Paper Cuts Grey Skies

Many years ago, summer holidays meant packing up the car, the kids, and the old army tent, and heading out on the five-hour drive to our favourite provincial campground. When – not if – it rained, we weren’t to touch the tent for fear of leaks. It was sleeping bags on air mattresses, all meals prepared over the campfire. Babysitters, shopping, electronics didn’t factor in. It was one annual camping trip or no vacation at all. We made it work. We made it fun. Residents of the Kawarthas see vacationers enjoying their precious chunks of time. We’re glad they choose to spend it in our part of the world. Sometimes I wonder where they came from, what they do in real life, what they’ve overcome or celebrated during the past year, what’s ahead of them in the year to come. You know the famous old question, “Do you want to be right or do you want to be happy?” The compulsion to be right is known as “black and white” thinking. Happiness is no more a permanent state than being right is. Therefore, grey

is the place to strive for, the place to live. Certainly, one must be willing to embrace grey as a beautiful colour with an unlimited number of depths, and possibilities. I’m still working on this phase of growth and development. When I was in high school, one of our friends had a problem with the truth. She seldom told it. The way we dealt with her was to take all she said with a grain of sand, as it were. She was very convincing – and possibly convinced – so those who did believe her, well, believed her. We don’t want to think people betray our trust. But that is a part of adjusting to life in the right/happy/ grey world. Many people will deceive us; most won’t. There’s the opportunity to strive for grey. From Soren Kierkegaard: “There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn’t true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true.” Happy camping, cottaging, boating, resorting, vacationing. There’s still half a summer to enjoy. When it’s very cloudy in the Kawarthas, it’s grey. And exquisite.

New Faces; Same Behaviour

From 2002–2006, I experienced great exasperation from the City’s Planning Department. Issues concerned construction of a new house on my neighbour’s property and how it affected my privacy. Devious tactics, blatant stupidity and a totally unequal use of discretionary authority were what I experienced. Documents pertaining to my neighbour’s new construction were denied me. Minutes of Committee meetings were deemed to be unimportant as to completeness and accuracy stated the Secretary. The Planning Director used his power of discretion when he deemed the neighbour’s house a 1-storey when, in fact, it was a 1½-storey under the City’s Official Plan. The local Building Inspector denied that there had ever been discussions and approvals given for my outdoor shower. He also mismeasured a water setback forcing me to go through a Minor Variance over a deck project for which I had been given a building permit. Now it is 2013; the issue is a roof for my arbour. This time it’s “chase the Complaint.” Three Planning officials admit to knowing of the complaint but deny knowing what it is about. Fun! And then it is back to denials by the Building

Inspector and what he had stipulated about the roof. As usual, however, there is the lure of the Minor Variance. I won’t take it. So nothing has changed; a Minor Variance in 2002 cost $600. Now it is $1800 and Keith Carr, the Coboconk Building Inspector predicts that soon the City will be charging for questions asked over the phone. In 2004, a Municipal lawyer told me that the City of Kawartha Lakes was “dishonest” and that Somerville Township was “corrupt.” I see no change. David Hersey Coboconk, ON

QUARRIES: 13 Months Later

The last 13 months have gone by rapidly and there have been moments of frustration and bewilderment. In June of 2012, a large contingent of taxpayers met in a public meeting to voice their displeasure with the proposed new quarry application named Dewdney Farms. From that meeting came a resolve to not just sit idle. The North Pigeon Lake Ratepayers Association (NPLRA) made delegations to both Township and County councils, voicing our concerns and asking our council for due diligence. The NPLRA has channeled the passion of its members into a cohesive force that will continue to seek good governance in our municipal chambers. Alliances have been formed with seven other associations and hundreds of individuals who all share in our values and our determination to protect our area from wanton development. No doubt quarries are coming but we want development done right and not at the cost of our lifestyle. At our Annual General Meeting on July 27 at the Bobcaygeon Lawn Bowling Club, 9:00 a.m., we will celebrate our area with a presentation of “The Land Between” to show how much is at stake. This is no time for timid reactions. We need to change the mindset of our Township leaders and convince them that dialogue and cooperation build a better community. All are welcome! Collision Reporting Centre Parking

Council approved an amendment to the Parking Bylaw in order to restrict parking on the south side of Peel Street from Victoria Avenue North to the entrance of the police building parking lot. This is to support parking required for drivers of vehicles who need to go to the Ontario Collision Reporting Centre. There are 21 CRCs in Ontario and are to be used for reporting minor collisions where there are no injuries or worse. Ward 10 Councillor Pat Dunn (a retired police officer) was adamantly opposed to the amendment. He felt that police officers should investigate all accidents. The amendment passed 13 in favour with 2 against the motion.

