From my perch

Aaah, summer. I’m standing thighdeep in a warm, lazy river in the secret Kawarthas, waving a magic wand—a fly-fishing rod. Beneath that placid surface, just where the riffles end and the water deepens under the overhanging pine, smallmouth bass are lurking . . . waiting for my streamer to come drifting by. If I drop it in the right spot, and simulate the herky-jerky movements of a small, injured creature—a minnow, crayfish or nymph—then I’ll trigger the attack response and hook myself a fish. I love fly fishing in a river. It’s very intimate—no motors, low-tech. It’s over five decades since my uncle in New Brunswick gave me the fly reel I’m using now, and it was already four decades old when he passed it on. I’m standing in the same water as the fish, feeling the temperature and movement against my skin. I’m only feet away from my quarry, and a myriad little signs in the current and

the shape of the bank shape suggest their location. At this moment, there is nothing but me, the magical natural world in which I’m immersed, and the fish. I have forgotten all about the crazy politics and violence that seems to be festering around the world these days. Perhaps best of all, 100 metres upstream, my eldest son, Matt, is fishing too. As adults, we’ve never had this kind of time together before—with no distractions, doing something we both love, in a world we love. And when the river brings us closer together again, the chat and the laughter will be easy. We are connected. And we are happy. Aaah, summer.

Law enforcement, not racism

I am writing this email to address some of the untruths in your article of July 15 (From my perch, page 3). Firstly, I agree totally that ALL LIVES MATTER. I disagree that there is systemic racism within police services both in the United States and in Canada. Nothing can be farther from the truth. I recognize that not all police shootings are justified, but 99 percent have been proven to be. Most police shootings have involved officers being confronted by armed and violent criminal offenders who attempted to kill the officer or members of the public—or persons with a severe mental illness who at that time were in crisis. Do you expect officers not to protect their own lives or the lives of other members of the community? When do we hold the offenders accountable? The police don’t cause the events; they react to them. I challenge you to find one case of a drive-by police shooting, or one in which the officer started his shift and went out with purpose to locate and kill a member of the community (any race). I couldn’t.

To suggest that there is systemic racism means you are comparing the police to the KKK, which hunted down and tortured and killed members of the Black Community. The Black Lives movement flourishes due to the mainstream media and its own agenda. Newspaper editors require circulation and TV news editors require viewers. So hence why only the partial truth is reported. Where is Black Lives Matter when Blacks kill Blacks? Nowhere because it doesn’t suit their agenda. Case in point, in Toronto a couple of months ago a pregnant young black woman was sitting in the back seat of a car and was murdered for no apparent reason. Not a peep out of Black Lives Matter. Here are some statistics: 1) 90 percent of Blacks killed in the US—and 93 percent in Canada—are killed by other Blacks. 2) Of all the police shootings in the US in 2015, twice as many Whites were killed by police as Blacks. These statistics were determined by two studies, one done by Harvard University and the other here in Canada by McMaster University. Both studies also concluded there was no evidence to support systemic racism in Police Services. Where is that reported? Page 26 of course. I don’t mean to suggest all police officers are perfect and don’t make mistakes, they do. Police officers are human beings. When they make mistakes they are held accountable and are punished just like everyone else. It is very easy for the media to sit in their comfortable chairs and report the news (or part of it). It is a different thing to be there at that moment and make that split-second decision. To compare police officers in the US to ours in Canada is also unfair. US police officers face far more guns than here in Canada. Taking a human life is a very traumatic event for a normal person, and it destroys the officer physically, mentally and emotionally. In most cases it destroys his/her marriage and relationships with family and friends. There is a dramatic rise in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in police officers and other first responders. Criminals who attempt to kill police officers and citizens, don’t suffer from this because they lack any sense of remorse. So to suggest police officers don’t have any problems shooting Blacks is irresponsible. To mention that our forefathers enslaved young black men is also an untruth. Canadians never had slavery. In fact, we helped free thousands of slaves via the underground railroad. That occurred in the

United States, and yes at that time I agree it was in fact Systemic Racism. We are Canadians not Americans. I would support your “state-sanctioned killings” remarks if you were talking about countries like Russia, China, or the Middle East. The only thing “state sanctioned” in the US and Canada is law enforcement. Douglas Hodgert Bobcaygeon

