Es segura el agua potable que MUD distribuye en Omaha?

M

e da miedo tomar agua de la llave o que mis hijos chiquitos la tomen así directamente.

Yo prefiero el agua de garrafón y cuando no tengo entonces la hiervo bien para que enfermarnos”, dijo Marisol Ramos, madre de familia en Omaha.

“A mi me dijeron que incluso tiene plomo y eso es muy peligroso. Por eso yo también trato de que mi familia no tome agua directa de la llave”, expreso por su parte la señora Ernestina Lucas Rivas, residente también de Omaha.

“Yo siento que incluso tiene un sabor extraño aunque le ponga el filtro en la casa. Por eso le digo a mi esposa que siempre tenga agua de garrafón”, declaró Martín Chávez, propietario de un negocio local en la ciudad.

“Mi mamá me dice que no la tome así directo y que mejor agarre una botella, por que si no me va ha doler la paso o me van a salir gusanos en la panza”, comentó Ramiro Jacinto Herrera, estudiante de cuarto grado en Omaha.

Con este panorama, podía albergarse la idea de que el agua potable que M.U.D. esta distribuyendo en la ciudad no es muy segura.

Sin embargo, para verificar esta idea, analizamos el Reporte Anual de Confianza del Consumidor, catalogado como la fuente de información más precisa sobre la calidad del agua.

Dicho reporte, es revisado por el por el Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos de Nebraska (DHHS) y busca cumplir las normas establecidas por la Agencia de Protección al Medioambiente de Estados Unidos (EPA) para Agua Potable Segura.

Hay que mencionar que el agua provista para los habitantes de Omaha, M.U.D. la obtiene de los ríos Missouri y Platte, al igual que de el sistema acuífero de Dakota. Este líquido es bombeado desde entradas o posos mantenidos por el Distrito.

En el proceso, M.U.D. tiene la tarea de suavizar, clarificar y desinfectar el agua para que cumpla con las normas de Agua Potable Segura.

De ahí que este obligados a presentar un reporte que muestre los resultados de diversas pruebas de

seguridad, tanto al agua “final” como el agua que es tratada en sus plantas y distribuida hasta los grifos/ llaves de los consumidores.

Felizmente, el agua de M.U.D. cumple con todas las normas federales y estatales para un Agua Potable Segura, e incluso excede todas las normas establecidas por la EPA. Este informe es público y todas aquellas personas que desean un copia pueden llamar al departamento de Servicio al Cliente (402.554.6666).

Es falso que haya plomo en el agua potable de la ciudad de Omaha.

En este sentido hay que señalar que M.U.D. realiza exámenes de plomo mensualmente y éste no se ha detectado en la fuente de agua “cruda”, en el agua “final” que sale de sus plantas de tratamiento de agua o en el sistema de distribución (tuberías principales de agua).

Lo que significa que M.U.D. produce agua estable y no corrosiva en la ciudad . De hecho, el agua que los consumidores reciben es tratada para que no sea corrosiva a la plomería.

Ahora bien, hay que subrayar que el plomo es generalmente un problema local; lo que significa que algunos consumidores pudieran tener tuberías de plomo en sus casas o tuberías que fueron soldadas con plomo. De ahí que se pueden encontrar tuberías de plomo en algunas casas de Omaha y otras comunidades que fueron construidas antes de1950.

Sobre este asunto hay que saber que la tubería/cañería de servicio, es la línea que conecta la plomería de su vivienda con la cañería principal que se encuentra usualmente debajo de la calle. Usted es el dueño de la tubería de servicio. Pero, si usted desea saber la información que M.U.D. tiene sobre el material del que están hechas sus tuberías de servicio, solo tiene que llamarles al 402.554.6666. Puede también contratar a un plomero para que este inspeccione sus líneas de servicio.

Parte de la creencia popular es que un filtro de agua garantiza la seguridad al momento de consumir el preciado liquido.

Sin embargo, expertos indican que una de las peores cosas que puede hacer es tener agua filtrada y no cambia el filtro.

