When I was growing up, we didn’t have a lot of money. Mom worked as a nurse in a senior’s home and Dad did whatever he could, but money was tight. My mom was a terrific grocery shopper and, let’s face it, food was a lot less expensive in those days. We never had to use a food bank ... I don’t even know if there was one in our community.

Today, though, through the generosity of volunteers and the communities throughout the country, most people know about food banks and the importance they play in today’s society.

On our cover this issue is a group of volunteers from the Bobcaygeon Helps Food Bank. This terrific organization helps 71 clients every month, handing out 368 bags of food. They also participate in the Breakfast Program at Bobcaygeon Public School.

I spoke with Laura Fisher of the Bobcaygeon Helps Food Bank about the need that continues all year long. After the Christmas drive, Laura tells me that the amount of donations drops off and, at

this time of year, there are still many who rely on the program. They are one of the last independent food banks in Ontario, meaning that 100 percent of cash and food donations stay in this community.

I’m sure that the Bobcaygeon Helps Food Bank isn’t alone in its need for food and cash donations. Every community has a similar organization.

In Bobcaygeon, there are bins near the entrance of the grocery stores or you can drop off your fresh and canned/ boxed food donations at Christ Anglican Church on Wednesdays between 9:30 and 11am.

MARG MCLEAN, A LIFE WELL LIVED

A very special lady has left Bobcaygeon with a hole that will be difficult to fill. Marg McLean, in her 91st year, has moved onto a new volunteer mission and I am sure she will be looking down making sure we carry on her good work.

During her time in Bobcaygeon, Marg became a volunteer at the Bobcaygeon Legion, where she was President of the Ladies Auxiliary and Zone Commander for 20 years. She helped organize youth essays/speeches, poppy teas and Remembrance Day services. She was also a very active member of the Kinettes and the Cancer Society. In 1982, Marg was named Citizen of the Year by the Bobcaygeon & Area Chamber of Commerce.

After her husband Leo passed away, a group of widows affectionately known as “The Golden Girls” helped to fill the void for each other. This group of about six friends were very close and would have fun while giving back to their community.

Thirty years ago, Reeve Frank Poole asked Marg to head up Canada Day Celebrations and she never looked back. Bobcaygeon Canada Day has become one of the best events in the area.

Marg was always so heartened to see the streets of Bobcaygeon teeming with young and old celebrating Canada’s birthday. From the kid’s events in the morning, horseshoes, the cake cutting (with her hubby’s sword), the musical entertainment, the parade, the Legion BBQ and the incredible fireworks, Canada Day in Bobcaygeon is always a great time.

I had the honour of accompanying Marg on many of the Canada Day events over the years and it was especially nice to join her for the 150th Celebrations last summer. Even though she had many maladies to

overcome, she was bound and determined to make it to the 150th. Although the weather wasn’t the best, it seemed like the whole village turned out for the event.

Marg was beaming!

Last Fall, her children Jamie, Margaret Anne and grandchildren Nicholas, Courtney and Emily threw her a wonderful outdoor 90th birthday celebration that was attended by many people from far and wide. She was so thrilled.

Marg, you showed us how to make our community shine with your big smile, your strength of spirit and positive attitude. You will be missed my friend.

Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) is asking the community to help celebrate the ninth annual Family Doctor Appreciation Week, being held June 4 to 8. The week will honour the many wonderful family doctors practicing in the City of Kawartha Lakes.

KLHCI is holding a children’s poster and letter writing contest to promote Family Doctor Appreciation Week. Students in Grades K to 6 are encouraged to draw a picture or write a letter to their family doctor.

The Two Sides of Opioids

There’s no denying it, there’s an opioid crisis all across the country, including right here in the City of Kawartha Lakes.

A study published by the Ontario Drug Policy Research Network suggests that almost one in five people living in the Kawarthas and Peterborough area were given opioids for pain management in 2016. That works out to be 17 percent, well above the provincial average of 11.9 percent.

