Ah, the long weekend at last! The Victoria Day weekend signifies the opening of cottage country for many people. For those of us lucky enough to live here, it has a whole other meaning!

It’s the time we can get out into our gardens without, gasp, the threat of frost or snow. I love digging in the dirt, but learned several years ago the hazards of getting too anxious to plant veggies and not-sohardy annuals. That was the year we had snow on May 14. Egads!

It’s also the time when we need to practice our patience, as the seasonal residents and visitors descend. There will be lineups at the LCBO, the grocery store and now we’ll need reservations at our restaurants. But that’s okay with me ... these folks bring a renewed energy to our communities and, most importantly, their spending dollars. This season is what keeps many of our small businesses going

In my role as President of the Buckhorn District Tourist Association, I spoke with a representative at Peterborough County the other day about the progress of the reconstruction of the Buckhorn bridge. For months, we’ve been reading the sign that said the bridge work would be completed

by May 19. Sadly, that is not to be.

According to Peter Nielsen at the County, the bridge construction will not be finished by the long weekend. He said it may be another 4 to 6 weeks before the two lanes are open again. Apparently, there have been structural and weather delays that have pushed the deadline into June.

That will definitely have an impact on the businesses in Buckhorn, on both sides of the bridge. So we’re keeping our fingers crossed that Mother Nature cooperates over the next few weeks to give the workers primo conditions.

Bumpcaygeon Potholes

I was interested to read Deb Crossen’s article on “Bumpcaygeon” in the April 21 Promoter.

Last February, I was one of the victims of the pothole fiasco in Bobcaygeon. A new tire was installed on my car and about 100kms later, I hit a pothole on North Street near the old medical building. The tire was declared non-repairable by Canadian Tire and by Patrick’s. The replacement cost over $150.

On requesting compensation from the CKL, they took two months to tell me that “CKL took reasonable

This is hard to believe as the pothole in question was not repaired two weeks later and not even a marker cone placed there.

Surely CKL should be held responsible for keeping our roads in useable condition and compensating people for damages incurred.

Who is Representing Omemee?

With the stroke of a pen over 50 years of a community asset was taken away from the village of Omemee.

With no regard to the impact on the future of Omemee and no effort at all to save Lady Eaton Elementary School as well as its important daycare facility, it truly is a sad day for the people of the village and outlying area who rely on this institution.

Not a word in support of this school was heard from our local trustee, municipal Councillor or provincial MPP. The very people who were elected to support us decided that this school in Omemee was not worthy of its future existence. I at least asked questions in writing to the Trillium Lakelands District School Board but to no avail. Unfortunately, local elected representatives seem afraid to question the authority of the unelected education bureaucracy that is controlling our system.

Our education system, contrary to what the media has been told, is actually flush with government money.

In fact over the last 10 years the provincial government has increased the funding by over $8.3 billion (Fraser Institute). Where is it going?

Seventy-five percent is going to compensation and to pay for the archaic system that we have leaving the local boards to close up to 300 schools on the chopping list while the bureaucracy thrives and lives well at the expense of our small communities.

Lady Eaton Elementary School was a school that had lots of land around it and should have been expanded in the 90s, but another school was built in a location so tight for space that the school track was constructed in the parking lot; talk about poor planning.

It’s now time to ask your local representative why they didn’t stand up for Omemee and just stood silent. Other communities have risen up and fought back to keep their school. The Bluewater School Board allowed a two-year freeze on the closure of their schools in Markdale, Ontario as Chapman Dairy and other businesses partnered to save it.

There doesn’t seem to be any creative thinking here at our Board. Omemee needs help to save this school. Contact your local rep and make them earn their money and tell them to fight for their communities! Remember they work for you.

City Hall Correction on CKL Landfill Fees

There is still a charge for mixed loads taken to landfill sites and transfer stations in the City of Kawartha Lakes.

Residents will be charged a $7 minimum if their load of waste contains 20 percent or more of recyclable products. So if your clear garbage bag is more than one-fifth full of anything recyclable (e.g., cans, plastic bottles, cardboard, leaf and yard material, scrap metal, electronics), you will be charged at least $7, more depending on weight. This is considered a mixed load and subject to the additional fees.

The City recommends ensuring that you sort your recyclables from your waste prior to visiting the landfill site to avoid the additional fees.

TL WORKS DEPOT HITS A ROAD BLOCK

The proposed new centralized Works Depot for the Municipality of Trent Lakes hit a roadblock at the May 2 council meeting.

Councillor Dick Persson brought forward a motion to take the Works Depot proposal to a committee for further study.

In an email Councillor Persson stated, “ I agree that we need better facilities for public works, but I am not comfortable with spending more than double the cost of the initial study (Cambium Feasibility Study) when we have other urgent needs.”

Councillors Lambshead and Windover supported the motion to take the proposal to committee.

Councillor Peter Raymond wants the review done as soon as possible as he stated in an email that committees have a ‘habit of slowing things down’. He feels there is no change in council’s direction but that they need to be financially responsible.

surprised by Councillor Persson’s committee motion as she was preparing for the next stage in the project that involved tender ready drawings and specifications.

“The only change is to look at potential cost reductions. The project is still proposed to proceed. I was not aware this (committee motion) was coming forward,” O’Neill-Jackson said in an email.

Public Works Superintendent Ivan Coumbs defended the project size and costs when asked by Mayor Bev Matthews to address the issue.

Coumbs stated that the project could not be built any smaller due to the oversized equipment now used on the roads. He also pointed out that expensive equipment was now stored outdoors where it was rusting as council debated costs that could only go up over time.

MAYOR DRAWS THE LINE

Imagine you are a Trent Lakes or CKL taxpayer and a busy person who pays his taxes on time but never reads the municipal information sheets stuffed in with the bill.

You may even look at municipal employees as people you have a right to discipline on occasion.

Perhaps that transfer station or landfill attendant tried to enforce the new clear bags rule on you? Did you then feel you had the ‘right’ to scream and swear at that attendant because they “work for you?”

Trent Lakes Mayor, Bev Matthews had this to say, “Landfill attendants face a lot of abuse. People don’t read their property tax info, they just look at the bottom line.”

At the May 2 council meeting, Mayor Matthews went on to hand out this warning. “People will lose their (transfer station) privileges if this continues,” she said.

And she means it!

The OPP can also lay criminal charges similar to what they do with high school bullies.

Public sector employees get little respect from some people. Even librarians get yelled at when they look on their commuters and claim you have a video that is 2 years overdue.

Bullying is too common an occurrence against municipal employees and not acceptable for many reasons.

The goal of adult bullies is to gain power over another person. They try to humiliate victims and ‘show them who is the boss’. This situation of bullying is toxic for any work environment as it demoralizes employees, disrupts work and can lead to depression or acts of physical violence.