De hecho, una vez que el filtro está lleno de productos químicos y el agua pasa a través de él, lo que ocurrirá es que esos productos químicos van a regresarse al agua.

Por ello, el uso de un filtro es una preferencia personal; sin embargo, este pudiera ser dañino si no es mantenido apropiadamente.

Así, queda la tranquilidad de que abrir la llave y beber agua directamente es completamente seguro para las familias de Omaha.

Por si fuera poco, M.U.D. tiene un acuerdo con Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance (OHKA) de examinar el agua potable en los hogares que pudieran tener plomo. Periódicamente emiten comunicados públicos de sus estándares de calidad y en su búsqueda por llegar a toda la población a la que sirven, realizan también reportes bilingües.

Sin embargo, es necesario que los consumidores sepan que ellos mismos pueden contribuir de manera importante a que este nivel de calidad siga imperando en la ciudad.

’m afraid to drink the tap water or that my kids drink directly from it.

I prefer drinking from a water jug and when we don’t have that I’d rather boil some water so that we don’t get sick,” said Marisol Ramos, a housewife from Omaha.

“I was told it had lead in it, and that is very dangerous. Because of that I also try to keep my family from drinking directly from the faucet,” said Ernestina Lucas Rivas, another resident in Omaha.

“I feel that it has a weird taste even after I put a filter on it at home. It is why I tell my wife we should always have water jugs at home,” said Martin Chavez, owner of a local business.

“My mom says I shouldn’t drink directly from it and that I should drink bottled water, or else my tummy will hurt, or I’ll get worms in my belly,” said Ramiro Jacinto Herrera, a 4thgrade student in Omaha.

With this overview, one could think that the water supplied by M.U.D. for the city isn’t safe.

However, to verify this idea, we analyzed the Annual Consumer Trust Report, a report catalogued as the most precise source of information regarding water quality.

Said report is reviewed by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) as it aims to comply with the norms established by the United States Environment Protection Agency (EPA) regarding safe drinking water.

We must mention that the water provided

by M.U.D. to the population of Omaha is obtained from the Missouri and Platte rivers, as well as from the Dakota aquifer system. This liquid is pumped from locations or wells maintained by the district.

In this process, M.U.D. works on softening, clarifying and disinfecting the water so that it can comply with the safe drinking water rules.

This is why it is obligated to present a report that shows the results of a wide range of safety tests, both for the “final” water as well as for the water that is treated at its plants and distributed to consumers’ taps and faucets.

We are happy to report that M.U.D. complies with all safe drinking water federal and state laws, and it even exceeds the norms established by the EPA. This report is public, and those who wish to request a copy can do so by calling the department’s Customer Service line (402.554.6666).

It is false that there is lead in Omaha’s drinking water.

We must point out that M.U.D. tests for lead every month, and said element has not been detected in the “raw” water source, in the “final” water that exists its treatment plants or in the distribution system (the main water piping).

This means M.U.D. produces stable and non-corrosive water. In fact, the water that

consumers receive is treated so that it does not corrode pipes.

We must also highlight that lead is generally a local issue. This means that some consumers might have lead piping in their houses or pipes that were welded with lead.

This is why some houses in Omaha or other communities might have lead piping if their homes were built before 1950.

On that note, we want to inform you that the service piping is the line that connects a house’s pipes to the main piping that is usually located under the street. You are the owner of the service piping. But, if you wish to learn about the information that M.U.D. has about the material from which your service piping is made of, you can call them at 402.554.6666. You can also hire a plumber to inspect your service piping.

Many people believe that a water filter guarantees that this precious liquid can be drunk safely. However, experts state that one of the worst things people can do is have filtered water and not change the filter. In fact, once the filter is full of chemicals and the water goes through it, what will happen is that said chemical products will end up in the water.

A filter is a personal preference, but it could end up doing more harm than good if it’s not properly serviced.

You can rest assured knowing that opening a faucet and drinking directly from it is completely safe for the families of Omaha.

On top of that, M.U.D. has an agreement with Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance (OHKA) to examine the drinking water of homes that could contain lead. It periodically issues public statements regarding its quality standards as it aims to reach the entire population they serve, and they also issue bilingual reports.

