on gran éxito se presento un evento que funge como una ventana a la diversidad cultural que involucró a jóvenes estudiantes de secundaria de las Escuelas Publicas de Omaha (OPS), miembros también de un club que comienza a resonar fuertemente en la ciudad: El Club de Liderazgo Thrive.

Es innegable que hoy en día tanto la escuela como la sociedad está viviendo una época de cambios. El desarrollo de una serie de acontecimientos históricos en el ámbito escolar, los procesos migratorios, así como la necesidad de establecer un desarrollo integral del alumnado por parte de la escuela como sustituto en muchos casos del ámbito social familiar, necesita en muchos casos el desarrollo de nuevas estrategias que permitan una mejor conjunción de estas acciones.

Por ello, sale a la luz el trabajo que están haciendo cuatro líderes estudiantiles dentro del distrito escolar de OPS. Ellos son: Juan Cangas, Ba Blue Taddy, Laura Weiss y Evelia Gutierez. Todos ellos miembros del personal de OPS y dirigentes (coach) del club de liderazgo estudiantil llamado Thrive.

En su trabajo con estudiantes, más propiamente con Thrive, profundizan y potencializan un área que podría generar numerosas ventajas como estrategia en una educación intercultural e inclusiva.

Se trata de la cultura y el arte como estrategia de inclusión social y escolar.

Es aquí donde destaca el Evento Cultural Mundial Thrive, que por tercer año consecutivo se realiza en las instalaciones de la escuela preparatoria del Sur. Sus orígenes se deben al apoyo económico brindado por el South Omaha Community Care Council (SOCCC), quien les otorgo una beca económica a todas las escuelas del distrito escolar de OPS, dándoles la libertad de realizar la actividad que cada quien eligiese.

Estratégicamente, los estudiantes de South decidieron unirse a los de Central, para juntos crear algo grande y trascendente. Así, actuaron de manera estratégica, tomando la decisión de realizar una actividad que más haya de beneficiarles a ellos mismos, sirviera para la comunidad.

“La primera tarea que los estudiantes decidieron hacer fue salir a las calles para poder realizar una encuesta en el vecindario, en la que también incluirían la opinión de sus propios familiares”, explicó Evelia.

“Al final, los resultados que juntaron les permitieron descubrir que había varias cosas que las familias habían dicho que tenia miedo de perder en este país.

Una de ellas la cultura”, agregó.

De esta manera, en el 2014 presentaron una actividad que incluyo 4 carpas internacionales repletas de cultura visual, auditiva, degustativa y coreográfica, concluyendo con una asistencia de 350 personas.

Motivados, en el 2015 remasterizaron las cosas y cuadriplicaron los resultados, al contabilizar la presencia de 1200 per-

sonas, unificando a las cinco secundarias del distrito.

Este año, los resultados fueron los esperados. Más personas, más actividades y más estudiantes orgullosos del trabajo en equipo realizado, que resulto del agrado de las 2,000 personas asistentes.

Fue maravilloso ver como toda una comunidad presente, de alumnos y padres de familia, disfrutaban su identidad grupal, entre diversos grupos que diferían en sus características. Y es precisamente esa concepción de diferencia la que nos presento una sociedad multicultural y plural, conviviendo en armonía.

Cada uno de los pabellones y carpas mostraron un concepto que artesanalmente elaboro el estudiantado, totalizando 320 voluntarios.

El objetivo para los integrantes del Club Thrive, fue exponer lo mejor de sus orígenes en cinco pabellones dedicados a vestimenta, comida, lenguaje, historia, arte, música, danza y religión.

Gratamente, no solo fue un trabajo bien hecho, pues las bastas horas que invirtieron en la preparación del evento se reflejo al mostrar algo estético, lleno de significado, ideas, propuestas y matices, convirtiendo el evento en un continuo examen de nuestra conciencia perceptiva, que amigablemente expuso la diversidad que viven actualmente las Escuelas Públicas de Omaha.

Esto es lo que han logrado Juan, Laura, Ba Blue y Evelia, como cabezas del club, un evento convertido ya en una forma de expresión, que emociona y educa.

