Happy Victoria Day! The first threeday weekend of the summer is finally here with some warmer weather. I actually heard someone complaining last week about how hot it was! After the long winter, I for one am grateful for the warmth and sunshine. How about you? So what to do with these three days? There are garage sales, community events, fishing, reading on the deck, chores (of course), but also renewing connections with family and friends. Spending time with loved ones, no matter what you’re doing, is a great way to kick off the season! As always, the snowbirds are back and seasonal residents come up to open the cottage or summer home. That means more people on the streets and sidewalks, so please be careful out there. It also means lineups for coffee, groceries, and perhaps your favourite alcoholic beverage, so make sure you’ve got your patience and good manners at the ready. For those visitors who have picked up this issue of The Kawartha

Friends of the Osprey

With regards to the e-mails about the dangerously leaning Osprey platform at the the Forbert Pool, we have been in contact with the environmental manager of Hydro One. We believe he had planned earlier this year to correct the situation but the ice storm hit. By the time that mess was cleaned up, the Osprey were already back and it was too late for this season. That means we will likely lose the chicks again this year. What has to be done is the old leaning platform needs to be removed. A new safer platform has already been installed but Osprey are tremendous creatures of habit and it is very difficult to get them to move from their original nest. We have tried relocation several times and always met with failure. With the regards of Osprey rescue, we are now recommending “Shades of Hope” at Pefferlaw as the place to take injured or rescued Osprey. They are very close to our area and were successful in rehabilitating and releasing two Osprey last year. S. Connell Bobcaygeon

This latest council meeting was very lively and fast moving. Much was discussed, and it was clear that some pre-election posturing was starting to show itself in the discussion and debate during the two-hour-plus meeting.

Forbert Pool Parking

A petition was presented by a group of concerned citizens regarding the “dangerous” condition of the Forbert swimming pool parking lot in Bobcaygeon. The petition suggested that the City was not doing its due diligence in maintaining this very busy parking lot. The petition called for action sooner rather than later, before someone was badly hurt in a “slip and fall” accident. A private paving firm suggested that the lot could be paved for just under $40,000. Mayor Letham accepted the petition, promising that a short-term solution was imminent, and that City staff would present a long-term solution to the decrepit state of the parking lot soon.

Bikefest Concert

A deputation was made by the organizer of Bikefest in Bobcaygeon. Bikefest is a gathering of motorcycle enthusiasts from across the province, this year in Bobcaygeon on Sunday, June 24. Last year the celebration of cycling brought

$267,000 worth of economic activity into the City. This year the organizer wanted to expand the weekend to include a dance at the Bobcaygeon Arena. Under current regulations, the organizers would have had to partner with a non-profit group to get a Special Occasion Permit for liquor to be sold at the dance. The organizer asked that this requirement be waived, and that for this one activity the committee running the weekend be allowed to sell liquor independently of a non-profit partner. Profits from the weekend will be reinvested in the community through the Legion and expansion of services at the Walk-In Clinic in Bobcaygeon. The city declared the event a “municipally significant event” and allowed the partnering with a non-profit to be waived. The dance will occur on Saturday, June 23, and ticket sales are going well.

Barron Avenue Sidewalks

Construction of sidewalks will proceed in the eastward neighborhood in Lindsay immediately, despite well-organized opposition from the residents in the area. Councillors Dunn and Breadner spoke passionately in favour of at least pre-empting the project until development around this sub-division warranted more infrastructures like sidewalks. The City’s decision to go ahead was motivated by accessibility issues which are provincially mandated, the possibility of litigation if sidewalks aren’t built and someone is hurt, and the dangerous precedent

The City of Kawartha Lakes Parks, Recreation and Culture Department has closed Logie Street Park for reconstruction and the majority of lilacs at our main garden have been catalogued, removed and, with all dedication markers, safely stored at a local tree farm for the next two years. this decision would have created if in the future other builders reneged on their subdivision agreements. Staff was directed to put the sidewalks in at the earliest possible opportunity.

Weldon Road Intersection

Two potential mayoral candidates clashed over traffic control at the busy intersection of Highway 36 and Weldon Road. Gord James, Councillor for the ward in question, has recently filed his papers to run for Mayor, and most believe Mayor Letham will also be standing for re-election. In 2015, Council approved the installation of a half-light at the intersection, controlled by pedestrians wanting to cross the well-travelled thoroughfare. Because of a lack of electricity a temporary fourway stop was installed. According to James, access to electricity has been rectified, but that intersection still waits for a light. The lighting system would cost approximately $100,000. A pointed discussion ensued between he and the Mayor on where the money would come from, and Councillor James requested that the lights be installed before the beginning of the next school year. City staff explained that there was very little chance of the lights being ready for the new school year. The motion for lights immediately was tabled, and a new motion to include the lights in the 2019 budget received almost unanimous support.

