Paper Cuts It’s All In The Name I got my first paper cut at The Promoter office last week. It happened as I stacked the pile of completed hard copy into the file folder I named, Doneski (pronounce “done-skee.”) No significant blood loss so I continued to organize the space around my new desk. And that is when I discovered the previous editor’s file called, Stuff I Will Want Back If I Throw It Away Now. Sweet. I get it. I know her. I suspected the information contained therein could prove useful to me. A little goldmine of ideas and contacts for reference. I peeked inside the apparently forgotten file. There was one single sheet of lined paper on which was scrawled, “Called Larry & left a message.” Great. This required thought. Okay, who is this guy? Does his family live near here year ‘round? What

is his dog’s name? And how will Larry celebrate Father’s Day? Will he even celebrate Father’s Day? Perhaps he’s connected with the Fresh Water Summit in Coby. Or Bike Fest in Bobcaygeon. Maybe he’s a plumber. The thing is, file folder names— both hard copy and computer—are pretty important in the big scheme of things. Just like pet names. And people’s names. For example, mine is Susan. Not Sue. I know a Sue who doesn’t want to be called Susan. It’s possible that Larry goes by Lar. His mother might have called him Lawrence. I glance back at my paper cut. Could it be some kind of Karma for assuming ownership of the file folder? My plan is to use Stuff I Will Want Back If I Throw It Away Now for really important—or equally obscure—notes for myself. Now, I will file this column in my own file folder which I renamed the Larry Doneski file. Happy Father’s Day, all.

Alright so the weather did not cooperate with us for Unlock The Summer but really what happened to this event is disappointing. The Parade was a fiasco from start to finish. The lead band apparently had no idea as to a route. Observing from my store, I saw them literally quit at the bridge, march into the parking lot and jump into their cars and leave. Amazingly, four floats from the parade actually made it down Main Street. The rest disappeared, never to be seen on this side of the bridge. Thank you to those participants who did include us and actually continue down Main Street. Why do we not establish one set Parade route? Why no Parade Marshall? The Santa Claus parade put on by the Lions Club is the only parade that includes Main Street and it is properly organized. Apparently we are to be ignored as always. The people and businesses on Main Street are seemingly second class in all the events put on in this Town. I arranged for seven wonderful women to attend the Fashion Parade, to promote Kaleidoscope but

also to support our Unlock The Summer event. Yes, it was cold and wet but the show did go on. Only four stores participated. What happened to the rest? Unfortunately, due to weather and lack of tourists, the venue was moved onto Bolton Street at the last moment. Did anyone inform us of this? No, we kind of figured it out for ourselves. We are not a separate community over here across the bridge. We pay our taxes, etc., and are very much part of this Town called Bobcaygeon. I will continue to support the Town Events even though it is evident that I continue very much alone.

U.S. Walleye tournament
This past weekend Bobcaygeon hosted the Canada U.S. Walleye tournament with registration starting Friday and fishing on Saturday and Sunday. I live on the Little Bob River and would like to congratulate the tournament committee with Tom Hunt chairman, on a job well done. When the boats were coming and going to the check-in at the Bobcaygeon Verulam community centre, the boats all maintained a single file and 10 km speed limit. Also, the parking of the vehicles and trailers was done in an organized manner at the Fair Grounds, which kept the majority of the vehicles off the streets of Bobcaygeon. Again I would like to thank Tom Hunt and his organizing committee for a job well done.

