talked about on the drive home afterwards. Â I have to say with a broken heart this was to be her last outing with us as she suddenly passed away at her home on July 10. If it had not been for the Canada Day celebrations, my wife and I may not have been in Bobcaygeon that weekend. City Hall Active Transportation Plan On Its Way By Pat Warren
Recently, COKL Council endorsed the Bobcaygeon Active Transportation Plan prepared by Cambium Inc. for Environmental Action Bobcaygeon. The local environmental group wanted to do something special for the community to celebrate Canada’s sesquicentennial; they decided that active transportation was the way to go. Active transportation is any form of transportation that is human powered, including transport for persons using assistive mobility devices. The group applied for and received a Trillium grant of $55,000 to fund the development of an Active Transportation Master Plan (ATMP) for Bobcaygeon that will help make the community safer, and a more convenient place to walk and bike. The committee, with direction from the consultants, held many community meetings to garner input into the plan. These forums were well attended and many great ideas were brought forward. The plan has many suggested actions and projects that will help Bobcaygeon become a more active community and an even more attractive tourist destination. Some of the projects in the plan are well on their way or have been completed. As a result of a partnership with a local community group Impact 32, funding for directional signage and the “Bike Share” program have been secured through the local CHEST fund and a tourism grant from the Province. The Trent Severn Waterway also partnered in the initiative. Bobcaygeon visitors and residents alike can now rent bikes at the kiosk just north of the swing bridge. Some of the other projects on the books include traffic calming initiatives, bike repair stations, laneway and parking lot improvements, family friendly bikeway and final bicycle route assessment/improvements. Wheelchair-accessible beach access and crosswalk improvements are also being considered. The plan will allow both the City and EAB to secure further funding to help build future infrastructure projects in the village. Happy Sesquicentennial Bobcaygeon!

10-YEAR FINANCIAL PLAN
City of Kawartha Lakes Council has taken a definitive step to ensure the municipality has the means to take care of everything it owns and manages for the foreseeable future. At the July 11 meeting, Council adopted a 10year Financial Plan that outlines a strategy for raising the required funds to cover capital and operating deficiencies while paying off a transitional debt by 2027. This is the City’s first long-term financial plan to help maintain service levels and existing assets. Since the Core Service Review began almost 2 years ago, Council has received reports of the extent to which the City’s assets, including a vast array of buildings, parks, roads, bridges, fleet and July 28, 2017 - The Kawartha Promoter

oversaw the development of the Asset Management Plan that informed the new plan. He said, “The City has a $30.3 million problem. About a third of that is infrastructure deficit, a third is a tax support gap and a third is our capital reserve deficiency.” He continued, “Recent indications of the problem include a variety of emergency repairs to assets such as the roof at City Hall, the Old Gaol Jail wall and multiple sand domes. Service deficiencies, such as the unacceptable deterioration of paved and gravel roads, are occurring due to lack of capital investment and maintenance.” Found explained in his report and presentation to Council that continued deferral of capital investment and maintenance is not an option. Continued depletion of already highly inadequate reserves is also not an option. There are only two ways to solve the problem our City has been facing for many years. One is to reduce service levels, and the other is to maximize non-tax revenue and bring the tax levy and capital reserves to sustainable levels. The 10-Year Financial Plan includes a $25 million debenture (low interest loan) that facilitates the transition to financial sustainability and lessens the sharp impact of the 2018-2019 operating pressures. It also stabilizes forecasted average tax increases and provides for a controlled decline in tax increases over

