Paper Cuts Promise

The only thing better than someone cheering me on is the feeling I get when I cheer somebody else on. Of course, I speak only for myself.

The pat on the back, subtle nudge, words of encouragement; that, “You can do it! Good job!” are all gestures and acknowledgements we can extend anytime and literally change someone’s world.

I didn’t always know this. Hopefully, it was because I just didn’t know better.

If I could go back in time and improve my choices, one thing would be to follow through on my promises.

Those I made to others and myself. In recent years, I consciously worked on it because it was my job – it took mere moments to realize what a difference it made.

Think about it. Encouragement.

Promises. Following through can take us out of our way in time or distance. They can take us out of our comfort zone.

How easy it is to rationalize our way out of them.

I read this somewhere: Don’t get sidetracked by people who are not on track. Don’t get sidetracked when you’re

following through on encouragement, a task or your word.

Unless it’s deliberate. Deliberate sidetracking can result in great coincidences and splendid results. Like flipping a coin at the fork in the road.

Several years ago, a friend and I embarked on an adventure – a sweet, meandering road trip without a timeline or particular destination. As we approached Bennington, Vermont, we spotted the white church and steeple often associated with New England towns. It was autumn; I recall the sunshine, cool air and magnificent colours. We stopped for a stretch and a wander through the cemetery next to the church.

There I saw it, right in front of me.

As if I was meant to find it. It was the weathered stone that marked the grave of Robert Lee Frost. My hero poet of all time. The Road Not Taken, Christmas Trees, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening Robert Frost.

1874 to 1973.

How many generations of souls did he cheer on by his words and talent?

How many did he inspire to stay on track?

I understand the reason behind adopting a new name was introduced because GCH residents serviced from the Buckhorn Post Office could not use the name Buckhorn as it wasn’t the official name of the area.

As a resident of the portion of (formerly) Harvey Twp., east of Bobcaygeon to Flynns Corners, we are serviced from the Bobcaygeon Post Office. As residents and taxpayers to Trent Lakes, will we be changing our address or remain as Bobcaygeon K0M 1A0?

This also raises another question. Since Buckhorn post office residents could not use Buckhorn, due to proper name requirements, why does Bobcaygeon get to use Bobcaygeon? Are they not (proper) City of Kawartha Lakes?

Why Won’t GCH Counsel Defend Its Constituents?

I recently read in Kawartha Lakes This Week, that the CKL Council supports the review of the City’s heavy truck regulations. As many know there is an existing

application for a 400+ acre Mega Quarry just outside Bobcaygeon, towards Buckhorn. There are apparently many more quarry applications “in the wings.” It has been estimated that 80% of the trucks from the current application will head to the GTA via Bobcaygeon and Lindsay. I think it is responsible of CKL counsel to review the City regulations “to restrict/manage heavy truck load traffic”. Cumulative effect of heavy hauling equipment will take its toll on the roads. I also read that CKL have an Aggregate Secondary Plan Steering Committee. Another responsible move by that counsel that is to be applauded.

On the other hand, I live in Galway-Cavendish & Harvey and what we wouldn’t give for them to develop such a committee. Oh, we had one...in 2004–2006. I have read the minutes from those years.

They designated a lot of land under the aggregate resources act and then it was no more. It was developed as an advisory committee that the Council could utilize to determine future aggregate concerns and issues within the Township. Why would they still not want this committee?

Apparently, representatives from our Council were asked by the CKL Council in December to attend a meeting concerning the aggregate industry.

Big surprise, none of our counsel attended! There has been a suggestion made to our council to form a quarry steering committee with representation from the public. Transparency has been asked for. Many asked council not to pass the zoning by-law that would see this Mega Quarry come closer to fruition.

To no one’s surprise, they saw fit to do none of these things and washed their hands clean.

GCH passed the zoning by-law in favour of the Mega Quarry and then basically it has fallen on the public to appeal it at the OMB (Ontario Municipality Board). In many constituent’s minds the Mayor and Council have basically said it is better to appeal on the individual’s dollar. Whose dollars are those at the Township office? Why are they so indifferent?

Why would they not fight for us? Why do they refuse our help? Why will they not work with us? Why do they seem to be “petrified of the OMB?” (Quote from 2004/2006 committee minutes) Again, the silence and indifference is stifling.

I am frustrated, disappointed and frightened that quarries will surround us if we don’t stand up now and demand a Management plan for existing and future quarry applications. No more approvals until we have a plan. Does this not make sense?

The Bobcaygeon Curling Club held an “In-House” Bonspiel for their lady members, sponsored by our own Strangs’ Valu-Mart. The theme was “Life’s a Beach.”

Such fun with costumers, trivia contests, food, and of course, curling. Thanks again to Strang’s for their prizes, food deals and support for eleven years.

