As you know, a provincial election has been called for June 12. Although this is not a surprise to most of us, the shortened election campaign now leaves us with about 28 days – and just two editions of The Kawartha Promoter – to cover the lead-up to the 41st provincial general election. In today’s edition, we introduce you to the candidates who have been selected by their riding associations to date. (pages 8, 10, 11) They are, of course, incumbent Laurie Scott for the Progressive Conservatives, former Haliburton-Kawartha LakesBrock Liberal MPP Rick Johnson and NDP stalwart Don Abel. There may be more candidates as the official nomination period begins May 15 and runs until 2 p.m. May 22. Voters actually have 28 days to vote, beginning Thursday, May 15. From 6:30 to 7:30 a.m., May 24 and 25, 270 fishermen and women will take off from Little Bob Channel, under the bridge at County Road 24, to compete in the 34th annual live-release CanadaU.S. Walleye tournament. Join us on the bridge over County Road 24. Our great walleye mascot will be there waving at the competitors. We would appreciate the community showing its support for these anglers. These competitors will spend three to seven days in our area. They bring a lot of income to Bobcaygeon so it would be great if we could have a large contingent waving to them as they leave for their day. A dozen of us did this last tournament and the anglers really appreciated it, some even took pictures of us as we were taking their photos. I will be working with others to form a coalition of organizations to support such an effort. A first step is to host an ecological/waterless car wash at Trinity United Church (44 William St., Bobcaygeon) on Sat., May 17, 10 a.m. to noon. Gamiing Nature Centre and others will be present to share information about how to conserve and protect our beautiful watershed. How we care for our water affects our health (we drink this stuff, not all contamination is filtered out) and wealth (property values are higher for water we can swim and fish in). Dewdney Mountain limestone quarry

We are 100% behind the Citizens for Responsible Aggregate Development (CFRAD) though we really prefer this quarry not be granted license to operate at all. There are no apparent positives at all for the City of Kawartha Lakes should this quarry be developed. Indeed, there are a multitude of negatives: the impact on our water system; wildlife; the proximity to the fish sanctuary and, above all, the impact on the residents of this beautiful rural area. Bobcaygeon depends on the tourist trade. It is a beautiful and very popular destination. The estimated quarry truck traffic will cause many tourists to avoid the Bobcaygeon area. The East St. south section of Hwy. 36 is a residential section. The truck traffic will cause our resale prices to plummet. As senior citizens on fixed incomes, we will depend on our equity in our home to see us through if we must sell to pay for future nursing home care. Peterborough council and Trent Lakes council voted to allow this quarry to develop. Therefore, we adamantly state that these two municipalities should transport the aggregate through their own road systems. CKL taxpayers do not wish to pay the

At the very least, CKL should have very restrictive load limits on roads and bridges thus prohibiting the cargo of aggregate. Little Bob Channel bridge is currently being repaired at the cost of $896,268, part of which will come from the capital reserve. Just how long will this costly repair last under pressure of the trucks. We do trust the OMB will consider long and hard the detriment this quarry will cause. Re: OFF THE TOP Apr. 18. As far as term limits I totally agree. With regard to reducing the number of councillors, I fail to see what this would accomplish. If it is monetary, then such action is like taking a fly swatter to beat off an elephant. However, I believe it would be far more beneficial to have an outside, qualified, independent professional body undertake an objective assessment of the effectiveness of the city’s single-tier structure since inception, to work in the best interests of taxpayers. Commissioner Harry Kitchen himself admitted that the imposition of “single-tier structure was debatable” and that a period of 10 years would be required to properly assess matters.

To this end, the writer undertook to do an eightyear comparison of seven financial and employee categories between the City of Kawartha Lakes and the abutting amalgamated County of Peterborough (excluding the City of Peterborough). The comparison involved information provided by each body to the province. The two areas are very similar in three critical areas ie. Number of households, population and geography. In every instance, Peterborough County outperformed the City of Kawartha Lakes in either absolute numbers or percentages. What was particularly obvious and alarming was that although the City of Kawartha Lakes took in over $2 million more in “own purposes” taxes each year, the city’s financial position deteriorated alarmingly while that of Peterborough County went from strength to strength. How can any mayor or councillor who genuinely has the best interests of the taxpayer sat heart object to the review Commissioner Kitchen considered appropriate. F.M. been given a beautiful park to enjoy walking our pets in. Is it above the people here, who walk their dogs in the park, to stoop and scoop their dog’s droppings? Not only did I see very large loads on the walkway but a great amount in the grass where you cannot walk without looking down. I can see the day when the privilege we have for walking our pets in the parks will be revoked because of a few very lazy, very uncaring and disgusting pet owners. There are many garbage containers for our use; why not take advantage of them. What a disgrace! How would these dog owners like it if we all left our dog’s droppings and it was they who happened to be the one to wear it on their boots? The waterfront is a beautiful park where we get to meet other pet owners and their very nice dogs. Our dogs get a chance to become more friendly and socialized by meeting other pets. My husband and I have been to other beautiful places were people such as the ones in Fenelon (who know whom I am talking about) caused the same problems and we, as responsible pet owners, could not take our dogs for a walk in the parks. Our biggest concern is the amount of dog droppings in the children’s play area. Are we not concerned with their health and welfare? Diseases carried by these droppings could be passed to our children and our pets. Really, what dad or mum would want to subject their child to this? There are not many signs in the area about stoop and scoop. Who has the authority to police this problem? There should be a large fine for anyone caught not picking up after their pets. Smarten up people. Not everything in life is free. Take care of that which you are given. It only takes a moment to stoop and scoop. Marjorie Kinsey Fenelon Falls

