Funny How That Works Everyone’s a critic. You can’t please everybody. My favourite is one my friend always used to explain people’s behaviours and choices: That’s why there’s chocolate and vanilla. Clichés. They help us justify things we can’t quite wrap our heads around. Writers are advised to avoid them— unless it’s to illustrate a point, of course. When I was a child, I was the one who ordered vanilla ice cream while everybody else chose chocolate. (Don’t quote me on this but I think that was a time when the Dairy Bar in Dundas served cones for ten and twenty-five cents. But I digress…) We can’t all agree. It’s impossible. And we certainly can’t all be alike, even if we wanted to. We can, however, use our ability to empathize, show respect, meet in the middle, as it were. Or better still, extend a little beyond. That means you still get to enjoy your chocolate, I enjoy my vanilla and our words and deeds go out to demonstrate the goodness within.
Last week, I was privileged to meet the women who lead the Bobcaygeon Helps Food Bank. One of the things we discussed can be summarized as helping others to maintain dignity during difficult times that, quite frankly, could hit any one of us at any time. Some people give of their time, some their emotional support or their money, whatever they can to--pardon the cliché-make the world better for the people with whom they cross paths. Others help in different ways. Sometimes it is as simple as eye contact and a smile. This summer, The Kawartha Dairy Company celebrates its 75th Anniversary. Good for them. I’m sure they had their challenges along the way and didn’t always see eye-to-eye with everyone. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be the success they are today. I do admit, I wonder how many cones they’ve scooped. Either way, it amounts to a lot of chocolate and vanilla. Plus, if anyone could please everybody, they probably would. Sweet. Who knew? Bella Prichard walked in to The Promoter office to file a report. She had something positive to say, and she wanted us to help her share it. “I want to tell everyone that from the time Canada Day started, it was one of the best, wellorganized days ever.” People are so negative, she said, and we should talk about the good things. “The parade, the people…Ninety percent of the crowd wore red and white or waved flags. It was a sea of red and white! I had tears in my eyes.” She added, “We’ve been in this area for eighteen years and this Canada Day in Bobcaygeon was the best ever. The kids, the bikes, the golf carts from Beach Park…and the fireworks were spectacular!” Bella said she enjoyed the celebrations with her daughter, niece, son and grandchildren. And she had one more thing to say. “We are so blessed. We are blessed to live in such a beautiful town and a beautiful country!”

TRINITY UNITED WELCOME Reverend Rodney Smith- Merkley
If you have driven on William Street (Bobcaygeon) recently, you may have noticed a new name on the Trinity U.C. signboard. This month, we welcome Rev. Rodney SmithMerkley and family to our church and community. Rodney obtained his B.S. at Guelph University and Master of Divinity at Queen’s University in 2002. On graduation, he spent 3 years with his
wife Suzanne in Bella Bella, on an island north of Vancouver Island working with native peoples. Following that posting, they returned to Ontario to the ELGIN /PORTLAND charge where he has served until presently. They have 3 children, Anderson 7, Jacob 5 and Petra 2 years. Rodney has been involved with United Church Conference activities, and is interested in canoeing and many sports. They purchased a home in Bobcaygeon and are becoming familiar with the local landscape. His first Sunday is July 29th at 10:30 a.m. when the congregation welcomes him, followed by a barbeque on the church lawn (weather permitting), so please come bring your lawn chair and enjoy! GOOD INDEED
This good deed did not go unnoticed! A few weeks ago I found myself stranded out on the highway as my motorcycle had stopped running. As this has never happened to me before, and I am fairly new to the area (one year), I did not know who to call to come and pick up my bike. I had recently met Cheryl and Danni from pawz’N’clawz, and knew that they also had a motorcycle so I called them for a number. Cheryl said, “Hang on, I will call Danni for you!” Within minutes I had a truck and a bike trailer out to pick up my bike. Danni had borrowed the trailer from a friend. Danni drove the trailer out to Dunsford and delivered my bike to Krazzy’s repair shop, and then drove me home. This good deed took about two hours of a busy man’s evening…and left me feeling that this small town of Bobcaygeon is full of people with many good deeds “stored and ready to go!”

