“P

or su propio sentido de independencia, por las enseñanzas vitales que se adquieren, por experimentar responsabilidades, por aprender trabajar en equipo, pero sobre todo para entender que pueden llevar las riendas de su vida”.

Estas son algunas razones por las que Anne Levy, del departamento de labor, considera necesario y aconsejable que los adolescentes y jóvenes adultos trabajen durante el verano cuando acaben las clases.

Ella esta convencida que esta es una experiencia formativa, aunado a considerar que hay algunos fundamentos de la vida laboral que deben obtenerse cuanto antes, lo cual estará apoyando a formar gente trabajadora con un verdadero sentido de profesionalismo y responsabilidad.

Su opinión no es única, Susy D. Thomson, de la organización Gallup (agencia de empleos en Omaha), dice que los jóvenes no se hacen un favor cuando optan por actividades educativas o extracurriculares en vez de trabajar en verano. “Todos los estudios muestran que el éxito en una carrera es más rápido cuando se ha trabajado en la adolescencia”.

Dijo también que “el trabajo de verano es parte de la preparación para la Universidad y la vida después de esta”.

Consientes de lo anterior, recientemente fue presentada la edición 2016 del programa Step-Up, un proyecto que conjuntamente lideran la ciudad de Omaha y The Empowerment Network, con la finalidad de proveer

oportunidades a jóvenes y adultos jóvenes para obtener capacitación laboral valiosa y/o experiencia laboral en empresas dispuestas a contratarles durante el verano.

“Esta es una oportunidad para tener éxito”, dijo la alcaldesa Jean Stothert durante la conferencia de prensa realizada en el American National Bank, donde también estuvo presente Willie Barney, presidente del Empowerment Network, aunado a los presidentes de la campaña Step-Up. El proyecto comenzó en el 2012, cuando la ciudad de Omaha, la organización Red de Empoderamiento y diversos socios comunitarios se unieron para apoyar a la juventud en su búsqueda por lograr sus primeras experiencias laborales, de forma profesional, justa, adecuada a su edad y sobre todo bien remunerada.

Así, decidieron lanzar un desafió a los empresarios, filántropos, organizaciones comuni-

tarias e individuos para sumarse al proyecto y juntos lograr poner a trabajar a los jóvenes y los adultos jóvenes.

A partir de ahí, el éxito ha ido en aumento.

Recientemente, según cifras publicadas, en el 2015 fueron seleccionados 420 jóvenes para el programa, colocándoles en 80 sitios de trabajo.

Este año se pretende dar una oportunidad laboral a 600 jóvenes, entre las edades de 14 a 21 años.

Hay que mencionar que la alcaldesa Stothert esta muy comprometida con este proyecto, al grado de haber asignado $500,000 para el presupuesto de este 2016. una cifra récord para su dependencia, la cual se suma a los $200,000 que ya se habían recolectado. De hecho, se espera que el costo del programa de este año sea de $1.2 millones.

De acuerdo con John Kotouc, co-presidente de la campaña, los trabajos que se ofrecen per-

miten que los jóvenes no solo ganen una remuneración económica, sino también confianza y sobre todo una autoestima saludable.

Hay que subrayar que el programa comenzará el 6 de junio y finalizará el 12 de agosto. Los participantes pueden ganar hasta $1.800. Y para para aplicar solo hay que visitar el sitio web www.stepupomaha.com.

Por otro lado, Anne Levy aconsejo a los jóvenes aspirantes “no esperar al último día de clase para empezar a buscar trabajo”.

Dijo que hay una serie de trabajos que no se pueden hacer a ciertas edades. Según la ley de Estándares Laborales Justos (FLSA) los menores de 13 años pueden cuidar niños, repartir periódicos o trabajar como actores o en espectáculos. De 14 a 15 años pueden trabajar en oficinas, tiendas, restaurantes, cines y parques de atracciones y quienes tienen de 16 a 17 años pueden hacer trabajos que no entrañen peligro (trabajar en un grill, conducir, en una procesadora de comida, por ejemplo). A los 18 no hay restricciones.

