To our 2014 graduates, Congratulations on completing your undergraduate degree. This is a major milestone in your life, and we are very proud of the work you have done to achieve this accomplishment. At Texas Wesleyan, we work to create an intellectually engaging atmosphere where you can ask questions, stretch your thinking and thrive. We strive to prepare you to succeed in either a professional career or graduate studies. As you continue your journey, we hope you find that the experiences you had at Texas Wesleyan are invaluable to your future success. As a first-generation student, I know the value of a college education. In my father’s generation, a high school education would lead to success. In my generation, it was a bachelor’s degree. I believe that in your generation, a graduate degree or certification will be necessary. I encourage you to pursue both your passions and your studies. I encourage you to make learning a lifetime pursuit. We at Texas Wesleyan celebrate the accomplishments of the Class of 2014. Your work, passion and integrity make Texas Wesleyan the vibrant University that it is. Again, congratulations. I wish you all the best and hope to see you back on campus very soon. Sincerely, Fred Frederick G. Slabach President

SGA president looks back on 2013-14 year of service Kelsi Holland

kholland@txwes.edu

It has been my pleasure and honor to serve the students of this great university. Throughout the year there have been strides and improvements made to continue the success of Wesleyan. The Student Government Association took pride in working for the students and producing results. Some of our projects included fixing the sidewalks, partnering to build the sand volleyball court, partnering to renovate the workout room in Sid Richardson, the single stream recycling program, upgrading the Commuter Lounge in room 219 in the church, the Travel Abroad Scholarships and other student concerns. The 93rd Legislature has been so awesome to work with, and I cannot imagine working with anyone

else. You all were wonderful, and it has been an honor to serve you. This year has definitely been a success for SGA, and I look forward to hearing what SGA will accomplish next in 2014-15. As graduation approaches, I will miss my Wesleyan family. Over the course of four years, I have built bonds and everlasting friendships. I want to send a special thanks to President Frederick Slabach, Pati Alexander and Dr. Allen Henderson for their support. I also would like to thank Dr. Michelle Payne, Assistant Dean Chris Windsor and Dean of Students Cary Poole for their contributions to SGA. communication, seen a “smaller, smarter” advertisement, or visited the Wesleyan website. Like some of his peers, Sandles arrived at Wesleyan knowing exactly what he wanted to do, until he discovered – he didn’t want to be a lawyer. In fact, it would be some time before Sandles knew exactly which career path he would take. What he did know is that he was zealous about leadership and public speaking. He also knew he wanted to have an impact on the institution where he would complete his undergraduate degree. “The biggest thing that I want people to remember is I just tried to leave this place [Texas Wesleyan] better than it was when I got here,” Sandles said. “I tried to make it more exciting. “I never cared who got recognition for it,” he said. “The biggest things are: Was [the event] sucRambler Staff cessful, did it have an impact, did Business administration major Trent Sandles people enjoy it, is it something that they can look back on in their Paula Justice seen Trent Sandles, business ad- college careers and say, ‘That was prjustice@txwes.edu ministration major, English mi- awesome. of many events that Sandles has hosted and/or helped to coordinate at Texas Wesleyan. “Midnight Madness was a really big event, which was extremely successful, two years in a row,” Sandles said. “I didn’t expect for it to be as successful as it was. For us to get 300-something people out at midnight was really, really good.” Sandles has also been involved with introducing new students to the Wesleyan community and culture through events like Ram Camp. “I just had a phenomenal time hosting Ram Camp and assisting [with] Courtney Briley [former Wesleyan student] and Michael Chaney [former coordinator of student activities, volunteerism, and organizations,] and everyone else that assisted with Ram Camp,” Sandles said. “It was great to see the culture shift with the incoming freshmen class from what it had been in time past.” But Sandles wasn’t at Wesleyan simply to throw parties. He was preparing for a career. After deciding against becoming a lawyer or a history teacher, he got down to business. “I’ve always known business,” Sandles said. “And management, every business needs management of some sort.” Since 2012, Sandles has been displaying his managerial skills at Wesleyan. Some of the positions he’s held include head of orientation, director of Ram Camp, vice president of Mortar Board and International Association of Business Communicators, and head chair of Wesleyan’s Traditions Counsel. As was his goal, Sandler’s will certainly leave his mark on the Wesleyan campus. “I’ve enjoyed every bit of my time here at the university,” Sandles said. “Everything that I tried to do around the university was to benefit the masses, even if it didn’t look like it immediately.” He is graduating, but he leaves behind a word of freshmen and new student advising as is his custom. “College is about what you make it, so make it awesome.”

Wesleyan’s Austin Hogue excels in stand-up comedy Austin Iba

haiba@txwes.edu

Austin Hogue is a graduating senior and is majoring in advertising and marketing, but his passion is stand-up comedy. Hogue has performed stand-up comedy in the past. The very first time was in Monroe, La., when he was 19. “The best advice that I can give about telling jokes is to know your crowd, read your crowd, and don’t be scared to throw out a joke,” he said. “Some of the jokes might not be good, but you’ll find out when you try. You’ll never know until you do. Hogue is trying to stray away from stand-up comedy because he is currently working on an animated series called “Green Oaks” and wanted to use his jokes in the show to get a wider demographic audience.