Police need a little slack

I want to thank you for being brave to say in print that black lives and all lives matter. Even though distanced from it due to a Hungarian heritage, as a white man I too recognize my duty to own a part of the horrors that were brought to us by the slave ships. I agree with all you wrote except for using the same brush to paint all police officers with. They need a little slack, because they see on each shift the things that the average joe would require counseling to deal with, and they are surrounded by constant violence that builds a crust around a person. Some handle it better than others and some admittedly bring with them from childhood a mindset already damaged (especially in the United States). But not all are like that, and we need to realize that the kind of policing being done in our world today is far more of a thankless job than it ever has been. We have a lot to learn and society needs a major adjustment, but mental health professionals working within law enforcement are only beginning to scratch the surface of how to deal with a world evolving faster than our minds can handle it. Thanks for offering thought-provoking editorials. Joe Berta Bobcaygeon

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR:

I don’t normally add my own comments to Village Voice, which should be reserved for readers, but I feel my arguments in last issue’s “From my perch” are being misinterpreted. I was trying to make the point that our whole society (not police alone) is responsible for ongoing, embedded, systemic racism against Black people. The fact that 99 percent of police killings of Black people are found to be justified is part of

hours, buy smart thermostats and energy-efficient appliances. Hydro even offered cash or product incentives to do so. After a mild winter I noticed that Hydro had applied for an increase that was, incredibly, accepted by the Ontario Energy Board, to increase rates $3 a month to cover the low usage of electricity, the same electricity that we pay the United States to take away. Low Usage? Are you kidding me? Isn’t that what you wanted me to do, lower my usage? And even after they put this rate hike through, my next bill (pretend to be surprised) contained yet another insert urging me to “Save electricity.” I also read today that Hydro is applying for another increase that will only put your bill up 48 cents a month this time. No reason was given, but I heard a rumor that the CEO broke a nail. But this is no laughing matter. Every time Hydro acts outrageously and we do nothing, they get bolder until you get the absolute insult of the low-usage excuse. Yes in part we are to blame for not speaking out loudly enough. But shame on our municipal, provincial and federal representatives—who were elected to represent us and make OUR voices heard. Are they oblivious to this kind of nonsense? Did they not notice? A child of 10 (or younger) could understand the paradox and would have enough sense to speak up, loudly. Did you know that it costs $5 a megawatt to

produce our electricity, and the consumer is paying $50 a megawatt. Where and when does this all end? When every business and consumer has keeled over from capricious electrical-cost increases? What can we do? At present the only thing we can do is write letters to MPPs and councillors, sign petitions and make phone calls to all of the above. Tell them what you think. Insist on a referendum on the further sale of Hydro—or any other public asset for that matter. Our biggest obstacle is feeling that we won’t make a difference, or that we can’t change things. When I get those feelings, I remind myself that about 40 years ago a group of people got together and said: “You know, I’m not so keen on that smoking thing any more, let’s get people to stop it.” And here we are 40 years on and you can’t smoke on or in any building except your own home. Things do change, and we are the ones who collectively make that happen. But we have to act. Thank you.

masks a total lack of exemplary government service, thoughtful public policy, and wise financial management. Governments have become loan sharks. They take our money in taxes so we can’t afford to fund our own local improvements. Then they take their slice. This, at the federal level, amounts to 15 cents in every tax dollar. Kevin Page, the former Parliamentary Budget Officer, noted that by 2015, the average yearly compensation for civil servants would hit almost $130,000. Our money is returned to us through various agencies, such as the Trillium Foundation. That foundation dishes out about $119 million of taxpayers’ money to various well-favoured groups. However, the Trillium bureaucracy takes $14.9 million to do this work. That’s another 12.5 cents for processing just $1. The Trillium Foundation has 120 staff; there are several executives, 10 directors, and 51 managers. No-one has a rank less than co-ordinator. The most galling fact is that the majority of the work—the assessment of requests for funding—is done by 16 groups of about 13 volunteers each. Then Trillium just writes the cheques. In the end—with Trillium and the feds together—the taxpayer gets his $1 hot dog at a real cost of $1.275. And that would make a loan shark’s mouth water.