Dirty Duck
It’s a “Dirty Duck” that swims and pees in its own pond! The Chamber of Commerce of Bobcaygeon wants you! In the spring, the phone calls go out to all business owners to a become member of the Chamber of Commerce. Advertising by the Chamber will promote your business for a fee of $129.00. Last year I became a member. I went to the meetings as a newbie and listened to the other members planning the events for this town. Where improvements could be made, I voiced suggestions. I also made sure the North-end Merchants got a look in, by having the Market Square closed and put in a band, that was well-received by the public. Also adding to the event, having more for people to come and see, and discovering there’s more to Bobcaygeon than just Bolton Street. But it seemed like anything that was suggested was met with opposition. However, small strides were made to have the road closed at Front Street for events like Unlock the Summer and Midnight Madness, removing the danger of vehicles doing u-turns. Last year, the same as this year due to poor planning, the parade started at the Legion and ended as it came through the barricade at Front Street, cutting off all of the Market Square Businesses. I was informed prior to the event by a representative of the Chamber that the parade would go all the way to Prince Street taking in at least a few of the businesses on the Main Street. I was elated. But it never happened. The Chamber wants the North-end Merchants to become members and wants us to support the
events and then they cut us off. “If you don’t play the way the Chamber wants you to, they’ll take their marbles and go home.” At this weekend’s events, it was a fiasco. Police cars blocked the roads at the end of Bolton Street. The swing bridge was closed to walking traffic so no one could come to the north side of town if they wanted to. I do not blame the North-end Merchants one

bit for not joining the Chamber. Many before myself have tried to get the north end up and running but have failed due to the thinking that surrounds the Chamber and Bolton Street. More planning is needed for events. Maybe a parade marshal, and establish one route for all parades to end the spectators’ confusion. Stop the illegal release of mass balloons that pollute the tourism we are trying to promote. Yes, there is a law! I am not biased as my business also sells balloons. When is this town going to operate as a whole? When will the past, of being two towns, be dropped so we can amalgamate into the one town we are? Bobcaygeon!

Toronto, June 2012 Leafminers are cyclical and cedar trees will survive! On the way to the Kawarthas from Toronto, the lush colors of the farm crops are noticeably contrasted with the brown color of cedars. Talking with Kathy Lutrell, a Terrestrial Resource Analyst with Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority, I found out that in 2012, the browning of the cedar trees is due to a leafminers infestation. Cedar leafminers are insects that feed inside the

leaves when they are in the caterpillar stage, causing the leaves to wither and turn brown. Most cedar trees survive, but they can die if they are infested for a few years in a row. Leaf loss is especially noticeable in the spring and trees can lose up to 80 per cent of their leaves to leafminers. There is no need to control cedar leafminers unless a tree is severely infested, has suffered repeated infestations over a few years and/or is stressed by drought. Natural controls, such as parasites, will eventually reduce the leafminer population. Cedar trees have a beautiful color and a lovely aroma. A popular evergreen, cedars are prone to both disease and insect infestation, just like any other trees.

Al Horsman, the outgoing Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Kawartha Lakes scheduled a meeting with the media apparently in response to numerous requests. He planned an opening statement, followed by a Question and Answer (Q and A) session. Only two reporters attended, one from The Promoter and one from the Lindsay Post. Horsman’s last day is June 15. Opening Statement “The current economic climate the City of Kawartha Lakes faces many pressures especially in respect to growth. Rather than avoid these challenges, Mayor and Council and the dedicated staff of the City of Kawartha Lakes have made great strides towards addressing them and I have every confidence they will build on this work over the next few years. Examples of successes to date include among others: • Approval of the Official Plan, • Initiation of the Secondary Plans, • Improved EMS response time of over 2 minutes, • Successful signing of strategic partnership agreements, • Securing of various grant awards (e.g. SWI) and the NW Trunk. For the near and future years: • Successes related to economic development of the Knowledge Economy with specific focus on water and agriculture, • Effective management of aggregate production • Improved connections including transportation and broadband and enhancing tourism.”

Questions and Answer Period Q. Why the move and why now? A. I am a single parent and I take my role very seriously. If I were to stay here, picking up my children will require 1.5 hrs each way. It will be much shorter in the new job. It was never the job itself nor is it for more money, it never was. It is purely for personal reasons. Q. How do you see the City faring administratively after you leave? A. I believe the administrative structure of the City is appropriate for the foreseeable future. Shortly after I arrived, I took on the responsibilities of the Human Resource function and that of the Director, Rudy Huisman, Director of Finance. I then established a Senior Management Committee made up of Staff and Councillors who are responsible for providing oversight and at times advice on issues that will be going to Council for approval. Q. How do you see the Future of the City of Kawartha Lakes unfolding? A. The CKL is well placed for the future. We have Capital Works Projects ongoing at the moment and that is as it should be. I am referring to the North West Trunk, solid waste and Water and Waste Water. We need to build the infrastructure for the future. The City of Kawartha Lakes will attract new business and you will see a population growth. Even now I have seen more inquiries coming in due to the North West Trunk. As the 407E expands to Harmony and beyond, there will be an increase in businesses and people coming to the area. It will start initially around the Scugog area and then moving on through Lindsay and the rest of our area. You will see quite a difference by 2030.