Rural transit

The city signed a one-year contract extension with its rural transit contractor May 14 but the future of the service is far from clear. Staff recommended that the pilot project, contracted to Kawartha Ground Transportation the past nine months, be continued. Ward 8 Coun. Donna Villemaire was not happy with the staff report, saying it was incomplete and numbers didn’t “jive.” She did not want to proceed until she saw complete and detailed analyses and a full set of options, including extending the service, continuing in-house or with a different provider (such as Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes) or discontinuation. She called for a more detailed report for the last meeting of June and got the support of a majority of councillors. But with the deadline to extend the contract falling the day after the meeting, council had to endorse re-signing but were assured the contract could be cancelled with 60 days notice. Ward 7 Coun. Brian Junkin said he never sees riders on the buses and it is too expensive. Ward 1 Coun. John Macklem said “quite frankly the numbers are very clear. Kill it.” He said it may be gas tax money but it is still taxpayers’ money and “somewhere we’ve lost our way in the woods.” But Ward 13 Coun. Pat Warren said the need for rural transit was the number one issue in Bobcaygeon and people were using the service, ridership was increasing and this was the type of project the gas tax is for. Ward 14 Coun. Ron Ashmore argued the service is connecting communities. Others said no transport system makes money, they are all heavily subsidized. Ward 12 Coun. Gord James said it was “about service to your community”. Villemaire said she was not trying to stop the service, and believes it should be extended, but felt councillors had to be accountable for spending nearly half-a-million-dollars.

Walmart proceeding

The Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) has now paved the way for Lindsay to get a major retail development – including a Walmart - at Hwy 35 and Colborne Street. The board had been holding final approval for the Mason Homes’ development pending assurances over servicing of the site. On May 9 it said it was satisfied that its conditions had been met. Director of development services Ron Taylor updated council on the decision. The appellants were: Zellers Inc. and Montez Corp., Orsi Lands and Runnymede Jennings Creek Developments Ltd. The site would include Walmart, another big box retailer and other retail space. Taylor said the development is still contingent on completion of

the Northwest Trunk sanitary sewer project but said his department will likely recommend tendering the final piece of that project at a July council meeting.

Only one chip truck

Only one chip truck will be allowed in Bobcaygeon after council refused to waive a by-law at the meeting that would have allowed a second truck at 239 Main St. Maicey Benjamin spoke to council with Francis Ferguson at his side. Benjamin said the by-law was to help permanent restaurant owners who pay taxes to the city. He said waiving it opened a “can of worms” that could allow multiple chip trucks in towns across the city. He said times were tough in Bobcaygeon with stagnant population growth and no industry other than tourism in the retirement village. He added that there are already 26 restaurants and two grocery stores with deli’s and a lot of chip trucks within a short distance from the town. Ward 13 Coun. Pat Warren moved a motion to keep the original by-law, allowing just one chip truck, and was supported by Ward 7 Coun. Brian Junkin and Ward 15 Coun. Gerald McGregor. Other councillors said it wasn’t council’s place to determine what businesses could operate where but a majority voted to keep the one chip truck bylaw in place.

Special events funding

The city approved $20,500 in spending under its special events economic development partnership fund 2014 allocation. Groups receiving money include: the Bobcaygeon chamber for Unlock the Summer ($1,000) and the Canada/US Walleye tournament ($150); the Fresh Water Summit in Coboconk ($4,500); the HMK Children’s Water Festival ($500); $5,000 for Globus Theatre’s fall season; South Pond Farms’ Arts in the Field ($2,000); The Lindsay Gallery ($850); Valentia Church and Community Centre’s Heritage Festival ($1,500) and Lindsay Ribfest ($5,000) .