Many people need to understand that all bureaucracies expand until they have consumed all available funds. For government bureaucracies that time is never. They simply create debts for future generations of taxpayers, so they can spend more now. I think “Direct Democracy” is the only way to stop this madness. We are on top of a gigantic fiscal mudslide. Either the sane, prudent people who live within their means will take control—or we will all go down together. Peter Weygang Bobcaygeon

City Hall Council to cut $2.5 mill from budget

Kawartha Lakes council approved a July 12 motion by Mayor Andy Letham asking CAO Ron Taylor to do the impossible: cut $2.5 million from the budget next year—with minimal disruption to existing service levels. But not before Ward 6 Councillor Doug Elmslie had asked where the $2.5 million figure came from? Letham’s response: “It’s a good place to start.” Explained Taylor: “We will review all areas of our operating budgets and recommend where deeper cuts can be made, and that will be council’s decision later this year.” Detailed recommendations will come in the first draft 2017 operating budget. The city’s total operating budget is approximately $150 million. About one third of that is dedicated to staff payroll and benefits. But Taylor noted that “we are in the service industry, and it is our people who manage and deliver our needed local services.” “We are not a bloated bureaucracy,” he said. “We have shifted our way of doing business to critically review programs, services and processes, and have made necessary changes to find savings in our operations,” he said. “The city’s administration continues to be committed to this goal.” “We are striving to stabilize budgets to ensure that tax increases are in line with the cost of living, while improving our needed programs and services,”

City pauses for arena rethink

It appears Kawartha Lakes Mayor Andy Letham was listening during his flurry of town hall meetings throughout city communities earlier this month. He came to council July 12 with a memo on community centres—which council approved—that gives more weight to community needs, and not just financial concerns. Council approved his request to investigate further before adopting earlier staff recommendations to close some community centres and reduce the city’s 10 ice surfaces to eight. Letham said the staff suggestions offer “a very valid business model as the city looks for ways to deliver its services in a more efficient matter.” But he added that he and council had heard “valid concerns and constructive ideas from residents,” and now “feel it’s important to take the time to look at

different ways of creating a model that works—from not only a business perspective, but a community perspective as well.” This puts the arena-utilization strategy on hold until later in the fall. Council asked staff to look at:
 • Costs to refurbish the seven existing arenas and the resulting expected lifespans; • Costs to demolish a closed single-pad arena; and • Cost to build a new single-pad arena in Omemee to replace the Emily-Omemee Community Centre at the end of its life expectancy. Ward 2 Councillor Emmet Yeo and others asked why the Bobcaygeon Community Centre is not being considered for closure—as it is the oldest, it is built from wood, and it is on the border of the city? Director of Community Services Craig Shanks

Service Centres get the chop

Library staff in Bethany and Kirkfield will help with municipal permits and information as Kawartha Lakes closes its Service Centres in those two villages. Council approved July 12 the Core Service recommendation to move assets and human resources of the Bethany and Kirkfield Service Centres into the remaining four centres (Coboconk, Bobcaygeon, Lindsay and Omemee). The Bethany and Kirkfield centres will close Oct. 1 and the remaining centres will run five days a week from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Buy it to stop development, TL mayor By Glenna Burns

Picard Lake cottagers want Trent Lakes to keep an 11-acre parcel described as Block 20 on Picard Lake (west of Highway 507) as “open space”—the way it has been since 1985. Joanne Brown told council on behalf of the cottagers association July 12 that lake residents have come to view the land as open space for their own use. She told council Picard Lake is already full. Block 20 sits atop a steep cliff face that is difficult to access. Brown argued that it’s geographically unsuitable for development, and environmentally significant to the health of the lake. Council is considering selling the property to Linwood homes, which has offered $150,000. Mayor Bev Matthews said she had been expecting the association (which last appeared before council on January 19 after Linwood made its original offer) to bring forward its own offer to purchase the land. Brown said only a few Picard Lake Cottagers were in the financial position to contribute funds. Said Matthews: “It’s our job to look after the value” of municipal properties. Council postponed a decision and asked staff for more research.

