matter what the experts say, it’s time to buy your snow shovels, give the snowblower a once-over and take stock of your mitts, hats and scarves. As it’s Thanksgiving and we spend time with family and friends, I think it’s important to take the meaning of the season to heart and give thanks for those people and opportunities in our lives. I’ll go first ... I’d like to thank my family and friends for seeing me through these tough times, my community for holding me up and understanding my need to step back, my “theatre family” for coming to my rescue with a reason to laugh, my colleagues here at The Kawartha Promoter for giving me somewhere to be every two weeks, and of course you, our readers, for continuing to support our efforts. Happy Turkey Day!
Leaves are falling, air is chilling and we’re heading into Thanksgiving weekend with high hopes that the winter will be gentle. I’m not a fan of winter, but it’s inevitable. Every year, I like to see what the weather “experts” are telling us about what’s in store. So I’ll share ... PROMOTER IS JUST THAT
This is a letter of appreciation. The “Promoter” is just that -- a local newspaper whose goal is to promote our town and what is going on in and around our town. I recently approached The Promoter to help promote upcoming events at the Royal Canadian Legion in Bobcaygeon, along with recognizing the generous donation of three unique dollhouses to the Branch. Deb at The Promoter offered to do her editorial on the Legion stressing anyone can come into the

Legion and that you not have to be member to enjoy events or help out at the Legion. Deb also did an article on the dollhouses and encouraged the community to drop into the Legion and attend events to support the Legion. The Promoter has a large number of readers and the impact of this support from them to the Legion had a major impact. The Promoter’s Sales Manager, Laura came out of her office to offer to help attain vendors for the “Ladies Night” going up and beyond her duties at The Promoter. Where else can you go to get such support and promotion? After these articles, people came forward and offered to help as well as attend our events. Our “Ladies Night” was sold out (and beyond) -attendance was fantastic and proved that this kind of support from The Promoter works and is very much appreciated. I want to take this opportunity to thank The Promoter for making me feel so comfortable and welcomed into their workplace, for their personal and professional offer to help promote the Royal Canadian Legion and for the positive outcome of their promotional assistance. I dropped in to give them a card of thanks but felt I needed to do more to give them the recognition they deserve as “Promoters” of things that really matter to our community. A heartfelt thanks to you all. Margaret Cameron Past President Royal Canadian Legion Bobcaygeon

CORRECTION: In our story, “Can Cottagers Vote” in the September 20 issue, we incorrectly identified the website address for voters to look up their name on the list. According to Jessica Clark, the Deputy Returning Officer for the Municipality of Trent Lakes “The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) is legislated to prepare the Preliminary Electors’ List (PLE) for municipal elections. They created the website voterlookup.ca in order to help ensure the information contained in that list is as accurate as possible. In order to meet their legislated timelines of producing the PLE, voterlookup.ca was disabled on August 31 for all municipalities across Ontario. It is now the responsibility of the Clerk’s Office of each Municipality to facilitate any changes that need to be made to the electors’ list. The Municipality of Trent Lakes has produced our own version of a voter lookup at www.trentlakes.ca/ voterregistration.” In addition, we incorrectly identified the October 2 meeting at the Trent Lakes Municipal Office as a “public candidates meeting.” It was a Voter Information Session to provide voters with an introduction to online voting. The Kawartha Promoter apologizes for the errors.

Tuesday, September 23 marked the last CKL Council meeting before the majority of the current members scatter to begin campaigning in earnest for their re-election on October 22. It also marked the last full meeting of the full 17-member Council that voted itself out of existence earlier this term. I would be remiss to not recognize the three councillors who are not running for re-election this October. Stephen Strangway, Gord Miller and Isaac Breadner have decided to move on to new challenges and their dedication, hard work and concern for constituents and the CKL will be sorely missed.
Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers
Mayor Letham, on behalf of the Governor-General of Canada, presented Henry McCabe and Verna Humphries with medals to recognize at least 20 years of volunteerism and giving back to their communities. McCabe has volunteered with many organizations. A long-time volunteer with the Army Cadet League, McCabe also has a soft spot for helping those with learning disabilities. Humphries has worked with adults with developmental disabilities, offering them additional educational opportunities. Norma Long - Manager/Broker