He moved to Bobcaygeon in 1991 and opened his business in 2010. He boasts 15 years experience in the roofing industry. He is also now an “IKO Shield certified roofing contractor.” Dustin did industrial and commercial roofing for 10 years, working on hospitals and high schools so he has seen everything the industry can throw at a roofer. Now, he is more interested in residential and small commercial shingling repair jobs. He and his crew also do a lot of new construction in the area. Already they are getting busy for the 2014 season and will work right up until around Christmas and work roofing construction in the off-season.

He says his crew is known for being small, friendly and polite and his customers really appreciate that. He said that he would eventually love to grow the business to the point of having up to two to three crews. Don Abel was first elected in the 1990 provincial election as an NDP MPP for Wentworth North. Prior to politics, he studied economics, industrial sociology, political science, labour history and labour law at the Labour College of Canada. He was a full time president of CUPE Local 1572 and a CUPE national staff representative. He recently retired as the senior licensing officer for the city and was a member of CUPE Local 855 and the Municipal Law Enforcement Officers Association of Ontario. He was the NDP candidate in the 2011 provincial election in which the NDP more than doubled its total votes from the 2009 by-election and garnered the most votes since NDP candidate Dennis Drainville won the 1990 provincial election. Born and raised in Kinmount, Laurie Scott has strong roots in HaliburtonKawartha Lakes-Brock. Her father, Bill Scott, proudly represented local families as their MP for 28 years. Prior to entering provincial politics, Laurie worked as a Registered Nurse for more than 20 years in Toronto and on international contracts before returning to the Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay. In the 2003 general election she was elected MPP. As an MPP, Scott says she has fought hard for local families by standing up against high electricity costs, opposing wind turbine developments and fighting to save the horse-racing industry while working with businesses and municipalities to address their concerns. McGee speaks out

LINDSAY - In his first interview since announcing he will not seek a third term as mayor of the City of Kawartha Lakes, Ric McGee exclusively told The Kawartha Promoter he is a “fixer” not a “caretaker” so it is time to go. “I will go on to help someone fix the next set of challenges that someone is faced with,” McGee said when asked about his plans for the future. McGee believes he and the council of the past 7.5 years has accomplished much “and there are now the

right processes and people in place to continue to move the city forward.” His terms have seen the city do arguably the best planning since amalgamation. For example Official Plans, an Integrated and Community Sustainability Plan, an Aggregate Secondary Plan, agricultural plans and lake management plans. They have passed housing and homelessness plans and will soon endorse heritage and cultural master plans. They have initiated the Water Research and Innovation Network (or WRAIN). His councils have come very near to delivering the Northwest Trunk sanitary sewer project and a Wal-Mart and have completed the Short and 2A Drain project. “We have cleaned up a lot of other people’s messes ,” McGee said. “I’m proud of the work that has been accomplished collectively. This municipality is being recognized for doing a lot of good things.” He is disappointed the province did not make a decision on increased aggregate royalties but believes a hefty increase is coming soon. He said one regret is “too many politicians pandering to special interests instead of doing the right thing for the masses.” This leads him to say he strongly believes that councillors should be restricted to two terms in office rather than becoming lifetime councillors. Asked what he would like to be remembered for, McGee says: “He did the right thing every day and even when people didn’t want to hear the answer he gave us the truth.” As for what he will miss, he says “the really good people who work hard and try their best and care and make this community a better place for everybody.”

Long-time boat and snowmobile mechanics Leo Groenendyk and Rob Owen were looking for a change and the end result has seen the two former work colleagues open their own business – Mechanics on the Trent Ltd. “There’s a need in the area for our services,” says Leo, who has been in the business for more than 40 years. “There is enough work out there for everybody,” adds Rob, who has worked in the marine business in this area since 1995. The team has certainly done its homework, having already approached some local marinas who do not have a full-time mechanic to offer their services. They said there is a shortage of marina mechanics in the area. But, they are also offering their expertise to all other boat owners, from locals to cottagers to people at trailer parks to transient boaters visiting the Trent Severn Waterway. They have two trucks and a service boat, fullystocked with inventory, for any call-out. “And we can do anything needed,” they say, “engines, drives, electrical, structural, fiberglass.” Leo started in the industry in 1973 and is a Mercury Marine Masters Mechanic for stern drives and outboard motors. He received his Ontario Certification of Qualification for boat motor mechanics in 1981. Rob is a graduate of the Marina Technology

course at Georgian College and is trained in Mercruiser, Mercury outboard and is Clean Marinecertified. Tackling bullying in schools