Although I am not a member of the Canada Day Committee, I did volunteer to collect money for the fireworks on July 1st. Thanks to everyone at the Beach Park who donated money in my pail for the fireworks. Those who contributed allowed the Committee to give the town a wonderful fireworks display for everyone to enjoy.

YORK SKEET CLUB An application for the rezoning of land to accommodate a privately owned skeet club was received by Council. Prior to deciding on the merits of the application two deputations were heard by Council. As is usually the case, one was for the application while the other was against it. Margaret Wilson representing the applicant, Mr. Bill Jackson, pointed out to Council that Mr. Jackson had met or exceeded all the requirements necessary for approval of the York Skeet Club including a willingness to review the concerns of nearby residents regarding the level of noise in the area. The owner of the adjacent building, Valerie Cramer conceded that while the assessments had indeed been done the issue of noise was still unresolved, as they did not evaluate the noise level from the West. After a brief discussion Council decided to approve the application. The property is located on Curls Road in the Township of Laxton, now the City of Kawartha Lakes. PROVINCIAL GAS TAX The Provincial Government is providing a long term, stable and predictable transit funding source for Ontario municipalities by providing 2 cents per liter of provincial gas tax to improve and expand transit. The City of Kawartha Lakes will be eligible

to receive an allocation of $671,403 for the period October 1, 2011 to September 30, 2012. DISCHARGE OF FIREARMS Council received a petition from citizens requesting a change in the Discharge of Firearms By-Law 2005-329 with respect to the discharge in their area in the previous Verulam Township. Their concern is that the present bylaw prohibits the discharge of firearms in Verulam Township in the area south of Sturgeon Lake and the Little Bob River while the complainants live on the north side of Sturgeon Lake and their property is not covered by the restrictions. With the bylaw written as it is, at their residences, a neighbouring property owner is permitted to discharge a firearm in their backyard only feet away from children playing in another yard. While there was much discussion both for and against any changes, Councillor Junkin reminded Council that the application change would only be to add the residential area on the north shore of Sturgeon Lake to ensure that the discharge of firearms would be prohibited. STREET PARKING The Manager of Municipal Law Enforcement, Gordon Garfield, wanted the terminology of Parking Bylaws amended to reflect the general usage in other municipalities in Ontario as well as our neighbours to the South. In an effort to
treat all citizens of our City equally and maintain consistency, the 12-metered parking spaces in Bobcaygeon are recommended to allow free parking during the month of December (consistent with Lindsay parking meter requirements). This paid parking exemption encourages holiday shopping within the downtown core of Bobcaygeon. Also the terms “Disabled” and “Handicapped” are recommended to be replaced with “Accessible” throughout the amended by-law. Upon Council adoption of the new parking bylaw, it will be forwarded to the Attorney General for their approval of the parking fine structure. During this time the current parking bylaw 2005-283 will remain in effect. Once the fine structure is approved by the Attorney General’s Office, the City will formally repeal the current bylaw and replace it with the new one. NAMING OF THE ADDITION TO THE FENELON FALLS MUSEUM The Fenelon Falls Museum Board submitted a request to the City of its desire to name the new addition of the Fenelon Falls Museum as “The Roger Bellwood Wing”. The City is the owner of the Maryboro Lodge, operating as the Fenelon Falls Museum, located at 50 Oak Street, Fenelon Falls. Over the past 3 years substantial renovations have been undertaken to restore the exterior of the museum as well as the construction of an addition. The majority of

