It’s founder, Stephen Smith, become involved in the Colorado Wine Industry in the early 1980’s: planting vines in the Grand Valley, actively working toward legislation that created the Colorado Wine Industry Development Board and founding Grande River Vineyards Winery in 1990 using a portion of his first crop of planted grapes. Grande River Vineyards was the 5th licensed Winery in the State of Colorado. Doug Caskey, executive director of the Colorado Wine Industry Development Board, praised Smith, saying, “Steve is one of the true pioneers who built the Colorado wine industry from just a few sticks in the ground to a well regarded industry that has amazed and caught the attention of such wine icons as Warren Winiarski, winner of the 1976 Judgement of Paris and winemaker at one of the first wineries in Denver from 1968-1970, as well as Doug Frost, one of only four people in the world to hold both a Master of Wine and a Master Sommelier certification. When he judged the Colorado Governor’s Cup, Warren Winiarski noted that consumers “won’t be disappointed with Colorado wines.” After almost 40 years of laboring over grapevine crops, steel tanks, bottling machines, oak barrels and packaging, it’s “Just the Right Time” for this Colorado Wine Pioneer to move onto different pastures. According to Stephen; “I’d like to take credit for inventing the Colorado Wine Industry, but I think that might be like Al Gore taking credit for inventing the internet. I’ve watched this industry grow from 3 Wineries in 1987 to 150”. Since Grande River Vineyards’ first bottling, Colorado legislation has changed to adopt policies which benefit individual wineries and allow them a more favorable business environment. The quality of Colorado Wine had improved dramatically, the notability and awareness and the creativity of marketing and packaging all are combining to usher in the “Right Time” for investing in this business and moving it forward to the next level. Stephen Smith would like to sell the Winery and operations to the next generation of Winery Entrepreneurs.
