sarán con ellos”, dijo García. “Esperamos poder expandir nuestra red de trabajo con otras instituciones y artistas. Esa es una gran ventaja de nuestra residencia. No solamente estamos brindando un lugar donde trabajar, tiempo para trabajar y un apoyo financiero, sino que también estamos tratando de proporcionar otras oportunidades a las que de otra forma no podrían tener acceso”.

García ha trabajado para que El Museo sea un enlace entre los artistas locales y los artistas que visitan. El año pasado desarrolló la exhibición Maíz con el Museo de Filatelia de Oaxaca (MUFI), un museo de estampillas de correo en Oaxaca, México. Doce artistas locales mostraron su trabajo al lado de 10 artistas de Oaxaca. El tema del maíz fue escogido debido a su importancia tanto para Nebraska como para Latinoamérica. Impresiones de cinco estampillas de correo mostrando diversas variedades de maíz fueron seleccionadas de la colección del MUFI y los artistas crearon trabajos inspirados en las imágenes. La exhibición estuvo disponible aquí durante cinco meses y viajó al MUFI durante abril en donde continuará instalada hasta septiembre. Maíz es uno de los diversos intercambios interculturales organizados por García.

Abrir las puertas a una comunidad internacional de artistas descendientes de mexicanos le hizo ganadora de un premio de arte por logros de vida (lifetime achievement) otorgado por el gobierno mexicano en el 2015.

Sus esfuerzos incluyen una asociación a largo plazo con Humberto Chávez, cuyas conexiones y relaciones artísticas se extienden por todo México. Esos lazos ofrecen la posibilidad de que los artistas residentes de El Museo puedan exponer su trabajo ante un público más amplio. “Esa es una inmensa oportunidad para nuestros artistas”, dijo García.

Además de estar in situ durante 15 horas por semana, ella nos comenta: “Hay muy pocos requisitos para la residencia. Les estamos dando la libertad de crear, experimentar y explorar como les sea necesario. No estamos demandando que tengan trabajos listos para que al final sean exhibidos, pero presentaremos su trabajo cuando esté listo”.

Los tres artistas planean usar nuevos medios o regresar a medios anteriores para avanzar en proyectos sobre los que ya están trabajando.

Olivo hizo eco sobre un sentimiento compartido: “Nosotros somos responsables de abrir el camino para los artistas del Sur de Omaha y de las áreas que le rodean”, usando la residencia a su “potencial completo”.

García espera que los artistas sean embajadores del programa. Ya ha llamado la atención de artistas latinos y no latinos de todo el país, aunque por ahora solamente es para artistas latinos que vivan dentro de un radio de 70 millas de Omaha. Ella tiene la intención de en el 2017 expandir el programa a dos o tres rondas de residentes. Las inscripciones para la siguiente ronda se abrirán en enero.

La residencia es posible en parte por una subvención del National Endowment for the Arts de $20,000 dólares, obtenido en la primera vez que El Museo solicitó fondos directos del NEA. “Nos dio mucho gusto recibirlo y esperamos que las personas lo vean reflejado en nuestro crecimiento y en la continuación de lo que comenzamos hace 23 años”, dijo García.

Mi Casa es su Casa NUEVO PROGRAMA DE RESIDENCIA DE ARTISTAS EN EL MUSEO LATINO APOYA LA PRÁCTICA DE LOS ARTISTAS LATINOS LOCALES Por Leo Adam Biga

L

os artistas son muy diversos, pero un problema fundamental al que todos se enfrentan en algún momento es encontrar un lugar donde practicar sus habilidades y poder mostrar su arte. El reto puede ser mayor para color artistas que tal vez pueden no tener acceso a instalaciones y materiales, además de a círculos de influencia. El Museo Latino está ayudando a cubrir esta necesidad con su nuevo Programa de Residencia de Artistas en apoyo a los artistas latinos en el área.

El programa continua con lo iniciado con las residencias internacionales de las que el museo fue anfitrión, cumpliendo así con el sueño de Magdalena García, fundadora y directora ejecutiva, de ofrecer una residencia para los artistas locales.

