When renowned water crusader Maude Barlow was in town for Earth Day, she challenged the City of Kawartha Lakes to become ‘a blue community.’ So, what exactly is a blue community? According to the City of Nanaimo, which is a blue community, it is one that: recognizes water as a human right; promotes publicly financed, owned and operated water and wastewater services and bans the sale of bottled water in public facilities and at municipal events. Having the city recognize water as a human right would seem a fairly easy thing to do. However, quarries in the city do rely heavily on water so a balance must be struck to ensure that their use does not negatively impact on the public use. Our water and wastewater services are public entities although the city does work with the Ontario Clean Water Agency – a Crown

Agency of the Province - to assist it with its work. The city has already adopted an environmental stance with its Green Hub Community Improvement Strategy and said the future lies in water via the Water Research and Innovation Network (WRAIN). As for bottled water, the city banned water bottles from city hall and added re-hydration stations in a few buildings. A good next step would see a city councillor call for a ban on bottled water in city parks and facilities, as the City of Toronto implemented in 2012. The ban, which affects most of Toronto’s parks and park facilities, prohibits the sale and distribution of water bottles in all civic centres, city facilities and parks. Just got back to Bobcaygeon, and reading The Kawartha Promoter, Issue 7, you wrote in “Off the Top” about reducing the number of councillors plus the members having a two-year limit. We aren’t on Facebook so couldn’t comment there but we heartily agree with you on both counts. We certainly think we have far too many council members, and it seems that at least partly due to this, nothing ever appears to get done, the Northwest Trunk sewer line and the “involved” bridge being some examples. Or when it does get done, it is only after a great deal of animosity. A two-year limit on their terms of office is a great idea too. If you can’t get it done in that time, give someone else a chance. Re: Setting a two-term limit on council. Excellent idea providing it limits the term to two years maximum in each position. This way a councillor who has served two years and chooses to run for mayor would still be eligible. Unfortunately, some don’t know when to move on and make room for younger people with fresh ideas. Article was ‘spot on’

I just read the article on downsizing the number of councillors in CKL - I would have commented if I had seen it earlier. Dave Hodgson’s comment is as arrogant as he is

(editor’s note: Ms Strachan is referring to comments that Coun. Hodgson made about our Facebook poll, not his above letter). He tried to stop the Mitchell Bridge upgrade, commenting in a news article that all his constituents wanted to keep the old bridge. He tabled a petition to have the old one lane bridge refurbished. He was kissing up to certain people and the rest of us didn’t matter. I sent him an e-mail letting him know that all his constituents did not want to keep the one lane bridge and copied (Mayor) Ric McGee on it. A meeting of all his constituents was then called and he had his wings clipped. It turns out that very few of his constituents wanted to keep the single lane bridge. There is at least one councillor who does not need to have their seat renewed - and no politician should be permitted to hold office for more than two terms. (editor’s note: Ward 3 Coun. David Hodgson has announced that he is not seeking re-election). This article was spot on!

Reduce number of councillors

I don’t do Facebook so I couldn’t respond to your survey there. Just now we have 16 councillors and one mayor. According to the Municipal Act we must have four councillors plus a mayor. I suggest one councillor each from the NW, SW, NE, SE and Lindsay elected in their areas and one mayor elected at large. Also I would like to ask all candidates to say up front whether they are planning to give themselves a pay rise this time, instead of the sneaky way they did it after the last election. Gallery gets emergency funding

Council threw a financial lifeline to The Lindsay Gallery at the Apr. 22 meeting. A majority of councillors voted in favour of giving the gallery approximately $3,400 a month, on top of waiving rent to the city, following an impassioned plea by the gallery’s president and vice president. Susan Taylor and Lisa Woodhouse said they had given layoff notice to their one paid employee and the art gallery was facing imminent closure without emergency funding. Ward 10 Coun. Pat Dunn came up with the idea to take money from a former City of Lindsay reserve, with the gallery having to provide quarterly financial updates and an annual budget to the city. The money will be given until the city’s heritage and cultural master plans are complete. Dunn said it was like no other gallery in the town of Lindsay or City of Kawartha Lakes, providing employment for artists and a venue for children interested in exploring art. “Let’s give them a break. Let’s see what they can do.” The recorded vote was 10 in favour and five against. Ward 7 Coun. Brian Junkin was the most critical saying the gallery had done nothing to put itself in a better financial situation and should consider selling its permanent art collection. Some of the other arguments against included that the city rejected the Academy Theatre’s emergency funding request, it would wipe out the reserve, it was setting a precedent for other groups to come to council looking for money and that the gallery should seek out philanthropists.