KAWARTHA LAKES - At the last Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) meeting, superintendent of safe and accepting schools, Kevin Cutler, introduced the Stand Up program to trustees - explaining that it is changing the culture of schools as a way of eliminating bullying. This is the first year for the program and has started with four secondary schools and each of their corresponding feeder elementary schools (BMLSS, HHS, LCVI, and IEWSS). Five to six students from the elementary schools were selected to participate with several secondary school students. Each of the students participated in two, three-day programs this school year. The Stand Up program is a joint initiative between the school board and the Me to We organization. Principal Jane Austin and several students from Bobcaygeon Public School provided their perspectives on the program. The students told trustees that participating in the program has empowered them to better understand the issue of bullying. It has also encouraged students to reflect on their own school perspectives. The student team, with teacher Angie Kimble, has been working on a plan for their school using the experiences and lessons learned at their three-day

CANADA-US WALLEYE TOURNAMENT

BOBCAYGEON - Between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 24 – 270 fishermen and women will take off from Little Bob Channel under the bridge at County Road 24 to compete in the 34th annual Canada-US Walleye tournament. The 135 teams will be chasing more than $70,000 in cash and prizes this year, with top

prize again being $10,000 in Ontario’s oldest live release tournament May 23-25. Bobcaygeon volunteer Lynda Wheeler is encouraging residents to converge on the bridge to send the teams off in fine style. The walleye mascot will also be there. This weekend isn’t all about fishing either. Organizers encourage participants to again invite their family or friends to come to Bobcaygeon over the weekend. The Fishing and Outdoors Show will be held at the arena all weekend long. It features corporate vendors and representation from the tournament’s sponsors. People can grab a bite to eat or a nonalcoholic drink. The Canada-US Walleye tournament puts Bobcaygeon on the map every year and brings visitors from far and wide who fish, frequent local accommodation, eating and drinking venues and shop.

BOBCAYGEON - A new season of the Bobcaygeon Famers Market opens Saturday, May 17 at 8 a.m. and runs until 1 p.m. Located at the fairgrounds on Mansfield Street, this year’s market has more than 25 vendors. Broadcaster Lloyd Robertson coming to area By Lisa Gervais

KAWARTHA LAKES One of Canada’s most renowned broadcasters is coming to the City of Kawartha Lakes later this month. Lloyd Robertson will be at Harmony Farm on Country Road 121 on Saturday, May 24 between 1 and 3 p.m. Robertson wrote his memoir The Kind Of Life It’s Been after retiring as chief anchor and senior editor of the CTV National News in 2011. At 80, he still co-hosts W5. Robertson said Harmony Farm co-owner Sara Bornstein wrote his publisher, HarperCollins, to ask if he would appear as part of their author series. Because he and his wife cottage near the Bancroft area, he figured he would be up this way anyway so said yes. He plans to sell and sign books and do a reading. During a wide-sweeping interview with The Kawartha Promoter, he talked about the potential for Trudeaumania part two and took a question on former CTV colleagues, turned beleaguered Senators, Mike Duffy and Pamela Wallin. He covered the rise of Liberal Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, dubbed Trudeaumania, and said it “certainly looks like” Justin may be following in his father’s footsteps. But he said Justin “has stumbled as he is on a learning curve”. He said voters will know within a year whether he is capable of rising to the country’s highest office. “The important thing is just what policies he plans to put in place.” As for Duffy and Wallin, Robertson said he liked both of them but felt they got into the Senate at a time when it was under intense scrutiny. “No doubt this kind of stuff has been going on for a long time,” he said of the Senate in general. Robertson said he was asked by former Prime Minister Jean Chretien about becoming a Senator when he retired but he turned it down and laughed that he had “dodged a bullet.” He said he would read funny extracts from his book when he pays his visit to the area and would share some of the things that he has learned from being a broadcaster over the years.

The May long weekend is traditionally the beginning of gardening season. Since it is the only start, it is worth concentrating on some

improvement basics rather than trying to achieve the whole effect on one Saturday morning. That should begin with improving your soil. Soil is a mineral mixture of clay, silt, sand and stone particles. But it needs to be fed organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure to make it a better medium for plants. Living organisms ingest and break down this material into nutrients.Structure is also provided so that water, air and roots can move throughout the soil better. The famous English gardener, “Capability” Brown believed that good gardeners were compelled by their passion to keep improving their garden design. A garden will evolve on its own without much intervention but every spring most gardeners add a few new plants, take out less favoured ones or alter the original design in some way. That is why even the most seasoned gardener cannot resist the local nursery, garden centre or horticultural plant sale such as the one at Settlers’ Village on Saturday May 31 at 9 a.m. There might be something new, different or unusual that will improve the look of their garden. Food gardeners know that it is important to change the placement of their vegetables each year for improved yield. This confuses pests as well as creates variation in what might otherwise be a routine annual chore. When selecting plants for your garden, patio or balcony always be aware of the light conditions. Most plant labels will indicate light requirements. Getting the correct match will improve the chances of success dramatically. To ensure that you have an ache-free weekend, stretch before gardening. Take occasional breaks. After all, it is the 2-4 weekend.