Drainage Task Force Report
After five meetings, this volunteer task force, chaired by local farmer Paul Brown, returned a number of recommendations to Council. The primary issue the task force looked at was how the City could aid farmers in field drainage and getting drains installed. The task force recommended that the CKL give the Drainage Board more power, which would allow drainage approvals to move much more quickly, and remove councillors and politicking from the process as a whole. Council unanimously approved the recommendations of the task force.
Downtown Revitalization Project 2017
Staff reported back to Council on the successes and challenges over the past year improving the downtowns of Coboconk, Norland, Fenelon Falls and Omemee. From 2014 to 2017, approximately $750,000 of municipal, provincial, and federal money has been spent on these projects. The premise was that healthy downtowns are key to vibrant and growing economies, and that expanded downtowns are engines that drive economic growth. Staff reported that 18 new businesses have opened in the four downtowns. • In Omemee, murals now beautify the downtown and a series of concerts is bringing people to Coronation Hall. • In Norland and Coboconk, the installation of new docks and boardwalks make the waterfront much more appealing. • In Fenelon Falls, achievements included the new splash pad, improvements to the Trent-Severn Waterway, and a bike share program Councillors Martin, Macklem and Yeo encouraged the City to continue this program as many in their Check out our 2nd location at Wilson Fields on Thursday 11 am to 5:30 pm. Illegal Dumping of Fill on Farmland
A deputation by Ron Reed focused on current City bylaws regarding the dumping of fill on local farmland. Before this meeting, there was very little legislation to prevent thousands of truckloads of potentially dangerous fill from being trucked into the City and dumped on land that was functioning farmland, but has been purchased by those looking to dump. As long as the land appeared to be farmed, dumping has been legal. Reed spoke of a property on Lake Dalrymple where this process was already happening. Council, led by Councillors Junkin, Stauble and Macklem, demanded that this issue be dealt with now before the situation becomes even more serious. Bylaw Enforcement asked for new tools to allow them to better deal with this potentially dangerous situation. By a unanimous vote, Council approved new bylaws that will prevent CKL farms. Mayor Letham encouraged Council to make sure that the Agriculture Advisory Committee was consulted as soon as possible to ensure that the needs of legitimate farmers were not impinged by these new bylaws.

Osprey Viewing Platform – Little Britain
Multiple deputations presented wildly differing “facts” regarding the impact of a homemade osprey viewing platform on a small waterfront subdivision, not far from Little Britain. The 30-foot structure, built in 2016, was erected without permits, and at least two of the neighbours to the tower presented emotionally charged deputations detailing the tower’s threat to their privacy, potential safety if it ever collapsed and the ospreys themselves who are apparently intensely private birds. Mayor Letham wanted the issue sent back to committee for further study, but his hand was forced by Councillors Stauble, Martin, Junkin, and Pollard who all took very strong stands against the osprey viewing platform. They suggested that this was not an issue for the next council to deal with, and that the precedent of building first and asking for permission later is a behavioural pattern the City should not further encourage. In a series of recorded votes, the application for rezoning the tower was rejected, with the logical extension likely being the City asking the owners to demolish the tower within a given timeframe.

CHORISTERS’ CORNER

Welcome to Fall! The leaves are turning, the weather is cooler and our last concert music is put away ready for the Christmas music to come out. We had a great concert with the Reunion choir. We all made it safely to Fenelon Falls despite the stormy weather. The audience was great and even gave us a standing ovation. It is wonderful that we have some new singers among us…we hope that they feel welcome and enjoy the music that Bob selects for us. We could always use some more male voices! It seems a long way until December but we have booked December 7 for our Christmas concert and I think there will be a few surprises waiting for you along with Christmas shortbread! I think if I remember correctly we ran out of cookies last year and hope to rectify that. Speaking about music -- and the concert -- Bob seems to find the very best and different Christmas music every year and this year is no exception. I don’t think we have ever sung this year’s pieces before. We do have some fun numbers along with an audience traditional Christmas sing-along. Did you know that we have a Facebook page? Just look for Bobcaygeon Choristers and you will see news and photographs of events as they become available. So until next time…turn that heat on and get ready for the change in seasons.

