The great thing about living with two curious little people is the fact they constantly report on anything and everything they read – from cereal boxes to current events in the newspaper. They have also taken to reading every issue of The Promoter. Recently they discovered the Fenelon Falls Home

& Cottage Show takes place this weekend and suddenly we need to have a multitude of home improvements done – from a new “bay window for our front room” to an addition built off Joan’s bedroom that would “walk out” to the backyard. “What about the dog, Mom? She could use a house too.” It is fun to dream what the house would look like if we renovated, excavated or even just updated the look of it. To be honest I’d settle for a clean home – one where things are tucked neatly into shelving instead of shoved into drawers, or simply ‘dropped’

at the front door when they walk through it. “We could all use more closet space, Mom.” Featuring more than 75 exhibitors, the Fenelon Falls Home & Cottage Show has something for everyone – whether you’re looking for a great contractor or a new backsplash for the kitchen in your waterfront home. “They even have entertainment for kids, Mom.” The Home & Cottage Show kicks off on Friday and runs through until Sunday. For more details see our Show Guide on pages 23-26 in this issue. See you there!

Village Voice SOLUTION TO BUDGET CUTS AT TSW SIMPLE

The solution to the proposed cuts to the Trent Severn’s operating budget is so simple, I can’t believe the politicians and bureaucrats haven’t figured it out yet. If they bought one less F35 we would have more than enough money to keep the Trent Severn running for another 189 consecutive years.

Sincerely, Maicey, Bobcaygeon

ps I would like to thank everyone who voted for me in the category of Outstanding Service/Volunteer Organization during the recent Bobcaygeon & Area Chamber of Commerce’s Awards of Excellence. I really appreciate it.

WETLAND PROJECT DEDICATED TO PRESERVING NATURAL TREASURE

The Provincially Significant Wetland project was started to address two main issues. First, some wetlands are being used as dumping grounds for all sorts of garbage. Because education is part of our mandate, we wanted to make the public aware of the great treasure we have in this community. Provincially significant wetlands are deemed so by the Ministry of Natural Resources because of unique plants and/or animals that are found in them or because of their importance to a waterway. By its nature a wetland has water moving through it slowly and therefore, acts as a great filter for nutrients in the water thus preventing an overload of things like nitrogen and phosphorus entering the lakes. Our municipality has over 50 wetlands designated as provincially significant, more than any other municipality in Ontario. We feel this is another reason we live in such a special area. It is important that they be respected. So the sign project endeavours to help prevent the dumping of garbage and to educate the public. On the sign is our website address which will provide information about these precious ecosystems.

The project to date has consisted of signing 9 wetlands using 20 signs. The project was a partnership between the Kawartha Field Naturalists, the Victoria Stewardship Council and the City of Kawartha Lakes. We would like to sign more of these wetlands but need to come up with the funding to do so. For more information go to www. kawarthafieldnaturalists.org and on the home page is a link to the Provincially Significant Wetlands page found on our website. The Kawartha Field Naturalists is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of our heritage. Meetings, guest speakers and field trips are the means of providing our members with the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and understanding of the natural environment. We are also involved in educating the general public, with an emphasis towards youth, so that they can become aware of the incredible natural beauty in our area.

COMMUNITY CARE GETS A BOOST

A presentation was made to Council by Catherine Danbrook, CEO, Community Care. Since 1989, under an agreement with the City, Community Care operates a public transportation system for disabled persons. The agreement has never been updated or amended since it was originally signed. It remains in effect, and makes the service a part of the City’s public transit system. The original intent of the agreement was to provide service to disabled persons living outside the Town of Lindsay. Originally the service had one (1) wheelchair accessible van. In the intervening 23 years, with changing community demographics and the changes in people’s needs for accessible transportation, as well as a stronger societal commitment to transportation for disabled persons, the CCCKL services have grown and diversified to meet riders’ needs. Their vehicle fleet is now 11 vehicles including specialized vans for wheelchairs and stretchers. I believe one of the major contributing factors to their success is that the drivers are primarily volunteers who are selected and trained by Community Care. Unfortunately, they have been running a deficit for 2011 and 2012 and are in need of Interim Financial Assistance from the City. Council approved a grant of $200,000 to be made to CCCKL to assist in offsetting that portion of the operating costs of their Volunteer Driver services not covered by Ontario Works and Ontario Disability Support Program payments. It was prorated to $150,000 for the period from April 1 to December 31, 2012. As well, Council approved

flat rates (per one-way trip) for trips with both origin and destination within Lindsay ($7.00), Bobcaygeon ($5.00), and Fenelon Falls ($6.50). All other trips are $0.42 per kilometer as well as a coordination fee of $8.00 per one-way. It was also decided in a separate motion that the Transportation Committee look into a longer-term solution regarding a public transportation system for seniors and disabled persons. I agree that a more equitable solution is needed so that Community Care does not have to return, cap in hand, to the City for funds. Community Care has been there for us since 1989 and is an important and vital resource for our seniors and disabled people. They need effective support from the City.

PILOT PROJECT APPROVED

Council approved a pilot project for the recovery of outstanding Provincial fines from other municipalities by attaching the charges to the relevant property tax account. The pilot project will involve the cities of Ottawa, Toronto, Mississauga, Belleville, the City of Kawartha Lakes and the County of Hastings. Should the project continue beyond the pilot stage, the City of Kawartha Lakes should enter into agreements with other municipalities interested in recovering outstanding fines. Locally, Staff has already been adding outstanding fines to property tax accounts where all of the owners are responsible for the fine. A number of cases have been successful.