funding to complete this project has been provided through Federal Heritage funding, and the Fenelon Falls C.H.E.S.T. Fund. A local volunteer committee that was originally constituted by the late Mr. Roger Bellwood has led this project. This Committee has worked with staff to ensure municipal interests were represented as the project developed. AMBULANCE FUNDING The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care will provide the City an additional annualized base funding of up to $828,200 with respect to the land ambulance grant for the 50:50 partnership for 2012. THE KAWARTHA LAKES MUNICIPAL AIRPORT Council approved the application to pass a bylaw to establish a municipal service board to be known as “Kawartha Lakes Municipal Airport Board” to govern, control, operate, and manage the City’s provision of a municipal airport in the City of Kawartha Lakes. However Council did not pass it without considerable lobbying for and against the proposal. Prominent in opposition was Councillor Donna Villemaire who asked for a deferral of the application to allow time to review the Business Plan. Others were concerned about the broad powers being promulgated by the application. Those in favour were adamant that on matters of substance the Airport Board are still required to have it reviewed by Council. The application passed in a recorded vote. SATELLITE BINS FOR SCRAP METAL A bylaw to licence, regulate and govern Salvage Yard Businesses in the City of Kawartha Lakes was unanimously passed. At issue was concern that without municipal controls, businesses, if they so desired, could, without restraint, establish a drop off site for the public to get rid of their scrap metal. The application pointed out that a business can have a place for their personal scrap metal but they could not actively solicit the public to bring scrap metal to them.

WOW! The 3rd annual Fresh Water Summit in Coboconk was amazing!
Our Friday night reception at the wharf was a huge success with over 250 attendees. The wharf featured a boat parade called Christmas in June with prizes awarded for The Griswold and Charlie Brown boats. The Saucy Willow Inn and the OPP boat were the big winners. I just want to remind everyone we are Canada’s Fresh Water Summit 365 days a year with no need to wait for our next special event as we look forward to seeing you all year long. I want to say a big THANK YOU to our Fresh Water Summit Committee who worked all year to present this event. It’s a pleasure to work with such a great group of people. Classics on Kent returns on July 15th 2012, bringing the magic of classic cars to historic downtown Lindsay. Last year, an estimated 18,000 people came to see hundreds of classic cars and trucks at the 2011 Classics on Kent Car Show. For this year’s show, the organizers added new features and kept affordable registration prices for cars registering for this event. A LICK AND A GULP The Kawartha Dairy Company owns its own cow. Truth is, Kawartha Dairy owns three cows. Made of pre-cast concrete, the first cow was placed on the roof of the Minden store in 1987, followed by two additional landmark locations in Bobcaygeon and Bancroft. Perhaps more familiar is the blue logo with The Kawartha Dairy Company in white lettering. It indicates the spots where customers can find their favourite premium dairy products: Milk, chocolate milk, cream, butter, ice cream cakes, shakes, and eggnog. And the wonderful, creamy, scooped ice cream cones that shout: It’s summer! Known far and wide for premium dairy products, 2012 marks the Dairy’s 75th anniversary. According to Blake Frazer, Vice President and General Manager, everyone is invited to enjoy. Two of the official celebrations--Friday, August 3 in Minden and Saturday, August 4 in Bobcaygeon--will feature clowns, entertainment and pure family fun, along with the cows in plain view. “It will be a modest celebration for our loyal following of fans,” he says.

