Primero habrá que señalar que la población latina de Nebraska está creciendo rápidamente. Se espera incluso que se triplique en los próximos 35 años, generando grandes aportes económicos, al saber que su crecimiento poblacional vendrá acompañado de un crecimiento de negocios propiedad de latinos en el estado.

En este sentido, el Centro para la Investigación de Asuntos Públicos, que es el organismo coordinador del Centro de Datos del Estado de Nebraska, ha publicado que las empresas latinas de Nebraska se han duplicado desde el 2007 y está contribuyendo con más de 17 millones en impuestos.

De manera local, este crecimiento ha sido palpable al incluirse nuevos destinos comerciales, como lo es hoy el distrito comercial de la calle Vinton. Ahí se ubican 96 propiedades. 59 de ellas son para uso comercial y las restantes 36 para uso habitacional.

En este momento, 60 por ciento de los negocios son propiedad de latinos.

De hecho, expertos financieros dicen que los hispanos están iniciando negocios tres veces la tasa nacional, impulsando la economía, fortaleciendo a las familias hispanas y cambiando el color de la calle Vinton.

“Las cosas nunca dejan de cambiar. Lo digo porque nunca antes el éxito de las pequeñas empresas en dicho distrito comercial había sido más dependiente del éxito de las familias hispanas”, señalo Shannon McClure de la Gran Cámara de Comercio de Omaha.

Sin embargo, las disparidades siguen presentes. Basta mencionar que el hogar hispano promedio vale 10 veces menos que el hogar blanco, de acuerdo datos de la Reserva Federal publicados por el Pew Research Center.

Afortunadamente el crecimiento se está dando y este factor juega un importante papel doble, “El hecho de tener nuevos empresarios latinos, ya sea en la calle Vinton o en el resto de la ciudad o incluso del país, nos permite visualizar que el éxito de sus pequeñas empresas es clave para fortalecer a las familias hispanas y cerrar la brecha de la riqueza en Estados Unidos”, dijo McClure.

En términos generales, el auge comercial en Vinton ha tenido sus altas y bajas. “A principios de 1900, el crecimiento de la población se reflejaba en este centro comercial, que brindaba diversos servicios básicos”, indicó Cheri Rockwell de la división de planeación de la ciudad de Omaha.

“Era hermoso. El esplendor se veía en edificios construidos en esa época, 1890-1923, con diversos estilos arquitectónicos, los cuales hoy se han sumado a la lista de construcciones de importancia histórica…17 edificios”.

Hubo un momento en que las cosas comenzaron a decaer. Cerca de 1980 la calle Vinton era una parte abandonada de la ciudad. Había muchas tiendas vacías y muy poco tráfico peatonal.

Los latinos que llegaban preferían asentarse en los alrededores de la calle 24. Sin embargo, el crecimiento paulatino fue obligándoles a ramificar sus zonas de vivienda y comercio, alcanzando nuevamente a la calle Vinton.

Esto significó nuevos cambios de propiedades, negocios y personas sobre el distrito comercial de la calle Vinton, hasta lograr lo que hoy en día se puede palpar a simple vista: nuevos negocios latinos y un tráfico constante en los alrededores durante el día.

De hecho, de las 59 propiedades con uso comercial de esta zona, solo hay 3 espacios que tienen sus puertas cerradas. Lo que anteriormente albergaba poblaciones históricamente significativos de irlandeses, polacos, e inmigrantes de Europa del Este, hoy luce un aspecto hispano, que alberga una economía de consumo totalmente bilingüe.

OBSTÁCULOS

Sin embargo, a pesar del fuerte crecimiento de los negocios latinos en dicha zona, todavía se enfrentan a muchos obstáculos para evitar fracasar.

Muchos son nuevos, no tienen un plan de negocios y carecen de capital, lo cual les brinda pocas posibilidades de supervivencia.

Por otro lado, según los expertos, el acceso al capital es definitivamente el talón de Aquiles.

“Muchos no comprenden el sistema financiero de este país e incluso no tienen acceso a los bancos, lo cual les impide tener más dinero para crecer”, dijo Marta Sonia Londoño Mejía, de Midlands Latino Community Development Corporation, MLCDC por sus siglas en inglés.