COUNCIL APPROVES ZONING CHANGE

An application by Joan Young of Fenelon Falls, was tabled which proposes to change the zone category from the Agricultural (A1) Zone to the Agricultural Exception Fifteen (A1-15(H)) Holding Zone. The change would permit the operation of a Soil Processing and Screening Facility. Before taking a vote on this issue, Dr. Kerstin Kelly of Fenelon Animal Clinic addressed Council asking that the application be denied citing environmental issues related to the planned operation of the facility. After a period of discussion and noting that only 10% of the land would be used in the screening process, Council approved the change.

BOBCAYGEON SPLASH PAD TO BE COMPLETED

Now that all capital funding requirements have been achieved, Council approved a motion to ask Staff to assist the Volunteer committee with co-ordination and completion of the splash pad project. You may recall that the Splash Pad will be located at Tommy Anderson Park in Bobcaygeon. Council also directed Staff to include a provision in future City operating budgets, estimated at $25,000, to cover the ongoing annual operating costs associated with the splash pad facility.

METERS ALLOCATED FOR CHARITY PARKING PROJECT

Councilor Gord James put forward a pilot project from the Lindsay Business Improvement Area suggesting that a one year trial for ‘Charity Parking Meters’ has been implemented in several municipalities. The concept is to designate and mark certain meters for specified charities and all parking collections from that designated meter are retained for that charity. The BIA would set up an application process and qualifications to determine what charities receive the funding, and consult with City staff prior to launching this project. It is recommended that a maximum of six meters be designated for this project. Councilor James also suggested that each of the designated nonprofit charities would have the option of decorating their parking meter(s) in the charity’s logo/colours. Apparently each meter within downtown Lindsay averages approximately $540 in parking revenue on an annual basis. Limiting the project to six meters maximum suggests a total reduction in annual parking revenue of $3,240.

COURTESY CARD IDEA WELCOMED

The City of Peterborough and the City of Orillia have implemented “courtesy cards” in order to better educate visitors to downtown areas of parking requirements and fees in a more “business-friendly” manner. The concept is to provide courtesy cards to vehicles where a meter has expired and provide a

grace period prior to issuing a parking ticket. The courtesy cards would state that additional time has been provided to the vehicle owner and that their visit and downtown shopping is appreciated. Again, Councilor James suggested that the City opt in as well.

WATER RATES INCREASED

For those of us whose water consumption is metered, we may be faced with an approximate water and wastewater rate increase of 7.3% for the year 2012, effective as soon as June 1. For those under the flat rate system it would mean $16.57/month (2012) versus $15.93 (2011). In order to insure safe and potable water for the consumer and to ensure that waste water is processed responsibly ensure the rate increase is necessary, says the City. A comprehensive preventive maintenance program is being established by the Water and Wastewater Division to replace or rehabilitate infrastructure that has reached the end of its life cycle. Now here is the rub! They tell us that there is also a need to conserve water and rightly so. Now, if all the taxpayers do the responsible thing and make every effort to conserve our usage it follows that the expected revenue to the City would decrease. If this were to happen, then the City will have no alternative other than to increase the rates again and again. Talk about being caught between a rock and a hard place.

CUTS AT TRENT-SEVERN TO HAVE DEVESTATING IMPACT ON TOURISM

by Melodie MCCullough

Cuts to the operations and services of the TrentSevern Waterway will mean only one thing for local tourism operators – a huge and devastating impact, with reduced employment and loss of livelihoods. That was the consensus at a recent meeting in Peterborough organized by the union which represents canal workers to let the voices of waterway stakeholders be heard.“Cutting back is not the solution,” said Randy Hinton, owner of the

Kawartha Spirit cruise boat in Fenelon Falls. “It’s going to devastate the tourism industry. We’ll lose our school tours in the spring, and in the fall our fall colour tours.” As part of the recent federal budget, it was announced Parks Canada would be reducing the length of its boating season and hours of operation to “periods of highest requirements” for the entire length of the Trent-Severn and other canals systems to save money. The federal government has directed Parks Canada to cut $29 million from its budget. This will mean changes to the operating season for not only employees but boaters, marinas, boat operators and any business and community dependent upon tourism along the canals and waterways. Any operation cutbacks by Parks Canada will affect four canal systems: Trent-Severn Waterway, Rideau Canal system, and Sault Ste. Marie Canal system, all in Ontario; and the Chambley Canal system in Quebec. Details of the amounts of cuts to waterway and canal operations have not yet been announced by Parks Canada, but all lock operators and masters have received notice this week their jobs are in jeopardy, according to a Public Service Alliance press release. Mark Lowell, owner of Log Chateau Park campground north of Fenelon Falls, said tourism operators in the area have been trying to build the shoulder seasons and let people know “we are open for business”. But with the proposed cutbacks, the government is saying “we’re closed for business”, he said. “We

