Opciones de colegios y universidades para los estudiantes de Nebraska:

C

uando les preguntamos a los estudiantes que describan a Concordia, frecuentemente dicen que es su ‘casa’ y su ‘familia’,” dice Seth Meranda, Director de Marketing y Comunicación en la Universidad de Concordia, una institución que se encuentra en Seward, Nebraska. Meranda añade “con las organizaciones estudiantiles y clubes, estudios bíblicos, grupos de música, equipos de intramuros, mesas de ping pong y canchas de voleibol de arena, grupos de misión y de servicio, exposiciones de arte y actividades en las residencias, siempre hay algo que ver más allá de los estudios académicos.”

Segun Meranda esta institución ofrece mucha ayuda para los estudiantes que están considerando esta escuela. “Para los estudiantes que van asistir por primera vez, cuatro becas académicas exclusivas están disponibles, becas de $8.000 a $18,000 al año: beca de logros, la beca de decano, la beca de regente, y la beca presidencial,” dice Meranda, añadiendo “todas ellas se basan en rendimiento académico combinado con un GPA de la escuela secundaria y las calificaciones de ACT / SAT.” Otras becas populares incluyen el Premio a la Herencia Luterana y Beca Garantizada de Trabajo de Iglesia.

Además de las becas académicas disponibles para los estudiantes, Meranda señala que Concordia ofrece becas de talento para la participación en el atletismo, el debate, el arte, la música y el teatro. “A cada estudiante se le asigna un consejero de la facultad para apoyarlos a través de su experiencia en la universidad,” dice Meranda.

Añade que los asesores realmente llegan a conocer a los estudiantes a un nivel personal y ayudan a los estudiantes a explorar sus intereses y sus puntos fuertes para ayudarles a encontrar las clases y las posibles oportunidades de carreras. “La oficina de servicios profesion-

La Universidad Concordia está clasificada en el nivel superior en el Reporte de de las Mejores Instituciones del Medio Oeste de Noticias EE.UU y Informe Mundial de acuerdo con Meranda. Los programas más populares en esta institución incluyen la educación, incluyendo el Diploma de Maestro Luterano y título de Maestro Cristiano, los negocios, la psicología, la biología, teología y estudios religiosos, entre otros programas.

Meranda dice que los profesores animan a los estudiantes a seguir un programa en el cual tienen confianza y también uno por el cual tengan pasion. “98 por ciento de los recién graduados están en la escuela posgrado o son empleados dentro de seis meses de su graduación,” añade Meranda.

Concordia ofrece la ayuda de un asesor de carrera de tiempo completo que conecta a los estudiantes con recursos y estrategias que les ayudarán a alcanzar la satisfacción de carrera,” dice Meranda.

Meranda señala que varias cosas establecen la Universidad de Concordia, aparte de otras instituciones educativas en Nebraska. “En este caso, la base de nuestra Universidad Luterana centrada en Cristo, es evidente. Los profesores se preocupan no sólo por el éxito de los estudiantes en el aula, sino también en la vida,” dice Meranda, quien añade “servir a los demás no es sólo un reclamo para sentirse bien en Concordia-es una forma de vida. El que nuestros estudiantes están en su núcleo, cualesquiera que sean sus pasiones, pueden encontrar una manera de ponerla en práctica en Concordia.”

W

hen we ask students to describe Concordia, they most often say ‘home’ and ‘family,” says Seth Meranda, Director of Marketing and Communication at Concordia University located in Seward, Nebraska.

Meranda adds “with student organizations and clubs, Bible studies, music ensembles, intramural teams, ping pong tables and sand volleyball courts, mission and service groups, art exhibits and residence hall activities, there’s always something to do beyond academic studies.”

According to Meranda this institution offers a lot of help for students considering this school. “For students who are first-time attendees, four exclusive academic scholarships are available, ranging from $8,000 annually to $18,000 annually: the achievement award, dean’s scholarship, regent’s scholarship and presidential scholarship,” says Meranda, adding “these are all based on academic performance combined with high school GPA and ACT/SAT scores.” Other popular scholarships include the Lutheran Heritage Award and the Church Work Award Guarantee.

In addition to the academic scholarships available to students, Meranda points out that Concordia offers talent scholarships for things such as participation in athletics, speech and debate, art, music, and theatre.

Performance scholarships are awarded to students through a department chair rec-

ommendation and according to Meranda that scholarship amounts vary.

“Various other scholarships from community and church organizations are accepted, and institutional, federal and state need-based grants are available to all incoming students based on demonstrated financial need. These vary in amount,” says Miranda.

Some students struggling to find a college to attend may also be struggling with selecting a major or field of study. Concordia helps these students in several ways. “Each student is assigned a faculty advisor to support them through their college experience,” says Meranda. He adds that advisors really get to know students on a personal level and help students explore their interests and their strengths to help them find classes and possible career opportunities. “The Career Services office is also available to help students evaluate the best paths they could take and have one-onone discussions as they are considering their options,” says Meranda.