Remember the aroma of freshly-varnished floors on the first day of school? Do you recall playing Prisoner’s Goal under the maple trees at recess? Did you learn to tell time on a Roman numeral wall clock ? Are spelling bees, Christmas concerts and dusty chalkboard brushes some of your recollections of attending a one-room school? On Saturday June 23 from 1 to 4 p.m., former pupils and teachers of School Section #4 (S.S. # 4,) Verulam Township will gather at the school house of their youth to share such memories. Located on Cosh’s Road, north and west of Bobcaygeon, the building, once known as Ingram’s School, is a century old this year. In 1912, after fire destroyed the wooden frame school built on the Patterson farm in the 1870s, a large brick school was built by the community on the same site. It was fitted with one large classroom lit by five large windows on the east, a separate library and teacher’s room on the front , a girls’ and a boys’ staircase entrance, two cloakrooms on the north and south and a cemented basement containing a woodburning furnace, an open space for winter recreation, plus two indoor water closets. At the time, it was considered to be one of the best equipped schools in the township. The school was closed due to regional amalgamation in 1969. Since then, it has served as a private residence, undergoing significant renovations through the years. The current owners, Terry and Anne Higgins, share a deep passion for the history of the schoolhouse. They have generously agreed to open its doors to former pupils and teachers on June 23 to celebrate the building’s centennial year. Guided tours for former pupils and teachers will

HAUGHTINESS ENDS IN NAUGHTINESS
People who take themselves too seriously often are oblivious of the laughter around them. To illustrate this, here is a brief example from COTTAGE WARS.
by David Hersey It is the monthly meeting of the Committee of Alterations. Property owners are assembled to speak for and against Variance Applications. A slight commotion is observed at the rear of the Chamber as two people take their seats in the area marked PRESS. Each is dressed to the nines. It is Elmer and Amber Etherington, here to speak in opposition to the Variance Application of Sally and Walter Wilkins. Elmer is attired in a custom-tailored brown suit with a snow-white shirt and brown tie. He is wearing highly polished brown boots. As for Amber, all eyes stare at her luxurious full-length mink coat which, with well-practiced flourish, she discards and, miraculously, it lands perfectly over the backs of two chairs. The Meeting is brought to order and soon the Wilkins’ Application is before the Committee. And now it is Elmer Etherington’s opportunity to speak against the Application. He announces that he is a successful Sanitary Engineer in York City and is a generous contributor in the community. At this, several pockets of laughter can be heard and “poop,” muttered and, again, more laughter. The Chairperson attempts to silence the laughter and at the same time admonishes Elmer to confine his remarks to his opposition to the Variance. Elmer resumes reading from his notes and three times is warned to, “Get to the point.” Elmer ends by being