Municipal employees are our neighbours and friends. They deserve to be treated with respect and fairness by everyone.

officially named the holiday Victoria Day. And it was decided that the day would be celebrated on May 24th each year (or on May 25th if the 24th fell on a Sunday).

In 1952, the government made the decision to begin celebrating Victoria Day on a Monday. It would be observed on May 24th if that worked out, otherwise it would be held on the Monday immediately before it.

Today, Victoria Day is a holiday throughout Canada, except the Atlantic provinces. And, in Quebec, a holiday called Journée nationale des patriotes is celebrated on the same day.

HAPPY VICTORIA DAY

For some, Victoria Day is a sign that summer is just around the corner. The holiday, which is only celebrated in Canada and Scotland, began as a celebration to honour Queen Victoria’s birthday.

The British queen was born on May 24, 1819.

She was the longest reigning monarch (Queen) in England, remaining on her throne for 63 years, 216 days until Queen Elizabeth II took over that honour in September, 2015.

Victoria Day was declared a Canadian holiday by the government in 1845. At that time, it was celebrated with picnics, parades, sporting tournaments, fireworks, and cannon salutes. When Queen Victoria died in 1901, Canada’s parliament

2. Despite being born in England, Victoria only spoke German up until the age of three.

BUCKHORN LOCK 31 REFURBISH

Buckhorn Lock 31 is a masonry lock and one of the busiest stations on the Trent-Severn Waterway.

Over the winter months contractors have been working on the upstream and downstream approach walls; removing grout and repointing, and repairing or replacing stones as required. In addition to masonry work, lock gates were sandblasted, primed and painted. All of this work is part of the more than $600 million of investments currently underway along the length of the Trent-Severn Waterway and its reservoir lakes.

During the latter stages of this repair project, the

upstream mooring wall was found to be in insufficient condition for the upcoming navigation season. Repairs for this wall had been planned for 2018, however visitors and boaters will notice that this wall will be deconstructed and replaced with a temporary woodfaced approach wall for the 2017 season. Concrete repairs to this mooring wall will be completed in the non-navigation season of 2017/18.

The work at the site is now concluding. The gate painting has been completed and the hydraulic lines that control the gates are being hooked up again. The enclosures that have protected the masonry work will soon be removed and contractors will demobilize from the site. The lock will be fully operational by the opening of navigation on May 19, 2017. While there still may be some visible signs of this construction work such as newly placed sod, this will be a shortterm situation and we’ll be working hard all season to ensure that the area is fully restored. Join us on the water this year as we celebrate Canada 150 with free lockage!

The City of Kawartha Lakes Parks, Recreation and Culture division is currently seeking responsible, energetic and reliable volunteers to assist at the 39th Annual Lindsay Milk Run. This 5km/10km event takes place on Sunday, July 16 and starts and finishes at the Lindsay Recreation Complex.

New this year is the addition of the KL21K Half Marathon presented in partnership with Jamie Schmale ,Member of Parliament Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock. The Half Marathon will begin in Cameron, travel along the Victoria Rail Trail connecting up with the Lindsay Milk Run 10k route in Lindsay and finishing at the Lindsay Recreation Complex.

Volunteers are required from approximately 6am to 11:30am to assist with a variety of duties including course marshalling, registration, water stations, food distribution, set up and tear down.

This is an opportunity for community members of all ages to get involved in a fun-filled community tradition. This is an opportunity for students to gain valuable community service hours.

All volunteers will receive a certificate acknowledging their volunteer hour contributions, a Milk Run T-Shirt, refreshments, ice cream and a chance to be part of this successful community event.

DUCK, DUCK, GOOSE

Kawartha Conservation is looking for volunteers to assist in a Citizen Science Project in the Bobcaygeon Beach Park area this summer (June to September).

They’re looking for citizens to document goose and other waterfowl numbers within the beach area during specific times of the day, including when the beach water fountain is on and when the fountain is off in addition to some areas upstream of the beach. Full training and scheduling will be provided.

The Citizen Science Project is a joint E.coli sourcing project with the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit that will begin in June, 2017.

“The summer will be less humid than usual [in these areas],” AccuWeather Canadian Weather Expert Brett Anderson said. This is due to cold fronts passing through the region on a regular basis, limiting the frequency that AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures will reach dangerous levels.

The fronts will also bring many opportunities for thunderstorms, some of which may be severe.

“There is the potential for a few severe thunderstorm outbreaks in Ontario, especially from July into mid-August,” Anderson said.

This includes major cities such as Ottawa and Windsor, Ontario.

1. Heating: How is your new home/cottage heated? Wood? Oil? Propane?

Electric? Each of these potential options can greatly impact the cost of ownership in heating your home. Additionally, heating can really effect your insurance options all together. For instance, wood stoves require specific inspections, and older oil tanks may not even qualify to be insured at all.

2. Rental: Are you thinking about renting your cottage to supplement the cost of ownership? It is a great idea, in theory. On a seasonal policy many insurance companies will allow for an occasional rental, but if it your intention to rent for even more than two weeks out of the season you might be required for additional coverage, or be required to insure it as a rental property all together. 3. Area Services: Most of the Kawarthas are considered rural. A question you will be asked for insurance purposes, is if your property is in range of a fire department. Your insurance premium could increase if you are not within the acceptable boundaries; check with your realtor, or a local brokerage (like us, here at Stewart Morrison Insurance) for this information.

4. Year Round or Seasonal: Are you planning on using your property year round? A four season cottage can be eligible for additional extended coverages, whereas traditional summer properties may only qualify for more limited policies.

5. Accessibility: The Kawarthas are obviously known for our lakes; and some properties are only accessible by water. The gorgeous seclusion of being on an island, can come at a cost to your premiums, and how and what you may be covered for. However, water isn't the only obstacle when you are thinking accessibility. There are many RV parks that completely shut down for the winter months, and some that only allow access by ATV or Snowmobile (we insure all three btw). If you are lucky enough to find and own a property that has peaceful seclusion, look into how you can access it year round and ask us how that affects your insurance.

6. Alarm System: Thankfully, the alarm system we are referring to isn't primarily for theft (though, a great silver lining), we are fortunate to boast a very low crime rate here in the Kawartha Lakes. The new alarm systems out there, can be your first response to that burst pipe I mentioned earlier. Alerts can be set to tell you a fantastic amount of information if you do not live near your second home, or cottage.

Flood, fire, temperature and break-ins can be dealt with much faster than finding the damage in the spring. These systems also lower your insurance premium, so why not!

Coboconk Fresh Water Summit Festival

In honour of Canada’s 150th Anniversary, the 9th annual Fresh Water Summit Festival in Coboconk will be held on Friday, June 30 and Saturday, July 1, Canada Day!