should be lowering fees, expanding the hours, and allowing more use. All the communities north of Peterborough are tourism-driven. The economic impact of all these communities is attached to the waterway.” While the government has used cost-saving measurements to make its decisions, it has not considered the “social” measurements of what the waterway brings to the Kawarthas, said Jill Quast, owner, with her husband Frank, of Happy Days Houseboat Rentals in Bobcaygeon. She said that with a decrease in operations, people will lose their jobs. This could lead to employees leaving that job sector and cause a shortage of skilled marine workers down the road. Four years ago Parks Canada announced a $63 million re-investment over five years in the waterway, said Quast. “It’s not acceptable to reinvest that money and four years later take it back. We have something that is a national treasure that is very saleable. But you can’t offer half an invitation (for the season).” Christine Collins, national president of the Union of Canadian Transit Employees, travelled from Ottawa to address the meeting. She said, while no definite details regarding hours and season-length have been announced, Rideau Canal lock workers have received notice that their season will end Sept. 16 this year, compared to just after Thanksgiving in the past. She is concerned about the lack of consultation between stakeholders and the government. Parks Canada, “which is supposed to protect Canada’s heritage” has dictated, not consulted, and the impact will be felt by the thousands of families who depend on tourism and the economic spin-offs of the Trent-Severn Waterway, she said. “Think of bed and breakfasts, restaurants, tourism shops and community festivals established to serve the people who use the canals,” added Collins. “This government’s decisions are going to hit them hard. Our history, our heritage, our Canada should not be put in jeopardy by Parks Canada because of its shortcomings.” Organisers urged business owners to set up meetings, get their customers, friends and neighbours involved – everyone who will be affected – and contact their local Members of Parliament to voice concerns.

TIME TO BUCKLE UP FIDO!

When you get in the car, do you fasten your seatbelt? Do you make the kids buckle up? What about your dog? Is their life not as important? Every year countless animals are badly injured or lose their lives because they were not properly restrained in a vehicle. Dogs riding in the back of pick-up trucks are particularly at risk. It isn’t law here in Ontario yet, but in BC the SPCA, the RCMP and ICBC RoadSense have teamed up for an awareness campaign on the safe way to transport your pet. The campaign urges pet guardians to take proper steps when transporting their animals. “A dog seatbelt is a simple and easy way to prevent your dog from becoming a projectile in the instance of an accident, causing both injury to you and themselves,” according to Danie Farrell of pawz N’ clawz in Bobcaygeon. “It’s simple to buckle them in if you have a seatbelt harness. Strap it on and click the buckle in. Come in and see us and we can help you find a harness to fit your special companion, and keep your pets safe.”

WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO WORK WITH MY MOMMY

I like to call my mother, ‘mommy’. She has had four kids and she still is beautiful, wonderful, kind, smart, loving, caring and so much more. When I get hurt, my mom is always there to comfort me and to be there for me. She works two jobs and works her butt off every week. When she gets a day off, she never

gets to rest because she is taking us to skating competitions, hockey and the dentist. Even if I don’t win at skating she tells me that I still did a good job and I tried my best. When I did my ‘Shoot the Duck’ trick in skating, she told me that she was so proud of me and that I’m the best skater in my group. My mommy buys me things that I don’t need, like my ipod, even when she doesn’t have the money to buy them. She’s so great that she will work around the problems to get it for me. At night mommy tucks me in and says; I love you from the moon and back a million times. At school, mommy pays for all of my school trips and when I get my report card back she hugs me and says that I did a really great job. When I grow up, I want to work with her because I know that she won’t be around forever. I want to spend all of the time I can with her because she is that special and important to me. My mom is always making sure that I am happy and have everything I need for home, school and skating. My mom is so awesome that it would be hard for anyone not to see that she is the greatest mom in the whole world. I love you mommy.

Preparing Surfaces for Painting

Preparing your furniture for painting is simple. Just follow these steps: •

ough Sanding: Start with a R medium-grit sandpaper to remove traces of dirt and residues from polishing or waxing compounds, which may cause adhesion problems for the primer or paint. Repairing: Next, repair cracks, joints that have expanded, and nail holes with a good woodpatching compound. After the compound has thoroughly dried, sand it down to make it even with the surrounding wood. Fine Sanding: Using fine-grit sandpaper, emery cloth, or sanding block, lightly smooth the surface so that there are no drop-offs, or ledges, between sections of remaining finish and bare wood. Then wipe the entire surface with a damp, clean cloth to remove any remaining traces of dust and particles. Priming: Unless you are repainting a previously painted piece, you should prime the surface, particularly when bare wood has been exposed. In some cases, spot priming will do. Benjamin Moore’s Fresh Start Primers are an excellent choice.

High-quality latex paints are easy to apply, easy to clean up after, and create a smooth finish. When painted with care, they generally require no more than one coat. The type of finish will depend on whether your painted furniture will have a purely decorative function or a practical use. If the piece will be touched often, choose a protective gloss or semi-

gloss finish that can be easily wiped clean. Benjamin Moore’s Aura paint is ideal for these projects.

How to Paint Your Furniture

The actual painting is the simplest and easiest step in the process. First, paint the larger, flat surfaces. Start near a corner, but not on the very edge, and work outward, brushing with the grain. Be sure to not overload your brush with paint. If you want a thicker coat, let the first coat dry before repainting rather than using too much paint the first time. Continue by painting the edges and trim. If there is too much paint on the brush when you brush up to or over an edge, some of the paint might run over, so be especially careful and wipe any drips or overflow immediately with a clean, damp cloth. Finally, all that’s left to do is let it dry and enjoy the beautiful results!