Family Day Skate, Monday, February 18th at the Bobcaygeon Arena was a resounding success for the fourth consecutive year. Approximately 350 people came out over the course of the day and we gave away more than 400 hot dogs and 130 cups of hot chocolate.

Thanks to Fred and Heather Strang of Strang’s Valu Mart for their generous contribution of the buns for our hot dogs (the balance left over was donated to the Bobcaygeon Helps Food Bank) and Kawartha Lakes Emergency Services for providing us with two tables of valuable information for families and homes as well as bringing Sparky along with them to skate with the kids.

The sport of curling is alive and well, and the future is in good hands if the Fenelon Funspiel is any indication. The teamwork and sportsmanship of these young curlers are heart-warming to watch; their expertise, excitement and fun thoroughly evident as they enjoyed the day. Every participant left the Fenelon Falls Curling Club a winner, with their prize and a big smile on their face.

Sixty-four curlers, ages 7-16, took to the ice for two 6-end games, with a pizza lunch from Godfather’s Pizza between games, and prizes for all. Novice and experienced curlers came from: Bobcaygeon, Woodville, Minden, Haliburton, Port Perry and Coldwater, to join 3 Fenelon rinks on the ice. Parents, grandparents, siblings, and friends, filled the spectator gallery, adding to the festive atmosphere. Thank you to Burke’s Kitchens and Salon 31 for prize donations.

Bev Vivian and Heather LeCraw, coaches of the Fenelon Falls Junior Curling program were overwhelmed with the support of parents and club members to organize and host the non-competitive event. Thanks and appreciation go to Alicia, Jen, Maria and Danielle, our volunteer kitchen team, Cheryl and Leanne for the prize table and lunch time games and activities, Rick for registration and draw master, and of course the coaches and parents of visiting clubs who braved the snowdrifts left over from Friday’s storm to drive the boys and girls to the Fenelon Falls club.

The North West Trunk The North West Trunk Project finally got approved.

On Feb. 28 at 1 pm, Council met in a special meeting ostensibly to deal with one major item on the agenda – the NWT.

When I arrived 20 minutes before the start of the meeting, I immediately sensed this meeting was not going to be the usual run-of–the mill meeting of council. The first thing was 40+ mostly young men carrying placards extolling the need for jobs.

Secondly, parking space was at a premium, which, on most regular council meetings, this is not a problem. Upon entering the Council Chamber, signs designating space reserved for the media were evident. They’re not normally there. Every member of Council was there, ready to put closure on an issue that on Feb. 06 ended in a tie vote necessitating the issue being sent back to the steering committee for further review. Better stay awake for this one, I thought.

At the core of the problem was the fear that boring under the Scugog River would release PCB’s that are present in the silt on the bottom of the river.

Ron Taylor, Director of Planning, along with his staff and Stantec Consulting Group, assured Councillors and the public that boring under the river would have no impact on PCB’s as the drilling would be 3 meters below the river bottom. Ward 10 Councillor Gord James was nevertheless unmoved by their assurances and said that, environmentally speaking, the ‘overthe-river’ option was the safer way to go.

A total of nine speakers, were each given 5 minutes to make their case for the over or under option. Eight were advocating the boring option, most notably Gordon Mason of Mason Homes and two of his consultants saying it was time to get on with building the City. The NWT is crucial to expanding the tax base of the City by building over 2,000 new homes and bringing in new businesses such as Walmart. Sharon King one of the speakers and was quite articulate in advocating the bridge option. In

the back of everyone’s mind, I suspect, was the recent withdrawal of Home Depot even though it has been said the delay of this project was in no way related to their decision.

As the afternoon wore on, it was evident that Councillor James’ position would no longer sway enough Councillors to support the bridge option.

One has to remember that the developers are paying 71% of the cost of the North West Trunk Project with the City picking up the other 29%, the majority of that covered by the Provincial Infrastructure Renewal process. In a last desperate attempt, a clearly frustrated James confronted Director Taylor, repeatedly demanding information related to the bridge that was, he believed, relevant to supporting his bridge position. Taylor, for his part, assured the Councillor that he and his staff had done all that was requested of Council. At one point, James wondered why Taylor was not able to reach the President of the Algonquin Company for the information he requested.

Taylor replied that he had the work number with the extension but that was the only number he had.

Councillor James admonished Taylor for not having the cell phone number. Now that’s nit-picking.

In a recorded vote, 10 in favour and 6 opposed, the NWT Project got approved. It is interesting to note that in doing so, two Councillors (Stauble and Villemaire) said that in their heart they wanted the bridge but they were voting in favour of the option of boring under the river. The Chamber exploded in applause when the results were announced by Mayor McGee. Open Year rOund

Bobcaygeon Chamber of Commerce The Chamber of Commerce events calendar reintroduces its popular Before 9/After 5 gettogethers.

