OVER THE BACK FENCE

Happy Canada Day! It’s (hopefully) the one day of the year we can put our political feelings aside and just be proud of the country in which we live. And we have so much to be proud of. Thousands of people from war-torn countries come to Canada for a chance at a new life. We have the freedom of speech and are able to voice our views peacefully without fear of political reprisals. We can leave our homes and walk down our streets without fear of a missile aimed at our heads. Women can drive cars and vote. Children have the right to a good public education. We are the home to sporting legends, world-renowned musicians and actors, award-winning scientists and internationally-acclaimed authors. Our healthcare system may not be perfect, but it’s still accessible and affordable. Our cottage country, from coastto-coast-to-coast is breathtaking and clean. We have more than 3 million lakes, more than any other nation.

While other countries still struggle with the issue, legalized same-sex marriage has been the norm in Canada for more than a decade. With all the drama going on south of the border, we can stand tall in our beliefs. Our leaders are not talking about building walls or segregating families. Our diversity and multicultural makeup are two of our best qualities. We are perceived by the world at large to be polite, kind and able to laugh at ourselves. On this Canada Day, I have no problem singing our national anthem at the top of my voice and waving our flag. I am proud to be Canadian. We all should, eh?

Way To Go Girls!

A wonderful group of women participated in the May 6 Community Care Hike for Hospice. In our June 14 issue, we provided a photo and cutline about their involvement. Due to space issues, we were unable to print more of their submission. But I think it’s important to publish it, so here is the submission by Monique Craig. “This was the third year our team leader, Nancy, joined the hike, a cause close to her heart, in memory of her son Jordan Coumbs-Fernall, who passed away on Mother’s Day May 10, 2015. The Bobcaygeon team, Gibson’s Girls, collectively raised $4,655, surpassing last year’s total of $3,149. It was an amazing effort by our team leader, we couldn’t have done it without her. A big thank you to all our donors for their generous contributions making us #1 team this year.” (Editor’s Note: We would also like to correct the name of Heather Cousineau, which was incorrectly spelled in the cutline).

This affliction has been at its worst when viewing municipal events; however, through no fault of his , Mr. Winter has given me a chuckle. In his report regarding the City of Kawartha Lakes lauding achievements in “Accessibility” they tout “audio assistance ... for those ... who are hard of hearing” and at the end of his report is a correction stating he “misheard” what was said at council regarding the Old Gaol. I laughed out loud, not at him but at the irony of the two items being together. J. Dell, City of Kawartha Lakes

Turn Indicators Are Not An Option

Unfortunately, there is a joke going around this town – that car manufacturers are now making vehicles especially for Bobcaygeon. These cars do not have any turn signals! Therefore, why bother as they can save about $350 by eliminating this option? I should explain that we have lived in this delightful and engaging town for four years now, and love it – the area, the lakes and the people who for the most part are friendly, pleasant and helpful. That is, until some get into their vehicles. Please give a “Turn Signal”. It’s bad enough when it’s not an early turn signal as the Highway Act requires. When everyone is going up, down, through and sideways every way, it is discourteous, inconsiderate and VERY dangerous as I have recently discovered. I suffered the idiot who was on his cell phone. I assumed he was turning left, only to be hit when the imbecile decided to turn rapidly to the right. The worst place in Bobcaygeon is leaving the Tim Horton’s drive-thru as a car’s turning right, left, and straight on, etc. Alas, I do not see any law enforcement to correct this lazy habit, which ultimately could lead to a devastating accident. Just read the latest news involving numerous death on our roads. In summary, I strongly recommend that we “proact” and not “re-act” and enjoy the lovely area. M. Smith, Bobcaygeon

The Mayor and Council certainly earned their keep on June 19, wading through a complex and varied agenda that took almost seven hours to complete. Important items included:

Short-Term Rentals

City staff completed a review of policy that might need to be implemented to deal with the ever burgeoning short-term rental market in the City of Bobcaygeon Kawartha Lakes. Staff have been researching this Fairgrounds issue since last summer, and after public consultation, suggested that no new policy needs to be put in place to deal with the complaints arising from certain property rentals. That suggestion set off a heated discussion among several councillors. • Councillor Stauble questioned the statistics compiled from an on online survey, fearing the numbers had T. 1 9 37 ES been skewed by multiple duplicate submissions and an overrepresentation of rental property owners answering the survey. D A I R Y • Councillor Breadner felt there was no need for more City legislation as he felt these rental properties were being unfairly targeted by their neighbours who called by-law officers over “petty” matters. • Councillor Pollard felt the concerns of the neighbours were being downplayed by the City, and he himself had received reports of dogs on the loose, noise, unsafe boating, garbage poorly disposed of, septic backups, huge and dangerous bonfires and trespassing by drunken renters. www.bobcaygeonfarmersmarket.com • Councillor Junkin wanted to know why these Beauful, low-cost nave properties weren’t zoned and taxed as commercial plants for your lawn & garden properties. • Councillor O’Reilly reminded those assembled that 74 CREATE POLLINATOR HABITAT percent of visitors who spend their holidays in the City Plant a variety of nave flowering of Kawartha Lakes stay in short-term rentals, and these renters generate $16 million in business throughout plants to support pollinators. the City. Kawartha Conservation Authority (KCA)

