If you believe in something you have to fight for it. It could be your children, your marriage, a school, the street or area where you have chosen to make your home, your business or the city where you live. If any one of these aspects of your life is threatened you need to rally the people that live and work in your community and fight for

what’s important. Sitting and complaining about the problem won’t cut it. Just ask the residents of GalwayCavendish and Harvey Township protesting the construction of a mega quarry and concrete plant in the area where they live. Standing room only at the township office two weeks ago. Young and old united by a common thread to preserve and protect what’s important to them. Win or lose they carry on knowing their concerns were voiced in a public, official forum. As we go to press Parks Canada is proposing a reduction in operating hours of the Trent Severn Waterway. This will dramatically

impact the tourist trade, the cottage industry, independent businesses, arts and culture in the Kawarthas, and much more. If you believe in the well-being of the community and the people who live and work here, you will make sure your voice is heard. Contact the Bobcaygeon and Area Chamber of Commerce and ask them what you can do to help. They are here to help promote and protect the health and well-being of the community. You may have to sign a petition or write a letter to the Government to let them know you don’t agree with their decision. One thing is for sure. You have to fight for what you believe in.

Village Voice DECREASED ACCESS TO TRENT SEVERN DRAMATICALLY IMPACTS COMMERCE, WATERFRONT OWNERS

As President of the Bobcaygeon and Area Chamber of Commerce, representing 270 members and the community at large, I am writing to express our concern over the proposed changes to the operations of the Trent-Severn Waterway, which we feel will have a dramatically negative impact on our region and our community. The information we read in the media indicates that in 2012, the hours of operation will be reduced; details not as yet released. In 2013, the hours of operation will be reduced further; details not as yet released. Parks Canada will provide those affected by the pending changes with information as the agency finalizes its analysis. But it doesn’t plan to consult the public. The net effect of such actions will be significantly detrimental to the region’s economy. Marine traffic on the Trent-Severn Waterway is at the heart of much of the commerce enjoyed by businesses along the waterway. A reduction in hours is equally harmful to the owners of properties fronting on the system, as it will reduce boat access to their docks and the enjoyment of this natural wonder, resulting in a reduction of the value of their investment in those properties. In our estimation, investment by the Government in the operations, maintenance and further development of the Trent-Severn Waterway should be increased rather than reduced, especially since present and anticipated economic problems are encouraging people to take vacations and travel closer to home. Any move by the Government to decrease the access and value of the waterway

thus flies in the face of this new reality. As well, and most important in the view of this Chamber of Commerce, is that such action would threaten the livelihoods of a large number of business people and, in the extreme, severely undercut the financial viability of many of our rural communities, which are already suffering the effects of the present economic downturn. We urge the Government to seriously consider the impact of such actions and that it actively invite, consult, listen to, and take into consideration the opinions and ideas about the Waterway from the long list of stakeholders. In this regard, we would appreciate receiving clarification of the steps the Government is considering, so we may communicate the information to our membership and other interested local parties. Thank you,

Jim DeClute, president, Bobcaygeon and Area Chamber of Commerce.

STUDENT CONCERNED ABOUT EFFECT OF STYROFOAM IN WATERWAYS

My name is Aaron Le Souder and I am in Grade 7 at Stratford Central Public School. I recently had to do a project at school for my science course. As I thought about a topic, my concerns turned to my cottage on Sturgeon Lake. I love to fish. But I have watched fishermen let Styrofoam worm lids and/or containers just blow into the lake, and leave them there. I have learned in school it can take 25 years to biodegrade these lids. I decided I would test other kinds of materials that could be used for worm containers. As I have learned, there are other materials available that will break down better than Styrofoam. I also tested to see if these materials would maintain the temperature of the dirt for the worms as well as Styrofoam does. I compared corrugated cardboard, bristle board (which is like box board), a Tim Horton’s cup, a McDonald’s cup (2 layers), and an “eco-friendly” cup made from recycled fibers. They all performed better than the Styrofoam, and the corrugated cardboard was the best. I am writing this letter because I am very concerned about the impact of the Styrofoam in our waterways. This is a problem that could affect our

fish and some people’s drinking water and, in the end, our whole ecosystem. Is it possible to someday ban the use of Styrofoam for making worm containers?

BMC SEEKING FINANCIAL SUPPORT

The Bobcaygeon Music Council is planning for this summer’s Concerts in the Park but unfortunately two of the grants that we applied for did not come through. So once again, we are desperately trying to find enough funds to move ahead with our planned summer programme. Our target is $15,000, which will ensure that we can produce the complete summer series. Opportunities for sponsorship of concerts, full series, sound, lighting and venue are all available. Also, donations by individuals and businesses are always welcome. Charitable receipts are available. Please help us maintain this tradition of fabulous summer concerts. Thanks to our many past supporters. We couldn’t do it without you. As always the BMC continues to seek ways to contribute to our community through concerts, bursary programmes, school concerts, and school and community workshops. The response from you, the community, has been so overwhelmingly positive and continues to motivate us to move forward with our many projects. The BMC is extremely grateful to the Bobcaygeon Legacy C.H.E.S.T. Fund for their support of our 2012 Summer Brass and Woodwind Workshops which will be held at Kawartha Settlers’ Village. Woodwind Workshop is July 2-6 and Brass Workshop 9-13 July. Check our website for more information or to register. We also gratefully acknowledge the grants

received from the Ontario Arts Council and the City of Kawartha Lakes (Community Partnership and Development Fund) in support of the Concerts in the Park 2012 series. Thanks to Chris Clark for his wonderful Letter to the Editor on the Bobcaygeon Music Council.