En este sentido, sobresale que, de acuerdo con un informe publicado en el 2015 por Rutgers, los empresarios hispanos y negros siguen siendo discriminados en la búsqueda de préstamos para pequeñas empresas por parte de los bancos.

“Aun que hay latinos que no buscan prestamos bancarios porque en sus países acostumbran a pagar todo por adelantado y en efectivo. Lo cual esta bien, pero también frena la posibilidad de realizar nuevas ideas que permitan el crecimiento y/o estabilidad a largo plazo”, dijo Londoño.

Por suerte, hay instancias que buscan adaptar sus servicios a la población hispana, para buscar su igualdad en el acceso a servicios, creando sistemas fáciles de micro prestamos.

La más cercana es MLCDC, quien tiene una historia de 10 años brindando a los latinos oportunidades de crecimiento económico para un futuro sostenible. Lo cual incluye prestamos para micro empresarios, sin importar la condición migratoria.

A principios de año anuncio haber recibido un premio del Departamento del Tesoro, de $125,000 que serán destinados para fortalecer su programa de micro préstamos que indudablemente considera a negociantes de la calle Vinton.

SERVICIOS

En cuestión de servicios públicos, en una pasada reunión de locatarios de la calle Vinton con la ciudad de Omaha, se expuso la preocupación del alcantarillado, pues el agua de lluvia a menudo abruma alcantarillas de la ciudad.

Gratamente, la calle Vinton fue considerada en la construcción de cámaras subterráneas de aguas pluviales, de acuerdo con Timoteo Papstein, gerente de proyecto de obras públicas.

Aquí se han considerado 10 acres alrededor de las calles 35 y Vinton, con un costo de $2,9 millones, para ser reembolsado por el Distrito de Recursos Naturales del Río Papio-Missouri y por parte de los fondos de alcantarillado de la ciudad.

Las mejoras han incluido también la demolición de casas clausuradas, la rehabilitación de otras y la construcción de nuevas viviendas. Definitivamente la revitalización de la calle Vinton sigue siendo una prioridad para la división de desarrollo comunitario.

Por todo lo anterior, es posible resumir que hay un impulso claro en el distrito comercial de la calle Vinton y muchos grupos, comerciantes y líderes comunitarios están trabajando juntos para que sea un corredor comercial próspero.

La comunidad que actualmente circula por estas calles, pueden palpar su crecimiento y apreciar los diferentes matices culturales y sociales que diferencian las distintas identidades hispanas que están forjando proyectos de vida en esta zona, inyectando un renovado sentido de orgullo por pertenecer al histórico pasaje comercial de la calle Vinton.

We must first mention that the Latino population in Nebraska is rapidly growing - it is expected to triple over the next 35 years, generating great financial benefits due to the expected increase in Latino-owned businesses in Nebraska.

On that note, the Center for Public Affairs Research, which is part of the Nebraska State Data Center, has published that the number of Latino companies in Nebraska has doubled since 2007, contributing over $17 million in taxes.

At the local level, said growth can be seen thanks to the new businesses that have popped up at the Vinton St. business district. There are 96 properties there: 59 are businesses and 36 exist for housing purposes. Right now, 60 percent of said businesses are Latino-owned.

In fact, financial experts state that Latinos are creating businesses at three times over the national rate, boosting the economy, making Latino families stronger and bringing a new twist to Vinton St. “Things never stop changing. I say this because never before had the success of small businesses at said business district depend so much on the success of Latino families,” said Shannon McClure of the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce.

However, disparities are still present. According to data from the Federal Reserve published by the Pew Research Center, the average Latino home is worth ten times less than the home of a white family.

Luckily, things continue to improve and this plays a double role: “The fact of having new Latino entrepreneurs, be that at Vinton St. or in the rest of the city or even in the rest of the country, allows us to visualize how the success of small businesses is key to manage to strengthen the Latino family and to close the wealth gap in the United States,” said McClure.

HISTORY

In general, businesses on Vinton St. have had their ups and downs.

“At the start of the 1990s, the increase in population was reflected as this shopping area that provided several basic services,” said Cheri Rockwell at the Planning Division of the City of Omaha.

“It was beautiful. You could see the splendor of all the buildings from that era [18901923], with a wide range of architectural styles, which today are part of the list of historically important buildings [17 buildings].”