“Queremos mencionar de manera especial el trabajo que por mucho tiempo realizó Eric Goodell, como uno más de los dirigentes del club (coach)”, dijo Evelia.

Agregando: “El fue uno de los fundadores de Thrive junto con Juan Cangas hace más de cinco años. Su ayuda fue invaluable por que es una persona muy soñadora y con su visión hemos logrado llegar a este nivel.

Sin embargo, no seguirá más en OPS debido a otros llamados de Dios”.

Así es. Un trabajo en equipo que con una propuesta clara, han logrado la función de cultivar a los presentes, llevando a éstos arte y tradiciones de otras culturas para así fomentar un acercamiento al país propio y al país amigo.

Por que no siempre es fácil abordar las diferencias culturales entre las personas, en muchos casos son temas en demasía delicados o en otros no se encuentra una forma viable de introducirlos. Por ello, es aquí donde la educación cultural y artística entra en juego, pues a través de ella puede abordarse cualquier cultura, cualquier tema controvertido o necesario. Por que el arte es una ventana al mundo y el Club Thrive se esta aprovechando positivamente de ello.

En definitiva, el Evento Cultural Mundial Thrive establece la importancia del arte, la cultura y la educación artística como estrategia para una educación inclusiva e intercultural, convirtiéndose en la mejor ventana que existe a otras culturas.

Thrive Worldwide Cultural Event Ends On A High Note ____________________________________________________________________

he Thrive Worldwide Cultural Event was a huge success, serving as a window towards cultural diversity. It involved the work of young high school students from Omaha Public Schools (OPS), kids who are also members of a club that is becoming stronger in the city: the Thrive Leadership Club.

We can’t deny that are living in a time full of changes, both at schools and in society. The development of a series of historic events on a school level, the migratory processes, as well as the need to establish an allaround development program for students at schools as a substitute for a nonexistent social family environment, all of it demands the development of new strategies that allow for a better integration of all of these actions.

Because of this, the work of four student leaders in the OPS school district shines through. Said leaders are: Juan Cangas, Ba Blue Taddy, Laura Weiss and Evelia Gutierez. They’re part of the OPS staff as well as coaches of the Thrive Leadership Club.

In their work with students through Thrive, they examine and potentiate an area that could generate many advantages to help create a strategy for an intercultural and inclusive education. It is about culture and art as a strategy for inclusion at school and in society.

It is why the Worldwide Thrive Cultural Event, held for a third consecutive year at South High, is so important.

It started thanks to the financial support from the South Omaha Community Care Council (SOCCC) who provided a scholarship to all schools within the OPS district, giving them the freedom to apply said funds to carry out any activity they choose.

Students at South High strategically decided work with Central High to be able to carry out a larger and more significant project. Instead of focusing on something to benefit them, they decided to work on something that could benefit the community.

“The first thing the students decided to do was go out on the streets to poll people from the neighborhood, a poll where they also included the opinions of their relatives,” explained Evelia.

“In the end, all the answers they gathered allowed them to discover there were many things that families in this country are afraid of losing, and one of them is their culture,” she added.

After their research, in 2014, they presented an activity that included four international tents full of visual, audio, dance and food showcasing culture as a whole, making it an event that received over 350 people.

Motivated by this, in 2015 they doubled their efforts and quadrupled their results after over 1,200 people visited the event, bringing together all five high schools from the district.

For 2016, the results from the activity were great, as expected. More people,

more activities and more students proud of their teamwork managed to bring over 2,000 people to the event.

It was wonderful to see the whole community at the event, from students to parents, all enjoying their identity as a group, even when they’re all part of smaller groups with different characteristics. And it is precisely said differences that allowed us to witness a multicultural and plural community, all its members together in harmony.

Each one of the pavilions and tents presented a homogeneous concept crafted by the students, thanks to the efforts of 320 volunteers.

The goal of the members of the Thrive Club was to the best elements of their origins at the five pavilions dedicated to clothing, food, language, history, art, music, dance and religion.

They did a fantastic job, and the many hours they spent working hard on the event allowed them to present a project full of meaning, ideas, proposals and subtleties, turning the event into a constant reflection on our perceptive consciousness, showcasing the great diversity that is part of the reality of Omaha Public Schools.