The people are warm, the water is cool, and the adventure is big even in the smallest of places. The area and all it has to offer will inspire, dazzle, and welcome you back time and time again. Stop, take it all in, and experience Coboconk, Norland and the surrounding areas. Hayley Winterburn is a summer intern with the

Long weekend features pancakes, ducks and music

What better way to kick off an August long weekend of summer fun in Coboconk than with an old-fashioned Pancake Breakfast? Get ‘em at Christ Church, 12 Elizabeth St., from 8:30-10:30 am on Saturday morning, July 30. • The fun continues Saturday evening with The Knuckleheads performing on the patio at Coby’s Pattie House, while DJ Mat keeps the inside dance floor hopping. All music all the time from 8 pm to 2 am. • The weekend’s feature event—always a tonne of funne—is the Duck Derby Race, from 1-2:30 pm on Sunday, July 31. The Lions sponsor this annual event in partnership with the Kawartha Lakes United Way.

Cash prizes this year will be awarded to holders of the lucky ducks who place from first to fifth. Buy your tickets from Lions Club members for $5 each, or three for $10. • The Lions also offer more music right after the Duck Derby, with local band Seabreeze showing their Newfoundland roots in a variety of country, rock-‘n’roll and East Coast tunes in a free concert in the park. They’ll top it off with free hot dogs and drinks, too. • Later that evening, the Pattie House offers more live music from 9 pm to 1 am with Pickering-based band Stereoclypse on the patio and the main stage. DJ Klutch Live & Jason Brain will offer music for the dance floor all night long. It seems Coboconk’s the place to be in The Kawarthas for this long weekend of summer fun.

Driftwood Theatre rolls back into Bobcaygeon again this summer on its cross-Ontario tour of Shakespeare In the Park. And this time it’s bringing an updated version of the bard’s ultimate battle of the sexes—The Taming of the Shrew. Driftwood’s Shrew is set against the heightened backdrop of Toronto Pride 1989—a year when many social, sexual and racial advances seemed to be culminating and a new era about to dawn. But whaddaya know, 27 years later in 2016, we’re still struggling with questions of acceptance and equality between people of colour, people of all gender identities and people of all sexual orientations—which makes this play timely to the extreme. But for all its seriousness, Driftwood’s Taming of the Shrew is still Shakespeare—ever bawdy, exciting, funny and disturbing—only this time with things quintessentially ‘80s added to the mix, from Prince to Pretty in Pink. From July 8 to Aug. 14, Driftwood will bring this fiery romantic comedy to 28 locations across Ontario in The Bard’s Bus Tour. Bobcaygeon’s turn comes July 29, when Kawartha Settlers’ Village hosts the theatre troupe—with assistance from The Kawartha Promoter—in a pay-what-you-can performance ($20 suggested) beginning at 7:30 pm. Founded in 1995, Driftwood Theatre Group is Ontario’s first and longest-running outdoor touring theatre tradition. For 22 years, The Bard’s Bus Tour has brought emerging and established artists to parks and heritage sites across the province, focusing on communities with little or no access to professional theatre. You can purchase reservations at $20 each by calling 844-601-8057, or online at driftwoodtheatre. com. Chair and blanket rentals are also available.