There was a moment when things started to decay. Around 1980, Vinton St. was an abandoned part of the city. There were many empty stores and not many people walked through there. The Latinos that arrived at the city decided to settle closer to 24th St. However, the continuous growth of the population forced to diversify their housing and business locations, until they eventually once again reached Vinton St. This meant that there were a lot of changes in ownership of the properties and businesses in the business district of Vinton St. Today, we can easily glance at a new reality: Lots of new Latino businesses and a constant influx of people walking through there and its surrounding areas all day long.

In fact, out of the 59 properties in the business area, there are only three locations with their doors closed to the public.

An area that was historically known for including large communities of Irish, Polish and Eastern

European immigrants today has a very Latino look to it, with a completely bilingual economy.

OBSTACLES

However, despite the strong growth of Latino businesses in the area, there are still many obstacles that must be overcome to avoid failure. Many are new to this, don’t have a business plan and lack the required capital, and all of this makes it harder for them to survive.

According to experts, lack of access to capital is definitely their Achilles heel.

“Many don’t understand the financial system of this country and they even don’t have access to banks, and this makes it harder for them to secure more funds to make their business grow,” said Marta Sonia Londoño Mejia from the Midlands Latino Community Development Corporation (MLCDC).

On that note, we must highlight that, according to a 2015 study from Rutgers University, Latino and African American entrepreneurs continue to be discriminated when searching for small businesses loans from banks.

“Nevertheless, due to their culture, Latino usually don’t seek bank loans because in their countries they most of the time pay for everything in advance and in cash. This is great, but it also reduces their options for putting into action new ideas that can allow them to grow and/or to give them some stability in the long term,” said Londoño.

Luckily there are some organizations that are trying to adapt their services to what the Latino community needs, so that they can have access to more services by creating simple microloan systems.

The one closest to this situation is the MLCDC since for over ten years it has been providing Latinos with great opportunities to improve their financial situation to have a sustainable future. This includes loans for micro-entrepreneurs, no matter their current migratory status.

At the start of the year, it announced it had received an award from the Department of the Treasury for $125,000 that will be used to strengthen its microloans program that undoubtedly takes into consideration the merchants of Vinton St.

Regarding the public services from the city, in the last meeting between those who owned a business on Vinton St. and the city of Omaha, they talked about their concerns about the sewer system, because the rainwater is usually too much for the sewers in the city.

It is great to know that Vinton St. has been considered for the construction of subterranean chambers for rainwater, this according to Timoteo Papstein, Public Works Manager.

For said purpose, 10 acres around 35th and Vinton Sts. have been considered at a cost of $2.9 million that will be reimbursed by the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District and in part from the sewage funds of the city.

The improvements have also included the demolition of foreclosed homes, the rehabilitation of others as well as the construction of new ones.

Without a doubt, the revitalization of Vinton St. continues to be a priority for the Community Development Division.

Because of all the above, we can state that there’s a clear push for the business district of Vinton St. and many groups, merchants and community leaders are working together to make this a successful and burgeoning area.

The community that currently walks through these streets can feel how it continues to grow, and they can really appreciate the many cultural and social nuances of each of the Latino groups that are building new life projects in the area, injecting a renewed sense of pride for being part of the historic business district of Vinton St.

l Huffington Post desmanteló el alegato sin fundamentos del candidato presidencial Republicano Marco Rubio de que hay más inmigrantes indocumentados en los Estados Unidos ahora que hace cinco años.

Durante su participación del 31 de enero en el programa de NBC Meet The Press, Rubio le dijo al presentador Chuck Todd que “estamos peor ahora de lo que estábamos hace cinco años.

Tenemos más inmigrantes ilegales acá”. Como la reportera del Huffington Post Elise Foley señaló en un artículo del 1 de febrero, Chuck Todd no presionó al candidato sobre la validez de sus estadísticas. A pesar de la evidencia de que la población indocumentada ha venido decreciendo desde 2008, los candidatos Republicanos han tomado posturas anti-inmigración y han usado retórica alarmista en contra de los inmigrantes que hace eco de las voces más extremas de los medios conservadores.

El número alcanzó su pico en 2007 con 12.2 millones de inmigrantes indocumentados, de acuerdo a lo estimado por Pew. El Center for Migration Studies, otro tanque de pensamiento, publicó este mes un reporte basado en datos del Censo estimando que había 10.9 millones de inmigrantes indocumentados para 2014 -- el nivel más bajo que esta población ha alcanzado desde 2003. he Huffington Post debunked Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio’s unsubstantiated claim that there are more undocumented immigrants in the U.S. now than there were five years ago.