These two particular cottage-country outlets have become, he says, “Incredibly popular for generations. They are iconic as a summer destination.” Frazer says he receives emails from parents who say their parents took them there for ice cream and now they are doing the same with their own children. Kawartha Dairy is deeply rooted in family history all the way back to the day it originated with Jack and Ila Crowe. Ownership remains in the family with the Crowe’s sons and grandchildren. Today, Frazer’s focus is where the business is now, and the direction in which it’s going. Approximately 125 employees work fulltime or part-time year round, with a surge that doubles the number during the summer season. Staff encompasses management, retail, students, shipping and plant employees who are all essential to the process. Frazer explains Kawartha Dairy is successful within the dairy industry yet they are considered a small player in this “massive industry.” The competition, he says, is huge in ice cream and milk, nationally and multi-nationally. “We’re having a phenomenal year,” he says, attributing the current success to exceptional weather and strong geographical growth for the organization. “We are one of the few independents left. Others have chosen the path of acquisition.” The introduction of Kawartha Dairy’s distribution of products to new markets is ongoing. Ontario is a large growth area. Of the eight current retail locations, one can choose the drive-thru option in Peterborough, Huntsville and Barrie stores. “Our milk shakes are still prepared the oldfashioned way,” Frazer says, “Scooping the ice
cream and blending it with milk.” They may take a minute longer to make, but it’s worth the wait. Customers may choose from approximately 47 flavours including yogurt and sherbet. Kawartha Dairy still uses fresh two percent milk versus reducing to one percent milk fat products. BOBCAYGEON HELPS Service With Respect
Bobcaygeon Helps. A lot. It is the local emergency Food Bank. Without it, approximately thirteen percent of Bobcaygeon’s population could go hungry. The current front-line leadership team is Food Manager, Laura Fisher, General Manager, Sue McGill, and Assistant General Manager, Cindy Bevan. Under their direction, a small army of volunteers provides the energy and person-power necessary to keep it all running. Two essential ingredients make Bobcaygeon Helps possible: Regular contributions of food and money from the community, and the volunteers. Seventy volunteers, including Board of Directors and local clergy, jump in to order, shop, raise funds, stock shelves, label, inspect, and serve clients. That’s just the usual operation; there are special times of the year - Christmas, for example - when the need, workload and preparations increase. The Food Bank is a non-profit organization. It is open Tuesdays and Fridays from 2 to 4 pm; in July and August, it is open Fridays only. During the school year, community support includes breakfast and lunch programs for local students. McGill says, “It’s quite frightening. Based on statistics from the Chamber of Commerce, we have 401 registered clients out of 3,000 permanent Bobcaygeon residents.” Men, women, youth. Many are children. McGill will tell you she has a strong social conscience. “As a Canadian, it is my moral responsibility to make sure these children have enough nutritious food to grow up healthy.” Cindy Bevan and Laura Fisher second that. After all, when a person walks through the door of Christ Church Anglican on Sherwood Avenue, he or she probably does not want to be there. Compassion and awareness are evident, as is their determination to provide service with respect. “People judge each other, but people don’t live in their shoes,” McGill says of their clients. “It is society’s problem.” What do they need? Non-perishable foods with good expiry dates. Personal care products. Money.
As items come in or volunteers purchase and pick up products, they are methodically inspected, labeled if required, and neatly stacked on shelves or in the refrigerator or freezer, ready for use. The site is spotless. While generosity abounds, it is never enough to sustain ongoing provision of goods. There is always an urgent need for contributions from the community--because there are always clients who need the assistance. A key to Bobcaygeon Helps’ uniqueness is its independence. “We are the only independent food bank in the City of Kawartha Lakes,” explains McGill. This means the donations of food and funds all remain within the community. Bobcaygeon Helps also has a wish list. Says McGill, “We would love one more fridge or an industrial cooler with wire baskets for fresh produce. And a lift to make the site accessible to seniors and people with disabilities. It’s a serious problem.” As a message to visitors, cottagers, boaters, professional services, clubs and businesses and residents: Contributions may be made at any church in Bobcaygeon and both grocery stores. DISCRETION
A Double-Edged Sword
Our elected and appointed officials have the responsibility of exercising discretion…and so they should. However, the power must not only be used but also seen to be used judiciously and evenly if people are to trust these officials. This is a serious and topical theme described in Cottage Wars. In the novel, an issue arises over whether a newly constructed house is a 1-storey or a 1 ½-storey building. Under the Official Plan of the municipality, a structure with a main floor and a lower level with a walkout are termed a 1 ½-storey with certain setback requirements. This seems clear enough and thus not an issue requiring the use of discretion. In this instance, however, the Planner, in a written statement, stated that he was using his discretionary powers and, in this instance, ruled that this house was a 1-storey and thus had reduced setback requirements. In this example, as it so happened, the house was still too large for the property and exceeded the setback requirements regardless of the designation of the structure. Why, then, was this part of the Official Plan ignored? Along with other issues described in Cottage Wars, one can only guess the answer to this. When municipal property tax revenues are the number one priority, the even-handed use of discretion can be jeopardized.