MP BARRY DEVOLIN WORKING TO LESSEN IMPACT OF BUDGET CUTS ON TRENT SEVERN WATERWAY Local MP Barry Devolin says reducing the budget at Parks Canada by $29 million is imminent, however, how that is going to happen has not yet been determined. Mr. Devolin and his colleagues have asked Federal Minister Peter Kent if they can “slow down the process” in an effort to lessen the impact that cuts have on operations at theTrent Severn Waterway. “We told the Minister

we need more time to examine and discuss various options with our constituents and stakeholders to find solutions as to how we can best cut costs while minimizing impact,” Mr. Devolin said. He and Peterborough MP Dean Del Mastro as well as MPs from Simcoe North and Northumberland, met with Minister Kent earlier last week. “The Minister heard us and we’re currently working on solutions as to how we can best implement change. Unfortunately, nothing has been determined which

leaves everyone feeling uncertain and this causes a great deal of anxiety. We are working to develop solutions that will help us move through this period quickly.” Approximately two weeks ago Parks Canada announced it was facing $29 million in budget cuts. Details have not been revealed as to how and where the reductions will be implemented. “When you have to cut costs, you have to consider several factors. This could mean a reduction in operations in the shoulder seasons when fewer boats are going through the Trent system,” Mr. Devolin said. “We are also trying to identify other streams of revenue that will help to pay for services. There are ways to find solutions, and we’re certainly working on them.” Business owners in Bobcayeon and Fenelon

Falls among other areas, have expressed concerns about the possible reduction in operating hours at the Trent Waterway. However, Mr. Devolin has said for this year there will be no changes in May, June, July or August. Changes could come in September and October. “We are looking at the shoulder seasons - May/June and September/October, not the peak times which are in July and August – when there isn’t as much traffic and it would make sense to reduce operating costs.” Mr. Devolin said he’s well aware the City of Kawartha Lakes, with its five locks, has some of the busiest traffic in the entire Trent Severn system. But, he also pointed out that taxpayers fund 86 per cent of the locks’ operating costs, with boaters paying 14 per cent. “One possible solution would be to increase user fees,” said Mr. Devolin.

TOWNSHIP OF GALWAY-CAVENDISH & HARVEY

NOTICE OF COMPLETE APPLICATIONS CONCERNING AN APPLICATION FOR AN OFFICIAL PLAN AMENDMENT AND AN APPLICATION FOR A ZONING BY-LAW AMENDMENT TAKE NOTICE that the Council of the Corporation of the Township of Galway-Cavendish & Harvey has received a complete application for an amendment to the Official Plan of the Township of Galway-Cavendish & Harvey, and a complete application for an amendment to Zoning By-law No. 85-94, as amended, and is notifying the public in accordance with Sections 22 and 34 of the Planning Act. Location of the Subject Lands The proposed Official Plan Amendment and Zoning By-law Amendment apply to lands located in part of Lot 1, Concession 3, in the Geographic Township of Galway, in the Township of Galway-Cavendish & Harvey. The total area of the subject property is approximately 21.1 hectares (52.14 acres). The site fronts on the north side of Bass Lane. A Key Map is attached showing the location of the subject lands. Purpose and Effect of the Official Plan Amendment and the Zoning By-Law Amendment The subject lands are currently designated as “Rural” and “Aggregate Resource Extraction” in the Official Plan of the Township of Galway-Cavendish & Harvey. The purpose of the Official Plan Amendment is to change the land use designation on the south half of the subject lands from “Rural” to “Aggregate Resource Extraction,” so that the entire site will be designated as Aggregate Resource Extraction. The subject lands are currently zoned as “Rural (RU)” in By-law No. 85-94 of the Township of Galway-Cavendish & Harvey, as amended. The purpose of the Zoning By-law Amendment is to change the zoning on the subject lands to “Extractive Industrial (EI) Zone.” The proposed Official Plan Amendment and Zoning By-law Amendment are intended to permit the subject lands to be used for a licensed quarry operation under the provisions of the Aggregate Resources Act. The proposed quarry expansion is for a dimension stone quarry, class B (20,000 tonnes maximum production per annum), category 8, above the water table. This will be an expansion of an existing quarry operation that is located immediately to the east of the subject lands. Additional Applications Information available to the Township indicates that this property is not currently the subject of an application for a minor variance or consent, an amendment to a Minister’s zoning order, or for approval of a plan of subdivision. Representation A public meeting will be held to consider the proposed Official Plan Amendment and Zoning By-law Amendment. Notice of the public meeting, indicating the date, time and location of the meeting, will be given at a later date in accordance with the provisions of the Planning Act. Any person may attend the public meeting and make written and/or verbal representation either in support of or in opposition to the proposed Amendments. If a person or public body does not make oral submissions at a public meeting or make written submissions to the Township of Galway-Cavendish & Harvey before the proposed Official Plan Amendment is adopted or before the Zoning By-law is passed, the person or public body is not entitled to appeal the decision of the County of Peterborough (for the Official Plan Amendment) or the Council of the Township of Galway-Cavendish & Harvey (for the Zoning By-law Amendment) to the Ontario Municipal Board. If a person or public body does not make oral submissions at a public meeting, or make written submissions to the Township of Galway-Cavendish & Harvey before the proposed Official Plan Amendment is adopted or before the Zoning By-law is passed, the person or public body may not be added as a party to the hearing of an appeal before the Ontario Municipal Board unless, in the opinion of the Board, there are reasonable grounds to add the person or public body as a party. If you wish to be notified of the adoption of the proposed Official Plan Amendment, or of the refusal of a request to amend the Official Plan, or of the passing of the proposed Zoning By-law, you must make a written request to the Township of Galway-Cavendish & Harvey at the address given below. Information Additional information relating to the proposed Official Plan Amendment (OPA No. 42) and the Zoning By-law Amendment is available for inspection at the Township office during regular office hours. The notice of the public meeting for the proposed Amendments (to be given at a later date) will provide information on where and when copies of the proposed Amendments will be available to the public for inspection. Dated at the Township of Galway-Cavendish & Harvey this 27th day of April, 2012. Lois O’Neill, M.P.A., Clerk Township of Galway-Cavendish & Harvey 701 County Road No. 36 P.O. concerned about the health of our water and want to protect it. Over the last two decades, the Hopi, the Tibetans and the Kogi are the three Indigenous nations that have come together to begin the process of achieving balance. They carry with them the message “by living in accordance with natural law, we restore the natural balance of the Earth”. The purpose of the gathering is to motivate and influence all levels of government everywhere and all peoples individually to act and set policy that will protect our water, by leading with prayer and walking together.