the 10 years of the debenture. “We can’t maintain over $3.2 billion of assets on tax support alone. It is time to face our financial situation and realize that smart borrowing will allow us to take care of everything we own, with a plan to pay it down steadily over the next decade. Anything else is continuing to bury our heads in the sand,” commented Mayor Andy Letham. TRENT LAKES COUNCIL NOTES
Here are a few of the “highlights” from the July 11 Trent Lakes Council meeting (taken from the minutes): • New Fire Trucks: Council awarded the tender for the delivery of two new pumper fire trucks at a cost of just under $805,000. •N ew Roof: The tender for replacement of the roof at the Municipal Office was awarded to T. Hamilton & Son Roofing at a cost of $60,000 plus tax. Council also authorized the transfer of approximately $10,000 from general reserves to cover the difference between what was budgeted and the tender amount. •N ew Public Works Depot: Council approved Greenview Environment Management to proceed with the detailed engineering, design and construction document preparation for the new centralized public works depot at a maximum upset cost of $90,000.
COUNTY OFFICIAL PLAN MEETINGS
Representatives from Peterborough County will be holding an Open House to introduce the development of a new Official Plan to the public, to gauge community interest in the project, and to obtain input and feedback on the current Official Plan. The new Official Plan is being developed as part of the statutory review required under Section 26 of the Planning Act and would repeal and replace the existing Official Plan. The new Official Plan applies to the entire geographical area of the County of Peterborough.

The County Official Plan also currently contains detailed land use policies for four lower-tier Townships, and a fifth Township has expressed interest in adding its policies through this project. The five Townships with detailed land use policies are Asphodel-Norwood, Douro-Dummer, North Kawartha, and Selwyn, with Trent Lakes policies to be added. The meeting for Trent Lakes is scheduled for Saturday, July 29 from 1 to 3pm in Council Chambers at the Municipal Office.

When Pam Cassidy arrived in Bobcaygeon 7 years ago to become Post Master, she did not take the usual career path as so many have before her at Canada Post. Pam is a veterinary technologist by training, and after working at a busy animal clinic, Pam was hired by University of Toronto to work in their cutting-edge animal research labs. Pam loved the work, but found the commute from her Beaverton home to be just too much with a young family vying for her precious time. Pam went looking for a challenging and interesting position closer to home, and 9 years ago began working for Canada Post. First, she worked as a term employee in Beaverton and then as a part timer in Cannington. A few months after being hired as senior assistant for the Bobcaygeon post office, the position of Post Master came open. Pam began a series of gruelling interviews against multiple candidates. Since being fortunately chosen as Post Master, she hasn’t looked back. Pam has fallen in love with the village of Bobcaygeon and its people. The community is an interesting mixture of seniors, young people, tourists, and snowbirds. The only thing they all have in common is the post office. Whether helping people mail letters, pick up parcels, buy Canada 150 coins, or provide assistance with the Canada Post website, Pam and her staff of JoAnne Harvey, a 38-year veteran of Canada Post; Kelly Valyear; and Joan Robson enjoy the variety that their work offers. Pam loves the interaction with her customers, and joked that she now knows more people in Bobcaygeon than her hometown of Beaverton. The post office itself services the 1,200 families in the village. There are four rural routes with 3,010

individual stops. The rural route drivers cover all the way north to County Road 49, west to Fairbairn and East Beehive Drive, to Edwina Drive in the east, and about half way down Pigeon Lake Road in the south. Pam hopes that her stay in Bobcaygeon has just nicely begun, and is looking forward to many more happy years servicing the people and businesses of Bobcaygeon and north Verulam Township.
JUST ANOTHER LONG WEEKEND
It’s great to have another long weekend in the summer, and the Civic Holiday in August is no exception. It’s one of those holidays that doesn’t have a jazzy name or real reason for being, except to give some people another day off work! There are references to civic holidays dating back to the mid-1850s when various cities in Upper Canada (now Ontario) scheduled a public holiday in August. The date of the holiday varied year by year and was proclaimed by the Mayor. Shops were closed and the day was spent with picnics and railway and steamer excursions. The civic holiday eventually solidified on the first Monday of August. In 1969, the holiday was renamed Simcoe Day in honour of the first Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada. A motion at the Ontario Municipal Association to extend that name across Ontario failed. So that left it up to different cities and municipalities to call it what they wanted. In Peterborough, for example, it’s known as Peter Robinson Day, after the founder of the city. This “holiday” is not actually a statutory holiday in Ontario, although federal and many municipal governments give their employees the day off with pay. It doesn’t matter what you call it, there will be plenty of events and activities to do that long weekend. So get out and enjoy!

