LA EMPRESA ZAMORA ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTA OTRO EXITOSO CONCIERTO CON LA ARROLLADORA BANDA EL LIMÓN ______________________________________________________

on casi las 8 de la noche y todo esta listo en el Mid America Center para un nuevo concierto. El ingeniero de sonido ultima detalles, la gente de seguridad esta en sus lugares, los de taquilla, artistas y el resto del personal de Zamora Entertainment, empresa organizadora del evento, aguardan tranquilamente el tiempo de abrir las puertas; mientras que afuera, una enorme fila de personas espera ansiosamente para poder ingresar.

La razón es que finalmente llego el día de poder disfrutar un concierto regional mexicano con figuras de talla internacional, como “la Arrolladora Banda el Limón” y Gerardo Ortiz, quienes difícilmente se hubieran juntado en Omaha, por sus apretadas agendas de trabajo.

Más de 3,000 personas abarrotarían el lugar en unos minutos. Sin embargo, esto no rompe la calma de David Zamora, mánager de operaciones de la empresa, he hijo del fundador de la misma, Pedro Zamora, quien se muestra confiado en su equipo de trabajo, acostumbrado a trabajar con grandes celebridades de la música.

“Desde hace aproximadamente 15 años mi papá comenzó a realizar conciertos en Omaha y la ciudad ha crecido con nosotros. Desde que usábamos el Sokol Hall, Caballo Blanco y otros salones locales, hasta llegar a espacios como este, lo cual nos llena de gusto porque nuestro objetivo es ofrecer evento de calidad en los mejores lugares, para complacer a la gente”, dijo David.

Sin embargo, la historia de Zamora Entertainment va más atrás de sus inicios en Omaha.

“Mis padres abrieron un restaurante en Chicago [1985] y al poco tiempo utilizaron el sótano para ofrecer entretenimiento”, explico David, quién indico que así comenzaron a traer artistas de México, dando inicio a su carrera en la organización de conciertos musicales.

Pronto, se convirtieron en una agencia de promoción y representación de artistas hispanos y talentos de México, Centro y Sudamérica. Ya para 1995 se habían expandido a Nueva York, abarcando la costa este de Estados Unidos, e incursionando también en la radio, con la creación del programa llamado “La Maquina Musical”.

Hoy, Zamora Entertainment Inc. es la empresa más grande que produce eventos Hispanos en los estados de Nebraska, Iowa, Nueva York, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Kansas, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Nueva Jersey, Virginia, Maryland y Washington DC. “Omaha nos gusta mucho porque es diferente a otras ciudades donde trabajamos”, expuso David, agregando: “Omaha no está soportada por un centro urbano tan grande como las plazas de Minneapolis o Nueva York, que son más metropolitanas y ahí precisamente esta lo que la hace diferente. Aquí la gente se divierte más porque viene precisamente a eso, a divertirse y no a buscar problemas. Por eso todo es más relajado y sin tanto estrés en esta ciudad”.

Cabe mencionar que la buena organización y reputación de Zamora Entertainment les permite reclutar y producir a más de 100 grupos hispanos en los Estados Unidos, como: Los Ti-

gres del Norte, Los Temerarios, Espinoza Paz, Banda El Recodo, Conjunto Primavera, Montez de Durango, Diana Reyes, entre otros.

Lo que comenzó como un proyecto en el sótano de un pequeño restaurante, hoy se ha convertido en una fuente de empleo para casi 1,000 personas, sumando incluso la adquisición de sus propias emisoras de radio en Birmingham / Lexington, Alabama, Des Moines, Iowa, Minnesota y Minneapolis.

“Nos preocupa mantener la parte familia y cuidamos mucho nuestra conexión con Omaha y el resto de ciudades donde trabajamos, para saber qué pasa y qué es lo que quiere la gente”.

Enfatizó Zamora.