Opioids are a class of medication used to treat severe pain. They bind to the receptors in the brain and spinal cord, disrupting pain signals. The problem is they also reward areas of the brain by releasing a feel-good hormone, creating a feeling of euphoria. For years they were marketed as a wonder drug of sorts, that could treat pain without being addictive. However, years later, after thousands of people became users, the drugs were found to be highly addictive.

Medical officials in the City of Kawartha Lakes say there’s an average of one drug overdose per day in the City.

Peterborough ranks highest in the province in the use of methadone, a drug used to treat addiction to opioids.

In response to the crisis, Peterborough recently announced they would be opening a safe drug injection site. It’s a place where people who are addicted can go to use illegal drugs without fear of being charged.

On June 9, 2017, 21-year-old ​Keagen Carson-Schiberras died of an opioid overdose. Keagan grew up in Lakefield. We aren’t immune because we live in a small town.

The good news is that these drugs, when legitimately prescribed and monitored, are helping many people live with severe pain.

“I just got so tired of hearing all the bad things about these drugs and it’s not everyone who is getting them off the street,” a City of Kawartha Lakes resident told me. “I thought somebody had to say something.” The woman was legitimately prescribed opioids for severe pain from scoliosis, stenosis and sciatica. She says, “I couldn’t live without them, I’d be in so much pain I would go nuts.”

The 75-year-old says she wants people to know that not everyone who takes opioids fits the stereotype you often hear about. “Not everybody who is on them is an addict on the street looking for drugs.”

With all of the media surrounding the negative effects of opioids, it’s easy to see how the positives can get lost in the chaos.

When used properly, opioids such as morphine, oxycodone and fentanyl have been known to help the severe pain and can alleviate the suffering of people with advanced disease.

Doctors are now mandated to reduce the number of prescriptions for opioids in an effort to get the cri–sis under control. For those who use the drugs to legitimately manage pain, it’s a move that impacts their way of life.

Hopefully, we are on our way to striking a healthy balance between measures that help keep people from becoming addicted, while relieving the pain and suffering of those who really need it.

Parents of children with intellectual or other significant disabilities need to provide an exceptional level of ongoing support. That support happens not only during childhood, but throughout adulthood as well.

Janet Klees is an internationally known author and speaker who has worked with families in Durham Region for 30 years. She believes there are creative solutions for families, when housing is seen as a community issue, and when busy families share ideas and experiences about their family member’s unique needs, interests and aspirations.

At the invitation of Fenelon Forward and a new local initiative called ABLE (Access to Better Living Experiences), Ms. Klees will share her insights in Fenelon Falls, at St. James Anglican Church on April 4 at 7pm. She will give participants an opportunity to consider new possibilities with the support of others in similar situations.

In nearby Durham, families come together on a regular basis to share their experiences and find solutions among themselves or from what might be happening elsewhere. “What are we hearing about innovative or good ways that people are securing housing every day? What are some ideas that people have around the patterns of support where their sons and daughters would live well? And what do we know is happening on the social housing front in the broader community?” Such discussions have put several families well on the road to solutions tailored to their family’s needs and resources.

Canadian author, John Boyko, will speak on the subject of ‘Sir John A. Macdonald: The Case for a Strong Canada’. The meeting takes place at 10am in the Masonic Hall, 10 Ridout Street in Lindsay.

Probus Clubs are non-profit, non-sectarian and nonfundraising, and exist to provide social opportunities, great fellowship, quality guest speakers on topical subjects, and club outings, for retired and semi-retired folk. In Lindsay the men’s club meets separately from the women’s club.

UNPLUG FOR THE PLANET

We hear a lot about our disintigrating ozone layer, climate change, global warming, environmental disasters, major weather shifts and on and on. And, in the large scheme of things, many of us wonder how what we do – recycling, reducing our garbage output, walking more and driving less – has an impact on those forces of ever-changing environment.