ENBRIDGE HEARS FROM RESIDENTS

76 year old Bill Vann has lived in Bobcaygeon since 2011. He says he currently pays anywhere from $2,100 to $2,300 a year for propane to heat his home. Vann is excited about the prospect of natural gas coming to the area. “Based on the scale here, we would save about $500 a year.” Vann was one of a number of local residents who came out to a public information session held by Unbridle Gas in Bobcaygeon on July 19. The purpose was to consult with the public on its plans for a proposed new natural gas pipeline leading into Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls. City of Kawartha Lakes Council voted to support the initiative in June and also agreed to provide about $3 million dollars over 10 years by deferring taxes that the company would otherwise pay. The $65 million project needs approval from the Energy Board before it can go ahead. The company tried to bring natural gas to the area in 2005 but was denied approval by the energy board. Tanya Bruckmueller of Enbridge says they are confident the outcome will be different this time around. “Things have changed significantly since then, there’s obvious growth herein the community,” she said. “There’s a number of new residences and new businesses as well as the government process and calculations have changed and that will make it successful this time.” The plan is to bring the lines from Cowan’s Bay along County Road 17 and into Bobcaygeon. Enbridge has until July 31st to apply for the government grants. It is projected that construction will begin in Fenelon Falls in the spring of 2018 with customers coming online in the fall. Bobcaygeon will follow in 2019. Officials say natural gas could save the average homeowner more than $800 a year.

Gallery on the Lake in Buckhorn will be featuring the works of renowned Indigenous artist, the late Norval Morrisseau and his son, Christian. There will be about 25 pieces in the exhibit, entitled “Father and Son” that runs from July 29 to September 1. Norval Morrisseau is considered to be one of the world's most famous Indigenous artists. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, July 29 from 1 to 4pm. Located just off County Road 36, 3km east of Buckhorn, the Gallery is open daily from 10am to 5pm.

For more than 50 years, Trent University has incorporated traditional teachings and perspectives into its curricular and extra-curricular programming. In fact, Trent’s groundbreaking leadership in Indigenous Studies dates back to their beginnings, when they became the first university in Canada, and only the second in North America, to establish an academic department dedicated to the study of Indigenous peoples and Indigenous knowledges. In June, the institution announced a significant addition to its history instilling Indigenous reconciliation in the institution’s everyday work with the approval of 11 key recommendations, among them the naming of the Chanie Wenjack School for Indigenous Studies. The announcement of the newly-named School was among a substantial series of recommendations, furthering Trent’s leadership in Indigenous reconciliation and education. The recommendations include an innovative lecture-talk series that will bring prominent Indigenous leaders to the University to speak on Indigenous issues, and a new academic requirement for all undergraduate students to successfully complete at least 0.5 credits from an approved list of courses with Indigenous content. With this recommendation, Trent becomes only the third university in Canada to institute mandatory Indigenous course content. “The naming of the Chanie Wenjack School for Indigenous Studies and the implementation of the associated recommendations are a milestone in the evolution of Indigenous Studies at Trent,” said Dr. Leo Groarke, president and vice-chancellor of Trent University. “We aim to educate Indigenous and non-Indigenous students about Indigenous history, traditions, cultures, and ways of knowing. We are striving to make Indigenous reconciliation part of our everyday work and consciousness.” Chanie Wenjack was a young Anishinaabe boy who died in his attempt to escape residential school in 1966. The Chanie Wenjack School of Indigenous Studies brings together Trent’s undergraduate, master’s and Ph.D. programs under one School and unites various events, initiatives and spaces dedicated to Indigenous perspectives, knowledge and culture at the University. Prior to the launch of the Chanie Wenjack School for Indigenous Studies, Trent University paid tribute to Chanie and other residential school victims and survivors when Wenjack Theatre, the largest lecture hall on campus, was named in his honour in 1973.