However, consumers must know that they can greatly contribute towards making sure the water’s quality continues to be the same in the city.

To help, you must know that it is forbidden that you dispose of any medication by throwing it into the toilet. You also shouldn’t pour residue into the sewers. On top of that, the use of fertilizers, pesticides and toxic cleaning products must be reduced.

ntre el miedo y la confusión que envuelve la supresión electoral, los defensores de los derechos electorales hacen sonar un mensaje de esperanza y determinación.

Estas son las primeras elecciones presidenciales en las que nuevas restricciones electorales estarán vigentes en 15 estados. Las restricciones han sido más fáciles de aprobar - y más difíciles de seguir - como resultado de un fallo de la Corte Suprema de los EUA de 2013 que limitó partes del Acto de Derechos Electorales de 1965.

A pesar de esto, los defensores de los derechos electorales dicen que se está trabajando en estados de todo el país para asegurar que los votantes elegibles puedan inscribirse y votar.

En Florida, “cambios masivos en los lugares de distritos electorales” dejaron a muchos votantes poco seguros de dónde ir a votar.

En el Condado Macon-Bibb, los oficiales eligieron ubicar un local de votación en la oficina del sheriff, lo cual, dijo Dianis, fue un “factor intimidatorio” para evitar que votara el electorado predominantemente afro-americano.

COMMUNITIES PUSH BACK AGAINST VOTER RESTRICTIONS

mid the fear and confusion around voter suppression, voting rights advocates are sounding a message of hope and determination.

This is the first presidential election in which new voting restrictions will be in effect in 15 states. The restrictions have been easier to pass – and harder to track – as a result of a 2013 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that limited portions of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Despite this, voting rights advocates say work is happening in states across the country to ensure eligible voters can register and cast their ballot.

“People who are qualified citizens [who] should be allowed to vote are being denied the ability to vote and their votes are not being counted,” explained Anita Earls, executive director of the Southern Coalition for Social Justice, a North Carolina-based non-profit.

“But if voters do have issues, there are advocates ready to try and help them vote, even on Election Day,” Earls said Thursday on a national telebriefing hosted by New America Media.

Earls pointed to a national hotline where “there is a network of volunteer attorneys throughout the country” available to help people who have been turned away from polling stations or are confused about new voting regulations. The hotline is available in English and Spanish.

She also noted that every state has online resources available detailing voter requirements. For example, the website nonprofitvote.org, provides state-specific and nonpartisan voter information.

In areas where there is a significant population of non-English speaking residents, federal law requires states to provide language appropriate translations, Earls said.

There are currently 22 states that have some form of voter restriction in place, whether it be requiring photo IDs, cutting

back on early voting or registration restrictions. Although it is difficult to measure their impact on overall turnout, these restrictions have had a pronounced impact on young, first-time and minority voters, as well as low-income voters and the elderly.

In 15 of these states, this year’s presidential election will be the first where such laws go into effect. People of color comprise 31 percent of the 2016 electorate, meaning these laws could have a significant impact on election results.

In 2013, the Supreme Court ruling abolished Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, which required that states with a history of racial discrimination toward minority voters gain approval from the federal government prior to enacting changes to local election laws.

“It is very difficult work,” to track changes to local election laws, said Judith Browne Dianis, co-director of the national civil rights organization Advancement Project. She explained that while there were fewer pieces of restrictive legislation passed the previous year, local moves by election administrations continue to create barriers for would-be voters.

“Section 5 … was our check on things.

Now we don’t have a check. We have to go out and find out on our own, and unfortunately you may not find out until Election Day.” But a look at the way these laws have played out in primary elections across the country provides an important indicator of what’s to come in November.

In Maricopa County, Arizona, residents waited in lines of up to five hours after election officials reduced polling places by 70 percent.

In Florida, “massive changes in precinct locations” left many voters unsure of where to cast their ballots.