Luff not running again

Ward 9 Coun. Andy Luff formally announced his decision to not seek re-election in 2014. He thanked his wife, Judith Hayes, for all of her help and support in his 11 years as a city councillor as well as the voters of Wards 2 and 9 for their support in his three terms on council. “I especially want to thank city staff and all

the volunteer members of committees I have been involved with over the last 11 years. Your thoughts and input have been invaluable in helping me to understand the issues and challenges and to hopefully have made the right decisions,” he said.

Whitetail “condos” refused

A majority of councillors voted against a staff and planning committee recommendation to allow Whitetail Golf and Country Club Estates to change their plans to permit 100 vacation dwelling units within condominium ownership – from a previously approved one-owner, land lease arrangement. A lengthy debate ended with a recorded vote of 12 against and only five in favour. Those arguing against the change said it opened the door to fulltime residency (which is not allowed) and that there would be no way to enforce it. However, director of development services Ron Taylor said staff still thought a condominium set-up made the most sense when it came to protecting the city’s interests, including potential water and sewer issues. Vexed at the decision to allow housing on prime agricultural land in the first place, a majority of councillors rejected the change.

Little Bob bridges update

Clearwater Structures Inc. of Ajax has been awarded the tender for the rehabilitation of Little Bob Channel North and South Bridges on CKL 36. The total tendered amount is $896,268.54. A deficit of $227,119 will be funded from the capital reserve.  The city is advising residents that CKL Rd. 36 south of Snake Point Rd. will be reduced to one lane, with temporary traffic signals, for an estimated construction period of May 5 to Aug. 7, 2014.

Costly Short/2A Drain

The construction of the Short and 2A Municipal Drain is now substantially complete but not before costing city taxpayers approximately $1.08 million. The effect on the general levy was tabled at the meeting in a report that said the anticipated final

Lindsay Airport will get a new hangar after council endorsed the airport board borrowing $626,143 from the Working Capital Reserve to be re-paid over the next 20 years. Ward 7 Coun. in debt and felt the city had no choice in future but to reduce service levels, increase debt or considerably raise taxes - or some combination thereof. But Ward 9 Coun. Andy Luff argued the airport is now profitable and the money was being borrowed and paid back with interest.

Cell towers approved

Council green-lighted a number of towers aimed at boosting cell phone range in the city. They include: a 35-metre tower at 90 Industrial Rd., Fenelon Falls; a 70-metre tower at Hwy 48 and Parkside Rd. (Bexley); a 70-metre tower at 60 Scotch Line Rd. Dunsford and a 50-metre tower at 193 Centreline Rd., Omemee.

Farmers markets opening

The Lindsay Farmers Market opens May 3 for the season. The market, which takes up a block between Kent St. W. and Peel St., will operate from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday until the last Saturday of October. The Fenelon Falls Farmers Market opens May 16 at the four way stop (Hwy 121 and County Rd. 8/Northline Rd.) Fridays from 2 to 7 p.m. In addition, a midweek market on Wednesdays will run through July and August only. Meanwhile the Bobcaygeon Farmers Market opens Saturday, May 17 at the fairgrounds.

Water crusader speaks out

BOBCAYGEON - Renowned water crusader Maude Barlow was in the city for Earth Day, helping to raise awareness of environmental issues around the world as well as money for Citizens for Responsible Aggregate Development (CFRAD). The prolific writer, national chairperson of the Council of Canadians and lauded environmentalist said she was thrilled to be in the area for Easter and Earth Day, telling a large crowd at the Lakeview Arts Barn “in case you didn’t know, you live in heaven.” She expressed support for CFRAD’s fight against the Dewdney Mountain limestone quarry, a battle they take to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) against the Municipality of Trent Lakes starting May 20. She said she was 100% behind responsible aggregate development and watershed protection. She criticized all levels of government for allowing developments such as Dewdney Mountain without consulting rural landowners. She said municipal councils then plead they do not have a choice because it is provincially-driven but asked “why don’t we have a choice? We have the right to demand that governments come to the table and talk to us. We allow these industries to dictate our policy.” Looking at the bigger picture, Barlow said we are a planet running out of clean water. She said one-half of the rivers in China are now gone; that the Ogallala aquifer in the USA will be gone in our lifetime and the Great Lakes could be bone dry in 80 years. She said we must follow four principles to turn things around: a new water ethic that asks about the