Assistance at the Pump for People with Disabilities

As we put fuel into our cars, most of us never give a thought about what we are doing, we just do it. But what about people with severe disabilities? Access to assistance at the fuel pumps has become an issue for the disabled drivers. With the phasing out of full service locations in favour of more and more selfservice stations, it can be a real problem. The Kawartha Lakes Accessibility Advisory Committee (Kawartha Lakes AAC) has been contacted by a member of the public, asking for their review and support. In response, Barbara Condie, Accessibility Coordinator, Kawartha Lakes AAC drafted a report presenting it to Council requesting that a letter be sent to Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Employment and to the Directorate of Ontario requesting that the Province of Ontario enforce Ontario Regulation 429107. Ontario Regulation 429107, Accessibility Standards for Customer Service, enacted under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act of 2005, informs all owners and operators of gasoline service centres in Ontario that to avoid penalty, accessible services for people with disabilities must

be available during their hours of operation. Personally I cannot think of one gasoline service station that has this type of assistance readily available. I wondered whether or not they have even heard of this regulation. So I decided to check out at least three self-serve stations in the CKL. My first stop seems to be always a busy place usually with only one person at the cash. During a momentary lull, I put the question to the attendant. I said, “If a person with a disability were to drive up to one of your pumps and request assistance, would there be any one available to assist him or her?” The attendant did not appear to understand. I phrased the question differently and still he did not appear to understand. I know him to be a caring and concerned person who always tries to give the best of Customer Service. While I was posing this question, a lady waiting to buy lottery tickets interjected and said, “People like these should not be driving in the first place!” I made the point to tell her that I had at one time a friend (Mike MacCallum) who was a quadriplegic and drove a modified van with great skill. Does he not deserve service? If this is a common thought, there is considerable educating to be done. The next two stations were no better. In one case while they said they were aware of the requirement (she said it was not a law) she has never had the occasion to respond to a request for assistance. She did note however, that once she saw another customer assist a person who did not or could not get out of their car. The third person said, “I can’t leave the cash, no matter what. Next!” I wish the Kawartha Lakes AAC the best of luck.

The Balsam Lake resident and NHL contributor since 1976 as a player and coach, hoisted Lord Stanley’s Mug with family and friends as part of his 24 hour celebration with the Stanley Cup. THOUGHTS FOR A SUMMER AFTERNOON

I don’t have a hammock. If I did I would be lying in it on this sweltering hot day. But I don’t and therefore I am not. There you have it, except that I am now going to regale you with some of the profound thoughts drifting through my mind. This will probably provide you with confirmation of your previous opinions about my columns. Never mind, here goes: When they eliminated the one cent coin they didn’t think about how complicated it would be to add the HST and then round the figure up or down if the purchaser wanted to pay in cash or leave it alone if it was being charged. If they had thought about it they surely would have found another way. I don’t really care one way or the other but it’s probably driving some administrator crazy somewhere in our country. Profound thought number two. What happened to cause teenagers to speak twice as fast as normal human beings? If you’re like me you

dread being asked a question by one of the young people serving behind the Tim Hortons’ counter. Asking them to repeat the question slowly makes one feel like a foreigner having difficulty with the language. It must be something to do with tweeting protocol. I have a theory that the torrential rain, experienced in various places of late, is brought on by all of the data that is being stored in “the cloud”. The weight of all that information and personal data must cause havoc in the upper atmosphere. A few thousand e-mails were seen drifting through the streets of Toronto after the last big rainstorm (or so I hear). When Prime Minister Harper makes statements he always uses the first person. It’s always “I” and never “we”; except when he needs to distance himself from mistakes, bad decisions and poor judgement. Then it quickly changes to “we” or “the Minister responsible”. And lately there’s been a lot of the latter. When you consider the enormous savings in publishing an e-book, compared to a hard cover or even a paperback, it seems amazing that the price would be so close. For example,a hardcover edition of one bestseller I checked was priced at $14.50 and the e-book sold for $12.99. Of course we now learn that the “big boys” got together and fixed prices but how can we all be so gullible? Ah summertime! I feel like The Walrus and that would make you The Carpenter, wouldn’t it? Think about it – in your hammock if you will.