UNITING COMMUNITY IN THE NAME OF SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability is about creating the kind of world we want for ourselves, our neighbours and future generations. It involves living our lives and making decisions as individuals, organizations and societies so the quality of life available to future generations is equal to, or even exceeds what we inherited from our ancestors. Committed to these goals, the City of Kawartha Lakes is developing a long term Sustainability Plan in consultation with community members. The plan will provide direction for the municipality to realize sustainability objectives it has for environmental, cultural, social and economic dimensions of its identity. What does this really mean? We will look at everything from lake health to air quality; everything in the natural environment as well as cultural and social aspects as assets that need to be preserved. This plan must be costed out so it is affordable and in many cases, if we make change now, it will save precious dollars over time.

An Important Message for New Patients If you have already completed an application to join the Kawartha North Family Health Team in Bobcaygeon or Fenelon Falls, we have good news – you ARE accepted and you WILL be a patient. If we have not yet called you for an appointment, we will. Our team is working through a long list of people like you who are seeking a family doctor close to home. April 20, 2012 - The Promoter

For example, if we start investing in renewables such as solar, it will save tax dollars. Many businesses are looking at green options to improve their bottom lines. Even Walmart is going green because it just makes economic sense. In 10-20 years will we drive vehicles that don’t rely on gasoline? Everything will be either recycled or composted. Will we have a healthier community that is walking and cycling more and relying on local food that hasn’t traveled thousands of miles to get to your plate? Will there be better transportation systems so we don’t have to rely on the car as much? Will we have strong social and cultural institutions so our communities are stronger and more unifed? Through this plan we will be backcasting, that is setting goals and visions and then producing a road map on how to get there. During this journey we will be calling on you, the community, for your input so this will truly be your plan. We will be hosting town hall meetings and developing facebook pages and a website to get your ideas to be incorporated into the plan. I hope everyone will get involved so we can create the community we want today and for the future. To learn more about the plan, come to Settlers Village on Earth Day and hear how you can put your ideas forward .We want to hear from you. Please participate in this wonderful vision for the future.

STAFFING CHANGES TO IMPACT BUDGET?

At the beginning of the ‘Open’ session of Council one of the major items from the ‘Closed’ session had to be approved which, when read by Judy Currins, City Clerk, were quickly approved by a show of hands. These were recommendations from the Human Resources Committee to Council for staff to proceed with all 2012 Budget approved position changes. Essentially the list covers a multitude of changes that can be a cause for concern as a taxpayer. Some appear to be promotions such as Emergency Measures Service • Assistant Fire Chief to Deputy Fire Chief, Support Services; • Assistant Fire Chief, Emergency Management to Deputy Chief, Fire; • Assistant Fire Chief, Operations to Deputy Fire Chief, Operations;

• Fire Prevention Officers to Fire Prevention Inspectors (3.0). In order to make some sense of what was going on I called Al Horsman, Chief Administration Officer. My first question to him was ‘how does the City monitor staff title changes to positions within the organization? Normally in business there is a Compensation Branch that does this’. The CAO replied that the City uses a third party firm that reviews all such requests and makes the necessary recommendations. It is then up to the City through the Human Resources Committee to decide what to recommend to Council and then Council decides. My next concern was ‘what is the impact on the budget?’ The CAO referred me to Appendix A of the Council and press material and , guiding me through the numbers, assured me that the impact would be negligible. Nevertheless, why a ‘Closed’ meeting? Why did the discussions surrounding the need for title changes have to be in ‘Closed’ session. Why couldn’t it have been done up front and in the open so people such as those charged with reporting on Council activities could bear witness to these machinations? And title changes usually mean salary adjustments. Be assured that in 2013, I will be comparing salaries from 2012.

The MNR would cover wild land fire suppression whether or not there is an agreement in place. However, when there is no agreement with the municipality for provision of wild land fire suppression, the Ministry of Natural Resources charges hourly rates from the time of the initial request until the unit returns to home base.

of approximately $1,280,135.65. Low-income families may qualify for subsidy to assist with the cost of licensed child care. Depending on the level of income, subsidy may equal the full cost of care or the parent may be required to pay a portion of the fee. Families may receive subsidies to support employment, education or developmental programs for a child with special needs. A standardized income test is used to determine subsidy eligibility. In 2011 there were approximately 782 licensed child care spaces in non-profit centres in the City of Kawartha Lakes and County of Haliburton, with another 14 licensed home child care sites in Kawartha Lakes.

TRANSFER STATION PROJECT CONTINUES TO CAUSE CONCERN

It appears that the design and building of a Transfer Station for a land fill site is not an easy task. This project has been around awhile and still evokes considerable concern from Council. Back in August of 2011, Council supported a Business Plan for a Transfer Station in Lindsay/Ops. Eventually it would receive funding from the Waste Diversion of Ontario’s Continuous lmprovement Fund (ClF) in the amount up to $432,732; balance of $574,998 to be covered by the City.