En relación a los horarios permitidos, dijo que “cuando no hay colegio, se pueden trabajar 40 horas a la semana, 8 horas al día”.

Ademas subrayo que “Se tiene derecho a cuidado médico si tiene un accidente en el trabajo o se enferma por este”.

Así, es bueno saber que hay oportunidades laborales para este verano, y más bueno es saber que hay muchos beneficios para aquellos jóvenes que buscarán un empleo en estas fechas, lo cual irá formando su vida laboral futura. En hora buena.

elders TECHNOLOGY AND THE SENIOR POPULATION There are many seniors that experience isolation due to many reasons.

Technology has made a big change in the way people live their lives. It is difficult for a lot of seniors to keep up with many advances in technology. Seniors many times do not know how to use a computer or a smart cell phone these days and this causes them to be even more isolated from their family, friends, and disconnected from society. At this stage of life, it is not easy to adjust to changes causing seniors frustration, insecurity, isolation as well as other physical and mental health problems among seniors. By seniors becoming isolated, they are more at risk to become victims of some type of crime. Technology is like a race in which a lot of seniors are not at an advantage. At the Intercultural Senior Center, basic computer classes are offered on Wednesdays and Thursdays in the attempt to support seniors to be more connected with society. ecause of their sense of independence, because of the vital things they learn, in order to experience what it’s like to have more responsibilities, to learn about working as a team, but above all to be able to take charge of their life.”

These are some of the reasons why Anne Levy from the Department of Labor considers it is a must that teenagers and young adults are encouraged to work during the summer once classes are over.

She is convinced that this is a learning experience, not to mention that the sooner someone can learn about the work life, the better. This will help to form people with a true sense of professionalism and responsibility.

And she’s not the only one with such an opinion. Susy D. Thomson from Gallup, says that young people aren’t doing themselves any favors when they select educational or extracurricular activities during the summer instead of working: “All studies show that success on a professional level can be achieved faster when someone has worked during their adolescence.”

She also said “working during the summer is part of their preparation for college and for life after that.”

On that note, the 2016 edition of the Step-Up program was recently presented. This is a joint project of the city of Omaha and The Empowerment Network, to empower teenagers and young adults so that they can gain valuable work train-

ing and/or work experience at companies willing to hire them during the summer.

“This is a great opportunity to be successful,” said Mayor Jean Stothert at the press conference held at the American National Bank, where Willie Barney, president of The Empowerment Network, was also present, along with the presidents of the Step-Up campaign.

The project started in 2012 when the city of Omaha, The Empowerment Network and several partners in the community came together to find a way to support teenagers and young adults to achieve their first work experience in a professional and fair environment that is adequate for their age, as well as properly paid.

They decided to encourage entrepreneurs, philanthropists, community organizations and individuals to join the project and help teenagers and young adults to find a job.

The project’s success has only increased ever since. Recently published stats show that in 2015 there were 420 young individuals selected for the program, placing them in 80 workplaces.

This year the aim is to help 600 young individuals between 14 and 21 years of age.

We must mention that Mayor Stothert is very committed with the project, assigning $500,000 in funds for the program’s 2016 budget, a new record, funds that will complement the already collected $200,000. The cost for the program this year is estimated at $1.2 million.

individuals to not only earn good pay, but also to build up their confidence as well as a healthy self-esteem.

Anne Levy advises the young applicants to “not wait until the last day of school to look for a job.”

She says there are many jobs that can’t be performed by individuals of a certain age. According to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), those who are 13 years of age or younger can take care of kids, deliver newspapers or work as actors or in show business. Those who are 14 to 15 years old can work in offices, stores, restaurants, movie theaters and theme parks. If they are 16 to 17 years of age, they can perform jobs where they are not in danger (for example, working a grill, driving, working at a meat packer). Once they’re 18 years of age, there are no restrictions.

As for the allowed work schedules, she said: “When there is no school, they can work 8 hours per day, 40 hours a week. They also have a right to medical coverage if they have an accident at work or if they get sick because of it.”