Summer at Settlers’ Village

With the kids now out of school and summer in full swing, Kawartha Settlers’ Village is a bustling place. We just finished our first week of summer camp where children made soap, constructed bird houses, played games, and participated in a number of activities. We were pleased to host the Celebration of Life of the late Don Haines on July 12. A large gathering of family and friends heard tributes to Don, a loving father, partner, friend, avid curler and long-time volunteer at Settlers’ Village. Don helped with regular maintenance as well as all events. He will be missed. Finally, we are open daily from 10 am – 4 pm (10 am – 2 pm on Sundays); be sure to come and tour the 22 historical buildings, visit our goats, ducks, and chickens, and then cool off at the splash pad across the street in Tommy Anderson Park. to hear from shoreline property owners, lake users, and others within the Balsam, Cameron, Sturgeon, and Pigeon lake watersheds about what needs to be done to ensure lake health and usability. Lake management plans are currently being developed, and involve determining the best management practices for dealing with various issues such as excessive aquatic plants, contaminated runoff, development pressures, E.coli, sediments, invasive species, and others, as identified by a Community Advisory Panel, the community, and through scientific research. Each of the following plans is in a different stage of development, and will be completed and implemented in upcoming years. Everyone is invited to attend an open house to provide feedback that will help guide plan development: • Sturgeon Lake Management Plan (2014) - Review and provide comments on an early draft of the plan • Balsam & Cameron Lake Management Plan (2015) - Get an update and provide input on plan development • Pigeon Lake Management Plan (2016) - Identify the issues to be addressed in the plan, including impacts to lake health and your enjoyment of the lake. My dad died April 1st. Glenn’s sister died June 25th. Our grandson was admitted to the hospital twice in June, first with a very high temperature and then problems breathing. Sent home with puffers. Our daughter was admitted to the hospital in July. Sent home with pain medication, muscle relaxant and antibiotics. I fell, sprained my ankle and twisted my knee. Legs covered in humongous bruises. Didn’t go to the doctor because I was sure he’d tell me to ice and elevate it. Going to the doctor now. He’ll probably scold me for not coming sooner. Received an email from my niece containing a virus. Took a service person an entire week to fix. Haven’t paid that bill yet. Might leave town under the cover of darkness. Sent an email to my niece telling her to check her computer. Didn’t tell her the damage it caused us, though. After all, her mother just died. Computer problems, no matter how damaging, pale in comparison with death. Found out that Dad’s home in Nova Scotia, which now belongs to me, will probably have to be torn down because of fifty years of neglect and cheap fixes. What next? We have all heard, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” I’m so overloaded with lemons that I’ve moved on to lemon chiffon cake, lemon mousse, lemon bars, lemon cheesecake, panna cotta and lemon curd trifle. I think they might help a bit. Here’s wishing you a wonderful week, one with a significant lack of lemons!

We have had such a great week at Art camp, which ran from July 15 to 19 at the United Church in Bobcaygeon. July 18 was Artist Day, a new idea to help inspire kids to try out a specific form of art. We had 6 different workshops focusing on Graffiti Art, Sketching, Painting, Photography, and Jewelry Making. The artists, all local, volunteered their morning to work with and intentionally teach the youth ranging in age from 6-12. We definitely have some great talent hiding in our kids, just waiting for someone to help unlock their potential! A big thanks to our Artists Steve North, Caroline Vanhalteren, Lisa Vanhalteren, Leanne Martin, Karen Visser, and James Youells for giving us your valued time! Driftwood Theatre Presents The Odyssey