Green Space Protocols

Councillor Dunn brought up the issue of the lack of civic consultation regarding the sell off of City-owned green spaces. Dunn suggested the need for serious discussion at Council before any piece of municipallyowned green space is sold, and that public notice and early consultation with all stakeholders needs to become the norm. Council supported Dunn’s motion, and staff will bring a report back to Council with suggestions for a formalized structure so the City retains its significant public green spaces.

BESSIE AVENUE NORTH ALLOWANCE

At the May 1 meeting, Trent Lakes Council passed a by-law allowing the road agreement between the Municipality and Gee and Fawcett to move forward on extending the unopened road allowance on Bessie Avenue North off County Road 36. Families living in the quiet neighbourhood have expressed concerns to Council regarding road use, safety, truck traffic and environmental issues. There is also some speculation that the future use of the road could be to haul aggregate from the Schedule C land (land designated for aggregate extraction on the Provincial Plan) at the end of the Bessie Avenue North Road allowance. In response to the concerns of Council and citizens, Josh Fawcett (Fawcett Excavating) sent an email to the Municipality stating his intentions for the road which will cost him an estimated $72,000 to complete. Fawcett claims that the road will see only limited use a few times each day as the facility at the road end is storage for heavy equipment only. Trucks will leave at 7am and return after 5pm. There will be no interference with children and buses and no business will be conducted out of the storage site. Fawcett also defended widening the road (from 10 feet to 24 feet), removing hills and bends and clearing trees as necessary for safety. Mayor Bev Matthews stated that she had some concerns too. “There may be another plan but we can only deal with what is in front of us at the moment.” The initial draft road agreement came to Council on April 17, 2018 from the Director of Public Works, Ivan Coumbs.

DECISION APPEALED

The citizens of Trent Lakes opposing the development of a mega quarry near Nogies Creek were expecting the proponent to appeal and they did so on May 3. Dewdney Mountain Farms has launched a ‘Leave to Appeal’ the April 18 Local Planning Appeal Tribunal (Tribunal, former OMB) decision made by Member Gerald S. Swinkin regarding haul route noise mitigation on Ledge and Quarry roads in Trent Lakes. The Leave to Appeal to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice (Divisional Court) in Oshawa is scheduled to take place on September 27, 2018. That appeal is open to the public. The April 18 Tribunal decision was found in favour of the appellants, many who live along the proposed haul route of Quarry and Ledge Roads in Trent Lakes. Dewdney Mountain Farms, the proponent, will argue in court in September that the Tribunal member ignored the evidence put forward stating mitigation was possible for the haul route. In a two-day hearing held at Trent Lakes Municipal Building, the appellant’s lawyer, Eric Gillespie, convinced the Tribunal member, Swinkin that the proponents (Dewdney) had no real

plan and ignored many other issues around hauling huge aggregate trucks through residential communities on rural roads. The proposed mega quarry cannot go forward unless this haul route issue can be rectified to the satisfaction of the courts and the Municipality of Trent Lakes, who in the end decide whether or not to enter into a ‘haul route agreement’ with Dewdney. No aggregate license can be issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests until that ‘haul route agreement’ is completed. Neighbouring community members from Bobcaygeon and Buckhorn and beyond have also been active over the years attempting to halt the development of this quarry in a very environmentally sensitive area near Nogies Creek. The creek itself is a spawning ground for muskellunge and home to the endangered Blandings Turtle. The worry is that limestone dust will travel into Nogies Creek, destroying the pristine water source that feeds Pigeon Lake. There have been many concerns brought forward in various hearings on the issue but now in this round of arguments it will all boil down to the hauling of aggregate through a rural neighbourhood and the risks involved in doing that.

The Rotary Club of Fenelon Falls is celebrating the grand opening of the new Fenelon Falls SplashPad with a community party on Saturday, June 16 from 11am to 1pm. Hundreds of anglers will hit Sturgeon Lake May 25 to 27 for the 38th Annual Canada/US Walleye Tournament. This live release event brings 150 teams of anglers from across Canada and the US to vie for the top prize and bragging rights for the next year. On May 26 and 27, the boats take off from Little Bob Channel under the bridge at County Road 24. Everyone is welcome to join the great Walleye mascot fish on the bridge between 6:30 and 7:30 in the morning to wave off the 300 male and female anglers. Organizers tell us that Eggsmart on Bolton Street will open early on that day, so after seeing off the anglers, stop by for a great breakfast! The spring-like weather has finally arrived and the Choristers are into the final practices for their Spring concert on the evening of May 26 at Trinity United Church. ‘Music Memories’ will be full of songs you will remember and we are sure you will be humming along with us. We are pleased to introduce our special guests -- ‘Riverside’, a barbershop quartet from Peterborough. This quartet is a recent winner of the Novice Division at the Barbershop Society’s Spring competition. We look forward to their visit and presentation. Members were pleased to visit with Barb Dunleavey as she has now moved into the Retirement Suites. Barb had the inspiration of having a choir in Bobcaygeon and so The Bobcaygeon Choristers was born. She will probably be singing along with us from time to time. If you don’t have your ticket yet (they’re only $15) for the concert, they will be available at the door at 6:30pm on May 26 for the 7pm performance. CLASSIC FAVOURITES