During a January 31 appearance on NBC’s Meet The Press, Rubio told host Chuck Todd that “we are worse off today than we were five years ago. We have more illegal immigrants here.” As Huffington Post reporter Elise Foley pointed out on a February 1 article, Chuck Todd didn’t press the candidate on the validity of his stats. Despite evidence that the undocumented immigrant population has been declining since 2008, Republican candidates have increasingly taken anti-immigrant stances and spouted alarmist anti-immigrant rhetoric that echoes the most extreme voices on right-wing media.

Foley cited data from Pew Research Center to indicate that the undocumented “population has remained essentially stable for five years,” directly contradicting Rubio’s claim. She also pointed to a report from the Center for Migration Studies that demonstrates that in 2014, the undocumented population reached its lowest point since 2003 and that it has continued to decline since. Citing some of the same data, Politifact also rated Rubio’s claim as false. As

reported by Foley, Rubio has been using the same undocumented population estimates -11 million to 12 million -- for the past three years (emphasis added): Republican presidential hopeful and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio paints himself as the most informed and realistic candidate when it comes to immigration reform. He spent months helping draft a comprehensive immigration reform bill in 2013, and has spent even longer defending it.

So it seems like he should be especially aware of how many undocumented immigrants are in the U.S. -- and the fact that the number has leveled off or even decreased in recent years.

Rubio said the opposite Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“We are worse off today than we were five years ago,” he told host Chuck Todd. “We have more illegal immigrants here.”

tisan think tank, estimated last year that there were 11.3 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. in 2014, and that the “population has remained essentially stable for five years.” The number peaked in 2007 with 12.2 million undocumented immigrants, according to Pew estimates.

Center for Migration Studies, another think tank, released a report based on Census figures this month estimating there were 10.9 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. as of 2014 -- the smallest the population has been since 2003. The number has been on the decline since 2008, according to the Center for Migration Studies.

Rubio has been saying for years that there are 11 million to 12 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. -- he used that figure in 2013, the year the Senate passed its comprehensive reform bill, and has cited it during the current campaign.

Other Republicans have also said the undocumented population is larger than it is, although with more specifics. Front-runner Donald Trump said last year that there were more than 30 million people living in the U.S. without authorization -- a claim for which Politifact found no basis, other than statements from conservative columnist Ann Coulter.

Una década después, Castro sigue ayudando a familias hispanas en su lucha por obtener una casa propia POR MARINA ROSADO

tan solo 8 días después de haber contraído matrimonio en México, Oneyda López y su esposo decidieron viajar a Estados Unidos para labrarse un porvenir. La apresurada decisión quizás a muchos les pareció una locura o bien una aventura muy arriesgada, pero para ella, una mujer de fe inquebrantable, se trató simplemente de “hacer lo correcto”.

Originaria del estado de Guanajuato, López tuvo tres hijos, dos mujeres y un varón, y al lado de su esposo ha luchado en todo momento por sacarlos adelante durante los 20 años que llevan en este país sorteando una serie de dificultades, retos a los que se enfrenta cualquier inmigrante que prácticamente inicia su vida desde cero.

Desde que se convirtió en madre, uno de los sueños más grandes de López era el de poder adquirir una casa, con el espacio adecuado para que sus hijos vivieran cómodamente y en un vecindario donde crecieran seguros y felices. Pero ya habían pasado diez años y parecía que todavía existían algunos obstáculos por superar en el camino.

Sin embargo, después de escuchar el consejo de su buena amiga Lisa Álvarez, López contactó al agente de bienes raíces Ricardo Castro quien rápidamente la ayudó a adquirir el hogar que tanto deseaba y pasó a convertirse en “una bendición muy linda” para la familia.

Hoy en día, el hijo mayor de López está educándose seriamente sobre el proceso para comprar una casa y parece muy comprometido en lograrlo: “Tenemos la esperanza de que así suceda, mi esposo y yo le hemos enseñado a ser responsable y a que el crédito no es un juego. Yo lo he estado animando, pero sabemos que todo a su tiempo. ¡Siempre hay que empezar de abajo para arriba!”