On Saturday, March 24 from 8:30 to 9:30pm, we can make a difference. It’s Earth Hour – when “regular” people are encouraged to shut off lights, electronics and other energy-suckers for just one hour.

It started in 2007 as a symbolic “lights out” event in Sydney, Australia. It is now the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment, during which millions take action for our planet and nature.

In 2017, 187 countries and territories participated in Earth Hour with millions of people showing their support. In fact, more than 12,000 landmarks and monuments switched off their lights!

This year, take the hour on March 24 to join in with others and think about changes you can make to help keep our Earth healthy for us, and future generations.

CRUISEFEST COMING BACK

The Bobcaygeon & District Chamber of Commerce is continuing their 22-year tradition of the Bobcaygeon Cruisefest, held annually on September 15 at the Bobcaygeon Fairgrounds.

“This one-day exhibition of antique and classic cars and trucks brings hundreds of visitors to the area,” says Miriam Newton, President of the Chamber. “We’ve gone into this year’s event with the same enthusiasm as we have for the past 22 years.”

Newton also says, “There is some confusion because a similar event is taking place on the same day, but it is not the Chamber-organized and sanctioned event.”

The Choristers were saddened last week to learn of the passing of Vic Dunleavey. Our condolences are sent to his wife Barb and family. Barb and Vic were two of the original Choristers along with George Hedge as Director. Unfortunately, when the time came, they both had to take a bow due to health problems. I believe that the choir was Barb’s dream that came to fruition.

Once again practice last night was moved to Trinity Church. The Retirement Suites were quarantined for the second time this year. It was a snowy night and we hope everyone arrived home safely. There are no further developments on the May concert except I believe that you will be introduced to a Male Quartet, but more about that to come.

There is not much to share this week, other than a couple of birthdays to celebrate vocally. Hopefully the weather will improve and Spring bulbs will start to bloom.

Looking for a great way to keep your kids busy this summer, in a fun, interactive and educational way? Registration for Kawartha Conservation’s 2018 summer camps is now open.

One-day Nature Camps for Kids are back, offering children ages 4 (must turn 4 by July 1) to 6, different themed days and hands-on, structured outdoor learning in a fun, safe and nurturing environment.

Activities include guided hikes, arts and crafts, exploring nature, learning about wildlife, playing games and much more.

For young people aged 6 to 10, the one-week Nature Explorer Summer Camp offers fun, interactive and educational programming with six weeks of camps available in July and August. New for 2018, there are also multi-day, multi-week and sibling discounts available.

an eligible dependant amount of $11,635 (which is the same as the spouse or common-law partner amount for couples). The amount is reduced by any income your child earns.

• You may claim a non-refundable tax credit for expenses relating to the adoption of a child. For 2017, the maximum amount of expenses on which the credit is based is $15,670. You claim all your expenses in the year the adoption is finalized.

CAREGIVERS • If you are supporting an infirm dependant who is 18 or over and infirm, you may be able to claim the Canada caregiver amount. For 2017, the maximum claim is $6,883. It is reduced by your dependant’s net income in excess of $16,163.

• You may also claim the Canada caregiver amount for children under 18 at the end of the year who have an impairment in physical or mental functions. The child must be dependent on others for assistance in attending to personal needs and care when compared to children of the same age. For 2017, the amount is $2,150.

SENIORS • Seniors who turn 65 can postpone receiving Old Age Security benefits for up to five years and receive higher annual benefits when they do start collecting.

This would probably be beneficial to seniors whose net income is more than $75,910 in 2018 since they will not be subject to the OAS clawback.

SBA Canada is proposing an antenna system at 2876 Highway #121 in the City of Kawartha Lakes, Ontario which consists of a 75 metre guyed wire telecommunications tower with a lightning road at the top with a compound to house the tower and the necessary equipment to be secured by chain link fencing. Access to the proposed tower will be provided through a 6.0 metre wide utility easement from Highway #121 to the tower compound.