This is what Juan, Laura, Ba Blue and Evelia have managed to do as coaches for the club, giving us an event that has become a form of expression, educating and thrilling its audience.

“We want to give a special mention to the work of Eric Goodell, who for a long tine worked as one of the coaches for the club,” said Evelia. “He was one of the founders of Thrive, along with Juan Cangas, over five years ago. His help was invaluable because he’s a dreamer, and his vision helped us to make it this far.

However, he will no longer be part of OPS as he has to answer God’s calling.”

Working as a team towards a common goal has allowed them to reach many people, bringing to them the art and traditions of other cultures to encourage them to get closer to their own country as well as to the country that has welcomed them with open arms.

It’s not always easy to talk about the cultural differences of people, and in many cases they are very delicate topics or they are topics that are hard to discuss.

It is then that cultural and artistic education comes into play because thanks to them one can present any culture and discuss any controversial or important topic.

Art is a window into the world, and the Thrive Club is using this to bring something positive to the community.

The Thrive Worldwide Cultural Event showcases the importance of art, culture and artistic education as a strategy towards an inclusive and intercultural education, turning into the best way to catch a glimpse of the many cultures in our world.

EL SENIOR CENTER CUMPLE SIETE AÑOS

Por Salvador S. Robles nas, operando solamente tres días por semana. Después de unos meses la organización pasó al Salón de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe desde donde operaron durante un año.

El centro después encontró un espacio más grande en el edificio Sokol en las calles 20 y N. El espacio tenía potencial para crecer pero debido a la necesidad de servir a más adultos mayores tuvieron que buscar un nuevo hogar. Después de 3 años el centro se cambió a su ubicación actual en el piso superior del edificio YMCA en el Sur de Omaha desde donde opera cinco días cada semana.

Padilla comenta: “En alrededor de un año vence nuestro contrato de arrendamiento en esta ubicación por lo que estamos tratando de encontrar un hogar permanente para nuestro centro. Ese siempre ha sido una de nuestras metas principales: encontrar un hogar permanente”.

Celebrando su séptimo año consecutivo, el centro busca todavía continuar sirviendo a los adultos mayores de la comunidad de Omaha con una calidad de alto nivel. El centro sirve a una amplia variedad de adultos mayores de diferentes procedencias. “No servimos solamente a los Latinos. También servimos a la personas de Nepal, a refugiados de Birmania y Sudan. Todos los adultos mayores son bienvenidos en el centro”, dijo Padilla.

n un día normal para Francisca Trujillo, ella puede estar practicando sus increíbles habilidades de cómputo, haciendo Zumba y yoga, practicando costura, además de cantando y bailando, todo ello dentro de un día de cinco horas.

Eso no está nada mal para una mujer de 73 años de edad que pasa gran parte de su tiempo en el domicilio 3010 de la calle R o, mejor dicho, en el Intercultural Senior Center. “Me encanta venir aquí pues es un gran lugar en donde aprender nuevas cosas”, dijo Trujillo.

Francisca es solamente una de alrededor 70 adultos mayores que participan en y asisten diariamente al Intercultural Senior Center. El centro, ubicado en el YMCA del Sur de Omaha, trabaja para servir a los adultos mayores en su actual hogar en el Sur de Omaha Carolina Padilla, la directora ejecutiva, nos comenta: “Este lugar no solamente es un centro con recursos para nuestros adultos mayores, también es un lugar seguro en donde se pueden sentir bien, aprender nuevas cosas y mantenerse activos”.

Hace siete años Carolina comenzó su labor e inició la organización con solamente cinco adultos mayores en un cuarto pequeño.

“Hemos crecido bastante, más aun considerando como iniciamos”, nos dice Padilla.

El centro comenzó a ofrecer sus servicios en marzo de 2009 con unas cuantas perso-

enestar, oportunidades para ejercitarse e inclusive tomar clases para la prueba de ciudadanía son solamente algunas de las actividades y servicios que el centro proporciona a sus ciudadanos adultos mayores. El centro inclusive cuenta con un modo de transporte desde el centro hasta reuniones sociales y excursiones.

