FROM MY PERCH

Once again, Paris has been the scene of a frightening series of attacks by people identifying themselves as members of ISIS (the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, aka ISIL or IS). The attackers killed 130 people on Friday, Nov. 13, and the result seems to be a ramping up of fearful anti-Muslim sentiment again throughout the West— along with a backlash here against bringing in Syrian refugees. That’s just what ISIS wants. It seems very unlikely, however, for terrorists to use the refugee process to enter Canada. They would have to sit for years in refugee camps, while being endlessly documented, screened and scrutinized—then hope they are among the less than one percent chosen. All those involved in the Paris attacks seem to have been European passport holders, who can simply arrive here by commercial flight without even needing a visa—the way the rest of us go to Europe.

There are some other points to keep in mind: • ISIS has murdered over 10,000 Muslims in two years, so Muslims have good reason to be anti-ISIS. • Less than two percent of all global terror attacks are done in the name of Islam. • The combined forces of ISIS, Boko Haram and Al-Qaeda amount to one person per 33,000 among the global Muslim population of 1.6 billion. If Islam really bred terror, we’d all be dead by now. Another way to look at it is to realize that ISIS is to Islam as the Ku Klux Klan is to Christianity. Now is a good time to recall—and try our best to live by—the last words of NDP leader, Jack Layton, who died of cancer in the summer of 2011. On his deathbed, he said: “My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.”

Fear extra fire response times

In the recent weeks the entire City of Kawartha Lakes has heard about fire halls closing to save $3 million within a $10 million shortfall. Fire Chief Mark Pankhurst has said that “safety is our numberone concern and priority,” and “these changes reflect best practices and ensure we have the best resources in the best possible locations.” How can they say safety is their numberone concern if they don’t consult members of the communities and surrounding fire halls? Within the last two weeks the petition to stop the closure of the Baddow Fire Department has generated almost 600 signatures, while the Facebook group is at well over 800 members and growing. A lot of seasonal cottagers have no idea this decision has been put through because they’ve left for the season. A lot of people might call that sneaky politics. In September, Pankhurst publicly said it was his job “to ensure that standards and response are maintained.” He also said public consultation would be the most important part of the process before any changes take place. So here we are again, taking away another lifeline when help is needed. The mayor, council and fire chief have neglected to really look at the facts around these fire halls. You have about 10,000 extra people in these areas from tourism. Everyone knows it can be a nightmare to get across the Fenelon bridge in the summertime. You are adding extra response time to the fire stations with these amalgamated halls. You can’t predict the weather, traffic, or accidents that will delay response times. Fire halls can have more than one call to their response area, and not enough people to cover them. The chances of loss will be greater now with the amalgamation and closures. We elected the mayor and the council to represent our communities. Our Ward 3 Councillor Gord Miller moved the decision for the amalgamation, and Ward 11 Councillor Patrick O’Reilly seconded it.

When hockey leads to verbal abuse

What comes to mind when you hear someone yell “CAR?” I imagine a crisp fall day. I imagine a group of young hockey players playing “game seven of the Stanley Cup finals” on the road in front of their houses. I imagine two goalies gripping the nets with their baseball gloves and dragging them aside to let a car squeeze by. I imagine a driver grinning with envy, wishing he could be out there playing too. With “screen time” taking away so much “playtime,” I really enjoy seeing kids playing outside. I encourage my kids to get outside. It thrills me when my 10 year old, who is on the ice playing hockey three or four times a week, wants to get out and play road hockey on his off day. Unfortunately our street (Bobcaygeon’s King Street west) is much too busy for road hockey. When the nearby parking lot is full, that only leaves our driveway. That’s okay. Less space means you need to work harder to keep control of the ball. You know the one: orange, rubber, and hurts like heck when its frozen. Well, on this day, it’s a sunny, balmy 10 degrees. Just like in the rinks where pucks go over the boards, the ball gets away sometimes and bounces onto the road. Normally it hits the curb on the other side, sometimes rolling right back to where it came from. Sometimes it bounces and hits a passing tire or a bumper, or heaven forbid, a passing fender or a grill. Usually, it’s not a big deal. Well, on this day it was a big deal. The ball got away, bounced on the road and hit a passing car. I had to apologize to the woman who had to stop her car. I had to apologize to the woman who

A Thank You to all the book lovers who supported The Boyd Heritage Museum’s “Save Boyd Island” Book Sale. We met our goal.