Bob swing bridge delays

PETERBOROUGH – The Bobcaygeon swing bridge could see traffic delays between May 5 and 9 as Parks Canada does seasonal maintenance on certain bridges that cross the Trent-Severn Waterway. In a press release, Parks Canada said vehicles may experience short delays of about 10 minutes. The Bolsover Road Swing Bridge could also be effected. Motorists are being asked to plan their routes in order to avoid delays. And, to accommodate school bus traffic, efforts will be made to keep bridge delays between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Parks Canada is conducting spring maintenance at some swing bridges and sites in preparation for the 2014 navigation season. This includes preventative maintenance such as washing and greasing swing bridges and conducting visual inspections to ensure their safe operability.

with Fleming College, bringing the total federal investment in applied research at Fleming over the past 12 months to $4.2 million. The money will be spread out over five years to further develop the Centre for Alternative Wastewater Treatment (CAWT) at Fleming under the College and Community Innovation Program (CCI) - Technology Access Centre grant. “Over the years the CAWT has worked diligently to provide high-quality applied research services for both private and public sector partners. Our proposal to NSERC to establish a Technology Access Centre in the CAWT included over 40 partners,” said Brent Wootton, Director and Senior Scientist, CAWT. “We’re thrilled to receive this funding and to work with businesses and community and government partners to build our communities, grow the economy, and protect and steward our water resources.” The CAWT is a water research facility offering research and commercialization services to the water and wastewater industry. The CAWT was created through investments from Canada Foundation for Innovation and the Ontario government in 2002 and supports more than 300 companies of all sizes in the region, helping them with commercialization, process innovation and product development. In addition, the CAWT received $789,414 in funding from the CFI’s College-Industry Innovation Fund in May 2012.

Septic Rehabilitation Loan Program

The city has developed a loan program for property owners to undertake repairs to their septic system, or if necessary replace it. The program has a repayment schedule ranging from five to20 years depending upon the amount of the loan. Council has allocated $150,000 to the program and loans will be issued on a first come first serve basis upon receipt of an application meeting all the necessary criteria of the program. The maximum amount of the loan is 25% of the current value assessment of the property to a maximum of $35,000 (including taxes). If the property is owned by more than one person, all owners must sign the agreement with the city with the loan being a lien against the property. Where there are other financial obligations attached to the property, applicants must comply with their obligations to other lenders as this loan takes priority over other registered interests appearing on title. Applications are available on the city’s website, and through the municipal service centres.

DUNSFORD - The Dunsford Lions Club is holding its inaugural “Wheels in Motion” 2014 event on Mother’s Day this year at the Dunsford Community Centre. NOTICE OF A PUBLIC MEETING CONCERNING THE COMPREHENSIVE ZONING BY-LAW UPDATE TAKE NOTICE that the Council of the Corporation of the Municipality of Trent Lakes will hold a third Statutory Public Meeting under the provisions of Section 34 of the Planning Act, R.S.O. 1990. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at 7:00 p.m., at the Municipal Office (Council Chambers), 701 County Road 36, to present the draft updated Comprehensive Zoning By-law for the Municipality of Trent Lakes. The doors will be open at 6:00 p.m. for ratepayers to review the zoning on their land as the maps have changed since the last public meeting. Location of the Subject Lands The draft Comprehensive Zoning By-law applies to all lands in the Municipality of Trent Lakes. A key map is therefore not provided. Purpose and Effect of the Comprehensive Zoning By-law The Comprehensive Zoning By-law is an important tool for managing the development of land within the Municipality. The Zoning By-law is a legal document that applies to all types of properties and regulates how land can be used and the required standards such as lot sizes, building types, setbacks from property lines and other features, provisions for accessory uses and buildings including docks and boathouses, and parking requirements, amongst other matters. The proposed Comprehensive Zoning By-law will replace the existing Comprehensive Zoning By-law, dated 2000, for the Township of Galway-Cavendish and Harvey. The revised draft Zoning By-law includes a number of revisions from the version that was reviewed at the last public meeting held in November, 2013, and includes changes made as a result of comments received at the public meeting. The changes include renaming the private access zones (Section 9, 10 and 11) and revisions to Section 4.30 - Setbacks from Water Bodies, Watercourses and Wetlands and to boathouse setbacks under Section 4.2.15. A copy of the revised draft Zoning By-law, including map schedules, will be posted on the Municipality’s website by April 23, 2014, and will be available for review at the Municipal office. Representation ANY PERSON may attend the Public Meeting and/or make written submission to the Municipality either in support of, or in opposition to, the draft updated Comprehensive Zoning By-law for the Municipality of Trent Lakes. If a person or public body does not make oral submissions at a public meeting or make written submissions to the Municipality of Trent Lakes before the by-law is passed, the person or public body is not entitled to appeal the decision of the Council of the Municipality of Trent Lakes to the Ontario Municipal Board. If a person or public body does not make oral submissions at a public meeting, or make written submissions to the Municipality of Trent Lakes before the by-law is passed, the person or public body may not be added as a party to the hearing of an appeal before the Ontario Municipal Board unless, in the opinion of the Board, there are reasonable grounds to do so. Canadian home sales edge slightly higher in March