It is good to know there are many work opportunities for young people during the summer, and even better to learn there are many benefits to them taking on said tasks as they start to shape their professional life.

La tecnología es como una carrera en la que la mayoría de nuestras personas de la tercera edad no tienen ventaja. na típica mañana de sábado para la mayoría de las mujeres usualmente no incluye talleres para mejorar la comunicación, guardería gratuita y discursos por parte de la Alcaldesa de Omaha y la Cónsul de México, pero en la Women’s Conference (Conferencia de las Mujeres), cuyo anfitrión fue el Latino Center of the Midlands, un esfuerzo para empoderar a las mujeres es algo muy importante.

La primer conferencia “Un Día Para Ti… ¡Mujer!” se llevó a cabo el 18 de marzo en el Lake Magnet Center del Sur de Omaha. Veintisiete participantes esperaron con ansias para el evento y fueron recibidas por Jean Stother, Alcaldesa de Omaha, así como por María Guadalupe Sánchez Salazar, del Consulado de México.

Esta conferencia dedicada únicamente al éxito, el liderazgo y el continuo crecimiento de las mujeres comenzó con la participación de la Cónsul. Ella expresó su gratitud hacia el Latino Center of the Midlands por fungir como anfitrión de la conferencia, además de comunicar la necesidad de continuar luchando por los derechos de las mujeres en nuestra sociedad. La Cónsul también se tomó el tiempo para hablar sobre el trabajo que se lleva a cabo para proteger los derechos de los mexicanos que viajan hacia y desde México y Nebraska sin importar su estado migratorio, esto en una colaboración entre su oficina y la oficina del Fiscal de los EE.UU. La Alcaldesa Jean Stothert posteriormente ofreció unas sabias palabras sobre el liderazgo y la importancia de que las mujeres se apoyen las unas a las otras. “Cada una de nosotras tenemos algo que dar: nuestro tiempo, nuestro talento y nuestro tesoro. Cada uno de estos regalos debe enfocarse en las importantes necesidades de Omaha. Es en ello en lo que podemos ser líderes, servir y hacer una diferencia”, dijo la Alcaldesa Stothert.

“Es increíble ver a fuertes mujeres líderes que nos guían a través de este camino”, comentó una participante en la conferencia.

“En verdad son ejemplos de mujeres liderando el camino para el resto de nosotras”.

La conferencia después continuó con talleres sobre comunicación, finanzas y empoderamiento impartidos durante el día. Los testimonios personales por parte de los oradores y de los socios de la comunidad de Veridian Credit Union y Boystown, buscaron conectar con y entender los problemas a los que se enfrentan las mujeres en la comunidad del Sur de Omaha. Algunas mujeres compartieron sus historias personales y realizaron preguntas sobre problemas financieros y domésticos a los que se enfrentaban en su vida cotidiana.

Defensores de las mujeres de Justice for Our Neighbors-Nebraska y del Women’s Center for Advancement estuvieron presentes en la conferencia para brindar consultoría y educación directa sobre violencia doméstica a quienes participaron en la conferencia.

“En verdad queríamos que esta conferencia beneficiare a las mujeres en nuestra comunidad

al enfocarnos en el problema de autodefensa”, comentó Carolina Quezada, directora ejecutiva del Latino Center of the Midlands (LCM). “Muchas veces no apreciamos a esas mamás que están en la familia educando e influenciando a nuestra siguiente generación de latinos. Si en verdad vamos a cambiar el problema de la falta de equidad de género en nuestra cultura, ello necesita comenzar desde el hogar con las familias”.

La idea de la conferencia de las mujeres comenzó después de un taller sobre género del que formó parte la Cónsul hace alrededor de un año.

El LCM participó en dicho taller, mismo en el que se abordaron temas sobre equidad y educación de género entre mujeres. “La Cónsul llevó a personas maravillosas de México que estaban logrando hacer una diferencia en la educación de las mujeres en las comunidades rurales”, nos comentó Quezada. “Fue algo muy inspirador”.