Kawartha Lakes Police say significant frauds are on the rise in the City. At the Police Services Board meeting on July 17, Inspector Mark Mitchell outlined recent crime statistics for Lindsay. Mitchell commented that assaults were down with only two assaults reported in June. The one crime that is on the rise, though, is fraud and three major frauds recently have police concerned. • A local tire business is out almost $10,000 after a fraudulent credit card was used to purchase tires. • A Lindsay travel agency lost more than $6,500 in a similar incident. • A Lindsay resident contacted the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service to report a fraudulent debit of
RENAISSANCE ART IN BOBCAYGEON
Renowned artist, Neil Blackwell, is having an art show and sale at the Boyd Library Gallery from August 1 to September 30. While Neil may be known by many for his wildlife art, his latest paintings are of the Rennaisance style. His works have been sold around the world to major collectors and numerous private collections in Canada, England, United States, Sweden, Saudi Arabia, Paris and Japan. Neil has won a number of awards for his wildlife art and is a three-time winner for Canada’s Duck’s Unlimited stamp and print portfolio. Neil and his wife Linda closed their gallery and gift shop (Bayview Art) in Bobcaygeon and retired in 2009. But Neil still paints every day and when asked when he thinks he may quit, he smiles and says, “when I stop breathing.” You can meet Neil at the Boyd Library Gallery on Saturday, August 5 from 10am to 2pm. Kawartha Conservation staff will hold an open house on the Four Mile Lake Management Plan to present key findings and draft recommendations at the Burnt River Community Centre on Saturday, July 29. The two-hour open house, from 10am to 12 noon, will provide an opportunity for staff to discuss feedback received from the community on the second draft of the plan, as well as to receive public input on the content of the draft plan. “The open house will be the culmination of public input and consultation and represent the feedback we have received during the past year,” explained Aquatic Biologist Brett Tregunno. “We have heard from lake residents and incorporated a lot of their recommendations and feedback.” “This is a plan for the long-term health and sustainability of Four Mile Lake,” Mr. Tregunno continued. “This plan is unequivocally for the lake residents and in consultation with them.” Now in its second draft, the open house will be the final round of public consultation before staff finalize the plan and present to the Kawartha Conservation Board of Directors later this year for approval. The open house will be held at the Burnt River Community Centre. Everyone is welcome.