ORGANIC WASTE DOESN’T PASS INSPECTION

Part of the City’s waste management system is geared to recycling as much of our waste as possible. While at a landfill site, the inquisitive Ward 2 Councillor Yeo noticed trucks dumping an odious black sludge in another part of the landfill. Naturally he asked what they were doing and discovered that at the present time most of our organic waste does not pass MOE inspection criteria and as a result must be moved from one side of a landfill to another more distant spot. As a result of Yeo’s initiative, Council directed that Organic Composting Strategy should be referred to staff for a financial analysis with a report back to Council outlining the costs associated with proper composting programs, including expenditures and potential revenues.

Since then a request from the Ministry of the Environment to amend the Certificate of Approval (C of A) for the Lindsay Ops Landfill to allow receipt of recyclables from jurisdictions outside of CKL would provide regional efficiencies and cost savings to the public and as a result this was adopted. Council decided that the contract be referred back to the Chief Administration Officer (CAO) for further consideration of the Integrated Waste Management Strategy and once amended to report back to Council.

Q: Wind Power is free and in abundance in certain areas. The wind speeds are always higher on the shoreline, at the top of a hill, and in places free of obstructions. A: “Wind is not free. There are many periods when the wind is not blowing, and we have to use electricity to run wind turbines to ensure the bearings do not seize. Wind speeds are highest along the Great Lakes and the shore of Hudson Bay. Wind speed is not very high in our area. Wind companies look for the proximity to transmission lines.” Q: Wind Power does not generate “pollution”, or radioactive waste. It does not consume any of the non-renewable resources such as coal, natural gas, or oil. It is a renewable energy.

Q&A

with Heather Stauble, Councillor Ward 16, City of Kawartha Lakes on the pros and cons of Wind Power

A: “Each turbine requires approximately 75 acres of land, excavation for the road access, work area, transmission lines and the bases themselves, which are made of concrete. The road access requires building, re-aligning or re-enforcing existing roads to allow for the weight, size and length of the turbine to get around corners or up hills. There is considerable excavation and gravel laid down to gain access and then more construction is required to build the base. Some of these projects are proposed for environmentally, high aquifer vulnerability areas and protected land such as the Oak Ridges Moraine. The moraine is the water source for 250,000 people and is environmentally and ecologically important. Trees are cut, wildlife is disturbed, some endangered species are disturbed, harassed or killed, and all of the construction vehicles used generate green house gas. There are no environmental assessments required. Wind only generates when the wind blows and therefore must be backed up – generally by hydroelectric, natural gas and in some cases, coal and nuclear. In countries where they have more wind power, such as Germany and Spain, they have in fact built more coal-fired plants or bought natural gas generated-power from neighbouring countries in order to ensure there is a reliable source of energy. Every time we have to use a back-up source of electricity, the green house gas or radioactive waste associated with that back-up source is generated. Q: Wind Power can generate enough energy for large numbers of people. By using larger turbines connected to an electrical grid it allows people the

benefit of wind power without owning their own wind system. A: “Wind power only produces when the wind is blowing – mostly at night and in the winter, when the demand for power is lowest. On hot, humid days when demand for electricity is at its highest, wind is often not blowing and wind is generating at 0-4% of it’s nameplate capacity - in other words, if it’s potential capacity to generate was 100kw – it may be generating 0-4kw. According to the IESO website, a very productive turbine may produce about 30% of its nameplate capacity, generally at night and between the months of October and April. Wind produced 2.6% of the power generated last year in Ontario with approximately 900 turbines producing. To replace other sources we would need 35,000 industrial wind turbines, a new transmission system, and back up sources of power capable of starting up and shutting down quickly to ensure reliable power and prevent the grid from being overloaded. Q: Wind becomes a source of power during times when the electrical grid is out. For example, hurricanes, power outages, brown outs. A: “Wind power generated by industrial wind turbines feed directly into the grid and is then sold back to the consumer. If there is a hydro failure due to a hurricane or ice storm, the power generated by wind has no way of getting to consumers and is not able to provide the needed electricity. In addition, because wind comes into the grid in surges, much like waves, it can overload the grid and cause power failures. When the wind is blowing, other back-up sources of power are dumped to prevent too much power from overloading the grid and causing a blackout. Q: With new technology, the cost of a residential wind power turbines have decreased significantly while increasing in their efficiency. It is reported that costs have decreased well over 60% since the 1980’s. Wind power has no hidden costs, and it has become more cost-effective with each new round of technological advancements. A: “Several years ago when I first looked into this, the cost was approximately $40,000- $70,000 for one residential wind turbine (70-100 ft tall) . The costs for these may have gone down. There are replacement costs associated with some maintenance. These wind turbines are much smaller and do not generate the same kind of controversy as the larger industrial wind turbines. Like the larger wind turbines, they do not generate power unless the wind is blowing and generally produce more power between October and April. Wind power hooked into a residence is generally stored in a battery for periods when the wind is not blowing. Care must be taken to ensure the batteries do not overheat. Home owners that have their wind turbines hooked up to batteries in their homes are “off-the grid”.

