Letters from the Presidents To our 2015 graduates, Congratulations on completing your degree at Texas Wesleyan. This issue of The Gradual is meant to mark a major achievement in your life, and we’re very proud of your work. At Texas Wesleyan, we stress critical thinking and analytical reasoning. We strive to prepare you to succeed in a professional career or graduate studies. As you continue your journey, we hope that your time at Texas Wesleyan is a deep well that you continue to draw from for inspiration and expertise. As a first-generation college graduate, I know the value of an education. In my father’s generation, a high school education would lead to success. In my generation, it was a bachelor’s degree. I believe that in your generation, a graduate degree or certification is needed. I encourage you to pursue both your passions and your studies. I encourage you to make learning a lifetime pursuit. We celebrate the accomplishments of the Class of 2015. Your work, passion and integrity make Texas Wesleyan the vibrant University that it is. Again, congratulations. I wish you all the best and hope to see you back here at Texas Wesleyan very soon. Sincerely, Fred

Lastly, I challenge you to be someone you’d admire; be someone who inspires others; be someone who breaks out of their comfort zone; be someone that is not afraid to fail, and if you do, learn from it. Now, we have the responsibility to represent our Alma Mater proudly and make imprints on the world. I wish all of you luck with your future endeavors! Rams up! Tyler J. Then & now: What would 2015 be like?

“I thought we would for sure have flying cars. I thought you would be able to type something in your fridge and it would just poof, you would have your food. I thought we would be able to teleport. I thought for sure we would have holograms. I thought we would for sure be able to time travel and that there would be aliens everywhere.” Paige Wheaton, exercise science major

“I think for me, I never could really fathom what 2015 would be like. I could say I thought it would be like Back to the Future or Total Recall (the original movie), but even that wouldn't be accurate. So to answer your question, 2015 felt like years and years away from me. I was definitely in my own little world in elementary school.” Jessica Carpenter, general business administration major

Congratulations Graduates of 2015!

“I thought that we’re not going to make it past the millenium. I thought that we would have robots controlling everything. I thought that we would have flying cars and cars that flew us automatically. I thought that we were going to have tiny tiny little cell phones.” Lauren Hutchenson, exercise science major

A Letter to Myself: Mindy Long Dear Mindy, The number one thing you must remember when starting college is that this is an opportunity given to a small population. You are so fortunate and do not ever take that for granted. Knowledge will enrich your life. Now, you are going to meet a lot of different people. Accept them. It takes all kinds to make this world, so appreciate your differences. Listen to people. You have something to learn from everybody. NEVER say anything that is harmful to another person. If you are not being constructive to your fellow man, then at least, do not be destructive. There is enough hate in the world. Try your hardest in everything that you do because anything worth having is worth the tears and sweat you put forth. You are going to cry over a computer… a lot. so press Control S after every paragraph and amazing sentence you write. Lastly, know that everybody is confused to an extent. Some of us do not know what we want and some don’t know how to get what we want, but it will happen if you want it bad enough. Continue to better yourself as a student and as a person. Time goes by so fast, so please do not waste it. Dream bigger and work harder. Love, Mindy Marie Long

Senior Spotlight: Jacob Rivera-Sanchez rived in fall 2011 immediately following his graduation from high school. Sanchez received a full scholarship from the Fort Worth Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to Wesleyan. Sanchez began working with the SGA in fall 2013 as the president’s assistant under President Kelsi Holland’s administration. President Tyler Mendez later appointed Sanchez

Student Government Association Secretary Jacob Rivera-Sanchez, theatre major, is graduating from Texas Wesleyan University. Sanchez ar-

secretary for the 2014-2015 academic school year. Sanchez choose to come to Wesleyan because he liked being a part of an environment in which he could easily communicate with his professors and have the individual attention he needed. “I also sought Wesleyan for the endless opportunities the theatre department would potentially offer,” Sanchez said. “Plus my high school theatre teacher is an alumnus, and she highly recommended it.” Sanchez stayed at Wesleyan during his entire academic career. “I progressed so much during my first year that I was not willing to start over anywhere else, Sanchez said. “There was so much I enjoyed about being in the theatre department that foreshadowed the kind of progress I could make in the future.” Sanchez’s proudest accomplishment while at Wesleyan was being a part of all 20 or so productions that Theatre Wesleyan produced in the last four years. “Whether I was onstage, backstage, or designing, I had a hand in bring-