“Hace un mes fue todo un logro traer a banda MS, porque tenía muchos años de no venir a Omaha y están saturados de fechas, pero lo conseguimos y más de 5,000 personas disfrutaron el evento. Y aun que sabemos que el mercado más grande es el regional mexicano, en Omaha está creciendo la demanda por otro tipo de artistas, por eso trajimos hace unos días al grupo Plan B y la buena respuesta de la gente nos ayuda a saber que hay oportunidad de seguir explorando en esta ciudad con otros géneros y artistas como Maluma o Prince Royce”, dijo.

Por fin, las luces se encendieron y las bocinas retumbaron para dar comienzo al abarrotado concierto.

Como preámbulo al artista estelar, se calentó el escenario con la presentación de Jorge Carmona, Los Mígueles y Alktraz Oficial.

Posteriormente, el llamado “Rey del Corrido” Gerardo Ortiz, hizo gala de su talento como cantante y compositor, especialmente en los subgéneros de norteño-banda y corridos.

El broche de oro ocurrió cuando subió al escenario la agrupación sinaloense “La Arrolladora Banda El Limón”, de René Camacho, como parte de su gira titulada “Libre otra vez”.

En un cálido mensaje a la gente de Omaha los vocalistas Jorge Luis Medina Ramos, José Isidro Beltrán Cuen y Vincen Meléndez García, agradecieron la presencia del público.

“Estamos contento de estar con ustedes y queremos que se diviertan mucho”, dijo el primer vocalista de la banda, Jorge Medina.

Todos sus temas fueron coreados, aplaudidos y bailados. Además, que también presentó su más reciente sencillo “Me va a pesar”, de su nuevo álbum “Libre otra vez”.

De esta forma, igual que al comienzo el evento culminó en calma, desbordando dicha y algarabía en un publicó que al ir saliendo del Mid America Center dibujaba un rostro complacido.

David Zamora no dejo de trabajar, aun cuando el lugar estaba ya vacío. Y en ese silencio dijo: “De parte de la empresa le doy las gracias a la gente que nos apoyo en este concierto. Nosotros venimos a Omaha para traer eventos inolvidables que se vuelvan parte de los mejores recuerdos de la gente. Por eso nos seguiremos esforzando por conseguir a los mejores artistas, para deleite de las personas de esta ciudad”.

PRESENTS ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL CONCERT WITH LA ARROLLADORA BANDA EL LIMON

t’s almost 8 p.m. and everything is ready at the Mid -America Center for a new concert. The sound engineer checks some final details, the security staff is ready, those working at the ticket window are ready, and so are the artists and the rest of the Zamora Entertainment staff, the company in charge of the event, waits for the doors to open. Meanwhile, people are anxiously lining up on the outside to be able to get in.

The reason is that it is finally time to enjoy a regional Mexican music concert with international artists such as La Arrolladora Banda El Limon and Gerardo Ortiz, who otherwise would probably have had a hard time performing at the same event due to their packed schedules.

Over 3,000 people entered the venue in a matter of minutes. This, however, does not worry David Zamora, operating manager of the company and son of founder Pedro Zamora, who is very confident that his staff will get the job done since they’re used to working with big music artists.

“It’s been 15 years since my dad started to work on concerts in Omaha and the city has grown along with us. From the time when we used Sokol Hall, Caballo Blanco and other local halls up to large venues such as this, we are always thrilled about working towards our goal of offering the best possible events at the best possible locations so that we can please the public,” said David.

However, the story of Zamora Entertainment goes way back, before Omaha.

“My parents opened a restaurant in Chicago [1985] and soon after that, they used the basement to offer entertainment for their guests,” explained David, who mentions this is how they began to bring artists from Mexico as they got started in the business of musical concerts.

They soon became an agency to promote and represent Latino artist and talent from Mexico, Central, and South America. By 1995 they had already expanded to New York, working on the east coast of the United States, and they even went into radio after creating the “La Maquina Musical” show.

Today Zamora Entertainment Inc. is the biggest production company for Latino events in Nebraska, Iowa, New York, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Kansas, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC. “We like Omaha because it is very different from other cities where we work,” said David. “Omaha is not supported by an urban center as big as other locations such as Minneapolis or New York, which are more metropolitan, and therein lays the difference. People have more fun here because they attend precisely for that, to have fun and not to get in trouble. This is why everything is more relaxed and almost stress-free.”