Some homeowners applied under the Micro_FIT program to have wind turbines that hook directly into the grid. They get paid 13.5cents per kw but then buy back their power from the grid (Ontario Hydro). The costs of the industrial wind turbines are approximately $2.5 million per turbine. These turbines are much larger – between 450 – 800 ft tall. They are NOT hooked into the farmer’s property. They are feeding directly into the grid. The farmer receives a payment from the wind company through the Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) program at 13.5 cents per kw based on how much power is generated. They do not get any power directly from the wind turbine and still have to pay their hydro bills.” Q: Wind is an excellent supplement to other renewable resources. For example, solar or hydro power. A: “Wind power may have a place as a renewable resource but the lack of community and municipal control over the size, the siting, the concerns with the adverse health affects, such as sleep deprivation, associated with the larger industrial wind turbines, the cost and lack of effectiveness of wind, the impact on the community and the by-passing of the environmental assessment process are big concerns. Smaller, personal wind turbines that feed directly into people’s homes and reduce their reliance and demand on the grid would be more beneficial.” First concession West of Bobcaygeon Go North on Cosh’s Rd. to 247 only 2 km on left

GREEN IS IN. BUT IT’S HOW WE GET THERE THAT COUNTS

by Sharon King, KPOW

We constantly hear concerns from waterfront property owners about the prolific weed growth in our waterways. If you travel by boat you can see for yourself how people prefer the look of green, wellmanicured lawns. Let’s consider that we achieve this look by using chemical (synthetic) fertilizers as

opposed to organic fertilizers. Chemical fertilizers contain vast amounts of petroleum. They are also filled with nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. That makes up about 30% of the bag. There are health risks associated with the use of these types of fertilizers. We have all seen the warning signs placed on lawns after professional applications have been performed. They are fast- acting, however the majority is washed away into our waterways or into the groundwater. Very little is absorbed into the soil. What is absorbed creates green lawns in a short period of time. However, this can create lush top growth while the roots struggle to keep up. When over applied, chemical fertilizers can cause the roots to burn or create toxic salt concentrations. Repeated use of these types of fertilizers can cause the soil to become compacted and less capable of holding water and nutrients. Because they contain concentrations of mineral salts they can kill organisms responsible for decomposition and soil formation. In contrast, organic fertilizers are made from plant and animal sources or rock powders. These are slower acting because they need to be broken down by soil microbes. They provide long- term, steady nutrition, while helping to build soil structure. They help the soil remain loose and better able to absorb water. You also need less of this type of fertilizer. One way to slow weed growth in our waterways is to stop feeding them with fertilizer runoff. If you live in an urban area you are not off the hook. Chemical fertilizers end up in the groundwater or sewers, which eventually end up in our waterways. Please let nature take its course and stop using chemical fertilizers. you’ve always dreamed about driving or something that just “floats your boat”. These things can seem very important to us, but what I have found, is that they should not be at the expense of improving and protecting your family’s financial well-being. Making small changes to your spending repeatedly over time can have a powerful affect on your family’s financial well-being. IMAGINE if you were to begin by taking 1% of your earnings ($10 for $1,000 income – $25 for $2,500 income – and so on) for each of the next one to three months and put it into your TFSA (tax free savings account) or your retirement investment account. Then, for the next month or two you put 2% of your earnings there, and so on and so on. Within two years, if you were disciplined and continued doing this monthly, you could be savings upwards of 8-10% of your income and moving towards YOUR goals. It can be this simple for you. The key is to use the advise of a financial professional and get started when you might wonder, the answer is today! If saving if one of your strengths – well done and congratulations!

your energetic hands on the reins – because you are your business. You’re a professional – a dentist, for example – and you get hit with a sudden, extended illness. Your entire practice will stop – but salaries, operating costs and other fixed expenses won’t. How will you continue to pay employees until you’re back in the game? You’re not only the owner of your small business; you’re also the primary salesperson, accountant and everything else. What if you’re in a car accident that leaves you injured and unable to work for an extended period. Your entire business will stop running. But, the bills will continue to accumulate, and the income that supported your family will temporarily disappear. Do you have a contingency plan in place?

There’s no need to gamble with your future financial health when you can take some essential steps right now to protect what you’ve built. It’s called business continuation planning and it’s the process of identifying issues that could put your business at risk and adopting strategies to help mitigate or eliminate those risks. Roots & Ramblings by John Bick, Bobcaygeon & District Horticultural Society

The Greening of Bobcaygeon

Have you planted a tree this spring? This is the ideal time to do it. Trees and shrubs are a great way to grace our landscape. They also provide wind protection, shade, food for wildlife and most importantly, the oxygen we breathe. The Victoria Stewardship Council is once again selling batches of low-cost seedlings. There may be some left at the Kawartha Conservation Office at 705–328-2271. Have you participated in a roadside cleanup in your area this year? Many folks in our municipality, either individually or collectively, remove the trash left in their neighbourhoods by others. This keeps the area attractive and protects birds and animals from broken glass and toxic elements. Diligent gardeners set an example by keeping their yards and properties not only pleasing to the senses but also safe for other life forms. The Bobcaygeon