Most fire halls in Kawartha Lakes are volunteer departments. All fire fighters have been awakened at 2 am for medical calls, and wouldn’t think twice about it. They are guarding their friends and neighbours in their time of need. They don’t think twice about running into a burning building to save someone’s life. Don’t take that first response away from these communities. What happened to our public consultation meetings that Pankhurst promised us?

TL council not insuring volunteers?

Trent Lakes is the best little municipality in Ontario. Or it was until the new council took control. It appears they only represent one corner of Trent Lakes. Most votes, I notice, are four-to-one. That bothers me, but it is not my real concern. I am concerned that this council has devalued the many volunteers in the community. They have stopped insuring these volunteers, and have asked them to buy their own insurance. I can understand not covering liquor sales in their blanket policy. The party that chooses to have alcohol served can get their own insurance. It will mean the local volunteer bar tenders will have to obtain their own insurance or perhaps just not work the bar. I don’t know what they are trying to prove, but a local lawyer told me the municipality is responsible for any accidents on its property. It was also said that any liquor violations would come back on the owner of the property. The last time I looked, the three community centres are the property of the municipality, which will just have to pay out of operating money and also pay lawyers when it gets sued. Doesn’t make much sense to me. I would think it costs more that way. Council has contributed taxpayer money to the Boyd Island project. Will that make them part owners of the new park? If so they better make sure they have insurance for the island. I also notice they have asked the Kawartha Conservation Authority to do a partial lake plan, this surprises me as the new mayor was against the conservation authority doing anything in Trent Lakes. I also notice the Blue Canoe project is getting involved in the municipality. That’s a good thing. I hope the residents on the lakes listen and follow this group’s suggested advice. Most municipalities value their volunteers, but this one seems to think it can operate without

them. Remember, we are one municipality and all should be treated the same. What is the saving by cancelling the volunteer insurance? It’s probably less than $10,000.

Getting our share of public transit funds A Nov. 12 Globe and Mail article revealed the provincial government has issued nearly $333 million to municipalities strictly for expansion of public transit. Almost $292 million went to Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Ottawa, Hamilton, Waterloo, London, Windsor, St. Catharines and York and Durham regions, leaving about $41 million for the rest. I’m not sure where we would rank, but there should be some public transportation funds available

to the fast-growing City of Kawartha Lakes. It’s time CKL gets a grip on the fact that major growth is right around the corner. Astute planning for the maximum value of any Rural Public Transit infrastructure funds should include taking complete ownership of such an operation in every phase—not just a “rent-a-bus”. Think about it: • Lindsay has recently completed the muchneeded northwest trunk sewer line to facilitate future growth. I expect housing, retail, industrial, recreations and hotel plans are already in the works. • The Highway 407 extension, built with infrastructure money, will soon be opened, linking up with Highway 35 and creating easier access from the Greater Toronto Area. • The Global Television morning program gave us millions of dollars of free advertising last July when it broadcast from CKL. Add all these positives together and you have a very healthy real estate market. The Kawartha Lakes Real Estate Association reports that year-to-date home sales are 20 percent above last year and on pace to make the strongest real estate year ever. Get your ducks in a row, CKL. The inevitable is now on your doorstep. Ted Howes Lindsay