Bach, Brahms, Mozart and the others weren’t writing “classical” music. They were writing hits, pop music for the folks who hired them. They wrote for the wealthy, the church and the nobility. The music that stuck, that was popular to sing and play over the centuries, became “classical” music. A hundred years from now, the list of classical composers might include the Beatles and Elton John. Mozart was the Elton John of the 1700s. He was a rock star, perhaps an early version of Michael Jackson? They both died young and were both “unique”. Kawartha Lakes Singers present a “Timeless and Ageless Choral Classics” concert, featuring some of the choir’s favourite rousing selections. Also included will be some lighter fare to get those toes tapping. The concert will take place at Saint James Anglican Church in Fenelon Falls on Tuesday, May 22 at 7:30pm, and on Sunday, May 27 at 2:30pm at Cambridge St. United Church in Lindsay.

Short-term rentals need long-term solutions

The stories are heartbreaking and sad. A young girl allegedly overdosed on drugs in a quiet neighourhood on Lake Scugog while staying at a short-term rental property. The renters went banging on the neighbour’s door for help and the neighbour had to wade through drug paraphernalia at provide CPR. The girl died in hospital. In the upscale subdivision of Rolling Hills Estates near Bobcaygeon, one woman had to sell her house and move. The property next door was being rented out on a short-term basis and the parties frequently got out of control with drunken people using her pool and waterfront dock without permission. In Rockland County in the US, a home was trashed after an Airbnb renter threw a big party. The home’s hot tub was found on the roof; the fireplace damaged; cash, a laptop, iPad and playstation all stolen. Police were called to the home after noise complaints and found 300 people inside. There was $100,000 in damage. In BC, approximately 200 partygoers flooded a home. Police say a young girl rented the home with her parents’ credit card, and that about $20,000 in damage was done to the property as a result of the party. The good news is that after complaints from the Rolling Hills Estates and Lake Scugog Homeowners,

the City of Kawartha Lakes began looking at regulating short-term rentals. Until these incidents, the industry was not regulated locally. They asked the City to consider a bylaw requiring a minimum 30-day stay in certain areas eliminating weekend “party” rentals and the problems that can come with them. The City has asked for input from the community on the issue. Most people who use their homes for shortterm rentals are responsible landlords. Airbnb’s have accommodated over 60 million people in 34,000 cities around the world. That’s a lot of rentals with a very small percentage of complaints. The Old Ingram Schoolhouse in Bobcaygeon is listed on Airbnb. It was built in 1912 and rents for just over $100 night for one guest. It can be a great way to experience new areas and cultures in a unique and inexpensive way. According to local tourism officials there’s a shortage of hotel rooms in the City of Kawartha Lakes and this helps to fill a much needed gap bringing in more tourism dollars. After graduating with a Master of Science and Education degree from Niagara University in 2009, Bobcaygeon native Andrew Brumwell went to a Canadian Armed Forces recruiting centre. He wanted to enlist in the Army as an Artillery Officer, but was told they Photo credit: Lt(N) Linda Coleman needed people in the Navy. So, with his enthusiasm at the ready, Andrew went through naval training in Victoria to become a Naval Warfare Officer. Today, as an Operations Room Officer, Andrew leads a team of 30 to 50 men and women in the “brains of the warship”, planning and executing military operations. Andrew deployed to Kuwait in November 2015 as part of Operation Impact, Canada’s contribution to the fight against ISIS. His role as a Visits and Protocol Officer gave him the responsibility for overseeing visits to the mission and Canadian efforts. When he came home in June 2016 he went to Victoria as Commander of Seamanship Training, putting Boatswains through their paces.

In April 2017 in Halifax, Andrew began his 7 months of training to become an Operations Room Officer, a position he holds today. “Then my former commanding officer from HMCS Montreal told me of an opportunity to take part in the Phoenix Express exercise in Tunisia,” he told me. “I volunteered to go, providing our experience to a number of other navies from around the world who are participating in this exercise.” Andrew is observing, assessing and mentoring at the Maritime Operations Centre in Bizerte, Tunisia. He says, “There’s a huge need for maritime security in this part of the world. Human trafficking, illegal fishing, arms smuggling and terrorist activity put people at risk every day. We’re making a great contribution to help others.” He told me that other navies appreciate Canada’s involvement in Phoenix Express and they’re eagerly listening and learning. Andrew says although they come from different cultures and backgrounds, there is a comraderie among the naval men and women that’s similar to being part of a large, international family. Next up for Andrew is another international exercise, Tradewinds, in the Bahamas. Andrew tries to get home to see his parents, who still live in Bobcaygeon, a couple of times a year. Being a member of the Canadian Armed Forces gives Lt(N) Andrew Brumwell the opportunity to experience other cultures, and the chance to learn about what’s going on in the rest of the world. He considers himself a career military man and looks forward to continuing to represent our country on the international stage.