We have some new highlights planned for this year and some old favourites – including live music, fun (and free!) activities for the kids, a fantastic water ski show, fireworks Saturday night at Norland’s Ward Park and lots more.

The Fresh Water Summit Festival celebrates Balsam Lake at the Coboconk wharf - a nationally significant body of water. In 2009, the wharf in Coboconk was officially recognized as Canada’s highest body of fresh water from which one can circumnavigate the world by seaworthy vessel, reaching all four oceans by boat without ever having to travel on land. There is a fun photo-op located at the wharf that people can visit all year long.

The site has considerable historic importance for Canada, an area that was navigated and portaged by First Nations people for centuries, as well as by Samuel de Champlain in the 17th century. The surface is 256.5 metres above sea level, nearly half as high as the CN Tower.

So mark your calendars to spend Canada’s 150th with us in Coboconk – we look forward to seeing you!

Would you hand over 4 hours of your spare time to get a ticket to the Legendary Downchild Blues Band concert on June 10? If you’re like me, you’d volunteer for 4 hours just to get the free t-shirt!

The Unlock the Summer committee is in need of volunteers for the June 10 event in Bobcaygeon that includes family activities at the locks, music, sales and food. Oh, and there is the biggest concert of the season in Bobcaygeon that night. The Legendary Downchild Blues Band will be performing at the Bobcaygeon Community Centre (arena) at 7pm.

There’s an information and sign-up meeting on Thursday, June 1 at 6pm at the Bobcaygeon Service Centre. The first 15 volunteers will receive a free ticket to the concert.They’re looking for folks who can do any number of jobs throughout the day, from answering questions from visitors to selling tickets to the concert.

Young people needing to add to their volunteer hours for high school are more than welcome.

CHAMBER BUILDING ON SUCCESS

New President of the Lindsay Chamber of Commerce, Mike Perry, says he wants to build on the successes of the work of the past Board and Past President Marlene Morrison-Nichols.

Last June, Marlene and Mike presented a new economic development initiative to Kawartha Lakes Council that could put COKL on the map as a destination of choice.

The philosophy behind the “Diversity and Inclusion” initiative is a simple “Golden Rule”; provide quality service to your customer by connecting with them to leave a lasting impression.

“This campaign was developed at the request of several of our member businesses who know that growing a customer base through diversity is the wave of the economic future,” noted Perry. Perry said the campaign would be promoted in Toronto and beyond, to make potential visitors aware of efforts and encourage them to come visit, dine and shop in our area.

The campaign has the unanimous approval of the COKL Council.

To bring action to the plan, the Lindsay Chamber will host Diversity Workshops focused on how local businesses can grow by welcoming people of all backgrounds. These Workshops are open to all organizations in Kawartha Lakes including

businesses, other Chambers of Commerce, Business Improvement Areas and the public.

“We need to be respectful of all people, including those different from ourselves,” says MorrisonNicholls. “It’s the right thing to do and it is good for business.”

The workshops will be held in Lindsay on June 7, September 14, November 16, and January 16, 2018.

The cost is $65 per employee per session ($55 for Chamber members).

CONCERTS DEMONSTRATE MUSICAL VERSATILITY

Local Quilters Add to National Effort: Every year, more than 200 quilt guilds across Canada work their magic for the Big Quilt Bee. The completed works of fabric art are donated to Ronald McDonald House charities. This year, the Lindsay Creative Quilting Guild outdid themselves by donating 37 quilts to the effort. The Canadian Quilters Association received more than 1,000 quilts from across the country.

The Wynne Provincial Government has been playing give and take with hydro since they took office. They removed the debt retirement charge and “handed out” a discount instead.

Now, they have introduced legislation that would, if passed, lower electricity bills by 25 per cent on average for all residential customers to provide significant rate relief and ensure greater fairness.

The proposed Fair Hydro Act, 2017 would result in lower electricity bills for all residential consumers and as many as half a million small businesses and farms, starting this summer.

Lower-income Ontarians and those living in eligible rural communities would receive even greater reductions, as much as 40 to 50 per cent. As part of this plan, rate increases for four years would be held to the rate of inflation.

These measures include the 8 percent rebate introduced in January and build on previously announced initiatives to deliver broad-based rate relief on all electricity bills. Taken together, these changes would deliver the single-largest reduction to electricity rates in the province’s history.

This rebate, though, would end. There are reports that rates will start to go up in 2022, starting at a 6.5 percent increase, reaching 10.5 percent in 2028. That will hit your wallet to the tune of an average of $215.

HOSPITAL STAFF FACE INCREASING VIOLENCE

Recent reports of violence against staff in hospitals across Canada show they can be a dangerous place for employees and, locally, it’s no different.

Numbers obtained by Kawartha 411 show staff at Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) and Lindsay’s Ross Memorial Hospital (RMH) are experiencing increasing levels of violence every year.

Reported violent incidents against staff at PRHC have almost tripled since 2014. In that year there were 92 reported actual, attempted and threatened incidents of violence against staff. In 2015 the number rose to 139 and 255 in 2016. The hospital says the majority of reported incidents take place within the Geriatric Assessment and Behavioural Unit and in the Mental Health & Addictions program.

In 2015/16, RMH tracked a total of 183 Code White or Silent Code White (violent or potentially violent) incidents. These took place in the Emergency Department, Continuing Care Unit, Mental Health Unit, Intensive Care Unit and on the Medical and Surgical Units according to numbers obtained from the hospital. This year (2016/17) the final numbers aren’t in yet but as of December, 172 violent incidents had been reported with three months still remaining in the fiscal year.

Hospital emergency departments and psychiatric wards are the most violent, according to research.

Studies show those most at risk are nurses and personal support workers who have the most direct contact with patients and their families. CUPE says all the Ontario Registered Practical Nurses and Personal Support Workers in attendance at a CUPE health care conference recently specifically focused on violence, said they have experienced workplace violence.

GOING TO THE DOGS

A few weeks ago, we heard a rumour of a resident who had taken his cats for a walk to the off-leash dog park in Lindsay.

His cats were on leashes, but, unfortunately for the cats and their owner, the dogs were not. So the dogs did what dogs do and chased the cats up a tree.

Officials with Kawartha Conservation stepped up to help the man rescue his cats, we were told.

So being the top-notch journalists that we are, we went to Kawartha Conservation to ask about the incident. After checking into it, John Chambers, the KC spokesperson told us it was true.

But, according to John, this serves as a wake-up call for feline pet owners. “Please don’t bring your cats to the off-leash dog park,” he told us.

Foster Homes Needed

The Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes (HSKL) has welcomed over 12 pregnant cats and 50 homeless kittens into its care since April.

Due to the high amount of attention and space that new mother cats and their kittens need, HSKL is asking the public to not only spay and neuter their cats, but to consider becoming a foster family.