Originally designated After 5, because the lateafternoon time would attract the business community after they’d closed their doors for the day, it became Before 9/After 5 because popular demand was for the 90-minute sessions to be held before those same doors opened. The morning format remains the same – a full breakfast followed by a presentation by a local businessperson or other authority on an interesting topic.

This year’s initial edition will be held at the Lock 32 Pub Restaurant, Bolton Street, from 7:30 to 9 am, Tuesday, March 19, with the $8 fee buying a baconor sausage-and-egg breakfast with juice, toast, home fries and tea or coffee. The presenter will be City of Kawartha Lakes Tourism Development Officer Laurie Bell, who will speak on the Economic Development Department’s “Discover, Play and Stay” tourism program.

Alexander Dobson returns to Bobcaygeon with pianist Jeanie Chung on March 9th after performing with Cicela Månsson in Handel’s Messiah in December of 2010. In that memorable performance he had the audience riveted with his commanding solos mixing his gorgeous voice with exceptional acting skills. Baritone Alexander Dobson is highly praised for his musicality and dramatic awareness in a wide range of repertoire.

On March 9th hear him perform well-known music, ranging from the Songs of Travel by Ralph Vaughan Williams to songs from Show Boat and South Pacific to the best loved opera arias from the Barber of Seville and the Marriage of Figaro.

The Second Annual Pancake Breakfast of Village Baptist Church was held at the Bobcaygeon Legion this year and attendance was up significantly over last year with more than 260 visitors enjoying a free pancake breakfast on a cold Tuesday, February 12.

An additional 30 meals were delivered throughout the community.

Mardi Gras in Fenelon Falls

They weren’t serving jambalaya and gumbo, they were flipping pancakes! The gentleman of St. James Church Fenelon Falls were all lined up smartly behind the buffet table, wearing aprons, Mardi Gras beads and big smiles.

“Mardi Gras” literally means “Fat Tuesday” and Tuesday, February 12 was the day. Big, fat, fluffy pancakes were served, along with sausages and gallons of real maple syrup. Ladies from the church bustled by, wearing colourful Mardi Gras glasses and serving homemade cookies and ice cream. Tables were decorated in a Mardi Gras theme. Several little girls went home with smiles on their faces, wearing the table decorations, “glow in the dark” butterfly masks. One big girl, Shirley Johnson, went home smiling as the winner of the 50/50 draw.

St. James church served 121 pancake dinners, a real community event, fun for all ages. Fenelon Falls is fortunate to have the Association of churches which includes eight diverse churches or denominations, who all co operate in a wonderful spirit of fellowship and fun. The Mardi Gras Pancake supper was part of a series of dinners, one of their planned events which benefit the whole community. Over $1,000 was raised. “Laissez les bon temps rouler!”

BOARD OF TRADE LAUNCHED In Kawartha Lakes

It’s official. The Kawartha Lakes Board of Trade has been incorporated and registered, and is ready to “Serve business and support our community.” This is its purpose and function, says Marlene Morrison Nicholls, one of the Executive team of the Lindsay & District Chamber of Commerce and among the founding directors of the new community-based association.

“While it’s been six months of effort to get to this announcement, the idea has been on the radar for a number of years, as it has for other organizations across the City of Kawartha Lakes.” said Ms. Morrison Nicholls. “This would have never happened without interest and support from Bobcaygeon, Norland, Coboconk, Fenelon Falls, Omemee and Woodville, the City and of course, the Kawartha Lakes CFDC.”

Settlers’ Village

Things are coming back to life at the Village. I am back in the office after a nice break. Art, woodcarving, quilting and bunka groups are meeting as usual and schools are calling for the spring bookings! Even summer camps are booking spaces, so please call now to avoid disappointment.

We’ve had several bookings for weddings this year. Many couples have chosen our unique setting for their wedding service and or reception. The 126 yr old Fairbairn Church is a picturesque quaint white country church that holds approximately 125. For larger weddings or anniversary celebrations, we have rented the Murphy Barn, which is a wonderful backdrop for any event. Our Gazebo, donated by Frank and Joyce Poole, is also a lovely place if you chose an outdoor theme for your wedding. We rent chairs and can provide information about decorating and Ministers to help you with your special day. Many couples come to the Village after their wedding to take pictures surrounded by the old buildings, gardens and special settings. We welcome you to call the office to be sure we are aware of your intentions. We simply ask that you make a donation to the Village to help offset our operating expenses.

We are eager to get into the 2013 season. Lots of work to be done, so if you are interested in volunteering, now is the time to call the office, 705.738.6163.

Health & Wellness VARICOSE VEINS What Causes Them?

Varicose veins are very common, affecting up to 25% of women and 15% of men. In this article, you’ll learn what causes varicose veins.

