I read with interest last week a news story that the provincial government was going to issue a directive to all public schools for the 2019-20 school year that would ban cellphones from their classrooms.

Exceptions to the rule would be made for medical reasons, students with special needs and when teachers want to use cellphones as part of their class lessons. I, for one, applaud this directive.

Back in the olden days, when I was a mere lass, the cell phone was just an idea in someone’s futuristic brain. Push button landlines had just come into fashion and that in itself was an earthshattering innovation in our house!

There was no such thing as texting, Google, Facebook or Snapchat. In school, we would pass notes back and forth under our desks so the teacher didn’t see. (Although I once got caught and had to read a very embarrassing note out loud to the whole class!) We used Encyclopedia Britannica to do our research. We talked to one another face-fo-face or called friends after school hours. There was no urgency

to let anyone in the great wide world see what we were wearing or eating for lunch. And to top it all off, if there was an emergency, the school knew how to get in touch with my parents!

One of the most important lessons taught in school was how to listen. We had to be focused on what the teacher was saying in order to learn. You can’t listen effectively if you’re distracted, and cellphones have certainly become a huge distraction rather than a learning tool.

Cellphones have their place in our society, but I don’t believe that place includes the classroom, dinner table or movie theatre. They certainly do not belong in the hands of those behind the wheel of a vehicle!

PROVINCIAL BUDGET COMING DOWN IN APRIL

The self-professed “Government for the People” (that’s the Ontario provincial government), will deliver their first budget on April 11, 2019.

Vic Fedeli, Minister of Finance, says, “Our government’s first Budget will outline our plan to return the Province to balance in a responsible manner, and protect what matters most - preserving critical public services, including our world-class health care and education system.”

The recently released Ontario 2018-19 Third Quarter Finances forecasts an improvement of $1.5 billion in the Province’s deficit to $13.5 billion. The Third Quarter improvement is largely the result of stronger economic growth, supported by Ontario’s open for business approach to government. Balancing the budget is not just a fiscal imperative, but a moral one, Fedeli said.

“Every dollar that is spent on paying interest on debt is one less dollar going to our schools and hospitals. Unless we take action now, our children and grandchildren will have to bear an even greater burden. Balancing the budget will help us sustainably fund essential public services for current and future generations.”

The Ontario government wants to take steps to reduce litter and waste in our communities and increase and improve household recycling.

Included in the online “Environment Registry” are proposals to reduce plastic litter and waste, divert and reduce food and organic waste from households and businesses, and increase opportunities for the people of Ontario to participate in waste reduction efforts.

Avoid Getting Ripped Off

With spring rapidly approaching, many people are beginning to think about home improvements they would like to make.

In 2015, the home renovation business was a $71 billion a year enterprise, with thousands of legitimate

and hard-working contractors able to provide you with the best possible service.

In Canada last year, the 10 most common projects that had home owners hiring renovation professionals included bathroom updating, basement conversions, new decks, fencing, painting and decoration, kitchen renovations, tiling, flooring, roofing, and new windows and doors.

In Ontario, bathroom renovations lead the way with home owners typically spending at least $25,000 on the work being done.

The only problem with home renovations is avoiding the scammers and crooks that live on the fringes of this multi-billion dollar industry.

The Better Business Bureau reports that they receive more complaints about shady contractors than any other line of work they compile statistics on.

Last spring, a “contractor” went door-to-door where our cottage is located soliciting business. He was very professional, and his prices seemed in line with others in Haliburton. The key difference was he was available for work immediately, and homeowners found that very attractive. He made his pitch, collected dozens of down payments of typically 25 percent, and was never seen again. Rumours abound on the lake how much he took in total, but informed speculation has put it at more than six figures, all of it in cash.

2. Ask the contractor for references and actually call them. Do not trust what you see on their websites or Kijiji advertisements – much of that can easily be lifted from the webpages of far more reputable home renovators.

Google the company name. If there have been complaints they will be somewhere. If there is nothing on the internet, your spider senses should be tingling.

4. Get a minimum of three written quotes.

5. Get everything in writing because verbal promises mean little if you have to sue your former contractor in Small Claims Court.

6.

Verify that the contractor is licensed and has appropriate insurance. If one of his workers has a “slip and fall” on your jobsite and the renovator has no insurance you could be on the hook for millions of dollars in injury claims.

7. After hiring your contractor, confirm that the contractor has filed his/your plans with the township and a building permit has been issued.

The homeowner is ultimately responsible for the permit, not the contractor.

8. Discuss, and get in writing, warranty coverage.

Beware of contractors who offer none.

9. Arrange a payment schedule ahead of time. Never put more than 10 percent down. Do not pay in cash. Pay by cheque only if the cheque is being made out to a company. The safest way to pay is via credit card where the banks can be your best friends in tracing an erst-while contractor who

suddenly disappears and stops answering his phone.

10. Get a receipt when the job is done marked plainly “Paid in Full”.

11. Keep your contract on file just in case it is needed for warranty work later.

A final point that has served me well is courtesy of my Dad. He said time and time again, “Never hire a contractor who won’t put his name on his truck. He is likely a crook.” In my experience, he has been right more than he has been wrong with this bit of wisdom.

We spoke with Kent Leckie of Re/Max Allstars Realty in Bobcaygeon to find out what potential homebuyers are looking for.

“It’s important to put yourself in the potential buyer’s shoes,” he says. “The closer you can get your home to looking like a magazine photo, the better.”

