Paper Cuts Corners

Here’s what I was thinking on one of my recent walks: You can cut grass, cut hair, cut up, cut down, cut back, cut it out, cut loose, cut to the chase… You can also cut corners. There’s one on my route and it shows wear where other people constantly cut across what used to be grass. Figuratively, one should never cut corners if there’s a risk the end result will be compromised in any way. Corner cutters never know what the true outcome might have been, nor ever realize the extent of their potential. Of course, you’ll also never know to what extent a compromised outcome could affect the people around you and that’s just not fair. The Little Prince (French: Le Petit Prince, 1943) is the most recognized work of French writer, poet and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It is also the book I treasure more than any other. The copy I keep close at hand is the one I gave to my daughter when she was three years of age. I began reading it to her then, even though she was too young to grasp the details. I will return it to her sometime, since this one is a sentimental keeper (and her name, not mine, is inscribed on the inside cover.) Over the years, I’ve discovered something within every reading of The Little Prince – be it a paragraph, a chapter, or the entire

book – a different insight, deeper meaning, greater clarity, and another reminder of human nature and behaviour. The fable illustrates an uncomplicated viewpoint on life, and an inspiring perspective on death. The observations about the cycle of life, one’s values and integrity, and everything inbetween are all so simple, yet so profound. One couldn’t go wrong by embracing the philosophy. Britain’s newest real-life prince is His Royal Highness Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge. Georgie, for short. I hope he’ll grow up with the sensibility of the beloved fictitious character because, among many other things, it means he’ll comprehend the delicate balance between – and unquestionable value of – perspective, priorities and relationships. I doubt if wee Prince George will be encouraged to cut corners. That doesn’t seem to be an option for this particular family. Sure, he’ll always have people to do things for him, but that doesn’t mean he won’t know how to do the task, how to follow through. In turn, his lifelong duties and responsibilities will be enormous. What he does learn, and what he does achieve, will most certainly always be completed with pride and vision. “If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.”– Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince. Thanks to all of you who attended the AGM of the North Pigeon Lake Ratepayers’ Association on July 27th. For those who could not be there, here is a snap shot of what you missed. species and our culture should poor Township and County leadership prevail. Our membership report indicated that we crossed the 100 mark and that during the past 12 months we received a lot of “press” for our stand on planning in our area including traffic studies, quarry overload, and potentially a graphite mine. A concise history of the Trent Severn Waterway was presented and how its current management is being questioned and where the money is to come from to repair and enrich the infrastructure. The fairness of taxation of waterfront property was raised and is under advisement. Water testing was reviewed and the results were addressed. The water quality is stable but always under threat thus the need for continued vigilance. The NPLRA has been testing the water quality for decades and thanks are due to Tom McCarron and Francis Currer for their work. We had an update on municipal issues as well as the new dockage in Bobcaygeon. The quarry committee occupied a lot of people resources in the past year with success in gaining alliances with over 7 other like-minded ratepayer groups. The NPLRA will be having a public meeting on August 10th at 9:30 AM at the Bobcaygeon Service Centre to go into more detail. The NPLRA remains committed to seeing that our Township and Counties are more transparent in their planning activities and seeing that the operators of quarries pay their fair share of infrastructure costs. We do expect them to first act as good corporate citizens by respecting the residents. It was great to see that the Township of Trent Lakes is thinking of resurrecting a committee to look at all planning and quarry development issues. We have been “fighting” for just that in Trent Lakes Township for 13 months! After complimenting the NPLRA on the continuing contributions to water testing the Mayor

took the meeting in another direction accusing the quarry committee of not doing a good job and not knowing the facts, yet she did not point out where they were wrong. In addition she stated that she would be taking our (the citizens of Trent Lakes) concerns to the OMB. It was pointed out this was not really what she and the Township were doing. They are going to the OMB to defend their actions against the ten appeals filed by local citizens. She finally agreed that she stated wrongly what they would be doing at the OMB hearings. Lastly we had a short presentation by Kawartha Conservation on the Blue Canoe program and KC efforts to bring in lake management plans with Pigeon Lake now in year one of a three-year project. Sorry they did not have more time but if we have a COKL resident willing to host a Blue Canoe meeting they will be back. The new board of directors was elected. Shame on CKL