The tower compound will be setback approximately 360 metres from the road and 15 metres from the property line. Once completed the monopole structure and antenna system will measure 75 metres in height.

Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada is responsible for the approval of this antenna system, and requires SBA Canada to review this proposal with the public and local municipality. After reviewing this proposal the City of Ottawa will provide its position to Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada and SBA Canada.

time to check out what your home has endured over the winter months and come up with a plan to make things right.

Let’s start with your initial inspection of the exterior. Grab a clipboard, some paper and a pen to make notes of what you see on a walk around the outside of the house. Look for signs of loose or broken shingles on the roof and check the gutters to make sure they’re doing their job. Also, look up at the chimney for signs of wear and broken bricks. Take a close look at the seals around your windows and doors and for any signs of water damage. And don’t forget the foundation, making specific notes about the status of the grade near your house.

Don’t forget to look at the siding, focusing on the north side of the house where often issues are first to show up. If you have a painted wood exterior, look for peeling paint, mould and even feel to see if the wood is soft. If you have brick or stucco, look for stains, cracks, or crumbling.

Now is the time to give your deck a good inspection, looking for signs of cracked wood, loose nails and screws that may now be peaking above the board.

If your property has any trees, look up and look for obvious signs of damage, dead limbs or dangling branches.

Window rebates of up to $5,000?

That sounds too good to be true!

“That’s a typical reaction we get from those who hear about the new Green Ontario Fund rebate program for the first time, and with good reason”, says Wayne McNelly, General Manager of Nortech Windows.

“This government fund goes far beyond any previous renovation programs offering rebates for windows by offering substantially more money to homeowners.”

The mandate of the “GreenON” fund is to reduce greenhouse gases by offering incentive programs to encourage homeowners to increase the energy efficiency of their homes.

“This is very good news for anyone considering an upgrade to their windows at this time,” says Wayne.

The plan is very simple. The fund provides $500.00 per window opening up to a maximum of $5000.00. Earlier programs only offered $80.00 per opening.

Homeowners need to meet only a few conditions to be eligible for the rebate, according to Wayne.

The replacement windows must be included on the Energy Star Most Efficient 2018 List. These high-performance windows feature very low heat transfer and are rated for Zone 3, which covers all of Canada.

Homeowners must be replacing an existing window, including the full frame. The opening must be insulated back to the wall studs for better efficiency.

The windows that are being replaced must be part of an existing structure. New construction is not included in this program.

The windows must be installed by a contractor registered in the program who holds a Window Wise Certification and is a member of the Siding and Window Dealers Association of Canada, which sets training, quality, financial and ethical standards and audits for its members.

“That’s basically it,” says Wayne. “Very simple.

The contractor submits the required paperwork to the government on behalf of the homeowner.”

“The high performance windows will cost a little more, however, the cost is usually more than offset by the rebates. It’s our experience at Nortech that people are paying thousands of dollars less for the higher efficiency windows than they would have paid for regular dual-pane windows without the program.”

An added bonus is that participants will continue to save more on energy costs year after year as well, says Wayne.

“It seems to me to be a win-win situation. Its better for the environment, and it’s better for the pocketbook.”

Wayne does have a word of caution.

“The program is slated to be around for 2018 and 2019. However, the funds are limited, so when they run out, it will be over.”

“People are signing up even in the middle of winter,” says Wayne. “I think it’s going to be a very busy year. Now it’s time to head inside and let’s start with the obvious – walls and ceilings. Go room by room, and look carefully for problems. Mostly, watch for discolouration. Yellow spots indicate water damage.

Large ones on the ceiling point to a leaky roof, or if they’re next to exterior walls, ice dams. Small water spots are probably leaking or sweating plumbing pipes.

Once you’ve called in a specialist, work with him or her to determine what’s the best way to solve any problems. Some will be easy fixes, others may be more serious and require a considerable amount of work.