This summer, Driftwood Theatre takes you on the greatest journey of love, adventure and the search for home ever told: The Odyssey, adapted from Homer by Rick Chafe. The Bard’s Bus Tour voyages across Ontario on a new classic journey filled with suspense, adventure and excitement, with performances from July 11th to August 18th. Use a nozzle attachment on the vacuum to remove live adult bed bugs and immature bed bugs (called nymphs) and their eggs. Vacuum all crevices on your mattress, bed frame, baseboards and any objects close to the bed. It is essential to vacuum daily and empty the vacuum bag immediately or seal it and place it in the freezer for several days. Wash all your clothing, bed sheets, blankets, mattress pads, pillows and their cases in the hottest water possible and place them in a hot dryer for 30 minutes. Consider covering your pillows and mattress with a plastic cover. Remove all unnecessary clutter. Seal cracks and crevices between baseboards, on wood bed frames, floors and walls with caulking. Being active as a family strengthens not only everyone’s heart, lungs, bones and muscles, but also your relationships with one another. Families who play together talk, laugh, sing and enjoy. They develop mutual interests, cheer each other on and develop a teamwork mentality. And there’s more. Parents struggling to find time to be active and spend time with their children can combine the two – a great way to role model being active. Tips for getting active as a family 1. Set goals for physical activity together and schedule them in your calendar. Start small and make goals realistic. 2. Take turns choosing an activity for the whole family to do. Create a “Family Fitness File” to hold your ideas. Pick an activity each day or each week. 3. Try a new activity each season. Snowshoe, curl, go bird watching, hike, bowl or go camping. 4. Think “fit bits.” Get your heart beating faster, even for just 10 minutes at a time - play your favourite music and shake it up! 5. Try an active fundraiser. The Terry Fox Run and Run for the Cure are great ways to be active together while teaching children about helping

the community. 6. Find out where you can be active near home. Add a list of walking trails, recreation centres, bike paths, provincial parks, conservation authorities, pick-your-own farms and local parks to your “Family Fitness File.” 7. Join in community festivals. Read the paper and watch for flyers announcing special events such as SummerActive and Earth Day celebrations. 8. Leave the car at home. Walk, wheel or cycle for short trips or family outings. 9. Plan active vacations. Go on a camping trip or build some active days into your trip, such as a day at the beach or a golf lesson. 10. Turn off ALL screens - TVs, video games, computers, personal digital assistants - and go outside. We tend to be more active outdoors. 11. Walk, climb, run, throw, build, dance, toss, hit balls, kick balls, chase, hop, jump, roll, dig, shovel and get moving! Make it easy to be active anytime! These items are equipment and toys to keep around the house to promote physical activity: • badminton racquets • beanbags • table tennis paddles •p lastic bowling set or • baseball equipment bocce balls • skipping ropes • music for dancing • hula hoops • balls of all sizes • plastic pails • frisbees TIPS: Lightweight (usually plastic) equipment is inexpensive and safer for younger children. Keep everything organized in storage bins. Build in short activity breaks on days you are not active together. Don’t forget the benefits of a short activity break. There has been great interest shown by contestants who participated over the years bringing back many memories of past contests and contestants. On Friday, July 26 from 4 until 6 pm, we are holding a BBQ in the Beef Barn at the Bobcaygeon Arena Fair Grounds. Tickets are $10, available at 10 King My Favourite Things. Tickets include pulled pork on a bun, coleslaw, baked beans and lemon squares. The Contest begins at 6 pm on Friday. The Little Pie Shack from Fenelon Falls will cater the Contest. Saturday morning, the fiddlers and musicians will have an impromptu jam session at the corner of Bolton and King Streets before the Contest resumes. Saturday morning at 10 a.m. the Contest continues. This year we have a new class, the 15 and under Fiddle and Step Dance. This makes it easier for contestants because they do not have to compete against 18 year olds.