This is the season we have waited for! Remember all winter when we thought about sipping lemonade, cold and fresh, sitting under a big shade tree watching the boats go through the locks? Yes, this is the time to get out there and enjoy! Our summer program is packed with fun. Our camps are booked, the events are happening and the excitement is endless. Caygeon Carnival on July 28 is approaching; plan on a full day of fun for the whole family. On August 3, Driftwood Theatre is presenting, Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Nights’ Dream at Settlers’ Village. It should be a great performance by the travelling troupe. We received some interesting donations recently: An iron hospital crib, circa 1860’s and a tabletop croquet set circa 1885. Both are unique and welcome additions to the collection. Please drop up and take a tour around the Village--it looks wonderful. Our volunteers do a good job of groundskeeping, cleaning and artifact displays. Come and talk to our staff or just visit our animals! You and your guests are always welcome. We want you to start getting ready for the fall, so I am letting the cat out of the bag, so to speak. We are having a pie baking contest! Now, I do not mean a pie buying contest; rather buy the flour, shortening, etc., make the pastry and cooking the pie just like Mom used to make. These delights will be judged at our Harvest Festival, along with preserves and many others attractions. So mark the date and start practicing. Your family will love it! Hope to see you at the official opening of the Waterwheel Project on July 15. Also, the Bobcaygeon Art Show is on July 13, 14 and 15. I heard it is going to be the best ever!

• Avoid needless exposure to the sun. • Don’t let infants or children play or sleep in the sun in a playpen, carriage, stroller. • Protect your eyes by wearing UV blocking sunglasses. • If you can’t cover up, use a sunscreen containing a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 15, verify it has both UVA and UVB protection, re-apply every two hours and after sweating or swimming. • Avoid using indoor sun lamps. Choose shade for outdoor activities. • Get children used to wearing sunscreen lotion, paying particular attention to the most exposed parts--the lips, face, neck, shoulders, back, knees and tops of feet. • It is fine to use both sunscreen and insect repellents when outdoors. BEAT THIS HEAT
It’s another hot, summer day and the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit warns people to take precautions to beat the heat and protect their health. Hot and humid conditions can take a toll on the health of people, especially those most vulnerable to heat-related illness such as infants and young children, older adults, people with chronic medical conditions, and individuals who work outside. Adverse health effects can include cramping, weakness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and fainting. Heat stroke is a medical emergency that can prove fatal if not treated. Symptoms of heat stroke include headache, dizziness, confusion, and fainting. Skin can also become hot and dry, or there may be sweating due to high body temperature. Prevention is the best remedy to avoiding heatrelated illness: • Never leave a child or pet in a parked car, or sleeping outside in direct sunlight. • Drink plenty of water and diluted natural fruit juices through the day to stay cool and hydrated. Avoid consuming alcohol, coffee, and cola. • Eat light, cool foods, and avoid using the oven or other hot appliances. • If you can, avoid going out in the sun or heat. Doing strenuous activities on very hot and humid days is not recommended. • Stay in air-conditioned rooms, either at home, a friend’s place or public places such as malls, libraries, movie theatres, community centres. • Take a cool bath or shower periodically or cool down with cool, wet towels. •

