1. The images from Fort McMurray, Alberta, this week have been shocking . . . frightening. I’ve heard the word “apocalypse” used more than once. A whole city of more than 53,000 people evacuated as surrounding forests went up in flames. Some neighbourhood more than 80 percent destroyed. And who knows what’s next, because even as we go to press, people are predicting another day of high winds, high temperatures and low humidity expected to fan the flames. The miracle is that, to date, there’s been no loss of human life. Depending on who’s talking, Fort McMurray is either one of the strongest economic engines in the nation, or one of the greatest contributors to greenhouse gases and climate change in the world. In reality, it’s both. Now, as Canadians, we face the challenge of showing compassion and

generosity to the stricken people of Fort McMurray and surrounding area. In the days ahead, many, many people are going to need our help. I have faith that we will rise to the occasion. It’s what we do, isn’t it? 2. I was told this week it’s time to retire my 1995 Ford Ranger pickup truck. She’s taken me nearly 100,000 kms since I bought her three years ago for $1,700. Friends tell me: “She sure doesn’t owe you anything.” The truth is, I owe her. In 1,200+ hours together, she’s taken me down so many beautiful highways and byways—with skis, bike or canoe in the back box. She’s been “rode hard and put up wet.” And all she ever asked was to be fed, watered, and shown some affection. Here’s to you, old gal.

Benevolent groups help many
It was with great interest that I read Joe Berta’s recent letter to The Kawartha Promoter entitled, “I am a refugee, myself” (April 22, page 4). I glanced at the title, and became intrigued by what I thought would be a human-interest story about your successful integration into Canadian society after fleeing Soviet oppression in Hungary during the 1950s. Unfortunately my original optimism soon turned to disappointment. On one hand you bestow God’s blessings on the Syrian family currently residing in Bobcaygeon. On the other hand you feel compelled to criticize The Promoter for publishing too many “lengthy updates” on what is, in my humble opinion, an incredible humanitarian success story. You refer to many needy people in our country: impoverished seniors, veterans, those suffering from mental illness, hard-working ordinary folk working for poor wages, and . . . a host of services currently being cut. Who could argue that it is important to do what we can to help solve these ongoing problems? However, you go on to state that, “In the minds of the average Canadian not doing so well, the questions remain. Why do we not have benevolent groups helping them?” I certainly do not doubt that there are very needy people here who require our help. I also know that many people suffering locally may feel a certain amount of trepidation in extending a helping hand to those who have been rescued from dire situations in foreign lands. There are organizations and individuals who do their best to provide assistance locally and across Canada. Churches, community groups, charitable organizations, individuals, governments, and commercial enterprises all help out. In the same paper that you criticize for not publishing stories that reflect our own community’s needs, the following “non-Syrian” stories were included: Ross thanks hundreds of volunteers, Thanks to Meals on Wheels vols, Cut by Ross Hospital Cuts,

