Treasure Ford

PEOPLE YOU MAY KNOW: Bryan Ford Tabatha Martinez

After 16 years of waiting tables and being a restaurant manager, Treasure Ford was ready for something new. Encouraged by her husband Bryan and loved ones, three and a half years ago, at age 28, she fell in love with academics again. “About three weeks into my first semester before I decided I was going to go all the way, I fell in love with it. I loved my teachers,” she said. “I fell in love with learning again.”

May 2017

Two years later, she graduated from Tarrant County College. Ford believed her only option was the University of Texas at Arlington because of its proximity to her home. “I thought that UTA was going to be my only option because I live in Hurst and I just wanted to be in a good driving distance,” Ford said. To her dismay, UTA was not exactly what she was looking for. “I went to UTA and it did not go well,”

Ford said. “I met with an advisor and basically they just weren’t very friendly. I thought, ‘Oh well, I’m going to be a number in the machine, cranking out students.’” She later encountered Texas Wesleyan University on a television commercial. “I saw the ad on TV and I thought I just had never really heard of Wesleyan before,” Ford said. She immediately contacted Jeff Green, a Wesleyan transfer counselor, and made

arrangements to talk to him about attending Wesleyan. “It was amazing because he met with me for an hour. Me and my friend were both asking questions. He told us why he came to Wesleyan and why he loves it here, and I was blown away,” Ford said. If Wesleyan had not been so personable, Ford may have chosen UTA. “I got lured in by the commercial, and then they blew me away,” Ford said. Being a nontraditional student has allowed her to value her college education, her experience at Wesleyan and the bachelor’s degree in marketing she will be obtaining this year. All of her academic success would not have been possible without her two main supports, her husband and Tabatha Martinez, her sister. “I couldn’t have done it without them,” she said. “There were plenty of times where I thought I was going to lose my mind, mostly during algebra, and then when I was taking 18 hours,” Ford said. “But they were always there to ground me and to tell me that I was awesome, that they were proud of me, and they knew I could do it.”

@Maria Acosta Maria Acosta, a psychology major, plans to work after graduating before heading to graduate school. One of Acosta’s biggest accomplishments at Texas Wesleyan was being able to do a counseling internship. The internship allowed her to take what she had learned in class and apply it in a real-world setting. Acosta worked for the Keller Independent School District, shadowing an intervention counselor at an alternative school. After a while, she began to take on caseloads and was assigned to have counseling sessions with divorce groups and a grief group. Acosta chose counseling because she has always been an empathetic person and looks to help others with their situations. She truly enjoyed her time at Wesleyan due to its small size classes and the intimacy of the classes. Her advice for students is to make the most of their time here on campus and try to find the best balance between school, work and fun.

The Gradual Lyndsey Bessinger, a business management major, has spent the last four years, and eight semesters on the dean’s list. Bessinger has left her mark on Texas Wesleyan and all the groups she was involved in. Among these are the cheerleading squad, Mortar Board, Beta Sigma Gamma fraternity and Student Government Association. She has also been a West Village resident assistant and Ram Camp leader. Bessinger said she hopes that she has made a positive impression at Wesleyan, because it has left a positive impression on her. “I have never felt alone at Texas Wesleyan University,” Bessinger said. “Even at my lowest, there has always been people ready to stand up for me, or merely to walk beside me during this journey. “And I owe everything to the people who believed in me, people like Ashley Newkirk and many, many more. I can’t thank these people enough; they shaped me into the person I am. It is because of them that I wanted to work for the betterment of our students at all turns, and share the love and respect that was given to me.”