Kawartha Lakes Roundup

SHUFFLING FIRE STATIONS TO SAVE $3 MILL: The city says it could save nearly $3 million after council approved reorganizing its 21 fire stations. Fire Chief Mark Pankhurst assured council that “through consolidation, industry standards will be maintained and the provision of sustainable, enhanced, cost-effective services and programs will be continued.” District three, in the northeast area, will see a consolidation of the existing three stations to two. Beginning in 2016, fire service will transition from the Baddow Fire Hall to Fenelon Falls and Coboconk, with backup from Burnt River. One new fire hall will replace two stations—in Little Britain and Oakwood—by 2019. A new single-truck station will replace the aging Bethany station. LIBRARY EXPANSION MAY BE AXED: A proposed $720,000 project to expand and upgrade the Bobcaygeon library is on the chopping block as council struggles to bring down a worst-casescenario 12 percent tax hike for 2016. Cutting the project, although keeping $270,000 for accessibility upgrades, is a “high-level recommendation” from staff. Council will hear a presentation on library services from the library board on Dec. 1, and is expected to make a final decision on the project on Dec. 8. GIFT FROM THE PROVINCE: The city’s budget suddenly looks $1 million sweeter with news it will receive $7,038,500 from the Ontario Municipal

Partnership Fund in 2016—instead of the $6 million it had expected. Support from the fund has been trending downwards over several years, and was set at $6.8 million for 2015, so staff had estimated they would receive about $6 million this year in making budget projections. ERT KAIBOSHES WIND FARM: Ward 16 Councillor Heather Stauble was literally dancing with joy last week over news that the province’s Environmental Review Tribunal had ruled that parts of the proposed Settlers Ridge Wind Project “will cause serious and irreversible harm to plant life, animal life or the natural environment as defined by the Environmental Protection Act.” Stauble said this is only the second time the ERT has ruled against this type of project in an appeal. The surprise decision was issued Nov. 19, well in advance of the anticipated Dec. 7 date. The wind farm company may appeal the ruling, or offer “remedies” to the concerns. ACTING DIRECTORS MADE PERMANENT: CAO Ron Taylor has announced the appointment of Bryan Robinson to the full-time position of Director of Public Works, while Juan Rojas will assume the position of Director of Engineering and Assets effective January 1, 2016. Both have been serving in acting director roles since earlier this summer. Mr. Rojas will continue as acting Director of Development Services until the end of the year. FREE PARKING IN LINDSAY: Kawartha Lakes moves to free, timed parking in downtown Lindsay. All parking meters and Pay and Display machines in the downtown core are being removed this

month. Beginning in 2016, the city will implement a monitored system that will allow parking on any downtown street for up to two hours, and up to four hours in municipal lots. Permits for longer parking in municipal lots will continue to be offered at $46 per month, with daily and weekly permit options as well. BUT NOT OVERNIGHT: Winter snows mean parking is not allowed on City streets and in municipal lots between 11 pm and 6 am from Nov. 1 to April 30, 2016. “We know that snow clearing is important to our residents and the parking restriction during the winter months allows our snow plows to get through and clear the roads without obstructions before morning travelers get on their way,” says Rod Porter, East Maintenance Area Manager.

A trend emerged at Kawartha Lakes city council’s special strategic planning session in Fenelon Falls Nov.19, when council agreed with surprising ease to scrub the words “sustainable” and “green” from the latest draft of the city’s strategic planning document. As it stands now, the third of three major goals for the city is no longer “A Healthy and Sustainable Environment,” but just “A Healthy Environment.” Goals one and two remain: “A Vibrant and Growing Economy,” and “An Exceptional Quality of Life.” Ward 16 Councillor Heather Stauble asked to have the word, “sustainable” removed from the goal statement. She said she feared including the word would open the door to more applications for wind farms and solar farms, which this council seems to oppose on principle. Similarly, she also suggested that Objective

Have you heard BOB lately? BOB listened to you!