The KCA presented its five-year plan to Council to a mixed review. City staff, cottage associations, business owners and three councillors have been intimately involved in the process of formulating the KCA action plan. The KCA wants to encourage sediment control, shoreline restoration, aquatic plant control, low impact development particularly along shorelines, encourage agricultural best management programs, and support the planting of trees to prevent shoreline erosion. • Councillor Miller spoke glowingly of the work put in by the KCA, and encouraged other councillors to support this action plan. • Councillor Yeo questioned why only 45 percent of the KCA’s budget was spent on actual “boots on the ground” projects, while the rest seemed to be eaten up by research and administrative costs. • Councillor Junkin wondered if the KCA even had the authority to be doing aquatic plant control in the lakes. • Councillor Dunn questioned the lack of financial specificity in the KCA submission, fearing that money would be spent without the proper oversight. Council voted 15-2 to adopt the KCA action plan, which will be used by the City to determine funding of the KCA moving forward. In a parallel discussion, City staff recommended that the City’s relationship with the KCA remain the same moving forward, with the possibility of more cooperation and sharing of resources and expertise between the two groups. Councillors James, Breadner and Yeo spoke at length about constituent complaints regarding the Conservation Authority standing in the way of developments big and small all across the City. Councillor Breadner suggested that the KCA has been allowed by the City to become the primary approver of all building and planning permits in the City, which is the City’s job. All three councillors suggested that the KCA should get out of the permit approval process henceforth. By a vote of 14 to 3, Council approve a continued and collegial relationship between the City and the Kawartha Conservation Authority.

Shaft Park Development

Almost 90 minutes of discussion ensued about the potential development of the Shaft Park on Bond Street East in Lindsay. The City would like to build low-rise social housing on the site, but a local neighbour presented a deputation to Council saying that local residents were not properly consulted regarding the City’s plans for the site. This sparked a heated discussion on what was the best use for that prime piece of Lindsay waterfront property. • Mayor Letham and Councillors Breadner and O’Reilly suggested that the lot, with its pristine views of the Scugog River, should be saved for future recreational development as the City envisions what the future waterfront might look like. • Councillors Martin, James and Stauble opposed the project proposed by the City going forward until

1812

neighbours have been seriously consulted. • Councillors Elmslie and Dunn argued that, with the current shortage of social housing in Lindsay, the project should go forward because the need is certainly there. • Councillor Stauble also questioned the veracity of putting vulnerable people along a watercourse that has flooded in the past. • Councillor James proposed that the project be referred back to staff to see if a more suitable site for the project could be found, and received wide support from the other councillors. A report with other options will be presented by staff at a future council meeting.

QUARRY FIGHTERS win

By Glenna Burns

Dewdney Mountain Farms, a proponent in a long running battle to stop a quarry near Nogies Creek has cancelled the court process to appeal a Tribunal decision on the failure to provide an adequate haul route. In a letter dated June 12, 2018 the proponent’s lawyer David White sent a request to the Oshawa Divisional Court stating, “We have been instructed by our client to not proceed with our client’s motion for leave to appeal in the above mentioned matter. We therefore ask the Court to cancel the motion for leave to appeal scheduled for Thursday, September 27, 2018 at 9:30 am. We wish to advise the Court that no further materials will be served or filed.” This news came as a pleasant surprise to the group of appellants who have been fighting this proposed quarry development in Trent Lakes for many years. A support group called CFRAD (Citizens For Responsible Aggregate Development) was formed to raise funds and provide moral support. That group has since ballooned to include citizens from around the Kawarthas. Their mission has been to support responsible quarry development. In their view, constructing a mega quarry in close proximity to one of the major river systems (Nogies Creek) in the Pigeon Lake watershed was not good planning by the municipality. The future of this 400-acre site is now anyone’s guess. It does sit beside a Fleming College owned parcel so perhaps there is some interest in expanding the conservation lands the college now protects. In the meantime the appellants, friends and supporters will come together to celebrate on July 12, starting at 6pm at Kawartha Coffee Company in Bobcaygeon for an evening of music, live auction, country auction and silent auction. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event. Check out our 2nd location at Wilson Fields on Thursday 11 am to 5:30 pm. Heading into the municipal election on October 22, The Kawartha Promoter will provide profiles of all candidates in the City of Kawartha Lakes and Trent Lakes. Our political reporter, Kirk Winter, will conduct the interviews and write the profiles. We kick off the series with the current Mayor of the City of Kawartha Lakes, Andy Letham, who is the incumbent in this municipality.