In Macon-Bibb County, Georgia, officials opted to locate a polling station at the sheriff ’s office, which Dianis said was an “intim-

idating factor” in keeping the predominantly African-American electorate from voting.

But Dianis stressed that in each of these areas, groups are working to either counter such changes or blunt their impact.

In Arizona, for example, local advocacy groups including Promise Arizona and One Arizona are banding together to create checks on election administration decisions.

In Macon-Bibb, residents joined with the NAACP and New Georgia Project to press the county to relocate the polling station.

Meanwhile, in some states, organizing efforts have been successful at expanding voting rights.

For example, in Virginia, voting rights efforts helped push that state to restore voting rights to those with felony convictions on their record.

Dianis called the move a “huge victory,” affecting over 200,000 people in the state, many of them African American. “This didn’t happen on its own,” she said. “Communities of color got together to push for this.”

The task now in Virginia, she said, is to ensure that those who were formerly incarcerated and are newly eligible to vote actually know they are eligible and that they get register to vote.

Nationwide, there are “5.8 million people disenfranchised because of criminal convictions,” according to Dale Ho, director of the Voting Rights Project with the American Civil Liberties Union. In terms of population, he said, they would “be the 20th largest state in the country … with 10 votes in the electoral college.”

Ho also noted the “tremendous racial disparities” within this population, saying one in 13 voting-age African-American men is not eligible to vote because of a criminal conviction.

There are currently three states that have permanently disenfranchised people with felony convictions – Kentucky, Florida and Iowa. Two states – Maine and Vermont – allow people to vote even while incarcerated.

“All other states fall somewhere in between,” said Ho, who said that the “restoration of voting rights is critical to the reintegration” into society of the formerly incarcerated.

Ho called the loss of Section 5 a “tremendous blow” and said it came just as voter participation and engagement among people of color was “surging.”

But there is also “a lot of good news” when it comes to voting rights, he said.

He pointed to efforts now underway in Congress to revitalize the Voting Rights Act, and said that in several states, including California, laws have been passed to automatically register voters. “The onus to register should be on the state, not on the citizen,” he said.

Meanwhile, the rhetoric now heard on the campaign trail suggests a continued push to disenfranchise voters, said Dianis.

“We’re seeing some wins, but we should look over the next few months,” she said. “We will find a fight around the right to vote.”

This telebriefing is part of a multi-state reporting fellowship for ethnic media aimed at informing communities about new and existing voter restriction laws. The project is supported by a grant from The Neo Fund.

INTELIGENCIA EMOCIONAL

lejandro Hernández (*) concluyó el segundo año de preparatoria. Durante su paso por las escuelas públicas ha sobresalido por sus excelentes calificaciones, manteniendo el primer lugar en la clase de matemáticas.

Ahora que inician las vacaciones, sus maestros lo invitaron a unirse como voluntario en diferentes organizaciones no lucrativas, pero el adolescente se siente incapaz de poder relacionarse y aunque desea colaborar, el salir de su habitación y presentarse ante personas desconocidas, le provoca ansiedad.

Sus padres no se explican el por qué un alumno como él, destacado en materias de ciencias, tiene problemas cuando se trata de vincularse con otros jóvenes, quienes se adaptan fácilmente a las nuevas tareas comunitarias, aunque sus calificaciones no sean tan buenas. “¿Es que mi hijo en realidad no es tan inteligente como pensábamos?”, se pregunta consternada la madre de Miguel.

Pero... ¿qué es la inteligencia?

“Haciendo historia, la psicología desde hace muchos años ha buscado la evaluación de la gente, la evaluación de las habilidades como un punto específico muy importante dentro de su materia de estudio. Bajo este sentido se han hecho evaluaciones de muchos tipos y uno de los factores que más han sido evaluados ha sido la inteligencia. Según algunos autores, la inteligencia es definida como la manera en la que una persona (y la efectividad con la que lo hace), se adapta a su entorno”, señaló el Maestro en Psicología, Daniel Gutiérrez Larotta, añadiendo que esto significa simplemente que “una persona es más inteligente si se adapta a los cambios que haya en el contexto”.

