I don’t often talk about politics with friends because it usually leads to some sort of disagreement. We are all entitled to our opinions, especially when it comes to politics and religion. But there are some political issues that, given the state of affairs in Ontario at the moment, many people can agree on. Heading into the election on June 7, Ontarians have a huge choice to make. Whether you love her or hate her, Premier Kathleen Wynne was dealt a losing hand from day one. She had to try to make amends with teachers who were striking; she was dropped into the Hydro One debacle left over from previous governments; she had to make sense of a healthcare system long broken; and a myriad of other problems that her

predecessors – Liberals, Conservatives and NDP – had left in their wake. It’s so easy to make promises during a campaign and take shots at other candidates who have different ideas on how to spend our precious tax dollars. When one candidate came to my door (which is rare in my rural area), there wasn’t talk about what issues were important to me or how their party was going to “fix the problems” created by the current government. It was about the problems the current government had created and how we shouldn’t vote for them again. Experts say after the loss of a loved one, you shouldn’t make any big decisions for about a year. Unfortunately, those experts didn’t count on a provincial election so soon after for me.

An entertaining time was had by all in the visitors’ gallery as the pre-election posturing that began last meeting was in full bloom on May 22. Councillors planning on running again made sure their voices were heard, councillors who seldom speak put in appearances, and Mayor Letham’s growing anger at councillors slow rolling issues pertaining to development was on full display.

Old Gaol Museum

A deputation was heard from the Old Gaol Museum in Lindsay requesting the City’s assistance to get them through their 2018 operating year. A request was made for $12,500 to pay the heat and hydro, plow the snow, cut the grass and maintain the parking lot for the remainder of 2018. An additional request was made for $2,500 to cover the insurance for the half million dollar collection the museum maintains. Council heard that the Museum Director, who suddenly resigned, had not done any of the grant applications for the 2018 year, and this situation has put the museum in a financial bind. A second deputation was heard that further supported the request of the Old Gaol volunteer committee that asked for assistance for the museum on two different fronts. The first request was for assistance in preparing a business plan. The second request was

for someone with business experience from council, or the City, to join the volunteer board currently running the museum to provide guidance and expertise moving forward. After surprisingly little discussion, immediate help was not forthcoming. Councillor Junkin introduced a motion asking the museum, with the help of the City’s Small Business Center, to prepare a business plan to be shared with council sometime in the next few months. Only after hearing the proposal would any kind of short term assistance be considered.

Development

James Webster, the owner/developer of the land in question, made a presentation to council wondering why he had not been consulted regarding meetings with the Province of Ontario that have significantly changed the size of the housing development that was going to be built on a portion of non-agricultural land that he currently possesses. The reduction in the number of homes is significant, and Webster, plus a deputation from the Fenelon Trails group, want to meet with City staff to discover the province’s reasoning behind the reduction in development. Much discussion ensued, until Councillor Elmslie put forward a motion calling on the City to meet with Webster and Fenelon Trails and a report be returned to council by July 17.

Redevelopment of the Grand Hotel

The real fireworks were saved for the almost hour-long discussion regarding the $15 million office building that is in the planning stages to replace all but the facade of the Grand Hotel in downtown Lindsay. The new building will be three stories tall, have over 50,000 square feet of office and retail space, and the developer in his presentation needed closure on the issue of parking spaces as part of the project. In past downtown re-development projects, developers have been asked to pay for every parking spot the project needs. This project requires approximately 100 parking spots. The developer will create 55 spots in underground parking. This leaves a shortfall of approximately 45 parking spaces. Some councillors, led by Councillor Dunn, believe the true cost of each one of these parking spots is over $5,000. City staff has suggested to the developer that each spot should be priced at about $700. Lindsay currently has a shortage of downtown parking space, and some councillors believed this project could make that even worse. Every councillor was in agreement that they wanted the project to go forward, but only after parking concerns were addressed. The developer made it very clear that after four years of “delays”, he was ready to build, or perhaps ready to throw in the towel. After a byzantine series of proposals, counter proposals and friendly amendments, the development was approved with City staff to respond in 30 days regarding the true cost of creating new parking spots. In the New Year, the City will receive a commissioned

report on parking in downtown Lindsay that will project need through to 2031. It seemed like a classic Canadian political compromise where most involved got something of what they wanted. If you ever thought politics was boring, you missed a battle royal at City Hall!

BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD

In the past six months, the ‘hot button’ item for Trent Lakes council has been the debate over the construction of a new central public works depot. The idea to build a new central depot at the municipality’s County Road 49 yard near Bobcaygeon was moving forward to the point where plans for the new structure were presented to council. This is after public meetings and the seeming support of all council members since 2012. Then stirrings from the public began to emerge that perhaps the County Road 49 yard site wasn’t the most central spot to locate the depot. Citizens in Galway and Buckhorn worried about depleted or delayed service to their roads if the only depot was at the very edge of the municipality. A further report prepared by Cambium Inc. was created, outlining all the reports and studies done thus far on the project. That was presented at the May 15 regular council meeting. The study concluded that after five and a half years, Council and staff have spent considerable time and money trying to sort out the best solution to a problem that is not going away. Current and future infrastructure needs have driven the process and the report concludes that whatever choice the Municipality makes, a new public works depot will be in the cards. The next decision, according to the study, will be whether to service the Municipality with one central depot or multiple depots. Since 2012, the municipality has spent $250,000 in studies and plans. Councillor Peter Raymond pointed out that the concept of a central public works depot has merit but the costs were too great (around $5 million and climbing). “We are charged to be fiscally responsible,” he said. Councillor Raymond brought forth a resolution to not support the centralized depot option and only receive the Cambium report as information. He also requested that staff look into repairing and improving the Buckhorn and County Rd. 49 depots and report on solutions and costs for the condemned Galway depot. In a recorded vote, council supported these resolutions 4 to 1. Mayor Bev Matthews did not support the new direction council was taking on the issue. So it’s back to the drawing board for the municipality. Councillor Dick Persson summed up the feeling of council when he stated that “in a municipality of this size we need more than one depot.”

The City of Kawartha Lakes wishes to inform the residents of Lindsay, Fenelon Falls and Bobcaygeon, that the Water and Wastewater Division began flushing watermain dead ends as of May 22, 2018 and will continue for the duration of four weeks. NDP CANDIDATE MEETS COUNCIL

Sean Conway, the New Democratic Party provincial candidate for the Peterborough-Kawartha riding met Trent Lakes Council at their regular May 15 meeting. After introducing himself as a member of Curve Lake First Nations, a Peterborough resident and small business manager, the enthusiastic and well-spoken candidate asked council what issues were important to Trent Lakes citizens. Councillor Peter Raymond outlined three areas of concern: public transportation, health care, and hydro bills. Conway pointed out that the former Mike Harris government (Conservative) downloaded transportation costs, including roads to the municipalities. The NDP party platform promises to return 50 percent of that funding. He also cited the Curve Lake First Nation public transit model that Conway thinks would work for areas like Buckhorn with provincial funding. Conway explained that a big factor in rising health care costs and hospital crowding is coming from a lack of universal dental care. He said that the NDP platform outlines how universal dental care would help reduce costs and improve health. Electricity costs have been a common beef for years in Ontario. Once again Conway blamed the former Harris government for beginning the process of selling off the distribution of electricity to private corporations. Rural Ontarians pay more for hydro electricity because of this. Conway told council the NDP plan is to get back this part of hydro electricity distribution, which will lower costs for rural users. Policing costs have become the burden of every municipality since the downloading years ago. Conway

said the NDP plan to repair that, too. He stated it was troubling to see some municipalities going to a private policing model due to over-the-top costs. Councillor Dick Persson asked Conway where the money to accomplish these issues would come from. Mayor Bev Matthews said, “all candidates want to be Santa Clauses.” “We will be asking a little bit more (money) from folks who are doing really well,” responded Conway. Conway outlined that the NDP costed platform has been audited by a former PC number cruncher. There will be a corporate tax increase, but Ontario will still be competitive with other provinces and the USA, he said. Electioneering will be hot and heavy as the province gears up for the June 7 vote.