Municipal election 2018

After a seven-hour Council meeting, I am sure that the last thing Mayor Letham wanted to do was sit down for a 40-minute interview with me, but with good humour that is exactly what he did. In a wide ranging interview, Mayor Letham spoke of the accomplishments of the current Council, his hopes for the future, his thoughts on a smaller Council and evening meetings, and his thoughts on the upcoming election. Pressing Issues When asked what he thought were the three most pressing issues for council moving forward, Letham produced a very eclectic and interesting list: • Letham spoke of the transition period that is coming up after the next election, as Council downsizes from 16 to 8 members. With fewer councillors, he says there will need to be adjustments with ongoing committee structures so they do not get stretched too thin. Letham also stated that this

next term would likely be his last as he feels an eight-year commitment to the all consuming job of being Mayor is long enough. • Letham is very proud of the City’s Ten Year Financial Plan, which has put the City on sounder financial footing, that only gets better every year. Letham looks forward to a time soon that the City can expand the services they are currently offering in a smart and fiscally prudent manner. • Letham concluded by saying that the development of the residential and commercial property on Colbourne Street opposite Wilson Fields, and the Bobcaygeon Beach Park will be major boosts to the local economy and tourism industry. Employment When asked what Council was doing to bring meaningful employment to the City, Letham said the first thing that needed to be done was create an environment where development will occur. Once the City’s reputation of “being open for business’’ is widely accepted, he hopes new jobs will follow.

Letham admitted that the future employers in the City will not likely be factories, but rather small, basement tech start-ups that employ 10 to 15 people, and businesses that supply services to the expanding population of the City of Kawartha Lakes. Smaller Council Mayor Letham is a big supporter of the new streamlined Council. He believes that this new structure will be conducive to maximum participation by all councillors in the decisions of the City. Evening Council Meetings Letham hopes that the possibility of evening council meetings might be revisited by the new council in an effort to make the meetings more accessible to the general public. October Election Letham hopes that Internet voting in the Fall will remove another barrier to voting, and will encourage a larger voter turnout. Letham is pleased that in almost all cases there are multiple candidates running for all council positions. As of June 19, Letham has two registered opponents including sitting Councillor Gord James, and seven of the eight council positions will also see competitive races. Letham encourages the competition, and believes it is good to have checks and balances in a democracy.

LETS TALK ABOUT YOUR INSURANCE sponsored by

Stewart Morrison Insurance

INSURING YOUR TRAILER, RV OR MOTORHOME?

Just like any other vehicle or home, you need insurance on your RV to protect you and your belongings. However, there is a distinct difference between most insurance policies and RV insurance because there are so many different uses. Depending on the usage and location of your RV, making sure the coverage fits your needs is paramount. An auto policy can be extended to your RV, but coverage is very limited. Features to look for when buying a RV insurance policy: 1.Liability insurance. You require liability insurance while out on the open road, and also if your RV is parked. 2.Guaranteed replacement cost. Make sure your policy offers the option to cover the cost of a brand-new model (even if it is more than what you bought it for). 3.Contents coverage. You can find policies (we know because we have them) that offer more than the standard industry coverage; such as items normally kept at your campsite, decks and sheds. 4.Emergency vacation expenses. If while on a road trip you run into trouble, this coverage will help cover you to get back home, or get back on the road. 5.Pet injury coverage. Should your beloved pet get injured out on the open road, this coverage can help you with unexpected vet bills. 6.Free emergency roadside service. This is an important feature as larger (more expensive) tow trucks are often required if you get stuck on the side of the road. Also, this coverage covers flat tires, fuel delivery and lockout service. If you have questions about commercial or personal insurance, call us and let’s talk.

Always bloomin’ beautiful

Submitted by Bonnie Jane Harris

When an Impact 32 team in Bobcaygeon came up with the name Vibrant Village, they also came up with a plan to back it up. Volunteers are making the village fun and attractive this summer, and people are showing a lot of interest in some unique new ideas. It’s all about the paddles this year, just ask anyone in town. The canoe paddle was chosen to reflect Bobcaygeon’s heritage as a main waterway route for both First Nations and settlers. And these are beauties! Seventy wooden paddles, each uniquely painted by local artists, are showcased on poles on the main village streets. As the summer season winds down, the paddle art will all be displayed at the Bobcaygeon Fall Fair and auctioned off to community members and merchants to raise funds for future beautification. LEGION HONOURS VETERANS