HOUSE TOUR CELEBRATES 20th ANNIVERSARY

Highly anticipated by locals and visitors to the village, the Bobcaygeon Annual House Tour is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Last year, more than 300 visitors attended the event and organizers are hoping this number will increase in conjunction with monies raised for various charities. The Bobcaygeon Annual House Tour was founded 20 years ago by the women of Trinity United Church and Christ Church Anglican. This is a charitable event with proceeds going to such worthy organizations as Women’s Shelter (A Place Called Home) and the Local Food Bank. This year the House Tour takes place Saturday, June 16 from 1-5 p.m. The cost is $15 per person and includes tea and aweets. Entertainment and an Art Show, featuring talented local artists, will be held in the Trinity United Church Sanctuary, adding to the enjoyment of this special celebration year.

Five homes will be featured on the tour, including a home built in the 1850’s by a sea captain from Port Perry. There is a wonderful mix of traditional and contemporary, offering attendees a day filled with amazing architecture and inspiring decorating. A traditional bungalow that is anything but traditional, the home of designer Kerry Cook will be showcased on the tour. Kerry has gutted the main floor to accommodate her love of entertaining and according to tour organizers, the transformation is striking. The spacious country home of Jan and Lloyd McInroy, set on the shores of Pigeon Lake is also highlighted. The home features a spectacular view with Big Island being a focal point. The three main living areas are anchored by a double-sided, central fireplace, banked by large windows and doors. Tickets for the Bobcaygeon Annual House Tour are available at: My Favourite Things, Bobcaygeon Chamber of Commerce, Town & Country Decorating, Purdy’s Jewellery & Gems and Stokes-On-Trent in Fenelon Falls. HOW MUCH IS IT? by David Sparkes

Shopping has never been my favourite pastime but nowadays it seems to me it’s become an increasingly complex task. Gather round my friends, and we will explore this together. In the “good old days” you asked the price of something and received a straightforward answer. At least that’s how I remember it. These days however, a simple answer isn’t something you can count on. Now when you ask how much an item costs you are likely to get a far more confusing response. The price may depend on whether you have a coupon or some sort of membership which qualifies for a discount. You will probably be asked if you are collecting points or if you would like to take out a new credit card. Sometimes you may get a better price if you are a ‘senior’ but it only happens if it’s the second Tuesday in the month or Jupiter is aligned with Mars. Then they need to know if you want a bag for your purchase (even if it happens to be fresh fish). Are you starting to get my point? It isn’t easy being a shopper. Some of you may have travelled to parts of

the world where negotiating a price is standard procedure and the ritual is often accompanied by mint tea or something similar. It is one of the many lessons we can learn from foreign travel along with the conclusion the vendor usually comes out ahead. By the same token, buying a new or used car is an experience approached with caution by even the most self-confident shopper. In Canada the airlines, which are controlled federally, have been told they must now advertise the complete cost of the flights and discontinue advertising a fare which does not include taxes and extra charges which often amount to more than the fare itself. They will still try to add on extras for taking a second bag, reserving a seat, providing some food in flight or visiting their lounge. But at least there has

AWNINGS

been some progress. I’m telling you, it’s a jungle out there! Recently I received an e-mail from a wellknown company offering a television set for sale at an astounding price. So shocking it seems they could not show the price until you completed the process of ordering the merchandise! Only then, when you were a finger stroke away from increasing your credit card debt, would they reveal just how astounding the bargain truly was. Editorial comment seems superfluous. Which leads us to the whole world of shopping on the internet and all the many added complications. Daily offers for “group buys”, which depend on a certain number of participants, invade my inbox and try to convince me to buy something I had previously never even contemplated. Then there are the auction sites, some of which are simply scams it seems, plus the free advertisement sites for people who want to try their hand at selling direct. It’s a whole new world friends, and it changes daily, if not hourly. I look forward to the day when I can beat the system. Imagine standing at the cash desk while the salesperson totals up the sale price, extra discount for the day, senior discount, redemption of loyalty points and new credit card enrollment, eventually arriving at the net cost for the item you have purchased. With a smile, he or she tells you that they owe you $10 and takes a crisp ten dollar bill from the till. You ask if they will kindly add the HST to that. Dream on!

HOME INSPECTION

Ensuring safe, responsible wood heating Responsible wood heating starts with a safe, codecompliant installation of an advanced combustion wood stove, fireplace, furnace or boiler. Responsible user’s burn only seasoned firewood and use burn practices that result in little or no visible smoke. Most often homeowners ask about WETT because their insurance company has asked that they have their appliance WETT inspected. WETT stands for Wood Energy Technology Transfer and promotes the safe and effective use of wood burning systems in Canada Not sure what you’re looking for? A basic visual inspection is a general overview of the readily accessible parts to determine if the system meets current regulations. If this description fits your needs, any WETT certified member is trained to perform a basic visual inspection. If you need a more intensive inspection or an evaluation to determine system integrity, contact a WETT certified technician or chimney sweep. If your wood burning system is not functioning properly, is damaged or is causing problems such as smoke spillage or rapid creosote accumulation, you should contact a WETT certified technician or sweep.