Success at the Summit

The 2013 Fresh Water Summit was a great success! The Friday night social on the wharf saw an increase from 105 guests to 292 guests. Wow! It was a fantastic night with live music by Loose Connections, awesome tasty treats generously donated by Kayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Place and graciously prepared by the Coboconk Legion. Saturday, too, was a wonderful day with many, many families enjoying free events in the Lions Park and the Strongman Competition in the Legion Park. New this year was the creation of a survey for visitors to complete. The great information from it will be used next year to make the event even better. Prizes for the survey winners were 1st prize: Trinity Taxi Limo anywhere in the City of Kawartha Lakes and to the Riverside Inn for dinner; the 2nd-prize was an overnight accommodation at the Saucy Willow Inn with Dinner at the Pattie House. Winners are Patti Ryall of Coboconk for Trinity Taxi/ Riverside prize and Liane Murillo of Uxbridge for Saucy Willow Inn and Pattie House prize. It takes many volunteers and an incredible amount of volunteer hours to pull off this event. Everyone who worked on this growing event should be proud of what they have done. and increase its use for all community members. The Coboconk and District Lions Club have embarked on a very ambitious plan to renovate the Lions Park in Coboconk. A new skateboard park has been installed and the beach area has been reclaimed with new sand added. In addition, a fountain has been added to improve water quality and geese deterrent lights installed as well. The OTF grant is supporting Phase Two of the project, set to begin in the month of July. The additional funding will help to install two new picnic shelters, improved access points and an entrance gate. In addition, a 300-seat amphitheater and stage for summer concerts will be installed in the park with the appropriate electrical requirements and a greatly improved landscaped environment for all to enjoy. How to Stay Safe In the Hot Weather Environment Canada has issued special weather statements for Kawartha Lakes. The extreme heat and humidity can be a serious concern for seniors, small children, outside workers and people with chronic medical conditions. “It’s important to take the necessary precautions so you are not overcome by the heat,” said Paramedic Chief Keith Kirkpatrick. “Please check on your family, friends and neighbours, especially those who are at greater risk of suffering from heatrelated illness.” Kawartha Lakes Paramedic Service offers the following tips: • Stay inside – cool buildings (air conditioning, fans etc.) • Drink water frequently (constantly sipping) • Wear light clothing • Do very little exercise • Check on the elderly, small children and the infirmed For construction and other outside workers: • Drink when you are thirsty. • Keep taking rest breaks. Rest in a cool, shady spot. Use fans. • Wear light-coloured clothing made primarily of

cotton. • Do the heaviest work in the coolest time of the day. • Work in the shade. • For heavy work in hot areas, take turns with other workers, so some can rest. If you work in protective clothing, you need more rest breaks. You may also need to check your temperature and pulse rate. If you think someone is overcome by heat (weak, tired, hot, flushed, possibly unresponsive), call 911 immediately. Move the victim to the shade. Loosen his/her clothes. Below are the Ontario SPCA’s top tips to help keep your pets safe. 1 Keep an eye on the weather. Pets left outdoors on hot summer days can be in serious danger. Dogs should only be left outdoors for short periods, should have sufficient water and a cool, sheltered place out of direct sun. Walking early morning or evening when it is cooler is advisable. 2 Provide an adequate supply of food and water. Pets need nutritious food and a constant supply of fresh drinking water each day. Be aware that water and nutritional needs will vary with temperature, age, exercise levels and the health of your pets. 3 Not a wise practice to leave a pet in a parked car. Even cracked windows won’t protect your pets from overheating during hot summer days. For example, a dog’s normal body temperature is 39°C and a temperature of 41°C can be withstood only for a very short time before irreparable brain damage or death can occur. Similarly, in winter cars hold in the cold, acting like refrigerators, which could cause your dog to freeze to death. 4 Supervise children around your pets. Children can easily terrorize pets with their quick and jerky movements, high-pitched squeals, and general roughness – particularly animals that have not been socialized with children in their early development. Always supervise children around your pets to ensure both parties’ safety; separate pets and children when needed; always ensure your pet has a choice to leave the situation if he’s uncomfortable; and teach children how to behave appropriately around pets (allowing pets to approach them, moving slowly, being gentle etc.). 5 Meet your pets’ physical and mental needs. Animals whose physical and mental needs aren’t met typically exhibit behavioral problems because of boredom and excess energy. Dogs, for example, typically benefit from a minimum of two walks a day, some type of training (whether its obedience, tricks or agility), and other mentally stimulating activities such as being fed meals in a Kong or playing “find” it with hidden toys or treats. • Store produce properly to keep it fresh and safe for eating. • Wash produce well by rinsing under safe running water. Look for quality Buying only quality produce is a first step you can take to help make sure fresh fruit and vegetables are safe to eat. Avoid buying or eating fruit and vegetables that are bruised, moldy or damaged in any way. Harmful microorganisms can get into damaged fruit and vegetables and become difficult to remove. That can lead to food borne illness, often called food poisoning. Store produce properly Make a point of storing fresh fruit and vegetables properly to keep them fresh and safe to eat. For most vegetables and fruit, washing produce before you store it can make it spoil faster. Rinse fruit and vegetables (except for leafy greens) only when you are ready to use them. Leafy greens will stay fresh longer if they are rinsed, wrapped in paper towel and then placed in a container or sealed plastic bag after purchase. Some vegetables and fruit need to be stored in the refrigerator, others need to ripen before being placed in the refrigerator, and others are best stored at room temperature. If you don’t think that you’ll be able to eat your produce before it spoils, try freezing. A general rule is to refrigerate most fresh fruit and vegetables except for: Keep at room temperature until ripe, then refrigerate: apricots, avocados, kiwifruit, mangoes, melons, nectarines, papaya, peaches, pears, plums, tomatoes. Keep at room temperature, best not in the refrigerator: bananas, garlic, onions (except green onions), mature potatoes, pumpkins, rutabagas, sweet potatoes, winter squash. Dense raw vegetable such as potatoes and onions are well suited to being stored in cold cellars or cool room temperatures. Be sure to store fresh fruit and vegetables in a refrigerator or cooler at or below 4°C (40°F) within two hours of peeling or cutting. Always use clean containers to store washed or prepared vegetables and fruit. And remember to keep fresh produce away from any raw meat, poultry or seafood when preparing or storing it. Throw out any fruit or vegetables that are spoiled or that are left out at room temperature for more than two hours after they have been peeled or cut. Wash produce well The final step is to rinse fresh fruit and vegetables well under safe running water before cutting, preparing or eating them. Water is best for cleaning fresh produce. There’s no need to use soap, detergents or other washing solutions. Just rub or scrub the produce gently to remove any dirt. Not planning to eat the peel? You should still wash fruit and vegetables before peeling or cutting into them. This will prevent anything on the surface from getting on the knife and then contaminating the insides. Throw away the outer leaves of leafy