We must mention that the great work and reputation of Zamora Entertainment allow them to recruit and produce over 100 Latino artists in the United States, such as Los Tigres del Norte, Los Temerarios, Espinoza Paz, Banda El Recodo, Conjunto Primavera, Montez de Durango, and Diana Reyes, to name a few.

What started as a project in the basement of a small restaurant has today become a massive company that employs close to 1,000 people, a company that has even purchased its own radio stations in Birmingham / Lexington, Alabama, Des Moines, Iowa, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

“We work to maintain this as a family, and we take good care of our connection with Omaha and the rest of the cities we work at so that we always know what is going on and what it is that people want,” emphasized Zamora.

“A month ago we had a huge success and managed to bring MS here because it had been a while since they managed to visit Omaha, and their schedule is packed, but we managed to do it, and over 5,000 people enjoyed that event. And even though we know the biggest market is the regional Mexican genre, Omaha has a large demand for other music artists as well, which is why a few days ago we brought Plan B here and the way people responded to that helps us know there is an opportunity worth exploring in this city with other genres and artists such as Maluma or Prince Royce,” he said.

And then, the lights turned on and the speakers shook as the crowded concert was about to start. Before the main event, the stage saw the performance of Jorge Carmona, Los Migueles, and Alktraz Oficial.

A bit later Gerardo Ortiz, the “Rey del Corrido”, took the stage and showcased his talent as singer and composer, especially in subgenres such as norteñobanda and the ever popular corridos.

And then, the lights dimmed as Sinaloense group “La Arrolladora Banda El Limon” of Rene Camacho began to perform in a show that is part of their “Libre Otra Vez” tour.

In a great gesture to the people of Omaha, singers Jorge Luis Medina Ramos, Jose Isidro Beltran Cuen and Vincen Melendez Garcia thanked the audience for coming to see them.

“We are very happy to be here with you, and we want you all to have fun,” said Jorge Medina.

People sang, clapped and danced to all of their songs, and the audience loved hearing “Me Va A Pesar,” their latest single from their new album Libre Otra Vez .

And then, when it was all over, the event ended as it had begun, with a sense of calm and joy from an audience that exited the Mid-America Center with a big smile in their faces.

David Zamora didn’t stop working even when the place was empty, and in this silence he said: “On behalf of the company I want to thank everyone who came to support us in this concert. We come to Omaha to bring events that people will never forget and that will become part of their best memories. This is why we continue to work hard so that we can bring the best artists to please and entertain the people of this city.”

OMAHA SE UNE A XALAPA EN SU ESFUERZO POR SALVAR VIDAS Por Marina Rosado

E

l martes 24 de mayo la Alcaldesa de Omaha, Jean Stothert, acompañada de Dan Olsen, Jefe Interino del Departamento de Bomberos de Omaha (OFD) y de Scott Moore, Vicepresidente de Relaciones Corporativas del Ferrocarril Union Pacific (UP), encabezaron la ceremonia donde se realizó la donación de cuatro ambulancias y equipo de rescate, a la ciudad de Xalapa, ubicada en el estado mexicano de Veracruz.

El acto contó con la destacada presencia del Alcalde de Xalapa, Américo Zúñiga Martínez quien viajó a este país acompañado del Regidor Primero del Ayuntamiento de Xalapa, Rogelio Álvarez Arroyo.

El singular evento tuvo lugar en el Museo Durham y fue conducido por Cynthia Buettner, Presidenta de la Junta Directiva de la Asociación de Ciudades Hermanas de Omaha (OSCA), quien dio la bienvenida a los invitados especiales, entre quienes se encontraba la Cónsul de México para Iowa y Nebraska, Guadalupe Sánchez Salazar.

Xalapa es una de las seis Ciudades Hermanas de Omaha, cuya armoniosa relación se hizo oficial hace una década a través de OSCA. Como una organización no lucrativa, OSCA estableció su primer hermanamiento con la ciudad de Shizuoka en Japón, hace 50 años, continuando de este modo con la propuesta que desde 1956 hiciera el entonces presidente americano Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Lo anterior fue recordado por la Alcaldesa Jean Stothert, quien fue la primera en tomar la palabra, haciendo énfasis en que la premisa de dicho programa es la de “unir a personas de diferentes culturas para celebrar y apreciar sus diferencias”.