As you are well aware, I have persistently and patiently, for many years, been approaching yourself and the CKL roads department to address the deteriorating condition of the roadbed and surface of Sylvan Crt in Bobcaygeon, the street on which I have lived for 26 years. Over the years, a few “bandaid” repairs of filling potholes have been done, only to have the fillers disappear quickly into the chasms beneath the thin surface. I was stunned last year when CKL road crews filled, graded & resurfaced Lakewood Cr. and neglected to take the opportunity to do the same to Sylvan Crt., a small court running off of Lakewood. It would have made sense to do the job while the equipment was right in the immediate area. The request for repair has been on the local list for many years and I have been informed locally that

it is not scheduled for action until 2017 – this is not acceptable. The numerous deep potholes and surface indentations on Sylvan Crt. not only greatly decrease the property value of the six well maintained homes on the court, but more importantly, are a danger to those who dare to walk or ride on it! Young and old are at risk for falls and fractures, as are disabled residents such as myself. I use a walker for stability due to Parkinson’s disease and cannot venture beyond my driveway due to the uneven road surface. The risk of falling on Sylvan Crt. is extremely high. Yesterday a CKL road crew “repaired?” the top end of the court in an extremely sloppy and inadequate manner. As a property taxpayer of CKL (approx $9000.00 per year), I am extremely disappointed with the lack of results in repairing the complete roadbed and surface of Sylvan Crt. It is very upsetting to be informed that my property taxes have been assessed at $50,0000.00 per year for 4 years! This situation is not right and I expect some results in the near future. Thank you in advance for your consideration. I look forward to your response. Ken Gowland

City Hall

Rural Transit Update

As is the usual case, summer brings a lull in the Council activities and happenings at City Hall. During my daily meanderings around the City of Kawartha Lakes, I keep seeing the Rural Transit Van as it plies its trade within CKL. Wonder how they are doing? As you may remember they traverse the area, clockwise; Lindsay Transfer Hub (Kent and William Sts), Cameron, Fenelon Falls, Bobcaygeon, Dunsford and

Lindsay Transfer Hub. Counterclockwise; Lindsay Transfer Hub, Dunsford, Bobcaygeon, Fenelon Falls, Cameron, Lindsay Transfer Hub). Now that I have you totally confused I thought I had better experience the routing by actually travelling both ways to give a better sense of the service. The service started on June 24th, 2013 and is available 6 days per week and operates from 7am to 7pm. The cost is $5.00 per trip for Adults, Seniors, Students and Children. Children under 5 are free. There are two buses and they

both start at 7am in Lindsay, one going one way and one the other way. The Vans are air-conditioned and can accommodate all passengers including those with disabilities including wheelchairs. On Monday July 15th I accessed the Van in Bobcaygeon at 9:45am planning to take the Counter Clock-wise Route. Not wanting to miss it, I arrived 15 minutes early. The scheduled pick-up spot is in front of the “Bubbles and Gems” store on Bolton Street. There is a sign on a post identifying the space for pickup. The Van arrived in good time with one passenger disembarking. I boarded the Van and settled in. The vehicle was clean and quite roomy with comfortable seating. The driver was Carol, a very pleasant person and I explained my objective and she welcomed my interest. Carol mentioned that on her first trip that morning she had a young couple going from Lindsay to Bobcaygeon with one of them visiting family and the other one going to work. I asked her how things were doing so far and she said that during the previous week they had 60+ passengers and that if I wanted more specific information I should call management. Now that makes sense, I thought. We left on time heading for Fenelon Falls on Hwy 8 where we stopped across the road from the Cow and Sow Eatery. As Carol explained, there are times when she has to park a little before the usual spot due to parked cars because at the moment the pickup spot is not reserved for the Van. We waited for a few minutes and no one joined us. We then left at 10:10 on our way to Cameron. The stop in Cameron is at the Cameron Community Church. We departed Cameron at 10:30 arriving at the Lindsay Transfer Hub at 10:45. Still I was the only passenger. Not having anything pressing to do in Lindsay, I decided to carry on with Carol on our way to Dunsford. The designated stop in Dunsford is Mum’s Mini Mart. Still I am the only passenger. We left Dunsford on our way