TL TAX NUMBERS ARE IN

Trent Lakes council heard from its Director of Finance/Treasurer Donna Teggart on the final numbers for the 2018 budget. The total amount to be collected this year from property owners is just over $21 million. For every dollar collected the municipality gets 43 percent. The remainder of that dollar is split between the County of Peterborough (37 percent) and education (20 percent). For homeowners, the combined tax hit will be an increase of 2.4 percent or $76.17. For the average assessed property in the Residential class in Trent Lakes, that means property values average just under $369,000, up about $10,000 from 2017.

Total average taxes, including Municipality, County and Education are $3,241.22. As a member of Peterborough County, Trent Lakes contributes 18.84 percent ($7,781,429) to the county levy, second only to the municipality of Selwyn which contributes 25.91 percent ($10,705,699).

ENVIRONMENTAL HERO

During a special Council meeting on May 15, the City of Kawartha Lakes presented the 2017 Environmental Hero Award to Candice Milroy. A hero is a person who believes that they can make the world a better place. As the well-being of the environment becomes an ever-increasing global problem, Candice Milroy has become an Environmental Hero. The City of Kawartha Lakes Environmental Advisory Committee selected Candice Milroy as the recipient of the 2017 Environmental Hero Award because she contributes to the betterment of the community through her commitment to environmental projects and initiatives. Candice teaches at Langton Public School through an environmental lens, supporting students by teaching them how to reduce their carbon footprints and take care of the earth. In 2018, she organized a Green Team at Langton Public School which meets regularly to plan and organize a variety of environmental events. “Those who receive the Environmental Hero Award do so because of their passion for the environment and the goodness of their hearts,” said Mayor Letham. “On behalf of all of Council, thank you for all that you do.”

FUNDING FOR CANADA DAY EVENTS

The City of Kawartha Lakes will provide a total of $10,000 in Canada Day funding to support five communities in the City of Kawartha Lakes celebrating Canada Day. The funding is in addition to the $27,200 in support received from the Federal government through the Canadian Heritage Celebrate Canada Program. The following communities will receive funding for their 2018 Canada Day celebrations: • Lindsay Canada Day Committee • Bobcaygeon Canada Day Committee • Fenelon Falls Canada Day Committee • Kinmount Canada Day Committee • Omemee Lions Club The funding will be applied towards the cost of various aspects of these events including fireworks, entertainment, promotional and logistic event related expenses. Kawartha Settlers’ Village on the Attractions Ontario website to help them win. Each year, Attractions Ontario announces the top Ontario tourist attractions in eight categories, and this year the Kawartha Settlers’ Village has been nominated as a finalist in the Top Small Museum, Art Gallery or Historic Site category. The Village has more than 20 authentic homes and buildings filled with historical artifacts ranging from 1830 to 1935. Thus, Attractions Ontario has nominated Kawartha Settlers’ Village for its ability to craft and share memorable, historical experiences. “We were very excited to hear we were nominated,” said Robyn Barton, the Kawartha Settlers’ Village Marketing Coordinator. “We have a lot of new and exciting events and exhibits this summer, and this is a great way to get people out to Kawartha Settlers’ Village and see what is going on.” Winners of each individual category will be announced October 1, 2018, along with the three attractions that received the most votes overall. The attraction that receives the most votes across all categories will be declared Attraction of the Year at the Tourism Industry Association of Ontario Tourism Summit in October, 2018. Barbara Truax has been a driving force behind many fundraising efforts and organizations for many, many years. She truly exemplifies a community champion. Kawartha Lakes Food Source (KLFS) was honoured that Barbara choose to share her time for 16 years. To honour the contributions, dedication and positive energy of our second longest serving volunteer, the fundraising committee established an award in her name. The Barbara Truax Volunteer Award will be handed out annually at the KLFS Volunteer Appreciation event. The recipient will embody the following: have been an active volunteer for more than three years; be a positive force within the community; and be committed to the cause. Barbara joined our Board of Directors on July 10, 2002. She held the positions of Director, Secretary, Vice-Chair and Chair. She then chaired the Fundraising committee from 2003 to 2013 and remained an active committee member until October 2017. Kawartha Lakes Food Source is pleased to share that the first recipient of the Barbara Truax Volunteer Award is Shannon Kuypers. Shannon has been a member of the Fundraising (now Events) committee for almost four years. She jumped in and started to plan events and has raised over $45,000 for KFLS! She was co-chair of the committee for two years and now focuses on two large events per year – a comedy night and a children’s show. Shannon volunteers well over 100 hours per year. She also works full time as a teacher, has a supportive husband and three very busy children.