vegetables, such as lettuce or cabbage, before washing. Use a soft clean produce brush to scrub fruit and vegetables that have firm surfaces such as oranges, melons, carrots and potatoes. Avoid using sponges that are difficult to keep clean and dry to avoid spreading bacteria around. Always wash your hands with hot water and soap (for at least 20 seconds) before and after handling fresh produce. Also use hot water and soap to wash countertops, cutting boards, utensils and dishes that come into contact with fresh produce. Then sanitize these with a mild bleach solution that you can make by mixing 5 mL (1 tsp.) of bleach with 750 mL (3 cups) of water. You may also be wondering… It’s a common question – is organic food safer than other foods? Making sure food is safe to eat starts at the farm, whether it’s organic or not. In terms of food safety, organically grown produce, such as salad greens, have been shown to be as food safe as regular produce. The same food safety rules apply to organic and non-organic produce – it’s important to select, store and wash fresh fruit and vegetables properly. A few years ago, the City of Kawartha Lakes facilitated a community-wide study to discuss and determine the most important safety risk factors for local residents. There was consensus among the groups participating that falls in the home was the greatest safety concern – especially in a community such as ours that has a very high percentage of seniors in its population. In the years since the study, nothing has changed to decrease the importance of falls prevention for seniors in their homes. Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes Health and Support Services does its bit to help by offering a popular falls prevention program that focuses on gentle exercise and education to help limit the risk of falling. There’s No Fun in Fungus

What does that delectable, garlic and butter fried accompaniment of mushrooms next to your steak have in common with thick, brown-discoloured, and flaking toenails? Well, nothing palatable for sure! However, they’re indeed cousins at a scientific level – the phylum known as fungi to be precise. Nail fungus (also called onychomycosis) is an extremely common problem. It’s contagious and thrives in moist conditions such as persistently wet or sweaty footwear, pool decks, bathrooms, hotel carpets, and public change rooms. The symptoms of fungal nails can be shared by other problems such as psoriasis or nail trauma, and so your chiropodist may sometimes take a nail sample for microscopic analysis to determine whether fungus is present and what type it is. There’s a new smile to welcome you in Fenelon Falls. Her name is Amber Bowins. She recently joined the Salon 31 team of professionals. Salon 31’s Jennifer Swanson says Amber’s arrival worked out at just at the right time. The salon was in transition when the opportunity came up to recruit the talented stylist. Amber specializes in all aspects of hair design including cuts, styling, hair extensions and the popular Elumen colours. “Elumen colours are bright and fun. They’re a big hit with the kids, too,” says Jennifer. Jennifer has been with the salon for 14 years, including the past three as the owner. She and Brenda Handley, Salon 31’s esthetician extraordinaire, are both eager for clients to get to know Amber. Jennifer says, “There’s a nice, friendly, familyfeel to our salon. Everyone is welcome here and we hope everybody feels it when they come in.” Now with a new professional on hand to extend the welcome, the team continues to provide a full complement of services.