By becoming a foster family, the HSKL can take in more mothers and kittens, instead of asking the public to be patient and keep the cats until space is made.

The HSKL’s foster families receive everything they need to provide for the mother and her kittens. No expenses are passed on to the foster families.

After serving Durham and The Kawartha Lakes for over 29 years, the importance of Private Mortgages has never been of greater need than in today’s financial climate.

A private mortgage is when an individual is willing to lend their money to you with your property as security. There must be some equity available to secure the funding. This is usually done by way of an appraisal on your property and the difference between the value and existing mortgages is the equity.

Advantages to a private mortgage are the simplicity of the process. If the equity is there, the funds will become available. Generally investors are not overly concerned with credit history or if this is a second or third property. Funds can be used for any purpose; like paying off loans and credit cards, vehicle purchase, home renovations or children’s tuition. Debt service does not come into play.

Disadvantages are that private mortgages always carry a higher interest rate, and terms are usually one or two years. Some (not all) investors take a fee for lending the money.

Private mortgages are ideal for clients who are self-employed and cannot prove income, or clients with credit or mortgage issues. For these clients this is often the best remedy for their requirements. It should be used as a stepping stone, where issues can be fixed over the next year or two, so you can then qualify for a prime institutional mortgage.

The fact that it has very few natural enemies, combined with the fact that native ash trees have limited resistance to attack, these insects have become a major problem very quickly. Typically, within six years of a woodlot infestation, more than 99% of the ash trees will have been attacked and killed. The prevalence and area infested by ash borer is expected to continue to expand, mostly through the movement of infested material such as firewood.

Trees affected by the ash borer become a hazard as they become weak, and because of this, it is recommended you get your ash trees inspected. If your trees have been infested, they may need to be removed to prevent further spread of disease. However, trees can also be injected with insecticides to protect them from being attacked by the ash borer. Our company supervisors are more than happy to take a look at any questionable trees and make suggestions to mitigate the infestation.

A class of Grade 8 students at Scott Young Public School in Omemee received more than 10 hours of training in bicycle safety and handling earlier this month.

The 30 boys and girls were participating in the Level 3: Core Cycling Skills program developed by Cycling Canada and delivered by a team of certified Can-Bike instructors affiliated with the local Kawartha Cycling Club.

All students received a Can-Bike certificate upon successful completion of the course.

“The greatest part for all was the time spent outdoors cycling in the community and doing various drills to build confidence and enhance biking skills,” said André Quesnel, the class teacher and one of the principal organizers of the event. “The [instructors] are to be commended for their knowledge, passion and

In March of 2000, Trish Peter was 17 years old when she was diagnosed with Osteo Sarcoma, the same type of cancer Terry Fox had. Living in Little Britain at the time, she had to travel to hospitals in Toronto for treatments on a regular basis. She was separated from her family while they struggled to pay travel costs and medical bills. Her parents were on a leave of absence from work to be with her.

In May of 2004, two months before Trish lost her battle with cancer, the members of the community organized a very successful 12-kilometre Walk-a-Thon to help the family with their financial burden.

It was her wish that the event be carried on every year to assist other local families in a similar situation.

This, in addition to other events throughout the year, raise funds that assist families in the Kawartha Lakes with a sick or seriously injured child between the ages of 17 and 25.

This year’s 14th Annual Walk-a-Thon, Trish’s Walk, will be held at Victoria Park in Lindsay on Saturday, June 3. You can walk, bike or run either a 5km or 10km route. Registration, rain or shine, is at 9am. The walk starts at 10am.

BAD NEWS/GOOD NEWS Stealing from the dump?

“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” is an old adage that may have lost its meaning in today’s society.

I can’t help but remember the Mother’s Day I received a lamp -- from the dump! It didn’t work and the cord was missing but it looked great. My daughter and her father used to love rummaging through the dump, finding “treasures” and bringing them home. Sometimes they would sell them; other times they would give them as gifts.

Approximately 67.2% of Canada’s garbage is disposed of in a landfill. Canada has over 10,000 landfill sites, generating approximately 31 million tonnes of garbage a year, according to the Township of Langley BC.

Plastic and glass take one million years to break down naturally- one million years. Aluminum cans take about 500 years.

So I was surprised to hear from a Fenelon Falls resident that they were threatened with charges for removing a piece of plywood from the landfill.

Apparently it was caught on video surveillance -- even at the dump we are being watched. But I digress.

tolerance for scavenging.” You would think that officials would be happy to have things removed from the landfill and reused. The Ministry of Environment regulates that consumers cannot remove other people’s waste from the landfill. They say it’s a safety and liability issue for the City.

In Barrie, a 74-year-old man was charged with theft after picking up two drills from a waste bin.

The world has a problem with what to do with the enormous amount of garbage we produce and municipalities are charging people who want to reuse some of that garbage. Surely there are better things police could be doing with their time. (Not that I’m not blaming police, they must go where they are called.)

The good news is, many municipalities, Kawartha Lakes included, have set up a re-use area at the landfill for items that they feel could be repurposed. This helps to divert some usable items from the landfill but you have to “buy” it.

For a “small fee” you can now take home someone else’s garbage.

FAMILY FUN AND MUSIC AT LINDSAY’S CANADA DAY

Local indie-pop band The Kents will be headlining for a hometown crowd at Lindsay Canada Day at Wilson Fields on July 1 in a free celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday.

In 2017, Parks Canada is giving boaters a lovely Canada 150 gift of free lockage along the Trent-Severn Waterway. So that means we’ll probably be seeing more boaters through our towns throughout the season.

In 2016, Bobcaygeon’s Lock 32 was the busiest, with 7,849 vessels travelling through. Lock 31 in Buckhorn was the second busiest, seeing 7,694 vessels through the lock.

Most of the infrastructure repairs done by Parks Canada and the TSW have been completed for the season.

ANGLERS ARRIVE FOR ANNUAL TOURNEY

Sturgeon Lake will be teeming with anglers on May 26, 27 and 28th for the 37th Annual Canada/US Walleye Tournament. But it’s not just about the fish.

If you’re in the market for some new tackle, there’s a Tackle Swap Meet at the Bobcaygeon Arena on Saturday morning starting at 10am.

There’s also a tradeshow at the Bobcaygeon arena for the entire weekend – Friday it opens at 5, Saturday and Sunday 10 until 6. If you’re a fishing fan, you’ll want to be there between 2 and 4:30 on Sunday for the Canada/US Walleye Tournament weigh-in.

New this year as part of the tournament, in keeping with the “Family, Fun, Fishing” theme, the organizers are hosting a giving back program to local children and women who would like to get involved with sportfishing in our area, but don’t know how – or don’t have the equipment to do it.