BIG CHANGES AT HOME

When it became clear to us recently that my husband, John, was going to require a wheelchair to get around the house, I have to say that I was overwhelmed with the “new reality” of what our home was going to look like. As a service to those who may have to go through this, here’s what I learned: Ramps

We had our deck boards replaced two years ago.

At that time, I asked our contractor to build ramps to our sliding back door and the side door (which we use as our front door). He took a piece of plywood and screwed it on an angle to the sill of the sliding door. He built a small platform to bring the level of the deck up to the side door threshold, then added another plywood ramp. Since, at the time, John was able to walk around, he found the ramps set him off balance, so we took them out.

As his balance got worse, and he was using a walker, I had a platform built to meet the threshold at the sliding door, to enable him more space to move around before “hitting the deck.” But with a wheelchair, a ramp was needed to get up to the platform. Luckily, I have a good friend who had a portable set of ramps that I’ve been able to use from the platform to the deck.

Bathroom Not many people think about this, but how big is your bathroom? Watching the home improvement shows, we see these enormous caverns where you could have a party. Large glass and tile showers, clawfoot bathtubs, a separate room for the commode and, yes, dual sinks and plenty of counter space. Not in my house!

When we bought the house, what did we know from bathrooms? It’s a shower/ablution room. Ours was tiny by comparison with the home improvement shows -- six-foot-wide by 10-feet long space, filled with a 4-foot vanity, tub and toilet. Originally, again because of John’s mobility issues, we replaced the tub with a shower stall to make it easier for him to get in and out.

When it became apparent we would need to make room for wheelchair access, out came the vanity (replaced with a much smaller version where a wheelchair could fit under the sink). That came with some storage issues, but that’s what those handy IKEA bookcases are for, right? Oh, and the medicine cabinet had to be replaced because of the height restrictions between the mirror and the new sink. A flat mirror worked wonders.

I’m sure the last thing the builder of our home considered was the possibility of future wheelchair access through the bathroom door. Little did I know that the “standard” width of a bathroom door was only 24 inches. A “standard” wheelchair is 28 inches. You do the math!

So we had to widen the bathroom entrance, too.

Not a problem, I thought. There’s plenty of space if we just take off the old door. Nope ... let’s remove the door trim, that should work. Nope ... a friend came over, removed some of the drywall (and yes, I still have a few gaping holes to fill), took the frame back to the studs, reinforced the header and, lo and behold ... a new entrance to the bathroom. Ah yes, but this should be a private room, right? Any traditional door would reduce the width of the entrance, so that wasn’t an option.

Instead, there is a beautiful barn door setup that fills the need for privacy, but still looks elegant.

Ramp or Lift I thought it would be relatively easy to have a ramp built from the “driveway” at the side of our house to the deck that sits about three feet off the ground to our side door. Wrong, again. Here’s what I learned about ramps for accessibility.

You need to have one foot of length for every inch in height. So, since my deck was three feet off the ground, I would need a 36-foot ramp. Because of the length, it couldn’t be straight, there would have to be a few turns and “rests”. Gardens would have to be moved and, quite frankly, the company rep said it would be more hassle and money than it was worth.

We decided on a wheelchair lift instead. After pouring a cement pad to serve as the bottom base

of the lift, removing a section of my two-year-old beautiful railing, and a pricetag somewhere between a great vacation on a beach and a used car, the lift was installed. No, it doesn’t come with a cover to keep the snow out of it so I improvised a lovely tarp enclosure for it that has served me well this winter. But it does make it easy for John to get in and out when we need to, so it’s well worth it.

That’s just a few changes we’ve made to our home.

The best thing is to get the experts to help you figure it all out. Another thing I’ve learned is to think about the long-term needs when you’re buying a house.

On Saturday, March 10, Progressive Conservatives from all over Ontario gathered at the Markham Convention Centre to see the coronation of a new leader.

Most political pundits expected a neck-and-neck race between Christine Elliott and Doug Ford.