Bart Vargas, Hugo Zamorano y Aarón Olivo, todos ellos de Omaha, forman parte de la primera clase. Ellos crearán en el museo en julio y agosto durante sus residencias de dos meses.

García comenta que cada uno de los artistas se encuentra en una etapa diferente en su carrera, además de que cada uno trabaja con un medio diferente. Apoyar a los artistas de diversas disciplinas y brindarles un “espacio en blanco” en donde crear es la misión de la residencia. También lo es exponer a los residentes a expertos artistas profesionales con trabajos reconocidos a nivel nacional e internacional.

“Tenemos mucho talento y una gran necesidad en la comunidad local de artistas latinos”, comentó García. “No es solamente brindarles un espacio, es también proporcionarles los recursos necesarios para desarrollar su trabajo. Nosotros queremos brindarles una oportunidad estructuras y ver que pueden hacer con ella”.

Vargas, maestro de arte en la Universidad de Nebraska en Omaha y el más establecido de los tres artistas, explicó: “Una de las cosas que espero que se logre con esta residencia es fomentar una concientización sobre los artistas latinos en la comunidad de Omaha. Contamos con un próspero ambiente artístico en el área metropolitana, pero siento que los artistas latinos, o incluso los artistas que no son blancos, no tienen tanta promoción o no se ven tanto. Yo espero que esta residencia les brinde mayor visibilidad. Los espacios, materiales y el tiempo para poder crear arte, todo ello genera un costo para el artista. Toda vez que a un artista se le proporciona un espacio gratuito y apoyo financiero es una bendición”.

“La experiencia me ayudará a crecer pues tendré un espacio en donde trabajar fuera de mi casa”, dijo Zamorano, un reciente graduado de UNO. “Yo también estaré trabajando al lado de dos grandes artistas, lo cual siento que será muy bueno para aprender los unos de los otros y poder hablar sobre arte. Yo actualmente estoy trabajando con Aarón [Olivo] en un mural en la esquina de la calle 25 y la calle N en La Plaza de la Raza. Yo nunca he trabajado directamente con Bart, por lo que me emociona hacerlo”.

“El Museo Latino ha sido parte de nuestro vecindario por mucho tiempo y yo siempre he sentido una conexión como artista y como nativo del Sur de Omaha”, dijo Olivo. “Yo no soy un artista estudiado. Esto es algo nuevo para mí.

Solamente el estar en este ambiente ampliará mi visión tanto como artista como alguien que trabaja directamente en el vecindario”.

García ha agregado un componente de tutoría.

Humberto Chávez, artista mexicano, maestro de arte y administrador de arte, además fe Carlos Tortolero, fundador/presidente del National Museum of Mexican Art en Chicago, Carlos Tortolero, compartirán su conocimiento y experiencia sobre las exposiciones y los espacios para ello.

rtists are a diverse lot, but a fundamental issue they all face at some point is finding space to practice their craft and showcase their work. The challenge can be greater for artists of color who may lack access to facilities and materials as well as to circles of influence. El Museo Latino is helping fill that gap with its new Artist Residency Program in support of area Latino artists.

The program builds on international residencies the museum’s hosted, and it realizes a longheld dream of founder-executive director Magdalena Garcia to offer a residency for local artists.

Bart Vargas, Hugo Zamorano and Aaron Olivo, all of Omaha, comprise the first class. They will toil away at Museo in July and August during their two-month residencies. Garcia says each is at different stages in their careers and each works in different mediums. Supporting diverse artists where they are at and giving them a blank slate to create is the residency’s mission. So too is exposing residents to seasoned art professionals with national and international resumes.

“We have a lot of talent and a lot of need in the local Latino artist community,” Garcia said. “It isn’t just about giving them the space, it’s about giving them the resources to develop their work.

We want to provide them with a framework of opportunity and see where they can run with that.”

The most established of the three, Vargas, a University of Nebraska at Omaha art educator, explained, “One of the things I hope this residency does is promote awareness of Latino artists in the Omaha community. We have a thriving art scene in the metro area, but I feel Latino artists, or for that matter artists of color, are quieter or not seen as much. I hope this residency brings more visibility. Space, materials and time to make art are all costs to the artist. Anytime an artist is given free space and financial support, it is a blessing.”