The station has 10 bikes that can be unlocked by a phone app, and the initiative came about because of partnerships. Funding from Ontario regional tourism and a sponsorship agreement with Enbridge Gas have made the bike rental in Fenelon Falls possible. Rental is through an app called Movatic on smartphones. Roots & Ramblings Submitted by Helen Kaphammel
Along the Mediterranean Sea in Spain, the growing season is all year long. My brother and his wife, in their seven square metre garden plot, raise two main plantings per year with different types of produce. At the end of September, when we begin our fall harvest, they are planting peas, fava beans, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, spinach, radishes, garlic, artichokes and fennel. Potatoes can be planted in both January and September. Crops such as lettuce, arugula, chard and onions can be put in the ground once again in September. Just to let you know, geraniums bloom all year long in the gardens and on the balconies! Now, here in Canada, we are ending our growing season with the corn and pumpkin harvest and the various Fall Fairs. It is time for us to plant spring bulbs before the first frost in order to enjoy next year’s colourful spring blooms. We should also be checking
garden centres for any perennials we still wish to plant before the frost hardens the ground. Any bushes and trees can also be planted in September as long as they are watered regularly before snow begins to fall. It’s also time for the garden cleanup, cutting back spent perennials to about 2 inches above ground. Leave coneflowers and other seed bearing perennials standing so that birds can feed off the seed heads. Don’t forget to surround tender perennials with mulch to protect from winter’s unpredictable weather pattern. Water all evergreens on a regular basis till the first frost. Delay pruning your shrubs until late winter or early spring while the shrubs are still dormant. The blooming of forsythia is a signal to prune roses back to new, healthy buds. Good luck with your fall plantings and clean-up. Don’t miss our special speaker for the October 18 meeting of the Horticultural Society at Knox Presbyterian Church. John Shaw-Remington is an internationally recognized expert in the skill and art of using dry-laid stone in the landscape. John is our featured speaker of 2018. Non-members are requested to pay a $5 admission to this evening only. Social time begins at 6:30 followed by a brief business meeting and the presentation. Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) Remember, Aquarius, that nothing is permanent. It may seem that our troubles will last forever, but this is not the case. Everything changes, usually for the better. Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) Patience isn’t just any old word, Pisces. It is an important character trait that will take you far in your career – and it must be practised, almost daily. So, start now! Aries (March 21 to April 20) Sleep on it. This has always been sage advice, passed on down through generations. If you are faced with a tough decision – and we sense you are – take time! You don’t have to rush into it. A good night’s sleep works wonders – and give yourself a few nights of sleep while you are at it!
Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) Learn to share your problems, Leo! Don’t always hide away behind a mask when the dark clouds appear. Open up – even if it’s just a little – and let others know how you are feeling. You are well-loved, and your friends and family are ready and willing to help. Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) You may think romance has passed you by, Virgo, but we’re here to tell you it’s never too late. So, flash that great big smile of yours and do something nice for someone – and just you wait! Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) Money matters! While we all like to think that “money isn’t everything”, it is certainly something – especially when you haven’t got enough. It’s also tied to our emotional head space – we tend to associate it with being in control and having power. Try to let go of these notions, Libra, and accept it for what it is – a means to having our fundamental needs met.
Taurus (April 21 to May 21) Worrying our lives away, wishing our children would hurry up and grow up – these are such sad pastimes! Appreciate what is in front of you NOW, Taurus. And know that if you can’t change something, no amount of worrying will help.
Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks, as we all know. Giving thanks for the food we have is a big part of that. Food, it seems, may play a significant role in the coming days for you, Scorpio. We trust you will realize that food, in itself, is not the most important thing – it’s who you share it with!
Gemini (May 22 to June 22) “We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are.”: J.K. Rowling. Choice is important in this life, dear Gemini. We all have the ability to choose the path we wish to follow. Choose wisely.
Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) You will be faced with career choices soon, Sag. They will involve decisions about whether to stay in a job you may not really like, but which provides you with stability, or move on to something more exciting, although risky. The choice is yours!
Cancer (June 23 to July 23) It’s okay to be a little wild, Cancer! Well, maybe not all the time. But, definitely, once in a while. It will give you some muchneeded energy and add a new dimension of FUN in your life. And we all need that!
Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) New adventures are in store for you, Capricorn. New directions, new ideas – they are all about to unfold, and you will find yourself more relaxed and with energy to spare. Stick with it!