FIELD ALMOST FILLED

In the last two weeks, the slate of candidates for the provincial election in Haliburton-Kawartha LakesBrock has grown to five registered candidates, with the possibility of a Green candidate being added soon. Laurie Scott will again be carrying the Progressive Conservative banner in the riding and is the incumbent candidate. Scott was acclaimed as the candidate in January 2017, and will be difficult to unseat. She represents likely the safest Conservative riding in Ontario, and heads up a political machine that is the envy of her opponents. Within hours of the writ dropping, blue Scott signs sprouted up around the county like dandelions. Her volunteers are experienced and dedicated. Laurie believes most Ontarians “hate” Kathleen Wynne, and are keen to throw the ruling Liberal out on June 7. Scott believes that Liberal fiscal mismanagement, rising hydro costs and concerns about jobs will be the key issues in the upcoming election. The Liberals and NDP have both nominated university Political Science majors to represent them in the upcoming vote. Brooklynne Cramp-Waldinsperger will carry the Liberal colours, while Zac Miller will try to win the riding for the NDP. Cramp-Waldinsperger thinks it is time that the

riding has a new voice at Queen’s Park. Waldinsperger touts publicly funded tuition for low-income families, the Basic Income pilot project and the expansion in OHIP services as reasons for voting Liberal again. Waldinsperger also believes that free daycare slots for pre-school aged children are long overdue, and will make a huge difference in many families’ lives. Miller opposes the Liberal cuts to social assistance, and believes that Ontario Works needs to be expanded. Miller supports raising the corporate tax rate, and touts the even more inclusive NDP child care program as the route to go. Both of the 20-something candidates believe that they can re-invigorate politics in the riding, and motivate a whole new group of young people to get involved in the political process. Gene Balfour is running for the Libertarian Party, and hopes to use this election as an opportunity to inform the riding about Libertarian principles and beliefs. Balfour believes the party and its ideas can put down deep roots in the riding, preparing for future successes. Thomas Rhyno is registered as an independent candidate at time of publication, but little is available about him. Local Green Party supporters were hoping to field a candidate, but they realize with only a 28-day campaign their window for getting involved is closing rapidly, and an announcement had better be by week’s end. Individuals running against Scott point to the latest polling, where almost 50 percent of voters are undecided, and have yet to park their preferences with one party or the other. That kind of volatility is very unusual in Ontario where party loyalties are strong, and often generational. One party source shared with me that voters are tired of Wynne, distrustful of Horwath and openly hostile to Doug Ford who some are now calling “Doug Trump”. One organizer told me that while doing doorto-door pamphlet drop offs they are hearing that this is an election where all the choices are loathsome, and many are resigned to “holding their nose” and voting for the best local candidate, rather than party or party leader. Let the local race begin, may all the key issues be well vetted and may the best candidate win.