Durante su más reciente visita a la ciudad de Omaha, Gutiérrez explicó que años atrás, la evaluación de la inteligencia únicamente se enfocaba en la llamada inteligencia cognitiva.

Cabe recordar por ejemplo, las pruebas por las que muchos han pasado, mismas que miden el coeficiente intelectual, conocido como IQ “y

que sirve para clasificar a personas que tienen más habilidades de cierto tipo que otras”.

Sin embargo, Gutiérrez comentó que “en algún momento de la historia se descubrió que no necesariamente la gente que obtenía puntuaciones más altas en la inteligencia cognitiva era a la que le iba mejor en la vida”, concluyendo que “habían otras habilidades que también eran importantes”. Fue así que la psicología llegó al concepto de inteligencias múltiples.

Dicho concepto se refiere a que “no solamente la inteligencia es cognitiva sino que también puede ser inteligencia musical, o auditiva, o visual o inteligencia que tenga que ver con el manejo del color e incluso con actividades físicas”, como sería en el caso específico de un atleta de alto rendimiento.

Con el estudio de las inteligencias múltiples se descubrió que hay específicamente dos habilidades que resultan importantísimas y que como dijo Gutiérrez, “sí nos pueden predecir el éxito académico y el éxito laboral”, y que son las habilidades interpersonales y las habilidades intrapersonales.

Esto es, “la capacidad de manejarme emocionalmente yo (interpersonal), y la manera de establecer vínculos con un segundo o una tercera persona (intrapersonal)”. La evolución de ambos términos nos dirige a lo que actualmente se conoce como inteligencia emocional.

“La inteligencia emocional es simplemente decir ‘ya ocurrió este hecho y borrón y cuenta nueva’, a lo que sigue - enfatizó Gutiérrez -, y tiene que ver con el manejo productivo de las emociones”.

Por citar un ejemplo compartido por la propia madre de Alejandro, durante un viaje a México, el muchacho tenía programada una visita al museo de ciencia y tecnología de la ciudad de Xalapa, en Veracruz, donde viven sus abuelos. Pero por cuestiones de tiempo, fue imposible que la familia visitara el lugar y el chico se enojó con sus padres, y se mantuvo irritable la mayor parte del tiempo durante todo el paseo.

Aquí es cuando vale la pena hablar del auto conocimiento: “Uno de los conceptos básicos de lo que es la inteligencia emocional tiene que ver con el hecho de que una persona se conozca a sí misma y sepa qué habilidades fuertes tiene y que áreas débiles tiene”.

Gutiérrez aclaró que el auto conocimiento está relacionado con aspectos del ser humano como la empatía y el autocontrol, lo que se traduce en una expresión productiva de nuestras emociones: “Si yo me puedo dar cuenta de que me estoy enojando, me es más fácil controlar esa emoción”.

El primer paso del auto conocimiento implica la aceptación de que somos personas con aciertos y errores, y que de igual manera, los demás también lo son. Para Alejandro fue imperdonable que sus padres no tomaran en cuenta la cuestión de las distancias y el tráfico de las grandes ciudades, pero si se hubiera puesto en los zapatos de ellos, corriendo de un lado a otro para poder convivir con todos sus parientes, habría disfrutado más de la compañía de sus primos que lo llenaron de obsequios y halagos, tratando de conocer más de su vida en los Estados Unidos.

Entonces, cognitívamente hablando, Alejandro es inteligente, ¿pero puede desarrollar su inteligencia emocional para poder finalmente relacionarse mejor con su entorno?: “A diferencia de otro tipo de habilidades que son muy difíciles de desarrollar, el concepto de inteligencia emocional se aterriza mucho en conductas que luego entonces pueden ser aprendidas y pueden ser desarrolladas”.

Así que la respuesta es, ¡sí!.

Arte de Caballos en Honor a Oficiales de Omaha El 20 de mayo, marcó el primer aniversario de la muerte de la Oficial Kerrie Orozco quien murió en la línea del deber cuando ella y otro oficial trataban de arrestar a un fugitivo, y este pasado viernes se inauguró “Los Caballos de Honor”, con una ceremonia en el Turner Park, donde se develaron ocho caballos pintados en honor de los oficiales que han muerto o han sufrido lesiones catastróficas en la línea del deber.