The PCs were so sure that their fully automated election process would be without problems that they only booked the hall until 7pm. Tory organizers told the assembled media that after the opening addresses

by Party luminaries and special guests a leader would be announced by 3:30 that afternoon.

With the province watching, the Conservative convention turned into a spectacle never seen in modern Ontario history. It was clear that something was very wrong by 4pm, and rumours began to circulate of ballots wrongly tabulated, an extremely close vote with Elliot and Ford separated by one-half of one percent in support, a recount ordered and lawyers arriving at the hall to adjudicate this unexpected turn of events.

By 7pm, Tory executives finally took to the stage before a half-empty hall and announced that everyone needed to go home, and that results would be announced in a timely manner. There would be no balloon drop, no concession speeches, no calls for public unity, and no shiny sound bite for the late evening news. This kind of public relations debacle was unprecedented in recent political memory.

At 10:30 that evening, the Party proclaimed Doug Ford their leader, despite the fact that Christine Elliot was challenging the process, suggesting there had been “serious irregularities”. Elliot did not publicly concede until late the next day, after a meeting with the Ford camp.

With Doug Ford as leader, the provincial Conservatives have completely and totally rejected the centrist legacy of previous leader Patrick Brown, who hoped for electoral success by moving into the moderate middle in Ontario politics once dominated

by Conservative icons Leslie Frost, John Robarts and Bill Davis.

Doug Ford is a smarter, better-scripted and more disciplined version of his mercurial late brother Rob, whose reign of error in Toronto as Mayor made the city late night comedic fodder across North America.

Doug Ford, unlike his brother, is a hard-wired social Conservative who opposes abortion, promises to scrap the new sexual education curriculum that the Wynne government rolled out two years ago, is indifferent to LGBTQ issues, and promises to remove what he has called the Wynne “nanny state”.

Fiscally, Doug follows the Rob Ford playbook; government waste is endemic, there are too many workers on the government payroll, taxes are too high, and regulation is strangling small business in Ontario.

When pushed on the leadership trail about plans for health and education policy whose costs consume well over half the provincial budget, Ford had no specific plans, a worrying trend to be sure.

Doug Ford should not be taken lightly by either the Liberals or the NDP. He is a formidable political campaigner and skilled fundraiser. He is also very charming, in a Don Cherry kind of way. Politics right across the democratic west is in an ugly mood, with many calling for change for change sake. Ford could benefit from that, and there is no reason to be surprised if Ontarians wake up June 8 with a Premier Ford.

ASHMORE WANTS TO RUN AGAIN

Ward 14 Councillor, Ron Ashmore, has announced his potential candidacy for councillor for the new Ward 6 in Kawartha Lakes.

He says the key areas of his platform will be customer service, bringing people back to the City of Kawartha Lakes, providing incentives for business to expand or relocate in the City and controlling spending and debt levels in the municipal government.

Ron indicates that more details will be unveiled in May, once the official nomination process opens.

Fenelon Falls is going to be hopping on Saturday, March 31. It’s the annual Easter Eggstravanza from 10am to 1pm.

The Canadian Cancer Society needs your help this April and beyond. April 2018 marks the 61st year for the Cancer Society’s Daffodil Campaign and the need is greater than it has ever been.

Individuals who make a donation or buy a daffodil pin or flowers are supporting the Canadian Cancer Society’s long history of helping people with cancer and funding life-saving research.

The Canadian Cancer Society, first formed in 1938, saw its initial role as education, providing doctors with the information that would allow for an early and accurate diagnosis of cancer.

In 1947, the Cancer Society switched gears from just better educating healthcare providers to funding research that would help Canadians with cancer live

longer and more fulfilling lives.

In the early days this was a daunting task. Survival rates in the 1950s were less than 35 percent, and government funding of cancer research was simply inadequate.