And Yet - Despite Cuts, UW Touchdown Nears Half A Mil, etc. Our local people continue to step up to the plate to help out others and draw attention to worthwhile initiatives. Helping our Syrian family does not negate the need to support others. Everyone should do what they can to practice the “Golden Rule.” Thank the Good Lord for our volunteers. “Do we need to make such a big deal out of it?” you ask. “Do those (lengthy ads) serve any good purpose other than making ourselves look good?” Of course, the answer to both questions is. “Yes!” The United Way City of Kawartha Lakes helped 7,849 children in youth access programs; 25,975 adults found support for their health and well being; 4,597 persons struggling with poverty were helped. These facts were reported in The Promoter. Was that bragging? I think not. It was reported in order to inform the public of what has been accomplished. In Canada, we have a right to speak out. That is the nature of the democratic nation to which you came to escape tyranny all those years ago. If you didn’t hear it back then, let me say it now, “Welcome to Canada.” May God Bless. Not a popularity contest
I would like to respond to Joe Berta’s letter (April 22, page 4). Mr. Berta asked if BARC is providing updates on our Syrian family only to make ourselves “look good.” We are not in a popularity contest. We are simply providing updates on a human-interest story that so many people in our community are involved with, directly and indirectly. The story of any Syrian refugee family coming to Canada is an incredible one, which reminds us on a basic humanitarian level of how lucky we are to live in Canada. Sure there are many groups of people, as Mr. Berta suggests, who need more support here in our own “backyard.” I feel it is an insult, however, to the many charities, volunteers, and politicians who are trying to make our world better, to suggest that we are sweeping their needs “under the carpet.” Individually we may not be able to save the world, but collectively we can make a real difference. I’m sorry that you see only a world full of “greed and indifference.” From BARC’s perspective, we have found our amazing community to be generous
and grateful, with a strong desire to pass it on. It seems to me that your mind, Mr. Berta, is already closed. Perhaps you should rekindle your gratitude for being adopted by Canada. I am just enjoying reading The Promoter, but something has got me upset (From my perch, April 22, page 3). I’m sorry, but if you want to be in Canada, then show your face. If you have chosen to join us here in our beautiful country, then you shouldn’t be able to hide I’m a pure Canadian and if I was to hide my face in your country, I would be shot down. CKL is more than Lindsay
It seems that, from community transportation to fire services, unless you live in Lindsay, don’t expect much from city council. Taking the community transit out of service was the first blow to the great community of Bobcaygeon, but now to take fire services away is the proverbial “nail in the coffin.” All communities have a right to expect fire services—especially in smaller communities with so many seniors. Fire services are essential and not negotiable. As noted by W. Riddell of Bobcaygeon (I’ll pay for essential services,April 22, page5), fire is usually first on the scene. That service, especially to seniors, is critical in saving lives. Will it take a death to make city council rethink this decision? There cannot be a price put on this important service. A creative light among us has gone out
If I had to hazard a guess, there are not many
of the residents of Bobcaygeon who would know, or even have met, Chris Clark. And why would you? He lived a relatively quiet life in a house at 1 Main Street in Bobcaygeon. Old timers might remember it as a onetime bait shop that Chris had lovingly refurbished into a cozy retreat. Chris’s place. He was in his backyard, and our dog was in the screened-in porch. When the dog saw Chris he barked and Chris was startled and literally jumped. I picked up our dog and went outside and down to his place to apologize for Finnegan’s barking. Chris asked why we had named him Finnegan and I replied that originally we’d had two dogs—Casey and Finnegan—as Mr. Dressup was our daughter’s favourite program. Well, he got very excited, as it turns out he was the primary writer for Mr. Dressup. He also wrote many episodes of Sesame Street and more than a thousand scripts for stage plays, musicals, dinner theatre documentaries videos and television specials. A recipient of many awards such as the Gemini, the Margaret Collier Award (the highest award for writing for television and movies) for exceptional contribution to the arts, Chris was also an accomplished concert pianist and composer. Chris passed away on April 19 at Ross Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Bobcaygeon has lost a creative light who many of us probably didn’t know was living among us. Gord Killen Bobcaygeon