Municipal election 2018 THREE CHALLENGE LETHAM’S RE-ELECTION
By Kirk Winter
Voters in the City of Kawartha Lakes have four options for Mayor when they make their mark later this month. Andy Letham, profiled in a previous article, is running for re-election, and is being challenged by Peter Weygang, Gord James, and Brian Junkin. Peter Weygang, from Bobcaygeon, is a retired educational bureaucrat running on a very different kind of platform than is typically seen in the CKL. Weygang believes that too much time is spent listening to the “expensive fancies of staff” and not enough time is spent listening to “the wisdom possessed by the electorate.” Weygang believes there needs to be absolute transparency at City Hall, and promises that his first act will be “taking the door off of the Mayor’s office.” Weygang postulates that the City is “drowning in red ink” because of staff costs that he claims includes 114 current staff on the provincial Sunshine list. Weygang wants to encourage direct democracy, decisions made by public referendum, all budgets and hiring approved by the public at large, and most City work outsourced to the private sector to avoid creating large permanent and expensive staffs. Gord James, a retired GM employee, farmer and councillor for Ward 12 since 2006, would also like the voter’s consideration for the Mayor’s chair. James is campaigning on a platform of tax increases being kept to the rate of inflation, reducing City borrowing and paying down the debt, preparing the City for future growth, and promoting what the area has to offer to tourists from far and wide. James wants the City to be more business friendly and to treat ratepayers with more respect when they have questions or concerns. James believes that future growth and good jobs will be coming to the City when the 407 is completed, making access to the GTA easier. James is also pushing for the
re-opening of some or all of the 11 dormant gravel pits and quarries across the City. James believes that those quarries will provide good jobs, and with gravel and stone available locally it would only increase the level of road building and resurfacing in the City, hopefully making roads safer for all. Brian Junkin is also a retired GM employee and two-term councillor from the north of the City hoping for your support. Junkin is very proud that he has not missed a council meeting in eight years, and believes that with the reduction in councillors from 16 to 8, the new council needs to be made up of “better councillors” to meet the demands of the new civic structure. Junkin is campaigning on a platform that includes improvements in City assets like roads, bridges, buildings, equipment and land. He would also like to see the City debt brought under control and reduced significantly. Junkin believes that a key engine for economic development is to help owners grow the businesses that we already have, rather than focus on the ones we don’t. Junkin believes that through his time on council, he understands the “unique qualities” of all the communities in CKL, and hopes that knowledge will make him a better Mayor. Junkin promises to treat all areas of the City equally, not favouring one area over another.

Elect Jim Greensides for Ward 2
“To pass a bylaw to force people to hook up to town water and sewer when they do not have to, is almost criminal.” I'm the 3rd generation of my family to live in the ward, and my children represent the 4th. I have built, and operated, a successful trucking business. And, since before amalgamation, I've been building a successful recycling company – right here in our ward. So I understand business and the environment – and how our municipal government can help both. Here are a few of my thoughts: In order to thrive and provide jobs from new companies, taxes for everyone must be kept down as much as possible and more of our tax dollars should stay in the ward. As well, we need to offer initiatives for industry to come and lower or drop certain fees and permit costs. In Burnt River, the municipal shed needs to be replaced, the library needs to be reopened – and never should have been closed – and the decision to close of the Baddow Fire Hall should be reviewed as well. Northline Road is in such bad shape that it should be public works item #1 on Council's agenda. And Northline Road is just one road in the city that needs major attention. The City could fix the roads using product from the gravel pits inherited in the amalgamation. We should lobby the province to bring the current 19 cents a tonne tax from quarries up to par with other provinces. For example, in Quebec, they get 50 cents a tonne.
I believe Council should review and possibly overhaul Kawartha Conservation. Make a point of scheduling council meetings at times that suit the public. I believe Council should also cut back on the number of closed door meetings and open the books to everyone. In my opinion, this is how our government should work: you, the people, tell your
705-928-1510
councillor what you want; the councillor talks it over with Council; and together with the Mayor, things get done. That is effective representation. I have the ability to work well with others; I have the time, the energy and the experience necessary to do a good job for you. Your vote counts. Vote for Jim Greensides. You'll be glad you did.