La conversación sobre una necesidad de dialogar sobre las cuestiones sociales con las mujeres surgió en el LCM después del taller de la Cónsul. El LCM sabía sobre la continua necesidad de llevar una mayor educación a las mujeres de la comunidad de Omaha como parte integral de un plan principal para su concepto, siendo así como nace la idea de la conferencia.

Quezada mencionó que alrededor de la mitad de la clientela a la que sirve el LCM son mujeres. “Queríamos llevar a cabo algo tangible que esas mujeres pudieren llevar consigo y usar en su vida diaria en casa y en la comunidad”, expresó Quezada.

A través de su historia de más de 43 años, el LCM ha evolucionado para convertirse en una de las organizaciones latinas más respetadas en el área metropolitana de Omaha. Anteriormente conocido como el Chicano Awareness Center, hoy en día continúa siendo parte clave de la vida de los latinos, grupo que se está convirtiendo en una de las minorías étnicas de más rápido crecimiento en el país.

El LCM cuenta con clases para empleo y educación de adultos, enfocándose en el éxito de los estudiantes latinos mientras brinda servicios culturales y para el bienestar de la familia. Entre el gran número de colaboraciones que conectan al LCM, la Conferencia de las mujeres es solamente otra manera de brindar un servicio a los latinos en la comunidad del sur de Omaha.

“Nos encantaría poder regresar el siguiente año”, nos dijo Quezada. “Estamos pidiendo a las damas que participaron en la conferencia que nos brinden su retroalimentación para poder lograr que la conferencia sea aún mejor.

También deseamos continuar trabajando en conjunto con las importantes organizaciones en nuestra comunidad, así como con líderes como la Cónsul y la Alcaldesa Stothert quienes en verdad creen en el poder de las mujeres”.

No hay duda sobre el poder de las mujeres en la comunidad del Sur de Omaha. El que las mujeres puedan reunirse para aprender y crecer juntas en la primera conferencia de las mujeres del LCM expone los grandes cambios que han llegado para las mujeres de la comunidad.

typical Saturday morning for most women doesn’t usually include communication building workshops, free daycare and speeches by the Mayor of Omaha and La Consul de Mexico, but at the Women’s conference hosted by the Latino Center of the Midlands, an effort to empower women goes a long way.

The first ever Un Dia Para Ti…¡Mujer! Conference was hosted March 18th at Spring Lake Magnet Center in South Omaha. Twenty-seven participants eagerly waited to see what was in store for them and were greeted by Mayor Jean Stothert and Maria Guadalupe Sanchez Salazar, Consulado de México.

A conference solely devoted to the success, leadership and continued growth of women opened with remarks by La Consul. She expressed her gratitude to the Latino Center of the Midlands for hosting the conference and conveyed the need to still push for women’s rights in our society. La Consul also took time to talk about the work that is being done to help protect the rights of Mexicans traveling to and from Mexico and Nebraska regardless of their migratory status, in conjunction with her office and the U.S. attorney’s office.

Mayor Jean Stothert then got up to speak offering some wise words on leadership and the importance of women supporting each other.

“We each have something to give; our time, our talent and our treasure. Each of these gifts helps address important needs in Omaha. This is where we can lead, serve and make a difference,” Mayor Stothert said.

“It’s wonderful to see such strong women leading our community,” A conference participant said. “They are true examples of women leading the way for all of us.”

The conference then continued with communication, financial and empowerment workshops throughout the day. Personal testimonials by speakers and community partners from Veridian Credit Union and Boystown, aimed to connect and understand the issues that are facing women in the South Omaha community. Some women shared their personal stories and asked questions regarding the financial and domestic problems they were facing in their daily lives.

Women advocates from Justice for Our Neighbors-Nebraska and Women’s Center for Advancement were also at the conference to provide direct consul and education on domestic violence to participants at the conference.

“We really wanted this conference to benefit the “grassroots” women in our community by focusing on the issue of self-advocacy,” Carolina Quezada said, the executive director of Latino Center of the Midlands (LCM). “Many times we don’t get those moms who are in the family, who raising and influencing our next generation of Latinos. If we are truly going to change the issue of gender equity in our culture than it needs to start at home with families.”