My beloved cat, Blackie, came home one day last week seriously injured. Imagine my shock when the vet told me x-rays showed he had been shot. I couldn’t believe it. Who in my quiet, peaceful neighbourhood would do such a cruel thing? But x-rays don’t lie—and they clearly showed the bullet lodged in his hip. Somebody had willfully shot him. Why? Gentle and placid in nature, 15 years old, Blackie did not present a threat to anyone—not man, nor bird, nor even a mouse. He was simply taking a quiet stroll along a sunny street, enjoying the warmth of spring after a long, confining winter. Why would someone want to put a stop to that? Was it because he hated cats? Or was it because, even in this age of enlightenment far removed from primitive times, the lust for blood still lingers? Good-bye my dear cat. You were a beauty to behold, a treasure loved by many. Doctors against cuts
In the last six months, I, along with 11,000 other concerned Ontario doctors, have watched with mounting frustration as the Ontario government has crippled our healthcare system with shortsighted policies and funding cuts that undermine the ability of front-line doctors to care for patients. These days, many family doctors and specialists struggle to keep their practices afloat. Even though physician offices are like small businesses, doctors
prioritize patient care over profit. When cuts escalated in 2015, many doctors had to reduce staff, reduce services or close their clinics altogether. Each week, we hear of older doctors retiring early or younger doctors leaving the province. No one is replacing them. Bureaucratic roadblocks prevent family doctors from starting team-based practices, and stop new family doctors from providing necessary services like house calls, obstetrics, inpatient care, emergency room coverage and palliative care. Specialist funding has been cut for managing chronic diseases like diabetes, heart failure, colitis, addiction, cirrhosis and kidney disease. In Kawartha Lakes, we can see the impact of these actions in community-based care and services. Our emergency departments, inpatient wards and operating rooms are bursting at the seams, facing growing need and shrinking resources. Thousands of patients are without access to care, a number that grows each day. Wait-lists for specialists and surgeries grow daily. The last time a government acted unilaterally against physicians, they drove hundreds of doctors out. One in four patients had no family doctor. It took nearly 20 years to fix that mistake. What is the first step towards fixing this situation? Binding arbitration. We need a fair mechanism to end this standoff between doctors and government. Every other essential service already has it in their contracts. Past, present and future patients should all be incensed that the government has deliberately
underfunded the healthcare system, capping it below the rate of inflation, and of actual patient need. Our taxes fund doctors, nurses, hospitals and community organizations through OHIP. Underfunding means doctors can’t pay for community clinics, hospitals can’t hire nurses to staff hospital beds, and operating rooms sit empty. We cannot keep doing more with less. Please stand with us to demand the Ontario Liberals commit to a long-term plan to manage healthcare so patients no longer suffer and frontline staff no longer burn out in an unsustainable environment. TOO MUCH FIRE TRUCK?: After learning failure to act now means their truck will cost about $60,000 more next year, council confirmed its earlier budgeted decision to purchase a new, $627,000 pumper/tanker for the currently-underconstruction Bethany one-truck fire hall. Mayor Andy Letham expressed frustration about council second-guessing its own decisions, but Ward 9 Councillor Isaac Breadner argued the original decision was based on faulty information from city staff. Ward 14 Councillor Gerard Jilesen—30 years a volunteer fire fighter—described the state-of-theart truck as a Cadillac where a Chev would do. SIGN UP FOR MILK RUN: Discounted early registration for Lindsay’s 38th annual Milk Run is now open to runners eager to get a jump on the July 17 event. The discounted cost—until 4 pm on June 24—is $40 for the 10-km run, and $35 for the 5 km. April 23 to clear trees in and around Wild Turkey Road for its wind farm. The clearing is authorized by a development agreement under Divisional Court (file 37/15), which CKL has appealed. The Court of Appeal will hear it early this month. COLLABORATING WITH FLEMING: Council has renewed the city’s long-standing commitment to collaboration with Fleming College—including student employment, city staff acting as advisors, CKL hosting research and pilot projects, and sharing assets, equipment and facilities. Fleming is a key partner to help the city protect and enhance water quality, with two joint pilot projects at Lindsay’s Water Pollution Control Plant to test innovative waste-water quality improvement technologies. Fleming is also a local economic driver, as the Frost Campus attracts more than 1,700 full time students annually and employs more than 300 staff. BOOKFACE: The free, annual celebration of Kawartha Lakes youth is set for the Victoria Park Armoury in Lindsay this Friday, May 6, from 4:30 to 10 pm. It begins with an Awards Ceremony for Youth, and continues with a youth-oriented art show, music, food and giveaways. Robert E. Young Construction Ltd. of Selwyn and Royal Paving Ltd. of Lindsay will pulverize the existing road surface, do base repairs, replace culverts, ditch, gravel and finish the roads with a flexible pavement (tar and chip) or asphalt product. The project runs from mid-May to midSeptember. SEWAGE ASSESSMENTS: Mandatory Maintenance Sewage Assessments will begin May 25 for residents in and around the municipal wells of Sonya, Pleasant Point, Canadiana Shores and Mariposa Estates. The program, which requires assessment of sewage systems on properties adjacent to the vulnerable zone of a surface-water intake area or within the vulnerable area of a municipal wellhead, was instituted under the Clean Water Act after the Walkerton Inquiry. A 2016 schedule is available at: city.kawarthalakes.on.ca/mmssip SPRING YARD WASTE: Spring leaf and yard curbside collection will be Friday, June 3 (if your regular collection day is Monday or Wednesday), and Friday, May 20 (if regular collection is Tuesday or Thursday). If you miss it, you can take yard waste free to any CKL landfill site year round. Material must be in brown-paper, yard-waste bags or bundled with string (maximum 90 cm long, less than 18 kilos, branches less than 7.5 cm diameter). Plastic bags, Christmas trees, grass clippings, sod, soil, root balls (from planters), or larger stumps and branches will not be accepted. PAINT RE-USE: You can take (get) partial cans of paint to (from) the Fenelon Falls and Lindsay Ops Landfill Household Hazardous Waste Depots, from May 1 to Oct. 15. “We often get small quantities
of perfectly good paint and stain dropped off at our facilities,” says Waste Management Operations Supervisor Heather Dzurko. “Through our Drop in the Bucket Paint Reuse Program, it can be taken home by others and put to good use.” SUMMER LANDFILL HOURS: Three of the city’s landfill sites—Eldon, Laxton, and Somerville— will be open longer to accommodate spring and summer activity. Buckhorn beautification a go