BAD NEWS/GOOD NEWS Human Trafficking is not just a big city problem

Among the beautiful lakes, lush greenery and wide open spaces in the Kawartha Lakes lies a dark, mostly hidden scourge called Human Trafficking. Durham Regional Police charged a man with a number of Human Trafficking-related offences on July 14. They say a Whitby woman was being trafficked out of a motel in Oshawa. Human trafficking charges are rare but the act itself is not as uncommon as you might think. Since last December, eight girls have been rescued from Human Trafficking in the City of Kawartha Lakes. They are trafficked from local hotels, homes and even off the side of the road. City of Kawartha Lakes Police Const. Ryan Boutin says girls as young as 13 have been rescued and the victims are often moved all across the country to work. “The issue with human trafficking is it’s a Canada-wide problem, an Ontario problem and a Lindsay problem,” he says. The good news is Haliburton Kawartha Lakes Brock MPP Laurie Scott has been working hard for two years to raise awareness. “I introduced legislation called Saving the Girl Next Door because that’s where these young girls are being lured from -- our communities and small towns” On May 14, the legislation Scott introduced became law. Bill 96, the Anti-Human Trafficking Act, based largely on MPP Scott’s Saving the Girl Next Door Act, received
unanimous support in the Ontario Legislature. Haliburton Kawartha Lakes Victim Services onetime funding of $18,000 allowed them to hire a parttime victim advocate who focuses solely on human trafficking. “We work with our police and justice system counterparts to provide emergency exit bags, we call them “go bags”’; shelter; and make arrangements for emergency transportation,” says Laura Proctor, Executive Director, Haliburton Kawartha Lakes Victim Services. But the new, dedicated unit allows them to do a lot more for survivors. They can access $10,000 for residential treatment, $2,000 for victim and family counselling and $2,000 for crime scene cleanup. They can also now provide $2,000 for dental care and $2,000 for tattoo removal. Proctor says most of the victims have been “branded” with tattoos so that other pimps know this girl is already “owned.” We can all do our part to combat the issue. Police say parents should look for sudden changes in their child’s lifestyle, monitor their cell phone and social media activity and have an open dialogue about it. Hotel/motel owners can report suspected human trafficking and we should all watch out for our neighbours. If you see someone you think might be in trouble, ask if they need help. As many of you know, each year I hold a series of Town Hall meetings across the City. The purpose of the meetings is to share the bigger picture of Council decisions, how your money is being spent and the ways we’re moving ahead as a municipality. What I enjoy most about these meetings is the chance to hear your point of view about the direction we’re headed. This year we’ve had some very frank conversations about balancing what we all need and want. Topics we’ve touched on include development and growth, city revenue and expenses, and of course, roads. I’ve presented detailed information and admitted that we need to take better care of our roads. Each year we spend $32 million dollars on our roads – and still it’s not enough. We are seeing a steady deterioration of our roads and we need to spend more. The same goes for the condition of many of our City’s buildings, community halls, arenas, depots and parks. We have $3.2 billion of assets to take care of, and many of them are in their senior years and will require significant upgrades in 2018 and 2019. To address these financial pressures, Council has endorsed a 10-Year Financial Plan. It will allow us to maintain service levels while looking after our assets and protecting taxpayers from sharp increases. The plan includes a low interest loan for $25 million with a schedule to pay it back within 10 years. This is the only way we will get ahead of the infrastructure and operating pressures that have been building for years. Many of you supported this plan as we discussed it, and although $25 million is a big number, we have the ability to borrow it safely and pay it back responsibly. Thanks to everyone who came out. LOCAL ARTISTS PAINT THE TOWN

The Beautification Committee of the Coboconk, Norland, and Rosedale area has consistently brought new initiatives to improve upon the visual aspects of living in, and visiting, the area. Each season brings many exciting projects, and new this summer season are the banners that decorate the towns. With the help of local artists, each banner hung in Coboconk, Norland, and Rosedale is a hand-crafted work of art. Artistic expression has an important role in local culture by bringing communities together, showcasing local talent, and reinforcing values. The Coboconk, Norland & Rosedale banner project has continued that tradition. The project is the combined effort of both artists and small business owners. The banners were sewn and grommeted by Dinah Wilson of Dinah’s Decor, and were then primed on both sides and given to local artists Brenda Mulholland, Ian Ball, Gail McFadden, and Denise Livingstone to complete. In effect, each banner is two very large paintings. The painted banners showcase a number of different pictures, including animals and landscapes that reflect the natural elements of the area. One of the four artists, Brenda Mulholland, is experienced in mixed media and was inspired by the chance to work in a completely new medium and display. Her two banners, the snowy owl and the grey jay, can be seen in Coboconk and were inspired by the Canada 150 theme. However, the banners hold more meaning to Brenda than to just be visually pleasing. The banner project has strengthened the importance of art in small communities. Reflecting on
her background in teaching, Brenda says that one of the roles that art has in our community is to educate, stating that “everything we do teaches somebody, whether we know it or not. It is a community effort”. Responsible for the bulk of the creations, as well as spearheading the project itself, Denise Livingstone of The Cricket’s Handbag is very excited about the project and hopes to add to the number of banners next year. In the Fall, the Beautification Committee will check over each banner for wear and fading “so that we can adjust our creative process, if necessary, to add to the longevity of each banner”, says Denise. The committee is also looking for more participants to contribute their painting skills for future banners. You can see more creations from Brenda Mulholland, Ian Ball, and Gail McFadden during the 32nd annual Victoria County Studio Tour taking place September 23 and 24, and September 30 and October 1. The free self-guided driving tour includes 33 local artists at 24 studio locations.