& Ella’s Kaleidoscope

Horticultural Society applauds the efforts of citizens and businesses who do likewise. Volunteers from The Kawartha Field Naturalists will be out in full force on Monday, April 23 doing their semi-annual cleanup along Highway 45 where it fronts the Altberg Wildlife Reserve between Kinmount and Norland. They can always use extra help. Have you stopped using plastic water bottles? When Maud Barlow from the Council of Canadians first talked to concerned citizens of Bobcaygeon a number of years ago, she urged us to ban the use of these non-essential, polluting containers. Unlike many parts of the world, our tap water is perfectly safe to drink. Our plants, on the other hand, prefer rain water. Collecting it in a rain barrel is an old idea that continues to have real merit for both outside and inside plants. Some people save leftover cooking water and claim that their houseplants thrive on it. Better than pouring it down the drain. Have you considered growing some of your own food this year? Not everyone has a hectare of land upon which they can have long rows of corn, large plots of potatoes or plentiful patches of raspberries. Consider planting vegetables such

as swiss chard, kale and colourful salad greens amongst your flowers. Their interesting textures and hues will enhance the flower beds and provide you with a convenient, raw food snack while you are out there weeding or deadheading. Many people plant tomatoes, peppers and squash plants in containers on their balconies or trellises on their patios. This takes very little space, enables you to keep a close eye on pests, and adds interest to the surroundings where you relax. If none of these methods are available to you, sign up for one of the 10 allotments created by the Community Gardens subcommittee of Environmental Action Bobcaygeon. There are six at Kawartha Settlers’ Village and four behind Trinity United Church on William Street. Call Monica at 738-6218 to book one for this year. If your thumb is not as green as you would like, please support your local Farmers’ Market. The one in Bobcaygeon at the arena parking lot is open on Saturday mornings from late May until October. The produce and items come from within 100 kilometres. They are usually grown organically, reared humanely, prepared safely and produced locally. And none of them is transported in long distant, high energy-consuming containers from abroad. The Bobcaygeon Horticultural Society has always been a “green machine”. The public gardens which its volunteers plant and maintain throughout the village are never subjected to pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Only good oldfashioned animal manure or compost is applied. All cultivating, weeding, pruning and planting is done by hand. We teach the students at the Children’s Garden at Settlers’ Village that what was good enough for our foreparents should and must be good enough for us. Finally, Earth Day which was first celebrated in 1970, is upon us again. This year the Bobcaygeon organizing committee has planned a very interesting

afternoon on Sunday, April 23 from 1 to 5 p.m. It will be held at Kawartha Settlers’ Village on Dunn Street. All the environmental groups will be there. There will be demonstrations, information booths and entertainment. Bring a child if you can. The youngsters in our families are the ones who need to know how to keep the planet healthy. Global summits, government programs, and protection agencies are all essential but grassroots groups such as those mentioned in this article help us, as individuals, to make it happen. Happy Earth Day.

GREEN WITH ENVY The other man’s grass is always greener. By David Sparkes Probably because he uses more chemicals, despite health concerns which were enough to spur Ontario to ban the use of pesticides for cosmetic purposes on Earth Day 2009. When that legislation was coming into effect we heard stories of people stockpiling weed killers and planning to purchase them outside the province. And that just about sums it up when it comes to being green. It’s okay, as long as it doesn’t deprive or inconvenience anyone too much. I have to admit I was slow and somewhat reluctant to get on board the green train, probably for the same selfish reasons as many others. I am far from being an eco warrior but do my little bit by filling the recycling bins, composting, using a rain barrel and by buying organic fruit and veggies, saving on water and energy, and so on. But, to be perfectly frank, a lot of this is motivated by self interest. Our car is more fuel efficient than the SUV we used to drive, however the main reason for the switch was to counter the ever- increasing cost of gas. We have made progress, but there’s a very long way to go.

We are motivated by self interest just like the large corporations and governments. Remember Kyoto? Or maybe it’s easier just to forget it? Remember when Obama derailed plans for the Keystone pipeline, ostensibly for environmental reasons but more directly connected to his desire to be re-elected. Our fearless leader, Stompin` Steve Harper, is busy selling our tar sands oil and other resources to China. After all, we will need every cent –whoops, I guess now we must say every nickel- to pay those tens of billions of dollars for fighter jets. Imagine what sort of environmental changes we could bring about if we could stop the spending on wars and weapons of warfare. By the way, I hear the Americans have a plan to counter global warming: by switching from Fahrenheit to Celsius - they can dramatically lower the temperature. I’m afraid it’s too late for us to do that but it just goes to show! When it comes to looking after the planet we are doing a very poor job of stewardship. We continue to buy those little plastic bottles of water even though we know the bottles are an environmental hazard and we are paying more for the water than for gasoline. How do you figure that one out? It is really quite depressing when you start to think about these issues, which probably explains why many of us simply avoid doing so. Meanwhile the multinational corporate giants colour their packaging green and use eco-friendly names in an effort to give us a warm feeling when we buy their products; all the time motivated strictly by profit and that alone. What a world we live in! So, my advice is this. When surveying the other person’s super smooth green lawn and comparing it to your dandelion patch, take some small satisfaction in feeling you are at least doing the environmentally correct thing. Whatever you do, don’t be green with envy! Think of My Favourite Things first for your giftware, home décor & garden needs… visit us at 10 King St E. Bobcaygeon, 738-9090