Justamente así reconoce que comenzó su carrera en el mercado de la compra, venta y alquiler de inmuebles, Ricardo Castro, quien tras cumplir 13 años como agente, está

“gratamente sorprendido” y muy satisfecho de poder ayudar a la misma familia, una década después: “Su hijo cumplió 19 años y la ley del estado de Nebraska permite a las personas de 19 para arriba, el poder comprar una propiedad de bienes raíces”.

Según Castro, el panorama actual para adquirir una casa es mucho más prometedor y accesible que hace 12 años cuando él compró la suya, debido a que las tasas de interés, factor que determina la mensualidad a pagar por una propiedad, se encuentran muy bajas para la persona que compra por primera vez. Algo así como “un poquito menos del 4%, lo que significa un récord histórico”.

Y si bien el 2016 debido al frío extremoso comenzó un poco lento para el mercado de bienes raíces, Castro señaló que “parece que ‘Papá Lindo’, como dicen en mi tierra, levantó el switch hace unos días y de un momento a otro hay muchas llamadas y estamos muy ocupados”.

Castro lejos de concentrase únicamente en Omaha, ha colocado propiedades comerciales en lugares como Lincoln, Fremont y Murray, aquí en Nebraska y en Sioux City, Iowa, donde también tiene licencia.

Para él, el cliente hispano “es una persona muy progresista” que una vez adquirida su casa, se lanza a la búsqueda de locales en zonas con mayor afluencia de tráfico para instalar su negocio y en ése caso, qué mejor que Omaha, “una ciudad con segmentos específicos para cada comprador”.

Y a propósito de compradores, Castro ha dictado talleres gratuitos sobre el tema, colaborando con instituciones de crédito en espacios accesibles a la comunidad hispana como el Kroc Center, donde los interesados aprenden que el primer paso en este proceso es acudir al banco para revisar sus finanzas, ya que el historial de crédito reflejará si será posible adquirir o no un préstamo, tomando en cuenta que cual-

quier comprador igualmente deberá demostrar estabilidad laboral.

Hacer la transacción de la compra de un inmueble teniendo al banco como aliado, genera que “el enganche sea menor, así como la mensualidad de arranque, y lo principal es que la casa estará a su nombre desde el primer día”, así mismo es vital que los contratos sean por escrito, ampliamente revisados, y es ideal finiquitar la transacción con un cheque que sirva como comprobante.

Lograr que trámites que pudieran resultar engorrosos como los anteriores, se vuelvan sencillos y fáciles de comprender para el cliente es la tarea de Castro, quien hace tiempo fundó la compañía Castro Realtors Group bajo la empresa Nebraska Realty donde colaboran Erick Cano, Plácido Bustamante, Marcos Mora y el joven que ha impuesto récords de ventas, Melvin Melendéz. Todos destacados agentes “con los mismos principios y la misma ética, bilingües y con la responsabilidad y la obligación de respetar las leyes de bienes raíces del estado de Nebraska”.

Han transcurrido 15 años desde que Castro salió de Perú con solamente $500 en el bolsillo pero con el firme anhelo de alcanzar una vida mejor y por eso se identifica tanto con la mayoría de sus clientes que son familias hispanas, compradores por primera vez. De ahí que la meta más importante de su trabajo sea la de obtener la mejor transacción para cada cliente, “porque para los hispanos, la casa no es un negocio, es un hogar donde se crean historias, donde se crían hijos, donde se hacen recuerdos”.

FIRMA DE MEMORÁNDUM DE ENTENDIMIENTO El 22 de febrero de 2016, se celebró en las instalaciones del Consulado de México en Omaha la ceremonia oficial de la Firma de Memorándum de Entendimiento entre el Consulado de México y la Procuraduría de Justicia de los Estados Unidos para el Distrito de Nebraska, sobre Asistencia Jurídica Adecuada a Nacionales Mexicanos Víctimas del Delito en Nebraska.

El citado Memorándum de Entendimiento permitirá fortalecer la relación de colaboración con la Fiscalía del Distrito de Nebraska para alcanzar objetivos comunes, en particular la protección y el respeto de los derechos de los mexicanos que residan o viajen en Nebraska y que hayan sido víctimas del delito, independientemente de su estatus migratorio.