Art lovers will want to mark the weekend of August 16 to 18 on their calendars. The Buckhorn Fine Arts Festival will return to the Buckhorn Community Centre for its 36th year. Festival director Sally Yardley said this year’s event will feature 86 professional artists, covering a wide variety of mediums from glass and stone cutters, sculptors, painters and sketch artists. The weekend kicks off with a garden party on the preview evening, Friday, Aug. 16 from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets for the party are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Purchasing of these tickets allows access to the festival for the rest of the weekend. Single day tickets, priced at $7, will be available on Saturday, Aug. 17 and Sunday, Aug. 18. A highlight of this year’s event will be the creation of the community mural. Led by the festival’s creative team, the inaugural section, titled “Above the Lake” by artist John Lennard will be featured as a community mural project. Yardley said visitors to the festival will not only be able to watch artists work on the mural but also add their own paintbrushes to it. - Brenda-PRINT.pdf Also PromoterAd-Aug featured at 1the festival will be1 the13-08-01 art competition featuring four classes (teenage, novice,

Horoscopes

August 9 to 22, 2013

Aries (March 21 to April 20) “Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.”: Dalai Lama. Wise words, indeed. Aries – there is always room for kindness in your day-to-day life. And when someone shows you kindness, remember to acknowledge it, as well. Taurus (April 21 to May 21) There is no place for envy and jealousy in a well-ordered life, Taurus. Rein in those feelings. Be grateful for what you have. You and your neighbour may grow different flowers – but each one’s garden is as plentiful and beautiful as the other. Gemini (May 22 to June 22) In Greek mythology Gemini represents the twin brothers, Castor and Pollux, sons of Leda. Born of different fathers, Pollux was immortal but Castor was a mere mortal. When Castor died, Pollux asked Zeus to share his own immortality so they could always be together -- and they were transformed into the Gemini constellation we see today. But what does this mean for you today, dear Gemini? We suggest you follow the path of Pollux – maintain the ties that bind and stay close to those you love. Cancer (June 23 to July 23) As a water sign, Cancer, you are said to be emotionally reserved, intense, imaginative and creative, ruled by the Moon, and associated with the astrological fourth house. Your intensity finds its release through creativity rather than in extroverted social ways. Keep using that great imagination! It is extremely useful, in more ways than one. Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) During your phase, Leo, the full moon rises Aug. 20. Known by numerous names – Grain Moon, Sturgeon Moon, Thimbleberry Moon – it represents to the Canadian aboriginal people an honouring of the thimbleberry plant which produces an abundance of fruit once every three

years. It reminds us that not all is accomplished at once. So take your time, Leo, and let your world unfold slowly but surely. Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) Looking for a relaxing evening out with the kids? You don’t have to go far. The free concerts in the park (Aug. 15) at the gazebo at Lock 32 in Bobcaygeon offer family entertainment. We suggest you take a load off your back, Virgo, and enjoy some time with the folks. Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) Self-acceptance isn’t always easy. It means accepting who you are and where you are in your life right now, and knowing and believing it to be the right place. Make a list of all your strong qualities and all the things that make you happy – and accept the negatives along with the positives. (A woman named Betty may have some influence on your life during this phase.) Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) We all know summer can be a time of spending – spending money, that is. Try not to go overboard. Just budget and don’t let yourself wander off course. Enjoy the little things in life that don’t cost a fortune! Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) New doors are opening for you, dear Sag. Be brave right from the start! You cannot go wrong. If things don’t work out (and the chances are slim) there are always other doors waiting for your hand on the knob, and other bridges for your feet to cross. Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) Love can be a triumph, a trial – and sometimes even a bore! We urge you to put new life into your love life. Dare to be different! Hang over that cliff! Spice it up! And saying “I love you” doesn’t hurt, either. Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) If you had to describe yourself in 25 words or less, what would you say, Aquarius? Do you know who you are? What you love and what you hate? Try out this exercise to discover just how much you know about yourself. (And then ask a friend to do the same about you!) Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) Pisces, here are your forbidden words for the next month: “can’t”, ”but”, “should”, ”always” and “never”. We don’t want to hear them coming from your lips! Substitute with affirmative words and thoughts. Stay strong.