GOLF PRO MIKE GASCHO OFFERS SOME EXPERT ADVICE TO HELP IMPROVE YOUR GAME Whether you’re an avid golfer or just starting out, Mike Gascho, golf pro at Eganridge Inn and Spa in Fenelon Falls suggests early Spring is an ideal time to make changes to your swing, practice on your short game, and review fundamentals of the game. GRIP: Your grip is fundamental because it’s the only link to the golf club. The correct grip and pressure allow you to square face at impact, and increase feel and control of the club throughout your swing. The most common mistake is to hold the club too tightly because it increases tension in the arms and upper body. STANCE: The stance is the foundation of your swing. It’s important to have your weight equally distributed left to right and front to back. Try to focus on getting your weight on the balls of your feet. POSTURE: It is important to have good posture to get the maximum impact out of your swing. More importantly, correct posture will allow you to make an efficient swing and get to a balanced finish position. Slightly bend knees and hips to bring shoulders forward. Try to maintain spine angle and avoid rounding your back.

BALL POSITION: When putting and driving it is important to strike the golf ball as the club has reached the apex of the swing, and on the way back up, essentially closer to your lead foot. When using irons and hybrids it is important to strike the golf ball before the ground to promote solid contact. Essentially, this means the golf ball will be struck somewhere off centre on the side of the lead foot. ALIGNMENT: Correct alignment will allow you to deliver the club along the correct path through to impact. It is important to be aligned parallel left of your target. It is important that your feet, knees, hips, elbows, shoulders and eyes, are all aligned. Once you’ve got a basic understanding of the fundamentals of golf, it is best to adapt them to your pre- shot routine, ensuring that each is in place to allow for consistent setup and furthermore, a consistent swing. A pre shot routine will help to visualize the shot and increase comfortability. At Eganridge we offer golfers a chance to golf during the Tuesday Mens Night at 5 p.m. starting the first of May. The cost to play 9 holes is $12 , and power carts are $10 Thursday is Ladies Night at 5 p.m. starting May 3. We know it’s easier said than done, but … you’ve got to accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative and don’t mess with Mr. In-Between! Gemini (May 22 to June 22) It’s been a long while since last we saw the flowers blooming, but the May blossoms are finally here – and everything else you’ve been waiting for, Gemini. Get out and enjoy that glorious Kawartha sunshine, and you’ll feel like a brand new person! Cancer (June 23 to July 23) Dear Cancer, get ready ‘cuz it’s time to take a walk on the wild side! Don’t wait for the full moon – a new moon is also the perfect time and space to try something new. Experiment, venture out of that comfort zone – it will definitely be worth your while.

by Melodie Mc Cullough Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) Food, glorious food! Dear Leo, we sense you’re becoming something of a “foodie”, and good for you! We say why not? So try those new recipes, share them with friends, get into that new restaurant and check it out. Your taste buds will thank you over and over. Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) Peace and contentment are yours for the taking during this phase, Virgo. Enjoy some quiet moments, by yourself, or with loved ones. Breathe deeply, smell the roses and love freely. Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) There will be events happening during this phase beyond your control. Don’t complicate matters, Libra. Don’t fight the natural ebb and flow. Just sit back and let things pass – they will take care of themselves. Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) Your social media messages take on a whole new meaning at this time, Scorpio. Read between the lines! Someone is very interested in you and your life. Respond! Respond! Now is the time to LOL!

Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) In Greek mythology, Pandora opened her box and many evils escaped. But, Sagittarius, you must remember that hope remained. There will always be hope, perhaps hard-to-find at certain times, while prominent at other times. Do not despair because hope will endure. Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) We know the pettiness of the world can make you angry, Capricorn. You must rise above this! You must smile when you don’t want to and laugh when you want to cry. A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle. Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) Are you a lover of music, dear Aquarius? The stars say it will play an important role in your life around about now. Whether classical, country, rock – whatever you like – there are many opportunities to enjoy music right here in the Kawarthas. And you never know what new rhythms are waiting for you to discover, in music or in life! Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) You can expect a pleasant surprise on your doorstep soon, Pisces. Be prepared, though, because it may bring changes you’re not anticipating. As always, you can handle this! Enjoy this little bit of sunshine while it lasts!

GROWING A GREATER GOOD AT GREENSHIRE ECO FARMS Greenshire Eco Farms was founded in 2009, and during that time they’ve provided two seasons of their ‘Field to Plate’ CSA food box program, founded their Healing Horse Centre, and for the up-coming season are offering programs that are both fun and educational for the entire family. A permaculture farm, they are located at 1563 Pigeon Lake Road., halfway between Lindsay and Bobcaygeon. Dedicated to “Growing a Greater Good”, Greenshire’s CSA Program offers a choice of market produce (some heritage varieties) including garlic, mushrooms and wild edibles. Participants in the CSA program receive a weekly newsletter with farm news, list of available produce, recipes, and nutritional values to which you respond with your order. A traditional CSA of half or full share is an option. Orders can be picked up at the farm or at locations in Lindsay, Omemee, Peterborough or Blackstock. See www.greenshireecofarms.com or phone 705-879-4207 for more information. If you’re interested in finding out more about permaculture gardens: no-till raised beds, mandala gardens, Hugelkultur mounds, hay/straw bale instant gardens, newly planted ‘Food Forests’ – all demonstrating an environmentally responsible approach to farming that goes beyond organic, producing eco-friendly grown fruits and veggies that are nutritious, high energy food for the body and mind, then you may wish to attend “Introduction to Permaculture” workshop being presented by Travis Philp, gardens manager at Greenshire. Travis won an Innovation Award in 2011 from Carrot