Durante el proceso de negociación con la Procuraduría, la Representación Consular en Omaha propuso y formalizó la inclusión de una cláusula enfocada a la protección de las mujeres migrantes, siendo con ello el primer documento de su tipo donde se reconocen las vulnerabilidades que tiene la mujer migrante por su condición de género y que la expone en una mayor medida a convertirse en víctima de delitos diversos.

La Cónsul Guadalupe Sánchez transmitió un mensaje a la comunidad mexicana en el que señaló que mediante la firma de este documento, se alcanzarán objetivos comunes que contribuirán con el estado de derecho, así como con la promoción de garantías que la ley confiere a los mexicanos. A su vez, la Fiscal Deborah Gilg dio un mensaje a la comunidad mexicana en español y calificó la ceremonia de firma del Memorándum de Entendimiento como un “evento histórico” por su contenido y por el compromiso de trabajar conjuntamente con el Consulado a favor de la defensa y promoción de los derechos humanos de los connacionales.

Estos soñadores no pueden solicitar beneficios públicos, incluyendo ayuda financiera federal y muchas becas mas. A causa de estas restricciones a fondos públicos, Verdadero Potencial utiliza el cien por ciento de donaciones privadas y fondos institucionales públicos.

En 2014-2015, se donaron cinco becas completas a estudiantes elegibles. Durante el segundo año, 2015-2016, Verdadero Potencial otorgó siete becas completas. Este año se desea crear mas oportunidades con estas becas a mas gente joven y con la ayuda de la comunidad se pueden abrir puertas para que los becarios alcancen su verdadero potencial.

or Quezada, who was born in Los Ángeles, Cal., that was a very valuable first impression: “I grew up in a neighborhood where Mexican culture was very strong.”

After only eight days of being married, Oneyda Lopez and her husband decided to travel to the United States to work on building a future for them. For many people, such an unexpected idea probably seemed like a crazy thing to do or perhaps as a very risky adventure, but for her - a woman with an unbreakable faith - it was simply about “doing the right thing.”

Originally from the State of Guanajuato Lopez had three children - two girls and one boy and, alongside her husband, has always fought hard to provide for her family over the twenty years they have lived in the country, overcoming the many challenges faced by immigrants since everyone pretty much has to start from scratch. From the moment, she became a mother she had dreamed of being able to buy a house big enough for her family to comfortably live in, located in a neighborhood where they could grow up safe and happy. But after ten years of trying, it felt as if there were still many obstacles to overcome.

However, after listening to the advice of her good friend Lisa Alvarez, Lopez contacted real estate agent Ricardo Castro, who quickly helped her secure the hole she wanted, becoming “a very nice blessing” for the family.

Today their eldest son is learning everything there is to know about the process of buying a house, and he seems very committed to achieving it: “We hope he succeeds. My husband and I have taught him to be responsible because using credit is not a game. We have been encouraging him, but we know that everything takes time. You always have to start at the bottom before you can get to the top!”

Ricardo Castro got started many years ago in the business of buying, selling and leasing real estate. After thirteen years as an agent, he is “pleasantly surprised” and very happy to be able to help the same family over a decade later: “Their son is now nineteen years old and laws for the State of Nevada state that those who are nineteen years old and up can purchase a property.”

According to Castro, nowadays things are better and make buying a house a better proposition than it was twelve years ago when he bought his own house – this is due to how interest rates (this determines the monthly payments that need to be made for a property) are very low for someone who is buying their first home. Said rates right now are “a little less than 4%, which is a historically low-interest rate.”

And even though the real estate business in 2016 was up to a slow start due to the extreme cold weather, Castro mentioned that “it seems ‘Papa Lindo,’ as they say back in my country, finally flipped the switch a few days ago, because suddenly we were getting many calls for appointments and now we’re very busy.”

Castro does not only focus on Omaha, and he’s actually set up several business properties at locations such as Lincoln, Fremont and Murray in Nebraska, as well as at Sioux City, Iowa, where he is also a licensed agent.

For him, the Latino client “is a very progressive person” who, after purchasing a house, quickly sets out to find business properties in great locations with lots of traffic so that they can setup a business. For this, there’s no place better than Omaha, “a city with specific segments for each buyer.”

And speaking of buyers, Castro has imparted several free workshops on the subject, collaborating with financial institutions at locations that the Latino community can easily visit, as is the case of the Kroc Center. People

can then learn that the first step in the process is going to a bank so that they can review their finances because their credit history will reflect if they can be approved for a loan – and all buyers must also prove they have job stability.