The tourney anglers are being asked to donate gently used rods, reels and tackle when they register on Friday night. For each donation, the angler will receive a ticket for a draw prize of $300. Those donations

could kick start a rewarding fishing experience for the youth and women of this area.

Denise S. Davy is involved with this year’s tournament. She will be speaking, educating and demonstrating casting techniques out on our docks and will coordinate the dispersal of the fishing equipment.

Denise works with Bronson & Bronson, Fishbum, Dunamis Rods, Baitcloud and CFN – The Canadian Fishing Network!

The Canada/US Walleye Tournament organizers are committed to providing a safe environment for the fish caught during the tournament. There is extensive information posted on their website to ensure anglers are aware of the best way to handle the fish in this catch-and-release event.

At 6:30 to 7:30 in the morning on May 27 and 28, the 280 fishermen and women competing in the 37th Annual Canada/US Walleye tournament will be taking off from Little Bob Channel under the bridge at County Road 24.

We’d like you to join us on the bridge to wave them off! Our great Walleye mascot fish will be there, too.

We would appreciate the community to show their support to these anglers. These competitors will spend 3 to 7 days in our area. They bring a lot of income to Bobcaygeon so it would be great if we could have a large contingency waving to them as they leave for their day. About 40 of us did this last tournament and the anglers really appreciated it, some even took pictures of us as we were taking their photos!

Flooding events are on the increase across the country and there is a call to action to find solutions.

Many municipalities are trying to replace old drainage systems with larger culverts to help mitigate some of the impact of these increasing number of rain/flooding events.

Rain, Rain Go Away

Hopefully by the time you read this, all the rain that caused flooding and less than desirable moods will be replaced by warm, sunny climes and smiles.

But it’s been a wild spring for water. A two-week rain event at the end of April and beginning of May that caused water levels to rise hit our neighbours to the north a little harder than us. On May 6, in Minden, Reeve Brent Devolin announced a State of Emergency due to flooding.

This was the third flood in 5 years, and the second state of emergency declared within that timeframe.

Flooding happens when the already saturated land cannot absorb any more water. When it rains, the water has nowhere to go but to a body of water, and if you are in a low-lying area you could be impacted.

Those living along the Burnt River have had their share of water woes. In 2013, residents and cottager were heavily impacted when the River rose more than 6 metres.

This spring, at the crest on May 9, the water had gone up 5.6 metres. Officials are still watching those levels, although at press time, the flood warning for the Burnt River had been cancelled by Kawartha Conservation.

Officials said that as of May 10, the southern Kawartha Lakes were still rising. Water levels in large Kawartha Lakes, including Balsam, Cameron, Sturgeon and Pigeon lakes were above the full navigation levels.

The dams along the Trent Severn Waterway are seen to be the way of maintaining water levels, but with the

The Craft Show is wheelchair accessible and there is ample free parking available. A shuttle bus runs continuously from the upper parking lot to the Community Centre. The entire show is under cover, so regardless of the weather, you can browse in comfort.

The Craft Show is an annual fund raising event for the non-profit, Buckhorn Community Centre and is run by many Volunteers who build the exhibitor booths, man admission booths, park cars, direct traffic and serve in the Snack Bar.

GOLF TOURNEY FOR BCC

The Buckhorn Community Centre is hosting their annual golf tournament on Thursday, June 1.

Teams of four are invited to participate at the Quarry Golf Club in Ennismore. For only $135 per player ($125 for BCC members), you’ll get 18 holes of golf with a cart, dinner and a chance to win some prizes. There will be a 4-person best ball scramble as well.

DOG-GONE TERRIFIC

When you think of Dog Guides, most of us think about those who help out the visually impaired. But there’s more to the movement of Dog Guides than that.

Since 1983, Lions Foundation of Canada has built the capacity of their Dog Guides to provide support in six key areas: • Canine Vision Dog Guides for people who are blind or visually impaired • Hearing Ear Dog Guides for people who are deaf or hard of hearing • Service Dog Guides for people who have a physical disability • Seizure Response Dog Guides for people who have epilepsy • Autism Assistance Dog Guides for children who have autism spectrum disorder • Diabetic Alert Dog Guides for people who have Type 1 diabetes with hypoglycemic unawareness.

To date, the organization has matched Dog Guides with more than 2,500 Canadians from every province and territory.

But there is, as always, a cost to helping out. A Dog Guide costs approximately $25,000 to raise and train but none of that cost is passed on to qualifying applicants.

The Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides is a national fundraiser held in over 240 communities across Canada.

To date, as a corporate sponsor of the organization, Pet Valu has raised more than $400,000 to help the Dog Guide Program.

This year’s walk organized by the Fenelon Falls &

District Lion’s Club is Saturday, May 27 and supported

by Pet Valu in Bobcaygeon. Registration, which is free, is at 9am, followed by the 45- to 60-minute walk at 10am.

Light refreshments for participants and any four-legged friends will be provided. The walk kicks off at the Lion’s Den, behind the Fenelon Falls Community Centre on Veteran’s Way.

Pledge forms can be picked up at the Pet Valu or Three Islands Veterinary Clinic in Bobcaygeon or Sobey’s, the Post Office or Library in Fenelon Falls.

You can also get a pledge form when you register. One hundred percent of the funds you raise will go towards the cause.

Ken Le Masurier, a member of the Fenelon Falls & District Lion’s Club is encouraging the community to come out and support the dogs. “We were able to get a dog for a young fellow with autism in Hickory Beach recently. He’s bonded with his dog and is doing really well.”

Amber Purdy’s Hair-A-Thon to raise money for Hike for Hospice was a tremendous success.

Amber raised $300 and, as a team participating in the hike, they raised $3,150, just $200 short of the top fundraising team.

It’s Easy Being Green The Celebration Continues

Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m still in the Earth Day zone. It’s kind of my jam!

But after all of the litter is collected, the trees planted, the environmental posts on social media die down and the world goes back to daily lives that may or may not include stewardship activities and ”green” tendencies, I wonder what is the next step I can take in my daily life that has a positive impact on the environment?

What I have found is that in most cases every “green” habit that I commit to saves me money and improves my health. For example, one year I started buying in bulk in reusable jars. Buying in bulk saved

me money, and is healthier because I buy more ingredients and less packaged food.

Here’s another example: one year, I committed to eating less animal products. This saved me money because beans and legumes are cheaper than meat and dairy products, and eating more plant-based meals is good for my health.

One year I ditched disposable products. This saved me money because I only have to buy something once and reuse it, not buy it over and over again just to toss it out. This also improves my health, well, because needing less money is good for reducing stress.

I have been on this journey for a long time and some of these ideas seemed pretty ‘out there’ when I first heard them. But as I gave them a shot and stuck to them, they have become part of my daily life.