OTTAWA - According to statistics released by The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA), national home sales activity edged up on a month-overmonth basis in March 2014. Highlights included: national home sales rose 1% from February to March; actual (not seasonally adjusted) activity stood 4.9% above March 2013 levels; the number of newly listed homes edged up 0.5% from February to March; the Canadian housing market remains in balanced territory; the national average sale price rose 6% on a year-over-year basis in March and the MLS® Home Price Index (HPI) rose 5.2% year-over-year in March. The number of home sales processed through the MLS® Systems of Canadian real estate Boards and Associations edged up 1% from February to March 2014. Five have filed for mayor, 16 for councillor

So far, the City of Kawartha Lakes will see battles in four wards as nominations continue to pour in for the Oct. 27 municipal election. As of the end of April - four months since candidates have been able to file their nomination papers - a total of 16 people have thrown their hats into the ring for the job of councillor. More than two people have filed in four wards. Ward 3, which will see David Hodgson stepping down, has two candidates: Gord Miller

and Jim Greensides. Ward 8, which is left vacant by Donna Villemaire running for mayor, sees Michelle Murphy-Ward contesting Jennifer Reynolds. In Ward 9, where Andy Luff is stepping aside, two high profile candidates have come forward in Russell Moore and Isaac Breadner. And, in Ward 10, incumbent Pat Dunn will square off against Chris Morasse. Other candidates who have filed as of Apr. 30 include: incumbent Doug Elmslie (Ward 6); incumbent Ron Ashmore (Ward 14); Steven Brooker (Ward 13); returnee Gerald McGregor (Ward 15); incumbent Heather Stauble (Ward 16); incumbent Patrick Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Reilly (Ward 11); Duncan Gallacher (Ward 12) and Stephen Clarke (Ward 7). As for school board trustees, the English side has seen John Byrne, Karen Round and Frank Arnold file papers and the French side has seen Michael Ross nominate. Nominations close at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12. The Kawartha Promoter has already profiled all five mayoral candidates for the City of Kawartha Lakes and will extend that coverage to include councillors and trustees in its Sept. 19, Oct. 3 and 17 editions.

At the Fenelon Falls Community Centre, May 2, 3 & 4 FENELON FALLS - The 30th annual Fenelon Falls Country Living Show, (previously called the Home & Cottage Show) to be held in the Fenelon Falls Community Centre from May 2 to 4, expects to draw many new visitors. “The show attracts many people to Fenelon Falls and we should see about 1,800 visitors as Spring gets underway and they look forward to their summer activities,” show manager Ross Hawe said in a press release. The show continues to offer a wide variety of services of interest to country home and cottage

owners. It’s a chance to get out and see what is available for cottage and home renovations, plus many other services from roofers to landscapers, to contractors, to water purification specialists, alternate forms for energy/solar/composting etc., furniture and appliances, hot tub products, boats/ watercraft and real estate for sale in the area. Karagiannis promises ‘fresh approach’