ing those productions to fruition,” he said. “At a lot of other schools with bigger theatre programs - where it is so competitive, especially in the performance emphases - some people only do a couple of shows within their four years.” The last production for Sanchez was his role as a filmmaker named Mark, in the 61st annual Wesleyan musical, RENT. “My character was a little bit more of a rebel rouser than how he’s been played before, and I’ve tried to find new ways to bring about that because it’s such a stretch from who I am and other characters I’ve played before,” Sanchez said. “Plus, it’s refreshing because I listened to the original cast recording all the time with Anthony Rapp who played Mark, who I met in New York last summer.” Sanchez believes that the college experience is based on what the students put into it. “If you get involved and stay busy being productive or social, you’ll have a better experience,” Sanchez said. “The friends you make in college are the friends you’ll socialize and network with more than others.” Sanchez said it has been a privilege being a part of the Texas Wesleyan family as a student. He is looking forward to the new doors and opportunities that come his way as an alumnus. “No matter where I go or what I do in the future, Wesleyan will always play a part, and I will always be a representation of the kind of students the school produces,” Sanchez said. “It just goes to show that hard work and dedication is worth it.”

A Letter to Myself: Michael Duncan Hey Knucklehead, I bet you won’t re-enlist again. Well if you make it out of here this time, I would start looking for a better opportunity. You are not young as you used to be, and it doesn’t seem like this war is ever going to end. I would suggest you start looking for some kind of work outside of the Army and look for a better lifestyle. You are taking a beating and not really recovering as fast as you used to. Well, hopefully, you will make some good choices in your life, but remember everything you have done and will do is just a stepping stone into who you are. Don’t be a person who is judged by your words. Be a person who is judged by your actions. Live life to its fullest everyday and don’t ever look back and think what if or if I had only done this differently. Learn from your mistakes and keep on keeping on. -Michael

Next thing I know, pretty much everyone on campus at least knows my name.” Involvement in student life has helped Morrison put her leadership skills into action. “I’ve always been told that I have a strong ability to lead people and help them become leaders,” she said. “I always say a good leader is someone who builds other good leaders alongside them. So when I came here as an RA, I was able to use that gift. It has been cool seeing multiple of my residents become RAs.” Morrison encourages students to step out of their comfort zone like she did her freshman year. “I tell all my freshman students to get out there, get active, go to events, join clubs if you can.” Morrison is graduating with a degree in psychology and plans on going to graduate school in the near future. She would like to study business management and continue to use her leadership skills in her career.

Nikaila Morrison came to Texas Wesleyan University as a freshman in 2011. Since then, Morrison has become involved with student life, Greek life, and other areas throughout campus. She was chosen as a Golden Shears recipient, an award given in recognition of outstanding leadership and participation in school organizations and activities. “Working with student life has been very rewarding,” she said. “When I came here I didn’t like talking to people, but I pushed myself to go to different events and talk to people; because I came in not knowing a single person.” Morrison was encouraged by her family to work as a Resident Assistant to help her get involved and become a leader on campus. “My cousin was an RA at UNT and was telling me about how fun it was to do different events,” she said. “I thought that would be a great way for me to get involved and meet people. “So I started figuring out who I needed to talk to and what I needed to

Senior Spotlight: Seandre Sadler Seandre Sadler is a member of the Texas Wesleyan University basketball team and an Exercise Science major. He is one of Wesleyan’s graduating seniors this spring and has some big plans after graduation. “After I graduate I plan to go to graduate school so 10 years from now I can be a successful physical therapist,” Sadler said. Sadler is from St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands and graduated from Wanda R. Smith High School in Keene, Texas where he was the captain of the varsity basketball team. He has been playing basketball since he was in the first grade and says it is a very important aspect of his life. “Playing basketball is not just a game. It also teaches you how to work with others,” Sadler said. “Ever since I began playing, I have learned to love the sport more and more.” After graduating from Wanda R. Smith High School, he started school at Mountain View Junior College where he played the power forward position on the basketball team. He graduated with an associate de-

gree in science before transferring to Wesleyan. Sadler is currently an exercise science major concentrating on physical therapy at Wesleyan. He says he chose this major because it gives him the opportunity to help others. “I want to help people improve their physical conditions effectively,” Sadler said. He says he enjoyed his time at Wesleyan, especially because he was on the basketball team. “The thing I liked most about Wesleyan was being on the basketball team. I was able to travel and play the sport I love,” Sadler said. His advice to incoming freshmen is to study very hard because in the end it will all be worth it.