Submitted by Lisa Dever

Bobcaygeon veterans were honoured at the Bobcaygeon Legion’s annual Veterans’ Appreciation Brunch on June 3. Thirty-five veterans and their guests enjoyed a delicious turkey meal, complete with cake and ice cream for dessert. The brunch was one more way Legion volunteers work to show their appreciation for the sacrifice and dedication of our local veterans. Guest speaker Darlene Loucks gave a brief talk on the Yellow Ribbon campaign and shared some stories and letters from Afghanistan. Over brunch, she circulated a book of cards and letters from soldiers who had received the Yellow Ribbon care packages over the years. When it came time to cut the cake, Margaret Cameron, Past President, asked all veterans to stand. Through the process of elimination, it was revealed that three of the veterans present that day were in their late 90s. Of those three, 96-year-old Leslie Jack volunteered to cut the cake with Comrade Marg Cameron. Veterans and their caregivers can contact Branch 239 of the Royal Canadian Legion to sign up for veteran events, including next year’s Appreciation Brunch, at 705-738-2710.

GET YOUR PRIDE ON!

Submitted by Carrie Pearson

The fourth annual Kawartha Lakes Pride Picnic will be held on Saturday, July 14 in Victoria Park in Lindsay. It is gearing up to be another amazing event where the City of Kawartha Lakes is able to show how inclusive and welcoming it is to the LGBTQ+ members of our community and beyond. Local artist Evangeline Gentle will be there with a band in tow to entertain the crowd as well as Westerby Entertainment spinning some tunes. Picnic-goers can check out the various vendors and information booths while eating ice cream donated by the Kawartha Dairy. Kids can head over to their very own area to play games, get their faces painted and have balloon animals made for them. Our one-day picnic has blossomed into fullfledged Pride Week. Any and all members of the LGBTQ+ community and their allies are invited. We’re kicking it off with the Mayoral Flag Raising on Monday. Tuesday, you can get your game on at Boiling Over’s Coffee Vault. Artistic or not, everyone should sign up for the Paint Night on Tuesday. Get back to nature with a hike at Ken Reid on Wednesday. Kids should pop by for family storytime on Thursday at the Lindsay branch of the KL Library. On Friday, it’s a Pride Ride where you can spin in preparation for all of the ice cream you are going to eat the next day at the Picnic. The week ends with a Pride Celebration Service at the Cambridge Street United Church. For more information, follow them on Facebook at KawarthaLakesPride.

CANADIAN KIDS DOING AMAZING THINGS If our local young people are any indication, Canada is indeed a land of giving and realizing dreams. Here are just a few stories of local kids doing amazing things!

FOLLOWING HER HERO

Submitted by Gail Welch

Julie Norris is a graduating student at Fenelon Falls Secondary School. Knowing she wanted to continue her education, in February, she applied for the 2018 Terry Fox Humanitarian Scholarship. Earlier this month, Julie received the call to say she was a recipient of this prestigious award. The Terry Fox Award is open to all students who are Canadian citizens and are currently attending a Canadian University or will be starting undergraduate studies in the Fall. The Award reads: “In recognition of having demonstrated the highest ideals and qualities of citizenship and humanitarian service while in pursuit of excellence in academic, amateur sport, fitness, health and voluntary community service.

In so doing has reflected those ideals of courage, humanitarianism, service and compassion that Terry Fox embodied.” Julie was diagnosed with cancer in 2009. She has always shown true strength, compassion and bravery and she knows first-hand how to fight the impossible and win. Julie believes everyone should follow their dreams because they can come true. Julie works part-time for the City of Kawartha Lakes Aquatic Department and has volunteered at children’s camps, fitness runs held in her community and in the research clinics at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto. She has also been a student volunteer at the Ross Memorial Hospital for four years. Julie will be attending Ottawa University in the Fall in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Through her love of children she dreams of becoming a pediatric nurse (Hematology/Oncology). Her goal is to make a difference in the lives of children facing terminal illness or a health crisis. Julie believes Terry Fox was a true Canadian hero who united a nation and created a movement that will never again be seen in Canadian history. But his legacy lives on in young people like Julie.

