am honored to serve as the Chair of the Upper Arlington Area Chamber of Commerce. As we start 2012, we celebrate the success of the many initiatives and programs offered to our members and the surrounding community. Through the new tiered membership program, our members are introduced to new business opportunities, value added benefits and a choice as to the level of their involvement. In addition to these programs, the Chamber continues to promote a strong sense of community through our new partnership with the Upper Arlington Civic Association, and our ongoing collaboration with the City of Upper Arlington, Upper Arlington Community Improvement Corporation, Upper Arlington City Schools and many other strategic partners. The Board of Trustees and staff have worked diligently to create a 2012 action plan that brings all of the efforts from prior years to the surface. Integrating business development, retention and expansion initiatives into the Chamber’s mission will directly improve the local economy, which, in turn, will serve our membership and the overall community. The New Year also brings the formation of an Entrepreneurial Task Force that will explore new business development initiatives and build the framework for continued growth. In order to best serve our members, we continue to have an expanded and dynamic board of which all have been selected from committee or volunteer work inside of the Chamber. Our Board, President, staff and volunteers are all dedicated professionals working together to better our community. he business education classroom at Upper Arlington High School was transformed into a conference room recently when entrepreneurship students were given the opportunity to pitch their business plan ideas to Upper Arlington Chamber of Commerce members.

During the semester, entrepreneurship teams developed business plans for four businesses. In addition to creating business plans, the students participated in a collaboration project with the high school’s web design class students. The students worked in partnership to develop websites for each of the proposed businesses. In a recent survey of managers and executives, employers stated they desired employees who have “the four Cs” – critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration – or what are being called 21st century skills. These skills were established in each of the students through their ability to work collaboratively with their peers to take an idea and develop that idea into a working product. Each team effectively communicated its plans to Chamber of Commerce members with passion and enthusiasmIt was a pleasure watching how each of these future business leaders demonstrates real-world skills.