The new plan, approved April 19, will offer financial incentives to help building and business owners improve landscaping, commercial structures and signage. The municipality’s Economic Development Committee will administer the plan, which will also be used to establish a strategy for public-works improvements, including to walkways, streetscapes and landscaping.
TL begins 10 years of septic inspections

The Trent Lakes Municipal Septic Re-inspection Program will begin in a few weeks, Matt Faris, a health inspector for the Peterborough City-County Health Unit told Trent Lakes council April 19. The program is expected to take 10 years to complete. Inspectors will examine 300 properties the first year. The rationale for the program is to guard the health of the environment and to protect citizens against failing septic systems. Property owners will pay $270 for the inspection, which will be added to the tax bill at $27 a year for the 10 years of the program. Faris told council that “85 to 90 percent of septic SocialServicesDivision systems won’t go beyond the re-inspection stage.” The remaining 10 to 15 percent of systems will need maintenance, to be paid for by the property owner.

Kawartha Land Trust made it award number four—and rightly so—when the Bobcaygeon and Area Chamber of Commerce recognized KLT with its Not For Profit Achievement Award at its annual Awards of Excellence Dinner at Lakeview Arts Barn April 23. KLT had already had its successful work on Chiminis recognized with awards from Sustainable Peterborough, Kawartha Conservation, and the City of Kawartha Lakes Environmental Advisory Committee (all previously reported in The Promoter). Walking for the water

On Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 8, the Kawartha Water Awareness Walk begins at Trent University. It heads south along the Otonabee River into Peterborough, then back up the other bank to Trent again. For the past two years I’ve been one of “those who walk for water” (Nibi Emosaawdamajig). This was my experience: In 2014, I arrived at Scugog Island at 6:30 am for a sunrise ceremony. A copper pail was filled with water and carried around the lake by Anishinaabekwewag (Indigenous women) who blessed and sang to the water. Last year the walk was from Trent University north and back along the Otonabee River. In late afternoon, I was honoured to be asked to carry the water. It felt heavy and yet light—sharing responsibility and sharing hope. Why is it important? I begin my days with a drink of water, by “making water” and flushing it away with more water, by using water to wash or shower, make coffee, boil an egg, water my garden—all before 8 am. Our lives are structured around having an endless supply. We learned in school about the water cycle. We did not learn that water is sacred; that treating it as a commodity may result in huge rivers drying up;