ELECTRONIC VOTING
Together we can make a difference
Raymonde Blais Couture
From the Municipality of Trent Lakes Website
Similar to other municipalities in Ontario, the Municipality of Trent Lakes approved the use of internet and telephone voting on February 21, 2017. Electronic voting reduces any errors that can occur during manual tabulation and the results will be available shortly after the polls close. In order to cast your vote electronically, you will need supply the randomly generated PIN assigned to you, in conjunction with a personal piece of information. By combining these two pieces of information, the integrity of the vote is maintained. Additionally, an auditor will be assigned to monitor voting activity. The Simply Voting system is secure and protects the secrecy of your vote. Voting electronically has enhanced accessibility and will allow everyone to participate in the election, with the goal of increasing voter turnout. Voters with disabilities (including visually and hearing impaired) have a greater degree of anonymity due to being able to vote unassisted. Voter PINs have been sent by mail to those who have registered. If you have not received your PIN, call the Municipal office at 705-738-3800. By Jennifer Wilson
The Coboconk, Norland & Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to be spearheading the concept of a new Wellness Centre in Coboconk that will help to address the issues that have arisen from the closure of the Coboconk Medical Centre. The concept is to renovate and expand the Coboconk Train Station building, preserving that piece of history of Coboconk, and building space for two to three doctors, walk-in clinic hours, a dentist, and other complementary practitioners such as seniors’ foot care, massage, physio and chiropractic care. Last week, Council gave us permission to proceed with defining this concept further with the help of City staff - which is encouraging. At this point in time, this is a conceptual project that we will take forward, put meat on the bones, and explore the overall viability. It is important for people to understand that this is not only a “Chamber of Commerce project.” We see our role in this project as bringing together the community to address a community issue. We are responding to a community need and acting as the point of contact and project manager to keep it moving along. Once the viability of the project is confirmed from the City’s and communities’ perspective, we will be working closely with all stakeholders to ensure all interests are taken into account. Our main objective is to ensure that there is a building to house medical services in Coboconk. We cannot do this alone and we are looking for partners and input to ensure this project meets the needs of the community and our medical professionals in the end. To that end, we have held a public meeting with a great turn-out, and we are very happy to hear from anyone wishing to get involved. This is an opportunity for Ward One communities to pool their energy into creating a hub for wellness in the northern area of the City that will benefit so many people. What do we see as the key element needed for success? Partnership with other community groups, residents, and seasonal residents. This initiative cannot be successful without you. If you’d like to get involved, please get in touch with Jennifer at the Chamber office.

WORKING TO MAKE BREAST CANCER BEATABLE
By Canadian Cancer Society
Every day, 73 Canadians will hear the words “you have breast cancer.” Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Canadian women and the second leading cause of cancer death. There is no doubt that receiving this diagnosis can be life-altering and more needs to be done to reduce the number of people facing the disease in our country. That’s why Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October is so important. It’s a chance to gather with others worldwide, and increase awareness of breast cancer and how each of us can make a difference. It’s a chance to volunteer with organizations that offer support programs to ensure no one faces breast cancer alone. It’s a chance to give generously to research to advance breast cancer prevention, screening, detection and treatment. Importantly, it’s a chance to stand beside those bravely living with breast cancer and to remember those we’ve lost. But October is also a chance to celebrate the progress that has been made against breast cancer. Thanks to advancements in early detection and treatment, more people will survive a breast cancer diagnosis than ever before. In fact, 87 percent of people diagnosed with breast cancer will survive five years beyond their diagnosis. This has improved by nearly 20 percent since the 1980s. The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) is the largest national charitable funder of breast cancer research.