LINDSAY - School board trustee Judith Hayes is not seeking re-election. The Wards 5, 9 and 11 trustee, and wife of Ward 9 City Councillor Andy Luff, made the announcement last week. She thanked Luff, her family and supporters for their many kind words of encouragement over the past four years. Also, the teachers and administration of the Trillium Lakelands District School Board for guiding her along the learning curve. “Our students are so fortunate to have such dedicated and passionate people within our education system,” she said. Hayes said that learning will continue to be foremost in her mind when she now turns to family and friends on her next journey into retirement and new adventures. She wished the TLDSB the best in continuing to support student success in preparing graduates to become future leaders at work and play.

Members’ Event April 15 at Riverside Inn a success

Members of the Coboconk, Norland & Area Chamber of Commerce (CNACC) gathered at the Riverside Inn on April 15 to network and learn a bit more about what the chamber has been up to since the opening of its office less than two months ago. Chair Ian Forster announced that there are now 106 members and welcomed the three newest members: Gordon Bartley Construction, Kawartha Lakes Snowmobile Club,and Handley Home Inspections. Ian announced that the chamber office, located inside the Fire On The Rock store in Coboconk courtesy of Kingsley Malcolm, is focused mainly on: securing grant funding both to undertake a business planning initiative and community beautification projects; enhancing the www.coboconknorland.ca website, and developing a roster of members’ events for the rest of 2014. Norland Community Centre

Did you know that Norland will soon have its own community centre? The centre is intended to be a year-round gathering space for at least 200 people and will be constructed at Ward Park just north of the village, on Hwy 35 as an addition to the existing arena

building. Until now, there hasn’t been a large space for the residents of Norland and surrounding areas to access in their own town. The new building will have the ability to be divided into three sections for smaller or larger rooms depending on the activity. A kitchen area is planned, along with a small fitness area and possibly even a childcare program. Currently, the committee of volunteers for the project are working with the City of Kawartha Lakes to receive proposals for the design of the building and they are hoping to see shovels in the ground this fall and a grand opening in June 2015. The project is already funded. The city has approved capital funding for the project and the community has raised almost $60,000 to help furnish the building. This multi-use space will be available for use by community organizations, churches, and residents and will be able to host weddings, banquets, dances and lots of community activities too.

COBOCONK - Coboconk quilter Linda Greer has designed a quilt block and entered it into an international “Design a Quilt Block” competition. Greer has entered the Accuquilt “design a quilt block” contest. She said competitors from all American states and across Canada have entered. So far, there are about 450 entries, with only a handful from Canada.

The new chamber is partnering with both the Norland Horticultural Society and the Coboconk Horticultural Society to spruce up the two towns. After working together to install festive planters and decorations for the winter season and a good old-fashioned spring cleaning, they are now working together to bring flowers and colour to the towns. COBOCONK - The Coboconk and District Lions Club is excited to announce a partnership with The Boys and Girls Clubs of Kawartha Lakes (BGCKL). The Lions have provided house league soccer in Coby for 13 years, and in 2014 both organizations will work together to provide a quality soccer program. The program speaks to the BGCKL mission statement - to provide a safe, supportive place where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills for life. The Lions have had more than 2,500 participants through their soccer program since 2000. Sharon Yeo, who is the past president and soccer chairman, says “it’s a natural fit. Both organizations have similar outcomes and goals, to promote health and wellness. Our soccer program is designed to be a fun, learning experience.” The BGCKL currently provide high quality sports programs on Tuesday nights at Ridgewood Public School in Coboconk as well as a wonderful after-school program. Sharon met with Trevor Tompkins of the BGCKL and both agreed that the move to the club facilitating the Lions soccer program was a natural move. This is the transition year with both clubs working together and in 2015 the BGCKL will oversee the program with Sharon being a close resource and support. As always the winners are the youth in our community.

Choristers Corner

A new Facebook page (www.facebook. com/BobcaygeonChoristers) has been created to promote the Choristers and advertise events and happenings. One upcoming event will see the Choristers perform for the May 17th opening of the Boyd Heritage Museum, which turns 125 this year. The choir will start with O Canada followed by other numbers. The building originally housed the offices of the Boyd Lumber Company and the Trent Valley Navigation Company. Now, of course, it has the museum, library, gallery, chamber and Service Ontario. This special event officially opens the museum’s summer season and will include children’s activities, Bobolini the Magician, cake and refreshments. Sounds like a good day, see you there. Any organization has a group of people who keep the ball rolling and the Choristers are no exception. For instance: Mary Sheffield keeps the finances in order; Cathy Bennett has a file full of music that must be kept organized and also takes care of the scrapbooks and keeps them updated; Caroline Eden is our communications expert and sends e-mails regularly to the members regarding music needed for practice, dates to remember and general information and Marie Irwin is our ‘Sunshine Lady,’ keeping track of folks who are under the weather or perhaps grieving by sending out chorister-signed cards when necessary. Ron Needs looks after a great sound system and has also filled in as assistant music director; Ruth Belbeck keeps track of birthdays as the choir acknowledges these with a rendition of Happy Birthday and Barb Dunleavey has been looking after upcoming singing engagements and has now handed the reigns over to Laura Plummer. So kudos to all the above. I apologize to anyone who has been overlooked but