Royal Tea

It won’t be the table d’hote of King Henry the Eighth – the newly-born Prince George-Alexander-Louis’ greatgreat-great-great, etc predecessor. After all, the fair ladies of Bobcaygeon and area don’t exactly consider haunches of roasted beef, roasted whole chickens and peacocks and the like as finger food and flagons of ale as suitable refreshment. But the cuisine will be royally adequate when they – and maybe some male consorts – come together to enjoy the Royal Tea and Baby Shower celebrating the birth of the son of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge William and Catherine (Kate) and the third-in-line heir to the throne and commemorating the 60th year of the reign of Queen Elizabeth the Second, his paternal-side great-grandmother. It will be a co-production of the Boyd Heritage Museum and the Bobcaygeon and Area Chamber of Commerce, whose director Patricia Daniels-Burry is preparing the vittles (from victuals, an archaic word meaning foods prepared and cooked for humans

and undoubtedly part of the royal vocabulary) for the 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., Friday, August 23rd event in the Bobcaygeon Library’s suitably-decorated Art Room. Although somewhat less exotic than your average royal feast, and a lot less expensive, the purchase-byAugust 19th $15.00 fee will entitle the guest to fancy sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, desserts and tea or coffee. Conversations with nattily-dressed ladies or properly-attired gentlemen attendees are optional. As well, ticket purchasers are requested to mark the royal birth with baby shower gifts, which will be donated to the Women’s Resource Centre, a Lindsay shelter for abused women and their children. Did You Know That Legally... It is legal for a Landlord to adopt a non-smoking policy for private rental units and the balconies. If you look at the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006, the Social Housing Reform Act, 2000, or any other Ontario legislation you will find that there is no law that prohibits a landlord from instituting a no-smoking policy. Landlords do have the right to impose additional obligations or restrictions on tenants beyond the standard lease agreement, as long as these requirements do not conflict with the Residential Tenancies Act, the Human Rights Code, or any other federal law. As such, Landlords have the right to protect their investment and designate all or part of a building as no-smoking, including individual units, balconies or the entire property. You should be aware that this

policy only applies to new tenants signing new lease agreements. According to Section 38 (1) of the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006, it provides: ‘If a tenancy agreement for a fixed term ends and has not been renewed or terminated, the landlord and tenant shall be deemed to have renewed it as a monthly tenancy agreement containing the same terms and conditions that are in the expired tenancy agreement and subject to any increases in rent charged in accordance with this Act.’ To explain further, landlords must ‘grandfather’ (exempt) existing tenants during the length of their tenancies, unless they consent to the new policy. For more questions regarding your rights as a landlord or tenant contact a licensed paralegal. Donna M. Wood, Wood Paralegal Law Office Bobcaygeon 705.738.9841

Health & Wellness 3 Common Myths About Botox Botox is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in Canada, yet despite being around for more than 22 years, there are still many common misconceptions surrounding its use. The 3 most common myths about Botox are: 1. Botox is dangerous. There is no doubt that Botox is a very powerful drug. However, when used in cosmetic treatments, the amount used is minuscule (20-50 units per treatment on average) and it is used only in the areas where active wrinkles are found. There is absolutely no effect in the body outside the area of treatments

NEW FAMILY DOCTOR FOR THE CITY OF KAWARTHA LAKES The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) and City of Kawartha Lakes Family Health Team (CKLFHT) are pleased to announce the recruitment of Dr. Kesang Pema. Dr. Pema will begin practice at the Fenelon Falls Medical Centre on Tuesday, September 3, 2013. “It has been a pleasure to work with Dr. Pema and her husband Chuan Chen, the CKLFHT, and Dr. Allin to facilitate this recruitment. The

2. Botox makes you look plastic This is another common myth perpetuated by tabloid publications which often feature celebrities that have gone too far. Most often these people have also had multiple other procedures as well, coupled with too much Botox. Botox is just like any other cosmetic treatment – when used tastefully and judiciously it gives you fantastic and natural results. 3. Botox and fillers is the same thing. This is one myth that I hear just about every day. Many people think Botox and fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane are the same thing, yet they are completely different. Botox is injected into overactive muscles that are causing wrinkling. The result is making the wrinkled area look relaxed and smooth. Fillers work to add volume underneath a wrinkle, making the wrinkle shallower. They work in entirely different ways to reduce wrinkles. Dr Peter Ursel has been treating the aging face for over 20 years. To book a consultation, please call 705 328 1747. For more information and videos go to www.doctorursel.com

continued recruitment of family doctors to the City of Kawartha Lakes means that the number of unattached patients, and those traveling long distances to see a family doctor, is being reduced and a significant number of citizens can now receive much needed primary health care services in their own community,” states Cindy Snider, the recruitment and retention coordinator for KLHCI. Dr. Pema received her medical degree from Lady Hardinge Medical College (India) and wrain-BOD-2_9x2_9.pdf 1 residency 13-07-29 3:07 PM completed her family medicine training at the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Pema,