3.1 be revised from “A cleaner, greener, more sustainable community” to “a cleaner community.” Shortly afterwards, Ward 10 Councillor Pat Dunn, who had spoken in favour of removing the words sustainable and green too, also suggested removing commitments to implement recommendations in lake management plans and to support “more public art.” Although these changes may seem mere wordsmithing, they do indicate a change in direction and emphasis. It seems a long way from 2002, when the tag line on the still-new city’s strategic plan was “Environment First,” and may indicate that this council is feeling very much under the fiscal gun. Consultant and meeting facilitator Karen Wianecki said both council and staff should be using this document, once finalized, as a “road map” and a “compass” in all decisions they take for the direction of the city’s development. When Wianecki took a “straw vote” on which of 30 or so actions council members felt should get priority, among the top were comprehensive economic development, marketing and communications strategies, the Core Services Review, five- and 10-year budget strategies, the website, fiscally responsible service delivery, and an asset management plan. Environmental concerns, like integrated waste management, low-impact-development standards, and the Green City Charter, garnered no support. The only environmental actions to get some support included protecting drinking water sources and agricultural land, and managing aggregate resources.

Business excellence

Home manufacturer, 1867 Confederation Log & Timber Frame, is one of only two finalists for the 2015 Sustainability Award, given as part of the province-wide Ontario Business Achievement Awards. Winner was to be announced Nov. 25. “We have always tried to be a green business,” Confederation President Rick Kinsman told The Kawartha Promoter. “It’s nice to be recognized.” Confederation uses pine logs and spruce wall studs sustainably harvested in Ontario (as certified by the Forest Stewardship Council), and has almost zero waste, as offcuts from the work are repurposed as boat blocks, for home heating and “even the sawdust is reused by a local farmer.” Confederation is located on County Road 36 about two kms northeast of Bobcaygeon.

Our own ‘Black Friday’

Bobcaygeon businesses will kick off the Christmas shopping season with a “Black Friday” promotion this Friday, Nov. 27. Kawartha Lakes Mayor Andy Letham will light the tree, accompanied by councillors Brian Junkin and Kathleen Seymour - Fagan. Many retailers and restaurants will stay open til 9 pm on Friday, with special deals all weekend.

Santa Claus is booked solid

Santa Claus has a busy stretch ahead of him in the next few weeks, even just in the Kawarthas. Good thing he’s the original superhero. FENELON FALLS: Santa has a whole day named after himself with Fenelon Santa Day this Saturday, Nov. 28. The all-day event offers: Santa’s House, from 11 am to 4 pm with a free gift for every child and a free photo with Santa himself; Christmas-time stories at the library; the original St. Nicholas at St. James Anglican Church from 10 am to 6 pm; “Frozen” photos with Olaf, Elsa, Anna, Sven and the Snowflake Palace; pony and wagon rides; gingerbread contest; hand-bell choir; petting zoos; face painting; chainsaw carving; clowns; a magic show; and popcorn. Santa will headline his own parade, which starts at 5 pm at West and Lindsay Streets (by Home Hardware) and crosses over the falls, continuing up Colborne Street, to the ball diamonds. You’re sure to enjoy the marching bands, creative and amazing floats, dancers, local businesses, and volunteers, at this night-time parade and firework display. KINMOUNT: It starts Saturday, Dec. 5 in Kinmount at the community’s annual “Christmas in the Village.” Old St. Nick will be on hand first thing in the morning at St. James Anglican Church for a free Breakfast with Santa from 8:30-11 am. You can meet Santa again at the post office at 2 pm and follow him on a parade through the village to the Legion, where kids can meet with him and get their picture taken. And everyone can enjoy a free Family Lunch, with gifts for kids 10 and under. Fill in the time between at the Community Centre where you’ll find the Farmer’s Market and “Crafts for Kids,” from 10 am to 2 pm. Or take part in the “Kinny Elf Hunt” around the village with prizes for kids at each location. For adults, the day tops off with a Christmas Celtic Music Night at Galway Hall with the amazing Bancroft-based family band, Everything Fitz. Enjoy desserts and a Christmas Loonie Auction. Call 705-488-2635 for tickets at $15. Or find more information at kinmount.ca. WOODVILLE: The next day, Sunday, Dec. 6, finds Santa hosting a breakfast at the Woodville and District Legion, from 8-11 am.