“Tenemos tres furgonetas que transportan a nuestros adultos mayores hacia el centro y de vuelta pero no contamos con suficientes transportes como para traer a más adultos mayores desde otras áreas de Omaha. Estamos buscando agregar más en un futuro”, comenta Padilla.

El centro también proporciona alimentos a los adultos mayores con la ayuda de la Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging. Gracias a subvenciones, donaciones y al trabajo de los voluntarios, los adultos mayores pueden disfrutar en el centro de por lo menos un alimento al día.

Como comenta Padilla, sus colaboraciones con la comunidad con instituciones tales como la Universidad de Nebraska en Omaha, la Universidad Creighton y otras organizaciones son vitales para ayudar a mantener los servicios para los adultos mayores en el centro.

“Los adultos mayores en verdad disfrutan de aprender sobre salud y bienestar en las charlas y los talleres que se imparten”, nos dice DeAna Lara quien coordina el programa en el centro. “Muchos de nuestros adultos mayores se benefician con este tipo de talleres pues sí cuentan con algunos prob-

lemas de salud cuando vienen a vernos o bien están luchando contra la depresión”.

De acuerdo con un estudio del 2007 del U.S. Census Bureau, uno de cada tres adultos mayores viven en hogares aislados. Muchos de los adultos mayores que vienen al centro son parte de esta estadística.

“Me encanta venir aquí,” dijo Gaspar Ibarra. Ibarra es uno de muchos adultos mayores que sienten que el centro les brinda de un sentido de comunidad. “Yo no vengo aquí solamente a socializar, vengo aquí pues siento que me ayuda a encontrar solace y darle un sentido a mi vida”, comentó Ibarra.

En los próximos años el centro buscará ser todo lo que necesitan los adultos mayores de la comunidad de Omaha. “Nuestra meta es contar con todos los servicios que nos sea posible para que así los adultos mayores no tengan que viajar por todo Omaha para los cuidados a la salud o servicios que necesitan”, nos dice Padilla.

Padilla concluye: “Esperamos poder brindar la oportunidad a nuestros adultos mayores de tener las alas que necesitan para volar más alto en sus vidas. Un adulto mayor una vez me dijo eso después de que nos visitó. Mientras continuemos teniendo ese efecto en los adultos mayores de nuestra comunidad, pienso que podemos continuar otros siete años más”.

EL SENIOR CENTER CUMPLE SIETE AÑOS Por Salvador S. Robles

n an average day for Francisca Trujillo she can be practicing her new set of computer skills, doing Zumba and Yoga, sewing, singing and dancing all within about a 5-hour-day.

That’s not bad for the 73-year-old who spends most of her time these days at 3010 R Street, or better known as the Intercultural Senior Center. “I love coming here, it’s a great place where I can learn new things,” Trujillo says.

Francisca is just one of about 70 senior citizens who participate and attend the Intercultural Senior Center on a daily basis. The senior center, which is located at the South YMCA works to serve senior citizens from all walks of life at its current home in South Omaha.

Carolina Padilla, the executive director says, “This place is not just a resource center for our seniors, but it’s also a safe place for them to be comfortable, learn new things and still be active.”

Seven years ago Carolina started and got the organization off the ground with only five senior citizens in a small room, “we have defiantly grown from where we started,” Padilla says.

The senior center started in March of 2009 with a handful of people and operated three days a week. After a few months the organization moved to Our Lady of Guadalupe Hall where they were operating out from for about a year.

The senior center then found a bigger space at the Sokol building on 20th and N Streets. The space had potential to grow but the need to serve more seniors required a new home. After about 3 years the center was relocated to its current

location in the upper floor at the South YMCA building and now operates five days a week.

Padilla says, “In about a year our lease will be up at this location and we are trying to be proactive by finding a permanent home for our center. That has always been one of our main goals, to find a permanent home.”

Celebrating its seventh consecutive year, the center still aims to serve the seniors citizens of the Omaha community at the highest level possible. The center serves a wide variety of senior citizens from all different backgrounds. “We don’t just serve Latinos but we have people from Nepal, refuges from Burma and Sudan, all senior citizens are welcome at the center,” Padilla says.