“The experience will grow me in practice because I will have a space to work in outside of home,” said Zamorano, a recent UNO graduate.

“I will also be working alongside two great artists, which I think will be great for learning off each other and talking about art. I am currently working with Aaron [Olivo] on a mural at 25th and N in La Plaza De La Raza. I have never worked with Bart directly, so I am excited for that.”

“El Museo Latino has been a part of our neighborhood for a long time and I have always felt a connection as an artist and South Omaha native,” Olivo said. “I am by no means a studied artist.

This is a first for me, so every aspect will help me grow. Just the environment alone will broaden my view as an artist as well as someone who works directly in the neighborhood.”

Garcia has built in a mentoring component.

Mexican artist, art educator and art administrator Humberto Chavez and president-founder of the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, Carlos Tortolero, will share their expertise and experience about exhibiting and venues.

“Both guests will make studio visits with our resident artists and engage in discussions with

them,” Garcia said. “Hopefully we can expand our network of working with other institutions as well as other artists. That’s a real plus with our residency. We’re not just giving you a place to work, time to work, and a stipend, but we’re trying to provide some other opportunities you wouldn’t necessarily be able to get otherwise.”

Garcia has a history of making Museo a conduit between local and visiting artists. Just last year she developed the exhibition Maiz with Museo de Filatelia de Oaxaca (MUFI), a postage stamp museum in Oaxaca, Mexico. Twelve local artists showed work alongside that of 10 Oaxaca artists. The theme of corn was chosen due to its importance to both Nebraska and Latin America.

Prints of five postage stamps depicting different varieties of corn were selected from the MUFI collection and the artists created works inspired by the images. The exhibit ran five months here and traveled to MUFI last April, where it’s on view through September. Maiz is among many cross-cultural exchanges Garcia’s organized.

Opening doors for an international community of artists of Mexican descent earned her a lifetime achievement in the arts award from the Mexican government in 2015.

Her efforts include a long association with the well-connected Humberto Chavez, whose artistic relationships extend throughout Mexico. Those ties offer the possibility for Museo resident artists to get their work seen by wider audience. “That’s a huge window of opportunity for our artists,” Garcia says., Other than being on site for 15 hours a week, she says, “There are very few requirements with the residency. We’re giving them the freedom to create, to experiment and to explore as they see fit. We’re not demanding they have work ready to exhibit at the end. But we will accommodate their work when it’s ready.”

All three artists plan to try out new mediums will return to former mediums to further projects already underway.

Olivo echoed a shared sentiment in saying, “We are responsible for paving a path for artists here in South Omaha as well as the surrounding area” in using the residency to its “full potential.”

Garcia expects the artists to be program ambassadors. It has already drawn interest from Latino and non-Latino artists from around the nation, though for now it’s only for Latino artists living within a 70 mile radius of Omaha. She intends to expand the program to two or three rounds of residents in 2017. Applications for the next round open in January.

The residency is made possible in part by a $20,000 National Endowment for the Arts grant that marked the first time Museo applied for direct funding from the NEA. “We were thrilled to receive that and hopefully people see it as a reflection of our growth and the continuation of what we started out to do 23 years ago,” Garcia says.

elders OPCIONES DE COLEGIOS Y UNIVERSIDADES PARA LOS ESTUDIANTES DE NEBRASKA: COLEGIÓ DE SANTA MARÍA

Being a victim of a scam can be detrimental especially for our seniors who are a vulnerable population.

The majority of seniors are an easy target for scammers.

This age group is most likely to be victims of fraud scams, and they are less likely to report it. Many seniors at this age have memory problems and it makes it difficult to report a fraud. Some seniors have been victims of some type of scams in their lifetime, for example Health Care insurance fraud, funeral and cemetery fraud, telemarketing fraud, etc.

A lot of seniors do not know where to report a scam and others do not know that they’re a victim until they tell a family member or relative. There are seniors who don’t have a support system to help guide and help them to prevent drastic situations.

The Intercultural Senior Center provides programs and education to help seniors become aware of scams and how to prevent themselves from becoming victims.