14 November 27, 2015 - The Kawartha Promoter

COBOCONK: Then Santa has to hustle off to Coby, where that village’s Santa Claus parade kicks off at 1 pm (also on Sunday, Dec. 6), with some terrific bands, fun floats, and of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus. Floats will meet at the Civitan Club parking lot at noon, and the parade will start from there and process along Highway 35 through Coboconk before turning into the Legion parking lot. Get there early to get a good spot on the main street. After the parade, gather at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 519 for a light snack for the kids, carols, gifts, and a photo with the one and only Santa Claus, all free of charge. Donations will be accepted at the door to help cover the cost of next year’s parade, and don’t forget to bring non-perishable food items for collection along the parade route for the Coboconk Food Bank. Contact Jennifer at 705-454-1110 for more information or to register your float. All floats are welcome. BOBCAYGEON: The theme will be Toy Story, when Father Christmas, as he is also known, joins the annual Kinettes Santa Claus parade in Bobcaygeon at 5 pm on Saturday, Dec. 12. The parade starts at Kawartha Dairy and proceeds through the village along Joseph, Main, Bolton and King Streets to the Legion Hall. There’ll be lots of floats and bands all lit up for

the evening event, with the village decked out with boughs of holly (or other Christmas greenery and lights). And don’t forget the Shriners. The Kinettes will be collecting toy donations during the parade as well, so be sure to bring something along. If you want to enter a float and haven’t already done so, contact Shirley Grills at 705-731-7998, or show up at the mustering point on Head Street by Kawartha Dairy no later than 4:15. There will be cash prizes for the three best floats. Santa will hit Bobcaygeon earlier that day, though, when he welcomes kids of all ages to the Kinettes Santa’s Breakfast from 8:30-11 that morning at the Lions Hall. Breakfast is $4 for adults, with kids 12 and under free—and the Kinettes invite you to bring a food donation for the Bobcaygeon Food Bank. You can also have your picture taken with Santa himself, and have it emailed to you (Old St. Nick goes digital). And finally, the Bobcaygeon Legion offers a Christmas Elvis Tribute Dinner show on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 6 pm with John and Mason Cigan.

Olde Towne Christmas offers Fenelon’s festive best

Fenelon Falls will be transformed into a festive wonderland as downtown shops compete for the best Christmas lights display during Olde Towne Christmas—a free, family-friendly event running December 10-12. Olde Towne Christmas is set to run from 5-9 pm on Thursday, Dec. 10 and Friday, Dec. 11—and during regular store hours on Saturday, Dec. 12. The festive event’s two “Headquarters” are The Little Pie Shack (free coffee or hot chocolate, with cookies) and The Kawartha Store (hot apple cider and free giftwrapping). Shoppers throughout the village will be entered in the draw to win $200, $100 and $50 gift vouchers. Dock Side Restaurant will be running a special half price appetizer menu to get everyone into the festive mood. Smoke and Tuck, a beautiful team of Percheron draft horses, will be harnessed up to give everyone wagon rides. A wandering magician will perform Thursday. “Olde Towne Christmas is a wonderful event to get everyone in the Christmas shopping mood,” says organizer Trish Dougherty, owner of The Kawartha Store.

Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) Time to batten down the hatches, Aquarius. Get ready for those wintry winds and snowy skies. Just be sure to get outside and enjoy this great season, too though. It’s no fun being cooped up all the time. Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) Fear can paralyze us if we let it, Pisces. Apparently, when electricity was installed in the White House, the U.S. president was so intimidated he wouldn’t dare touch the switches—and had to sleep with the lights on. Fear and anxiety are normal, and we can learn from them. They are so often fantasies rather than fact—so focus on the facts.

