con la finalidad de permitir que los niños del P.A.C.E. puedan conocer y convivir de cerca con los jugadores, a quienes incluso esto les serviría para relajarse, previo a los juegos oficiales.

Así, más de 80 inquietos niños disfrutaron sus alimentos, bajo supervición de directivos y voluntarios del grupo P.A.C.E., quienes posteriormente los acompañaron al centro del estadio para gritar “play ball” y comenzar así un juego rápido que permitió lanzadas y batazos entre las promesas universitarias y los pequeños, quienes no dudaron en sacar diversos objetos para ser autografiados.

Posteriormente, los niños salieron junto a los beisbolistas rumbo al TD Ameritrade Park, donde harían una valla para ser los primeros en darles la bienvenida oficial durante la ceremonia oficial de inauguración.

“Esta ha sido una oportunidad única que muchos padres no imaginaron que sus hijos podrían vivir”, dijo Kathy Belcastro, capitán del recinto sureste del Departamento de policía, quien se mostraba emocionada al subrayar que las actividades del grupo P.A.C.E. son una manera efectiva de hacer algo positivo con los niños, antes de que se metan en problemas con la ley, siendo adultos.

En este sentido, en capitán de policía Richard Gonzalez, dijo que el P.A.C.E. se creó en el 2005, por miembros de la Asociación de

inalmente, se inauguró la Serie mundial Universitaria de Beisball (CWS - College World Series).

Y mientras miles de personas provenientes de todo el país se divertían en el nuevo Festival para Fanáticos, afuera del CenturyLink Center o buscaban un lugar en el interior del TD Ameritrade Park para el evento inaugural, un selecto grupo de niños vivieron una experiencia VIP, que les dió una convivencia de primera mano con todas las estrellas invitadas al evento.

Se trató de un acceso único y selecto a los pequeños que forman parte del programa de Atletismo Policial para un Compromiso Comunitario (P.A.C.E. Police Athletics for Community Engagement); un proyecto que de forma gratuita trabaja en Omaha.

Esta fue la primera vez que la directiva del CWS aceptaron que un grupo de niños conviviera tan cercanamente con los jugadores de los equipos contendientes.

Así, mientras las multitudes abarrotaban el estadio cede, a unos metros de ahí, en el interior del estadio Morrison de la universidad de Creighton, se realizaba la barbacoa tradicional de bienvenida que se ofrece a jugadores, entrenadores y directivos, en la cual se designó un palco privado a los pequeños invitados.

LOGRAN UN SUEÑO EN LA CWS

Oficiales Latinos de Paz en Omaha (Omaha Latino Peace Officers Association) y la Liga Atlética de Policía (Police Athletic League), para prevenir que los niños de la ciudad se involucren en pandillas, delincuencia o consumo de drogas.

La dinámica es simple: Recibir gratuitamente a todos los niños interesados, para involucrarlos en deportes como el béisbol y el fútbol, que permitan proporcionarles una oportunidad para desarrollar disciplina, autoestima y valores morales positivos a través de competencias deportivas saludables.

Antonio (Tony) Espejo, fundador de P.A.C.E., maneja la siguiente teoría: “Si logramos hacer que los niños jueguen juntos a los 11 años, entonces resultará difícil para ellos tener que dispararse el uno al otro a los 16 años”.

Así, con esta idea bien adoptada, comenzaron a trabajar exitosamente con 60 niños, logrado que en este 2016 se estime la participación de 2,000 miembros, entre los 8 y 18 años.

Cabe subrayar que las ligas deportivas son entrenadas por oficiales voluntarios, lo cual permite establecer una conexión positiva entre la comunidad y sus agentes de policía.

De acuerdo evaluaciones del capitán Richard Gonzalez, se han logrado reducir el reclutamiento y actividad de las pandillas que operan en Omaha. También dijo que

POR BERNARDO MONTOYA próximamente se llevará a cabo un estudio social por parte de una universidad local, para medir de forma clara los alcances positivos que socialmente se han alcanzado con el programa P.A.C.E. Hay que enfatizar que este tipo de de proyecto no pide cuotas de registro o el gasto de uniformes reglamentarios. Únicamente piden que los chicos asistan con ganas de jugar y de mantenerse alejados de los problemas.

De esta forma, el ciclo queda completo al estar inculcándoles el amor a un deporte que posteriormente les abre las puertas para presentarlos con figuras del deporte universitario, quienes les reiteran visión de llevar una vida sana y alejada de los problemas, lo cual tiene sus recompensas, como el hecho de haber sido tratados como estrellas en un evento de trascendencia nacional como la CWS. Previo a concluir la tarde, y mientras los pequeños seguían entusiasmados por lo ocurrido, Tony Espejo y Richard Gonzalez concluyeron lanzando un mensaje comunitario en búsqueda de patrocinadores al programa P.A.C.E., el cual requiere fondos económicos para continuar su misión de utilizar el atletismo como remedio anti pandillas, logrando así que Omaha sea un mejor lugar para la niñez.

The kids later joined the baseball players and made their way to the TD Ameritrade Park, where the kids would form a welcoming corridor to be the first to officially welcome them to the inauguration ceremony.

“This has been a unique opportunity that many parents never imagined their kids could experience,” said Kathy Belcastro, Captain of the Southeast Precinct of the Omaha Police Department, who was happy to highlight how the many activities of the P.A.C.E. group were an effective way of doing something positive for the kids before they get into trouble with the law as adults.

Police Captain Richard Gonzalez said that P.A.C.E. was created back in 2005 by members of the Omaha Latino Peace Officers Association and Police Athletic League to prevent kids from going into gangs, becoming criminals or consuming drugs.