Ofrecemos programas de grado asequibles a través de un amplio espectro de campos principales de estos tiempos, como enfermería, terapia ocupacional, estudios de asistente médico, la enseñanza con especialidades, la enseñanza para un cambio de carrera, negocios con énfasis en análisis y comunicación estratégica, estudios jurídicos y más,” dice Sara Hanson, Vicepresidente de Servicios de Inscripción del Colegio de Santa María. Hanson señala que los estudiantes de la zona en busca de seleccionar una universidad deben considerar CSM, ya que ofrecen una fundación sólida de artes para todas las carreras que se ofrecen en CSM. Las estudiantes que buscan un lugar para continuar su educación superior quizás no están seguras de qué campo de estudio a seguir.

CSM ofrece más de 30 programas de licenciatura y siete programas de posgrado y los recursos necesarios para ayudar a los estudiantes a encontrar su vocación. De hecho, Hanson dice que “La facultad en Colegio de Santa Maria trabajan de lado a lado con los estudiantes, estimulando a los estudiantes a descubrir su verdadero potencial y alcanzar la excelencia académica.

Nuestra relación de estudiantes-facultad de 10: 1 nos permite ofrecer clases pequeñas y poder dar la atención de uno-a-uno.”

El campo de la salud es un auge en todo el país y CSM ofrece una licenciatura en Ciencias de Licenciatura en Enfermería de tres años y cuatro años. Además, la institución ofrece una maestría de cinco años de terapia ocupacional que ayuda a los estudiantes a completar el

trabajo de campo en algunos de los centros de salud más importantes del país.

Hanson añade que CSM también ofrece análisis de negocios competitivos y los comandantes de comunicación estratégica que se mezclan el programa de negocios clásico con el trabajo del curso innovador y la experiencia práctica.

“Trabajar con los principales empresarios de negocios de la región, CSM diseñó el programa para ser único en el Medio Oeste, ofrece las habilidades y conocimientos necesarios para tener éxito en la sociedad rica en información del día presente,” dice Hanson.

CSM no sólo se asocia negocios del área para asegurar que sus estudiantes obtengan la mejor experiencia, sino que también se asocian con instituciones educativas locales. CMS se ha asociado con la Escuela de Derechos de la Universidad de Creighton en un título de abogado acelerado. Los estudiantes inscritos en este programa tienen la capacidad de ahorrarse un año de su licenciatura. Hanson señala que este programa de 3 + 3 permite que los estudiantes pasen sus primeros tres años de estudios de grado en CSM y durante su tercer año toman el LSAT y solicitan la admisión a la Escuela de Derechos de Creighton. “Una vez aceptado, su cuarto año de estudios de grado se convierte en su primer año de derechos en Creighton. Todos los créditos obtenidos durante el primer año de derecho se aplican al título de grado del estudiante en CSM,” dice Hanson.

puede ayudar a los estudiantes a descubrir su trayectoria profesional a través de una variedad de métodos.

Pagar la universidad es otro componente que los estudiantes tienen que tener en cuenta al aplicar a las universidades. Hanson dice que CSM ofrece un gran número de becas y subvenciones para ayudar a las mujeres a pagar su matrícula en CSM. La Beca de Logro Académico en CSM es una beca popular que oscila entre $ 7,000- $ 16,0000 por año. Esta beca se basa en el GPA de la escuela secundaria y puntaje de ACT o SAT. Los estudiantes con necesidades financieras pueden aplicar a una variedad de otras becas que incluyen la beca Catalina McAuley, la beca Marie Curie y otros.

CSM ofrece muchos recursos para los alumnos de nuevo ingreso y también se aseguran de preparar a los estudiantes en su salida de CSM. Los estudiantes en busca de oportunidades de empleo pueden conectarse con el Coordinador de Servicios de Carrera para revisar sus hojas de vida, desarrollar las habilidades en talleres, mira los listados de trabajo y una variedad de otros servicios. “Nuestros servicios de carrera ayudarán a los estudiantes a descubrir su carrera y cuando sea el momento adecuado, ayudaremos a los estudiantes a presentan una hoja de vida impactante y preparar para su experiencia de entrevista,” dice Hanson.

ancianos LOS ESTAFADORES BUSCANDO VÍCTIMAS DE LA TERCERA EDAD Ser víctimas de un estafador es algo perjudicial especialmente para las personas de la tercera edad porque son vulnerables. Muchas personas de la tercera edad son muy propensos a ser víctimas de un fraude y también tienden a no reportarlo.