We hope by now you’ve had the chance to take at least one live tour of the beautiful public gardens in Bobcaygeon area as described in the last issue of The Promoter. Kindly follow along as we continue Unlock The Summer Garden Tour Part 2! We begin at the corner of Need & Boyd Streets were there is pair of triangular rockeries. These rockeries are home to dwarf conifers, dense ground covers, miniature spring bulbs and sun-loving annuals. A variety of textures, shapes, and colours provide an eye-pleasing display for many months of the year thanks to the efforts of Joyce Bryon and her assistants. The Trent Canal Monument Bed which is best viewed from the bridge, the water or Canal Street contains successive plantings of forsythia, lilac, and smoke bush. They provide an accent background for lilies, daffodils and summer plants. West of the bridge is the Lockmaster’s Bed where vibrant helliopsis, white carpet lilies, potentilla, Mrs. Belcher’s phlox and red begonias supply summer colour for boaters and others who enjoy the nearby park. The War Memorial Cenotaph Bed located on the edge of the park along Bolton Street, the Watchman’s House Bed, the Canal Sign Bed and the plantings at the Horticultural Office at the Swing Bridge complete the canal landscaping under the custodianship of Elizabeth Williamson’s group. Renewed in 2007 under the expert direction of Ingrid Whitney, the gardens at Rokeby Market Square replaced one of our Society’s first public gardens. The three island beds represent the three islands of Bobcaygeon. The heritage fountain was a source of drinking water for many years. The horsehead hitching posts hark back to an earlier era. Heirloom peonies, astilbe, lamium, rudbeckia, iris and other plants create a pleasant place to enjoy a rest on one of the benches. The Colorado Green spruce is lit up for the Christmas season. Joe Hayes heads up the team that tends these lovely gardens. Finally, it is worth seeking out the garden of which many of us are very proud, namely the Children’s Garden at Kawartha Settlers’ Village on Dunn Street. “Teach them while they are young and they will follow through all their lives,” is an adage promoted by the Ontario Horticultural Association. In 2003, our late President David Marsden and others, designed a junior program which fit the curricula of grades 3-5. A parcel of land at KSV was set aside for our Society and the Bobcaygeon Public
School to use as a settler’s vegetable garden. Each year, traditional vegetables and companion flowers are planted by the children. The produce goes to the local Food Source. Some of children return in October to create and compose profiles for a family of scarecrows which are installed for the autumn. Our newest project is the revamping of the gardens created by the late Earl Murray next to the Waterwheel and Grist Mill at KSV. This is one of our 90th Anniversary Projects. It is still a work in progress, most of which will be in place for the Society’s Garden Tour of July 7th. We welcome you to enjoy touring the public gardens for the next months as we continue to unlock the summer through the love and beauty of horticulture. Good gardening.

Special Event Transportation The City of Kawartha Lakes Trolley Management Board announces the Town Trolley will hit the streets of Lindsay on Sunday July 15th. It provides unique transportation and tour services to residents and visitors during the Classics on Kent, Touch-a-Truck and Lindsay Country Jamboree special events. The Town Trolley will be available on Sunday July 15th from 11am – 6pm, with no service being offered from 2pm – 3pm. The Town Trolley offers this experience to both tour the town of Lindsay and access convenient, inexpensive transportation to and from the downtown core to special events throughout Lindsay. The Trolley Heritage Route and the Special Events Route both consist of a historical tour of downtown Lindsay including such sites as the Olde Gaol Museum, The Academy Theatre, Memorial Park and Rivera Park. Passengers can hop on and off the Trolley at any of the convenient stops along the route to shop, dine or explore at their own pace. Regular fares for the Special Events Route are by donation with a suggested minimum of $2.00. Fares must be paid when boarding the trolley; tickets cannot be purchased in advance. Bathing can be quite an adventure for pets and it is a great way to rid your pet’s coat of any dirt, dander and debris. Before a bath, brush your pet’s fur to help loosen tangles and stimulate the skin. Always use a shampoo that is designed especially for your animal. Shampoo for humans can be harmful to their skin and destroy your pet’s natural oils resulting in itchy, flaky, irritated skin. Once you’ve pre-rinsed your pet, lather him up with your pet-friendly shampoo. Make sure to save your pet’s face for last and use a damp cloth to clean around the eyes, ears and nose. After a thorough scrub, make sure you rinse your pet really well, as soap residue can cause skin irritations. Be prepared with lots of towels! Rub your pet down with a towel to absorb any excess water and finish