LINDSAY Local businesswoman Brenda Karagiannis has officially registered her candidacy for mayor in the Oct. 27 municipal elections. “I have always demonstrated and held a keen interest in the wellbeing of this amazing city and upon reflection felt I had no choice but to become involved,” she said in a press release. “The primary role for the mayor should be to be an advocate for the people and businesses of the city, providing strong leadership qualities. We need a fresh approach to managing this city, and my extensive business background lends well to this undertaking.” Karagiannis describes herself as a grassroots individual. She has direct past involvement in two local chambers of commerce and is now involved with the newly-created Coboconk Norland & Area Chamber of Commerce. “In my role as a long-time business owner, I am constantly in touch with both citizens and business owners across the city and I understand their needs

BMC gets $10,000

BOBCAYGEON - The Government of Canada has provided the Bobcaygeon Music Council with $10,000 through the Canada Arts Presentation Fund to present their year-round music series, Music Alive The series will present shows from April 2014 to March 2015 at various concert locations in the Kawartha Lakes. The announcement was made last week by local MP Barry Devolin on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages Shelly Glover. The Bobcaygeon Music Council is a not-forprofit presenter that brings professional classical and jazz performers to the Kawartha Lakes area through their year-round Music Alive series. Music Alive presents five to six performances annually with an expected annual attendance of 1,000 for the organization’s activities. Artistic director/general manager Cicela Mansson said “The Bobcaygeon Music Council is committed to enriching the musical life of our community and schools. As an organization, we are extremely grateful for the support Canadian Heritage has provided to our Music Alive concert series. This grant enables us to take our programming further and have an even greater impact on the arts and culture experience that we provide to the community. Thank you.”

Bobcaygoen & District Horticultural Society The month of May is upon us. Some have been waiting forever for this special time of year. Some have been in denial that it would ever come and are now caught unprepared for what awaits us in the garden. The Bobcaygeon Horticultural Society will hold its Spring garden show and a master gardeners’ demonstration the night of May 15 at Knox Presbyterian Hall and its annual plant sale at Kawartha Settlers’ Village starting at 9 a.m., Sat., May 30. This is in addition to cleaning up and preparing its 30-plus public gardens for an early June planting, teaching some 60 school children about seeding and transplanting vegetables for the Food Bank and working in their own gardens. Some of us will have the honour of becoming the founding planters of more than 20 species of native plants in Bobcaygeon’s first pollinator patch in the new Wilderness Park off Hwy. 36 on the north east edge of Bobcaygeon. We have selected almost 300 plants that will hopefully provide the pollen and nectar needed by bees, butterflies, moths and other pollinators, most of which are in decline. We are encouraged to learn that due to the lobbying of our Kawartha Field Naturalists and others that the Common Milkweed will no longer be on the list of noxious weeds which citizens of the municipality

are not allowed to grow. The larvae of the Monarch Butterfly, which is in peril, depend on it for food. In case you have pets who sometimes stray from their regular diet, there are numerous garden plants that can be dangerous to them. Lillies, azaleas, Japanese yew, castor bean, autumn crocus, hops and rhubarb leaves contain toxins that can make small animals ill or cause heart and kidney failure.

MED BASH RAISES $8,000

BOBCAYGEON - Organizers of the Med Bash for Dr. Mike Fagan said the event raised more than $8,000 on Apr. 26. “People were wonderfully generous,” spokeswoman Beth Gilroy said. “Everyone was happy to celebrate what Mike is doing for the town. I know the exams that Mike writes cost around $2,500 each so the $8,000 should help towards those costs.” She thanked Paul Wilson of cklr.ca for donating his equipment and time; Emmett Yeo for his auctioneering; bar volunteers; Diane and Fred Livie whose store was the base of operations for people dropping off prizes and buying tickets. Sacha Douglas organized the snack, which was provided by volunteers; Bob Burns did a great bunch of savory pastries with Pieter van Oudenaren’s wonderful cheeses. Dr. Ian Horseman donated two big prizes for auction. About 180 to 200 people attended.