Concordia University is ranked in the top tier of U.S News and World Report’s Best Midwest Regional Universities according to Meranda. Popular programs at this institution include education, including the Lutheran Teacher Diploma and Christian Teacher Diploma, business, psychology, biology, theology and religious studies among other programs.

Meranda says that professors encourage students to pursue a program that are con-

fident about and also passionate about. “98 percent of recent graduates are in graduate school or employed within six months of graduation,” adds Meranda.

Concordia University does not just mentor incoming students, in fact, they take pride in helping seniors preparing to enter the work force. Concordia connects students to JobZone, a service that allows them to view information about companies conducting interviews for open positions, it allows them to submit their resumes to companies and also sign up for interviews on campus with visiting companies. “Career Services also offers assistance in writing a resume and cover letter, as well as job interview preparation.

Concordia provides the assistance of a full-time career counselor who connects students with resources and strategies that will help them achieve career satisfaction,” says Meranda.

Meranda points out that several things set Concordia University apart from other educational institutions in Nebraska. “Here, the foundation of our Lutheran, Christ-centered University is evident. UNA TEMA QUE EXPONE DISCRIMINACIÓN, VIOLENCIA Y LUCHA POR LA IGUALDAD.

ás de la mitad de jóvenes transgénero habrá atravesado por al menos un intento de suicidio al cumplir 20 años, según datos nacionales recopilados por Youth Suicide Prevention Program, y 8 de cada 10 adultos de la comunidad ‘trans’ reportan haber sido víctimas de “bullying” en la escuela.

El término transgénero define a aquellas personas que no se sienten cómodas con la identidad de género que tienen por nacimiento, según la Asociación Americana de Psicología. Uno de los signos más comunes de que una persona es transgénero es cuando un niño asegura que es niña, o viceversa.

Recientemente, en el Sur de Omaha se llevo a cabo una conferencia para hablar sobre este tema. Fue Metropolitan Community College quien tomo la iniciativa de abrir su puertas al dialogo, celebrando su décimo evento anual enfocado a presentar una serie de lecturas sobre diversidad.

“Las personas transgénero desean y merecen el mismo nivel de respeto que cualquier otra persona”, difundido la misma universidad en su invitación, teniendo como conferencista a Rebecca Kling, artísta transgénero y educadora en el tema, quien visitaba por primera vez la ciudad de Omaha.

Entre anécdotas e historias personales, Rebecca habló sobre la forma de integrar a los miembros transgénero en una comunidad más amplia, incluyendo el lenguaje apropiado, la forma de interactuar con respeto, he incluso la creación de sistemas de apoyo a este sector.

El tema es paradójicamente simple y complicado. Rebecca puso como ejemplo el hecho de poder decidir cual baño debe utilizar una persona transgénero.

Entre los invitados a la conferencia estaba Isrrael Treviño, figura pública reconocido por haber ganado recientemente el título de Miss Gay South Omaha. El comentó: “Como persona gay que da shows o que luego se viste de mujer, tengo el dilema de cual baño es mejor utilizar. Si entro al de hombres me dicen que me equivoque y lo mismo pasa con el de las mujeres…”

Este es sólo uno de los muchos tipos de discriminación que experimentan los aproximadamente 700.000 estadounidenses que se identifican como transgénero. El año pasado, fueron asesinados un número récord de personas trans. Se reporta al menos 23 en los Estados Unidos y al menos 81 en todo el mundo. El total más alto de la historia, de acuerdo con The Human Rights Campaign (La Campaña por los Derechos Humanos).

En el presente año, Mónica Loera, una mujer trans latina de 43 años de edad, se convirtió en la primera persona transgénero asesinada a tiros afuera de su casa en Texas, a finales de enero. Un mes más tarde llegó el asesinato de dos mujeres trans de color, Verónica Cano Bancos en San Antonio y Maya (apellido no difundido) en

Filadelfia. A menos de tres meses de este 2016, el año es ya un comienzo sombrío para los transexuales en Estados Unidos.

Las investigaciones sobre la violencia y la discriminación contra las personas trans proporciona evidencia de que estas historias no son incidentes aislados.

De acuerdo con la socióloga Lisa R. Miller, “en un foro público sobre sociología en el país, se hablo de las experiencias transexuales y transfóbicas de discriminación. Ahí, presentamos un análisis, el primero en su tipo, sobre una encuesta nacional de Discriminación Transgénero, la cual incluyó datos de más de 6.400 encuestados trans. Los resultados ofrecen un panorama sombrío sobre la manera en la que son tratadas las personas trans en los Estados Unidos.

Cabe mencionar que Miller ha enfocado gran parte de su trabajo de investigación a examinar la naturaleza y las consecuencias de los prejuicios y la discriminación contra las personas LGBT (lesbianas, gays, bixesuales y transexuales).