Health & Wellness CITY GAINS MEDICAL ADVANTAGE

Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) has helped bring a prestigious program to the City of Kawartha Lakes.

In conjunction with Ross Memorial Hospital (RMH), City of Kawartha Lakes family doctors and the Rural Ontario Medical Program (ROMP), the City of Kawartha Lakes (CKL) has been approved as a University of Toronto (UofT) Family Medicine Clerkship training site.

Training to become a doctor includes four years of medical school, prior to completing a specialty residency. The third and fourth years of medical school are known as ‘clerkship’. During these years, 5 to 6 weeks of training in many specialties, including family medicine, are completed by the students. In October

While previous studies have linked pain-relieving medications with hearing loss in men, more recent research also points to over-the-counter pain relievers as a cause of hearing loss in women. According to a new analysis from the Nurses’ Health Study, women who took “non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs” (NSAIDs and ibuprofen, in particular) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) more than two days a week for at least six years had a ten percent increased risk of hearing loss.

The good news is that hearing loss usually improves when these medications are stopped. Consult with your physician if you experience hearing problems.

Yvonne Brecht (nee Faulkner ) of Coboconk, Ontario at age 82 (1936-2019)

Passed gently into the arms of Jesus on Monday, March 4, 2019 with her family by her side.

Yvonne was the loving wife and best friend of Fred Brecht for over 59 years, as well as being the beloved mother of Jana (Rob) and Karl (Laura). Family was most important to Yvonne and she was a wonderful Nana to Jared (Beth), Matthew, Madison, Joshua, Chelsea and Sarah. Dear sister of Lloyd (Joyce), Lorna (Normdeceased), John (Gwen-deceased), and David (Marydeceased, ). Also lovingly remembered by her many nieces, nephews and friends.

Yvonne’s heart was most full when family was together and laughs were being shared. She loved people and never met a stranger.

As per Yvonne’s wishes a private cremation has occurred and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

THE CHEMONG PORTAGE

What we know today as the ‘Chemong Portage’, is the portage from the south end of Chemong Lake all the way to Peterborough.

It was created to cut off the long arduous trip from the top end of Buckhorn Lake, to Lower Buckhorn Lake, to Lovesick Lake, to Stoney Lake, and then down south full of rapids. It was time consuming. So the Chemong Portage cut off quite a bit of time.

Now, according to the stories I know, the Chemong Portage has been around a long, long time. It had a major role to play in early times when our people lived in this area, as far back as glaciation. The area here was prime hunting grounds for us. There were quite a number of animals, that don’t exist today, that we depended on. I am thinking now of ATIK (Woodland Caribou) who existed around the area. In fact, that was/is one of our main clans in our clan system that defines the way we relate to each other in terms of governance.

So this portage, even up to this day, has had a lot of influence because over time the Chemong Portage has become the heavily used Chemong Road. It originally left Peterborough, at the base of the rapids which we

called NOGOJIWANONG. We figure that to be around the King Street area. And the reason for this is Jackson Creek would have come out just south of that, so you had to portage just north of Jackson Creek so you wouldn’t have to cross it to get to Chemong Lake.

So somewhere in there that’s where you got off to get on the portage – for practical reasons.

Then you started out. And remember, in portages, you try and go as straight as you can. The problem with the Chemong Portage is you have to cross the Parkhill drumlin – ISHPADINAA (the high hill) – and yet our people did. I doubt they would have crossed it right over the top. My guess would be that they crossed to the west of it, around the hill, between Jackson Creek and the hill, and then continued on straight to Chemong Road.

Then you would end up at Chemong Lake which is about 8 to 10 kilometres away.

My own forebears used that portage. My great grandfather, five generations away, married a woman from Rice Lake, so he had to use that portage regularly in order to maintain his relationship with her.

I am curious at times, so I tried to see where the portage exactly ran. One of the ways to do this is to look for ‘directional trees’ – where the old people would break a small sapling that would point the way.

But some of these trees, even though they’re broken, continued to grow to become big trees. And I thought I would look around Chemong Road to see if there were any of those trees left. Lo and behold I found one, by a fence line beside the road about half way between the lake and Peterborough.

One can also find other signs – modern society build their roads on these portages because they are well used and well packed. They became good wagon trails and then wagon trails developed into gravel roads and gravel roads developed into paved roads.

Some of the longest, straightest roads in the world, like Yonge Street, are on top of ancient trails once used by my ancestors…but that is another story.

CHORISTERS’ CORNER

The Choristers are pleased to see Ron Needs back at practice and to hear that Graham Keevill is now home recovering. Hopefully he will be back before too long. Thankfully we have three new bass voices to help with the absentees.

Our accompanist, Vivian Hetherington has been undergoing cataract surgery and has been unable to

play for us. As soon as she is able to see 100 percent she will be back. We wish her well and are very grateful to Ruth Eberts for filling in for her.

Practices have been Sectional for the last few weeks. Sopranos and Altos only one week and the following Tuesday for the Tenors and Basses. With a few new numbers to learn these practices are very helpful for us all.

The Choristers are still hoping to perform a Spring concert and as soon as we know when we will let you know…both here and on Facebook.

Take, care, keep warm and think Spring which is just down the road.

CELEBRATE EARTH HOUR

On Saturday, March 30, for one hour between 8:30 and 9:30pm, we will be in the dark. That’s the hope of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

Earth Hour is a worldwide movement held annually that encourages individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights for one hour as a symbol of commitment to the planet.