Cancer (June 23 to July 23) Most people don’t equate the cold winter season with romance, do they Cancer? But that doesn’t mean it can’t happen. Be careful—it might just be nipping at your heels. Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) There are always ups and downs in life, dear Leo. You’ve figured that out before this. So don’t let the latest “down” plummet you any further. You’ve come too far to slip back now. Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) Laughter truly is one of the best medicines. So don’t take things too personally, Virgo. Look for some merriment in every situation—even when the joke’s on you. Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) Sometimes there are mean, nasty people out there, Libra, who hurt us. The tendency then is to hide ourselves away. Don’t. You are so much better than they are. You have so much more to give.

Aries (March 21 to April 20) Travel plans are in the future for you Aries—and it’s a great time of year to travel. Why not go somewhere you’ve never been before? Make it a vacation and a super adventure.

Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) You cannot do everything that needs to be done today. So stop panicking. Time will take care of the necessities, Scorpio. The important things will get done. The others? Who cares.

Taurus (April 21 to May 21) It’s that time of year again. It does to seem to creep up on us, Taurus. The holiday season is always a good time to rethink our values; concentrate on family and friends; and try not to get caught up in the hurly-burly.

Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) “Be like the flower, turn your face to the sun”—Kahlil Gibran. Yes, dear Sag, turn your face to the cheerful light that gives you power and energy. Soak up its warmth. In other words, look on the bright side.

Gemini (May 22 to June 22) We sense you’ve been “holding back” a bit these days, Gemini. Don’t be afraid to stretch a little. Move beyond the confines and try something new. A lovely surprise awaits you.

Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) We admire your ability to stand up for others, even when it seems you’re on the “out” side of popular opinion, and the costs are steep. Keep believing in yourself, Capricorn.

An auction and fundraising event at Bobcaygeon’s Donatella Restaurant on Sunday Nov. 22, raised over $22,000 (including $14,000 in new pledges. The Kawartha Land Trust office in Peterborough is gearing up for a flood of last-minute-phone and on-line pledges next week. To make a pledge or donation go to kawarthalandtrust.org, or call 705-743-5599.

Kawartha Dairy gives for Boyd Island

By Glenna Burns

Kawartha Dairy is one of the latest local businesses to step up and support the Save Boyd Island campaign, with a pledge of $10,000. The Crowe family has also provided an additional donation—of unnamed amount but described by Kawartha Land Trust executive director Mike Hendren as “very generous”—in memory of Kawartha Dairy founders, Jack and Ila Crowe. The total raised or pledged for the campaign as of Nov. 23 was $872,883. Other donations have come in from as far away as Australia, as former Caygeonites learn about the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to leave such a beautiful legacy to future generations. The final push is now on to raise $1 million before Nov. 30, to preserve beautiful Boyd (Big) Island in the heart of Pigeon Lake.

One of Bobcaygeon’s most famous sons, Linwood Barclay, has weighed in to support protecting and preserving Boyd Island. “When I was a kid growing up on Pigeon Lake,” says Barclay in a written statement to Kawartha Land Trust, “Boyd Island was a world away from all the nearby cottages and resorts.” It was, he adds, “a place to catch fish and frogs, explore, and where, anchored off its shore one night on a cabin cruiser, (I saw) the Northern Lights for the first time.” “Boyd Island should be that one spot in the Kawarthas untouched by development,” Barclay concludes. “Let it exist as it did before any human being set foot on it.” Barclay, an internationally known mystery writer, grew up south of Bobcaygeon, where his family ran the Green Acres trailer resort. He became a journalist, including writing a humour column for The Toronto Star, and later penned a memoir about his trailer-park years called, The Last Resort—before finding his greatest success writing mysteries. Perhaps we should note that Boyd Island, although now a beautiful wilderness area right on our doorstep, has been much altered by human activity, including thousands of years of sustainable First Nations use, and logging and cattle grazing by Boyd family enterprises.