It was a truly inspiring day where we got to see young dogs being trained to assist people with visual, hearing, and physically challenges, autistic people, and diabetics. It was an amazing experience to see how these wonderful dogs can enhance their owners’ lives, allowing them to enjoy life safely. Hopefully, you have seen our posters and change boxes around our community. Thank you to everyone who has kindly put in their spare change. We have sent out many letters to all of our local businesses hoping that they would generously support such a worthwhile charity. We have received some donations, but sadly not many have replied, which is disappointing for such a wonderful community. We are hoping that they will strongly consider supporting us. All donations will go directly to the Foundation. In 2017 The Land Between charity and The Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre (home of the Turtle Trauma Centre) declared a state of emergency for Ontario’s turtles. This was because there were unprecedented numbers of turtles killed on roads and brought into the trauma centre for treatment. The Turtle Guardians program is a collaborative program that has resulted and evolved in response to the turtle crisis. With partners of The Land Between charity, Ontario Nature, The Toronto Zoo, the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre, Scales Nature Park, EcoKare International, The Trillium Lakelands District School Board and Curve Lake First Nation Cultural Centre, the program has launched Turtle Walks.

Turtle Walkers register and raise pledges in support of the Tunnel and Trauma Campaign. Here half of the funds raised support “prevention” - research and installation of turtle tunnels (fencing to direct turtles under roads) and half of funds go to support “cure” trauma care for injured turtles at the OTCC. “These walks are to raise funding, but also to raise awareness and to give kids and people hope. They are community actions and bring people together for a common cause. This is our first year and we hope and anticipate that they will become annual events and events that eventually span all of Ontario,” said Leora Berman, founder and COO for Turtle Guardians and The Land Between charity. The walks are during the flowering moon - the most active time for turtle nesting in central Ontario. OTHER VOICES WANTING YOUR VOTE

Most adults of voting age are aware that Ontario has three mainstream political parties vying for your support this June. Either the Liberals under Kathleen Wynne, the NDP under Andrea Horwath, and the Progressive Conservatives under Doug Ford certainly have the best chance of forming the next government once the votes are counted. What most voters don’t know is there is already a fourth party with a member sitting in Queen’s Park: the Trillium Party of Ontario. Their member was removed from the Progressive Conservatives for violating party rules and rather than sit as an independent, joined this new party to become their first representative at the Legislative Assembly. Depending on where you live in Ontario, you may find you have a very long ballot to contemplate on voting day. As of April 13, Elections Ontario confirms the registration of 16 other political parties who will be running at least a handful of candidates in June. To run in Ontario, the process is relatively simple. You must register a party name, appoint a Chief Financial Officer, and appoint an outside auditor who will file, with the province, an itemized report at election’s end detailing your party’s spending In alphabetical order these parties include the Communist Party of Ontario, the Cultural Action Party, the Equal Parenting Party, the Freedom Party, the Green Party, the None of the Above Direct Democracy Party, the Northern Ontario Party, the Ontario Alliance Party, the Ontario Confederation of Regions Party, the

Ontario Libertarian Party, the Ontario Moderate Party, the Party for People With Special Needs, the Pauper Party, the Stop the New Sex-Ed Agenda Party, the Peoples Political Party and last but not least the Vegan Environmental Party. The true beauty of democracy is the ability for motivated citizens to join the political process, and have their voices heard. Many of these small parties are urban based, and rely heavily upon university students in their respective communities who are looking for a message not being enunciated by the mainstream “Big Three.” These folks must be true believers in their platforms because they are working against long odds: little money, few volunteers, lack of press coverage, and an indifferent electorate who will generally not vote for a new movement due to a lack of information about their platform and ideals. These parties serve an important role, hopefully giving everyone someone to vote for. Almost 90 years ago, my grandfather, a labour activist and Teamsters of Canada organizer, joined a tiny little party, the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation in Regina, Saskatchewan. The movement grew like a prairie grassfire taking power in Saskatchewan under Tommy Douglas in 1944. In the early 1960s, the party merged with organized labour in eastern Ontario to become the NDP. All parties have to start somewhere, and it will be intriguing to see how many Ontario voters do their due diligence, and take a chance on one of these small political parties that just might perfectly represent how they are feeling when they step into the voting booth. Choice is democracy at its best.

PETERBOROUGH-KAWARTHA RIDING A KEY

Every election has specific races that attract an unusual amount of attention. In the upcoming provincial election, Peterborough-Kawartha is going to be one of those ridings that political pundits will be watching closely hoping the outcome there will help predict the overall results province wide. Peterborough-Kawartha is the home of Liberal Cabinet Minister Jeff Leal. Leal, first elected in 2003, is viewed as competent, likeable and an excellent constituency politician. Leal has brought significant government money into the riding, and is visible at almost every local event worthy of political dignitaries. If Jeff Leal holds this riding, then perhaps there is hope for the Wynne Liberals. If Leal loses the riding, where his personal popularity is unchallenged, it is going to be a very long night for the provincial Liberals. Leal’s challengers include Dave Smith for the Progressive Conservatives, Rod Roddick for the Trillium Party, and Sean Conway for the New Democratic Party. Progressive Conservative candidate Smith is a manager for software development at Cardinal Software in Peterborough. A lifelong volunteer in the community, Smith believes it is time for a change in PeterboroughKawartha. Smith is wisely making the election about Kathleen Wynne, rather than Jeff Leal, and hopes the burgeoning “Hate Kate” movement will put him over the top. Smith, who supported centrist Christine Elliot in the recent PC leadership race, is at best publicly a tepid supporter of new leader Doug Ford. This decision could cost him on election night as polling tells us Fordites will vote, and might just vote Trillium if Smith is not seen G YOU HELPIN T WE DO A H W IS