Wood Safety Appliance, chimney and flue pipes need to be cleaned at least once a year or as required. More if you burn a lot of wood or if the appliance is not burning clean. Chimney fires usually occur because users don’t know how quickly the deposits develop and neglect to clean them. As required, keep combustibles at least 48 inches away from the front and 15 inches from the sides of the wood-burning appliance. Ashes should be stored in covered metal containers on non-combustible floors away from combustible material. A working carbon monoxide detector must be installed for your safety in the same room as the wood-burning appliance. A suitable fire extinguisher should be provided and be readily accessible. A working smoke alarm is required on every floor. To learn more about WETT and good information on burning safety visit their website www.wettinc. ca Bill Handley is an associate member with the Ontario Association of Home Inspectors and the Canadian Association of Home and Property Inspectors, offers Home Inspections and Wett Inspections in Kawartha Lakes, Peterbough County, Haliburton County and Durham Region. Market Watch KNOWN AS THE PIE FAIRY, PAM DRINKWALTER IS BUSY BAKING SUMPTUOUS GOODS FOR THE BOBCAYGEON FARMERS’ MARKET by Barb Khagram “Strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries thrive here. From these they make a wonderful dish combined with syrup and sugar, which is called ‘pai’. I can tell you that is something that glides easily down your throat; they also make the same sort of ‘pai’ out of apples or finely ground meat, with syrup added, and that is really the most superb.” - An immigrant living in Beloit, Wisconsin, wrote to friends back in Norway (November 29, 1851) Pam Drinkwalter, aka the Bobcaygeon Pie Fairy’, is looking forward to the up-coming season at the Bobcaygeon Farmers’ Market. Dubbed the Bobcaygeon Pie Fairy by one of her clients, Pam has been baking pies most of her life. Starting at the age of nine in her birthplace of Mission, BC, Pam helped her Mom with the baking on the family farm. Not only a great skill to learn, it helped to keep the six children in the family fed. Today, Pam bakes fruit pies at home while keeping a watchful eye on her grandson. Pam came to Bobcaygeon, via Alberta 30 years ago, where she met her husband Rick. Rick and his brother share farming chores on the family’s beef farm. Like many farmers, Rick needs to maintain a job off the farm to survive. In addition to his work on the farm, he’s a truck driver. Pam starts her baking on Fridays, the day before the market gets underway. She gets up at 4 am and bakes over 30 pies before her grandson wakes up. By 2 pm the pies are complete and

ready to be transported by van to the Bobcaygeon FarmersMarket. A variety of pies are made including black cherry, sour cherry, raspberry, blueberry, rhubarb, peach and apple. After she was written about in The Promoter, Pam’s black cherry filling pie rose steeply in popularity. In addition, Pam produces cream pies and lemon meringue to order. Chelsea bun rings, date squares and brownies are also favourites with customers. Pam enjoys the give and take at the Bobcaygeon FarmersMarket. Trading goods with other vendors is something she takes pleasure in as well as engaging and interacting with customers. Pam serves many local people, especially seniors, and she has a good number of tourists who stop by to purchase her delicious baked items. One couple even drives from Peterborough just to buy her wares. The Pie Fairy also has unbaked frozen pies on hand for people who prefer to bake their own. Pam Drinkwalter can be found at the Bobcaygeon FarmersMarket every week during the season from the May long weekend to Thanksgiving.

Roots & Ramblings CELEBRATING NATURAL BEAUTY by John Bick, Bobcaygeon & District Horticultural Society Now that the month of May has arrived, we can declare the Canadian spring has sprung and the time to get busy in the garden is now. Local garden centres, nurseries and farmers’ markets will soon be bursting with good product. Mother’s Day is an ideal time to patronize reputable, local florist shops. Caution: Do not buy flowering plants in full bloom. They may look picture-perfect now but they have been force-fed. In a few weeks they may disappoint you and you may find yourself replacing them. Planting perennials makes environmental sense. If planted in the appropriate spot (sun, shade or both), they will flourish year after year with no replacement. When planting, always read the instructions. The general rule of thumb is to dig a hole the same depth as the plant container. When transplanting seedlings such as tomatoes or peppers, the planting hole can be deeper and then back filled with lots of soil to provide support. The exceptions are peony and iris which prefer a shallow placement. They will not bloom as well if covered with too much soil. The Bobcaygeon and District Horticultural Society is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. A special exhibit on “90 Years of Bobcaygeon Horticulture” has been installed by our members in the Muir House at Kawartha Settlers’ Village. It

features gardening artifacts from the past, items with a floral theme and photographic displays of our public gardens. The exhibit will be there all year. The exhibit will also showcase some of our Notable Gardeners, past and present. While preparing the profiles of these gardeners, our research discovered that many, if not all of them, caught the “gardening bug” at an early age. Almost all of the people were raised in a gardening family where as youngsters they were inspired by an older brother, a grandmother or an adult neighbour. Many mentioned that it was their mother that transferred a love of gardening to them. Some were raised on farms where mothers traditionally tended the “kitchen garden” which often included a flower patch. Some were allowed to have their own kindergarden where they quickly learned by trial and error. One mother even taught her child the Latin names for the different plants. Some were fortunate to inherit heirloom plants from their family collections. As we salute mothers this month, let us also remember Mother Earth. We may plant the seeds and feed the soil but it is Nature that takes the stage after that. Take time from your labouring and listen to the Advice from a Wildflower which I have borrowed from Beryl Harris: “Show your true colours, Delight in simple pleasures, Celebrate your natural beauty, Open Up! Spread seeds of joy, Blossom in your own season, Be wild and wonderful.”