You have to go back a l-o-o-o-o-ng way, to find the first Fenelon Falls agricultural fair, which was held on the present Fenelon Fairgrounds—then called Driving Park—on Oct. 9, 1888. For the mathematically challenged, that’s 128 years of fine Fenelon Fairs. The Fenelon Agricultural Society runs the fair every year to educate and encourage an awareness of agriculture in the greater community, and to help improve the quality of life of folks in the agricultural community. It does that by encouraging healthy competition to show off local agricultural produce and personally crafted items. It also features a host of complimentary activities that add up to a complete package of family entertainment. We’re talking the Gable Bros. midway, the Country 105 Video Dance, country music with John Lester and friends, a demolition derby—of course—horse and pony pulls, and even a children’s pedal tractor pull. But the heart of the fair is the agricultural events, and society president Mike Sims, says the selection of events proves “that we have something for everyone. We feature livestock shows including cattle, sheep and horses.” “We have Field Crop competitions and Junior Exhibits. Our ever-popular HomeCraft exhibits include a pretty spectacular show of quilts and some exciting demonstrations. All under one roof.” And of course, “the Fenelon and Bobcaygeon/ Haliburton 4-H Clubs hold their Achievement Day here and there are lots of things for the kids to do.” This year the fair has a particularly bold “Team Challenge,” which is open to all ages and challenges participants to use recycled materials to create a big and bold outdoor exhibit that is agriculture related. It could be a farm vehicle, farm animal, or whatever your creative mind and hands can conjure up. Speaking of creativity, the society is also sponsoring a “Community Service Project,” inviting fair attenders to place on or under their special “donation tree,” any article that you have made and wish to see go to a good home. This could include: mitts, hats, cuddle blankets, sweaters or Teddy Bears, for example. All items will be donated to the Victoria Disaster Fund or the Police services for accident or trauma victims, or any other organization the agricultural society finds worthy. “No matter what your favourite event is,” says Sims, “we hope you will come out and join us at the fair.”

SUMMERpalooza It’s Easy Being Green To the Lakes

By Julia Taylor

For a short period of my life I was a Kawartha Lakes cottager. I moved away. But eventually, I got sick of driving up every weekend—and moved back. During that period I remember hustling on Thursday nights each week to have everything ready to go up to the cottage on Friday after work. Then there was the reverse procedure, of packing everything up to head home for the week on Sunday nights. What a hustle. But I did it—every weekend— the whole time I lived out of the area. I did it so I could wake up and sit on that dock in the morning, and catch the water when it was as

calm as glass for wakeboarding. I did it for days on the boat, and watching the sun set on the lake. I did it because I love being on the lake. And let’s face it, that is why we’re all sitting somewhere in this beautiful cottage country right now reading The Kawartha Promoter, because we love our lakes. Much like our personal health needs looking after, so do the lakes. Everything we put down our drain and on our lawns eventually makes its way into the water table and into the lake. Let’s give back to the lake. It gives so much to us. Let’s take care of the lake like we take care of our health. Let’s show our love to the lake by being stewards. Switching to eco-label dish, laundry, and personal soaps, as well as maintaining or restoring natural shorelines and fertilizer-free lawns, are some small steps we can take that have a huge impact on the health of our lakes.

Over the Top

Now here’s something completely different—a 17-minute documentary film about peculiar and compulsive 70-year-old Lindsay resident Rick Harding and his outrageous stunts with which he has entertained himself and his hometown for over 50 years. It’s called “Over the Top,” a light-hearted profile that uncovers why Rick does what he does—from jumping over fences to jumping off bridges, and jumping into various exotic birthday adventures— and why he can’t stop. Over the Top, produced and directed by Durham Region doc-maker Cynthia Banks, will be the added, local bonus at the Academy Theatre’s next TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) screening on Aug. 9 at 7 pm, when it opens for the mockumentary feature “No Men Beyond This Point.” No Men Beyond This Point, is a comedy feature shot in the style of a documentary. Sounds under the Stars goes international

The “Sounds under the Stars” summer concert series in the Gamiing Nature Centre’s barn Hayloft is building momentum as the summer progresses. On July 23, it “went international,” says Gamiing director Mieke Schipper, with the addition of some surprise guests from Spain, China and Bulgaria. Borianne, Branco and Debra, very recent residents in the Bobcaygeon area, brought a group of friends with them to the house concert—along with a home-made ukelele and the goosebumpinducing voice of 11-year-old Tony Adelman. The next Sounds under the Stars Hayloft concert is Saturday, July 30 with Albert John Saxby’s Raven Mad Crow Society, followed by jazz, swing and pop tunes by Eileen and Robert Blake (Aug. 6), Local traditional music and history with banjoist Al Kirby and ukester John Bird (Aug. 20), and classic rock with The Down and Dirty Band (Aug. 27).