De hecho, desde la década de 1960, las personas trans han estado luchando junto a lesbianas, gays y bisexuales en la búsqueda de la misma promesa de igualdad.

“Aun que no es fácil trabajar unidos”, dijo Isrrael, agregando: “En nuestra comunidad muchas veces se critica lo que es diferente.

Una persona gay critica a un transexual, un transexual critica a un transvesti, un transvesti critica a los que no se ven o maquillan como ellos… Afortunadamente hay personas como Rebecca Kling que buscan ayudarnos a entender como ser mejores aliados entre nosotros mismos y en la comunidad en general”.

Isrrael dijo también que el no siente tanta discriminación en su alrededor, “la gente donde vivo me conoce bien y conoce a mi familia. Aun que tengo que reconocer que hay hombres que se sienten incomodos con mi presencia. Por ejemplo al ir a una tienda se me quedan mirando y no es algo que me incomode. Claro que al sentir que es mucha la insistencia de estarme observando, yo tranquilamente les sonrío e incluso les pregunto si les puedo ayudar en algo…”

Dijo que la sociedad ha ido avanzando en la aceptación de la comunidad LGBT, “pero aun no estamos en la misma igualdad. Si la gente ve que una persona gay es varonil lo aceptan con más facilidad, pero si ven a un gay afeminado, transvesti, transgénero o fisicamente feo entonces se cierran más a poder aceptarlo sin saber que quizá esa persona tiene grandes capacidades o talentos”.

Gratamente hay una transformación sociocultural que paulatinamente ha tenido la sociedad estadounidense. Basta con mencionar que el propio presidente Barack Obama se a pronunciado en favor del respeto a los derechos de la comunidad LGBT. American Civil Liberties Union publica que hay 11 estados en el país en los que claramente esta prohibida la discriminación contra las personas trans. Nebraska y Iowa no están en la lista.

Sin embargo, en Iowa se están dando avances. De acuerdo a un proyecto de ley aprobado recientemente en el Senado controlado por los demócratas, sería un crimen de odio discriminar a una persona debido a su identidad o expresión de género. Aun que no está claro si la legislación avanzará este asunto.

Lo que si es seguro es que al menos 200 ciudades y condados han prohibido la discriminación por identidad de género.

En Omaha, Ofelia Robles, Especialista en Prevención del Crimen para el Recinto Sureste del Departamento de Policia dijo: “ Aquí es un Crimen de Odio cuando una persona enfoca sus ataques o acosos a cierto grupo de individuos, basado en su preferencia sexual, religiosa o raza. Los oficiales lo saben y castigan este delito”.

Por otro lado, a nivel estatal, hace apenas unos meses la junta de directores de la Asociación de Actividades para las Escuelas de Nebraska aprobó una política transgénero, por lo cual, las escuelas miembros a este organismo pronto tendrán su propia asamblea general para debatir sobre el tema.

En dicho debate, el centro de atención será el permitir a los atletas transexuales poder competir en la cancha. La Asamblea General podría adoptar la política y decidir sobre la elegibilidad de género. Aun que la presión por eliminarla es fuerte por parte de los miembros de la escuela religiosos, quienes buscan que solo se asuma el genero de una estudiante en base al sexo que indique el certificado de nacimiento.

Un asunto de igualdad que en última instancia los tribunales pueden decidir.

Pero siempre esta la contra parte, quienes indican que pueden presentar una demanda dependiendo de lo que suceda sobre este asunto en Nebraska.

En resumen, el temor social y la intolerancia hacia la comunidad transgénero limitan enormemente a muchas de ellas para que tengan una vida sana. Algunas ciudades y estados han decretado leyes contra la discriminación de personas transgénero para la vivienda y el empleo.

Las entidades sin dichas legislaciones deben de considerar tenerlas.

“Yo considero que cada persona debe buscar su propia identidad y hacer lo que le haga feliz. lo importante es verse a uno mismo y saber que valemos. El rechazo no puede hacer que nos deprimamos o que incluso pensemos en el suicidio como una respuesta, por que eso seria darles la razón a los que piensan que no valemos nada”, concluyó Isrrael.

En definitivamente, hay una necesidad enorme de adiestramientos sobre comunidad transgénero que sensibilicen a todos.

Los cambios que se han producido ha sido gracias al activismo y la intervención de personas como Rebecca Kling o Isrrael Treviño, quienes han encontrado lugares como Metropolitan Community College, cuya directiva sigue demostrando un verdadero liderazgo y compromiso con la igualdad.