Over the past 20 years, almost $390 million has been invested in breast cancer research by CCS and the former Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation combined; funding more than 1,000 research projects. This would not be possible without generous donors and events like the CCS’s CIBC Run for the Cure that help power breast cancer research across the country to benefit people in communities from coast to coast. For example, with funding from CCS, Dr. Jean Marshall from Dalhousie University discovered that an over-the-counter heartburn drug could block breast cancer in mice. If this drug is shown to work in people, then it could be rapidly repurposed as a new, safe and affordable breast cancer treatment and prevention tool for some women. In addition to funding game-changing breast cancer research, CCS offers a variety of programs to ensure every person facing breast cancer can access reliable information and compassionate support when and where they need it. For example, CCS’s Peer Match program connects people facing breast cancer with trained volunteers who have had a similar cancer experience. The volunteers listen, offer encouragement and share ideas for coping. Progress is being made every day but there is still so much more to be done. Canadians can get involved through volunteering or supporting the Canadian Cancer Society’s Gifts for the Cure aimed at investing in game-changing research and support programs for people facing breast cancer. Together, we can make breast cancer beatable. For more information, please visit cancer.ca.
VOLUNTEERS GIVE
Submitted by Kim Coulter
Volunteers at the Ross Memorial Hospital are driven by a common goal: they want to help. The ways in which they help would make a very long list. However, the themes are captured in the Auxiliary’s two pillars: service and fundraising. Thanks to the volunteers’ hard work and dedication, the Auxiliary is in the fortunate position to make a special gift — over and above the $150,000 donation made at its Annual General Meeting in June. At a special Auxiliary meeting recently, volunteers Marie Young, Trish Jordan, Deborah Cormier and Arlene White presented a cheque for $105,000 to Erin Coons, RMH Foundation Executive Director and Veronica Nelson, RMH Vice President Diagnostics, Procurement and Special Projects, to support the costs associated with urgent needs at the Hospital.

BETTER HEARING, FEWER ER VISITS
There is perhaps no better case that can be made in favor of wearing a hearing instrument than a recent one showing that hearing instruments can reduce the number of visits older adults make to emergency rooms. According to researchers who analyzed the data regarding 1,336 individuals aged 65 to 85, all of whom had severe hearing loss, only 45% reported wearing a hearing instrument. Compared to those who did not wear a hearing instrument, the hearing instrument users were slightly less likely to have gone to an emergency room or hospital in the past year. Those who had been hospitalized also had shorter stays. Hearing instruments seem to help avert accidents and improve communication between patients and health professionals. If you would like to learn about the various ways of safeguarding your hearing from hazards of all kinds— such as ER visits, miscommunication with loved ones, and missing out on social interaction and career advancement— we invite you to ask the people who know, the people who have your best interests at heart - the people at LINDSAY EAR CLINIC. We provide comprehensive hearing health care in a friendly, comfortable atmosphere. Don’t put it off any longer. If you think your hearing abilities are less than they once were, call us to see what we can do for you. Between our commitment to your well-being and our dedicated staff, your hearing is in good hands. P.S. About two-thirds of adults age 70 and older suffer from hearing loss. accept healthier foods at home.

HOLIDAY SHOPPING EXTRAVAGANZA
What started as a small show 40 years ago with approximately 20 vendors, has grown into two large rooms and 11 buildings with over 100 vendors. It is recognized as the one craft show in the Kawarthas no one wants to miss -- The Buckhorn Harvest Craft Show, October 6 to 8 at the Buckhorn Community Centre. With only 10 weeks left until Christmas, this is the perfect place to start your holiday shopping. There will be approximately 100 artisans from all areas of Ontario featuring the very best selection of Canadian handcrafted seasonal, country, traditional and contemporary crafts. Among the many items that will be on display are candles, pottery, leather goods, gourmet foods, furniture, florals, wooden toys, children’s clothing, jewellery, designer clothing for the entire family, handmade soaps, hand painted glass and a wide variety of home décor items. Also featured, will be items for seasonal decorating at Halloween or Christmas. As a special feature at this year’s show, there will be a booth for The Yellow Ribbon Campaign, a group who sends “goodies from home” to our armed forces around the world. They are hoping to obtain donations of money or items so that Christmas boxes can be sent to all the Troop locations. If you would like to contribute to this wonderful cause, drop by their booth to learn more and perhaps, drop off an item or two. The Craft Show is an annual fund-raising event for the non-profit, non-funded Buckhorn Community Centre. Show hours are 10am to 5pm on Saturday, October 6 and Sunday, October 7; and 10am to 3pm on Monday, October 8. General Admission is $5 and children 12 and under are admitted for free.
If you’re looking for a fun activity to help you stay fit and keep active this winter, you might want to give curling a try. This year, the Bobcaygeon Curling Club is once again holding an Information Open House on Wednesday, October 17 from 7pm to 8:30 pm. You can come and learn about curling and register for free on-ice instruction held on Thursday, October 18 and Friday, October 19 from 7pm to 9pm. New curlers can try the sport for the first time using equipment provided by the club. All you need is comfortable clothing, gloves and clean running shoes for the on-ice instruction sessions. If you’ve watched curling on television and think that throwing a rock down the ice from that “crouched” position (called “the hack”) looks too demanding, don’t worry, the club also provides instruction on “stick curling”. Stick curling allows you to deliver the rock from a standing position, using a “delivery stick” and has become very popular with many of their members. New members are always made to feel welcome at the Bobcaygeon Curling Club and it’s a great place to meet people and make new friends. Novice curlers are introduced to the game in a safe, positive environment and receive free lessons at the beginning of the season as part of their membership. For membership information, please visit www. BobcaygeonCurlingClub.ca or contact Trevor Trotter at 705-731-0816.