The idea for the women’s conference started after a gender workshop that La Consul hosted about a year ago. The LCM participated in the workshop, which tackled issues of gender equity and education among women. “La consul brought all these amazing people from Mexico who were making a difference in educating women in rural communities,” Quezada said. “It was very inspiring.”

The conversation for a need to navigate social issues towards women sprung up at the LCM after La Consul’s workshop. The LCM knew the continued need to push for education among

women in the omaha community needed to be an integral part of their main plan for their concept, thus the idea for the conference was born.

Quezada referenced that about half of the clientele that the LCM serves are women. “We wanted something tangible that these women can take away with them from this conference and use in their daily lives at home and in the community,” Quezada said.

Throughout its 43-year history, the LCM evolved to become one of the most respected Hispanic organizations in the Metro of Omaha.

Formerly known as the Chicano Awareness Center, it continues to play a key role in the lives of Latinos who are becoming the country’s largest and fastest-growing ethnic minority.

The LCM has employment and adult education classes, focuses on the success of Latinos students and provides cultural and family well-being services. Among the many community partnerships that connect the LCM, the Women’s conference is just another way of providing a service to the Latinos of the South Omaha community.

“We would love to come back next year,” Quezada said. “We are asking the ladies who participated in the conference to provide feedback for us to the make the conference better. We also want to continue to partner with important organizations in our community, together with leaders like La Consul and Mayor Stothert who really believe in the power of women.”

There is no question about the power of women in the South Omaha community. The fact that women can gather together to learn and grow from each other at the LCM first-ever women’s conference, exposes the growing change that is here for women in the community.

A MÁS DE DOS DÉCADAS, EL STGO. HEATH RECORDÓ CON CARIÑO SUS INICIOS EN OPD SIRVIENDO A LOS HISPANOS Y SU PARTICIPACIÓN EN LA ADMIRABLE UNIDAD CANINA POR MARINA ROSADO

E

l Sargento Brian Heath nació en Rochester, N.Y., y en 1988 ingresó a la Fuerza Área de los Estados Unidos, ocupando el puesto de lingüista en asuntos de inteligencia después de estudiar español en el Defense Language Institute en el Presidio de Monterey, California.

Sus funciones lo trajeron hasta esta ciudad, donde se quedó tras dejar la milicia: “Es cierto que no fue mi primera opción, pero decidí unirme al Departamento de Policía de Omaha (OPD), porque el trabajo de un oficial es en muchos aspectos, similar al de un militar”.

Heath fue contratado por OPD en 1995, “cuando existía la necesidad de contar con policías que hablaran español, porque en ése tiempo solo habían unos 4 ó 5 oficiales bilingües en total”. Así que como la jurisdicción de OPD se divide en cuatro jefaturas, fue asignado a la Jefatura del Sureste (Southeast Precint).

En los primeros años de su carrera, el sargento observó los cambios relacionados con el origen de las familias inmigrantes que se asentaban en el sur, “ya que históricamente ésa era un área donde se veía a la gente de Polonia y Alemania”, y el creciente número de hogares y negocios hispanos comenzaba a notarse.

“Yo tenía mucho trabajo ahí y puedo decir que hasta hoy, el sur de Omaha es mi parte favorita de la ciudad”, explicó Heath agregando que el dominar el lenguaje fue una ventaja que facilitó sus tareas cuando se trataba de hacer cumplir la ley entre la comunidad hispana, “ya que es obvio que a las personas les gusta que un oficial hable español porque se sienten más cómodos”.

En 1997 el Sgto. Heath se cambió a la Jefatura del Noreste y poco después, en 1999, comenzó a ejercer como Detective de Narcóticos hasta el 2003, para laborar en los años subsecuentes como Detective de Homicidios y Detective de Delitos Mayores, antes de enlistarse en el 2005 en la Fuerza Especial para Mantener las Calles Seguras de Pandillas (Safe Streets Gang Task Force).

Fue hasta el 2008 cuando Heath tuvo la fortuna de trabajar en lo que hasta hoy considera su “empleo preferido”, como un oficial de la Unidad Canina (K-9 Unit) al lado de su inseparable compañero, su fiel perro Duke.