that the spirit of the water is crying out. Remember the thousands of dead carp in the Kawartha Lakes in 2007? Over 110 First Nations communities across Canada—including Curve Lake—are on boil-water advisories, surrounded by water unfit to drink, resulting in a tremendous health hazard. Anishinaabe grandmother Josephine Mandamin is the inspiration and mentor for the Water Walks. She has walked around the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River. In 2010, Shirley Williams, an elder from Curve Lake, and Liz Osawamick, began the local Water Walks to bring a greater awareness of our collective responsibility to maintain clean water for the next seven generations. Join us. You will learn how blessed we are to have water. You will feel the connection we have with each other and mother earth through sharing and caring for the water. We walk together. It’s not a race; it’s fun. You can walk as much or as little as you like. Celebrate those blooming tulips
The Norland Horticultural Society will hold a Tulip Blooming Ceremony to celebrate the first blooming of its Dutch-Canadian Friendship Tulip Garden. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 14, 11 am, at The Old School House Community Centre on Monck Road (Hwy 45) in Norland. The horticultural society was one of 140 recipients across Canada last year of a DutchCanadian Friendship Tulip Garden. It marked the 70th anniversary of the 1945 gift of 100,000 Dutch tulip bulbs to Canada in appreciation for Canadian soldiers help in the liberation of the Netherlands. Canada also hosted the Dutch Royal Family in Ottawa during WWII. Students from Ridgewood School’s Grade 8 class helped plant them around Norland last October. “We feel honoured to have received these tulips,” said Murray Walker, President of the Norland Horticultural Society. “We cordially invite the public to attend the Tulip Blooming Ceremony in honour of the liberation of the Netherlands and the Canadians who were instrumental in achieving their freedom.” Forty-four names of local young service men are listed in Hope (formerly Norland) United Church.

I may have mentioned before that when my husband and I purchased our current home the lawn had not been cut in a LONG time. It was pretty much a hay field. Our neighbours were very happy to see it cleaned up and mowed regularly. It took an hour a week on our Cub Cadet riding mower, then an hour doing the ditches with the push mower, and another half hour or so every other week with the whipper-snipper. And then, one day, I heard something about a “no-mow” lawn. For real? There’s such a thing as a lawn you don’t have to cut—well rarely? I tell you no lies. It doesn’t need water, pesticides or fertilizers, provides nutrition for pollinators, and still looks like a lush green carpet. We recommend every two years or 200 hours of operation. • Water pump repair, from just replacing the impeller to rebuilding the sea-water pump. Not all water pump impellers are created equal or operate in equal conditions. Most manufacturers recommend impellers should be changed every 200 hours, or whenever overheating or reduced water flow is observed. • Inspect “sacrificial anodes” on outdrives, inboard shafts and trim tabs, and replace them when 50 percent gone. This is such an overlooked area. Sacrificial anodes, as they are called, are pieces of metal that corrode first, sacrificing themselves to stop the corrosion from eating away at your in-water running gear. These anodes are often called “zincs,” as that is a common metal used to produce them. • A good coat of wax every year helps protect the finish of the gel coat and paint from the sun. • Larger boats should have the anti-foul paint on the bottom of their boat recoated every two to three years. Anti-foul paint is put on the bottom of the boat to protect it from underwater organisms that attach to the hull, affecting performance. It also helps to reduce osmosis on the hull, and is available in many colours • And have your bellows checked.

It’s a bonus day for florists, card manufacturers and gift sellers—and the aforementioned phone companies. Mothers Day got its start in the United States. In 1868, Ann Jarvis launched a committee to establish “Mother’s Friendship Day,” with the aim of reuniting families after the Civil War. She died in 1905, but her daughter, Anna, honoured her mother with a