Refugee family awaiting clearance

By Sue Pepper

The Bobcaygeon and Area Refugee Committee (BARC) now has a refugee family—who have been living in a camp in Lebanon for about two years after fleeing Syria. We chose this family from a long list because urgency was classified as high. They—and all refugees in the camp—have already been screened by the United Nations. The father is 40, and the mother is 32. There are three children under 5 (two girls, one boy). Our family is now awaiting medical and security clearance by Canada. That could be done very soon. We’ll get more particulars after clearances are complete. Now we are asking you to consider donating to BARC. We need to raise at least $20,000 before the family can come. We’ve already raised approximately 35 percent ($7,000). To receive a charitable receipt, make your cheque out to Trinity United Church, with BARC specified in the memo line. Your total donation will go towards helping this family. Drop cheques off at Pick ‘n Save and Trinity United Church in Bobcaygeon, Sweet Bottoms Café in Fenelon Falls, and Mum’s Mini Mart in Dunsford. Drop off cash donations over $10 in an envelope with your information on it, at Trinity United Church,

44 William St., Bobcaygeon (9 am to 1 pm). Trinity will issue receipts for donations over $10. Look for our change cans at local merchants. What a great holiday gift to yourself or others. We still need help with housing. We have a few leads, but nothing concrete yet. Follow us on Facebook (search “Bobcaygeon and Area Refugee Sponsorship”)—call Carol Young at 705-738-0267, or email Sue Pepper at suejpepper@yahoo.ca. Help spread the word. BARC will also participate in a “Welcoming Refugees” session in the “Getting Ready for Christmas” study at Fenelon Falls United Church, 123 Colborne St., on Tuesday, Dec. 1, from 1011:30 am. Contact Rev. Rodney at 738-5136 or Rev. Karen at 738-3040 for more information.

Boughs for BARC

Gamiing Nature Centre has truckloads of fresh pine boughs for sale for Christmas—with proceeds to help the Bobcaygeon and Area Refugee Committee (BARC) resettle a Syrian refugee family here. Fleming students recently thinned out the pine forest at Gamiing, and the Bobcaygeon Baden Powel Scout Troupe is putting the pine boughs together into bundles that will sell for $10. The fragrant pine boughs will be available for purchase in the parking lot of the Gamiing Nature Centre, 1884 Pigeon Lake Rd., from 11 am to 3 pm on Saturday, Nov. 28.

Trinity offers light for dark Christmas memories

“A Light in the Darkness” is Trinity United Church’s gift to you of time for quiet reflection and meditation away from pre-Christmas pressures and busyness. The service, at 7:30 pm on Monday, Dec. 7, is an opportunity to remember loved ones lost, broken relationships, a job loss, or even dreams and hopes that remain unfulfilled. But equally important, it is also a time to experience again the hope that Christ’s light offers to each one of us in our times of darkness.

Caygeonites cram the cruiser, times four

Generous donors filled an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) cruiser four times over with food on Saturday, Nov. 14, at Strang’s Valu-mart in Bobcaygeon. They also gave a total of $940 in cash, and filled an OPP trailer with donated coats, snow pants, mitts, hats and blankets, taken to Lindsay Dry Cleaners who cleaned the items at no cost, to distribute to those in need. OPP Auxiliary unit members volunteered on Saturday to support this worthwhile cause.

People who have donations they still want to make can Cram the Cruiser again on Saturday, Dec. 12, at the Sobey’s in Fenelon Falls.

Arson answers Paris hate with hate

The terrorism that left more than 120 dead in Paris two weeks ago echoed in the Kawartha region just days later. But this time the direct victims were the local Muslim community as terrorists set fire to the Kawartha Muslim Religious Association’s mosque in Peterborough. Indirectly, we are all victims of this sectarian violence when it brings fear right into our homes Peterburgers and other Canadians rose to the occasion, though, and within 24 hours had donated approximately $100,000—more than enough to repair the damage. Days later, Peterborough-Kawartha MP and new Minister of Democratic Institutions, Maryam Monsef, joined two other ministers in condemning “the reprehensible acts of hatred and racism that have occurred in Canada since last week’s terrorist attacks in Paris.” Pointing out that “diversity is Canada’s strength,” the three cabinet ministers called on Canadians to “denounce acts of violence that attempt to solve hate with hate.” They said “the perpetrators of the violence in Paris must be brought to justice, not rewarded with a lessening of our commitments to tolerance, inclusion, and compassion.” Meanwhile, Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock MP Jamie Schmale wants his constituents to sign a petition asking the government, in light of the Paris atacks, to reconsider its timeline to admit 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada by the end of the year. “I understand that this is a campaign promise and the government is trying to honour that,” said Schmale. “However, in my opinion, the world changed last week and I don’t think any Canadian would blame the Prime Minister for making adjustments to his original timeline.”