Purchasing a property with the bank on your side makes it so that “the down payment and the first monthly payment are much lower, and the house will be on your name from the first day.” Something else to consider is that all contracts should be in writing and that you must review them in full. It is also ideal that the transaction is taken care of by using a check so that you have everything documented.

Making processes like this easier for a client to understand is what Castro does. He funded Castro Realtors Group under Nebraska Realty many years ago where he works along with Erick Cano, Placido Bustamante, Marcos Mora and Melvin Melendez, a young agent who has set many sales records. They’re all highly qualified agents “with the same principals and work ethic, and they’re also bilingual – they’re very responsible and work by the real estate laws of the State of Nebraska.”

It has been fifteen years since Castro left Peru with only $500 in his pocket but with a determination to have a better life, and this is why he identifies with his clients because most of them are Latino families who are first time buyers. This is why his goal is to find the best transaction for each client “because, for Latinos, a home is not a business, it is a place where stories are built, where they race their kids, where memories are created.”

SIGNING MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING The Consulate of Mexico in Omaha and the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Nebraska during an official ceremony signed the Memorandum of Understanding regarding adequate legal assistance for Mexican Nationals Victims of Crime in Nebraska, on February 22.

This Memorandum of Understanding will strengthen the partnership between the US Attorney’s Office and the Mexican Consulate to achieve common objectives, including the protection and respect for the rights of Mexicans living or traveling in Nebraska who have been victims of crime, regardless of their immigration status.

The Memorandum of Understanding stands as an instrument that strengthens the bonds of cooperation between the two institutions and at the same time, contribute to the building of a trust relationship.

During the negotiation process with the US Attorney’s Office, the Consular Representation in Omaha proposed and formalized the inclusion of a clause, which focused on the protection of migrant women, being the first document of its kind whereby the vulnerabilities of women migrants are recognized as well as the fact that for the gender factor, women are exposed in a greater extent to be victims of crime.

Consul Guadalupe Sanchez Salazar gave a message to the Mexican community where she pointed out the common goals between the two institutions.

U.S. Attorney Deborah Gilg affirmed that this is a historical event underlining the endeavor to facilitate access to justice to Mexicans victims of crime.

TRUE POTENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP CHARITY DINNER Save the date for the True Potential Scholarship Dinner in Honor of Jesusita and Santos Baros Courage and Fortitude Funds, and hosted by Ross and Karen Pesek on June 16, 5:30 p.m., at Metropolitan Community College, Fort Campus, Swanson Conference Center Building 22.

The True Potential scholarship focuses on creating opportunities for young immigrants who have Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) immigration status. These DREAMers are not eligible for any public benefits, including federal financial aid and many scholarships. Because of the public funds restriction, True Potential uses 100 per cent private donations and private institutional funds.

In 2014-2015, five full tuition and fee scholarships were awarded to eligible students. In their second year, 2015-2016, True Potential awarded seven full tuition and fee scholarships. This year, the scholarship will create more opportunities for more young people and with community help they can open doors for scholarship recipients and allow them to fulfill their true potential.

They have been very successful so far, working to partner with the four community colleges these students are attending. With their agreement to match their funds for each student’s education, it is their hope to continue to expand this program in the future, supporting the initial five students, in their second year seven students and more recipients in the years to come.

El pasado 22 de febrero fallecio el Ingeniero Colombiano ALVARO NUÑEZ, miembro importante en nuestra comunidad latina, quien fuera pilar fundador de la Cámara de Comercio Hispana de Nebraska. Basics Class of Mental Illness

Este evento público es gratuito, y consiste en un curso de seis sesiones para los padres y otros cuidadores de niños y adolescentes que viven con enfermedades mentales.

Será impartido por miembros de NAMI, que tienen niños con enfermedades mentales. los fundamentos de NAMI permite que las familias se conecten entre sí mientras aprenden acerca de la enfermedad mental, al tiempo que se capacitan a sí mismos para superar nuevos retos. This public event is a free, six-session course for parents and other primary caregivers of children and adolescents living with mental illness. It is taught by trained NAMI family members who have children with mental illness.

NAMI Basics allows families to connect to one another while learning about mental illness and empowering themselves to overcome new challenges.