It is a collection of individual stories surrounding the Cyprus war of 1974, shedding light on the personal consequences of international conflicts, as well as Canada’s important role as peacekeepers engaged in this, one of the longest overseas missions in our country’s history.

The annual Kawartha Lakes Classic Cycling Tour has something for everyone. The Kawartha Classic has a variety of route options to choose from. For experienced cyclists the 160 and 100km routes offer beautiful scenery and a chance to explore our region. The 50km route is perfect for cyclists who want a relaxing ride or for amateurs pushing themselves towards longer distances. The 25km/13km trail routes are perfect for families looking to ride together. All routes are supported thanks to the army of trail vehicles, bike leaders and support volunteers. Regular aid stations are provided at key points along the route. Following your ride a full buffet will be available thanks to Boston Pizza. All funds raised from this event go toward supporting A Place Called Home, a charitable, non-profit organization that has been providing shelter and 24/7 support services to the homeless— and those at risk of becoming homeless—since 1995. They operate a 19 bed shelter for youth, adults, couples and families who have found themselves with no safe place to go at the end of their day.

You know it’s midway through the summer when the Fenelon Fair is here. On August 11, 12 and 13, the Fenelon Fairgrounds will be hopping with agricultural events, truck and tractor pulls, demolition derby and, of course the Midway and competitions. The livestock shows feature cattle, sheep and horses (and, of course, there will be goats to see). The Fenelon 4-H Club will hold its annual Achievement Day and there are many things for the kids to do. There’s the Field Crop competitions and Junior Exhibits. Some of the day’s highlights include the lawn tractor and ATV pull at 1:30; Children’s activities and the Pedal Tractor Pull at 2:30 while on the main stage during the day, country music with John Lester & Friends add to the down-home atmosphere. How many times have you heard the phrase, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know?” That’s even more relevant when you live in a smaller community. Keeping up with minor home renovations, for some, has never been simpler. Just googling a subject or watching a how-to YouTube video can help. But there are times when you have to realize that no matter how many times you watch the how-to video or read a manual, there will be those home repairs and renos that are just too much for you to handle. As we age (and yes, I am one of those), doing drywall repairs, renovating the bathroom or rebuilding the little garden retaining wall are jobs we just don’t want to deal with. With more than 35 years of experience in construction, Kip Weller is carving out a niche for himself in the “no job too small” market, since moving to the Kawarthas two years ago. “I prefer to take on
the smaller home and cottage projects,” he says, and “designing and building small-scale outbuildings, like bunkies, has become one of my specialties.” While he admits he’s not an electrician or a plumber, he does have the contacts to get that work done for you as well. Kip is most proud ohis reputation for reliability and dependability. “If I tell you I’ll be there at 8:30, expect to see me by 8:15,” he beams. Kip is also a certified home inspector, and believes his experience in construction is a big benefit. Having an inspection before you sell can identify problem areas that could be a “deal-breaker” for potential buyers. Knowing about those problem areas, and fixing them before your home goes on the market could mean a quicker sale. Next time somebody says “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know” I can say I have one of those guys when it comes to projects around the house. His name is Kip Weller of Weller Home and Cottage.

For the past 8 years, Connexion Corp., a trade and agribusiness consulting firm in Colombia, has been working to bring Canadian sheep and goat genetics to South America in an effort to help Colombian farmers as they diversify and attempt to increase farm income. According to Mr. Higuera, Ambassador Lloreda was not only impressed by the quality of the genetics, but also the hard work that Lloyd has put in over the past few years, exporting animals all over the world. The project undertaken by Cannexion and Lloyd’s farm will have a positive impact on youth and women in Colombia, who are active participants in the small ruminant value chain. They recently completed a project funded by Global Affairs Canada to help improve this industry in Colombia.