Social services, ESL/Spanish classes, health and wellness workshops, opportunities for exercise and even citizenship classes are just a few of the activities and services the center provides for its senior citizens. The center even has a mode for transportation, which provides rides to and from the center for seniors and also to social gatherings and fieldtrips.

“We have three vans that transport our seniors to the center and back, but we don’t have enough transportation to bring more seniors from all across Omaha. We are looking to add more in the future,” Padilla says.

The center also provides meals to the seniors through the help of the Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging. Thanks to grants, donations and volunteers the seniors are able to enjoy at least one meal a day at the center.

Partnerships in the community such as with the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Creighton University and other organizations are vital to help sustaining the services for seniors at the center according to Padilla.

“The seniors really enjoy learning from health and wellness based speakers and workshops,” DeAna Lara says, the program coordinator at the senior center. “Many of our seniors benefit from these types of workshops because they do have some health issues when they come to us or are battling depression.”

According to a study taken by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2007 one in three seniors live in isolated households. Many seniors who come to the senior Center are part of that statistic.

“I love coming here,” Gaspar Ibarra says.

Ibarra is just one of the many senior citizens who feels the center provides a sense of community. “I don’t come here just to socialize, I come here because I feel it helps me find solace and purpose,” Ibarra says.

In the coming years the senior center aims to be a one-stop shop for senior citizens of the Omaha community. “Our goal is to have as many services here for our seniors so they don’t need to be running all around Omaha for everyday healthcare or services that they need,” Padilla says. “We hope to provide the opportunity for our seniors to have the wings to fly in the later part of their lives. A senior once told me that after she had come to our center, and as long as we continue to have that effect on the seniors in our community I think we can be here another seven years.”

CON UNA VOZ PRIVILEGIADA, JORGE ROSAS TRIUNFA EN LOBO 97.7 FM

ún no ha cumplido un año en la radio y el mexicano Jorge Rosas, ya está posicionado en el gusto del público de Lobo 97.7 FM. Cuando las personas reconocen su voz varonil en lugares públicos y se acercan para felicitarlo por su estupenda labor, Rosas confiesa que ése detalle le “llena el alma”.

Originario de Puebla, Rosas lleva 15 años viviendo en Omaha, lugar donde aseguró “sentirse bendecido” principalmente desde que en el 2015 se le presentó el reto de estar en el estudio: “La primera vez que me dieron la oportunidad de audicionar para el puesto de locutor y pude escucharme al aire, fue un momento mágico.

Una experiencia que hasta hoy sigo disfrutando”.

Rosas tiene “un trabajo de base” donde se encarga del mantenimiento de un edificio de 97 condominios, pero desde pequeño comenzó a imaginarse el estar frente al micrófono: “Vivía en Tlaxcala pero no siempre nos llegaba la señal de las estaciones de la Ciudad de México porque estábamos rodeados de los volcanes Iztlacihuátl y Popocatépetl. Tendría yo unos 7 años y con una grabadora viejita alcanzaba a sintonizar un programa de 7 a 8 de la noche, donde ponían música en inglés de los ochentas”.

Aunque ahora no recuerda el nombre del titular del programa, sí recuerda que su voz era inconfundible, al igual que la suya que destaca en la radio al igual que su profesionalismo: “La voz afortunadamente se la heredé a mi padre y eso ha sido una herramienta muy importante para mi hoy por hoy. La cuestión de la disciplina y las ganas de salir adelante, se debe a que serví 10 años en el ejército (mexicano) y tuve un entrenamiento bastante rígido”.

Esa formación le permitió unirse de manera estupenda, al equipo ya consolidado de Lobo 97.7 FM: “He aprendido que es bien importante que nosotros como seres humanos debemos estar siempre bien integrados pero sobre todo

apoyarnos mutuamente. No vernos como una piedra en el camino sino al contrario, vernos como un escalón más en el cual podemos tanto impulsarnos como impulsar a los demás”.

Sin embargo, el reto diario de cumplir con el entretenimiento y educación de la audiencia no ha sido sencillo: “Creemos que es fácil estar atrás de un micrófono pero no lo es. Somos seres humanos al final del día, y llevas el riesgo de decir algo que quizás no pensaste pero te salió muy espontáneo, y ya no hay manera de corregirlo porque lo que se va al aire, ¡se va al aire!”.