La ciudad de Omaha invita a que cualquier persona, sociedad, corporación con fines de lucro u organización sin fines de lucro presente propuestas para recibir ayuda financiera bajo el Programa de Desarrollo de Vivienda y Desarrollo Comunitario para el Año Fiscal 2017 de la ciudad. El Programa de Desarrollo de Vivienda y Desarrollo Comunitario de la ciudad promueve y apoya proyectos para el desarrollo de los vecindarios, proyectos para vivienda asequible, transicional, para personas de la tercera edad y para vivienda asistida, proyectos de quienes buscan comprar un hogar, proyectos para desarrollo económico y proyectos para servicios e instalaciones públicas. Las fuentes de fondos federales de las cuales se financiarán las propuestas incluyen el Community Development Block Grant y programas de Inversión con Socios HOME. Los proyectos que utilicen fondos del Programa de Vivienda Asequible de Nebraska también serán considerados.

The City of Omaha invites proposals from any person, partnership, for-profit corporation or non-profit corporation for funding assistance under the City’s Fiscal-Year 2017 Housing and Community Development Program. The City’s Housing and Community Development Program promotes and supports neighborhood development projects, affordable housing projects, transitional, elderly and assisted living projects, homebuyer projects, economic development projects and public services and facilities projects. Federal sources of funding from which proposals will be funded include the Community Development Block Grant and HOME Investment Partnerships programs. Funding for projects using Nebraska Affordable Housing Program will also be considered.

A TOPIC THAT EXPOSES A COMMUNITY’S DISCRIMINATION, VIOLENCE AND FIGHT FOR EQUALITY _______________________________________________________

A

ccording to data from the Youth Suicide Prevention Program, over half of all young transgender individuals have gone through at least one attempted suicide by the time they turn 20 years old. On top of that, 8 out of every 10 adults in the transgender community report they were bullied in school.

As stated by the American Psychology Association, The term transgender defines those who don’t feel comfortable with the gender identity they were born into. One of the most common signs that a person is transgender is when a boy affirms he’s a girl or vice versa.

A conference recently took place in South Omaha to talk about this topic. The Metropolitan Community College took the initiative to open its doors to dialogue as it celebrated its tenth annual event focused on presenting a series of lectures on diversity.

“Transgender people wish to receive and deserve the same level of respect as any other individual,” said the university in its invitation. Rebecca Kling, a transgender artist and educator on the topic, was the speaker for the event on what was her first trip to Omaha.

Among the many anecdotes and personal stories she shared, Rebecca talked about how to integrate transgender members into the community, including using the proper language and interacting with respect - support systems were even created for said group.

This issue is paradoxically simple yet complicated. Rebecca mentioned, for example, being able to decide which restroom should be used by a transgender person.

Isrrael Trevino was one of the guests of the conference - a public figure who recently won the title of Miss Gay South Omaha. “As a gay person who performs or who dresses as a woman, I have a dilemma for which restroom I should use. If I go to the one for men I’m told I’m wrong, and the same happens if I go into one for women”.

This is only one of the many types of discrimination faced by the approximately 700,000 people in the United States who identify as transgender. Last year there was a spike in the number of transgender people murdered in the United States with at least 23 reported cases - worldwide the number is if 81 reported cases. According to The Human Rights Campaign, this is the highest total ever.

In the current year, Monica Loera, a 43-year-old transgender Latina, became the first transgender person murdered outside of her house in Texas at the end of January. A month later another pair of transgender women of color were murdered - Veronica Cano Bancos in San Antonio and Maya (last name unknown) in Philadelphia. Less than three months into the year, it’s a gloomy start for transgender individuals in the United States.

Research on the violence and discrimination against transgender people shows that these stories are not isolated incidents.

According to psychologist Lisa R. Miller, “in a public forum on psychology, there was a lot of talk about the experience of transsexuals and the discriminatory transphobic moments they suffered, though – this included data from over 6,400 polled transgender individuals. The results paint a bleak picture of how transgender people are treated in the United States.”

We must mention that Miller has focused a large part of her research work on examining the nature and consequences of prejudice and discrimination against LGBT (lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals).

In fact, since 1960 transgender, people have been fighting alongside lesbians, gays and bisexuals in their search of sopromised equality.

“Even though working together is not easy,” said Isrrael, adding: “Many times in our community anything that is different is harshly criticized. A gay person criticizes a transsexual; a transsexual criticizes a transvestite; a transvestite criticizes those who don’t like they do or who don’t wear their makeup like they do… Luckily there are people like Rebecca Kling, who are trying to help us understand how to become better allies to ourselves and to the community in general.”

Isrrael also said that he doesn’t feel as discriminated because “the people from where I live know me well and they also know my family. Even though I do have to mention that there are men who feel uncomfortable around me. For example, when I go to the store they stare at me, but that doesn’t make me feel uncomfortable. When I feel that they’re staring for a bit too long, I peacefully smile back at them and even ask if there’s anything I can help them with.”

He said that society has continued to move towards accepting the LGBT community, “but we’re still not seen as equals. If people see that a gay person is manly they can easily accept him, but if they see he’s very feminine, a transvestite, transgender or even physically ugly, then they have a harder time accepting said person without ever knowing that he/she might be a person with great skills or talents.”