For the past several months, City of Kawartha Lakes workers have been hard at it replacing the watermains along Main Street in Bobcaygeon. There has been limited access to several of the arterial streets as crews dug pipe, hauled dirt and gravel and laid new curbs. By the time you read this, the work should be completed – newly paved roads, new curbs and stone accents. There’s some new Canadian research out that suggests that artificial sweeteners such as sucralose, stevia and aspertame may be, in fact, harmful. Scientists at the University of Manitoba have found that what we thought was better for us than sugar may be tied to long-term weight gain, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and even heart disease. According to Global News, the study’s lead author, Dr. Meghan Azad said there isn’t strong evidence that sweeteners are beneficial. While Azad’s study didn’t identify exactly what it is in artificial sweeteners that could be responsible, she indicated it simply points to a link. You can read her full findings in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

For years, stainless steel or brass wire brushes have been used to clean barbeque grills. In the last couple of years, there have been reports of people being rushed to the ER because one of the steel or brass bristles have made their way into the food. In fact, an estimated 1,700 Americans went to an emergency room between 2002 and 2014 after having ingested wire bristles in grilled food, according to a study published in 2016 in
the journal Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Now, according to CBC News, Health Canada has started a risk assessment into the products, after receiving nine incident reports since 2011. According to Health Canada spokesperson, Eric Morrissette, they’ll evaluate the results of the assessment to determine if the products should be recalled. Health Canada is asking that anyone harmed by a wire bristle being ingested should report the incident to the manufacturer or the store where it was purchased.

They should also fill out an incident report form on Health Canada’s Consumer Product Safety website. There’s no time limit set for the assessment, so in the meantime, you might want to choose an alternate tool to clean the barbeque grill. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
If you’re going to get rid of your bristle grill cleaning tool, here are some other ideas:
• An old grill cleaning trick is to take an onion, cut it in half and use the cut side to scrub the hot surface clean. The moisture in the onion steams the surface clean while onion enzymes break down tough, grilled on food. Use a fork or tongs to hold onto the onion. • A cleaning stone works like sandpaper for a cooking grill. The stone forms around the grill grates and removes any burnt-on food and debris from the top of the grill grate and in between the grates.

• The metal helix grill brush does a good job cleaning the grates. The metal coils get in between the grates and remove any burnt-on food. It’s easy to handle and glides over the grates quickly and easily. • The wood grill brush is another popular choice, but it may take some time to actually work effectively. The wood is supposed to form grooves when moved back and forth over the grill grates, but that has been shown to take a long time moving it back and forth over the hot grates. • And here’s a homemade remedy -- turn your BBQ on to normal temp then turn off. Make a ball of aluminum foil, dip in water, sprinkle baking soda on ball then scrub grill. Once clean, oil the grill. Check with your local barbeque dealer or hardware store for more options.