OPD tiene varias unidades que investigan delitos y crímenes, controlan el tráfico, vigilan la seguridad durante eventos masivos y demás,

pero según Heath, la Unidad Canina en particular, “involucra mucho el trabajo físico, principalmente de entrenamiento con los perros, para asegurarse que ellos puedan trabajar adecuadamente con el público”.

El sargento señaló que los elementos caninos tienen dos funciones: “La primera es que los perros pueden detectar drogas, específicamente mariguana, metanfetaminas, heroína y cocaína.

Y su otra tarea es la de patrullar, digamos que cuando un sospecho está escondido en una casa o al aire libre como en un bosque o en el campo, los perros pueden encontrarlo”.

En la Unidad Canina, “los perros tienen la responsabilidad de la seguridad de los oficiales y del público, así como de los propios sospechosos”.

Duke “está jubilado” y vive tranquilo como la querida mascota de la Familia Heath, pero el sargento reconoció que durante las investigaciones de las que fue partícipe, el noble animal no sólo era su amigo “sino también un instrumento de trabajo que debía de utilizar cuando había una situación de peligro, ya que al emplearlo no tenía que hacer uso de ningún oficial puesto que los perros van a hacer por nosotros cualquier cosa que necesitemos”.

El programa de la Unidad Canina de OPD se inauguró desde 1960 con 11 perros policía, los cuales siempre son escrupulosamente escogidos para proteger a su comunidad, con una característica en común, su entrega incondicional: “Los perros tienen que demostrar mucha valentía desde el principio porque ellos van a tener que entrar posiblemente a una casa en donde se encuentre un sospechoso escondido al que deben de encontrar y aprehender”.

Para ello, el perro es entrenado rigurosamente de dos a tres meses como mínimo.

Durante la época en la que Heath entrenó a Duke, otro oficial, Mathew McKinney, también hacía lo mismo con su propio compañero, el ejemplar Kobus.

“Matt es un buen amigo y Kobus y Duke pasaron mucho tiempo juntos porque cada año nosotros tenemos que obtener una certificación y ellos siempre fueron certificados el mismo día”, comentó el sargento con un dejo de tristeza al pensar en Kobus, quien falleció el pasado sábado 23 de enero.

Como un íntegro servidor público, Kobus perdió la vida defendiendo a su comunidad al entrar en el domicilio de un hombre at-

rincherado desde el día anterior, quien se negaba a cumplir la orden judicial expedida en su contra para ser ingresado en un hospital de salud mental.

El sujeto estaba armado y aún con la presencia de elementos del Departamento del Alguacil del Condado de Douglas y de la Patrulla del Estado de Nebraska, y a pesar de las diversas maniobras del Escuadrón Antibombas (Bomb Squad) y del Equipo de Ataque de Armas Especiales (SWAT Team), no se rendía.

Uno de los últimos recursos de las autoridades, fue el dar la orden para que Kobus ingresara al lugar donde el noble ejemplar fue acribillado por el sospechoso quien después de otras medidas drásticas, finalmente se entregó.

Kobus era un hermoso can de la raza Belgian Malinois de 9 años y durante 6 demostró constantemente su coraje en la Unidad Canina, donde le faltaban algunos meses para retirarse: “Fue un perro muy fuerte, en buena condición física, y el día que se murió únicamente estaba haciendo su trabajo. Es importante que el público sepa que los perros de la Unidad Canina, quieren ir a trabajar cada día.

Cuando yo salía de mi hogar con mi perro Duke, él se iba conmigo bien contento. Para mí era como tener dos perros diferentes, uno, el que vivía en casa conmigo y otro, el perro que entraba en la camioneta para ir al trabajo como un oficial más”.

El temple de Kubos fue honrado en una emotiva ceremonia que congregó a diversos sectores de la sociedad en la Iglesia de la Comunidad de Cristo el 28 de enero: “Fue muy triste, pero como dije, es necesario comprender que él estaba haciendo su trabajo”.