Local hero averts Chiminis inferno

Bobcaygeon native Wayne Shea’s quick and heroic action averted a fire that could have seen all of Chiminis/ Big Island go up in flames in tinder-dry, prethunderstorm conditions Sunday July 24. Wayne’s family and a friend, John Sproule, were enjoying themselves at Pigeon Lake’s famous Falls Bay sandbar in Sunday afternoon’s heat when “we saw the sky behind the island erupt in black smoke,” recalls Wayne—“like something had exploded.” They packed up and “screamed across the lake” to the far side of the island, where they saw a pontoon boat on fire. It was tied to one of the remaining docks from old-time shore-lunch days when parts of the island were used as informal, semi-private campsites and picnic areas. “There were about a dozen boats standing around watching,” he recalls. The pontoon boat was engulfed in flames, the dock was on fire, and even a few overhanging branches from the island had caught. “My Dad did not hesitate,” recounts daughter Nicole. He tied his boat to a tree, raced onto the shore and first made sure everyone was safe. “The fire looked like it was going to spread to the island,” says Wayne, who runs the Bobcaygeon

Fairgrounds and Trailer Park in his day job. He’d seen another fireball as the plastic gas tank on the boat went up just as they arrived so figured that was the last danger of explosion and it was safe to approach. “I managed to tear the front section of the dock off and break off the branches that were on fire. I don’t know I must have had a surge of adrenalin.” He pushed dock, boat and branches out into the water away from the island, then used a plank to splash water onto the fire, while John Sproule sprayed the fire by racing his jetski up close and swerving sharply to throw a wall of water over it. Within minutes they had the fire extinguished. Fortunately, no-one was seriously injured, although “I did get a bit of a flash burn on my face from the heat of the fire,” says Wayne, and one of the women from the boat suffered some smoke inhalation—“and of course, they were all traumatized.” Wayne didn’t get the names of the boaters, but said apparently they were from a nearby trailer park and were barbecuing on the boat (not the island) when the fire started. With Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service advising residents that the fire-hazard index has now gone from high to extreme, it may have only been Wayne’s quick—and fearless—action that saved 1,000-acre Chiminis from going up in flames, only months after area residents, businesses and governments had donated $1 million to honour previous owner Mike Wilson’s gift and retain the island in the care of Kawartha Land Trust. “That island is our heritage, man,” he says, laughing. “We did a lot of camping there when I was a kid. I’ve got a lot of stories I can’t tell you.”

They don’t call it ‘Giant Hogweed’ for nothing

THREE GALS & A GUY ART SHOW & SALE OIL, ACRYLIC, WATERCOLOR

10:00AM - 4:00PM

SATURDAY - AUGUST 13TH SUNDAY - AUGUST 14TH 18 COLE STREET, BOBCAYGEON

Giant Hogweed, a very large perennial plant with serious health risks, has been identified at three sites in Kawartha Lakes. Two are near the intersection of Killarney Bay Road and Chambers Road and one’s on CKL Road 121 near Kinmount. “If you come across (Giant Hogweed), or believe you have it on your property, do NOT touch it,” stresses Oliver Vigelius, CKL Public Works manager. The plant’s toxic, watery sap can cause severe burns, painful blistering and even blindness. Giant Hogweed looks like some native species such as Angelica, Queen Anne’s Lace, and Cow Parsnip. But unlike these plants, it can grow up to five metres tall with a stem 5 to 10 cm in diameter. The stem and leaf stalks are hollow, covered with coarse hairs, and are often purple-spotted. In summer, Hogweed produces a white umbrellashaped flower from June to July. “If the plant is on city property, call your local Service Centre to have the municipal weed inspector identify it,” suggests Vigelius. The city will have it sprayed with the herbicide glyphosate, and sever the flower if it’s going to seed. Depending on the plant’s size, it may take up to two weeks to die. “If it is on private property, we recommend hiring a professional,” Vigelius says. To report Giant Hogweed plants, call your local Municipal Service Centre at 705-324-9411.