To understand the cause of varicose veins, it’s important to remember that there are actually two types of blood vessels, arteries and veins.

Arteries bring blood down to the legs under pulsating, high pressure, whereas the veins work by bringing the blood back up the legs, the blood flowing more slowly and against gravity.

To counteract this slow flow and the effect of gravity, there are special valves found inside the veins. These valves keep blood flowing upwards and are found in almost all types of leg veins.

When vein valves become damaged, varicose veins can form. There are several causes of valve failure, probably the most important factor being genetics and family history. Trauma to the legs can also damage the valves as can the increased blood volume of pregnancy.

Certain factors can aggravate the damage to the valves and make the leg veins worse. Examples of these aggravating factors include, repetitive and heavy lifting, standing for long periods of times and inactivity.

Many people in our community greet each day with a brave face and wonder what is in store for them as they deal with caring for a loved one or friend coping with physical or mental health challenges.

Nobody in such circumstances needs to feel that they are alone when it comes to getting support, but that can often be how such caregivers see things. Yet, as the number of Canadians with dementia and mental illness increases, it is important for such caregivers to know where and how to access help when they need it.

There are many local people who volunteer with agencies to help residents with such illnesses. It is understandable that such volunteers have needs in dealing with clients who face challenges.

On March 26, Community Care presents a training session for agency volunteers and people who deal with individuals suffering from Alzheimer disease, dementia or mental illness. The free session will be 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Fenelon Falls Seniors

Guest speakers at the volunteer training session will be from the Alzheimer Society of Peterborough and Kawartha Lakes, and the Kawartha Lakes branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association. PUMP IRON

Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide. Due to iron requirements increasing during growth, deficiency is most commonly seen in infants, growing children and pregnant women. Severe iron deficiency is known as Anemia.

Signs and symptoms include extreme fatigue, difficulties in mental concentration, depression, and compromised immune function. If you suspect you are low in iron, consult your doctor. Once a deficiency is identified, the supplementation of iron with vitamin B12, folic acid and vitamin C is important to increase iron levels and to ensure iron is being absorbed and utilized properly.

The Recommended Daily Allowance for iron is 7mg/day for children, 8mg/day for men and postmenopausal women, 18mg/day for pre-menopausal women and 27mg/day for pregnant women.

Good food sources of iron include: blackstrap molasses, lentils, spinach, chickpeas, beans, quinoa, beet greens, tahini and kale.

Blackstrap Molasses Tea Ingredients: •1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk

• 2 tbsp Blackstrap Molasses • A dash of cinnamon Preparation: Warm almond milk on medium-low heat on stovetop. When milk is just starting to boil, remove from heat and pour into cup. Stir in 2 tbsp of Blackstrap molasses and dash of cinnamon. Enjoy!

(Two tablespoons of Blackstrap molasses has approximately 7mg of iron which is enough for a child’s dose of iron.)

Featuring Christopher Tuberdyke Saturday is Mexican night at our house. Having a theme really helps narrow down the dreaded ‘So, what’s for dinner?’ question. These enchiladas capture the bright and lively flavours of Tex-Mex without being too heavy. Try them for your next fiesta night!

Zucchini and Black Bean Enchiladas

Enchilada Sauce:

• 1- 5.5oz can tomato paste • 2 1/2 cups vegetable stock • 3 cloves garlic • 1/4 teaspoon each dried oregano, cumin, and chili powder • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro • 1 shallot, grated • 6-8 slices pickled jalapeno • 1 tsp (or more) of your favourite hot sauce • 1/4 cup sour cream • Salt/fresh pepper

Zucchini Filling:

• 2 large zucchini, halved and sliced into half-moons • 1 small red onion, diced • 2 cups black beans, rinsed and drained • 6 oz soft goat cheese • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro • 2 tablespoons olive oil • Salt/fresh pepper • 6 corn tortillas • 1 avocado

1 Preheat oven to 425.

2 P repare enchilada sauce. Combine first 8 ingredients

in a blender and puree until smooth. Transfer to a saucepan and bring to a bubble. Simmer 15 minutes until slightly reduced and thickened. Remove from heat and whisk in sour cream. Season with salt/ pepper.

3 Toss zucchini and onion in olive oil and place on 2 baking sheets. (Don’t crowd them onto one; they will steam and not roast). Roast 10-15 minutes until tender and starting to brown. Transfer to a large mixing bowl. Mix in black beans, cilantro and 3/4 of the goat cheese.

4 Pour 1/2 of the sauce into a 13x9 baking dish. Divide

filling among tortillas and roll. Place seam side down in prepared baking dish. Top with remaining sauce and dot with remaining goat cheese. Bake, uncovered, 20 minutes until bubbly. Let sit 5 minutes before serving.

Garnish each serving with avocado, cilantro, and sour cream.