It is good to see that there’s a sociocultural transformation slowly taking place in our society. We need only mention how even President Barack Obama has stated his support for the LGBT community.

American Civil Liberties Union has said that there are 11 States in the country where it is forbidden to discriminate transgender people. Nebraska and Iowa are not on that list.

However, things are happening at Iowa. According to a recent bill proposal

in the Democrat-controlled Senate, discriminating someone because of their identity or their expressed gender would be considered a hate crime. However, it is not clear if this proposed bill will be considered by the legislation.

What is certain is that at least 200 cities and counties have prohibited discriminating people based on gender.

In Omaha, Ofelia Robles, Crime Prevention Specialist for the Southeast Precinct of the Police Department had this to say: “It is considered a hate crime when a person focuses his/her attacks or harassment on a specific group of individuals, based on their sexual preference, religion or race. Officers know this and punish said felony.”

At a State level, only a few months ago the Board of Directors of the Activities Association for Schools in Nebraska approved a transgender policy, and schools that are members of this organization will soon have their own general assembly to discuss this topic.

On said debate, the center of attention will be on allowing transsexual athletes to compete on the field. The General Assembly could adopt the policy and decide on gender eligibility. But right now the pressure for eliminating it is stronger from members of religious schools who only want the gender of a student to be based on whatever is stated on his/her birth certificate.

This is a matter of equality that, in the end, might be up to the courts to decide on.

But there’s always a push from those who say they might file a suit depending on what happens in Nebraska regarding this issue.

The social fear and bigotry against the transgender community greatly limits many of its members and keeps them from having a healthy life. Some cities and States have established laws against discriminating on housing and jobs for transgender individuals. The entities without similar laws must consider making a change.

“I consider that every person must look for their own identity and do what makes them happy. The important thing is that we see ourselves and know that we’re human.

Rejection can’t make us be depressed or think of suicide as the answer, because then we’d be proving that people who think we’re not to be considered as human beings are right,” concluded Isrrael.

There is a great need for educating others about the transgender community to sensitize people on the issues said group has to endure. Changes so far have been achieved thanks to the activism and work of people like Rebecca Kling or Isrrael Treviño, who have found places such as the Metropolitan Community College where its board continues to show true leadership and commitment towards equality.

“CUANDO LE OFRECES UNA BUENA EDUCACIÓN A UN NIÑO, NO SÓLO MEJORAS SU CONDICIÓN, SINO LA DE TODA SU FAMILIA”: ARELLANES

SEMANA DE EDUCACIÓN FINANCIERA EN EL CONSULADO DE MÉXICO

oé era un niño retraído en su salón de clases, quien pese a su corta edad mostraba síntomas de estrés como la falta de sueño. Sus padres preocupados le pidieron ayuda a Beatriz Arellanes quien les sugirió cambiarlo a la Escuela Católica de San Gerardo, “donde el pequeño se sintió valorado y comenzó a florecer”, sobresaliendo en asignaturas como matemáticas.

Fue entonces que Arellanes se sintió orgullosa de tener un empleo mediante el cual podía mejorar la vida de muchos niños latinos de Nebraska.

Arellanes nació en Parral, Chihuahua, y llegó a Omaha hace 6 años, con su esposo David y sus hijos Dafnis e Irving. Ella estudió Ingeniería Bioquímica con Especialidad en Tecnología de Alimentos en una de las universidades más prestigiadas de México, el Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM).

Sus padres fueron maestros y directores a nivel secundaria, así que desde pequeña, Arellanes conoció el papel de la educación en el desarrollo de cualquier comunidad: “Cuando le ofreces una buena educación a un niño, no sólo mejoras su condición, sino la de toda su familia”.

En enero del 2015, la Arquidiócesis de Omaha la nombró Coordinadora de Inscripción Escolar para Estudiantes Latinos en Escuelas Católicas, una posición que antes no existía: “Me siento muy agradecida porque desde el primer contacto que tuve con la comunidad, la respuesta de la gente fue muy buena. La conexión que hay entre la educación católica y nuestras familias latinas se da fácil y rápidamente porque los valores que como comunidad latina tenemos, que son precisamente lo que nos enseñan en nuestra casa, tales como la fe, el respeto, la educación y la disciplina, se viven de igual manera en el salón de clases”.

La Arquidiócesis de Omaha tiene 70 escuelas católicas que ofrecen educación de calidad desde preescolar hasta el grado 12. Pero pese a que muchos padres latinos desean que sus hijos asistan a uno de éstos planteles, generalmente desconocen cosas importantes como la ubicación de los mismos en su vecindario y la existencia de becas escolares otorgadas por organizaciones como Children’s Scholarship Fund: “Por la experiencia que traemos desde nuestros países de origen, sabemos que la educación católica puede ser cara. Pero lo que sucede es que en la mayoría de países como México, las escuelas católicas están fundadas por órdenes religiosas lo que hace que los estudios se encarezcan. Pero en USA se les conoce como escuelas parroquiales, precisamente porque son las parroquias y sus parroquianos quienes las construyen en medio de sus comunidades”.