For two jam-packed days – Saturday, May 26 at 6 p.m. and Sunday, May 27 at 3 p.m. the International Professional Rodeo Association (IPRA), presented by the Rawhide Rodeo Company, will make the Lindsay Exhibition Fairgrounds a stop on the 2012 Professional Rodeo Season Series. Four countries will be represented at this professional rodeo including top hands from Brazil, the United States, Mexico and Canada, competing in the most dangerous sport, Bull Riding! All of the professional Cowboys and Cowgirls competing will be vying for coveted world championship points and tens of

thousands in prize monies. The top 15 Cowboys and Cowgirls of the IPRA rodeo series will qualify for the International Professional Rodeo Finals held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, next January. This event features Professional Rodeo Events, including Bareback Bronc Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, Bull Riding, Team Roping, Calf Roping, the Canadian Cow Girls and much more! Portions of the proceeds from this event will support Camp Maple Leaf. After great success last year, Rawhide Rodeo Company is partnering up with the Lindsay Agricultural Society’s 4th Annual All About Horses Show (www.lindsayex.com). This equine event is entertaining as well as educational and provides attendees with lots of opportunity to “get up close and personal” with horses and their owners. A wide variety of riding and driving demonstrations, and heavy and light breed displays will take place both days. Some of the more unusual breeds to be presented include the very beautiful Gypsy Vanner, Peruvian Paso, and Andalusian horses, to name just a few. Heavy horse hitches, including the Belgian, Clydesdale, Percheron, and Commercial horse breeds, will also be featured daily. Free horse-drawn wagon rides will provide transportation throughout the grounds, allowing attendees to experience the way we travelled years ago and save their feet at the same time. Again this year, the event will include an extensive trade show, showcasing the latest equine products and services such as tack, clothing for horse and rider, fencing, feed, trailers, jewellery, artwork and much more. With more than 40,000 square feet dedicated to equine related products, there is sure to be something for every shopper, horse-loving or otherwise. Rawhide Rodeo Company (www.rawhiderodeo. com) has been producing rodeos and rodeo related events for over twenty years. It has grown from a small professional rodeo company to one of the largest and most accredited in North America, now producing over 120 rodeo performances a year in over 15 states and provinces.

COOKING PROGRAM A HIT WITH STUDENTS IN FENELON For some students, it’s the fun of spinning lettuce, turning the crank of an old-fashioned apple peeler, or pressing cooked potato through a potato ricer. Others find joy in beautifully arranging a tray of raw vegetables. But no doubt about it, slicing and dicing with sharp knives keeps these budding chefs coming back each Monday.

40 May 4, 2012 - The Promoter

“What’s For Dinner?”—a cooking class for students in grades 6, 7 and 8—returned to St. James’ Anglican Church, Fenelon Falls, this spring, after a successful first run in 2011. So far, participants have made gnocchi, tomato sauce, “Stone Chile” (after the telling of the traditional folk tale), and apple pie, all from scratch. The program is entirely volunteer-run to keep costs low. Prominent chefs from the community also volunteer their time. Gloria Frewin, of Gloria Jean’s Fine Foods, shared her pie baking expertise on April 23. The Boathouse Restaurant’s Everol Powell will teach the students about “Flavour and Spice” in a few weeks. And local Fenelon Secondary School grad Codi Plummer, who spent the past year at the Canadian Food and Wine Institute of Niagara College, will demonstrate his knife skills next Monday as he shows the students how to make ratatouille. (...And éclairs.) “I think the kids love the sheer variety they encounter in cooking,” says program coordinator Diane Engelstad. “Everyone can find ways to develop their own skills and interests in the kitchen and then share their talents with others.” “What’s For Dinner?” runs till May 18, when the students serve a homemade meal to their families. This year’s program is full, but St. James’ hopes to run the program annually.

All About Your Health LIVE A LONGER, HEALTHIER LIFE WITH YOGA

by Heather Gowans

We have all felt the effect stress can have on our lives. It can be attributed to many of the health problems people suffer from. If you learn to quiet your mind with yoga, you are likely to live a longer and healthier life. Yoga is suitable for every level of ability, age, and physical condition. In my experience, I have found that children enjoy yoga because it’s fun to learn. It is particularly beneficial to people who are middle age and older. Yoga can be a gift to seniors, especially when their restorative power is declining and resistance to illness is weakened. Many people feel they can’t do yoga because they can’t get down on a mat on the floor. Chair Yoga is designed specifically for such people and allows them to experience the health benefits associated with the practise. To achieve good health, the joints, tissues, muscles, cells, nerves, glands and each system of the body must be in a state of perfect balance and harmony. Each of these areas of our bodies benefit from the practise of yoga. Yoga is a way of integrating movement and breath to strengthen, align and balance the body, focus the mind and recharge the nervous system. Asanas, or yoga postures, involve mindful, steady stretches, twists, bends and inversions that strengthen, align

and balance the body. Yoga asanas, while appearing to deal with the physical body alone, actually influence the chemical balance of the brain, which in turn improves one’s state of well- being. Pranayama, or control of the breath, encourages focusing on the present, relaxing, and slowing down the breath which shifts the nervous system to a restorative and calm state. A yoga practise typically ends with a restorative pose and various techniques to stimulate a deep whole body relaxation response. The mind is quiet,

the intellect is at peace, and the individual is serene and balanced. Practising yoga on a regular basis greatly improves strength, flexibility and balance without the threat of strain or injury. Some of the many benefits include regulated heart rate, reduced risk of heart attack and stroke, as well as preventing degenerative diseases. Yoga can also reduce weight, relieve depression, improve sleep, ease pain, and improve immune function. There’s no better time than now to get started and enjoy the benefits associated with yoga. FEATURING A SLEEKER DESIGN AND BETTER SOUND QUALITY - THIS IS NOT YOUR FATHER’S HEARING AID