MAKING AN IMPACT

By Glenna Burns

Canada Day reminds us to celebrate those people who bring credit to this nation. I’d like to tell you about one such group. Fenelon Falls for First Peoples (FFFP), is a prime example of how a few people can make a big impact on the lives of others. In conjunction with the Union of Ontario Indians, FFFP have organized and shipped 17 U-Haul truckloads of clothes, housewares, bedding/towels, food, toys, sports equipment, baby packs and new

mother’s kits to First Nation communities in Northern Ontario. The truck rental for each shipment costs the group $1,200, but that doesn’t stop them in their mission to help communities desperate for supplies. FFFP is the only group in Ontario doing this type of work. Elva Potter and other group members were honoured by the Union of Ontario Indians for their labours at a presentation of gifts and a plaque on Tuesday, June 12. FFFP hosted a thank you luncheon for volunteers and supporters at the Baddow Community Centre and invited two Union members to speak about the project and share their own stories. Rebecca Timms and Cecile Hookimaw presented the plaque and gifts, then informed the group of about 50 people from all over the region about their work and the good the project does for First Nations people in need. with the Union, shared her story of struggle and healing after five years in residential school and long struggles with addictions. She spoke of losing her children, fighting to get them back, learning how to parent, getting educated and making a commitment to spiritual healing through the Sundance ceremony. “There are not many success stories out there,” she said. “A lot of people are still holding on to stuff from the past. I want to show there are happy endings. GREAT CANADIAN INVENTIONS

By Deb Crossen

In addition to being some of the politest people on the planet, Canadians are known for some inventions that save lives, make life easier, and helped put our country on the map! Thanks to Wikipedia and Google, here’s information I dug up on my top 10:

IPL Hair Removal & Skin Rejuvenation

INSULIN: It was in 1921 that Canadian physician Frederick Banting and medical student Charles H. Best would be credited with discovering the hormone insulin in the pancreatic extracts of dogs. Their lifesaving medication is used today to treat diabetes and other diseases. ROBERTSON SCREW: After badly cutting his hand while using a slot-headed screwdriver, Peter Lymburner Robertson invented the square-headed screwdriver and screw in 1908. He received the Canadian patent for his invention in 1909. BLOODY CAESAR: The Caesar was invented in 1969 by restaurant manager Walter Chell of the Calgary Inn (today the Westin Hotel). He devised the cocktail after being asked to create a signature drink for the Calgary Inn’s new Italian restaurant. RETRACTABLE BEER CARTON HANDLE: Anyone who’s ever carried home a case of beer has Steve Pasjack to thank for making it easier. He came up with the design for the retractable beer case handle in 1957. INSTANT REPLAY: George Retzlaff of Winnipeg, Manitoba was a Toronto producer for CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada and used a hot processor to produce a wet-film replay of a goal during the 1955/56 season. SUPERMAN: The Man of Steel may not be a typical invention, but he is still important for a few different reasons. Superman is one of the most famous comic book characters of all time, and his introduction in Action Comics #1 in 1938 ushered in the era of superheroes.

Thank You for Supporting the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer

ZIPPER: The Hookless Fastener No. 2 was the name patented for what we now know as the zipper. Gideon Sundbäck gets the credit for the invention because his design didn’t have any major flaws. Sundbäck came from Sweden, but moved to St. Catherines, where he spent eight years to perfect Hookless Fastener No. 2.

PACEMAKER: In 1950, electrical engineer John Hopps consulted with heart surgeon Wilfred Bigelow and cardiologist John Callaghan to build the world’s first external artificial pacemaker. All three inventors were Canadianborn and their work to develop and build the pacemaker was conducted at the Toronto General Hospital. INSTANT MASHED POTATOES: Edward Anton Maria Asselbergs, a Dutch-Canadian food chemist, is famous for inventing the modern process of producing instant mashed potato flakes. He was raised in the Netherlands where he received his undergraduate degree, but fled to Canada with his family during the Second World War. CAULKING GUN: Canadian Theodore Witt is credited with inventing the caulking gun, a tool that has helped many do-ityourselfer and pro alike. In 1894, he adapted a cake decorator for the purpose. SNOWBLOWER: Arthur Sicard borrowed an idea from a couple of other Canadians who patented a “Railway Screw Snow Excavator” to come up with the first practical snowblower. In 1925, he completed his first prototype, based on a concept he described in 1894.

Kawartha Land Trust (KLT) celebrated a new partnership with Trent-Severn Waterway/ Parks Canada (TSW) and the Municipality of Trent Lakes with the grand opening of a 7.5 km trail network at the John Earle Chase Memorial Park, near Gannon’s Narrows. The John Earle Chase Memorial Park is a 400-acre site that was farmed by successive members of the Chase family. Ralph and Evelyn Chase, the last two family members who lived on the property, donated the land to TSW in 1995. Although the property was donated nearly 20 years ago, managing a conservation site such as this is beyond the core mandate of TSW and as a result of not having the resources to manage this property, a number of challenges, running contrary to the intent of the donation have occurred. Some of the issues include illegal dumping, tree cutting, vandalism and abuse to the conservation features of the property. As well, the conservation and recreational values of the site are far from being maximized. Experts have identified 12 Species-at-Risk on this property. For more information about KLT upcoming events, property profiles, trail maps, donation options or volunteer opportunities, visit www. kawarthalandtrust.org.