Acertadamente, la Alcaldesa Stothert indicó: “Vivimos en una sociedad internacio-

nal, pero esta colaboración entre el Departamento de Bomberos de Omaha, Union Pacific y la Ciudad de Xalapa, nos muestra qué tan pequeño realmente es el mundo”.

A su vez, Dan Olsen del OFD expresó que los bomberos a nivel mundial “tienen un lazo especial y no importa en cuál país, estado o ciudad vivamos, nos llamamos entre nosotros hermanos y hermanas”.

Es por ello, que aunado a las ambulancias, el OFD decidió donar también siete herramientas hidráulicas del tipo jaws of life (mandíbulas de vida o cizallas, para cortar artefactos durante labores de rescate). Junto con como 69 equipos de respiración autónoma (SCBA), para que como Olsen dijo, los bomberos y socorristas “puedan respirar en ambientes que son peligrosos para la salud, mientras están rescatando víctimas”.

Gracias al considerable apoyo de la empresa ferroviaria UP, éstos significativos donativos recorrerán en tren el trayecto desde Omaha hasta Laredo, Texas, donde la compañía Kansas City Southern de México los transportará hasta Xalapa. Será un viaje de 2,000 millas, lo que llevará varias semanas, en cuando finalice la documentación pertinente.

Al respecto, Scott Moore de UP explicó que se requerirán de dos vagones de doble nivel para transportar la preciada carga “de un modo más seguro y eficiente”.

Para Xalapa, una ciudad con 700,000 habitantes, un regalo de tal magnitud representa la oportunidad de que todos puedan tener acceso, durante una emergencia, a los servicios principales de salud tal como lo recalcó el Alcalde Américo Zúñiga: “Existen comunidades muy alejadas de los hospitales, por lo que estos vehículos serán muy útiles para atender las llamadas de emergencia del Depar-

tamento de Bomberos y del Departamento de Protección Civil”.

“Geográficamente somos la ciudad más cercana participando en la asociación (OSCA) y eso nos permite fortalecer nuestra relación”, añadió Zúñiga para quien el generoso y solidario acto de la ciudad de Omaha, “es algo que atesoramos en nuestros corazones”.

En su emotivo discurso de agradecimiento, el mandatario subrayó: “El Departamento de Bomberos de Omaha no solamente es un grupo de héroes en Omaha, sino ahora también son un grupo de héroes en México”.

Durante su breve visita, el Alcalde Zúñiga comentó: “Nosotros venimos muy contentos, lo cierto es que han sido ya 10 años de un hermanamiento basado en el respeto, en la gratitud y en el reconocimiento de dos ciudades que tienen mucho en común a pesar de nuestras diferencias culturales”.

En lo que se refiere a las similitudes entre las regiones, Zúñiga dijo: “Tanto la ciudad de Omaha como la ciudad de Xalapa que tengo el honor de representar, son ciudades de gente trabajadora, de gente decente, donde apreciamos la cultura, el arte y por supuesto, en donde hemos tenido muestras de afecto y de amistad. Los reconocimientos mutuos que hemos hecho las ciudades han sido bastantes”.

Cabe mencionar que ya en el 2010, Omaha donó dos ambulancias a su ciudad hermana mexicana: “Y a la fecha se siguen utilizando en Xalapa y para nosotros, en lo más profundo de nuestro corazón, han sido objeto de gratitud y reconocimiento”.

Suman tres los viajes a Omaha que miembros del Ayuntamiento de Xalapa han hecho, y durante las dos ultimas visitas, Zúñiga ha podido estar presente: “La última visita (en el otoño del 2015) ayudó para que enlazáramos

a nuestras instituciones con las instituciones de Omaha. La visita que hicimos a ésa gran universidad que es la Universidad de Nebraska en Omaha y la visita que hemos hecho a planteles educativos, nos despertaron muchas inquietudes, como el intercambio cultural y académico que se puede llevar entre las ciudades”.