Al respecto Arellanes ha comprobado que: “Los padres de familia latinos de nuestra comunidad, son gente muy generosa y sin su apoyo no sería posible solventar los costos de una escuela. Por eso los veo con mucho respeto porque están haciendo grandes sacrificios por sus hijos”.

Muchos de los esfuerzos que los padres latinos realizan implican el darse el tiempo suficiente para participar en el desarrollo académico de sus hijos: “El rol de los papás es un elemento indispensable porque la educación consiste en un trabajo conjunto, de ahí que para nosotros sea necesario por ejemplo, que durante las conferencias de padres e hijos en las escuelas contemos con intérpretes como los estudiantes de la Universidad de Creighton que nos apoyan como voluntarios”.

El trabajo de equipo que realiza Arellanes en la Arquidiócesis Católica de Omaha con las familias latinas respondiendo a un llamado directo del Arzobispo George Lucas, está generando excelentes resultados ya que el ciclo escolar 2015-2016 inició con más de 260 nuevos estu-

diantes latinos matriculados tanto en Omaha como las áreas conurbanas y rurales del estado.

Recientemente en una visita y presentación especial del Padre Joe Corpora de la Iglesia de la Santa Cruz de la Universidad de Notre Dame, el superintendente de las escuelas católicas de la Arquidiócesis de Omaha, Patrick Slattery, enfatizó que de 1,107 estudiantes latinos inscritos en el periodo 2014-2015, se aumentó 1,375 en el actual. Destacando la Escuela de los Santos Pedro y Pablo con 199 nuevos estudiantes latinos.

“Los alumnos latinos en escuelas católicas pasaron de ser un 5% a un 7.5%”, recalcó Arellanes, por lo que la atención especial que la Arquidiócesis Católica de Omaha está mostrando hacia las necesidades particulares de dichos estudiantes y de sus familias, ha llevado a maestras como Mary Ann Tietjen de la Escuela María Nuestra Reina a dictar cursos de español básico a sus colegas educadores y administradores, a iniciativa de la institución religiosa.

“Los latinos estamos creciendo y para el 2020 vamos a ser el 20% de la población - comentó Arellanes -, así que necesitamos formar estudiantes que reflejen un buen nivel de liderazgo y que participen en las decisiones de éste país”.

“La educación es parte del ministerio de la iglesia católica, es la forma en la que se evangeliza y es la manera en la que se provee de mejores herramientas a los inmigrantes para que sean parte integral de la comunidad, se puedan desarrollar y aporten todo lo bueno que poseen a nuestra sociedad”, concluyó Arellanes.

La Representación Consular llevó a cabo diversas actividades en el marco de la Semana de Educación Financiera 2016, bajo el lema “Planea, Ahorra, Invierte y Emprende”, del 4 al 8 de abril.

Durante la inauguración de la cuarta edición de la SEF, la Cónsul Guadalupe Sánchez, enfatizó que el esfuerzo del Gobierno de México por celebrar cada año esta actividad responde a la relevancia que se concede a la promoción de la educación e inclusión financiera de los inmigrantes mexicanos en los Estados Unidos y Canadá, al proporcionar información sobre las instituciones bancarias y financieras.

El Consulado propició la firma con dos entidades financieras, Wells Fargo de Omaha, NE y Community 1st Credit Union de Ottumwa, IA, de sendos Memoranda de Entendimiento en materia de Educación financiera, como instrumentos que permitirán a las instituciones colaborar más activamente en la planeación y promoción de diversos foros y talleres.

Asimismo, durante toda la semana la Representación Consular contó con representantes de Catholic Charities, Liberty Tax, Midlands Latino Community Development Corporation, Coopera Consulting, Grameen America y Metropolitan Community College, quienes abordaron diversos temas como: el proceso para iniciar el establecimiento de micro-negocios.

La participación en esta cuarta edición de la SEF, del Director de Distrito de Small Business Administration, Leon Milobar, transmitió al público presente las condiciones necesarias para la apertura de micro-negocios y las oportunidades en apoyo técnico y financiero que ofrece esta entidad gubernamental a la comunidad para la creación e impulso de microempresas.

¡VAMOS A EJERCER EL VOTO! Durante tres semanas, el personal del Centro Laboral o Heartland Workers Center, y voluntarios visitarán a los electores en el Sur de Omaha. Su objetivo es visitar 3,600 electores. Los miércoles de 6 p.m. a 7:30 p.m., miembros de la comunidad y voluntarios participarán en entrenamientos en como ir de puerta en puerta y platicar con los electores, e informar a los miembros de la comunidad sobre la importancia de ejercer el voto en las próximas elecciones primarias en el 10 de mayo.