Green Oaks is an animated television show based on four friends in the Fort Worth area, talking about their week, in a flashback. The show will implement both marketing and comedy - something that has rarely been done previously. Hogue and a three of his friends have been working on the show for four years. Together the four are local DJs at Times Square in Fort Worth. Each one adds this own expertise to the group. Hogue also writes the script while the others, including Zach Burke and Benjamin Danklin, provide the audio engineering, marketing and animation. All lend their voices to the animated characters. Hogue’s repertoire includes 46 specifically different voices for the show. “In my belief I have the best audio engineers in Texas, and they

are UTA (UT-Arlington) graduates,” said Hogue. “All of us here have unique talents. Hopefully, these unique talents will mold us together, and you’ll see us on TV

in the near future.” After graduation, Austin Hogue plans to put further work into the show and then finally get in on the air.

Return of Jetti Mathews Paula Justice

prjustice@txwes.edu

In November 2013, The Rambler featured a story about one of Wesleyan’s exemplary, nontraditional students – Jetti Mathews, liberal studies major and now May 2014 graduate. Though Mathews will join her fellow Rams’ and walk the stage to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in education, she has already begun taking courses towards a dual master’s degree. She plans to study reading and administration and graduate in December 2016. Currently, Mathews is substitute teaching, by request, at the school where she completed her student teaching. As for her passion for children

and teaching: “I would have to say that my passion has maybe grown because I see that I am truly made for this career,” Mathews said.

Crocker graduates in 2014 one Monster™ at a time Rosy Perez

Rperez1196@txwes.edu

Starting at Texas Wesleyan in 2010, Levi Crocker has done what most freshmen hope to accomplish--he will be graduating Saturday, May 17, at 10 a.m. with his fellow classmates. Crocker will be graduating with a bachelor’s degree in business administration with an emphasis in finance. So how did Crocker do it? With lots of Monster energy drinks. If you were in Dr. Tom Smith’s class, you noticed that Crocker always had a Monster in hand. “It became more of a habit of drinking them (Monsters) rather than actually getting any energy boosting effects out of the drinks,” Crocker said.

During his time at Wesleyan Crocker said he gained great interest in taking Dr. Smith’s classes even though they were electives in some cases. “Dr. Smith was one of my favorite professors to take,” he said. “Although I was a finance major, I took his marketing and advertising classes as electives because I enjoyed his class so much.” Along with Dr. Smith, Crocker also had Dr. Sinan Yildrim to inspire him and guide him in his future in finance. “Dr. Yildrim was one of the reasons I decided to move into finance,” Crocker said. “After taking a finance course with him, I realized finance can be fun and I liked how it worked. Had I not taken his class, I may not have chosen the major I am today.” During his free time this busi-

ness major like to go to the beach, fish and golf. Something many people do not know about Crocker is that he loves the beach and secretly wants to be a beach bum. So what will Crocker miss about Wesleyan? “[I will miss] the small size and closeness within the institution,” he said. “All of the close relationships that came through TWU will carry with me through my career and life. I believe that I would not have had as many if I attended a larger school.” Like other students graduating from Wesleyan, Crocker is thinking about his future at the university. “I plan on trying to continue school and obtain my master’s degree,” he said. “After that is finished, a job within financing or investing will be in sight.”

Texas Wesleyan Bookstore provides key services Austin Iba

haiba@txwes.edu

Located just across from the Baker Building and next door to what was once Subway on Rosedale Street is the Texas Wesleyan Bookstore, which provides students with anything they need: hoodies, workout bottles, snacks, and, of course, books. While the Wesleyan Bookstore’s central mission is help students with what they need to be successful in the classroom, to do this the store provides students with a variety of books from old and new prints, print and digital, for rent or for purchase. With digital books and online classes being added into the education program at the university, these services give both options and competition for the Bookstore. However, for a business to survive is must adapt. The Bookstore is a single, solid source on campus for wide and growing variety of digital course materials. Students either can come to the bookstore or

visit the website EFollett.com to purchase any of the products from the store, either walk-in or online. “I can go online and go to Ramlink for my classes and then order my books online in a flash,” Patricia Howard, a senior theatre major, said. Renting books can save students up to 8090 percent compared to buying them, and it is sometimes easier to rent them online. Many students also can go to Campus Book Rentals.com and look in the search engine search under author, book title, keyword, or ISBN number. Students can select the books that you need and choose how long they want to keep them. Selected books will then be packed up and dropped in the mail and will arrive on your doorstep. Students also can return rented books if they have dropped classes or for whatever reasons within 30 days for free. After they are done with these books, they can put them in their pre-paid shipping envelopes in the mail, and

they can complete the process. All shipping is paid for, and the shipping envelope is provided. This also provides students anytime and anywhere with unlimited access and features interactive learning tools such as video, animation and models. “While we continue to see increased interest in digital markets each semester, “ Danielle LaMere Smith, manager of the Texas Wesleyan Bookstore, said, “the majority of demand is still attributed to print materials for purchase or for rent.” In addition to affordable materials, the Bookstore also provides unique service by allowing the use of financial aid, making it easy for students to return or exchange books and making sure students have the right materials for their classes. “It’s very accessible, I like that the people are helpful, I never have had a problem with the staff,” Howard said.