I have memories of my Dad wincing as his hearing aid made a high pitched squeal. I remember the look of frustration on his face when he had to interrupt a conversation to take his hearing aid out and adjust it. Today’s hearing aids are not those of previous generations. Thanks to digital technology and powerful computer chips, modern hearing aids are smaller, have better sound quality and are more effective than ever before. Hearing aids usually fit in or behind the ear and amplify sound to make it easier for those with hearing loss to stay engaged with the world. They help people hear in both noisy and quiet environments. Today, most hearing aids are actually digital micro computers that adjust automatically, As a result, sounds remain audible and comfortable. Digital technology allows an audiologist to adapt a hearing aid to the specific needs of its wearer. With so many hearing clinics and hearing aid options available, the key to choosing the perfect aid for you coincides with working with an experienced audiologist who is willing to spend time with you to determine your preferences, expectations, hearing needs and budget. Audiologist Doran Hayes of Kawartha Hearing Care Inc. has over 25 years experience as a musician, digital audio specialist and sound engineer. Her comprehensive understanding of sound and sound shaping makes her an expert at programming more natural sounding hearing aids. In addition, she is dedicated to treating every client with respect, honesty, fair pricing and care. Come hear what all your friends have been talking about and join Kawartha Hearing Care for its annual Hearing Care Event, May 7-11, 2012. Space is limited. CHRONIC HEEL PAIN? CHIROPRACTIC CAN HELP

by Ian Horseman, DC, Village Chiropractic State-of-the-art Chiropractic technology can help in the treatment of Plantar Fasciitis a painful, chronic condition affecting the sole or arch of the foot Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the plantar fascia (also called “fasciitis”). The plantar tissue is the “bowstring-like” ligamentous tissue in the sole or arch of the foot stretching from the heel to the front of the foot. This condition is typically characterized by a painful, inflammatory process of the foot area. Because of the pain and inflammation, most people find it difficult to walk, especially in the morning upon arising from bed. Longstanding cases of plantar fasciitis can demonstrate more degenerative changes than inflammatory changes, which would be termed plantar fasciosis. How can Chiropractic Help with Plantar Fasciitis? Chiropractic physicians are trained to evaluate foot alignment and to adjust the bones of your ankle, foot and toes. Ask your chiropractor to look at your feet, your shoes, and how you stand, walk, and run. Even misalignment of the hips and knees can trigger or complicate the symptoms of plantar fasciitis. Your chiropractor can evaluate these areas of the bony structures as well. Stretching your plantar fasciitis is something you can do at home to relieve pain and speed healing. Ice massage performed three to four times per day in 15 to 20 minute intervals is also something you can do to reduce inflammation and pain. Placing arch supports in your shoes absorbs shock and takes pressure off the plantar fascia. Chiropractors are trained to help you with proper foot supports, made exclusively for your feet. In addition to adding these home therapies to help resolve your condition and maximize your results from the chiropractic care, there are even natural supplements that can help reduce pain and

inflammation while the body is healing. Your chiropractor can advise you in all these adjunctive relieving approaches. Shockwave Therapy is an effective modality that helps treat pathologies which cause pain and dysfunction, including plantar faciitis. This revolutionary new method provides nonsurgical treatments of conditions that historically could only be

resolved via surgical intervention. State-of-the-art, this therapy can be used to treat a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions, in particular, those involving areas where major connective tissue attaches to bone. Common sites that can been successfully treated are: • Foot - plantar fasciitis & Achilles tendonitis • Knee - patellar tendinitis

• Accelerates healing • Very effective for chronic conditions How does Shockwave work? Shockwaves accelerate the healing process by activating the body’s self-healing powers, particularly in cases where the body has been unable to do it on its’ own. In essence it acts as a ‘kickstart’ to stimulate the metabolism and enhance blood circulation. This enables the damaged tissue to regenerate and eventully heal. Shockwaves are applied via a light handpiece that is easy to use, which produces a very strong pulses break the sound barrier and creates shockwaves. The shockwaves are directed at the site of the lesions in a controlled and focused manner. Shockwaves have a mechanical effect on the tissue. As the pressure front of the wave is transmitted to the tissue, it creates cavitation bubbles that expand and burst, creating a resultant force. The force penetrates through the skin to stimulate cells in the body which are responsible for bone (osteoblast) and connective tissue (fibroblast) healing. Research has also shown that Shockwave can also breaks down calcium deposits. What is the success rate? After only 3 sessions, over 80% of patients report painlessness or significant pain reduction. This pain reduction/elimination leads to restoration of full mobility and thus improving quality of life. • 90% improvement for plantar fasciitis Journal of Orthopaedics Research 2005 • 91% improvement for calcific tendonitis Journal of American Medical Association 2003 • 77% improvement for tennis elbow Journal of Orthopaedics 2005 How long does treatment last? The therapy session takes about 15 minutes depending on the disorder that is treated. In general, 3-5 sessions are necessary at weekly intervals. For more information on chronic conditions that can be treated with Shockwave, contact www. postureclinic.net or Village Chiropractic at 705738-5600