as absolutely loyal to the new regime. The Trillium Party of Ontario, that first ran candidates in the 2014 election, is a right-wing socially conservative party that has risen out of the ashes of so many other fringe movements that have come before. Rod Roddick, a retired carpenter and truck driver, will be their candidate in June. Most election watchers note that Doug Ford and his current platform have essentially stolen any thunder this movement would have ever had by moving the PCs further to the political right than they have been since Mike Harris was Premier. Finally, Sean Conway, a Curve Lake First Nations singer-songwriter, will be carrying the NDP banner. Conway, only 26, fits the pattern for the local New Democratic Party riding associations who are having considerable success attracting young, intelligent and articulate candidates to their movement. Conway hopes to bring a different perspective to this election, highlighting issues that are a priority for Millennial and Gen-X voters. Recent interviews in the riding seem to indicate that key issues in the election will be jobs and hydro costs. Long-time employer General Electric has laid off another 350 employees, and that could be the proverbial “elephant in the room” in this election cycle. Local observers expect Smith to hammer Leal at every opportunity about the decline of manufacturing jobs in the riding. If this is truly the “change election” that some are predicting, even relatively safe Liberals like Jeff Leal could be swept away by a sea of Tory blue. Election night in Peterborough-Kawartha is going to be very interesting as always.

Community Partnership at its Best!

We can’t tell you how excited we are to be able to offer our community beautiful new public docks and a new boat ramp in Norland and Coboconk for this Spring and Summer. The Coboconk, Norland & Area Chamber of Commerce spearheaded a project that started more than a year ago to improve multiple public boat docks and a boat ramp in Coboconk and Norland. The goal of this project is to improve safe access to our lakes and rivers and provide a functional and attractive way to bring seasonal residents, residents, and tourists into the downtowns by boat. With safe and attractive docking, there is also an opportunity for new recreation businesses to start up. The locations of the new and improved docks include: a new dock great for paddlers at Riverside Parkette; a much-needed new boat ramp in Norland on Government Dock Road with a dock extension that will rise and fall with the water levels; two new docks at Coboconk Lions Park; a gorgeous new dock at Coboconk’s Mill Pond with multiple boat tie-ups and a beautiful new accessible ramp to get to the dock.

The real story here is the way our communities have come together to make these huge projects such a success. Multiple levels of government, local community organizations and groups, and individuals all saw the importance of this project and helped to make it happen. When you see these folks around town, please help us to thank them: Kawartha Lakes CFDC and FedDev, the City of Kawartha Lakes Parks & Rec were a huge partner in this project, the Fresh Water Summit Organizing Committee, the Shadow Lakes Association, Riverside Inn, the Forsters, and the Coboconk Lions Club. And we can’t forget the folks who worked on these projects and donated some time and/or materials to it – Houston’s Marine and Jackett & Sons. This project is part of the Coboconk/Norland Downtown Revitalization initiative. Other successes in this project include the free WiFi at the wharf and the new Community Event signs coming into town. Thank you to all partners for your support! We hope you enjoy these improved features in our community. Please note: There is some soft ground at the Norland Boat Ramp right now due to the crazy weather we have had in the past month or so. This will be fixed up as soon as weight restrictions are lifted and in time for the May long weekend. After a fun-filled day with the family on the long-weekend Saturday (May 19), it’s time for the lady of the house to get treated to a night out. And where better to do that than in Fenelon Falls for their annual Diva Night? The festivities kick off at 5pm and there are plenty of female-inspired activities. There’s an entire generation of people who have no idea who Queen Victoria was – but everyone is willing to take an extra day off work and school to celebrate her birthday. So here’s a little backstory on the second-longest reigning monarch in British history. In 1845, the parliament of the Province of Canada (as it was known then) passed legislation to officially recognize May 24 as a national holiday to commemorate Queen Victoria’s birthday. Here’s a little known local connection to the history of Her Majesty as found on Wikipedia: On May 24 in 1866, which was her 47th birthday, Omemee mounted a day-long traditional celebration to mark her birthday, including a gun salute at midnight, pre-dawn serenades, picnics, a torch light procession and athletic competitions. During her 63 years on the throne, Queen Victoria survived at least six assassination attempts and was one of the first on record to be targeted by a stalker – a teenager who managed to break into Buckingham Palace several times, hiding under the Queen’s sofa, sitting on her throne and reportedly even stealing her underwear! Following the Queen’s death in 1901, May 24 was officially declared Victoria Day. Canada is the only country that commemorates Queen Victoria with an official holiday. Enjoy!