Merry Christmas

And Dr. Millson makes four

Dr. Laura Millson will replace Dr. Sheila Mae Young on her retirement by accepting care for all the patients in the practice, effective Jan. 1, 2016. Millson is the fourth doctor recruited this year by the Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI) and City of Kawartha Lakes Family Health Team. She will join the doctors of the City of Kawartha Lakes Family Health Team, working with the team’s nurse practitioners, family health nurses, dietician, pharmacists, psychologist, clinical social workers, occupational therapist and respiratory therapist. Millson has a Bachelor of Medical Sciences from the University of Western Ontario with an honours specialization in physiology, and a minor in psychology. She received her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Toronto and completed her Family Medicine Residency at Queen’s University (Peterborough-Kawartha site). Her family lives in a nearby community, which makes the City of Kawartha Lakes a perfect match for her—and she has purchased her first home in CKL. “Thank you for welcoming me into your community. I’m looking forward to living and working in the City of Kawartha Lakes for many years to come.” “I am very pleased that Dr. Millson has agreed

New program WILL brings defibrillators to your home

By Pat Warren

A new program will put AEDs (Automatic External Defibrillators) in pre-approved cardiac patients’ homes in the City of Kawartha Lakes. City paramedic Autumn Campbell explained the first-ofits-kind in Ontario, life-saving initiative to council Nov. 17. Kawartha Lakes already has 200 PADs (Public Access Defibrillators) in public buildings and private businesses throughout the city. These compact, easyto-use devices are used to shock the heart back into a normal rhythm, and will only do so when there is no heartbeat, or an irregular beat that needs to be shocked. The AEDs will be for cardiac patients who have had a cardiac incident and are waiting to have an internal defibrillator device implanted. The internal devices help regularize heart rhythms. The partnership between The Ross Memorial Hospital and Kawartha Lakes Paramedic Service is only for patients that are part of the Ross Outpatient Heart Failure program. The client also needs someone at home to be trained to use the device. Friends can be trained as well. Campbell pointed out that 80 percent of heart attacks happen at home, and Kawartha Lakes is rural in nature with many seniors. She also said the in-home program could improve cardiac outcomes by 75 percent.

For many of us, the holidays bring opportunities to spend extra time with family and friends, going to parties and enjoying special gatherings. But for those with a hearing loss, these celebrations may be difficult to enjoy. There are many ways you can help to make communication easier and reduce the feelings of frustration and isolation that can sometimes accompany hearing loss. • Be sure you have the person’s attention before you begin to speak. • Eye contact is important. Look directly at the person you are speaking with. • Speak normally and clearly and do not speak too loudly or quickly. • Reword your sentence if the person does not understand what you are saying. • Be aware of competing noises such as music and laughter. Bully for you—NOT

Three out of four people have been affected by bullying, according to statistics provided by the Ontario Provincial Police in their efforts to support bullying awareness. And the effects of bullying can be serious, contributing to everything from headaches to depression, anxiety, and increased risk of suicide. We all need to be able to recognize and understand the different forms that bullying can take, including: • Physical: kicking, hitting, punching, slapping or shoving in order to gain power and control • Verbal: name calling, mocking, or making sexist, racist or homophobic comments • Social: excluding others from a group, or spreading gossip or rumours about them • Electronic/Cyberbullying: spreading rumours and hurtful comments through cellphones, e-mail, text