The Continuing Controversy
Submitted by Sherry Hillman
As surely as autumn follows summer every year, when it does it seems the controversy over the wild rice harvest erupts again. So I decided to go out and experience the harvest first-hand this year with a couple friends from Truth and Reconciliation Community (TRC) Bobcaygeon. We were busy helping James Whetung and his daughter Daimen, the stewards of the wild rice or “manomin” as it is called by the Nishnaabeg, with the harvest on Pigeon Lake, when one of the City of Kawartha Lakes councillors came by at the behest of one of the cottagers who had called her to complain. She asked us if this was the “infamous wild rice harvest.” She also just wanted to see it firsthand. We were happy to chat and answer her questions because that is always the first step towards reconciliation. Talking to each other; listening and learning - dialogue. The harvest is over for another year, but the debate continued on a Bobcaygeon Facebook page until the Administrator removed some offending comments. It was a distressing indication of the continuing need for education and understanding, which is more important than ever, now that the long-awaited court case over the Williams Treaty has finally been settled. The terms of the settlement were just recently officially announced. There was a significant cash settlement of $1.1 billion and the return of 11,000 acres to each of the seven Nishnaabeg Nations, in recognition that the federal government had not honoured the Williams Treaty and had, in fact, neglected to give them payments owed over many years. Most importantly, however, the settlement acknowledges that the Nishnaabeg had never surrendered their rights to hunt, fish and harvest. So the matter is now legally settled - our Nishnaabeg neighbours have the right to harvest manomin as their ancestors have done for millennium. But to fully reconcile the differences over the
rice harvesting more dialogue will be needed to promote greater understanding between our First Nations neighbours and nearby settler communities and cottagers. I urge you to see Cottagers and Indians at the Lakeview Arts Barn later this month. The play, by renowned playwright Drew Hayden Taylor, was inspired by this real-life local controversy on Pigeon Lake.
COTTAGERS AND INDIANS
By Glenna Burns
In the play Cottagers and Indians, first produced by Toronto’s Tarragon Theatre last winter, Curve Lake First Nations’ playwright Drew Hayden Taylor has turned the serious story of First Nations Manomin harvesting (wild rice) into ‘laugh out loud’ entertainment. Cottagers and Indians is now being presented by the Truth and Reconciliation Community Bobcaygeon. It will open for three evening performances at the Lakeview Arts Barn on October 23, 24 and 25 beginning at 8pm each evening. Ticket prices are $25 plus HST and are available at the box office by calling 705-738-2037 or 1-800-304-7897. The Globe and Mail theatre reporter had this to say about the original Tarragon Theatre production of Cottagers and Indians, “I laughed out loud. If you like the jokes in Come From Away, then look into Cottagers and Indians.” The Vancouver Sun reported, “Drew Hayden Taylor has a deft touch for mixing comedy and commentary in an entertaining and all-Canadian form of social satire.” The TRCBob presentation of the play features the cast of Herbie Barnes and Brooke Johnson. The original Tarragon production was directed by Patti Shaughnessy, also from Curve Lake First Nation. This Tarragon remount is directed by Melody Johnson. Sherry Telford, TRCBob co-chair explained the rationale for bringing this play to the Bobcaygeon area. “TRC Bobcaygeon endeavours to foster and develop respectful relationships among settlers, Indigenous neighbours and the land. play creates space for people to come together, talk, laugh and learn.” Each evening performance will include a question-and-answer session following the performance, featuring either the playwright, rice harvesters or both. Special ‘no charge’ matinees have been organized for the local secondary school districts, including mornings at Gamiing Nature Centre with the playwright and Manomin harvesters. Bobcaygeon. Jim is an accomplished mixed medium artist, and has had numerous shows displaying his work. In the past, he worked mostly in watercolour, painting “plein air”, and drawing much of his inspiration from the shores of Lake Superior. Currently, Jim works with acrylics and paints non-objective abstract. While Jim was living in Oshawa, he owned a cabin in the Kawartha Lakes region, where his family was from. Jim and his wife Louise decided to relocate to the Kawarthas full time, and now call Bobcaygeon their home. On Saturday, October 6, between 12 and 3 pm, Jim will be at Studio 358 for a meet and greet session. Everyone is invited to stop by.