Environmental Hero of the Year for 2011 Rod Martin, Bobcaygeon resident and active member of KPOW (Kawartha Protect Our Water) and the KLSA (Kawartha Lakes Stewards Association) has been named Environmental Hero of the Year for 2011. Council established the annual award for Environmental Hero of the Year in January 2004. The City of Kawartha Lakes Environmental Advisory Committee (CKLEAC), originators of the award, makes recommendations on deserving recipients. An educator in Toronto, Martin was known to take his students on excursions to raise their awareness of the environment. He also worked as an educational assistant for the Toronto Region Conservation Authority. After retirement, he spent ten years at the Kortwright Centre for Conservation in Woodbridge, where he studied the interdependence of ecosystems and renewable energy. His membership in KLSA included volunteering to assist the Kawartha Conservation Authority to collect water samples in Sturgeon Lake, testing phosphorous
and nitrogen as part of their Lake Management Plan project. It was in August 2011, while on Sturgeon Lake, Martin noted the rapid growth of what he suspected to be blue-green algae. He alerted both the Ministry of the Environment and the Public Health Unit who quickly investigated, posted cautionary signage at the beaches and issued public warnings against any use of the water. Blue-green algae, when disturbed, releases a toxic substance that can cause severe illness to any human or animal that is exposed to even a small amount, regardless of whether or not the water has been boiled. Martin’s years of environmental experience allowed him to recognize the threat and he acted quickly to initiate corrective action. It was for this timely action Rod Martin was recommended as the Environmental Hero of 2011. Says Lou Probst, Chair Environmental Advisory Committee, “We can leave future generations a legacy of clean water and hope for the future, thanks to the commitment of caring stewards such as Rod Martin.”

In this position, Aaron has the opportunity to be involved in the community by way of responding to emergency situations, but also as a public educator/trainer, mentor and fundraiser. Aaron is an active member of the Lindsay and District Labour Council. Within this role, Aaron fundraises for local organizations such as; Big Brothers and Big Sisters, The Boys and Girls Club, Public Access Defibrillation Programs in local schools and Kawartha Lakes Food Source. Aaron has been employed with the City of Kawartha Lakes in the Municipal Law Enforcement Division as an Officer since 2001. You watch for your companion to come back to open the door. You want to get out. Drink some water. Breathe. Cool down. Someone, please? Glance my way. The next time you consider leaving a dog—or cat, child, or any helpless living being—take a few minutes and sit in your car first. Just because it doesn’t seem too hot outside doesn’t mean it is safe. Know that when the temperature is 22 degrees outdoors, it can reach up to 47 degrees in the vehicle in less than an hour. Opening a window or putting up a sun shield does not keep it cool enough for safety. According to the Animal Welfare Act, it is your legal duty to care for your animal and if you put it at risk, you risk prosecution. And you risk the life of the being who trusts you. Bystanders, if you observe this potential distress, please, take action and notify the owner immediately. Report to authorities. Whatever you do, just make the rescue. If you don’t speak up, somebody else might not either.

If there weren’t already compelling enough reasons for you to quit smoking, think about the risk to your vision. While it’s well known that smoking can cause cancer, heart disease and stroke, up until recently there has been little awareness about the fact that smoking can also cause serious and permanent vision loss. New regulations for tobacco products labeling in Canada mean that, as of June 19, retailers can only legally sell cigarettes that display new health warnings, including the fact that smoking increases your risk of blindness. Specifically, the warning points to the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is the leading cause of vision loss in Canadians 50 years and older. We’ve known for some time that primary and second-hand smoke from cigarettes is a major risk factor for AMD. Current smokers have up to four times the risk of developing AMD compared to non-smokers or past smokers. Smokers may also develop the disease about 10 years earlier than non-smokers. PRHC DIABETES FOOT HEALTH INITIATIVE
Staff Trained by Kawartha Total Foot Care Kawartha Total Foot Care Centre provided training for a new initiative coordinated through the Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) that will make inroads in preventing and treating serious foot problems caused by diabetes. Kawartha Total Foot Care Centre chiropodists instructed PRHC staff within the hospital’s Diabetes Education Centre on diabetic foot health screening. Newly diagnosed diabetics will undergo a structured evaluation, and those at risk will be referred to chiropody clinics for advanced podiatric care within the PRHC’s catchment area. “The benefit of this effort is that it’s multidisciplinary,” says Kawartha Total Foot Care Centre chief chiropodist, Nadine Webster. “It brings specialists, family physicians, chiropodists, nurses, and other health professionals together into a cohesive and comprehensive approach to care that can only serve to further benefit patient outcomes. We’re incredibly excited to be able to play a central role.” People with diabetes are prone to serious foot health conditions that can result in amputations and potentially life-threatening infections. Diabetes is the number one cause of lower limb amputations in Canada, apart from accidental trauma. The initiative will launch late this year.