Horoscopes

July 29 to Aug. 11 Melodie McCullough

Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) The summer may be half over, but that doesn’t mean the fun is going to stop any time soon. We see a healthy dose of good times still to come for you, Aquarius. Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) Feeling angry with someone, Pisces? They say forgiveness is the best revenge, but you and I know it isn’t always that easy. The best advice we can think of is to find someone with whom to talk it over. It always helps. Aries (March 21 to April 20) It may be hard to find sometimes, but there really is beauty all around us, dear Aries—usually in the simplest of things. Use all your senses. Taste the bountiful fruits and veggies of this time of year. Smell the delicious scents of the flowers and see and love their bright colours. Envelope yourself in the sounds of a warm summer evening, and touch everything there is to touch. Taurus (April 21 to May 21) It’s a small world, Taurus, and it seems to grow smaller every day. But there are still lots of chances to meet new and interesting people, make new friends, and discover something special about someone. They could even be on the other side of the world. Gemini (May 22 to June 22) “We may go to the moon, but that’s not very far. The greatest distance we have to cover still lies within us”—Charles deGaulle. Well, this is a fascinating quote, Gemini. Indeed, the depths of our own selves take a long time to discover.

Cancer (June 23 to July 23) Lucky in love, that’s you Cancer. That summer love you thought was just a fling? Nope. We think you’re in for the long haul. Experience it—and enjoy it. Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) You may be faced with some tough decisions, dear Leo, but we know you can handle them. Take this opportunity to ask yourself some important questions about the direction you wish to follow, and how you might get there. Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) Summer can be a delightful time for daydreams, Virgo. Savour these moments. And while you’re at it, why not decide to turn some of those dreams into reality? It takes works, yes, but it will be worth it. Let your dreams carry you on. Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) As you have, no doubt, discovered, Libra, love isn’t always easy. It can be messy and filled with conflict. But if real love exists, there will be ways to overcome the obstacles. Awareness of the other’s needs, communicating your own needs—it’s all tough work, Libra. Are you up for it? Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) A lovely surprise may lie ahead for you, Scorpio. Take note of purple flowers, as these may somehow play a role in what awaits you. Have fun. Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) Plans may oft go awry, as the saying goes, but maybe it’s for the best. Just keep on sailing along, Sag, and no doubt, something better will come by. Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) Don’t slow down now, Capricorn. You’re about to take the world by storm. Keep believing in yourself, and what you are doing. The planet needs you. Fly high.

for Reconciliation

By Glenna Burns

A local Truth and Reconciliation group in Bobcaygeon is joining with First Nations peoples and other groups across Canada to learn the truth about Canadian colonialism and First Nationssettler relations—and to find ways to reconcile. In conjunction with a successful showing of the Curve Lake film Oshkigmong: A Place Where I Belong, that drew about 80 people to Settlers’ Village earlier in July, the group has launched a website at www.trcbob.wordpress.com. The TRC group will be showing the film again at Settlers’ Village on Aug. 16, for those who missed it (or want to see it again). This time Anishnaabek historian Dave Mowat (who also appears in the video) will be on hand to talk about local treaties. So why reconciliation? Because we are Canadian. Because we live here. Because we owe everything we have to the agreements made between the original peoples here and the Crown/Canada. Because the treaties are not being honoured. Because it’s time to pick up our responsibilities. Because we care.

Health & Wellness The Skinny on Fat, Part 3 How to become a fat burner

The body is capable of burning both fat and sugar (glucose) as its fuel sources. The fat-burning state is called ketosis. The key to activating a state of ketosis is increasing the amount of good fat in your diet. Naturally you will eat less sugar and carbs due to the satiety you will achieve from your now-good-fat-heavy meals. There are highly concentrated MCT (Medium Chain Triglyceride) oils that boost your body into ketosis very quickly. You can also purchase a meter to test your blood and find out if you’re “in the zone.”

This means that you become a “fat-burner” instead of a “sugar burner.” So a diet ratio might be: higher fat (up to 6080 percent), moderate protein (15-30 percent), and lower carbohydrates (10-20 percent). These carbs should be complex carbohydrates. I am definitely, as a plant-based nutritionist, not going to skimp on greens (this is another topic of discussion for after we address the topic of fats). This fuel source ratio is excellent for reducing inflammation (the cause of nearly all diseases), effective for weight-loss, and a very powerful tool for people suffering from weight-loss resistance, brain dysfunction, thyroid disorders and other conditions. From my research, I feel it is extremely valuable to be in and out of ketosis (fat-burning mode) throughout the week, month, year—and to keep the body guessing and adapting. Note that you can—and must—modify a plant-based diet with healthy fats. The information below suggests animal-based fats as well, but vegetarians and vegans can substitute plant and algae-based fats, including nuts and seeds. Here are 11 simple ways to get started: 1. Start your day with a fat-packed smoothie. Use full-fat, unsweetened coconut milk as a base, and throw in some pastured eggs. 2. Keep your kitchen, travel bag and vehicle stocked with healthy fat snacks like nuts, hard-boiled eggs and grass-fed beef jerky. 3. Use only full-fat dairy products (if tolerated). 4. Sauté foods in solid saturated fats (stable for high