Para Rosas lo fundamental en esta carrera es el respeto, ya que “cada persona que está detrás del micrófono tiene una responsabilidad muy grande”, así que lo primero que necesita es “saber qué es lo que va a decir al aire”, y después, hacerlo de una manera amena que cautive a quien está del otro lado porque “al final del día, ése es nuestro compromiso, tratar de agradar a la gente para que estemos siempre ahí, en su preferencia”.

Es por ello que la estación está abierta a recibir los comentarios y sugerencias de los radioescuchas, puliendo su propuesta musical: “Las ideas también son bienvenidas porque la radio no es nuestra, la radio es de la gente, nosotros únicamente somos el medio, ‘prestamos la voz’, por decirlo de alguna manera, pero en realidad quien decide es el radioescucha y por eso mis respetos para todos ellos”.

Según Rosas, un ejemplo de esto es que la programación actual se está enfocando en tocar “una música familiar, algo que pueda escuchar cualquier persona de cualquier edad sin que se sienta ofendido”, valorando sus preferencias: “La radio es el instrumento que te conecta directamente con el público, y es interesante la verdad, porque tú puedes interactuar (si hablas y te contesta el locutor por decir, para mandar saludos) con la radio de una manera en la que te

puede hacer sentir bien y tú puedes hacer sentir bien a la persona”.

Y no únicamente a una persona, sino a una comunidad entera ya que es bien conocida la genuina participación de Lobo 97.7 FM en asuntos de vital importancia como la recaudación de fondos para apoyar a los sectores más necesitados como el Radiomaratón de Ayuda con el Children’s Hospital o la campaña para hacer realidad los deseos del público durante la navidad.

Eventos como los anteriores, “te dan la oportunidad de compartir directamente con las personas, de sufrir de alguna manera lo que ellos están pasando y te llena de sensibilidad”.

El popular programa “Conexión con la Comunidad” que conduce el locutor Sergio Robles “El Tapatío” y que funciona como plataforma para que agencias no lucrativas ofrezcan sus servicios a las familias hispanas, es otra clara muestra del compromiso de la estación con su gente, al igual que lo es la creación del buró informativo en español, Omaha Noticias.

Todas éstas acciones a favor de la comunidad, hacen que Rosas se sienta “orgulloso y muy agradecido” de ser miembro del equipo que hace posible tan gran labor.

-¿Y cuál es el secreto para transmitir siempre tan buena vibra a través del micrófono?

-“Soy muy positivo frente a la vida, realmente no necesito de mucho para ser feliz.

Siempre tengo mucha energía, siempre voy con la predisposición de dar lo mejor de mi en mi trabajo”.

Los legisladores de Nebraska avanzaron el proyecto de Ley LB 947 de la primera ronda de debate el miércoles, 24 de marzo. La LB 947 dará licencias profesionales y comerciales de trabajo a jóvenes inmigrantes y que permanezcan en Nebraska los beneficiarios de la Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia o DACA y mejor conocidos como DREAMers, quienes son altamente talentosos, con permiso para trabajar, educados en Nebraska, para que puedan practicar su profesión y contribuyan a la economía del estado.

La propuesta patrocinada por el Senador Estatal de Omaha, Heath Mello, es parecida a la propuesta de ley que aprobaron los senadores estatales el año pasado que permitió que los beneficiarios de DACA pudieran obtener licencias de manejo. Ahora la Ley del Estado previene que algunos profesionales obtengan las licencias necesarias para practicar su profesión, dijo Mello. El Estado requiere este tipo de licencias para mas de 170 profesiones diferentes, como maestros, enfermería, y cosmetología. El proyecto de ley ganó la primera ronda con 27 votos a favor y 7 en contra.

Mello dijo que su propuesta de ley ayudara a la gente que es legal, viviendo temporalmente y trabajando en el Estado, para que se queden aquí mientras ayudan a estimular la economía de Nebraska y paguen impuestos.

El senador Mello agradeció a sus colegas, el senador Matt Hansen por darle prioridad a la LB 947, y por apoyar a la futura fuerza laboral de Nebraska.