Sims has been at Texas Wesleyan for two years as a junior transfer student playing basketball. “Texas Wesleyan has been a tremendous experience,” Sims said. Sims said her most memorable moment at Wesleyan was when she broke her ankle in the first round of the playoffs. “I remember coming back to the school the next couple of days and so many people offering to help me,” Sims said. “There was so much love in the air I was unsure on what to do with all it all.” Sims said she felt like she was blessed to be a part of the Texas Wesleyan family when this tragedy struck her life. The year 2015 has been a challenge for Sims so far but she is very optimistic and positive about it. “The year 2015 is a very big year for me. Letter to Myself: Deborah Dover Dear miniature me, There are so many things I wish I could tell you. But alas, some lessons are best learned the hard way in life. However, I will say stick to being yourself. Don’t give up on being you just because it is not the easy route. High school bullies will always be just that, stuck in a high school mindset often reminiscing about their ‘glory days.’ College bullies, well they can go shove it where the sun doesn’t shine. You, dear one, do not have to put up with them. Move. Move out, move up and move on. If anyone is belittling you then move. You are not a hundred dollar bill and not everyone is going to like you; and that is okay. Be weird and live. Bask in all of the glory of being different. There are a million cookie cutter girls already. Dare to be different, dare to dream big, laugh loud and often, and, above all, love all of the fandoms. Do not concern yourself with petty things such as fake friends. Real friends are there for you no matter the circumstances. They aren’t there because it is convenient. In closing, younger self be true to who you are inside. Oh, and please put down the cookie, and maybe grab an apple. It is a lot harder to lose weight once you’ve already gotten it. However, it is a lot easier to prevent the gaining of weight. Deborah Dover

Senior Spotlight: Morgan Kirkpatrick Many students strive to become involved on their college campus. Morgan Kirkpatrick, graduating biology major, challenges students to not only get involved on campus, but to seek opportunities beyond Texas Wesleyan as well. “I wish I would have gotten more experience in the medical field,” he said. “I’m really glad I got involved around campus, but I do think getting involved outside of campus is important. You could volunteer at a hospital, or scribe and shadow.” Kirkpatrick has been involved all over campus during his four years at Wesleyan. He has spent three years as a resident assistant and has also been involved in orientations, Greek life, student life and more. “I would encourage anyone wanting to go on to grad school or professional school to get involved in the community outside of the school,” he said. “You can volunteer or get an internship or job related to the field you want to go into. Even if you’re not wanting to pursue another degree, it looks great on your resume to have more relatable and applicable experience.” Looking back on his freshman year experience, Kirkpatrick encourages students who are involved on campus

to give 100 percent to the club or organization. As a sophomore, Kirkpatrick joined a fraternity on campus and it made a huge impact on his college experience. “It’s been more influential because I was more involved in it than any other organizations,” he said. “There was a lot more to it than I expected, and it would have been nice to have another year in it and to have started my freshman year. In the fraternity, I was able to get so much more leadership skills than any other organization because I got so involved.” Kirkpatrick was recognized for all of his achievements at Wesleyan by being awarded The Law Sone Award. This award is given to the most outstanding senior male at Awards Day. Kirkpatrick’s drive to learn and be involved with the community is not stopping at Wesleyan. He is currently applying to medical schools and will be scribing for three hospitals around the Fort Worth area this summer.

Congratulations, Erica!

Senior Spotlight: Chris Shaddix

Chris Shaddix has been waiting for the day he would graduate college. Shaddix is proudly graduating with a bachelor of liberal studies degree from Texas Wesleyan University on May 16. He has been counting up the years until he would graduate from college since he started grade school. “I remember thinking to myself how strange the numbers sounded for the year of my graduation,” Shaddix said. “I definitely didn’t expect the numbers to be 2-0-1-5.” As a child growing up in the 90s, Shaddix said he pictured this year to be full of robots and excitement. “I thought I would get to do whatever I wanted as an adult,” Shaddix said. “I saw myself traveling the futuristic world and having fun.” Shaddix has been pursuing higher education ever since he graduated from high school in 2005. “Imagine playing M.A.S.H (mansion, apartment, shack, house) in your head and planning out your entire life as a kid,” Shaddix said. “By this time I pictured myself already married with a house and a mortgage.” However, as a child, he didn’t realize how long and challenging the road ahead would be.

“I had everything strategically planned,” he said. “I was going to be living in an apartment overlooking a big city somewhere and driving a Jaguar. I even knew how many kids I would have - three.” Shaddix has attended five universities in the past 10 years and finally found the school for him. “Texas Wesleyan is a school that shares my values of community, hard work and equality in diversity,” he said. “I found a school where the faculty truly cares about my success in the real world.” Shaddix hopes to obtain a state job in the criminal victim’s service field or as a litigation paralegal where he can build upon his values, he said. “I’m honored to say I have stuck with school and overcome the many burdens that come along with balancing school and work,” he said. “It is almost hard to imagine myself after school, and I still dream of that Jaguar.” Even though it’s not exactly what he pictured himself doing, he is still proud of his accomplishments. “Today, I imagine my future life to hold great things,” Shaddix said. “I think the younger Chris would be proud of me today.”