heat cooking) and make sure to use healthy cookware such as stainless steel, ceramic, and glass. 5. Consume darker and fattier cuts of meat and organ meat from healthy animals, including the skin and fat. BONUS: Make gelatin rich, gut-healing bone broth from beef bones or whole poultry or fish carcasses and use for soup stock or enjoy sipping straight. 6. Say good-bye to egg-white omelettes and eat pastured eggs with the bright orange yolks for healthy cholesterol. 7. Prior to serving food, drizzle with olive oil, melted butter or MCT oil. Top desserts or soups with a dollop of coconut cream, sour cream, or heavy whipping cream. 8. When choosing seafood, select the low-mercury, small fatty fish, like sardines, mackerel and anchovies, full of essential omega 3 fatty acids. 9. Ditch store-bought dressings packed with bad fats, and make your own with MCT oil or olive oil, apple cider vinegar, herbs and spices. Add some mustard, tahini or almond butter for creaminess. Keep in

the fridge ready to drizzle over salad, veggies and proteins. 10. When in doubt, throw in an avocado. Guacamole goes with everything. 11. Eat fat “straight-up” to balance blood sugar and provide quick energy. When short on time, I take a few spoonfuls of grass-fed butter oil or coconut oil and mix it with chocolate whey protein powder for a pick-me up. Benjamin Stone is a Certified Hippocrates Health

Minaajim: Good Stories from Curve Lake First Nation Three Men and a Mouse

As told by Doug Williams to Julie Kapyrka

I was raised in Curve Lake as a young kid in the 1940s. My great-uncle Madden was my mentor. He was my grandmother’s brother. Madden and I went and lived on the land, literally, every day of the year. We followed the animals, we followed the seasons. We traveled here, there and everywhere in Mississauga Nishnaabe territory. One of the things I really enjoyed doing with him was visiting people. He was way older than me, he was born in the late 1800s and he had many friends. He and his peers at Curve Lake visited a lot with each other from house to house. That’s how the news got around, that’s how stories were told. These stories were not malicious. They were very fun-loving. We laughed about each other, we laughed about events, we personalized animals, and that kind of stuff. Well, one day, Madden says: “Let’s go and visit old Alan.” Alan was an old man who lived just south of the corners at Curve Lake in a log cabin on the right side. So we went there, Madden and I, to visit him. Those two old guys were talking about their younger days and I was really enjoying it. There was a beam that ran across that log cabin

in the middle, and that beam kind of sat just above the stove. Alan was cooking a beautiful smelling soup-stew type of food, and I was hungry and I was listening to the talk. It was warm. It was festive. It was just so beautiful. I was sitting back with my head back on the chair, looking at this beam, when I noticed a little mouse starting to cross it. He was going to go over from one side of the house to the other on this beam. But as he got over that fire and that stove area, he fell off and went into the soup. And those old guys were talking away there, and I was a young boy. I didn’t really want to interject. I didn’t want to say anything. And then old Alan went over and stirred the soup. He must have stirred that mouse right into the soup. It still smelled good. After a little while of them talking away and so on, and me listening, Alan says, “You wanna have some stew?” Madden said, “Oh that would be really nice.” And so Alan put the stew in three bowls. I was handed a bowl and expected to eat it. It smelled so good, and I was so hungry, that I ate the whole thing. I never did say anything to Madden until years later, and he just killed himself laughing. He told me that now it all made sense. Apparently some VIPs visited Alan just after we left that day, and he fed them the soup too . . . but that is another story.