También dio un reconocimiento a los estudiantes, al Centro Laboral, a los Jóvenes de Nebraska en Acción, Nebraska Appleseed, Nebraska Cattlemen, Justicia Para Nuestros Vecinos-Nebraska, La Cámara de Comercio de Omaha y La Cámara de Comercio de Nebraska, quienes abogaron por la LB 947.

CONFERENCIA ZERO GRAFFITI INTERNACIONAL La Ciudad de Omaha y la organización no lucrativa Zero Graffiti Internacional están presentando un evento abierto al público que alguna vez haya tenido que lidiar con vandalismo de grafiti o quien quiera saber mas en como disminuir el vandalismo de grafiti el 26 y 27 de mayo, en el Scott Conference Center, 6450 Pine Street, Omaha Nebraska, 68106.

Esta conferencia es un llamado a la acción. Como muchas otras grandes ciudades, Omaha ha sufrido el incremento de vandalismo de grafiti. Desde 2012, Omaha ha reducido el vandalismo de grafiti en un 92 por ciento, y ha reducido el tiempo de remoción de 10 a 14 días y de 24 a 48 horas.

WITH A PRIVILEGED VOICE, JORGE ROSAS TRIUMPHS AT LOBO 97.7 FM POR MARINA ROSADO

H

e’s been on the radio for less than a year, but Mexican Jorge Rojas is already one of the public’s favorite radio announcers at Lobo 97.7 FM. When people recognize his voice out on the street and approach him to congratulate him for a great job, Rosas tells us it “fills his soul.”

Born in Puebla, Mexico, Rosas has been living in Omaha for 15 years now, a city where he’s been “feeling blessed,” especially after when in 2015 he took on the challenge of working in the studio: “The first time I was given a chance to audition for the spot as radio announcer and I could hear myself on the air was a very magical moment. It’s something I still continue to enjoy a lot.”

Rosas has a “main job” where he takes care of the maintenance of a building with 97 condominiums, but ever since he was little he started to imagine himself in front of a microphone: “I was living in Tlaxcala, but we didn’t always receive the radio signals from Mexico City because we were surrounded by the Iztlacihuatl and Popocatepetl volcanoes. I was seven years old and had an old radio that I used to tune into a show that was on from seven to eight every night - they used to play 80s music in English.”

Although he can’t remember the name of the show’s host he definitely remembers his unmistakable voice, a voice as special as his which shines on radio thanks to his professionalism: “My voice is something I luckily got from my father, and it has been a handy tool for me. Being disciplined and always trying to give it my all is something I learned after serving in the (Mexican) army for ten years under a very strict training regime.”

This allowed him to easily join the great team at Lobo 97.7 FM: “I’ve learned that it is important that we as human beings must al-

ways work together and help each other out.

We must not see each other as an obstacle in our path but as a step that can help us aim higher as we do the same for everyone else.”

However, the daily challenge of entertaining and informing the public has not been easy: “We believe that it is easy to sit down with a microphone in front of us, but it isn’t. We are human beings, and we’re always at risk of saying something you didn’t mean to, and you really can’t change that because once you’ve said it, it is out there!”

For Rosas, the most important aspect of this career is respect because “every single person who sits behind a microphone has a very big responsibility.” Before getting started everyone “has to know what they’re going to say when they’re on the air,” and they must do so in a way that entertains those who are listening because “at the end of the day, this is our commitment, to try and entertain the people so that they’re always ready to hear us.”

This is why the station is open to comments and suggestions from its listeners: “Ideas are also welcomed because the radio isn’t ours, it is of the people, and we’re only how they get access to it, we ‘lend our voice,’ so to speak, and, in the end, the one who decides is the radio listener which is why I respect all of them.”

According to Rosas, an example of this is the current programming focused on playing “music for the whole family, something that any person of any age can hear without being offended,” taking into consideration the preferences of their listeners: “Radio is an instrument that directly connects you with the audience, and it is a very interesting tool because you can interact with radio (if you call to send a greeting to someone and your call is answered by the radio host) in a way that can make you feel good and you can, in turn, make someone feel great.”