Throughout the month of October, Bobcaygeon artist Jim Bell is showcasing a sampling of his nonobjective abstract art at Studio 358, located at 90 Bolton Street in Bobcaygeon. Jim paints from his soul and from his perception of what he sees. After high school Jim attended the Ontario College of Art. He was strongly influenced by “Jock” Macdonald, a member of Painters Eleven, whose goal was to promote abstract art in Canada. Jim has had an extensive art career, offering night school oil painting classes in Toronto and Oshawa, was the head of the art department teaching high school students, taught summer courses at the Ontario College of Art, and owned an art and framing store in

OSPREY AWARDS
By Kirk Winter
On September 18, the Kawartha Lakes Municipal Heritage Committee recognized three individuals and two businesses at their first ever Osprey Heritage Awards ceremony. • Tom Mohr won the award in the category Archeological Heritage; • The Pie Eyed Monk Brewery won the award in the Business Leader Heritage category; • The Heritage Vision award went to Lisa Hart; • The Architectural Heritage award went to the Old Lindsay Post Building; and • Ian McKechnie won the Community Heritage award. Ian McKechnie has been a long time fixture at the Olde Gaol Museum in Lindsay. McKechnie began as a volunteer in April of 2011 and over the last seven years has held a myriad of paid and unpaid positions at the museum. McKechnie is very proud of the transition the museum has gone through from a place that merely

warehoused artifacts to a catalyst that takes displays out into the community that make people think and ask questions. The Pie Eyed Monk Brewery was very honoured to be the recipient of the award for Business Heritage Leadership. Aaron Young, a spokesperson for the investor group, said the building restoration started with a mere shell, and they are very pleased with the look and feel of the final product. Aaron wanted to recognize the investors who were brave enough to sign on to this project which is now supplying work for 50 people in a beautifully restored old building. Jim O’Reilly bought the old Lindsay Post building nine years ago. With the help of his architect, Bernard Finney, O’Reilly began an extensive six-year renovation of the three-floor space. O’Reilly believed that a renovation that emphasized the historical look of the building was “the right thing to do.” In winning this award, O’Reilly wanted to thank the City and its staff who were cooperative and helpful during the renovation. Tom Mohr was delighted to see that the role of archeology in heritage was recognized by the Committee. Tom moved to CKL from Pickering a decade ago, and possesses an Avocational License issued by the Province that allows him to investigate and conduct surveys in pursuit of the protection of fragile archaeological resources. Many of the artifacts found in CKL represent the First Nations, clearly reflective of a residency spanning more than 10,000 years in this part of the province. Mohr had the opportunity to engage with them in curating and displaying the First Nations collection at the Olde Gaol Museum in Lindsay. Lisa Hart won her Heritage Vision award by submitting an essay to the committee on the future of heritage in CKL. Hart, the former Museums Operation Supervisor at the Olde Gaol, suggested that heritage in the City will be much stronger if the disparate groups work together and all speak with one voice. Hart believes that a combined cultural facility hosting the art gallery, archives, and museum is likely the route to go.
