Christmas gifts on a college student’s budget Jessica Liptak jliptak@txwes.edu
Christmas is approaching, and it is time to start shopping for family and friends. As a college student, it can be difficult to buy gifts for all of your loved ones when you are on a tight budget. Here are some gift ideas that won’t break the bank.
Photo gifts
Photo gifts will be a huge hit, especially for moms, grandparents, and significant others. There are endless possibilities of photo gifts you can create. You could make a framed collage of old childhood photos that have been buried and forgotten over the years, frame a recent family photo, create a simple photo album of you and your family in 2014, or create a 2015 calendar filled with family photos. This won’t be a gift that is used and outdated in a couple months; it will be cherished for years to come. If creativity isn’t up your alley, there are plenty of places to help you out, including Snapfish and Shutterfly. These places constantly offer discounts, make sure to include your sale code at the checkout.
Food gifts
If there is one thing that everyone loves, it is food. Buy some of your loved one’s favorite snack and present it in a nice way. You could do this by filling up a jar with favorite candy and adding a simple ribbon around the lid. You also could prepare a cookie mix along with some cookie cutters. If this person loves movies, create a movie night basket with popcorn, a drink, candy, and
maybe even a coupon for a movie rental. If people you know loves coffee or hot cocoa, get them a nice mug and some of the drink. Look up “homemade food gifts in a jar” online and you will find lots of possibilities.
Experience gifts
Gifts don’t have to be something you receive at the time. Plan a unique activity to do with your loved one. You will create great memories which will last longer than any gift. This could be anything from a planned dinner with your sibling to a round of golf for your dad. Groupon, CoolSavings, Yipit, and LivingSocial are great for finding unique discounted activities. Just write out your activity plan on a nice piece of paper or include the voucher/coupon in your card.
Other tips
Be sure to do your research before buying gifts. There are a lot of websites selling discounted products and services. The savings will start to add up. Websites like Fab.com, Amazon.com, and Overstock.com almost always have discounted prices on gifts. Many stores will match competitor’s prices if you ask. Some of these stores include Target, JCPenney, Best Buy, Walmart, and Kohls. Be sure to ask your local store for details. Some stores will only match other local store pricing and not online pricing. In the end, most people appreciate gifts that show thought, not how much they cost. If you really put thought into the person’s present and give them something that they can practically use, they will love the gift you give them.