Al avanzar los años las personas mayores sufren perdida de la memoria y esto les limita la posibilidad de hacer un reporte detallado cuando son víctimas de un fraude. Algunas personas han sido víctimas de un fraude en su vida, por ejemplo; alto costos de seguros, anticipación de gastos innecesarios para funeral, o vendedores telefónicos ofreciendo ofertas de productos, etc...

Muchas personas también no saben dónde reportar un fraude o no se dan cuenta que han sido víctimas de estafadores hasta que comentan su situación con un familiar o amigo/a. Es muy preocupante cuando no se tiene apoyo de alguien quien ayude en estas situaciones.

El Centro Intercultural Para Mayores ofrece varios programas y educación ayudando a prevenir que las personas de la tercera edad se conviertan en víctimas de fraudes.

e welcome students from all world religions and from across the nation. We offer affordable degree programs across a wide spectrum of today’s leading fields such as nursing, occupational therapy, physician assistant studies, teaching with specialties, teaching for career changers, business with an emphasis on analytics and strategic communication, legal studies and more,” says Sara Hanson, College of Saint Mary (CSM) Vice-President for Enrollment Services. Hanson points out that area students looking to select a college should consider CSM because they offer a solid liberal arts education foundation for all majors offered.

Female students looking for a place to continue their higher education might also be unsure of which field of study to pursue. CSM offers more than 30 undergraduate programs and seven graduate degree programs and the necessary resources to help students find their calling. In fact, Hanson says “College of Saint Mary faculty work side-by-side with students, encouraging and challenging them to discover their true potential and achieve academic excellence. Our student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1 allows for small classes and oneon-one attention.”

The health field is booming one around the country and CSM offers a three-year and four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Additionally, the institution offers a five-year Master’s in Occupational Therapy

that helps student complete field-work at some of the nation’s top healthcare facilities.

Hanson adds that CSM also offers competitive business analytics and strategic communication majors that blend classic business curriculum with innovative course work and hands-on experience. “Working with the region’s leading business employers, CSM designed the program to be unique in the Midwest, offering the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in today’s information-rich society,” says Hanson.

CSM not only partners with area for-profit business to ensure their students get the best hands on experience, they also partner with local educational institutions. CMS has partnered with Creighton University School of Law on an accelerated law degree. Students enrolling in this program have the ability to shave a year off of their bachelor’s degree.

Hanson points out that in this 3+3 program students spend their first three years of undergraduate studies at CSM and during their junior year they take the LSAT and apply for admission to Creighton Law. “Once accepted, their fourth year of undergraduate studies becomes their first year of law school at Creighton. All credits earned during that first year of law school are applied to the student’s undergraduate degree at CSM,” says Hanson.

If none of these popular fields of study appeal to students interested in attending CSM Hanson says that students can enter CSM in General Studies or as an Undecided student.

ordinator can help students discover their career path through a variety of methods.

Paying for college is another component that students have to consider when applying to colleges and universities. Hanson says that CSM offers a large number of scholarships and grants to help women pay for their tuition at CSM. The Academic Achievement Scholarship at CSM is a popular scholarship that ranges from $7,000$16,0000 per year. This scholarship is based on a student’s high school GPA and ACT or SAT score. Students with financial need can apply to a variety of other scholarships that include the Catherine McAuley Grant, Marie Curie Scholarship and others.

CSM offers many resources for incoming students but they make sure to prepare students on their way out of CSM. Students searching for job opportunities post CSM can connect with the Career Services Coordinator to review their resumes, build skills in workshops, look at job listings and a variety of other services. “Our Career Services will help students discover their career path and when the time is right, we will help students present an impactful resume’ and prepare for their interview experience,” says Hanson.