Los días para salir y tocar puertas son los sábados, 16, 23 y 30 de abril. El Centro Laboral, voluntarios y líderes de la comunidad del Sur de Omaha, saldrán de 10 a.m. a 4 p.m., con almuerzo incluido, y platicarán con diversas familias de toda la comunidad sobre la importancia de ejercer el derecho del voto.

Por parte del Consulado de México, resulta grato informar que en el marco del Programa de Promoción Cultural 2016 de esta Representación Consular, el pasado viernes 15 de abril, se inauguró en la Galería del Consulado, la Exposición de pintura “Los Mayas y sus Raíces de Agua”, de Boris Viskin.

En el marco de la inauguración, la Cónsul Guadalupe Sánchez Salazar transmitió a la audiencia los elementos fuente de inspiración para el artista Viskin en la creación de la obra, en específico, los cuentos de tres de los más destacados escritores de origen maya; Andrés Tec Chi, con el Vuelo de la Serpiente; Maria Luisa Góngora Pacheco, con La Soga de Sangre; y Jorge Echeverría Lope, con la Vieja Huella de Soga, tex-

tos que describen de manera poética la forma en la que la cultura maya dimensionó e imbuyó a los cenotes –dzono’ot- como órdenes prodigiosos con motivos mágicos, míticos y espirituales, asociados a una particular versión de una deidad compleja clásica, la Serpiente Emplumada o Kukulcán, y a la memoria de los pueblos entrelazada con una soga que sangra con la historia, conceptos todos ellos reflejados en las pinturas de Viskin.

Durante la ceremonia de inauguración, Álvaro Domínguez y Montserrat Acacio dieron sentida lectura a los cuentos de los autores mayas citados, y se compartió con los invitados el contenido de la carta del artista especialmente enviada para ser leída durante la inauguración, en donde Virskin reconoce al gran poeta mexicano Carlos

CLAVE 402 sigues trabajando fuertemente en todo el estado de Nebraska y su periferia. Luego de su gira por medios americanos como UNIVISION, regresaron con nuevos proyectos a la ciudad de Omaha, dando a conocer a sus nuevos integrantes, quienes refuerzan el talento y potencial del grupo, para deleite de sus seguidores. Montemayor y la extraordinaria recopilación realizada de los cuentos que posteriormente el artista tradujo en ilustraciones, con miras a la elaboración del libro “Los Mayas y sus Raíces del Agua” -texto aún por publicarse-.

Viskin manifiesta que durante sus conversaciones con Montemayor y en el recorrido literario de las historias mayas, paulatinamente fue convenciéndose que la mejor técnica para ilustrar los textos tan cargados de magia pero que brotan de elementos reales, simples y tangibles, como la soga, el agua y el cenote, era el uso de papel amate, la encáustica, el copal, la cera, el agua y la goma damar, para reproducir “un mundo visual cargado de espíritu y magia”.

Por este medio se hace extensa la felicitación a la Dra. SANDRA RODRIGUEZ ARROYO, de OLLAS, por haber obtenido el premio al miembro más sobresaliente en servicio y aprendizaje en la facultad de UNO.

A la inauguración asistió una nutrida concurrencia de más de 100 personas, entre ellas, la Fiscal para el Estado de Nebraska, Deborah Gilg, quien acompañó a la Cónsul Sánchez Salazar al corte del listón, así como otros representantes de gobierno, de las artes y cultura, del ámbito académico, empresarial, líderes comunitarios y miembros de la sociedad civil.

Después del recorrido por la galería para admirar la Exhibición, se ofreció a los invitados una recepción, en la que se ofreció comida mexicana, acompañada de tradicionales margaritas y aguas frescas mexicanas.

Cabe señalar que la Exhibición permanecerá abierta al público hasta el 27 de mayo.

‘WHEN YOU OFFER A KID A GOOD EDUCATION, YOU DON’T ONLY IMPROVE HIS/HER SITUATION, BUT ALSO THAT OF THE ENTIRE FAMILY’

oe was a withdrawn kid in the classroom who, despite his young age, showed signs of stress, such as a lack of sleep.

His parents were concerned, so they asked Beatriz Arellanes for her help, and she suggested switching him to San Gerardo Catholic School, “where the boy felt appreciated and started to bloom,” becoming an outstanding student in math.

It was then that Arellanes felt proud about having a job where she can help many of the Latino kids in Nebraska.

Arellanes was born in Parral, Chihuahua, and she came to Omaha around six years ago with her husband, David, and her children Dafnis and Irving. She has a Bachelor’s in Biochemical Engineering with a Specialty in Food Technology from the Tecnologico de Monterrey (ITESM), one of the most prestigious colleges in Mexico.

Her parents were teachers and principals at a secondary school level, so ever since she was little Arellanes was able to learn about the role that education plays in the development of any community: “When you offer a kid a good education, you don’t only improve his/her situation, but also that of the entire family.”