Regardless of what politicians say publicly, they follow political polling religiously. The Liberals, Progressive Conservatives and New Democratic Party not only carefully parse public polling to see where they stand, but all three parties will be privately polling at least twice a week to give their leaders data on what Ontarians think and who they are likely to vote for. Polling before the drop of the writ had Doug

Ford and the Progressive Conservatives cruising to a crushing victory over the ruling Liberals, with the NDP and the Liberals scuffling for the mantle of Leader of the Official Opposition. It has only taken two weeks of campaigning to see those numbers start to skew in a decidedly different direction. The Progressive Conservatives still sit in first place with 40 percent of the decided voters. The NDP is surging in the polls, gaining almost seven percent in the last week to sit at 35 percent. The news for the Liberals is frightening. They currently sit at 22 percent, and their support has fallen by 4 percent in the last seven days. Barring a miracle, the end is coming for the Wynne government in less than a month. Both the Liberals and the Progressive Conservatives have awoken to this NDP surge, and have spent the last few days lambasting Andrea Horwath on everything from poorly costing her party’s promises to being a threat to small business in Ontario. Polling firms right across the province have noticed this NDP shift, and the NDP currently are polling first in northern Ontario and southeastern Ontario, and are making inroads into the Liberal fortress, the GTA. A strong showing by Horwath in the vote-rich 416 area code could create an interesting and unforeseen outcome on Election Day. Polling firms have shared the outright hostility

they are hearing when voters are asked about Premier Wynne and Progressive Conservative leader Doug Ford. Wynne voters are moving to the NDP and some truly Progressive Conservatives are going to stay home on Election Day, disgusted by their new party leader and his bevy of intolerant stands. The teachers’ unions, staunch supporters of the Liberals, have begun to move their money, influence and volunteers to the NDP. The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario has already endorsed Horwath and the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation is expected to follow suit. Most Ontarians with gray hair like me remember the election of 1990 when the Liberals, led by David Peterson, called the election a year early, angered voters, and were eviscerated by the NDP led by Bob Rae. Rae won a comfortable majority, winning just 38 percent of the popular vote. The Conservatives, led for the first time by fiscal conservative Mike Harris watched their support evaporate through a series of unforced errors, and the wild unpopularity of the federal Conservatives, led by Brian Mulroney. With almost 50 percent of Ontarians still undecided, this election has a long way to go. I look forward to the next round of polling. Currently undecided Ontarians will be the king makers on June 7.

SUMMER LUNCH PILOT PROJECT

The Food Security Working Group, a committee of the Kawartha Lakes Food Coalition, will be running a pilot project in the Lindsay area focused on feeding children in the summer. The Salvation Army and the Kawartha Lakes Food Source, as part of the committee, are partnering on this project. The Kawartha Lakes Food Coalition recognizes the gap in available food during the summer months, for children who benefit from in-school meal programs. The catchment areas for 2018 will consist of: King Albert P.S., Queen Victoria P.S., and St. Mary Catholic Elementary School. Our goal is to make a lunch consisting of a sandwich/wrap, a fruit, vegetables, yogurt/cheese and baked treat. We believe that the number of children who will access the program will be between 100 and 125 each day. The program will run on Wednesdays and Fridays each week from July 4th until August 31st. This is 9 weeks, 18 days worth of lunches; therefore 1,800 to 2,250 lunches will need to be made over the course of the summer. We are looking for support from churches,

businesses and individuals in the community, to fund the food aspect of the program. Thank you to the United Way for your financial support to get this pilot started. Support can be made through a donation of cash, grocery store gift cards, or food items. A taxable receipt will be issued for any financial donation over $10. Donations can be dropped off at: Kawartha Lakes Food Source, 41 George St. W., Lindsay, or The Salvation Army, 30 Peel St., Lindsay. We ask that all donations of food be dropped off on Monday or Tuesday before 4pm to give volunteers enough time to prepare the lunches. Food items needed include: fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese and cheese strings, eggs, tuna, salmon, ground beef, whole wheat flour, pasta sauce, mayonnaise, chocolate chips and jam. We are also looking for volunteers interested in baking on Monday mornings, making sandwiches and/or delivering food on Wednesday and Friday mornings. Please don’t throw things in the lakes or rivers, at the roadside or in the ditch. Throughout most of the area, you can find a recycle bin somewhere to drop in your plastics. STORY TIME FOR LITTLE ONES

The Trent Lakes Library in Buckhorn welcomes children of all ages to attend their Story Time sessions every Wednesday morning at 11am. There’s a huge movement to rid the world of plastic – water bottles, grocery bags, straws and so much more. And the reason for this is quite simple – people have made it an environmental hazard. We’ve all seen photos of sea life trapped in plastic, or the aftermath of a sea tortoise eating a plastic bag that made its way into the water. But these same problems affect our local wildlife as well, both on the water and off.