One of the many things I love about Texas Wesleyan University is that people will frequently go out of their way to help you. One person that has helped me tremendously along my journey here at school is Brennen Shingleton. When I was a junior in high school, I came to one of Texas Wesleyan’s basketball camps and since then knew I wanted to be a part of this program and play for Coach Shingleton. There were three lessons that he taught me in three entirely separate ways. I still think it’s remarkable how the things he taught us were things that directly reflected the game of basketball but were also life lessons. “Nobody is going to give you anything in life. You have to earn it,” was the first. Now I know this may seem cliché, but it was something that stuck with me in the classroom and on the court. The second lesson was that hard-

work pays off. Coach Shingleton is the living example of how hard work pays off. From my freshman year, I have admired his work ethic and have tried to match that in things that I do. The third lesson was not something that he specifically told me or showed me, but it is something that I believe he taught me. That lesson was how to be patient. Patience is something that we must learn through experience. After coming up short of our goals in the previous seasons, we came back and won two consecutive SAC Championships and a National Championship. These memories will live forever, and it would not have been possible without Coach Shingleton and the lessons he has taught myself and others. Patrick Listach

Tyler Guse, senior theatre major, is prepared to tour the United States while pursuing his love of costume design. Guse has multiple Theatre Wesleyan technical credits, including being in charge of publicity and graphic design for Stop Kiss, costume design

for When the Rain Stops Falling and The 39 Steps, assistant costume design for The Survivor, assistant stage manager for The Heiress, and stage manager for Vanya, Sonya, Masha and Spike, Fuddy Meers and Metamorphoses. Guse has received multiple awards

and recognitions, including the Law Sone award and the Theatre Major of the Year award for his hard work in onstage performance and technical credits. Guse believes his hard work, dedication and achievements are due to his previous professor, Brynn Bristol, who

taught him what it takes to be a great costume designer and gave him the opportunity to dress with the Dallas Opera. He hopes to have a career as a stage manager or costume dresser for a theatrical performance touring the country.

Kee looks forward to new start It is a time of major decision making for senior business management major Lauren Kee as she approaches her final days of attending Texas Wesleyan. For the past five years, Kee has been involved in soccer but unfortunately had to give up the sport due to an injury during her junior year. However, Kee was able to become soccer manager for her senior year and still make memories with the rest of the team. Before deciding to come to Wesleyan, Kee said she was pushed by her club soccer coach to play for the Wesleyan soccer team, where she eventually, and made a new family. “I always loved soccer bus rides, especially if we were traveling for six hours,” Kee said. “Our coach would always come to the back of the bus with us and we would see a different side of everyone as we rode together.” Kee said what made her decision to come to Wesleyan easier was the fact that Wesleyan was a smaller school where she felt she could interact more with students and professors. “My coach told me I had to come here

to play soccer,” Kee said. “When I came to Wesleyan, I saw how close to home it was, how small the campus was, and realized I would be comfortable with the professors since I would get more time to interact with them one-on-one.” Now, Kee says she can’t wait until the day comes where she walks the stage and her whole life changes. “Wesleyan helped me grow and find out what I wanted to be as I became older,” Kee said. “After graduation, I have an internship with Event Planning in Dallas in the summer. After the summer is over, I will be headed off to Portland to work for the Knight Foundation.” Kee said her time at Wesleyan was definitely memorable whether it was on or off campus. “I’m just so excited about the next chapter in my life since I love change, especially now since I’ll be ready to move on and graduate,” Kee said. “I still want to help out the Wesleyan community and come see soccer games because of my new family I’ll always have because of soccer.”

Dr. Brown inspires love for psychology

I would like to thank Dr. Brown for where I am today. I remember the first class I had with him which was Intro to Psychology. His classes were difficult, and his test were worse, but when he talked about the information, it was fascinating. I fell in love with the subject and wanted to pursue the psychology field even more. Dr. Brown not only taught me in class but also allowed me to work on research under him. His classes still fascinate me, and he is always able to keep it interesting. Without him, I would not have been able to learn as much as I have in the psychology field. He is bluntly honest in his constructive criticism, and that has helped me improve as a person overall. He is a man that doesn’t demand respect but earns it through his dedication to our education and research that brings prestige to our university.