Un trabajo que el mismo Heath está orgulloso de ejercer y aunque sus obligaciones son mayores desde que fue promovido a sargento en el 2014, y actualmente labora en la Jefatura del Noreste, espera algún día regresar a servir a las familias del sur de Omaha: “En la Policía de Omaha hay un lugar para los jóvenes de la comunidad latina que quieran ser oficiales. LA FUNDACIÓN FAMILIA WEITZ APOYA NUEVA ASOCIACIÓN LEGAL

Justicia Para Nuestros Vecinos de Nebraska ha recibido una subvención por tres años de la Fundación Familia Weitz para la Asociación Legal de Trabajadores Inmigrantes. El nuevo programa es en colaboración con el Centro Laboral, o Heartland Workers Center.

Los trabajadores inmigrantes con bajos recursos podrán tener acceso gratuito a un abogado de JFON-NE de tiempo completo con la especialización en leyes de inmigración combinado con leyes laborales y de empleo.

El abogado ayudará a los trabajadores inmigrantes a entender sus derechos laborales y con soluciones a sus problemas laborales o violaciones a sus derechos. Las consultas legales serán a bajo costo.

Además de trabajar en los casos de trabajadores, el abogado proveerá de educación a la comunidad sobre leyes de inmigración y empleo para fomentar el conocimiento a los posibles remedios disponibles para los trabajadores inmigrantes documentados e indocumentados. Los servicios iniciarán próximamente en este año.

Ricketts en Contra del Proyecto de Ley de Licencias Profesionales El gobernador Pete Ricketts está haciendo saber su oposición al proyecto de ley que otorgará licencias profesionales a los jóvenes beneficiarios de Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia, DACA, para que puedan trabajar en profesiones en Nebraska donde se requiere de licencia para poder ejercer.

La propuesta presentada por el senador Heath Mello de Omaha, subió al primer piso con un conteo de 27-7 la semana antepasada, y podría necesitar mas de 30 votos para vencer el veto del gobernador.

MORE THAN TWO DECADES LATER, SERGEANT HEATH REMEMBERED HIS EARLY DAYS AT THE OPS, SERVING LATINOS AND WORKING IN THE K-9 UNIT

ergeant Brian Heath was born in Rochester, N.Y., and in 1988 he became part of the United States Air Force, working as a linguist with intelligence affairs after studying Spanish at the Defense Language Institute at the Presidio in Monterey, Cal..

His work took him to this city, and he ended up staying after his work with the armed forces: “It is true that it wasn’t my first choice, but I decided to join the Omaha Police Department (OPD), because in many ways working as a police officer is very similar to being part of the military.”

Heath was hired by the OPD in 1995, “when there was a need for police officers who spoke Spanish because back then there were only 4 or 5 bilingual police officers.” Since the OPD’s jurisdiction is split into four precincts, Heath was assigned to the Southeast precinct.

During his early years, the Sergeant witnessed the changes related to the origin of the immigrant families that settled in the south part of city, “because, historically, that is where you used to see a lot of people from Poland and Germany,” and the growing presence of Latino homes and businesses was starting to become a reality. “I had a lot of work over there, and I can say that, to this day, South Omaha is my favorite part of the city,” said Heath, adding that learning the Spanish language was a big advantage for him since it made it easier to do his job in the Latino community, “because, obviously, people feel more comfortable when a police officer talks to them in Spanish.”

In 1997, Sergeant Heath moved to the northeast precinct, and then in 1999 be started to work as a detective at the narcotics unit up until 2003. He later enrolled into the Safe Streets Gang Task Force in 2005.

It wasn’t until 2008 when Heath was lucky enough to work on what be today considers to be his “favorite job” at the K-9 Unit, working alongside Duke, his loyal dog and partner.

OPD has several units that investigate crimes, control traffic and that take care of the public’s security during massive events but, according to Heath, the K-9 unit in particular

“requires a lot of physical work, mainly during the training of the dogs to make sure they can be used to work in public.”

The sergeant pointed out that dogs have two tasks: “The dogs can find drugs, specifically marijuana, methamphetamines, heroin, and cocaine. Their other task is to patrol locations.