Lo que más le ha gustado a Zúñiga de Omaha es: “Sin lugar a dudas su hospitalidad, su gente. La gente de Omaha nos ha recibido siempre con cariño y respeto, nos gusta mucho venir. Debo ser el cuarto alcalde que ha estado visitando esta hermosa ciudad y lo que más me agrada es el ánimo que nos encontramos, un ánimo cada vez más renovado por seguir enlazando a estas dos ciudades”.

Para el Alcalde Zúñiga, los intercambios culturales y artísticos, tendrán un espacio particular en las futuras agendas entre ambas ciudades: “En Xalapa como se sabe, tenemos el segundo museo de antropología más importante de Latinoamérica, tenemos una orquesta sinfónica altamente reconocida en el país, la más antigua de México; tenemos una sala de conciertos muy hermosa y bueno pues son muchas riquezas que queremos compartir y con quién mejor que con nuestra ciudad hermana que tanto nos ha dado y que tanto nos ha compartido como es Omaha”.

Por último, antes de tomar el avión de regreso a su país, el jefe de gobierno de la ciudad de Xalapa se despidió enviando un cálido mensaje a sus compatriotas que radican en la región: “Para todos mis amigos, paisanos mexicanos que son nuestro orgullo, el orgullo de nuestra nación y que están trabajando en esta hermosísima parte de los Estados Unidos, saludos desde Xalapa, la capital de Veracruz. Para ustedes nuestro reconocimiento, nuestro aprecio y respeto”.

OMAHA JOINS XALAPA IN AN EFFORT TO SAVE LIVES

n Tuesday, May 24, Jean Stothert, Mayor of Omaha, Dan Olsen, Interim Chief of the Omaha Fire Department (OFD), and Scott Moore, Corporate Relations VP for Union Pacific Railroads (UP), led an event where four ambulances and rescue equipment were donated to the city of Jalapa, in Veracruz, Mexico.

Americo Zuñiga Martinez, Mayor of Xalapa, traveled here from Mexico along with Rogelio Alvarez Arroyo, First City Councilman of the Xalapa City Hall.

This special event took place at the Durham Museum and was led by Cynthia Buettner, President of the Board of Directors for Omaha Sister Cities Association (OSCA), who welcomed the many special guests in attendance, such as Guadalupe Sanchez Salazar, Mexican Consul for Iowa and Nebraska. Xalapa is one of six Omaha Sister Cities, a relationship that became official a decade ago thanks to the OSCA. As a non-profit organization, OSCA established its first relationship with the city of Shizuoka in Japan over 50 years ago, working on the proposal made in 1956 by United States President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

This was mentioned by Mayor Jean Stothert, who was the first to speak at the event, emphasizing how the goal of said program is to “unite people of different cultures to celebrate and appreciate their differences.”

She continued: “We live in an international society, and this collaboration between the Omaha Fire Department, Union Pacific and the city of Xalapa shows us that the world is actually smaller than we think.”

Dan Olsen of the OFD expressed that firefighters worldwide “have a special bond, and no matter what country, state or city we live in, we all call each other brothers and sisters.”

Because of this, on top of the ambulances the OFD decided to also donate seven hydraulic tools of the jaws of life variety (which are used to cut through objects during rescue missions), and 69 self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) devices. Said devices, as Olsen said, al-

low firefighters and rescue workers to “be able to breathe in environments that are dangerous to their health as they rescue victims.”

Thanks to the great support of UP, these considerable donations will travel by train from Omaha to Laredo, Texas, where Kansas City Southern of Mexico will transport them the rest of the way to Xalapa. It will be a 2,000mile trip that will take several weeks - as soon as all documentation is final.

Scott Moore of UP explained that two double level wagons will be required to transport this precious cargo “in a safe and efficient way.”

For Xalapa, a city with a population of 700,000, a gift this big represents a great opportunity to provide access to their people to the main health services during an emergency, said Mayor Americo Zuñiga: “There are communities that are very far from hospitals which is why these vehicles will be useful to help with emergency calls from the Fire Department and from the Department of Civil Protection”.