This year, I will commit to not using my car for anything that I have to do in town. I have a bike with a trailer, a wagon and my kids have bikes. I also have feet, although this does pose a challenge to me. I have a 2- and 4-year old who are amazed by every sight and sound and take 30 minutes to walk a block. And, not naming names, but one who walks a block and just really cannot go on because of severe leg pain and tiredness and it is “just too far.”

If I commit to it for a trial period, it will become routine. It will also save me money on gas, and I will get more exercise and fresh air. Both good for my emotional, and physical health.

SPRING GARDENING WORKSHOP

Kawartha Lakes Public Library, in partnership with the Lindsay & District Master Gardeners once again presents a spring gardening workshop to kick off the gardening season.

“An Introduction to Home Vegetable & Herb Gardening” will be held at the Lindsay Branch Library on Saturday, May 20 from 10:15am to 11:30am.

The workshop, which covers gardening basics including why grow your own, where to grow, what to grow, and how to grow is intended for gardening novices but will also serve as a useful refresher for

more experienced gardeners. Master Gardeners Christine Halbot and Jack Kyle will be on hand to answer your questions.

MARIPOSA DAIRY OPENS NEW FACILITY

Local, provincial and federal officials, along with 250 invited guests joined the staff and the owners of Mariposa Dairy to celebrate the completion of their new, state-of-the-art, cheese making facility.

Mariposa Dairy moved from the farmstead in a 800-sq. ft. building to the St. David facility of 22,000 sq. ft. in 2007 and now to this new facility at 201 St. George Street of 50,000 sq. ft.

Mariposa Dairy was established in 1989 by Bruce and Sharon VandenBerg. “I was looking for a way to be at home with our children,” said Sharon. “It grew out of control! It started with just the two of us and 20,000 litres of goat milk to a staff of 95 and 17 million litres of goat milk.”

Mariposa Dairy has partnered with Gaylea Foods (they draw from 120+ goat dairies) and Finica Food Specialties (part of the Gellert Group). I watched the 13 Reasons Why – Beyond the Reasons, a 30-minute ‘explanation’ including interviews with the program’s writers; the author of the book, Jay Asher; the actors and actresses whose character portrayals were so real I felt like I was spying on their lives; and, most importantly, psychological experts. They described the importance of the 13-episode series, the necessity of communicating messages of hope and the need to open up the conversation about issues teens can experience.

I think this program is the must-see for any family with teenagers. I don’t know how my parents would have reacted to it, or if they would have sat with us to watch it. But times were different when I was a teen.

There were no computers or cell phones to spread vicious rumours or reality programs on TV that drove unrealistic expectations.

I just found out there is a Season 2 of 13 Reasons Why in the works. Hopefully, it will continue the story of how Hannah’s friends and family come to terms with her death. Because those who are left behind have a difficult road to healing, and their messages are important, too.

High school students are responding to the series in a more positive way, entering the conversation about suicide with their own “13 Reasons Why Not.” There are several blogs available online and, in one high school in Michigan, students share their reasons

during the morning announcements.

Their move to support one another and reach out to those they don’t know who are in the “dark place” is inspirational. Our future world is in good hands.

FENELON FALLS SOBEY’S TO SELL BEER

The province says the criteria were set to ensure fairness and geographic distribution. Ultimately, beer and cider will be available in up to 450 grocery stores, including up to 300 that will also sell wine.

The provincial government has announced that 76 new independent and large grocery stores have been authorized to sell beer and cider. That’s in addition to the 130 stores currently able to sell beer and cider including 70 who can also well wine.

The Sobey’s in Fenelon Falls is one of the new stores announced, in addition to the WalMart on Chemong Road in Peterborough.

In January, The Municipality of Trent Lakes launched a mandatory Clear Garbage Bag Program for all of its transfer stations. The idea was to encourage the use of the recycling, composting and hazardous waste programs, and to keep those bad things out of the waste stream.

Since the launch of the program, some of the attendants at the various transfer stations in the municipality have had to put up with some abuse from those not respecting the new policy. Every time I go to the Buckhorn transfer station, I am asked politely by the attendant to take a look in the clear bag in my trunk. I have no problem with that … I have nothing to hide.

But I’ve heard that there are some who object to this and, when that happens, the attendant has to be more forceful. They are just doing their job and have no time for argument about the contents of your garbage.

These are the rules … garbage that has not been put into a clear bag, that visibly contains more than 20% recyclables (or any Blue Box material) or that contains any hazardous materials will not be accepted.

The clear bag program seems to be working, too.

Total garbage at the transfer stations in Trent Lakes was reduced by about 64 tonnes in April, compared with April 2016. And, the total from January to April this year was an astounding 164 tonnes less than last year.

Keep on recycling, folks!

On another garbage note … it has come to my attention that there’s been an increase in waste materials thrown onto the roadsides, left at clothing drop-off sites and just generally dispersed into ditches.

I don’t know if that’s because of the clear bag policy or just “because.” Please keep our environment clean.

The critters will thank you.

STOP AND SMELL THE LILACS

If you’re a lover of lilacs, there’s a special place that will make your heart sing. It’s the Lilac Gardens of Lindsay and they’re holding an “open house” May 26 to 28 from 10am to 4pm daily.

Over the last 20 years, a group of dedicated citizens in Lindsay has planted beautiful lilacs of all colour categories, white to magenta, in the town’s Logie Street Park. There are now nearly 600 shrubs. New ones are planted each year, affordable through the sale of specially acquired lilacs sold to the public.

Our town is known for its abundance of lilacs in public places as well in lilac lovers’ home gardens. The Lilac Garden has become known through our May lilac festival/open houses and lilac sales, and through our memory walk program where over 130 shrubs have been dedicated in honour of loved ones or special events.

The Trans Canada Trail, completed in 2010, has given easy access to the Lilac Gardens to run, cycle or stroll, and has become popular with the new homeowners adjacent to the park.

Special events suitable for all ages are planned for Saturday, May 26 and Sunday, May 27, featuring a tea garden, art in the park, entertainment and demonstrations. Members will be on hand for tours around the lilacs daily, as well.

Starting later this year, Logie Street Park will undergo major improvements by the City of Kawartha Lakes for year-round community use, providing water, power and washrooms. We will have to move some of the lilacs to

new locations to facilitate the changes and we’d like to tell donors, or their families, the progress of the work being done.

ENVIRONMENT DAY IN BUCKHORN

Just in time for spring cleaning, Peterborough County is holding an Environment Day at the Buckhorn Transfer station on Saturday, June 11. Those with a valid waste pass can bring in the following additional items for recycling: • Styrofoam Pieces – but no plates, cups, meat trays or insulation • Hard Cover Books - they’ll remove the covers • Mattresses - $11 each

You can also bring a bucket to get a compost sample.

During Household Hazardous Waste hours, you can bring in household hazardous waste (old paint cans with paint still in them), batteries, and large quantities of cooking or motor oil; CDs/DVDs, VHS and audio cassettes; and child car seats.