memorial, and that led to the first Mother’s Day—in 1908—three years after Ann’s death. Anna—who never married or had children of her own—wanted to see Mother’s Day become a national holiday. She started a massive letter-writing campaign to newspapers and politicos, pointing out that American holidays were biased toward honouring males. By 1912 many states, towns and churches had adopted Mother’s Day as an annual holiday, and Jarvis had established the Mother’s Day International Association. She also trademarked both “Mother’s Day” and “the second Sunday in May.” Her persistence paid off in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure officially establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. Anna Jarvis initially worked with the floral industry to help raise awareness of Mother’s Day. But by as early as 1920, was already expressing disappointment about how commercialized it had become. She asked people to stop buying Mother’s Day flowers, cards and candies. She also launched countless lawsuits against groups that had used the name “Mother’s Day,” eventually spending most of her money on legal fees. Towards a Community Foundation?
Thursday, May 12, is the date for a final “feasibility meeting” to explore establishing a Community Foundation (CF) for the City of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County. A well-focused CF, explains Mike Perry, one of the prime movers behind the idea and a New Democratic Party candidate in the last federal election, could “address gaps in community development here in our area.” It might address issues like workplace skills, local environment, arts, community projects on housing, disabilities and poverty, farm support, micro-credit and youth innovation. There are currently 191 CFs across Canada, and Perry says having a local one would show businesses who are considering moving here that

Health & Wellness Referendum to Save Local Hospitals
Marlene Beaman-McQuay moved to Lindsay last August, thinking this was where she and her husband, who suffers with Parkinson’s disease, would live out their days. Now she thinks she may have to move somewhere else. Cuts at her local hospital—Ross Memorial, which she chose to settle only blocks away from—are threatening to leave the couple without the health-care services that are essential to them in their retirement years. As chair of the local Health Coalition (HC), Marlene is encouraging Kawartha Lakes residents to get out and vote this month to reverse the provincial cuts to local hospitals and other health care that have been going on across Ontario for nearly a decade—and are reaching crisis proportions. Volunteers like her, in more than 20 communities across Ontario, including Kawartha Lakes and Peterborough, have launched an ambitious and novel protest—a cross-province, volunteer-led referendum on Saturday, May 28. Ontarians will be asked to vote, YES or NO to the following statement: “Ontario’s government must stop the cuts to our community hospitals and restore services, funding and staff to meet our communities’ needs for care.”

I was raised in a situation where there were a lot of kids around—and a lot of aunties, uncles and grandparents in a multi-family atmosphere. It was what sociologists call an “extended family,” as opposed to the “modern nuclear family” of mom, dad, and kids. I grew up being raised primarily by my NOKOMIS—my grandmother, who was a family matriarch. She was born in Curve Lake in the 1890s. She was very much caught up in a world of change. She spoke our language very well and lived a lifestyle that was Ojibwa Mississauga, but she also tried to adapt to the world of Canadian things. She had to navigate the change. She married twice. Her first husband died when she was in her 30s, and she had to raise the kids on her own for a while until she married again. She was amazingly adept at canoeing, and basketry was her forte. She traded her baskets around the lakes. She also liked to clean and do domestic work, so she worked as a housekeeper for many of the cottagers who came in the summer months to this area. She was also an amazing cook and would cook for the area fishing lodges. Adding to all of this responsibility she had a political sense, and as a leader she ran for council for the Curve Lake Band—and got in. She was active in politics for a while; she could span both worlds quite well. I have many fond memories of picking
blueberries and apples with her, and even of going into the rice beds with her to shoot ducks. Then we would come home and make duck soup. One time in June, we went ODEMIN (strawberry) picking and left early in the morning when the dew was still on the grass. She said “Hope we don’t meet up with a bear.” Well, we were in amongst the brush near some meadows and I was making sure I was right beside my grandmother because I was scared of MUKWA (the bear). I was so intently picking berries that I forgot to keep track of where she was. I looked up and she was not there. I panicked. I started yelling for her so she could hear me. I was scared and I felt so lost. She was only over a knoll about 10 feet away from me picking berries. When I yelled she stood up and said “Oh my gosh. Keep quiet. The bears will hear you.” I was so glad to see her. She always said if we come across a bear we have to speak to it in ANISHINAABEMOWIN (the Ojibwa language) because it is the only language they can understand. You can even tell it to go away in the language . . . but that is another story.

That’s how the Lindsay Creative Quilters’ Guild (LCQG) is celebrating National Quilt Month and living up to its motto, “Keeping Quilting Alive.” Each of about two dozen participating stores will showcase some form of quilting—either inside the venue or in the window. Included will be quilts for people living with cancer and quilts for soldiers suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