Andrew Veale, President of KLHCI, states, “KLHCI would like to welcome Dr. Pema and Mr. Chen to the City of Kawartha Lakes and wishes them many years of satisfaction, both personally and professionally, within the community.” KLHCI is a non-profit, charitable organization whose mandate is to recruit and retain family doctors for the City of Kawartha Lakes. “We are very pleased Dr. Pema has agreed to join our team and would like to commend KLHCI for all their excellent work to recruit family doctors

Community Cares

Suzanne Collins, author of The Hunger Games, writes that “some secrets are too delicious not to share.” This isn't one of those. But, I'm going to share it anyway. I secretly love… dishcloths and tea towels. Yes, I'm serious. Now, not just any dishcloths. I have certain requirements. I want ones that are a loose basket weave, absorbent, wring out almost dry, keep their colour and resist stains and odours – especially odours! Not everybody feels the same way about dishcloths, and I respect that. Some like a good deal – a buck a dozen, so when a cloth gets stained and torn, they can simply throw it out and buy more. There is also an elite group that will only use dishcloths and tea towels made from fine Irish linen. Although more expensive in the beginning, these are meant to last a lifetime. In reality, the majority of people don't care at all about dishcloths and tea towels. They're just happy that when they open the drawer, there is at least one clean one left! I could rewrite this story substituting dishcloths with the ways we memorialize those who have died. Like fabrics, not one type of ceremony suits everyone. Each of us has different likes and dislikes. Some want the absolute minimum, while others want the whole nine yards. The good news is there is something for everybody. Glenn would be pleased to meet with you to create a funeral plan that reflects your desires and budget. Whether you have “buck a dozen” or fine Irish linen tastes, you can share your secret with us.

When it comes to health care in our society, sometimes it seems like for every step forward that is made, there is an equal setback that challenges any progress getting made. Such was the case recently when hundreds of local residents found themselves without a primary care physician (family doctor) after Dr. Reidy closed her practice at the Kinmount Health Centre. This community, like many others throughout Ontario, has struggled over the past few years with a shortage of family physicians, but recent great strides have been made to improve the situation. Community Care’s Community Health Centre is playing a role in that improvement, as the CHC is at its full complement of 2.5 full-time family physicians, plus a team of health care professionals who are able to take on new local clients who do not have a family doctor or nurse practitioner. Local residents currently without a family doctor or nurse practitioner may get an application for consideration to the CHC by contacting any Community Care office in the City of Kawartha Lakes (71 Bolton St. in Bobcaygeon, 70 Murray St. in Fenelon Falls). 705-731-7716 When oil is spilled in water it initially remains 1-800-461-0353 primarily on the surface. If you are able to respond 73 Bolton St. Bobcaygeon quickly, it is possible to collect the oil before it has an impact on the environment. The key is a rapid response. That’s why Glenn Murray of Murrenhil Corporation (Janetville) developed the ROC BarrierTM. Glenn used his invention to assist in the cleanup of the BP oil spill. Murrenhil has distributors around the world and their customers include cruise lines and oil companies. Murrenhil’s latest product development is the ROC Oil Cling Pad™. These cling pads contains dozen of perforated holes. When placed on a spill, the hydrocarbons travel across the pad and migrate inside the holes, trapping all the oil when removed from the water. The multi-layered (yet incredibly thin) polyethylene pads are oleophilic (oil attracting) and hydrophobic (water repelling). As an added bonus, the pads can be recycled and the oil can be reclaimed. Protect our environment; always carry ROC Oil Cling Pads – available from your marina We’re pleased to announce that we have joined the operator. Kawartha Cooks

Featuring Christopher Tuberdyke Now those adorable little herbs you bought and planted back in May have grown up, do you find yourself wondering what to do with them all? Are you blindly snipping parsley onto everything because you just have so much? Clearly a crash course in pesto is in order! Pesto, a blended sauce consisting of herbs, nuts, and cheese, is fast, requires no cooking, and is a great way to use up the abundance of fresh herbs that summer has to offer. It’s delicious on pasta, whisked into eggs, and topped on burgers and sandwiches. Traditionally, pesto is blended by hand in a mortar and pestle, but a food processor is a bit more convenient for this job. Keep it in the fridge for just shy of a week, or freeze it and thaw it for later use!