So far this year, our Branch has received three grants, enabling us to complete some major renovations. We hope our changes will generate new business. Most recently, we received a New Horizon’s Grant to fund installation of new electronic doors and air conditioner. The Banquet Hall looks amazing and washroom facilities are brand new. The Legion does some great work providing much needed housing for our veterans and comforts for those residing in Long Term Care Facilities. We also donate to many local charities, Canada Day and local schools upon request. Our Branch is a vibrant place where people come to socialize, volunteer, contribute to the community and engage today’s youth in becoming leaders of tomorrow. Our Service Officer provides dedicated support and compassionate assistance to all Veterans. This includes benevolent assistance to veterans in financial need and representation for disability benefits from Veterans Affairs Canada.

The Trillium Brass Quintet (www.trillium.com) are to be artists in residence for the brass workshop while the Wychwood Trio (www.micheljacot.com) for the woodwind workshop. Members of these ensembles will not only conduct the workshops and lessons, they will perform informally throughout the week. It promises to be an inspiring and exciting week, including a variety of student performance formats with a grand finale at the end. During breaks, supervised activities will include soccer, yoga, arts and crafts. Students will bring their own nut-free, garbageless lunch, snacks and drinks. Cost is $125 per student. On Saturday, June 2, the Walk for a Cause raised almost $6,000 to support the walk-in clinic in Bobcaygeon. Many thanks go out to the whole community from your Kawartha North Family Health Team. The walk was sponsored and organized by Bigley Shoes and Clothing, and is just one example of their commitment to this community. Many thanks, also, to Sherry Peel and her assistant Samantha who were so enthusiastic about this cause. Since the Ministry of Health does not provide funding for the Bobcaygeon walk-in clinic, the only support for this valued addition to our community is through community donations. The almost $6,000 raised will cover operating costs for an additional three months. The sound of little feet scampering down the hall is the first thing I hear most mornings. Then, one of two things happens. Either I open my eyes to see two pajama-clad boys ready to snuggle in for a story, or my more frequent wake up call: “Let’s wrestle Daddy!” This call to action is followed by the full weight of a five- and twoyear-old crashing down on my ribs. Oh yes, and the giggles. The laughter of crushing Daddy is both distinct and joyous. And the sore ribs go away in time. It may be a bit cliché, but being a dad really does make us reflect upon our own fathers. The hard work, the worrying, the moments of pride. And most of all, the unconditional love. A father is filled with this emotion every day; it becomes the lighthouse that guides each thought and gesture. And this counts for grandfathers, too. I was very lucky when my first son was born to have a picture taken of the four generations all together. My grandpa was 90-years-old. I took another picture of him, sitting in the nursing home, giving my baby boy a kiss on the forehead. I realized then that the bond of care is perpetual; I realized my grandfather once looked up to his dad, and his grandfather, and likely still did even though they were long since gone from this world. And so the chain of unconditional love goes on. This morning I asked my eldest boy what he thought I should say about being a dad. “Well,” he said. “You could talk about how we have fun playing games together, how we like to read and go skating.” I nodded. His smile was broad. “But I’d just say being a dad is good because you get to love your kids so much.” And just like that, he summed it all up.

However you chose to celebrate with your children, we wish all fathers a very pleasant Father’s Day. Last weekend, we celebrated Settlers’ Day in grand style. Louise Plante and her team of wonder volunteers hosted a day to be remembered. It was wonderful, the weather was perfect, the cooks did a fabulous job, the strawberry shortcake was delicious. Animals, horse drawn buggy rides, the Norwood District High School and East North Humberland Secondary School Drill Teams put on exciting musket and drill displays. Congratulations to all involved and thank you to all who attended and participated. Our chickens--Speckled Sussex--have been clucking away in their pen. Laying eggs and acting very friendly, they talk to the gardeners every day. We are gathering their eggs regularly. Stop by and see them and soon our other new pets will arrive. We need volunteers to help with maintenance. If you are a high school student and need some of your community hours and like to cut grass, paint, do odd jobs etc., could we ever use your help. Please call the office and we can tell you more about this. Now if you happen to be older than high school age and still like grass cutting etc. and would like to be part of a rotating team, we would like your help so please call us at 705.738.6163. Our Summer Camps are booking up quickly. Please reserve your child’s space. It sounds like a fun-filled, week-long program, each week is different and all have a settler theme. We Won’t Tell Dad It’s a Healthy Dish!
• Brine: 2.5 cups water mixed with .25 cup salt and .25 cup apple-cider vinegar • 3 very large boneless, skinless chicken breasts (10 to 12 ounces each), halved or 6 small • 1 cup Grape-Nuts or other crunchy, whole-wheat and barley cereal • 1 ¼ teaspoons chili powder • 1 teaspoon ground cumin • 1 teaspoon dried thyme • 1 teaspoon onion powder • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder • 1 large egg white beaten until foamy with 2 tablespoons water