Since 1947, the Canadian Cancer Society has provided more than a billion dollars for cutting edge cancer research. The Canadian Cancer Society was honoured in 2003 when an international study ranked Canadian cancer research the best in the world. Survival rates across the board are now over 60 percent, and some cancers like thyroid and testicular cancer have survival rates of over 90 percent.

Much work still needs to be done. Every three minutes a Canadian is told they have cancer. Almost half of all Canadians are expected to develop cancer sometime in their lives. By 2030, the rate of new cancer cases across Canada is expected to increase by nearly 40 percent. Cancer unfortunately still kills more Canadians than all other natural causes combined.

As the largest charitable funder of cancer research, Daffodil Month sales and contributions are crucial to provide the necessary dollars to fight cancer through less invasive and more effective treatments.

HOSPICE CORE TRAINING

Caring and compassion have always been trademark qualities of the many people who volunteer with the Community Care Health & Care Network’s Hospice Services.

The organization is offering the chance for new volunteers to get involved with helping to ease the journey of local residents facing serious illness, end of life, and grief and bereavement. A training series for interested volunteers begins in April. Hospice Core Training begins April 10 and runs for 10 sessions (Tuesday and Fridays, 1 to 4pm), at 2 Kent St. W. in Lindsay.

Volunteers are the backbone of many Hospice services offered at no cost to local residents, according to Program Co-ordinator Carolyn Parkes. Such volunteers support Hospice clients living with critical illness in the community. Upon completion of the

Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) is pleased to announce that Dr. Melissa Bak has joined the practice of Dr. Peter Petrosoniak.

Dr. Bak received her medical degree from the University of Queensland, Australia in 2014. She completed her Family Medicine Residency at McMaster University in 2017. Dr. Bak and Dr. Petrosoniak will be caring for patients currently in the practice with no new patients being accepted at this time.

Dr. Bak is the proud mother of a newborn, and she and her husband are looking forward to raising their family in the City of Kawartha Lakes. “I am looking forward to getting to know the patients in the practice, along with exploring all that the City of Kawartha Lakes has to offer,” she says.

McLean: Margaret Victoria (nee Simpson) Passed away peacefully on March 8 at Ross Memorial Hospital with her children and her "other daughter" Jill by her side. Margaret was born Oct. 2, 1927 in Ottawa to the late Joseph and Margaret (Summers) Simpson. Marg, as she was known by all, was proud of her family, friends and community.

She was always doing something to help the community of Bobcaygeon, where she lived for over 50 years. She was particularly involved with the Kinnette Club, Cancer Society, The Legion Branch and The Ladies Auxiliary where she was the Zone Commander for 20 years. One of her greatest joys was anything that involved children.

As Legion Branch Youth Chairman she was excited to lead the Public Speaking and Essay Contests, and Children’s’ Christmas Party, to name just a few.

Perhaps her most rewarding committee was Canada Day. She was a proud Canadian and wanted to pass that love to others. She did so by starting Canada Day festivities in Bobcaygeon 30 years ago. Marg received numerous awards and accolades, perhaps her most treasured was the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal. Margaret was predeceased in death by her loving husband Dr. James Frances Leo McLean. She is survived by her son James, daughter Margaret Anne (Crowley), son-in-law Bernard and her beloved grandchildren, Nicholas, Courtney and Emily. Sister of the late Frank (Isabel); late Bill (Helen); late Rita; and late Jim (Dot). Sister in law of Frank & the late Jo Mancini; late Josephine & Fred Condon; late Anna & Len Wallace; late Theresa and Steve Smegal; late Tom and Nori McLean; Gerrard & Adele McLean; Terry & late Betty McLean; late Ernie & Judy McLean; late Gord & Barb McLean; Bernard & Mureta McLean. Marg also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews. A mass of Christian burial will take place at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Bobcaygeon on Friday March 16, 2018 at 10:00 AM. Visitation to take place on Thursday March 15, 2018 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM and 7:00 – 9:00 PM at THE HENDREN FUNERAL HOMES, MONK CHAPEL.