Emerald Ash Borer

The emerald ash borer is a small insect that damages and kills trees within one to four years of infestation. The ash borer has just recently become more prevalent in central Ontario. The fact that it has very few natural enemies, combined with the fact that native ash trees have limited resistance to attack, these insects have become a major problem very quickly. Typically, within six years of a woodlot infestation, more than 99% of the ash trees will have been attacked and killed. The prevalence and area infested by ash borer is expected to continue to expand, mostly through the movement of infested material such as firewood. Trees affected by the ash borer become a hazard as they become weak, and because of this, it is recommended you get your ash trees inspected. If your trees have been infested, they may need to be removed to prevent further spread of disease. However, trees can also be injected with insecticides to protect them from being attacked by the ash borer. Former Kawartha Promoter columnist, Julia Taylor, has a new venture. She’s the new owner of Country Cupboard in Fenelon Falls and is taking her philosophy of “greening it up” to her new endeavour. Shopping at Country Cupboard is about more than friendly, local customer service and saving money though, it is also an environmental choice. “We have not given out a plastic bag in over a month, instead we offer free glass jars, free cloth bags, or paper bags,” said Julia. “We have gone plastic free for bulk food.” Customers also receive an additional 10 percent discount for bringing in your own reusable containers on top of the already great prices. “Community enthusiasm has been amazing, with 99.9% of people taking advantage of the jars, and over half of our customers bringing their own reusable containers,” said Julia. “We have also been able to switch a lot of our most purchased packaged products to bulk to reduce waste, and switched to compostable spoons and cups for frozen yogurt.” Country Cupboard also provides cloth or paper grocery bags for whole purchases. The free jars that are available to customers are pre-weighed and set out, and when people bring in their own jars they weigh them before filling so they are not charged for the weight of the jar. NATURE PROGRAMS FOR KIDS

We are so fortunate in COKL to have organizations that offer outdoor education for children of all ages. Kawartha Conservation and Gamiing Nature Centre are two of them who have developed programs that teach our kids to cherish the natural world. The Nature Explorer Camp at Kawartha Conservation, in partnership with Fleming College, is a weeklong camp that offers children 6 to 10 years of age hands-on activities geared to the environment or nature. There is a Parent and Tot Nature Program, that allows parents or caregivers and their young children (ages 2 to 4) to connect with nature in a safe, nurturing environment, providing quality time and learning through fun crafts, sensory games, circle times, sharing, stories and more. This exciting new program will be held at Ken Reid Conservation Area and will provide a morning of outdoor activities led by a Kawartha Conservation educator. This session will include circle time for structured sharing, singing and stories. The cost of 12 sessions is $180; for six sessions is $90; and the price per session is $20. This activity is held on Thursday mornings at Ken Reid Conservation Area from 9:30am to 11:30am. The program runs May 24 and 31; June 7, 14, and

21; July 12, 19 and 26; and August 16, 23 and 30. For more information visit www.kawarthaconservation. com/education. Kawartha Conservation also offers a Youth Leadership Workshop for teens aged 13 to 15. This program will work in conjunction with their Summer Camp programs. They are looking for students who would like to become an Outdoor Environmental Education Leader and enjoy working with children. This free workshop will give students a 2-day workshop where participants learn the fundamentals of leadership and youth outdoor education such as team building, health and safety, activity structure, creating guidelines, motivation, self-awareness and effective communication. In order to receive certification, the participants must then sign on for the practical component where they will volunteer for 40 hours in one of the six week-long nature explorer camps. Forest School at Gamiing is an inspirational process offering regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through handson learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment. Gamiing completed a Forest School pilot project during the fall and winter with great success. Many of us enjoy getting our hands into the earth and growing our own veggies in the backyard. How much would it take to plant an extra row to donate to neighbours in need? Kawartha Lakes Food Source’s annual Plant A Row Grow A Row program encourages gardeners and farmers to do just that. In the last two years, the amount of fresh produce donated has decreased, largely due to the poor weather that affected last year’s growing season. They’re asking that you donate any extra fresh produce such as carrots, green and yellow beans, onions, garlic, corn, peas, cucumbers, tomatoes, potatoes, onion, peppers, apples, cabbage, squash, beets, young zucchini, spinach, kale and turnips to Kawartha Lakes Food Source or your local food banks to support this program. During the program, participants will learn how to use a digital camera (cameras are provided) and acquire a variety of photography techniques, ranging from basic to advanced. The Lindsay and District Sports Hall of Fame is seeking nominations for induction into the Hall for the year 2018. The Hall provides a public forum for recognition of individuals or teams who have made a significant contribution to sports through personal or team achievements. Nominees must be athletes or builders of sport who have resided in the City of Kawartha Lakes area for a lengthy period. Athletes must have excelled in their sport through superior achievements recognized by their peers and organizations. Builders must have exhibited a high degree of success through dedicated involvement over a lengthy period of time. One hundred and twelve individuals and 10 teams have been inducted to date. Individual plaques, pictures and memorabilia are on display in the foyer located at the main entrance to the Lindsay Recreation Complex. The Board of Directors selects approximately four nominees per year who are recognized at formal induction ceremonies to be held on October 21, 2018. Health & Wellness REXALL FOUNDATION DONATES TO COMMUNITY CAREGIVERS

