Festivals A good country experience is never hard to find in Upper Hunter Country and none is better than seeing the traditional country capability of man and horse together. This is witnessed each year at the King of the Ranges Stockman’s Challenge. Now also incorporating a bush festival with damper cooking, poetry, whip cracking, live entertainment and much more, the challenge itself is a not to be missed extravaganza. It’s held on the first weekend in May at the start of the Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival, providing a showcase of the top stockmen, women and children from across Australia with their horses completing challenges such as cross country, horse shoeing, whip cracking, bareback obstacle, packhorse and stock handling and the exciting finals of a wild horse catch and stock saddle buckjump.
The sound of bagpipes fills the atmosphere with true Scottish heritage in Aberdeen each July when the ever popular Aberdeen Highland Games is launched. The traditional event sees mass pipe bands travel from across the state to take part in a grand parade and the festivities of the day.
Vintage cars have become the new fad in the Hunter with many motoring enthusiasts taking great pride in showcasing their historic glory annually at the Aberdeen Big Boys Toys and Family Day. Designed as a day for men to get together and show off their ‘toys’ from vintage cars to motorcycles, boats and trucks, the event has now grown into a massive attraction for the whole family. There are jumping castles, side shows and face painting for the children, and a growing range of market stalls for the ladies. You can even grab a snapshot of the Aberdeen area in a joy flight with Hunter Valley Helicopters. Now in its eighth year, the Aberdeen Big Boys Toys and Family Day is a not to be missed event held on the first weekend each September in Upper Hunter Country. For more information, contact the Aberdeen Neighbourhood Centre on 6543 8457 or email admin.aberdeennc@upperhunter.nsw.gov.au

Hundreds of market stalls line the outskirts of Harrison Oval at Jefferson Park and people travel from near and far to pack in and have a taste of Scottish dancing, tartan warrior strong man events, tug ‘o’ war national titles, children’s races and more in a real celtic scene. Numerous events take place throughout the weekend, including a ceilidh on the Saturday evening and a Kirkin’ of the Tartan on the Sunday. Recognised as one of the four flagship events in the Upper Hunter Shire, the games are held on the first weekend in July.
Festivals If you are inquisitive about seeing sheep scampering along a main thoroughfare in red socks, then satisfy your curiosity at the Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces. One of the major attractions in the Upper Hunter, the action-packed June long weekend event starts on the Friday night, allowing for a full program, which includes cart derby, sheep dog trials, yarn spinning, quilting exhibitions, amusement rides, billy boiling, market stalls, crafts, agricultural displays, shearing competition and lots more. Saturday’s activities wrap up with a spectacular fireworks display from 6pm. The Festival of the Fleeces began in 1990 to commemorate the town’s involvement within the Australian wool industry. It has since gone from strength-to-strength. The big drawcard, however, is the flock of sheep, fully adorned in red socks, leading the Saturday parade down Bettington Street in Merriwa. It’s a festival to experience true country hospitality - and one not to be missed.
In May each year Denman hosts the Upper Hunter Wine and Food Affair, known as the Hunter Valley’s ‘Best Street Party’. It attracts thousands of people and offers world renowned Upper Hunter wines, gourmet street and take-home food, free live bands, street theatre, and entertainment for children. Denman and Sandy Hollow also host popular Charity Horse Rides. Muswellbrook hosts many annual events and festivals that celebrate the local and Upper Hunter community’s history and culture throughout the year including Muswellbrook Carnivale, Upper Hunter Show, St Heliers Heavy Horse Field Days and the Blue Heeler Film Festival. Muswellbrook Golf Club’s Spring Festival of Golf includes the Black Coal Cup among others and Muswellbrook Race Club in addition to the annual racing calendar hosts the Carnival of Cups in Spring. The Global Village Motorfest and Fair also attracts huge crowds in November. The St Heliers Heavy Horse Field Days is one of the ‘mane’ events on the Muswellbrook Carnivale in Spring program, which takes place in August every year. The family-orientated affair at the St Heliers exhibition grounds, Sandy Creek Road, Muswellbrook, is a great weekend for those with an interest in breeds like Clydesdales, Shires, Percherons and Draught Horses. For the heavy horse owner, the competition highlights include led, ridden, slide and long rein, ploughing and carriage events.