“Geographically we are the city closest to the Association (OSCA), and this allows us to strengthen our relationship,” added Zuñiga, to whom the generous solidarity effort from the city of Omaha “is something we will forever treasure in our hearts.”

In his emotional thank you speech, he stated: “The Omaha Fire Department is not only a group of heroes for Omaha, it is now also a group of heroes in Mexico.”

During his visit, Mayor Zuñiga had this to say: “We are very happy to be here. It’s been ten years of working together based on mutual respect and gratitude, as well as the acknowledgment of two cities that have a lot in common despite our cultural differences.”

As for the similarities between both regions, Zuñiga added: “Both the city of Omaha and the city of Xalapa, which I have the honor of representing, are cities full of hardworking people, of decent individuals, where we appreciate culture and art, and we, of course, have shown our friendship and affection. Both cities have

acknowledged the other’s many accomplishments.”

We must mention that back in 2010, Omaha donated two ambulances to the Mexican city: “And both continue to be used in Xalapa and we, from the bottom of our hearts, are very thankful for them.”

Members of the Xalapa municipality have visited Omaha three times, and Zuñiga has been part of the last two: “The last time (during Fall 2015) it helped to link our institutions with the institutions of Omaha. We visited the great University of Nebraska Omaha as well as other schools, and this sparked an interest in us for participating in cultural and academic exchanges at both of our cities.”

What Zuñiga liked the most about Omaha was “without a doubt the hospitality of its people. The people of Omaha have always welcomed us with a lot of love and respect, so we love to visit. I’m probably the fourth Mayor that has visited this beautiful city, and what I like the most is that every time I visit, there’s more reasons for us to strengthen our bonds.”

For Mayor Zuñiga, cultural and artistic exchanges will definitely be part of the agenda of both cities: “In Xalapa, as you know, we have the second most important anthropology museum in Latin America, a highly renowned symphonic orchestra, the oldest in Mexico, a beautiful concert hall, and more that we want to share, and who better to do that with than our sister city of Omaha that has given us so much and shared so much with us.”

Before boarding the plane that would take him back home, the Mayor of Xalapa said goodbye with a warm message to his fellow countrymen and woman who live in the region: “To all of my friends, to all the Mexican paisanos who are our pride and joy, the pride of our nation, who are working hard in this beautiful part of the United States, I want to send a warm hello from Xalapa, the capital city if Veracruz. For you our utmost acknowledgment, admiration and respect.”

YESENIA OSORIO INTRODUCE LA TERAPIA DE SAL EN NUESTRA COMUNIDAD POR MARINA ROSADO

A

l llegar a SALT se nos pide dejar nuestro calzado afuera y ponernos en los pies las cubiertas desechables de color azul. Una vez adentro de la habitación, escogemos los sillones ubicados frente a la pared construida con bloques de sal, con textura y color similares a las lámparas que se exhiben en el vestíbulo para su venta.

A puerta cerrada y reclinados cómodamente, nos dejamos llevar por la relajante atmósfera generada por los cambios de color de las luces, mientras se escucha una música tenue en el llamado cuarto de sal.

Se trata de nuestra primer sesión de haloterapia y aunque las partículas de sal son casi imperceptibles en el ambiente, comenzamos a toser. Lejos de ser una molestia, esta reacción nos genera cierto alivio por ser “el primer paso de la limpieza” de nuestras vías respiratorias, tal como nos lo advirtió Yesenia Osorio, propietaria del lugar.

SALT abrió en mayo, pero desde el 2012 Osorio

comenzó a investigar las propiedades de la sal: “Me interesó mucho porque mi hijo más pequeño tiene muchos problemas de alergias y mi esposo también, así como la piel reseca”.

La empresaria hispana dijo que se entusiasmó inmediatamente, considerándola como algo viable para que sus familiares “no tuvieran que tomar tanto medicamento para controlar sus enfermedades”, pero le costó trabajo convencer a su esposo: “Hasta el año pasado, cuando estuvimos en un cuarto de sal en Arizona y comprobó sus beneficios”.

