student at Texas Wesleyan University will be graduating on time, May 12, after facing a tragic event that almost made her give up learning. Rebecca Moore, senior English major, came to Texas Wesleyan from Kerrville, Texas. She is a 2008 graduate of Tivy High School. “I originally wanted to go to college somewhere in New York,” Moore said. “I ended up choosing Texas Wesleyan because my mom wanted me to stay close to her.” Moore’s decision to stay closer to home allowed her to spend extra time with her family. At the time, she did not know it would be a blessing in disguise. During the middle of finishing her degree program, Moore’s mother became terminally ill. Two weeks before starting a new semester as a junior, Moore’s mother died. “I almost quit school,” Moore said. “There were so many times I even wanted to take breaks in the middle of the semesters, but my professors encouraged me to stay.” Moore credits her decision to continue her degree program to the professors at Texas Wesleyan who gave her support to keep going on a daily basis. “A lot of the professors kept me grounded,” Moore said. “It felt good that they invested a special interest in me.” Some professors invested a special interest in Moore, because they believed she had great

6

potential. In an email, Dr. Stacia Neely, associate professor of English, says Moore is always ready to pose a challenging question to anyone anywhere. “I enjoyed having Rebecca in classroom discussions because philosophically, politically and socially, she knows how to ‘shoot for the gap’ and prompt those around her to challenge themselves to analyze assumptions, stereotypes and misconceptions,” Neely said. “I especially enjoyed watching Rebecca take on leadership for the Invisible Children events hosted on this campus.” Aside from taking on a leadership role for the Invisible Children events, Moore participated in many campus activities and organizations. Moore was actively involved with Gamma Phi Beta, Alpha Lambda Delta, Freshman National Honor Society, Golden Shears and the President’s organization— just to name a few. “At one point I was participating in 11 different organizations,” Moore said. “Since I was so involved, some people thought I was intimidating, but I’m not—I’m a normal person.” Courtney Briley, sophomore mass communication major and president of Gamma Phi Beta, said Moore impacted each of her sorority sisters in different ways. “Rebecca was a great aspect to Gamma Phi Beta,” Briley said. “She acted as our education vice president for a year and did a wonderful job.” Moore says one person who has inspired her to do well in classes and activities is Dr. Carol

Johnson-Gerendas, assistant professor of communications and program coordinator of liberal studies. “She has been there for me for everything,” Moore said. “I call her my adoptive mom.” Johnson-Gerendas said she has known Moore since she was in her freshman English class in 2008 and made a deliberate choice to mentor her. Johnson-Gerendas said she was initialy intrigued by Moore’s ability to take in-class work and connect it to the outside world. She said they both share a passion for community service, and that has brough her clower to Moore as both a student and a person. “I’m extremely proud of her,” Johnson-Gerendas said. “She had to overcome a lot of personal and financial obstacles to obtain her degree.” After Moore graduates, she plans to take a year off to help her family become more stable and then plans to apply to graduate schools. “My ideal graduate school would be the University of Glasgow in Scotland,” Moore said. “But my back-up colleges are all around the United States.” Before graduating, Moore wants to encourage other students to do the best they can even when times are tough. “Don’t forget the opportunities Texas Wesleyan has to offer and take advantage to learn and grow from other people,” Moore said. “You don’t always get the amount of time you think you will get.”

She’s a mother, a wife, a founding member of the Texas Wes-

leyan Veterans Club, a member of the History Club, the Pi Gamma Mu honor society and Phi Alpha Theta honor society. Having to balance all of these things, it’s easy to see why graduating Carolyn Clontz would summarize herself with one word in particular. “Magic,” she said. “Just ask my daughter.” Clontz had a busy life even before she came to Wesleyan. Originally from Litchfield, Minnesota, Clontz joined the Minnesota National Guard in 2000. A year later, the events of September 11 made her sign up for active duty. “After 9/11, I felt that I needed to do more than sitting behind a desk at school,” she said. “Plus, I figured that I could travel while in Germany, which I did.” While stationed in Germany, she met her future husband, KC, who is a senior liberal studies major at Wesleyan. The two married before going back to Iraq for their second tour of duty. After they left the military, the Clontzs lived in Cheyenne, Wyoming. After the birth of their first child, they decided to move to Texas to be closer to KC’s family, and when Carolyn decided to go back to school, a family member told her about Texas Wesleyan University. “My father-in-law actually suggested Wesleyan. We came down one weekend and attended an orientation, and I was sold,” Clontz said. “I love the small campus and classroom sizes.” Clontz majored in history with a secondary certification and would love to become a teacher, but because there is a shortage of jobs in the teaching market, she has a backup plan. “If don’t get a teaching job, then I will be attending grad school here at Wesleyan as part of the counseling program,” Clontz said. “I want to stay as an active member of the Veterans Club and work toward improving that for the incoming students.” Her advice to future students is to take advantage of the amazing resources the university has at its disposal and get as involved on campus as possible. “If there isn’t a group that interests you, make one, that’s what Bobby Cowan and I did,” Clontz said. Clontz said what she will miss most are the professors and friends she has made on campus--especially Dr. Elizabeth Alexander, who has been her mentor, a huge influence on her academic success and someone Clontz looks up to a great deal. “[She] is completely the most awesome, powerful, brilliant lady I have ever met,” Clontz said. Clontz said Dr. Brenda Matthews and Dr. Timothy Grammer have also been huge influences on her academic success, and she respects them both a great deal. Clontz said she is celebrating her graduation by spending time with her family. One of her sisters is flying down to celebrate with her. “I am the first one out of eight siblings to get a bachelor’s degree. It’s quite the big thing in the family right now,” Clontz said. “I will just relax for a couple of days and then back to job hunting and taking care of my kids.”