All summer, you can bring in electronics (like that old TV or lamp) and hard, bulky plastic items.

GROUND BROKEN FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECT

An $8-million affordable housing project in Lindsay is now underway.

The project, which consists of 24 onebedroom apartments, is aimed at ending long-term homelessness. The housing will accommodate some of the most vulnerable homeless individuals in the community.

Mayor Andy Letham commented, “Affordable housing must be the cornerstone of any poverty reduction plan. This project is one of the ways that, together with our federal and provincial partners, we’re executing a housing strategy to support our residents.

We recognize that housing stability benefits our whole community.”

Occupancy is expected by July, 2018. The complex will be managed by KLH Housing.

The two story building will also house the City’s Human Services offices, which are currently at 322 Kent Street in Lindsay. The new location will be more convenient for many clients who access social and housing support services and will remove the rental costs currently associated with this department.

Canada takes its place in outer space

Canada’s first astronomers weren’t called Canadians. They were the Native peoples. For centuries they had been reading the northern skies to learn when to plant and when to harvest their crops.

Like the Greeks and Romans their legends and history were written in the constellations they perceived in the star patterns above.

The first Canadian contributor to astronomy was Andrew Elvins, who founded the Royal Canadian Astronomical Society in 1868. The Society eventually launched a comprehensive book on the night sky and has updated it on a yearly basis. Today, the 300+ page manual is used by amateur and professional astronomers around the world.

Leaping a few dozen decades ahead we were blessed with Dr. Helen Sawyer Hogg. Helen was the wife of Dr. Frank Hogg who headed up the David Dunlap Observatory in what is now known as Richmond Hill.

Helen had studied under, and eventually worked with, renowned astronomer Harlow Shapely. Both were experts on globular star clusters, but Helen also wrote an astronomy column for the Toronto Star.

Her outreach work through her newspaper column and her group sessions at the Dunlap Observatory brought hundreds of young Canadians closer to the stars. Her book “The Stars Belong to Everyone” is still available.

No list of Canadian contributions to space exploration would be complete without mentioning The Canadarms – 1 and 2, built by Spar Aerospace near Toronto. Canada’s additions to the International Space Station made external repairs, loading cargo, capturing and repairing satellites possible. The arms also firmly established Canada as a world leader in robotics.

Roberta Bondar had the honour of becoming the second Canadian in space (Marc Garneau was the first) and Canada’s first woman in space. In 1992 she lifted off on the Discovery Space Shuttle and spent eight days orbiting the Earth. During that time she was the

prime payload specialist and used her photographic skills imaging Earth from space.

Once back on the ground, she went on to promote women in science and become Chancellor of Trent University. She also is an Officer in the Order of Canada and holds 22 honourary degrees from various institutions around the world.

Astronaut Chris Hadfield was not only the first Canadian to walk in space and live aboard the International Space Station (ISS), but also the first Canuck to act as its Commander.

Widely remembered for his numerous “Tweets” from the ISS and a litany of fascinating videos such as how to clip your fingernails in minus gravity, make a peanut butter and honey sandwich, Hadfield really did bring outer space down to Earth and helped interest and educate thousands in space travel.

His rendition of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” sung from the ISS will remain a classic along with his book “An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth”.

Canada has been a proud contributor in mankind’s exploration of outer space via our astronauts and our inventions. The future is definitely looking up.

Managing Aquatic Plants

Trent Matters, along with Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority, Parks Canada (Trent Severn Waterway) and Kawartha Conservation will be hosting a free two-hour workshop on dealing with excess

aquatic plants on Saturday, June 10 at the Bolsover Community Centre.

“Canal and Mitchell lakes, in particular, have been identified as lakes experiencing significant impacts from excessive aquatic vegetation,” explained Trent Matters’ Frank Corker. “We wanted to bring together a group of knowledgeable organizations to provide information to waterfront property owners.”

Trent Severn Waterway, Parks Canada staff will be on hand to assist local property owners complete permit applications for plant control efforts they plan to complete in 2017.

“We know that the impact of excessive aquatic vegetation can include blockage of watercrafts to navigation channels, impairment of recreational opportunities and lowered property values,” said Mr. Corker. “It is important to remember that aquatic plants play an important role in lake ecology, so it is imperative that we follow best management practices to avoid any negative effects to overall lake health.”

The Managing Aquatic Plants Workshop is for any lakefront property owner within the Trent Severn Waterway who would like to learn more about dealing with excess aquatic plants and take advantage of filling out the permit applications with Parks Canada staff on site.

The workshop will be held from 1:30 to 3:30pm at the Bolsover Community Centre, 16 Bolsover Road.

takes the simple idea of sending items to soldiers to a new level. When Canada’s involvement in the war in Afghanistan ended, Yellow Ribbon Boxes continued to be sent to soldiers serving in Kuwait, Ukraine, Poland, and to a Medical Team in Iraq. To date, almost 1,200 boxes have been received by those Canadians fighting for others.

Cash donations are collected in decorated cans throughout Buckhorn and Lakefield. Donors pick up a yellow ribbon lapel pin in exchange for their donation. Darlene then goes shopping for items to put a smile on a soldier’s face.

Darlene says she’s hoping to send off some great Canada gear to help the soldiers celebrate the country’s 150th birthday July 1. “We want them to feel like we’re standing with them, especially on Canada Day. We’re sending a lot of red and white to show other nations how proud we are to be Canadian!” She says the Campaign will run as long as there are soldiers stationed overseas.

Boxes will be sent to soldiers in Egypt on or before June 13. They would like to include these “requested items” so they’re asking for our help.

Here’s a list of those items: MIO (water enhancer), drink crystals, blank ‘greeting’ cards, trail mix, nuts, puzzle books, oatmeal packages, assorted teas, Nutella, gum, m & m’s, ju jubes, sours, licorice, granola bars, beef jerky, hot rods, ‘crunchy’ Kraft peanut butter, micro popcorn (Orville), small pkg. Kleenex, hand lotion, sun screen, lip balm, Tim Horton’s Coffee, and K Cups, 3 in 1 coffee. People Magazines, novels, After Bite, Fly Traps, and lots of jumbo “freezies”. Since the temperature will be in the 40s, chocolate bars are not recommended.

You can drop off your donations at the Buckhorn Community Centre and the BDTA Welcome Centre in Buckhorn as well as The Kawartha Promoter or the Legion in Bobcaygeon. Please write “Soldier” on your bag/donation.

Health & Wellness ASTHMA SOCIETY SUPPORTS DRUG PROGRAM

On April 27, the Ontario Government announced its 2017 budget that contained various points of interest for members of the asthma community. Significant investments in health care included a $345 million dollar increase in hospital funding and an overall $7 billion increase in health care funding over the next three years.