irch Point Marina marks two very important milestones in 2014: the marina’s 50th year in operation and current owners Jeff and Kim Devolin celebrating 10 years at the helm. Jeff started at the marina 25 years ago. Kim said the time had flown by and the two had done “a ton” of improvements over the past decade. The marina has renovated their 80 covered slips. They have done extensive work on the grounds including redeveloping the waterfront and beach areas with stone work and gardens. The washrooms have been updated and a storage shed has been converted into a working shop. They plan on future constant improvements, too, updating as they enter their second decade at the picturesque marina along County Rd. 24. It features a calm and protected harbour that is well-sheltered from the elements. The Devolins say business continues to improve and they are growing their staff – now boasting nine full time year round employees. Kim says “it’s been awesome. We’ve been so fortunate to have received the support of boaters, friends and family.” They think what makes them different is their focus on service, having five mechanics onsite; a year-round, full-time fiberglass expert; Mercury, Volvo and Arctic Cat franchises; winter storage; a marine supply store, gas and haul-out up to 50 feet. Imperial Oilways produced a magazine in August 1964 featuring an article on the-then- new marina. Tom and Elaine Sterne were the original owners of the marina, located about two miles outside of Bobcaygeon on County Road 24. They bought six acres and dredged a new harbour. The article’s concluding paragraph would still apply today. “A boat is almost the only method of transportation left which allows you to relax and look at the scenery. And a friendly wave in passing, whether you’re in a skiff or a 50-foot cruiser – the camaraderie’ at the marina dock overnight - it all spells pleasure. Catering to water-borne customers makes an interesting way of making a living for people like Tom and Elaine Sterne” … and now, Jeff and Kim Devolin.

It’s Bobcaygeon party time, chamber of commerce style – and you’re invited. With one event – the annual Awards of Excellence - successfully concluded, the chamber is looking forward to its live-release Canada-U.S. Walleye Tournament, to be held at the arena and fairgrounds from midnight, Fri., May 23 to the afternoon of Sun., May 25. With 135 two-person teams participating, it’s a fantastic opportunity to see the magnificent fishing bounty our local lakes offer. Next, on Saturday, June 14 will be Unlock the Summer. Arguably Bobcaygeon’s favourite event, it will combine a number of activities into a day-long, family-oriented festivity. On Aug. 6, in a suitably-decorated Boyd Heritage Museum room, there will be the small and intimate Afternoon Tea. Last year’s event celebrated the Queen’s 60th jubilee and the birth of Prince George; this year’s will mark the museum’s 125th anniversary. The ladies will be decked out in their finest gowns and properly attired men are also invited. Midnight Madness, a chamber co-production and one of the community’s unquestioned top fun times, will fill Bolton St. and King St. E. with fun and frivolity. There will be bouncy castles and climbing walls, bands and dancing in the streets on the long weekend’s Sat., Aug. 2. Just in time to greet the Fall, Sept.14 and 15 mark the annual Bobcaygeon Cruisefest. This great event will again remind us of the time when family vehicles had personalities, were powered by fourcylinder engines fuelled by 40 cent a gallon “regular” and almost never exceeded the speed limits. If you want to get up close and intimate with

most of these events, you can do so as a planning committee member or day-of volunteer.

Midnight Madness update

Attention artists and artisans. Hello, Farmer’s Market participants. Midnight Madness wants you. With its third planning meeting “in the can” and a fourth coming up, some elements – locations, entertainment, publicity, vendors – have been confirmed or are under negotiation. But one aspect is so far sadly lacking – the hoped-for central presence of both the artists/artisans and agricultural groups in this fun event. The committee would appreciate having each group designate one or more members to decide on locations and space and other needs in order to meet with the committee and firm up the arrangements. Step One would be to contact committee chair Kent Leckie (ReMax-Bobcaygeon, 705-738-2378) or Marylynn Lindsay (Purdy’s Jewellers, 705-7382373). This should be a priority as the committee’s next meeting, at the Municipal Building, is 5:15 p.m. May 5. See you there. The three favourite activities – rock wall, castle bouncer and bungee run – have all been confirmed. One of the expected four or five bands – which will play its “gig” at My Favourite Things on King St. E. – has been confirmed, with businesses sponsoring other bands asked to advise the committee of their progress.

If your medium of choice is painting, pottery, sculptures, handmade jewelry, wood carving, fabric art or stained-glass this show is for you. LINDSAY - Residents have told local family health teams and local MP Barry Devolin that health care must remain public and funded; expanded dental care is needed along with medication coverage and seniors’ care. They also said the health care system should focus on healthy living, holistic wellness and preventing disease to save costs. A report was recently handed to Devolin following consultation meetings on future health care in Bobcaygeon, Fenelon Falls, Lindsay, Omemee, Beaverton and Haliburton. “People overwhelmingly indicated they wanted to sustain and expand our health care system,” Marian Hodson, executive director of Kawartha North Family Health Care, said in a press release. She added “They want continued and more care in specific areas.” President of the CKL Family Heath Team, Dr. Ruth Wilson said “As a family doctor, I noted peoples’ focus on the big picture, seeing that things like access to nutritious food, housing and good jobs also help keep us healthy.” In explaining the rationale for the public consultations and subsequent report, CKL Family Health Team executive director Mike Perry said: “The federal government’s agreement with the provinces regarding health funding expires this year, so we felt it was a good time to provide patients’ views to the government moving forward.” The report will also be presented to MP Laurie Scott. “The people at the consultations were very clear: they don’t want their views to gather dust on