Brushing is another common grooming routine that should be done on a regular basis. Brushing is essential to the health of your pet’s skin and coat as it removes dead hair and skin, prevents odours and spreads the natural oils in their coats. It is one of the simplest routines and one of the most necessary. Brushes are available in a wide variety to accommodate different types of pets and coats. Remember, the more often you brush your pet, the less often you have to bathe them!

Ears can collect dirt and are a prime place for infection. Keeping your pet’s ears clean is a great way to keep him healthy and prevent illness. Do regular ear checks at home by looking inside your pet’s ears. Take note of the colour. The inside of your pet’s ears should be a healthy pink. Wipe the outer ear using pet ear wipes and be careful not to touch what you cannot easily see when cleansing the inside of the ears. Symptoms of poor ear conditions include sensitivity to touch, brown, black or yellow discharge, shaking or continuous head tilting and foul odour. Your veterinarian should treat these symptoms immediately.

Nail trimming is important for both cats and dogs as lengthy nails can put unnecessary pressure on your pet’s feet. It is important to play with your pet’s paws to get them used to the feel of having their paws handled. Cats have brittle nails that can easily shatter so it is best to use a nail clipper suited for cats. Dogs have stronger nails so a stronger nail clipper is necessary. Here’s an excellent strategy for the finicky pet: trim your pet’s nails over the course of a few days. There’s no rule that says it has to be done all at once. Helen was born in Collingwood, Ontario. After graduating in Nursing from Oshawa General Hospital, she raised her family of three children. She developed and maintained a keen interest in the Arts. She took the opportunity to study under several well-known Canadian and American artists such as Sterling Edwards, Edwin Matthews, Zoltan Szabo, Mary Lampman, Brian Atyeo, Enid Reid and Art Cunanan. Consolidating her skills and knowledge into a striking talent, Helen creates her vibrant images into lovely works that are easy on the eye. Helen’s paintings are spontaneous and show the joy and happiness that is her personality as well. Helen has traveled extensively in North America including: British Columbia, Alaska, California, the Bahamas, throughout the U.S. and Italy, but lives in Bobcaygeon in the summer months and the Bahamas during our winters. Her artwork has been exhibited locally and in the United States, the Bahamas, and in several places in Ontario. Summer’s here and many young people need jobs to earn money to put toward their education or help pay for hobbies or activities. A job also gives a person good experience and an opportunity to get a taste of different kinds of work. Help is available through VCCS and their Employment Centre for Students. There are many great positions open throughout the City of Kawartha Lakes, so whether students seek opportunities in Human Resources, Technician or Customer Service, the VCCS Student Centre can help them find the right fit for their interests and skills. VCCS staff can help students prepare for a successful job search with Resume Preparation, Orientation to the Workplace, Interview Skills and Job Search all being topics students can access. Through their Outreach Services, VCCS hosts workshops at libraries in rural areas throughout CKL. Workshops are running through June and July in Bobcaygeon, Dunsford, Woodville, Norland, Kirkfield and several other sites. Check out the VCCS website to register and for upcoming dates. Employers and students benefit from Summer Job Service, a program that provides a $2 per hour wage subsidy to employers who hire a student for the summer. Students who qualify for the SJS program must be between 15-30 years old and returning to school in the fall; the job must be at least 35 hours per week. Last summer 132 employers and 495 students participated in the program. Smart Serve training is available for people 18 and older. A fee of $25 applies to Smart Serve training which allows certified people to serve alcohol in bars, restaurants and at events. In addition, the free Customer Service Excellence workshop teaches students how to offer outstanding Customer Service when working with the public. VCCS also provides services for non-students and adults. Their office is located in the Whitney Town Centre at 370 Kent Street West, Lindsay (beside Wild Wing). Here are just a couple of family tips from EatRight Ontario (eatrightontario.ca): • Plan regular meals at home as a family. Busy schedules can make this a challenge but do your best to have at least one meal together each day. • Eat at the table. Enjoy time together without TV, toys or other distractions. • Make one meal for everyone. • Offer everybody the same foods at mealtimes. Avoid making something special for ‘picky’ eaters. Children and youth will learn to like many
different foods only if they are encouraged to try them. Making only one meal also saves money and prevents waste. • Set a good example and choose the healthy foods. Did you know that vegetables and fruit make up the largest arc of Canada’s Food Guide rainbow? FIGHT THE BITE Tips for a Safe Summer
This year’s warm spring and summer weather has had an unpleasant side effect. West Nile virus has been detected in the province earlier than in most years. Although there have been no reports of mosquitoes testing positive for West Nile virus in the area served by the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit, positive results have been confirmed in the Toronto and Durham area. The Health Unit urges local residents to fight the bite to protect themselves from West Nile virus. While most people who get West Nile virus do not experience any symptoms, a small number of individuals may develop flu-like symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, muscle weakness and stiff neck. In some cases, people may develop more serious symptoms including confusion, tremors, and a sudden sensitivity to light. People who suspect they have West Nile virus should seek immediate medical attention. People can protect themselves by: • Wearing long-sleeved shirts, jackets, pants, hats and socks when outside, especially during the evening, nighttime or dawn when mosquitoes are most active. • Using insect repellent containing DEET on exposed skin. Be sure to follow Health Canada’s safety tips on using personal insect repellent.
•C hecking that window and door screens fit tight and do not have holes through which mosquitoes can enter the home. Last year, 78 Ontario residents contracted West Nile virus and 278 “pools” or batches of mosquitoes tested positive for the virus across the province. There were no positive mosquito pools in the City of Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton County or Northumberland County last year. Blue Canoe Program Launches on Kawartha Lakes