Seed Lending Library

KAWARTHA LAKES - The City of Kawartha Lakes Public Library has launched a Seed Lending Library. It is a free community project that encourages residents to grow their own vegetables and fruits, save the seed and then share the seeds with others. The Seed Lending Library will be located at the Bobcaygeon, Kirkfield and Lindsay libraries. There, patrons can check out seeds for free. They then grow the vegetables and fruits, harvest the new seeds, and “return” some of these seeds so the library can “lend” them out to others. To get things started, the library will offer a variety of seeds that are easy to grow and easy to collect as well as tomato and pepper seedlings while quantities last. The seeds were purchased from Cottage Gardener Heirloom Seedhouse with a donation from the Friends of the Kirkfield Library. Seeds were selected and packaged by the Lindsay & District Master Gardeners. As well, patrons will receive handouts on growing the seeds and information on how to collect and save seed. Information sessions have been scheduled for the Kirkfield Library (705-4383331) May 17 at 10:30 a.m. and the Lindsay Library (705-324-5632) May 22 at 6:30 p.m. The library is partnering with the Lindsay & District Master Gardeners, the Bobcaygeon Horticultural Society, the Friends of the Kirkfield Library, Fleming College, Kawartha Lakes Food Coalition, Lindsay Community Garden, Healthy Communities and Plant a Row, Grow a Row. Age-Friendly committees seek members

FENELON FALLS – Age-Friendly committees in the City of Kawartha Lakes are seeking members. “In this area, we have one of the highest percentages of retirees in Ontario, so an age-friendly initiative makes sense,” said Lynda Palmer, a retired nurse. But she said “Not all of these things are just for older people. Age-friendly initiatives cross all ages and benefit everyone, including families, children and persons with disabilities.” She is one of about a dozen committee members who have been volunteering over the past three years to promote and improve services and supports for healthy aging. Some of the most visible examples of their work are the addition of ‘age-friendly’ benches and more disabled parking spaces in the downtown core. They have also focused on access to health care and rural transit. There is also a committee in Omemee. Summer Company accepting applications

KAWARTHA LAKES - Students looking for summer employment may want to try a different approach than working for someone else and become their own boss instead this summer. Summer Company is an Ontario government program for students between the ages of 15-29, in school and returning to school, to start and operate their own business throughout the summer months. The successful students can receive up to $1,500 for business start-up costs and up to $1,500 upon returning to school in the fall, as well as at least 12 hours of business training, and have the opportunity to meet with mentors for support and advice. Diane Steven, manager of the Kawartha Lakes Small Business & Entrepreneurship Centre (KLSBEC),

is hoping to accept 15 students this year. Since 2003, area students have started various businesses through the program such as lawn care, woodworking, tourism, artisan businesses, lessons/tutoring and food services. VICTORIA DAY EVENTS • Help pull garlic mustard

LINDSAY – For the sixth year in a row, staff and volunteers with the Invading Species Awareness Program (ISAP), the Ontario Invasive Plant Council (OIPC) and Kawartha Conservation will once again work together to rid Ken Reid Conservation Area of the highly invasive Garlic Mustard plant. So far, more than 5,000 pounds has been pulled. It can outcompete native woodland plants and create dense patches that prevent other plants from growing. Left unchecked, it also changes the soil chemistry so that nothing else can grow in the area and it can become the dominant plant on the forest floor within just five years. The pull is Friday, May 16 at 9 a.m. from the conservation area parking lot.

• Rugby event

LINDSAY – As part of a celebration for the late Vince Jones, spectators are asked to come to the Lindsay Rugby Club – dressed in red, yellow or black tops - for 5 p.m. on Friday, May 16. The club is going to make up Vince’s famous smiling “V” logo and take an aerial photograph. After that, players from the Oshawa Vikings, Peterborough Pagans and Lindsay Gryphons will a special show match against the Newfoundland Rock ‘A’ squad. LINDSAY – The 125th LCVI anniversary and Greenhurst reunion is slated for Saturday, May 17. Sponsored by LCVI, the Lindsay Curling Club and the Lindsay & District Sports Hall of Fame, it brings together the classes of the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s. The day begins with an open house between 1 and 4:30 p.m. in the LCVI cafeteria with memorabilia displays and athletic clothing for sale; a meet and greet with former students and staff and tours. In the evening, the venue is the LEX. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. for a 7 to 8 p.m. social hour. It will be followed by a dance from 8 p.m. to midnight featuring Little Caesar and the Consuls. • Model Railway and Museum open