There’s a unique tour on June 23 in Millbrook that might appeal to gardeners and those who love quilts. The event, Blocks and Blooms, features 12 distinctive gardens to tour, heritage properties to view up close, and the Airing of the Quilts – an exhibit and display of both modern and heirloom quilts. BAD NEWS/GOOD NEWS What does “best-before” really mean?

My mother and I are constantly arguing about when to throw out food. She grew up in a time when food and money was scarce and you didn’t throw anything out unless absolutely necessary. She’s even been known to cut the mould off of certain foods and eat them anyway, with no ill effects. On the other hand, I used to throw out anything past the “best-before” date or the expiry date. I have ulcerative colitis and don’t want to take any chances. When the family gathers for dinner at “nan’s” house we all check the dates on the food before eating. We’ve found some that are YEARS past the “best before” date. So I decided to see who was right and I was shocked at what I learned. The bad news is that, on average, each Canadian tosses away 170 kilograms or 873 pounds of food a year, according to the Commission for the Environmental Cooperation. More than $31 billion in food is wasted annually in Canada a nd when energy, water and other resource costs are factored in, the true cost could be up to three times that much,cited in a report from Value Chain Management. One of the main contributors to the problem is “bestbefore” dates. The National Zero Waste Council has a mandate of cutting waste from the Canadian economy. They told the Financial Post, “Best-before dates are low-

hanging fruit,” said Denise Philippe. “The dates on our food packaging are all over the map.” According to Philippe, too much food gets tossed because consumers and businesses assume a best-before date is a deadline. It’s not. That’s the good news! According to Health Canada the “best-before” date tells you about the freshness and shelf life of the unopened food you are buying. It is important to know that a bestbefore date is only meant to indicate how long a food will retain its normal wholesomeness, flavour, and nutritional value when stored, unopened, under normal conditions. Expiration dates are different. Some foods -- such as meal replacements, nutritional supplements, infant formulas and formulated liquid diets -- mustcarry an expiration date. The expiration date is the date up to which the food maintains its microbiological and physical stability and the nutrient content declared on the label. Foods with an expiration date should not be consumed after the date on the label has passed. So the bottom line is, just because a food is past the “best before” date doesn’t mean it has to go! In both cases Health Canada advises: Use your judgment. When in doubt, throw it out. In a way, I guess my Mom and I were both right. You can find more local news and reports on www.kawartha411.ca.

Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) is asking the community to help celebrate the ninth annual Family Doctor Appreciation Week, being held June 4 to 8. The week will honour the many wonderful family doctors practicing in the City of Kawartha Lakes. Family doctors are essential to the health and vitality of our community and we hope that all citizens will take the time to extend their gratitude for the day-to-day and lifelong commitments that these doctors make. Local businesses are encouraged to show their support throughout the week by displaying words of thanks and encouragement to family doctors on their organization’s signage. Simple acknowledgement of the week, such as “Family Doctor Appreciation Week, June 4 - 8” or other special words of thanks such as “Thank You to our Family Doctors” are some suggestions being offered by KLHCI. We also encourage all City of Kawartha Lakes citizens to show their support by thanking their family doctor for the professional health care that they provide. KLHCI will be sending letters of appreciation to all family doctors. KLHCI has recognized two family doctors with gift certificates for a weekend get-away for two at any Ontario Inns and Spa. KLHCI thanks all of the children who participated in the poster and letter writing contest. Did you know that when you give a member of the Royal Canadian Legion a donation in exchange for a poppy, you’re not only showing respect for those who served our country, you’re also giving back to your community? The members of the Royal Canadian Legion’s Branch 67 in Lindsay direct poppy funds where they believe they’re needed most. This year, the Ross Memorial Hospital Foundation is grateful to receive a donation to be directed to the purchase of a 3D mammography unit with biopsy capabilities. Howie Johnston (Branch 67 President), James Cameron (Service Chair) and John Sherman (Poppy Chair) recently presented a cheque for $20,000 to