Local residents experiencing the loss of a loved one will benefit from the Rexall Foundation’s generous support of Community Care Hospice Services. The Foundation recently donated $5,000 to Hospice grief support services, on behalf of local Rexall pharmacies. The funding will particularly assist local seniors who are facing the loss of a family member or close friend. Grief support offered by Community Care Hospice Services is designed to ensure that no one has to grieve alone if they wish not to. Hospice offers grief support through a variety of individual and group programs and is available to all ages. “One of the realities of aging is that individuals increasingly deal with loss as they get older,” explains Hospice Manager Ryan Alexander. “Though coping with the death of a spouse at any age is a lifeshattering experience, it can be devastating for seniors who have spent lifetimes together. Coupled with loss of friends in their later years, dealing with grief can be more difficult for seniors whose support circles are shrinking. This funding from the Rexall Foundation will certainly help Hospice provide grief support for our clients – many of whom are seniors.”

The Rexall Foundation helps build strong, vibrant communities by supporting numerous charitable organizations that focus on health and wellness for children and seniors. Each year, Hospice assists more than 500 clients with grief support programs. One-third of clients seeking grief support are age 65 or older, and more than 80 per cent of the program’s volunteer Grief Guides are 65 or older. “These statistics, and feedback from clients themselves, tell us that we are providing much needed grief support to seniors in our community,” Mr. Alexander says. “Additionally, older adults value our grief supports so much that, many circle back at a later date to become volunteer Grief Guides to help others in our community.” Community Care Hospice Services is the only provider of grief support programs locally. The grief programs are unfunded and the organization relies on generous support from the community to continue to offer the services free of charge.

“We’re thrilled to begin these enhancements to the X-ray and Mammography areas of the Diagnostic Imaging Department,” said Veronica Nelson. “This modernization will impact both our patients and our staff, and help us to achieve our goals to provide exceptional quality patient care and experiences, and to be an exceptional workplace.” This redevelopment project will see the right-sizing of the X-ray (general radiography) rooms, turning four small spaces into three larger rooms that will better accommodate new equipment and workflow, and improve patient accessibility. The enhancements also include the installation of a new 3D Mammography unit, purchased with the help of generous donors in our community. Work will begin in the coming weeks, and will be done in phases to limit the disruption to patients and wait times. More than 70,000 exams are performed in the Diagnostic Imaging Department annually, including 35,000 X-ray exams and 5,900 Mammograms.

HEALTHCARE AND POLITICS

With a provincial election in the air, no doubt healthcare funding will get loads of that air time. That’s not the case for public health: it usually takes a crisis like SARS or Walkerton to grab the public’s attention and propel us onto the political radar screen. In this short window of pre-election political hyperawareness, being an advocate for upstream public health approaches that may take decades to produce results can be a lonely calling. Local boards of health across this province will be reminding the public of the importance of this approach across the many issues that face us. So hopefully, it won’t be surprising to see local public health collaborating in a nonpartisan way to promote civic engagement by encouraging all eligible voters to be well-informed before casting their ballots on June 7. I can understand why preventing bad things from happening can be a tad abstract or remote. But prevention can make a lot of sense, even during an election. Public health proponents would advocate for an increase in household incomes, using strategies like a higher minimum wage or a guaranteed basic income, so that food insecurity, currently at 16.5 percent of Peterborough households, could be eliminated, or at least significantly diminished. There is scientific evidence that shows how ending both poverty and the growing socio-economic disparity in such a wealthy and prosperous province as ours would reap public health benefits for all. I have great admiration for the women and men who dedicate their lives to become elected politicians and encourage everyone to extend to them, the same esteem and respect directed to community volunteers. The Central East Local Health Integration Network (Central East LHIN) has launched a new innovative online mental health services for individuals in our area and across the province. Supported by funding from the Government of Ontario and the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN) announced the availability of Big White Wall®. A 24/7 online mental health platform available free and without referral for youth 16+ and adults, Big White Wall® provides a support community, education and guided self-help programs with the aim of reducing social isolation for people struggling with anxiety and depression. Additionally, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Ontario Division unveiled BounceBack®, a free skill-building program designed to help adults and youth 15+ manage mild to moderate depression and anxiety. The program offers two types of support: one-on-one telephone coaching using workbooks, and a series of online videos that offer practical tips. Inspection results online

It will soon be easier for residents to check the inspection results of their local restaurants, hair and beauty salons, and recreational water facilities. Health units must post all inspection and reinspection results for affected businesses on a public website. As well, affected businesses must post a sign on their premises showing the results of their most recent health unit inspection. Food premises must also have someone trained in safe food handling on site at all times when their premise is open or operating. The Health Unit’s program, called HKPR CheckINspection, will launch on July 1, with residents able to visit the Health Unit’s website and find a link to information they need.