1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a large, rimmed baking sheet with non-stick spray. 2. Add chicken breasts to the brine mixture, stir and set aside at room temperature for 15 minutes. (Brining the breasts keep them plump during baking.) 3. Mix Grape-Nuts and seasonings on large plate. 4. Drain and rinse the breasts, and blot dry with paper towel. Dip one piece in the egg white mixture, let the excess slip back into the bowl, and then roll the breast in cereal mixture, lightly coating all sides. Place on the prepared sheet and repeat with remaining breasts. 5. Bake until crunchy and brown, approximately 25 to 30 minutes. 6. Stand at room temperature 2 to 3 minutes and serve. ROSS FORBERT AND HELENE FORBERT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND NOTICE Ross Forbert and Helene Forbert, by their last Will and Testament provided for the creation of a Scholarship Fund. The primary purpose of the said Fund is to provide financial assistance to students who are resident within the geographic limits of the Village of Bobcaygeon, and will be in full-time attendance at a post-secondary educational institution for the 2012-2013 academic year. The Executors invite all students who reside in the geographic Village of Bobcaygeon, and who will be attending a post-secondary institution for the academic year 2012-2013 to submit in writing a request to participate in the Scholarship Fund. of a song, and as mobile cameras rolled down Kent Street, the crowd lip synched the part of the song they had been assigned. In the case of the Lindsay Lip Dub it was two songs, one by Hedley and the other by Sweet Thing, a band with a local contingent since band member Tyler Kyte is originally from Lindsay. The mobile camera made 2 runs from LCVI Secondary School to the Academy Theatre where they were met by an enthusiastic crowd of children from St Mary’s Elementary School, The Red Hat Ladies and the ladies from Old Friends‌New Friends Tea Social group. Everyone joined in during an impromptu rendition of Twist and Shout between takes. Local elementary and secondary schools, community groups such as the Lindsay Curling Club, Rotary, Yoga Loft, A Place Called Home and the Red Hat Ladies all dressed up in their club colours to show the world their community spirit. Celebrities, including James Neal of the Pittsburg Penguins were on hand to sign autographs. The video will be on YouTube with the goal of 1 million hits within 6 months of its release. A preview of the Lip Dub will be shown at the Academy Theatre in Lindsay in the middle of June.

The GAMIING Nature Centre presents its Annual Summer Lakeshore Festival on Saturday, June 16, 2012 from 11 am to 6 pm. All ages are invited to attend two shows of the Birds of Prey with the Canadian Raptor Conservancy, along with EcoProject presentations. Gamiing Puppeteers and Open Mic with lots of music. The wild-edible food court will be feature again, plus the nature trail hikes and games to appeal to the entire family. Admission is by donation. This is Darren Babcock-Yates. Darren was raised in Havelock, and later moved to Peterborough for college. While he was in college, he met an amazing woman. Her family owns and operates a business in downtown Lindsay, so he proceeded his journey westward bound, and moved to the great town of Lindsay! Darren has now been a resident of The City of Kawartha Lakes for over 15 years, where is he is raising two children. Darren started working for The City of Kawartha Lakes Parks, Recreation & Culture Division 4 years ago, and then transferred to the Solid Waste Division. Darren enjoys walking and hiking the numerous trails The City of Kawartha Lakes has to offer. He is also an avid gardener.