The most significant initiative for the asthma community is the Government’s introduction of free prescription drug coverage for all Ontario children and adults younger than 25, regardless of family and individual income. This policy, the first of its kind in Canada, will make life more affordable for Ontario families and ensure that young adults have access to the drugs they need.

Vanessa Foran, President & CEO of the Asthma Society of Canada says, “No Canadian should have to sacrifice their health because of an inability to afford their prescribed medications.”

Access to Medicines is a key policy priority for the Asthma Society of Canada, believing that all Canadians should have equitable and timely access to prescription medications based on the best possible health outcomes, rather than ability to pay.

The Central East LHIN is pleased to announce that Dr. Ilan Fischler, Physician-in-Chief, Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores) has taken on the role of Mental Health and Addictions Physician Lead for the Central East LHIN.

Since accepting the one year appointment, Dr. Fischler has been working with members of the Central East LHIN Mental Health and Addictions (MHA) Strategic Aim Coordinating Council and other health service providers. Their goal is to implement improvements in the delivery of child and adolescent hospital-based mental health services, develop a local Opioid Strategy and improve the integration of mental health and addiction services with Primary Care.

PAINKILLERS LINKED TO HEARING LOSS IN WOMEN

Regular readers of this column know that one of the best ways to avoid hearing loss is to reduce exposure to loud noise. Now, new research suggests that prolonged use of certain painkillers is also linked to hearing loss in women. While the magnitude of the hearing loss uncovered by researchers may be modest, the use of painkillers is sufficiently widespread to warrant a warning. An analysis of data involving 55,850 women found the risk of hearing loss to be modestly higher among women who use acetaminophen (Tylenol) or non-steroidal inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen sodium) for six years or more than their counterparts who used these painkillers for a year or less.

OPP MAKES GREAT STRIDES

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has made significant strides in the first year of implementing the OPP Mental Health Strategy: Our People, Our Communities.

The strategy, released in December 2015, is a comprehensive and integrated approach to improving the response to the mental health needs of our people and the individuals in the communities they serve.

The OPP Mental Health Strategy has two related but distinct components - Supporting Our People: Healthy Workforce and Supporting Our Communities: Police Interactions with People with Mental Health Issues.

“The goal of the strategy is to mitigate risk, to reduce harm and victimization and to improve outcomes for people with mental health issues whether they are members of the OPP or members of our communities,” Commissioner J.V.N. (Vince) Hawkes said.

Some of the notable achievements over the last year in Supporting Our People include delivering mental health awareness and resiliency training to more than 6,900 members and increasing access to the OPP Critical Incident Stress Response Team/Peer Support Program.

Advances in Supporting Our Communities include an increase in early referrals to community support services for those with mental health issues; the introduction of a tool to aid officers in communicating more effectively and consistently with medical professionals; and more than 6,000 frontline members completed mental health-specific de-escalation training.

CENSUS SHOWS MORE SENIORS

Canada’s population has increased tenfold since Confederation. The count, for Census 2016, shows more than 35 million people reported living in Canada, with a pattern of population growth across the country.

Ontario remained, by far, the most populous province in Canada with 13.4 million people calling it home in 2016, representing just over 38 percent of the Canadian population.

Some of the most interesting statistics from the 2016 census revolve around the demographics of the population across Canada.

• There are more seniors (5.9 million) than children (5.8 million), the first time that has happened.

• There was an increase of 20 percent in the number of seniors, the biggest increase in 70 years.

• Census revealed an increase of 41.3 percent in Canadians 100 years or older, the fastest growing age group. In 2016, there were 8,230 Canadians over the age of 100 and five times more women than men.

• By 2061, experts project there will be 12 million seniors to 8 million children.

The province of Ontario showed a growth of 4.6 percent over 2011 to almost 13.5 million people.

In the City of Kawartha Lakes, there was a 3 percent population increase to 75,423. Sixty-one percent of those were between the ages of 15 and 64.

Those aged 65 or more accounted for 25.3 percent.

The Municipality of Trent Lakes outperformed the province for population growth, recording a 5.3 percent population increase to 5,397 over 2011.

Those 15 to 64 years of age account for 60.3 percent of the population of the area.

Peterborough County, meanwhile, recorded a 2.5 percent population growth to just over 138,000.

Statistics Canada will be releasing 2016 Census results throughout the year.

Keeping It In the Family

Ah, summertime at the cottage. Families come together to enjoy the long, hot days and cool campfire evenings. Memories are made and cherished. Everything is perfect until the parents begin to get elderly and keeping the cottage in the family seems more uncertain.

According to Peter Lillico, a Peterborough lawyer, law lecturer and author with over 35 years experience in estate planning and cottage succession, “a family’s cottage becomes another family’s cottage for several reasons, but in two main categories: financial and family.”

As parents retire, the financial costs of maintaining two residences can become prohibitive. Children also resist the expenses of taking over the cottage as there are so many other demands for their money. And, of course, everyone worries about Capital Gains tax imposition following the death of parents.

Cottage ownership is not only costly but carries with it many other responsibilities. Often children are not interested in investing the time or sharing those responsibilities with other siblings. Friction between siblings is often inevitable, when some children are prepared to incur the costs and responsibilities where others are not.

“Many parents just assume/hope that if they leave the cottage to all of their children, everything will work out,” says Lillico. “Sometimes this is true, but sooner or later financial challenges or personal differences will arise. Without prior planning and provision for these, the dynamics break down and the For Sale signs go up.”

Lillico has some good advice for families in this situation of the cottage succession dilemma. “Do professional succession planning in advance, involving the children, ensuring that only those who are motivated and willing to work together become the new owners.

Develop a Cottage Sharing Agreement to provide a secure structure for shared ownership.”

Once a cottage succession plan is determined, the provisions in the Will should reflect that. If, for example, one child lives out of province and has no interest in the family cottage, then he or she should be compensated financially in the Will.

FREE POLE WALKING

The popular weekly Nordic Pole Walking sessions offered by the Community Care Health & Care Network have resumed for the spring and summer in Lindsay and Bobcaygeon.

Free pole walking is held on Mondays at 9:30am from the Wilderness Trail in Bobcaygeon, and on Fridays at 9am from the locks in Lindsay, using the Rotary Trail (holidays excepted).

The groups are led by certified instructors and poles for participants who do not have their own are available on a limited basis.

Community Care has offered Nordic Pole Walking programs for several years. The activity has been shown to burn much more energy than normal walking, it uses 90 percent of the body’s muscles, is a low-impact exercise and a great social activity.

People interested in taking part in the weekly sessions should register by contacting Community Care’s Health Promotion Co-ordinator Melinda Jayne Gilmour at 705-324-7323 ext 301, or e-mail at mgilmour@ccckl.ca.