Kinmount - Located in the 113 year-old restored Kinmount railway station, the Kinmount Model Railway & Museum opens for the season May 17. The baggage room houses an operating model railway in 1:87 (HO) scale that replicates the

former railway line that ran between Kinmount and Haliburton from 1877 until the tracks were removed in 1983/4. There are a number of artifacts and pictures on display outside the station, in the agent’s office and in the baggage room. At the present time, efforts are underway to recreate the agent’s office with period appropriate furniture and telegraphy equipment. The site attracts more than 1,000 visitors a season, some from as far away as Iceland, the UK, Germany, Russia and Japan. Admission is by donation. It is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday between the Victoria Day and the Thanksgiving Day weekends; Sundays of the Victoria Day, Civic Holiday, Labour Day and Thanksgiving Day long weekends and Canada Day. Special openings for individuals and groups can be accommodated by prior arrangement. PERRY ON COLLEGE BOARD

KAWARTHA LAKES – Fleming College has welcomed to its board a new governor from the City of Kawartha Lakes. Mike Perry, executive director of the City of Kawartha Lakes Family Health Team, was appointed for a term that will run through to Aug. 31, 2016. He attended his first board meeting on Wednesday, Apr. 30. Perry, a native of Fenelon Falls, is a lawyer and social worker by profession and recently cochaired the 2013-14 United Way Campaign for the City of Kawartha Lakes. He has also been active in drafting the Haliburton/Kawartha Lakes Poverty Reduction Strategy in the areas of affordable housing and transportation. Perry has served on many local community organizations, primarily in the areas of health and social services, the environment and affordable housing. He has worked with Fleming College students at the Frost Campus through the C-Links program and is a local community leader within Junior Achievement. Perry also has a decade of past experience with the federal government and has taught at Carleton and Trent universities. A recreational pilot, Perry is a member of the Canadian Forces Reserves. He and his wife Jill currently live on Lake Scugog with a nosey foxhound named Summer.

“I am very honoured to be on the board of governors. I remember Fleming as part of our community since I was a kid and am really impressed by how much it’s grown and its excellent reputation for great programs. I look forward to learning more about post- secondary education as a governor and working to help our local college students,” Perry said.

Volunteer at the Milk Run

LINDSAY - The city’s parks, recreation & culture division is seeking volunteers to assist at the 36th annual Lindsay Milk Run. The 5k/10k event takes place on Sunday, July 20 and starts and finishes at the Lindsay Recreation Complex. Volunteers are needed from approximately 6 a.m. to noon to assist with a variety of duties including: registration, food distribution, water stations, traffic control, as well as with set up and take down. All volunteers will receive a certificate acknowledging their volunteer hours as well as a Milk Run T-Shirt, refreshments, ice cream and most of all a chance to be part of an exciting, fun community tradition. Health & Wellness Register now for seniors’ three-day outdoor event

LINDSAY – Seniors are invited to take a hike or ride a bike on the beautiful Kawartha Trans Canada Trail during a free, three-day event in early June. People aged 65-plus can enjoy a leisurely cycling ride led by an experienced leader on the flat, scenic terrain of the trail at Fleming College’s Frost campus in Lindsay. If you haven’t been on a bike for a few years, it can be a little scary. In this event on June 4 you can rediscover the joy of cycling. Participants can bring their own bikes or use one that will be provided. An electric bike and an adult tricycle will be available for those who want to try them out. The cycling takes place on Wednesday, June 4 at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and registration by May 23 was required. Helmets are mandatory. Those who want to walk instead can go Nordic pole walking with a certified instructor during a onehour instructed walk on June 5. Poles are provided and space is limited so register early. Pole walking turns a simple walk into an effective aerobic activity. Participants need to wear sturdy walking shoes. The pole walking takes place on Thursday, June 5 at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. or 1 p.m. Saturday, June 7 is International Trails Day and will be celebrated with a 10 a.m. walk on the trail. Seniors are encouraged to bring their children and grandchildren to join them as they take a hike at their own speed. Rest on the new bench on the trail and enjoy free refreshments when you return. Saturday has two different walks: one to Memorial Park, returning via the community garden and the Kawartha Trans Canada Trail memorial wall and Fleming College fish hatchery; and the second one, a short stroll from The Log Cabin to the community garden, the KTCT wall and Fleming. All events begin and end at The Log Cabin at Fleming College on Albert Street in Lindsay and will be held rain or shine. Free snacks are provided. Register by May 23 for each event by filling

This three-day seniors’ fitness event has been organized by the non-profit Kawartha Trans Canada Trail Association and funded in part by the federal government’s New Horizons for Seniors program. It is free to seniors but donations to assist in maintaining the trail will be gratefully accepted.