Los Caballos de Honor es una campaña de arte público que comenzó en Chicago en 2014 y por primera ve llega a Omaha.

Los ocho caballos dan tributo a los oficiales policiacos de Omaha y diferentes artistas de Omaha diseñaron cada estatua. Los caballos estarán en el Turner Park en exhibición un año hasta la próxima primavera, antes que se vendan los caballos, y las ganancias irán a la Omaha Police Fundation.

Siete de los caballos están dedicados especialmente a oficiales, tres que murieron en la línea del deber, cuatro muertos por problemas de salud. Un caballo está dedicado a todos los oficiales muertos. Una estatua de bronce en forma de perro es para Kobus, el primer perro policía que murió en la línea del deber. Experiencia Comunitaria de Aprendizaje 23 estudiantes de Bryan Middle School desarrollaron varios proyectos de arte, aprendieron habilidades para hablar en público y en red, y se involucraron en una actividad de recolección de fondos como parte del proyecto de aprendizaje conducido esta primavera en colaboración con el Latino Center of The Midlands y la Academia de Aprendizaje de UNO. Los estudiantes de séptimo grado de Language Art Honors trabajaron bajo la guía de su maestra, Diane Donalson, en este proyecto que incluyó visitas a la UNO y aprendizaje sobre relaciones públicas a través de la interacción con el Profesor Doctor Dave Ogden y sus estudiantes de Relaciones Públicas.

Loa alumnos presentaron su proyecto final el 12 de mayo al personal del LCM y a miembros de la comunidad durante un almuerzo, donde compartieron con los invitados sus logros, discutieron sus proyectos de arte y los animaron a participar en el Omaha Gives! EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND PROPERLY HANDLING OUR EMOTIONS

lejandro (not his real name) has concluded the second year of high school. During his enrollment at public schools, he excelled with great grades, securing the first place in math class.

Now that schools are on vacation, his teachers invited him to join as a volunteer at several non-profit organizations, but the teenager does not feel capable of socializing and, even though he wants to help, going out of his room to meet strangers makes him anxious.

His parents have no idea why a student like him, who excels at science-related courses, has a problem socializing with other teenagers who can easily adapt to new community-based tasks even if their grades aren’t so good.

“Is my son not as intelligent as we think he is?” asks Alejandro’s concerned mother.

But, what is intelligence? Going back in history, psychology has for many years worked towards evaluating people and their skills as a very important and specific item in their field of study.

In that sense, the many tests in the field of intelligence have been one of the most evaluated factors. “According to some authors, intelligence is the way a person adapts to their environment (and how well he/she does it),” said Daniel Gutierrez Larotta, a Master of Psychology and consulting director of Stoopen & Human, a Mexico City-based human resources firm. He adds that it simply means that “a person is more intelligent if he/she can adapt to changes.”

During his most recent visit to Omaha, Larotta explained that it used to be that the intelligence test would only focus on cognitive intelligence. We can, for example, remember the tests that measure a person’s IQ - which many of you have probably taken - and which “are used to classify the people who have more skills of a certain type vs. other types of skills.”

However, Larotta mentioned that “at some point it was discovered that people who obtained a higher score for cognitive intelligence did not necessarily do better in life,” concluding that “there were other skills that were just as important.”

This is how psychology created the concept of multiple intelligences.

Said concept states that “intelligence is not only cognitive because it can also be musical intelligence, or aural, or visual or a type if intelligence that has more to do with handling colors or even with performing physical activities,” as would be the case for a high-performance aesthete. Thanks to the study of multiple intelligences it was discovered that there are two skills that are very important and that, as Larotta mentioned, “can predict academic and professional success.” Those skills are interpersonal skills and intrapersonal skills.

This is “our ability to emotionally handle ourselves (interpersonal) and how we establish relationships with a second or third person (intrapersonal).” The evolution of both concepts takes us to what is currently known as emotional intelligence.