Boysen, B. Michel (Mike) In his 89th year, he passed away peacefully at Ross Memorial Hospital on Thursday May 10, 2018. He was predeceased by his wife Liesbeth (2011). He leaves son Michael (Diane), son Eric (Barb) and daughter Ingrid. Loving grandfather (Opa) to Laura, Jonathan, Scott, Kristin(Steven), James, Emma, Leanna, and Connie. Proud great-grandfather to Thea, Henry and William. He will be missed by his brother John, sister Gera (Jim), sisterin-law Els (Willem), brother-in-law Hendrik, sister-in-law Verna, and his many nieces and nephews in Canada, Netherlands, and South Africa. Mike loved his 15 years in Bobcaygeon and was an active member of Trinity United Church and a strong supporter of the Bobcaygeon Music Council rarely missing a concert. He took great joy in riding the streets of Bobcaygeon on his scooter proudly flying his Dutch flag. A private family service will be held at a later time. Hansen, Jens Vilhelm It is with greatest sorrow that we announce Jens’ passing on May 3 at Case Manor in Bobcaygeon, Ontario in his 79th year. He valiantly fought cancer for 6 years and in the past year, he endeavoured to combat the effects of a debilitating stroke. Son of the late Sigurd and Valborg Hansen, Jens was the beloved spouse of Heather Elizabeth Jenkinson of Bobcaygeon and formerly of Toronto. He was the loving father of Karen Frisk; grandfather of Helena, Rebecca, Hannah and Christopher; and the youngest sibling of Else, Niels, Bodil and the late Mette, all of Copenhagen, DK. He also leaves to mourn many close friends worldwide including those at his Magnolia Square condominium park in Largo, Florida. His exuberant personality will be sadly missed. After service in both the Danish and Canadian Air Force, Jens joined Air Canada in 1967 where he served as Captain on many different aircraft for many years until his retirement from the A340 in 1999. He loved that life. Jens was a very generous sponsor of a number of charities and was giving of his personal time as well. One of his many contributions included providing air passage, companionship and care for a young lady suffering from spinal paralysis to travel to China to benefit from Stem Cell Therapy. His recreation time was occupied by golf, boating and tennis. Cremation is to take place immediately and a Celebration of Jens’ Life will be announced at a later date. Memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice. 44

Daryl Margaret Elmslie: After a brief illness, Daryl passed away on Friday, April 27, 2018 at the Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay. Daryl (nee McNutt) is survived by her husband Doug Elmslie of Fenelon Falls. Loving mother of Matthew and his wife Brona Little, Sam, and Rachel and her husband Jason Cuthbertson. Dear grandmother of Gareth, Devlin, William, and Sam. Daryl is pre-deceased by her parents Ger and Adeline (Winx) McNutt, and her brother Terry McNutt. Fondly remembered by her sister-in-law Diane McNutt. Daryl was most proud of her family, friends, and former jobs at the Montreal Gazette, Hallmark Cards, and most recently the Fenelon Animal Clinic where she was a friend to clients both twoand four-legged. She enjoyed time well spent playing word games, reading, and of course crocheting. She traveled extensively to many parts of the world. She always had a quick quip or snappy retort for any situation. She had a highly developed sense of justice and fair play, her watchword was loyalty, and she was a true friend to many. Her passing makes our world a sadder and lonelier place. At her request, Daryl chose to be cremated and desired not to have a formal service. Her family will be planning a remembrance event at a future date. ONE MAN’S TRASH ...

Ah, a sunny weekend at last. And, as we celebrate Victoria Day long weekend, it’s actually the unofficial kick-off for Yard Sale Season! I’ll never forget John’s first yard sale experience. When we moved in together there were a lot of duplicate items and, quite frankly, ugly knick knacks from his past that had to go. So, I organized a yard sale. He was hesitant to say the least ... He said: Why would anyone buy my old stuff? I said: That’s what yard sales are all about. He said: Seriously though, who’s going to pay money for my old stuff? I said: Wait and see, grasshopper. So I set up the yardsale outside our home in Leaside. I had something for everyone ... records, books, mugs, knick knacks and my bright blue sombrero from a vacation in Mexico pre-John. I put

signs up around the neighbourhood and in our local community newspaper and lo and behold, people came! And they bought his old stuff. So much so that halfway during the sale, he came out of the house, saw the crowd, turned around back into the house and came out again with more of his old stuff! Oh, and the sombrero ... a free gift with purchase for the first buyer, who happened to bring her young son with her and he was thrilled with that hat!!! Here are some quick pointers for yard sale etiquette: •D on’t show up early: There’s nothing more annoying than the “early birds” who arrive before everything is out and then want a deal. Please respect the timing. • Haggling: Some sellers are willing to give a bargain,e specially if you’re taking a number of items or a set of something. But there are others who will not budge on price. •D on’t criticize: It’s hard enough to put a sale together and part with stuff. Keep your comments to yourself!