WAY OF LIFE THREATENED BY PROPOSED QUARRY AND CONCRETE PLANT By Carol Lawless Except for the sound of cattle lowing and the occasional dog barking, Quarry Road is silent. The woods haven’t begun to green, yet

there are already tiny yellow flowers dotting the edges of the road that runs off Highway 36. Three days earlier, hundreds of citizens gathered at the Galway-Cavendish and Harvey Township office

to protest the development of what is being deemed a “mega -quarry” and concrete mix plant on Ledge Road in Harvey Township.“It’s our way of life that’s being threatened,” says Steve Johnson. “I’ve lived on Quarry road for 45 years,” he says pointing to the wide open fields, forest and sky. Johnson is one of several residents hoping their protests will impact the decision to rezone what is now a “rural” area. “My boys are in the woods all of the time. They run through them and bike. thought of massive trucks constantly running up and down these roads makes me heartsick,” Johnson says shaking his head. “The life we have worked so hard to preserve and protect will change drastically if the quarry is allowed to be built.” Citing concerns ranging from noise pollution to water consumption for the manufacturing of concrete, Quarry Road resident Becki Jory says it’s very important people understand the impact the development will have on wildlife. “This region is home to the largest deer yard in Ontario,” Jori explains. She and her husband Ryan spent three years building their dream home on Quarry Road. “There’s also a fish sanctuary. “We’re concerned about the increased traffic on Quarry and Ledge Road leading to and from Highway 36,” she says. “It has been explained to us that a truck will run down the road every six minutes. Not to mention the blasting. We chose to build our home here because we wanted to be away from noise and pollution.” According to Paul Ritchie, owner of the proposed quarry and concrete plant, all of the plans for the development have been in the works for nearly three years. Ritchie owns and operates Dewdney Mountain Farms Ltd. “Everything has been done according to the regulations cited by the Ministry of Natural Resources,” Ritchie explains. “There seems to be a lot of misinformation relating to the quarry running in its initial stages and when it’s at full capacity – possibly 10 years from now,” Ritchie says. Addressing the concerns of blasting, Ritchie explains his company will perform only low-impact explosion. “We will not and have not done anything that we have not been authorized or permitted to do,” he says. All About Your Health GIVE IT UP!

15 Things to let go of to help you find true happiness Here is a list of 15 things which, if you give up on them, may make your life a lot easier and much happier. We often hold on to things that cause us a great deal of pain, stress and suffering.

Instead of letting them go, we cling to them. Why not let go of the things that no longer serve us, and embrace change. Give up your need to always be right. There are so many of us who can’t stand the idea of being wrong wanting to always be right even at the risk of ending great relationships or causing a great deal of stress and pain for us and for others. Whenever you feel

the urgent need to jump into a fight over who is right and who is wrong, ask yourself this question: would I rather be right, or would I rather be kind? - Wayne Dyer. What difference will that make? Is your ego really that big? Give up your need for control. Be willing to give up your need to always control everything that happens to you and around you’re situations, events, people, etc. Whether they are loved ones, coworkers, or just strangers you meet on the street ñ just allow them to be. Allow everything and everyone to be just as they are and you will see how much better that will make you feel. By letting it go it all gets done. The world is won by those who let it go. - Lao Tzu Give up on blame. Give up on your need to blame others for what you have or don’t have, for what you feel or don’t feel. Stop giving your power away and start taking responsibility for your life.

Give up your self-defeating self-talk. How many people are hurting themselves because of their negative, polluted and repetitive self-defeating mind set? Don’t believe everything that your mind is telling you ñ especially if it’s negative and self-defeating. You are better than that. The mind is a superb instrument if used rightly. Used wrongly, however, it becomes very destructive. - Eckhart Tolle Give up your limiting beliefs about what you can or cannot do, about what is possible or impossible. From now on, you are no longer going to allow your limiting beliefs to keep you stuck in the wrong place. Spread your wings and fly! A belief is not an idea held by the mind, it is an idea that holds the mind. - Elly Roselle Give up complaining. Give up your constant need to complain

about those many things people, situations, events that make you unhappy, sad and depressed. Nobody can make you unhappy, no situation can make you sad or miserable unless you allow it to. It’s not the situation that triggers those feelings in you, but how you choose to look at it. Never underestimate the power of positive thinking. Give up the luxury of criticism. Give up your need to criticize things, events or people that are different than you. We are all different, yet we are all the same. We all want to be happy, we all want to love and be loved and we all want to be understood. We all want something, and something is wished by us all. Give up your need to impress others. Stop trying so hard to be something that you’re not just to make others like you. It doesn’t work this way. The moment you stop trying so hard to be something that you’re not, the moment you take of all your masks, the moment you accept and embrace the real you, you will find people will be drawn to you, effortlessly. Give up your resistance to change. Change is good. Change will help you move from A to B. Change will help you make improvements in your life and also the lives of those around you. Follow your bliss, embrace change don’t resist it. Give up labels. Stop labeling those things, people or events that you don’t understand as being weird or different and try opening your mind, little by little. Minds only work when open. The highest form of ignorance is when you reject something you don’t know anything about. - Wayne Dyer