Foundation Executive Director Erin Coons. “The community gives to us and we give back to the community,” said Howie Johnston. “Thanks to the generosity of the Lindsay Legion, we’re even closer to meeting our goal to purchase the new 3D mammography unit for the Diagnostic Imaging department,” said Erin Coons. “When added to other gifts made by individuals and organizations passionate about breast imaging, we’ve now raised $318,000 toward the cost of the new mammography unit.” The purchase of the new mammography unit is part of a Diagnostic Imaging redevelopment project beginning at Ross Memorial Hospital this month. Enhancements in the area include the replacement of X-ray equipment and renovations to several rooms. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 67 has been a generous supporter of patient care at Ross Memorial Hospital, supporting equipment needs including anaesthesia machines, pain pumps, MRI and the CT Scanner and cystoscope equipment. The Lindsay Legion’s cumulative giving totals $154,602.

Jet travelers often encounter the potentially painful problem (medically known as “barotrauma”) of having their ears blocked and in need of “popping.” Most people respond to this annoying sensation by yawning, which helps to open the Eustachian tubes and regulate pressure in the middle ear. It may also help to sip water and swallow to activate the muscles that open the Eustachian tube. If these methods don’t work, the “Valsava maneuver” may be tried, which involves taking a deep breath and pinch the nose shut. Then, keeping the mouth closed, the individuals tries to gently blow air through his or her nose. Another tactic, the Toynbee maneuver, involves pinching the nose closed and closing the mouth, then trying to swallow. If you’ve tried just about every tactic you can think of to deal with your diminished hearing—shouting, turning up the volume, avoiding conversation, and withdrawing from social situations—now try an audiologist. Too many people across Ontario experience pain and suffering because they can’t afford basic dental care. The Ontario Oral Health Alliance (OOHA) wants to do something about this. During election time, it's important to find out where your local candidate stands on the issue. There’s a public dental program for low income children, and a patchwork of inadequate programs for adults on social assistance, but no public oral health program for adults and seniors who can’t afford to pay out of pocket for dental care. Many private dentists won’t accept people on social assistance. Research shows people living on low incomes prefer to go to public dental clinics in Community Health Centres and Public Health Units

where they are welcomed and can access other health and social services. The OOHA believes there should be equitable access to oral health care for everyone in Ontario. Their ideas include: • The next Ontario government should extend public dental programs for children to include low-income adults and seniors. • Roll over current funding for social assistance dental benefits into the new program, so people on social assistance are included. Cover prevention, treatment and emergency dental services, as well as dentures. • Phase in the program to meet the needs of the most vulnerable people in our communities who are living on low incomes and have no dental insurance. • Provide operating funding to support a mixed model of public and private dental care delivery. • Make full use of existing public dental clinics in Community Health Centres (CHCs), Public Health Units and any other community organizations with funding that allows them to treat low income adults and seniors, as well as children. • Ensure accessibility for low income people with capital funding to add dental suites in CHCs, aboriginal Health Access Centres and Public Health Units which don’t have them. • Invest in public dental buses and innovative uses of technology so that people living in long-term care homes, rural and remote communities have equitable access to oral health care.

X-Ray imaging is so important to our patients’ diagnosis and treatment, it’s available 24/7/365 days a year.” “Dr. Wilson’s letter will be mailed to every household in the City of Kawartha Lakes so that everyone will have an opportunity to define care at Ross Memorial,” said Brian Kelsey, Chair of the RMHF Board of Directors. “The Hospital doesn’t receive government funding to replace medical equipment, so we’re counting on the generosity of our community to help us keep this time-tested equipment available around the clock.” “When we were researching what year the Ross Memorial acquired its first X-Ray machine, we discovered that it was James Ross who made that important purchase 100 years ago,” said Erin Coons, RMHF Executive Director. “That discovery really emphasizes the impact donors make - and have always made - on patient care.”