“CSM is a place where students have the opportunity to explore their passions and discover new ones through curricular and co-curricular activities,” concludes Hanson

“Nosotros tenemos un catálogo particular al que yo llamo, ‘la Biblia de los dolores’, que se refiere a ésos problemas, porque desafortunadamente el dolor al que nos enfrentamos en la clínica, no es el dolor que acaba de surgir, sino que se trata de un dolor ya consolidado”, dijo González.

Al respecto Bravo agregó que lo más común hoy en día es que los clientes acudan a consulta a Teide “con mucho dolor en el nervio ciático, con reflejos en el piramidal”, y buscando una cura desesperada a su “fascitis plantar, bursitis y tendonitis”.

Estos padecimientos, según señaló Bravo, afectan principalmente a hombres y mujeres, que son empleados de compañías como las procesadoras de carne, donde las tareas son pesadas y los movimientos para llevarlas a cabo son repetitivos, sin descanso y en general en ambientes poco favorables para la salud (como los cuartos con temperaturas extremas), por lo que ella recomienda “hacer todo lo posible por atenderse a tiempo en cuanto comienza alguna molestia”, y comprender que “ningún dolor crónico se va a quitar en una sesión, ya que al contrario, se necesitan por lo menos tres sesio-

nes seguidas”, así como mucha disciplina, para iniciar la recuperación.

Bravo se ha quedado a cargo completamente de Teide, la clínica que con tanto cariño y esmero abrió González, porque el querido terapista se encuentra convaleciente por cuestiones de salud. Su situación es delicada, pero su fe “sigue en pie” como hace años, cuando además de sus padecimientos cardiacos, le diagnosticaron cáncer y logró vencerlo.

Y aunque el terapista extraña sus sesiones, se encuentra tranquilo de poder ofrecer los mismos servicios a través de su propia familia: “Irina no es mi nuera, es mi hija. Ella ha sido un apoyo total en el trabajo y también en la casa.

Ahora que ella está en la clínica te puedo decir que me siento realizado, ¡estoy contento!”.

acía tiempo que gente cercana al reflexólogo y masajista, Jesús Eliseo González le preguntaba sobre la posibilidad de compartirle sus experiencias a otra persona. Y aunque fueron muchos quienes se acercaron a él para recibir entrenamiento, no hubo quien verdaderamente deseara seguir su profesión: “Porque lo hacían con la idea de que fuera un negocio y eso no correspondía con la filosofía que yo tengo”.

Así que González siguió cuidando escrupulosamente de sus pacientes, hasta que un día se dio cuenta de que su nuera, Irina Bravo, reunía las cualidades necesarias para transmitirle todos sus conocimientos: “A Irina, le interesa más quitar el dolor, que el beneficio económico. Ella tiene lo que se llama ‘el don’, que hace años mi maestra también vio en mi”.

Al igual que su suegro, Bravo también está certificada por la Escuela Internacional de Naturopatía (en Granada, España) y atiende en Teide, el centro fundado hace años por González, a donde acuden inmigrantes hispanos buscando alivio a dolencias físicas ocasionadas principalmente por largas y pesadas jornadas laborales.

El Programa de Servicio de Comida en el Verano del Distrito Escolar de Omaha, OPS, comenzó el primero de junio. Este programa ofrece desayunos y almuerzos gratuitos para niños y jóvenes de 1 a 18 años de edad en las escuelas designadas en Omaha. Nueva Atención a Altos Índices de Lesiones en las Plantas Empacadoras Por años, estudio tras estudio ha documentado continuamente los altos índices de lesiones de discapacidad en los trabajadores de plantas empacadoras de carne y aves. Un nuevo reporte publicado el 25 de mayo por la Oficina Gubernamental de Responsabilidad, GAO por sus siglas en inglés, reveló que estas lesiones siguen ocurriendo por toda la nación pero las plantas regularmente omiten los reportes de lesiones y amenazan a los trabajadores con quitarles su trabajo solo por solicitar tratamiento.

GAO publicó el reporte “Se Requiere de Datos Adicionales para Abordar los Peligros Continuos en la Industria Avícola” donde dio resultados que confirman estos datos ya bien conocidos.

Once años antes del primer reporte de GAO sobre los peligros en la industria cárnica y avícola, el reporte mas reciente de GAO claramente demuestra que los trabajadores continúan enfrentando condiciones peligrosas que los ponen en riesgo de recibir lesiones permanentes.