LINDSAY - The Ross Memorial Hospital’s Walk of Life in support of the cardiac rehabilitation program takes place Friday, May 2. The cardiac rehabilitation team assists people who have had a heart attack, heart surgery, symptoms of heart disease, or those who are at high risk of developing heart disease. The program provides education, exercise, monitoring and support for participants and their families. The program participates in the “Walk of Life” to raise funds to ensure that the program has the equipment it needs to serve the community. The official warm-up begins at 1:45 p.m. and the walk will start at 2 p.m.

It is the first of five annual payments toward the bank’s $50,000 pledge. The Imagine the Future campaign raised $5.8 million to purchase the new MRI, a 128-slice CT scanner and redevelop the hospital’s diagnostic imaging department. “We’re so grateful for the Scotiabank’s commitment to local healthcare,” said Coons. “Since the MRI was installed in January, it has been impacting patients’ lives, and thanks to the advanced capabilities of our new CT scanner, our physicians are able to diagnose patients faster than ever.” – Submitted

Through the winter, Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes offered an indoor walking program that proved to be more popular than organizers had expected. Each Thursday evening at Lindsay Collegiate, as many as 50 people - from teenagers to seniors - took part in the one-hour Get With It indoor walking program. Considering the brutal winter that we experienced, perhaps agency reps should not have been surprised that providing a warm and safe place to get some exercise turned out to be so popular. The free sessions also gave participants an opportunity to get a large portion of the recommended 150 minutes per week of moderateto vigorous physical activity in order to achieve healthy benefits. Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines stress the obvious fact that more physical activity provides greater health benefits. Being active for at least 150 minutes per week can help reduce the risk of premature death, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, certain types of cancer, Type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, overweight and obesity. It can also lead to improved fitness, strength and mental health. As Community Care’s mandate broadens to the promotion of healthy lifestyles as well as the provision of support services, the walking program fit perfectly with the agency’s vision of a healthy community for one and all. There are now plans to expand the number of walking program opportunities in the warmer spring and summer months. Last year, introductory sessions for Nordic Pole Walking were offered. Due to positive response and increased inquiries, the agency hopes to increase such offerings in the weeks ahead. During the past 14 years, I have been blessed to work with an amazing group of volunteers. Keep up the good work—you do make a difference. Small acts of kindness can make a difference in other people’s lives more than we can imagine! I have also been privilegedto assist many clients from very young to very elderly. Living life, experiencing challenges and pulling through—these are all things I have learned from so many great people from all walks of life. To my mentor, Pat, my sincere gratitude. of Bobcaygeon passed away peacefully at Peterborough Regional Health Centre on Thursday, April 17, 2014 at the age of 71 after a courageous battle with cancer. Daughter of the late Gwen and Gerry Pearson of Toronto. She is survived by her beloved husband Peter Michaluk of Bobcaygeon. Sister to Robert Pearson (Carol) of Alliston. Cherished aunt to Janice (Boyd) Taylor of Oakville and their children Joseph, Benjamin and Samantha, Bobby (Michele) Pearson and their children Phillippe, Victor and Ariana and Gary (Neli) Pearson and their daughters Rachel and Emily. One of Sally’s favourite pastimes was to spend time at the family cottage in Georgian Bay. While living in Bobcaygeon Sally was an active member of the community and enjoyed being a member at the Bobcaygeon Curling Club and burning up the microphone at the Bobcaygeon Legion singing Karaoke. BOBCAYGEON - Fred and Heather Strang of Strang’s valu-mart in Bobcaygeon were named the Bobcaygeon and Area Chamber of Commerce Citizens of the Year at the Sat., Apr. 26 Awards of Excellence at the Dunsford Community Centre. Fred paid tribute to Heather, saying she puts tremendous effort into the community and spearheads their work. “We feel good about what we do in the community. It’s the right thing to do.