On January 2015, the Archdiocese of Omaha named her School Enrollment Coordinator for Latino Students at Catholic Schools, a position that didn’t exist before: “I’m very thankful because since the first moment I started to interact with the community, I had a great response. The connection between Catholic education and our Latino families takes place in a fast and easy manner because of the values we have as a Latino community. Said values are the ones taught to us at home, such as fate, respect, being polite and disciplined, are also present in the classroom.”

Even though most Latino parents want their kids to go to one of these schools, they usually don’t have the information they need for this, such as where each one is located in their neighborhood or the fact that there are scholarships available from independent organizations such as the Children’s Scholarship Fund: “Because of the experience we have from out countries of origin, we know that Catholic education can be very expensive. But what happens is that in most of the countries, as is the case if Mexico, Catholic schools are founded by religious orders and that makes the studies more expensive. But in the United States, they are known as parochial schools because it is the parish and its parishioners who build them in their communities.”

On that note, Arellanes says: “Parents in Latino families in our community are very generous people and without their support it wouldn’t be possible to cover the costs of a school. I have a lot of respect for them because they are making some great sacrifices for their children.”

Many of the efforts of Latino parents include finding the time to participate in the academic development of their children: “The role of parents is very important because education is a joint effort, which is why it’s important for us that for example, during parent and children conferences at school we have interpreters such as the ones from Creighton University who help us as volunteers.”

The work of Arellanes with Latino families at the Catholic Archdiocese of Omaha in response to a direct appeal of Archbishop George Lucas - is generating great results. The 2015-2016 school year started with over 260 new enrolled Latino students from the urban areas surrounding Omaha as well as from the rural areas of Nebraska.

Recently during a visit from Father Joe Corpora from the Holy Cross Church of Notre Dame University, Patrick Slattery, superintendent for Catholic churches of the Omaha Archdiocese, emphasized that this year there have been 1,375 enrolled students which is an increase over the 1,107 Latino students enrolled during the 2014-2015 school year, highlighting that Saints Peter and Paul School had 199 new Latino students.

“Latino students at Catholic schools increased from 5% to 7.5%,” said Arellanes, which is why the special attention from the Omaha Catholic Archdiocese to the particular needs of said students and their families has made it possible for teachers such as Mary Ann Tietjen at Mary Our Queen School to impart Basic Spanish classes to her fellow colleagues as well as to administrators, all thanks to an initiative implemented by the religious institution.

“The Latino community continues to grow and by 2020 we will account for 20% of the entire population,” said Arellanes, “so we need to form students that present a good level of leadership so that they can participate in the decision-making of this country.”

“Education is part of the ministry of the Catholic church, and it is the way the Church evangelizes and provides tools for immigrants to become an integral part of the community so that they can develop their skills and provide all the good in them to our society,” concluded Arellanes.

FINANCIAL EDUCATION WEEK AT MEXICAN CONSULATE Consular Representation held various activities in the framework of the 2016 Financial Education Week (SEF) under the topic: “Plan, Save, and Invest,” from April 4-8.

During the opening of the fourth edition of the SEF, Consul Guadalupe Sanchez emphasized that efforts of the government of Mexico to celebrate this activity every year, reflecting the importance of the promotion of education and financial inclusion for Mexican immigrants in the United States and Canada, providing information on banking and financial institutions that offer the best options for their citizens.

The Consulate signed with two banks, Wells Fargo in Omaha, Neb. and Community 1st Credit Union in Ottumwa, Iowa, a Memoranda of Understanding on Financial Education, as instruments that will enable these institutions to work more actively in planning and promoting workshops, and to redouble efforts to continue increasing and improving the flow of information to the Mexican community.

Also, throughout the week the Consular Representation invited representatives of Catholic Charities, Liberty Tax, Midlands Latino Community Development Corporation, Coopera Consulting, Grameen America and Metropolitan Community College, to discuss various topics such as the advantages offered by banking institutions in Iowa and Nebraska, the different types of credit, how to efficiently manage savings and credit cards, the process to initiate the establishment of micro-businesses, tax payments and the use of remittances for the benefit of the community of origin, through programs such as “3x1 Program.”

During the fourth edition of the SEF, the District Director of Small Business Administration, Leon Milobar, transmitted to the audience the necessary conditions for the opening of micro-businesses and opportunities in technical and financial support, including what this governmental entity provides to the community for the creation and promotion of microenterprises.

LET’S GET OUT THE VOTE! For three weeks, the Heartland Workers Center’s staff, leaders and volunteers will visit Latino voters in South Omaha. Their goal is to visit 3,600 voters. Wednesdays, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., community members and volunteers will participate in training on how to canvass -- or go door-to-door -- to talk with voters, and informing the South Omaha community on the importance of voting for the upcoming Primary Elections on May 10.

The canvassing days are Saturdays, April 16, 23, and 30. The Heartland Workers Center and South Omaha community leaders and volunteers will go door to door from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., lunch provided, and meet with different families around the community on Getting Out the Vote!