Tech Electronics in Lindsay is holding their 5th annual open house to support the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes. This year, it’s on Wednesday, June 13 from 10am to 7pm. In addition to a small charge to play the game(s), they will be selling hot dogs and pop with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes. The hot dogs and pop will be available from 11:30am to 4pm. Not only can you shop at warehouse prices on a regular basis, on June 13 there will be special deals as well. The event will be held at Tech Electronics, 76 St. David Street in Lindsay.

FAIRIES AND DRAGONS, OH MY!

The 5th Annual Fairy and Dragon Festival is a free costume event for the whole family, held on Saturday, June 9 from 10am to 4pm at The Cenotaph Park in Lakefield. This year, Day Two of the Festival, Sunday, June 10, will be held at Isabel Morris Park behind the Lakefield Arena/ Tim Horton’s from 11am to 3pm and costs $10 for adults and $5 for children over six years of age; children under 6 are free. The admission cost is to raise money and awareness to pay the festival entertainers. In addition to the amazing Blades of Glory troupe, Sparky the Dragon, Razberry the Clown, and Eden Cairns’ Fairy Princesses and Dragons, on the Sunday event only other entertainers featured will include: John Foreman (who built the Bancroft Outdoor Theatre) doing a broad-axe demonstration and building a bench for the Village of Lakefield; Champion chainsaw carver Steven Kenzora doing a chainsaw demonstration, John Mullin piping the day in, and PACA (Peterborough Academy of Circus Arts) final winner of Circus Idol show.

Organizer Mary McGillis of Celtic Connection in Lakefield, said, “Costumes are optional, but we have amazing costume prizes and expect a lot of people will dress up. HELPING WOMEN IN CRISIS

There is no doubt that at the government level, great strides have been made in raising public consciousness and putting steps in place to prevent sexual assault. New laws, programs and resources have been adapted, but there is still a lot of work to be done. It is estimated that one in three Canadian women will experience sexual assault as an adult and sadly, it is still on the rise, especially with the growth of human sex trafficking which is currently in the forefront of the news. Although Women’s Resources of Kawartha Lakes recognizes the month of May as an important one to raise awareness in preventing the devastating violence and aftermath associated with sexual assault, it is our job to do this work 12 months of the year. Women’s Resources provides a safe haven and housing for women fleeing from abusive relationships, including sexual abuse, however we are also here to provide education, awareness and support through our resource centre and outreach programs. These programs are available for women, children, teens and others who have witnessed or experienced abuse. Our 18 bed emergency shelter, our 8 unit second stage housing program in Fenelon Falls and our counselling programs are the only services specifically for abused women in our community, including those who are sexually abused. For 28 years we have strived to provide the care and counselling victims need to make a life free from the nightmare of abuse many of us can’t even imagine. We can’t do this work alone. Gillespie, Robert Lee “Bob” Passed away at Ross Memorial Hospital on Wednesday May 9, 2018. Bob Gillespie of Bobcaygeon in his 91st year. Father of the Robbie and Carol. The Kawartha Yarn & Fibre Festival has joined forces with the team at Maryboro Lodge, Kawartha Heritage and Ontario Sheep Farmers to bring you Wool Day in Fenelon Falls on Saturday, June 9. The City of Kawartha Lakes has been notified of salespeople attempting to sell drinking water filtration/ purification equipment and stating that the municipal drinking water is unsafe to drink. City employees carry identification and do not approach residents to sell any type of equipment. Should you be approached by any salespeople claiming to be with the City, do not allow them access to your home. City staff carry identification that includes the City logo. The City is asking any residents who are approached by these individuals to call the City at 705-324-9411 or report the incident on their website. If you receive a business card or see the name of the business on a vehicle or shirt, please report it. Door-todoor salespeople are in violation of Bill 59, the “Putting Consumers First Act”. Residents should be cautious about allowing strangers access to their homes and should scrutinize any photo ID carefully. Periodically, the City of Kawartha Lakes conducts lead sampling at private residences. When lead testing is undertaken, notification regarding lead testing is posted on the City’s website.