Landowners along the shorelines of Balsam, Cameron, Pigeon, and Sturgeon lakes can expect a visit from the Blue Canoe. The program was launched in the Ken Reid Conservation Area by Kawartha Conservation and lake management planning partners. The Blue Canoe is part of the early implementation of lake management plans being developed for lakes within the Kawarthas, and supported by the City of Kawartha Lakes. Blue Canoe members are trained stewardship staff who will provide personalized advice, recommendations, and information to shoreline property owners. They will be travelling from dock to dock by canoe, or door to door by car, depending on the weather. They will also be at local events and lake association meetings. As part of their on-site visits and meetings, they will help property owners identify opportunities for

Chambers of Commerce represent their business communities on matters important to their members’ financial health. This is accomplished by serving as a good resource centre for a range of business needs and practices and by talking to governments on issues of interest.
The Bobcaygeon and Area Chamber does all this, which is one good reason for being a member. Volunteers and office staff add a great deal more. The seven major events: the Canada-U.S. Walleye Tournament, Community Bikefest and Cruisefest attract thousands of people--and, let’s face it, generates money. That’s a good second reason! Finally, driver’s licenses, vehicle license plates and health cards can be issued and renewed in minutes, compared to the long wait times elsewhere. Supervised exams taken in the office, paperwork photocopied at the village’s lowest rates and faxes sent at base cost. With almost 260 members, an 18-member, all-volunteer board of directors and lots of event-related volunteers, the Chamber of Commerce is a very important part of our business community and our people. Business owners and communityminded individuals can take out memberships at the region’s lowest rates: $163.85 for full Business privileges and $39.55 for the supportive Associate status.