LINDSAY - With National Nursing Week running May 12 -18, the health unit is using the occasion to recognize its nurses while raising awareness about the important role they play in promoting health and protecting against the spread of disease. Whether carrying out their duties in schools, homes, clinics or in other places in the community, health unit nurses help people in many different ways, according to Fiona Kelly, chief nursing officer with the HKPR District Health Unit. “From immunizing children, to investigating disease outbreaks, to promoting the benefits of healthy living, our nurses make a world of difference every day to the well-being of people living in Haliburton County, Northumberland County and the City of Kawartha Lakes,” she said. Because health unit nurses are fewer in number and frequently work behind the scenes, they often do not garner as much attention as their more numerous nursing colleagues in hospitals and long-term care settings, Kelly said, “but our nurses are certainly a valuable resource in our community. PRESCRIPTION DRUG DROP OFF DAY

KAWARTHA LAKES –There will be a collection location for Prescription Drug Drop Off Day on Friday, May 16, 2014 at the “Paramedics In The Park” event at Victoria Park, Lindsay between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Citizens wishing to dispose of outdated, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs may do so anonymously, without having to get out of their vehicles. A “Drive Through” location will be available at the northeast corner of the park situated at Victoria Avenue and Peel Street in Lindsay. It is being done via the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police Substance Abuse Committee, the City of Kawartha Lakes Paramedic Service, Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit, Kawartha Crimestoppers, Safe Communities of the City of Kawartha Lakes, Remedy’s Rx and Castle keep Retirement Inc., Recent studies indicate 24% of teens reported misusing prescription medications at least once within the previous year. Most of the teens took the medication from their family home. By working together to reduce the availability of these medications, the partners are hoping to keep youth safe.

It’s not why an organization operates, but it is nice to be recognized for operational excellence from time to time. For Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes, recognition came at the recent Lindsay and District Chamber of Commerce Evening of Excellence. The agency received the Not-for-Profit Excellence Award for the past year. The agency was recognized for its all-round operations and commitment to providing quality care and support to local residents. Criteria for the award included a strong display of board governance, effective leadership abilities, sound operational and strategic planning, partnerships and alliances, effective volunteer management, fundraising initiatives, marketing and promotion, and program development. These are all aspects of what goes into being able to reach local residents with services, and to meeting the challenges that present themselves daily. Community Care is committed to providing

the best programs and support possible. That commitment includes ongoing evaluation and examination of its operation. That is why, since 2004, the agency has participated in a national accreditation program that measures all aspects of its structure and program delivery. In 2011, Community Care received “Exemplary Standing” (full accreditation) status from the Accreditation Canada program - the highest possible standing for an agency. Soon, the agency will prepare for the next accreditation survey, which will be in early 2015. Once again, we don’t go through such a process in order to get a plaque to hang on the office wall. We participate because it is good to be assessed on the quality of our programs, and to always strive to be better. That’s good for the agency, but most importantly, it’s good for the residents of this community who use Community Care services.

WHEEL ACTION

· Increasing fines for cyclists who do not have required lights and other eflectors/reflective material on their bikes. The provincial government is also considering a $25 million investment over three years to improve cycling infrastructure in Ontario. In the City of Kawartha Lakes, Lisa Kaldeway likes what she sees coming down the road from Queen’s Park. Kaldeway is a Health Promoter with the HKPR District Health Unit who works extensively to promote cycling in her community. Last year, Kaldeway helped to launch a Share the Road campaign in Kawartha Lakes with a number of other community partners, including the OPP and Kawartha Cycling Club. “More people want to get on a bike more often, but don’t because there are a lack of places to ride where they feel safe,” Kaldeway notes. “Legislative changes that support safer cycling, and an investment in better infrastructure, are important steps to encourage more cycling in Ontario.” Kaldeway is urging all political parties to get behind the proposals to improve cycling safety in Ontario.

KAWARTHA LAKES - Local cycling advocates are applauding proposed changes to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act that they say will make the roads safer for those on two wheels. A proposed bill currently before the Ontario Legislature would revise provincial traffic laws to better address distracted driving, impaired driving and cycling safety. From a cycling safety perspective, the proposed changes include: · Increasing penalties for ‘dooring’, including demerit points for motorists who open their vehicle door in the path of an oncoming cyclist. · Allowing cyclists to use the paved shoulders on unrestricted provincial highways to promote safer opportunities to bike. · Requiring all drivers to maintain a safe distance of one-metre when passing cyclists. · Supporting cycling in urban areas by allowing municipalities to create ‘contra-flow’ bike lanes. These are lanes that would provide direct routes and better connections for cyclists.