“Emotional intelligence is basically being able to say ‘this happened, and there’s nothing for me to do but turn the

page,’” said Larotta, “and it has to do with productively handling our emotions.”

To quote an example shared by Alejandro’s mother, during a trip to Mexico the boy was to visit the Science and Technology Museum in Xalapa, Veracruz where his grandparents live. But due to a scheduling issue, the family couldn’t visit the museum and the boy got very mad at his parents and was angry during most of the time for the rest of the trip.

This is why it’s important we discuss selfknowledge as well. “One of the basic concepts,” Larotta explained, “is that emotional intelligence has to do with the fact that a person knows itself and knows what his/her strong skills are as well as his/her weaknesses.”

Larotta emphasized that self-knowledge is related to aspects of human beings such as empathy and self-control, which translates into expressing our emotions in a more productive way. “If I can realize that I’m becoming angrier,” he adds, “it will be easier for me to control said emotion.”

The first step on the path to self-knowledge is that we accept we are individuals with virtues and flaws and that other people are the same. For Alejandro, it was unforgivable that his parents didn’t take into consideration the distance to the museum as well as the traffic of larger cities. He would have had more fun meeting his cousins who showered him with gifts and wanted to hear what he had to say about his life in the United States.

Cognitively speaking, Alejandro is very intelligent, but can he develop the emotional intelligence required for him to finally establish relationships with other people? “Unlike other types of skills that are very hard to develop,” Larotta said, “the concept of emotional intelligence is based on behavior that can be learned and properly developed.”

The answer then is a resounding “yes!”

Art Horses of Honor Last Friday, May 20 marked tha one-year anniversary of the day Officer Kerrie Orozco was fatally shot as she and other law enforcement officers tried to arrest a fugitive, and that day was the opening ceremony for Horses of Honor at Turner Park. Unveiled were eight painted horses honoring officers who have been killed or catastrophically injured in the line of duty.

Horses of Honor is a public art campaign that started in Chicago in 2014 and this year is the first time Omaha will serve as a host.

There are eight horses paying tribute to Omaha’s fallen police officers, and an Omaha artist designed each statue. They will stand in Turner Park at Midtown Crossing for a year until next spring, when the horses will be sold with proceeds benefiting the Omaha Police Foundation.

Seven of the horses are dedicated to specific officers, three killed in the line of duty, four felled by health problems. One horse is dedicated to all fallen officers. Community Learning Experience Twenty-three students from Bryan Middle School developed art projects, learned public speaking and networking skills, and engaged in a fundraising activity as part of a service learning project conducted this spring in collaboration with the Latino Center of the Midlands and the UNO Service Learning Academy.

Bryan Middle School students worked with Latino Center of the Midlands’ (LCM) staff to develop strategies that would help increase the community’s awareness of services provided by the Community Services and Technical Assistance (CSTA) program and its participation in this year’s 24-hour charitable challenge, Omaha Gives!

Seventh grade Language Arts Honors students worked under the guidance of their teacher, Ms. Diane Donaldson, Language Arts and Yearbook Adviser at Bryan Middle School. This project was also part of a larger component to service learning, one which included fieldtrips to UNO and learning about public relations principles through interactions with Professor Dr. Dave Ogden and students from his Public Relations class.

A service learning celebration was hosted for students on Thursday, May 12. Students presented their finished projects to staff of the Latino Center of the Midlands as well as to other community members present during a luncheon. Students networked with guests, discussed their art projects, spoke about their service learning experience, served as greeters, registered guests, and encouraged others to support the Latino Center of the Midlands during Omaha Gives!

The Community Services and Technical Assistance (CSTA) program of the Latino Center of the Midlands is conducting an annual fund drive during the month of May. Activities conducted during the fund drive include participation in Omaha Gives! on Wednesday, May 25. Proceeds received from this event allows the CSTA program to provide navigation services, technical assistance and access to community resources for the Latino immigrant community, thereby improving the self-sufficiency and quality of life of individuals and families served.