“Inhale, exhale y recupérese” es el lema de SALT y lo seguimos al pie de la letra durante los 45 minutos de sesión (tiempo normal para adultos) en un espacio destinado a albergar cómodamente a unas 10 personas. EN MEMORIA DE: JOSEPH “JOSE” RAMIREZ Joseph “Jose” Ramirez , conocido defensor de los derechos civiles y líder en la comunidad latina, falleció la semana pasada a la edad de 90 años. Ramírez fue miembro fundador del Chicano Awareness Center, ahora conocido como Latino Center of the Midlands.

Campaña Mujer Latina Adelante El Midlands Latino Community Development Corporation comenzó una campaña para empoderar a 300 mujeres latinas que generalmente están relegadas al hogar. YESENIA OSORIO BRINGS SALT THERAPY TO THE COMMUNITY

A

fter arriving at SALT, we are asked to leave our shoes outside and to place blue disposable covers on our feet. Once inside the room, we make our way to one of the sofas in front of the wall built with blocks of salt, with a texture and color similar to the lamps exhibited in the vestibule that are available for sale.

After closing the door and as we comfortably recline in our seats, we let ourselves be surrounded by the relaxing atmosphere generated by the changes in the color of the lights as we listen to some mellow music in what could be called the salt room.

It is our first halotherapy session and, even though the tiny salt particles are almost imperceptible, we begin to cough. Instead of being annoying, this reaction makes us feel good, and it is “the first cleansing step” for our airways, as stated by owner Yesenia Osorio.

researching the properties of salt since 2012: “I was very interested in this because my youngest son and my husband had allergy issues, as well as dry skin.”

The Latino entrepreneur was thrilled and figured this could be a viable option so that her family members “didn’t have to be taking so much medicine to control their health issues,” but it was hard to convince her husband. “It wasn’t until last year when we both went into a salt room in Arizona that he managed to experience its benefits first hand.”

Osorio is a Licensed Massage Therapist, specializing in oncological massage (for people with cancer), and she has plenty of experience and is known because of her former Spa, Massage by Yese (38th and Leavenworth St.).

Now at SALT she has a larger and more attractive location, and Osorio will continue to offer therapeutic and relaxation massages as well as several types of facial massages, but we definitely believe that the salt room will be one of her most requested services because there’s nothing like it in the city or its surrounding areas: “The salt used in the treatment is pharmaceutical salt (it is not the type of salt we use at home), and since it is so small you’ll be breathing it and have it enter your lungs so you can detox, but don’t worry because it won’t stay in there since your body will naturally get rid of it.”

“Inhale, exhale and recover” is the SALT motto, and we follow said instructions during our 45-minute session (the normal duration for an adult) in a space that can fit up to 10 people. After we were done, we noted a salty taste on our lips, and Osorio reminded us that even though the therapy “is done with fully clothed people,” the salt we receive will help to improve the look of our skin and hair “because it stimulates and cleanses the scalp.”

In Memoriam: Joseph “Jose” Ramirez Joseph “Jose” Ramirez, the noted civil rights advocate and leader in the Latino community, passed away last week at the age of 90. Ramirez was a founding member of the Chicano Awareness Center, now known as the Latino Center of the Midlands. In the early 1970s, he pioneered the introduction of Spanishlanguage services at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, where he was a deacon. He and his wife, Agatha, had six children. Along with Agatha, Ramirez is survived by four children: Joseph Ramirez Jr., Teresa Cherko, Francis Ramirez, and Roger Ramirez.

2016 Omaha Gives! Enjoy this public art campaing. Friday, May 20 marked one-year anniversary of the day Officer Kerrie Orozco was fatally shot as she and other law enforcement officers tried to arrest a fugitive. For that reasson, Omaha will serve as a host to this exhibition called: Horses of Honor, consisting of eight horses paying tribute to Omaha’s fallen police officers, and an Omaha artist designed each statue. They will stand in Turner Park at Midtown Crossing for a year until next spring.