figured it was time to get the necessary paperwork redone. There are basically two Powers of Attorney – one for personal care (medical decisions) and one for property (e.g., homes, bank accounts, bills, investments). You can choose one or more people you trust to assign as your POA. Most people opt for their spouse as the first choice, but it’s important to name a second person – someone you trust to make the tough decisions, especially when it comes to medical care. This is another tricky conversation to have but one that should be had. What if you become mentally incapacitated after an accident or serious illness? What are your wishes when it comes to resuscitation or end of life? You have to make sure they know what you would want to carry out your wishes in a difficult time. If you don’t have signed Powers of Attorney, a stranger may be assigned by the government to decide what’s right for you – medically or financially. It doesn’t cost a lot of money or take much time to do it, so it’s easy to put this power into the hands of someone you trust. A Will is a whole other kettle of fish. This is a document that takes effect upon your death. You appoint an Executor (again, someone you trust) to make sure your assets and possessions are directed properly when you die. There are a number of reasons you should have a Will but the most important is to dictate where your assets will go. If you don’t have a will, your family won’t have any say in these important matters. Instead,
the Province could become the primary decision maker, hardly an ideal situation. You don’t need a lawyer to prepare a will; there are plenty of websites that can give you the proper forms. It sure makes it a lot easier when there’s a professional who can ensure all the “i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed.” We called in Peter Kratzmann, an experienced lawyer who recently moved to Bobcaygeon (I saw his ad in The Promoter). What I especially liked was that he came to our home to discuss our needs. It was a simple process, mainly because we have no children and our “estate” consists of a house, a couple of cars and some stuff. Peter understood our needs and walked us through the process. Within a few days, we had the renewed paperwork – signed, sealed and delivered. Madeline Cavell Thomas (Noah)
Madeline Thomas, long time resident of Whitby, Ont. passed away peacefully July 6, 2017 in Bobcaygeon at the age of 94. For her last few years she was lovingly cared for at the Carriage House in Oshawa and recently the Case Manor in Bobcaygeon. Madeline was the daughter of the late Aletha and Harry Noah Sr. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of almost 60 years, John L. Thomas in October 2002. Greatly loved Mom to Nancy Winter (Gary), Wayne Thomas (Susan), Judy Diltz (Steve) and Peggy Pflanzer (Peter) . She was also cherished Nan to Leanne, Philip, Craig, Mark, Sandy, Marcie, Erin and Michael as well as 14 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren. Madeline spent her life caring for others whether in her nursing profession, as a wonderful neighbour and friend, pet sitter or an amazing mother, wife, daughter, sister and grandmother. Our Mom will be greatly missed by all who knew her but will always be with us in our hearts. A special thank you to all of the wonderful staff at Case Manor in Bobcaygeon who cared for Maddie during the last 2 years - Angels like Rica, Tracy R., Kelly D., Melissa J., Joan, Kelly J, Michelle, Kathy W., June O., Amanda, Bonnie, Crystal and “so many more who were so kind and thoughtful”. BOBCAYGEON RESIDENT PARTICIPATES IN CROSSCANADA CYCLING TOUR

Unleash Your Potential is a national health and wellness campaign and cross-Canada cycling tour seeking to motivate, inspire and educate Canadian youth. It has been a student-run initiative since 2005; all recruits are students attending the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto, Ontario. Bobcaygeon resident, Jared Barrieau, was selected to the team in the fall of 2015 and has spent the last 2 years training for his trek across Canada this summer. As a team, the group covers between 120km to 220km a day with speeds averaging around 30km/hr. Barrieau and his teammates started their journey June 4 in Vancouver, BC and plan to finish by August 11 in St. John’s, NL. During their campaign, the team stops at schools and visits children’s programs in hopes of empowering children to take control of their wellness by making healthy choices in their everyday lives. It is the Unleash Your Potential’s belief that by educating youth about nutrition and exercise they can help create long-term lifestyle changes that will gear Canada’s youth towards a healthier future. Gallery on the Lake in Buckhorn will be featuring the works of renowned Indigenous artist, the late Norval Morrisseau and his son, Christian. There will be about 25 pieces in the exhibit, entitled “Father and Son” that runs from July 29 to September 1. Norval Morrisseau is considered to be one of the world's most famous Indigenous artists. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, July 29 from 1 to 4pm. Located just off County Road 36, 3km east of Buckhorn, the Gallery is open daily from 10am to 5pm.

Sixty-two students attended the annual Music Camp, hosted by the Bobcaygeon Music Council (BMC). For a week, students in both instrumental and vocal classes held at Kawartha Settlers’ Village. Instruction in every level, along with arts and recreation, were delivered by 14 instructors. Concert goers were impressed with the beginner band, advanced band and showcase choir, as well as chamber music and jazz groups. “The kids experience music emersion in a fun camp environment. They just can’t help coming out of the camp experience without improvement musically,” said Music Camp Director Bev Tombler.