Give up on your fears. Fear is just an illusion, it doesn’t exist you created it. It’s all in your mind. Correct the inside and the outside will fall into place. The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself. - Franklin D. Roosevelt Give up your excuses. Send them packing and tell them they’re fired. You no longer need them. A lot of times we limit ourselves because of the many excuses we use. Instead of growing and working on improving ourselves and our lives, we get stuck, lying to ourselves, using all kind of excuses excuses that 99.9% of the time are not even real. Give up the past. It’s hard, especially when the past looks so much better than the present and the future looks so frightening. But you have to take into consideration the fact that the present moment is all you have and all you will ever have. The past you are now longing for the past that you are now dreaming about was ignored by you when it was present. Stop deluding yourself. Be present in everything you do and enjoy life. After all life is a journey not a destination. Have a clear vision for the future, prepare yourself, but always be present in the now. Give up attachment. The moment you detach yourself from all things, (and that doesn’t mean you give up your love for them because love and attachment have nothing to do with one another)

you become so peaceful, so tolerant, so kind, and so serene. You will get to a place where you will be able to understand all things without even trying. Give up living your life to other peoples expectations. Way too many people are living a life that is not theirs to live. They ignore their inner voice, that inner calling. They are so busy with pleasing everybody, with living up to other peoples expectations, that they lose control over their lives. They forget what makes them happy, what they want, and what they need. Eventually, they forget about themselves.† You have one life this one right now you must live it, own it, and especially don’t let other peoples opinions distract you from your path.

HARNESSING HONEY’S HEALING POWER

by Muriel Grant, DC, ND, TOTAL LIFE CARE We often think of honey as a pleasant sweet spread for our toast, but did you know the products from the beehive also possess healing power? Other major components of the hive are pollen, royal jelly and propolis. “Pollen is so complete that the time is not yet in sight when we will have a precise analysis of it.” This, according to the author of “The Healing Power of Pollen” Maurice Hanssen. Some vitamins found in pollen include Vitamins A & E, B1 (thiamine), Choline, Vitamin C, Vitamin K and Rutin. The minerals identified are; Potassium, Sodium, Magnesium, Calcium, Iron, Copper, Zinc, Manganese, Silica, Phosphorus, Chlorine and Sulphur There are 13 enzymes in honey that we know of as well. Amino acids are also found in pollen; these are the muscle builders of our bodies as they are the constituents of protein. This makes honey an ideal product for consumption by athletes. Propolis is found in honey and it’s considered a major non-toxic, anti-infective agent with antibiotic properties and fungicide. “Propolis, a sweet smelling resin used by the bees as a sealing compound will soon be thought of as a major medical breakthrough perhaps even as important as penicillin.” This, according to Paul Urban a researcher of Melbrosin, along with Russian researchers. Another important product from the hive is Royal Jelly. It acts as a major immune booster, with anti aging and memory repairing properties. Royal Jelly and Bee Pollen are sometimes referred to as a “miracle combination”. Because these products are powerful in their ability as immune boosters, researchers tell us that there are few health problems that cannot be helped by using products from the hive. Only pure, natural, unpasteurized honey is recommended.

LACE UP AND HELP CHANGE LIVES OF THOSE LIVING WITH MS Over 25,000 Ontarians will lace up for someone they love at the MS Walk on April 22 to change lives for the better in their own communities. The MS Walk, the MS Society of Canada’s largest fundraising event, is a family-oriented, communitysupported event that raises funds to support the MS Society’s mission of being a leader in finding a cure for multiple sclerosis and enabling people affected by MS to enhance their quality of life. “It’s really wonderful to go to the MS Walk and see people I’ve seen year after year and see new faces excited and passionate about doing what they can to help raise funds,” says Michelle Amerie, Honourary Chair of the Toronto MS Walk who lives with MS. “There have been years when it’s pouring rain - it

doesn’t matter; thousands of people are there with their umbrellas, ready to go! It’s amazing to see the commitment of so many people and to feel that I’m just as much a part of their family as they are a part of mine.” Taking place in 58 communities across Ontario, the MS Walk is unique in the world of spring fundraisers as each event features the option of a wheelchair accessible route - an important consideration especially for individuals who have multiple sclerosis. In 2011 alone, the MS Walk in Ontario garnered $5.5 million in pledges in support of the MS Society’s mission. The MS Walk funds valuable community programs and innovative research. In December 2011, the MS Society announced a $3.8 million grant towards a study led by Dr. Peter Stys from the University of Calgary’s Hotchkiss Brain Institute, which is investigating the complex interplay between degeneration and inflammation in MS. This research may have special relevance for those with progressive forms of MS. For more information or to register for the MS Walk, the public may visit mswalks.ca or call 1-888822-8467. For more news from the MS Society visit mssociety.ca. Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord that affects between 55,000 and 75,000 Canadians. It is the most common neurological disease of young adults in Canada and three Canadians are diagnosed with the illness every day. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 40, and the unpredictable effects of MS last for the rest of their lives. The MS Walk is a family-oriented, communitysupported event involving over 60,000 participants and volunteers in more than 160 communities across Canada. Each event location has routes of varying length and at least one route that is wheelchair accessible. For more information about the MS Walk visit mswalks.ca.