If a suspect is hiding inside a house or out in the open in the woods or a field, the dogs can find him/her.”

At the K-9 unit, “dogs are responsible for the safety of police officers and the public, and even of the suspects.”

Duke “is retired” and has a nice life as the pet of the Heath family, but the Sergeant acknowledges that during the cases on which he worked, the noble animal was not only his noble friend, “but also a work tool I had to use when in a dangerous situation, because by using him I didn’t need the help of another police officer because dogs can do anything we need them to do.”

The OPD’s K-9 unit was created during the ‘60s with 11 police dogs carefully selected to protect the community, always fully committed to their role: “Dogs must show they’re courageous right from the start because they’ll probably have to enter a house where a suspect is hidden, and they’ll need to find said suspect so that he/she can be arrested.”

For this, the dogs go through a rigorous training regime that lasts a minimum of two to three months. Back when Duke was trained by Heath, Mathew McKinney, another police officer, was doing the same with the extraordinary Kobus.

“Matt is a good friend and Kobus and Duke got to spend a lot of time together because every year we have to get them certified, and they were always certified on the same day,” said the Sargent with a bit of sadness in his eyes while thinking of Kobus who passed away on January 23.

As a public servant, Kobus lost his life defending the community after entering the home of a man entrenched since the previous day that refused to comply with

a court order for him to be admitted to a mental health hospital.

The subject was armed and even with the presence of members of the sheriff ’s department for Douglas County and from the Nebraska State Patrol, as well as of the work of the Bomb Squad and the SWAT Team, the guy would not surrender.

One of the last options for the authorities was to order Kobus to enter the location where the noble animal was gunned down by the suspect who, after more drastic measures were employed, finally surrendered.

Kobus was a nine-year-old Belgian Malinois, who for six years constantly showed his courage as a member of the K-9 unit where he was a few months away from retirement: “He was a very strong dog in great shape, and on the day he died he was only doing his job.

It is important that the public knows that the dogs in the K-9 unit want to go to work every day. When I used to bring Duke, he would gladly join me. For me, it was like having two very different dogs – the one who lived at home with me, and the other one who would enter my vehicle every day to go to work as another member of the team.”

Kubos’ mettle was honored in an emotional ceremony that brought together many sectors of society at Christ’s Community Church on January 28: “It was a very sad moment, but like I said, people have to understand that he was doing his job.”

A job that Heath is proud to do every day, and even though his obligations have grown ever since he was promoted to sergeant back in 2014, currently working at the northeast precinct, he hopes to one day be able to once again serve the families of South Omaha: “At the Omaha Police Department there’s always a place for young members of the Latino community who want to become officers. WEITZ FAMILY FOUNDATION FUNDS NEW EMPLOYMENT LAW PARTNERSHIP JFON-NE has received a significant three-year grant from the Weitz Family Foundation for the Immigrant Workers Legal Partnership. The new program is in collaboration with Heartland Workers Center.

Immigrant workers with low incomes will have free access to a full-time JFON-NE staff attorney with specialization in the intersection of immigration law and labor/ employment law.

The attorney will help immigrant workers understand their legal rights and remedies for labor and employment law violations. Consultations and legal counseling will be provided at no cost.

In addition to casework, the new attorney will provide education to the community on immigration law and employment law in an effort to raise awareness of potential remedies available to undocumented and documented immigrant workers. Services will begin later this year.

RICKETTS TARGETING PROFESSIONAL LICENSES BILL Gov. Pete Ricketts is mounting strong opposition to a bill that would allow young undocumented immigrants who have been granted lawful presence in the United States to acquire professional and occupational licenses to work in Nebraska.

The governor’s disapproval, which is being conveyed directly to state senators and expressed to other Nebraskans through a gubernatorial column last week, signals the certainty of a Ricketts veto if the bill LB947 ultimately clears the Legislature.

The proposal, introduced by Sen. Heath Mello of Omaha, jumped its first floor hurdle on a 27-7 count last week. It would need 30 votes to overcome a gubernatorial veto.