Devil Ark Visitors who have a soft spot for small endangered cuddly animals can embark on a sight-seeing adventure into the wilderness at Tomalla and witness nature first hand at Devil Ark. The Tasmanian Devil conservation park is home to many devils, including a host of cute babies that are bred on site in the hills of the Barrington Tops. Devil Ark was established by the Australian Reptile Park director John Weigel and other conservationists as a safe site to continue breeding the Tasmanian Devil and prevent its extinction from the disastrous Devil Facial Tumour Disease. The first of its kind of insurance breeding project, it has already seen a boom in the cute little creatures with almost 200 healthy devils. Fully escorted two and a half hour tours are available running from September to May each year and includes a rare chance to witness wild devils in their natural habitat of the free range enclosures. Devil Ark is located two hours from Scone, four hours from Newcastle and six hours from Sydney. To organise a tour, contact 1300 553 565, email info@devilark.com.au or visit www.devilark.com.au

Food & wine
It’s touted as the Hunter’s best street party. So, on the first Saturday in May, tempt your taste buds at the Upper Hunter Wine and Food Affair in Denman. Fantastic gourmet stalls from local producers and restaurants line Ogilvie Street, while the region’s wineries offer tastings and great deals. With dishes from Germany, Thailand, Mexico, Turkey, Spain, Holland and Italy, to name just a few, there is something to please even the fussiest of foodies. But, it’s not all about wine and food. Excellent entertainment is also a main priority for organisers. Street theatre, bands, woodchopping, special guests, performing artists and belly dancers add to the overall atmosphere. For the kids, there’s a children’s park with rides, face-painting and clowns. Buses are available from Maitland, Singleton, Scone, Muswellbrook and Merriwa on the day – ensuring you miss none of the fun.

Scenic drives
❏ From page 50
The prominent peak of Mount Dangar (670m above sea level) can be seen to the right. Pass horse studs on the left and continue on to James Estate Winery (11km). James Estate Winery is set within the 1560 acre property. The complex contains a fully integrated wine manufacturing and bottling facility as well as a spacious cellar door and tasting area open seven days a week. Detour - Baerami Creek Road (14.5km) - the road follows the floor of this scenic valley. Just past Baerami you will see the Baerami Homestead on the right, a two storey Victorian mansion built of local sandstone in 1875. There are olive, cattle and pecan nut farms. Baerami Oil Shale Relics are located 24 kms down Baerami Creek Road. These relics are in the Wollemi National Park. Easy access is via 1km of private property. This is an important historic site featuring machinery and other relics of a turn of the century oil shale mining venture. Reubens Fire Trail starts at the relics and links up with Widden Creek Road 8.4km further on. This is a good walking trail passing old mine adits, powder magazines and hand built roads. Return the 24 kms to the Bylong Valley Way and to Baerami (15km) – a tiny rural village. The hall was built in 1925 with timber slabs and is still used for bush dances, play groups and other

local functions. Continue over the Baerami Creek bridge passing Baerami Church (now privately owned) on the left and Dingo Creek where the Bushranger Thunderbolt had a hideout. Continuing, Wollemi National Park is on the left and the Goulburn River to the right. Next is the Phipps Cutting barbecue picnic area with toilets, and wellmarked trails into Wollemi National Park (23km). There is a short walk to the left, which takes you up to a bench with views across the farmland. Other walks take you directly into the park where there is an abundance of wildlife including brush tail possums, kangaroos, regent honeyeaters, peregrine falcons and wedgetail eagles. The Bicentennial National Trail also passes here. Detour – (27km) Widden Valley Way 30 km detour with spectacular views of sandstone ridges and escarpments of the Wollemi National Park; picnic beside the Widden Brook. Continue on to Honey-suckle Creek Picnic Area (44km) where there is a fireplace and toilets, surrounded by thick bushland and trees. Cox’s Gap Tunnel (45km) is on the right. This is a straight 761 metre tunnel and was one of the few parts of the original Sandy Hollow Railway project to be completed. To avoid going over the steep gap it was used by motorists on the Ulan Road until “reclaimed” as a railway tunnel in 1982. In the 1970s it featured in the opening sequence for the
TV motor show Torque with Peter Wherrett with a car bursting from the tunnel. The rail line is mainly used to transport coal from Ulan and ore from Cobar. Continue along the Bylong Valley Way to the railway crossing (57km) and turn right at the signpost for Wollar driving for 14kms through farmlands. Turn right onto the Ringwood Road sign-posted Merriwa (71km). Continue over O’Brien’s Crossing (78km). The Goulburn River crossing is part of a Travelling Stock Route – massive boulders are strewn about the gently flowing Goulburn River. Another good picnic spot. Continue along Ringwood Road into the Goulburn River National Park to Lee’s Pinch Lookout (83km) - a wellmarked 800m loop walking track with three lookouts providing exhilarating, extensive views over the park. This really is a must on this drive! Continue on the Ringwood Road to the T-intersection at the Golden Highway (114km) and turn right to Merriwa. Detour – Turn left to visit Cassilis 37km before returning along the Golden highway to Merriwa. Cassilis is a heritage listed town. Visit Merriwa (120km) - a little country town with a Welcoming Centre, Sports Club, café and bakery, Caroline’s Café and Stone Hill Vineyard. Continue on the Golden Highway to Ellamara (148km), on the right, is worth a visit before arriving back at Sandy Hollow for a well earned rest!