Sharing our moments and memories

The City of Kawartha Lakes has recently launched a local stories competition, “Kawartha Lakes Moments and Memories”. The competition will be open until Monday, October 15. All members of the community are invited to share stories about life in Kawartha Lakes and the history of our communities. The competition is being run to contribute to the Kawartha Lakes Stories Map, an interactive online map that documents the history and experiences of our residents and communities. The stories are an expression of intangible culture, and mapping these stories enables us to preserve memories of the past and share the traditions and activities that are unique to Kawartha Lakes. Each story submission will receive an entry into a random ballot draw for a prize donated by local Kawartha Lakes businesses. Draws will be held each month beginning in June. Prizes include: • Two tickets to “Broadsway” on July 7, 2018: Provided by the Academy Theatre • Two tickets to “Like Father, Like Son” running July 24 to August 4, 2018: Provided by Globus Theatre • $50 gift card to Kawartha Dairy: Provided by Kawartha Dairy • $60 gift certificate for On the Locks : Provided by On the Locks • Voucher for two tickets to “The Little Mermaid” running in November, 2018: Provided by the Academy Theatre Submissions to the contest can be entered by Norma Long - Manager/Broker 705-738-2327 (bus) 1-800-818-4870 (toll free) 24 Hour Pager 705-738-5478 (fax) 89 Bolton Street, Bobcaygeon

BAD NEWS/GOOD NEWS Lessons from Ms. Lerpiniere

Many moons ago, when I was in high school, my favourite class was a law class. The teacher, Ms. Lerpiniere, taught us a lot but one thing that stands out for me is our in-class debates. Learning the art of debating is an important life skill in my opinion. Debating provides practice in developing logical and sound arguments in a respectful way. The research you do should expand your mind and increase your understanding of important issues. Ms. Lerpiniere made debating fun! It was enjoyable to research an issue and then develop constructive ways of getting your point across. Then there was the challenge of swaying the other person to your way of thinking. There was never any name-calling, swearing or demeaning the other person’s point of view. It was all about making your own case in a respectful and convincing way and then listening while the other side did the same. The recent news reports of families being separated at the U.S. border seems to have pushed an already heated debate on immigration to a new level. I recently posted a story on Kawartha 411 about a protest against the separations planned in Lindsay. It immediately drew rude, condescending and uneducated comments. One person quickly stated they were “unfollowing” my page on Facebook. Another used the word “retarded” to reference anyone who had a differing opinion. Number one, when a news outlet writes a story

Did You Know ?

By Pamela VanMeer, Kawartha411 about something, that doesn’t mean they support it and it doesn’t mean they don’t support it. They are reporting the issue to you, the public, so that you can decide if you personally support the topic or not. Number two, blurting out ignorant comments, with a narrow-minded approach will never allow you to have an open mind or to possibly see things in another light. You don’t have to agree with someone to respect their opinion. Respect is the key word here. The good news is you can disagree with someone and still remain respectful and professional. And you can do that by taking a few lessons from Ms. Lerpiniere. Research your topic (from credible news sources), take the time to form a sound and logical argument, and then present it in a respectful way. In the end you may have to agree to disagree, but that’s okay! I feel all students should take a debate class. Learning the art of debate can teach the art of persuasion, something that is not accomplished with rude, angry comments. Some studies have also shown that participation in debate can increases students’ academic performance and increases their chances of earning a post secondary education. Many adults could also benefit from a debate class.

June 28 to July 11

Melodie McCullough

Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) Summer: the perfect time to discover the beauty of nature or renew your love for it. It’s soooooo healthy, Aquarius, for the mind, soul and body! Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) “If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.”: Lao Tzu. That’s correct, Pisces. Every so often we need take a good look around and decide if we want to continue “where we are heading” or make a change. It’s your choice! Aries (March 21 to April 20) Problem-solving - when we constantly feel the need to solve every little conundrum that sails into our day -- is energy-sucking, Aries! Learn to relax and recognize that not every problem has to demand your attention 24/7. Taurus (April 21 to May 20) You may be tempted to take the ones you love for granted, Taurus. The “ordinary” people we share our day-to-day lives with can sometimes seem boring. Don’t let this happen! They are precious. Hold them tight. Gemini (May 21 to June 22) Unexpected news may intrude on your calm life, Gemini, causing you to take some unexpected travel. While you may not have wished this to happen at this point in time, it is still possible to enjoy this brief journey. Cancer (June 23 to July 23) As so often happens, minor health concerns can turn into major complaints if not given the proper attention. Cancer make sure you take good care of yourself over the next few weeks!

Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) We aren’t saying this could be the love of your lifetime; we aren’t saying it will be a flash affair. We ARE saying that love is in air for you this summer, Leo, so . . . go for it!!! Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) You don’t have to be a celebrity or VIP to feel good about yourself and your achievements, Virgo. Know what makes you happy. Know what you are skilled at. And then get excited and enthusiastic, because YOU and your accomplishments are just as vital and important as anyone else’s. Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) Competition isn’t good for the soul, Libra. It may, at times, force us to perform better or strive harder. But what are we striving for? To beat the other person, not ourselves. Recognize that someone else’s success does not mean failure for you; and your success does not make the other person a loser. Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) The “business” side of your life will take prominence during this coming phase, Scorpio, so make sure you have good advice and then follow through. Don’t dilly-dally! Make the tough decisions! Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) “The most valuable thing we can do for the psyche, occasionally, is to let it rest, wander, live in the changing light of room, not try to be or do anything whatever.”: May Sarton. ‘Nuff said, Sag! Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) Your life has taken a side step you weren’t expecting - and how do you like it? Change is often welcome and needed, so enjoy this little escape, dear Capricorn. It may not last, but that’s okay, too. Enjoy your “time-out”.

Health & Wellness Stop Looking Over your Shoulder

By Jennifer Bacon

The average yogi is aging. They are turning to yoga for the mind-related benefits the practice brings: reduced anxiety, lower stress levels and better sleep, to name a few. When you step onto your mat, it is important to remember that every body is different and yoga poses will look different on every body. While it is natural to glance over at the person next to you to see if you are doing a pose right, comparing your version of a pose to the one next to you can damage your body as well as your pride. The muscular constraints and skeletal limitations you carry with you will determine how your body will move in and out of poses during yoga. Old, young, heavy, frail, recovering from illness or injury, everyone will interpret a pose differently. The key is to remember that developing your yoga practice means listening to your body and finding peace with your physical limitations. We are all built slightly differently when it comes to our bones and these differences determine how we move our bodies. It may be physically impossible to bend your body a certain way. And when certain muscles that are key to perform a pose are too weak or too tight, neighbouring joints and muscles are called

on to pick up the slack to get you into the pose — potentially in unsafe ways. Yoga is about being aware and present in the moment. To really practice yoga is to be fully accepting of where you are, body size, ability, restrictions, and all. Your body and your journey are unique to you, and using a block, strap or even a chair to get into a pose may be right for your body. Stop looking over your shoulder and start focusing on the only body that matters right now: yours. A life REMEMBERED

Submitted by Heather Coulter

Deanne Rossiter did not live a long life, but it was full life, in which she played many important roles, including loving wife and mother. She was also a Case Management Therapist in the Ross Memorial Hospital’s Community Counselling program for 14 years. In this role, Deanne provided care and comfort to clients struggling with various life challenges. Through her own struggles with cancer, she spent seven weeks in the Palliative Care Unit at the Ross Memorial. It was during this time that she spoke to her family about wanting to do something that would continue to help patients and comfort families at the Hospital. After considering their own experiences in the Hospital, Deanne, her husband, Pat, and her daughter, Robyn, offered to purchase an ice and water dispenser to be located in the Family Kitchen on the Palliative Care Unit. Today, the ice and water dispenser is installed and features a plaque that reads: In Memory of Deanne Rossiter—With Love from Patrick, Robyn & Family. The patients and family members who use the new ice and water dispenser may not have known Deanne, but they’ll appreciate the kindness of the gesture and the comfort during difficult times. It’s the kind of caring Deanne delivered every day at the Ross, and the legacy she’s leaving behind.

RMH AUXILIARY PRESENTS ANNUAL GIFT

Ross Memorial Hospital volunteers contribute to exceptional patient care in many ways. Throughout the Hospital, their assistance on the frontline ensures patients and families are as comfortable as possible. Behind the scenes, their combined time and talent operates the Reflections Café and Gift Shop, schedules volunteers and volunteens, and participates in community events. They also touch patient lives through their fundraising efforts.

The Ross Memorial Hospital Auxiliary (RMHA) works tirelessly throughout the year. The money they raise from proceeds in the Café and Gift Shop, through lottery and tuck cart sales, Bingo and bake sales, raffles and vendors in the lobby, grocery bagging and Tag Day, enables the Auxiliary to provide urgently needed medical equipment and capital support for the Hospital. At the Auxiliary’s Annual General Meeting on June 19, RMHA Excellence Pin recipients Irene Deli and Dennis Roy joined the Auxiliary’s Director of Fundraising Linda Danaher to present the Auxiliary’s 2017/18 gift of $150,000 to the RMH Foundation. The funds are purchasing a ventilator and other equipment needed in the Intensive Care Unit. “I encourage all volunteers at the Ross Memorial Hospital to look back at 2017/18 with pride,” said Ward Levine, Auxiliary President. “Thanks to your hard work and dedication, we’re celebrating another year of successful service to the Hospital through our involvement in patient care areas and fundraising initiatives.”