And this doesn’t just have an influence over a single person but over an entire community who always participates along with Lobo 97.7 FM on important events as is the case of the fundraiser to help those in great need, as is the case of the Radio Marathon with the Children’s Hospital or the campaign to make the audience’s wishes come true during Christmas.

Events such as these “give you an opportunity to directly interact with people, to somehow go through what they’re going through and this humbles you greatly.”

Popular show “Conexión con la Comunidad” (Connecting with the Community) from radio host Sergio Robles “El Tapatio” which acts as a platform for non-profit agencies to offer their services to Latino families is another clear example of the great commitment of the radio station to its people, along with the creation of Omaha Noticias, a news bureau with news in Spanish.

All of these actions that aim to benefit the community make Rosas feel “proud and thankful” for being a member of the team that makes it all possible.

When asked what his secret was for always broadcasting such a good vibe through the microphone, he had this to say: “I have a very positive outlook on life – I really don’t need much to be happy. I always have a lot of energy, and I always make my way to work ready to give it my all and be the best version of me I can be.”

LAWMAKERS ADVANCED BILL TO FAVOR DACA RECIPIENTS The Nebraska legislature advanced LB 947 from the first round of debate on Wednesday, March 24.

LB 947 is about issuing work professional and commercial licenses to young immigrants and allowing Nebraska’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, or DREAMers, that are highly skilled, workauthorized and Nebraska-educated, to practice their profession and contribute to the state’s economy.

The proposal, sponsored by Omaha State Senator Heath Mello, mirrors legislation state senators approved last year that provides driver’s licenses to DACA recipients. State law now prevents some people from gaining the licenses necessary to practice their craft, Mello said. The state requires such licenses for more than 170 different occupations, such as teachers, nurses and cosmetologists. The bill gained firstround approval on a 27-7 vote.

Mello said his bill would help people who are lawful, temporarily living and working in the state to remain here while they boost the state’s economy and pay taxes.

Sen. Heath Mello thanked his colleagues Senator Matt Hansen for prioritizing LB 947 and standing up for Nebraska’s future skilled workforce.

He also recognized the students, Heartland Workers Center, Young Nebraskans in Action, Nebraska Appleseed, Nebraska Cattlemen, Justice for Our Neighbors-Nebraska, The Greater Omaha Chamber, and Nebraska Chambers of Commerce, who are advocating for LB 947.

LATINO FORUM ON HEALTH DISPARITIES The College of Public Health, Department of Health Promotion, Social & Behavioral Health, COPH Latino Public Health Advisory Committee and Metropolitan Community College are sponsoring the “Dialogue on Health Disparities: Issues and challenges in Health Equity in the Latino Community,” on April 6, from 5-7 p.m., at Metropolitan Community College, South Omaha Campus, ITC Room 120, 27th and Babe Gomez Ave., Omaha.

Aida L. Maisonet Giachello, Ph.D. will be the presenter. She is professor of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University and 2014 recipient of the Health Equity Champion Award by the Centers for Disease Controls and Prevention, CDC. The presentation and discussion will focus on the increased interest regarding Hispanic/Latino health and social issues and will stress health disparities and will end by developing an agenda for action to address social and health equity.

ZERO GRAFFITI INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE The City of Omaha and the non-profit organization Zero Graffiti International are hosting an event open to all who deal with graffiti vandalism or would like to learn more about abating graffiti vandalism on May 26 and 27, at the Scott Conference Center, 6450 Pine Street, Omaha.

The event will include guest speakers and programming that will delve into graffiti abatement and prevention strategies, with the goal of developing leadership strategies in the fight against graffiti vandalism. A certificate of participation will be issued to each attendee.

This conference is call to action. Like many big cities, Omaha saw an ever-increasing amount of graffiti vandalism. NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC AMENDMENTS TO THE OMAHA-COUNCIL BLUFFS CONSORTIUM CONSOLIDATED SUBMISSION FOR COMMUNITY PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS/ACTION PLAN: FISCAL YEARS 2011, 2013 AND 2014 The Consolidated Submission for Community Planning and Development Programs (“the Consolidated Plan”) is a planning document prepared by the City of Omaha pursuant to Section 105 of the Cranston-Gonzalez National Affordable Housing Act of 1990.