Las lesiones de discapacidad a causa de movimientos repetitivos, exposiciones a sustancias químicas y patógenos, y lesiones traumáticas que llevan a amputaciones son el resultado de ambientes peligrosos de trabajo que los trabajadores de cárnicos y avícolas enfrentan cada día.

El reporte también encontró que los altos índices de lesiones documentados por varias organizaciones dicen que no todas las lesiones son reportadas porque las compañías presionan y amenazan a los trabajadores quienes quieren reportar una lesión.

This program offers free breakfast and lunch for children ages 1 to18 at designated school locations. Bravo is now completely in charge of Teide, the clinic that with so much love and effort Gonzalez opened because the esteemed therapist is currently recuperating from illness.

His situation is delicate, but his faith is “still just as strong” as several years ago when on top of his heart disease he was diagnosed with cancer – which he managed to beat.

And even though he misses sessions, he feels at ease about being able to offer the same services as always from someone in his family: “Irina is not only my daughterin-law, she is my daughter. She has been very supportive at work and home. Now that she’s at the clinic I can say that I feel fulfilled, and very happy!”

New Attention to High Injury Rates in Meat and Poultry Plants For years, study after study has continued to document workers’ high rates of crippling injuries in meatpacking and poultry plants. A new report released on May 25 by the Government Accountability Office revealed not only are these injuries still occurring nationwide but plants regularly suppress injury reporting and threaten workers with job loss just for seeking treatment.

For more than a decade, medical studies and reports have proven that workers in meatpacking and poultry plants face dangerous, systemic risks that result in alarming rates of severe and crippling repetitive motion injuries and abusive work environments.

The GAO report “Additional Data Needed to Address Continue Hazards in the Poultry Industry” gave added confirmation to this well-known data.

Eleven years after the GAO’s first report on the dangers of the meat and poultry industry, the GAO’s most recent report clearly demonstrates that workers continue to face perilous conditions that put them at great risk of permanent and debilitating injuries.

Crippling repetitive motion injuries, exposure to harmful chemicals and pathogens, and traumatic injuries that lead to amputations are all the results of a dangerous work environment that meat and poultry workers must confront every day.

The report also found that the high rates of injury documented by many organizations are significantly underreported because companies pressure and threaten workers who want to report an injury. For a complete copy of the report go to www.gao.govGAO-16-337.

or a long time, people would approach reflexologist and masseur Jesus Eliseo Gonzalez and asked him about the possibility of sharing his expertise with another person. And even though many tried to be trained by him, none of them actually wanted to continue his legacy: “They were doing it for the money, and that is not the philosophy I have.”

So Gonzalez continued taking great care of his patients until one day he realized that Irina Bravo, his daugther-in-law, had all the skills and qualities needed for him to share his knowledge: “Irina cares more about reducing and removing gain than about making money. She has what we call ‘the gift’ that my teacher saw in me many years ago.”

Just like her father-in-law, Bravo is also certified by the Escuela Internacional de Naturopatia (in Granada, Spain), and she offers her services at Teide, the center founded by Gonzalez many years ago, where Latino immigrants visit seeking a

way to relieve them of the physical pain suffered from long and hard work days.

“We have a catalog that I like to call ‘the Bible of pain,’ which talks about these issues because, unfortunately, the pain we deal with in the clinic is not a pain that has just showed up, it is pain that has been accumulating for a while,” said Gonzalez.

Bravo added that nowadays it is very common for clients to come to Teide “with a lot of pain in their sciatic nerve, with referred pain to their pyramidal,” desperately seeking a cure for their “plantar fasciitis, bursitis, and tendonitis.”

Said pain, according to Bravo, mainly affects women and men who work at meatpacking plants where work is hard and they must execute many repetitive motions without rest and in areas that are generally not good for their health (such as rooms with very high temperatures), which is why she recommends people to “do everything they can to be treated as soon as they feel some pain,” and that people must understand that “no chronic pain will be removed in a single session, and that at least three consecutive sessions are required,” along with plenty of discipline in order to start the healing process.