DAMAGING WORKPLACE NOISE

Not only does noise in the workplace have the potential to damage workers’ hearing, but there is evidence that workplace noise may also raise blood pressure and cholesterol levels among workers exposed to elevated noise levels. This is an important finding because hypertension and high cholesterol are listed as top risk factors for heart disease. With this in mind, workers in mining, construction, and manufacturing should be particularly diligent about having their hearing checked. Beyond that, workers found to exhibit signs of hearing loss should not only take preventive measures to reduce their exposure and treat their hearing loss, but they might also want to schedule an appointment with their physicians to assess their heart health. Safeguarding your hearing is vital no matter what your occupation or recreational pursuits. Protect your hearing from hazards of all kinds—carry soft foam ear plugs with you for when you find yourself in a situation in which the noise level is unpleasant, even hazardous to your health. And turn to the skilled experience of a Doctor of Audiology at LINDSAY EAR CLINIC for a thorough hearing examination and complete hearing healthcare services. We offer comprehensive, individualized evaluations, treatment, and management of hearing disorders. P.S. Long-term exposure to noise levels at 80-85 decibels or over can cause hearing loss. Heavy city traffic is 85 dB.

THE HEAT IS ON

Submitted by HKPR Health Unit

Be ready to beat the heat this summer so you don’t have to sweat the small stuff when extremely hot, humid weather hits home. The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit encourages people to take steps to protect themselves during extremely hot, humid weather. Heatrelated illnesses such as dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke can be very dangerous, especially for infants, older adults, and people with chronic diseases. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, headache, fainting, paleness, weakness, tiredness, dizziness, and nausea. If local residents experience heat-related illness or symptoms, they should seek medical attention. “While heat-related illnesses can take an extreme toll on many people, the good news is that is largely preventable by being smart and taking the right precautions,” says Melissa Ivey, Emergency Management Coordinator with the Health Unit. “It’s important not to overdo things when it’s extremely hot outside. Instead, drink plenty of water and seek out cool places.” During a heat wave, or anytime when temperatures become uncomfortably warm, the Health Unit advises people to: • Avoid going out in the sun or heat when possible. • Stay cool, and if possible, stay in an air-conditioned place. If your home does not have air conditioning, go to the shopping mall, library, community centre,

or friend’s house. To see if there is a cooling centre in your community, contact your local municipality. • When outdoors, stay in the shade as much as possible. If you plan to go outside during a very hot day, do so early in the morning or evening when it is cooler. • Avoid outdoor sports and physical activity. • Wear loose-fitting, light clothing and a wide brimmed hat. • Drink lots of water and natural fruit juices, even if you don’t feel very thirsty. Avoid alcohol, coffee/tea and pop. • Check in regularly with vulnerable family, friends, neighbours and others who could be affected by the heat. These include children, older adults and persons with chronic illnesses. Make sure they are OK and are well-hydrated. • Eat light, cool foods, and avoid heavy meals that involve using the oven or other hot appliances. • Keep shades, drapes and blinds closed on the sunny side of your home, but keep windows open slightly. If you do not have air conditioning, use fans. • Keep lights off or turned low. • Take a cool bath or shower periodically, or cool down with cool, wet towels. • Never leave a child or pet in a closed, parked vehicle.

BOBCAYGEON BEACH PARK – BEAUTIFUL AND CONTROVERSIAL

By Max Miller

On Thursday, June 21 the City of Kawartha Lakes presented a conceptual design for the Bobcaygeon Beach Park. The drawings and ideas were a comprehensive and attractive use of the space. The landscape architects from Landscaping Planning were knowledgeable and answered questions. They knew about the flood plains, number of trees affected, and the water flow. Many people were quite impressed. Richard Kyle was very happy to see two band

shells for outdoor music venues. He proposed naming it ‘Constellations Park’ in honour of the Tragically Hip’s Gord Downie. So far, the project is scheduled for approval by council this year and construction to begin in 2020. There was no budget presented at the meeting. There were three issues that came up: • Why was the trailer park that used to be on the site removed last year, so soon before a plan was in place? • The design for the new park includes dockage for large boats beside the Beach. There is some concern about contamination of the beach, danger to swimmers and the costs of having to maintain and supervise the area. • Why have there been no public consultations about decision to remove the trailer park and before the initial design phase to determine what the citizens wanted? Overall, the meeting was well attended. There are aspects of the design that many people like but there are still those who believe the City’s taxpayer dollars could be used for a better purpose. Residents are encouraged by the City to provide feedback on the first Master Plan draft by completing the City’s online comment form (www.kawarthalakes. ca) by Friday, July 6. After all comments have been considered, the project will move into a more detailed scoping process and costs will be brought forward.