The dynamic is very simple: receive all interested kids for free to get them involved in sports such as baseball and football in order to give them a chance to develop discipline, self-esteem, and positive moral values through healthy competition.

P.A.C.E. founder Antonio (Tony) Espejo has the following theory: “If we manage to get kids to play together when they are 11 years old, then there are fewer odds of then shooting at each other when they’re 16 years old.”

With this idea in place, they started to successfully work with 60 kids. For 2016 it is estimated that over 2,000 members between the ages of 8 and 18 years of age participated.

We must mention that the sports leagues are coached by volunteer officers, and this allows them to establish a positive bond between the community and their police officers.

According to the evaluations of Captain Richard Gonzalez, gang recruitment and their activities in Omaha have indeed been reduced. He also said that a social study from a local university will soon take place and that it will try to clearly measure the positive impact on society thanks to the P.A.C.E. program.

It must be said that for this type of project there is no registration fee nor any cost for uniforms. All that is asked is that kids arrive with a passion to play and to stay away from trouble.

And this way the cycle is completed by instilling a love for a sport that will later open its doors to introduce them to some of the stars of college baseball who will reaffirm how they should lead a healthy life away from trouble, which has its own rewards, such as the fact they were treated like stars at a national level event, as is the case of the CWS. Before the evening was over, and while the little ones were still highly enthusiastic about what had just happened, Tony Espejo and Richard Gonzalez mentioned that the P.A.C.E. program is looking for sponsors that can help provide the funding needed to continue the mission of using sports as an anti-gang remedy, making Omaha a better place for kids.

he College World Series (CWS) has finally started! As thousands from all over the country had fun at the Fan Festival outside the CenturyLink Center or looked for a place inside the TD Ameritrade Park for the opening event, a select group of kids got the VIP experience, having a chance to hang out with all the star guests at the event.

It was thanks to a unique and exclusive access for the little ones who are part of the Police Athletics for Community Engagement P.A.C.E) program, a free project that works in Omaha.

This was the first time the board of the CWS accepted that a group of kids could hang out with the players of the competing teams.

As the crowds packed the venue, a welcome barbecue was taking place inside of Morrison Stadium at Creighton University for all players, coaches, and executives where a private box was reserved for the little guests.

Jack Diesing Jr., president of the CWS, said that this would be a new tradition at the event so that they can allow P.A.C.E children to get to know and hang out with the players so that they could also relax a bit before the official games.

uchos de nuestros estudiantes trabajan junto a la facultad en investigación y experiencias creativas, prácticas, actuacion, y la realización y publicación de investigaciones únicas,” dice la Vicerrector Adjunta de Comunicaciones y Relaciones Con la Comunidad en la Universidad de Nebraska en Kearney (UNK), Kelly Bartling, añadiendo “los estudiantes de todos los niveles pueden prosperar debido a la atención individual de la facultad, y la oportunidad de trabajar con sus compañeros.” De Hecho, UNK tiene una proporción de estudiantes a facultad de 18.9 a 1. La institución educacional ofrece 120 carreras de pregrado, 22 programas pre-profesionales, y 27 programas pos-grado para los estudiantes.

Bartling menciona que la “Diferencia UNK” es ofrecer el acceso y la asequibilidad. “Muchos de nuestros estudiantes son los primeros en sus familias que van al colegio,” dice de Bartling, agregando “aquí los estudiantes pueden tener éxito, a un precio que es un valor para ellos.”

Otra beca popular de UNK es el programa Kearney Bound Scholars. “Estudiantes de primer año de la escuela secundaria de Kearney, North Platte y Lexington son seleccionados por su potencial académico y su necesidad financiera, y son asesorados por nosotros y sus escuelas secundarias para entrar UNK listos para tener éxito - y con poca obligación financiera,” dice de Bartling. Si los estudiantes no son elegibles para estos dos programas Bartling dice que UNK recibe el apoyo de ex alumnos exitosos y donantes y muchas otras oportunidades están disponibles. “Usted no sabe lo que está allí hasta que busca,” dice ella.

Una vez que los estudiantes encuentran una manera de pagar la escuela algunos estudiantes se enfrentan al reto de la selección de un campo de carrera. La Oficina Académica y Servicios Profesionales de UNK ayuda a estos estudiantes a evaluar sus habilidades, capacidades e intereses. En algunos casos conectan a los estudiantes con trabajo de medio tiempo para que puedan obtener una experiencia práctica y tratar un campo de estudio en persona. Además de conectar a los estudiantes con futuros empleadores UNK también ofrecen una variedad de otros recursos que incluyen la evaluación de carreras profesionales, ferias de la carrera, el Programa Conexiones de Carrera, entre otros.

Bartling dice que, históricamente, UNK ha sido conocido como una universidad de maestros y ofrecen un programa de formación docente fuerte. Sin embargo, también tienen una gran cantidad de estudiantes de ciencia premédicos o de salud con especialidades en biología, pschuobiology, y pre-salud que desean convertirse en entrenadores de atletismo, enfermeros, médicos y técnicos de laboratorio.

Si a los estudiantes no les gustan estos campos de carrera UNK también ofrece un programa de administración de empresas que tiene éxito.

Bartling añade que también tienen programas fuertes en la comunicación visual y la tecnología industrial, incluida la gestión de la cadena de suministro y distribución industrial.

UNK no solamente ofrece un entorno académico grande para los estudiantes, sino que también ofrecen muchas oportunidades sociales que puedan atraer a los estudiantes. “En lo social, tienen una comunidad activa griega, y un montón de clubes y organizaciones para que los estudiantes formen parte del servicio y aprendizaje,” dice de Bartling. Ella añade que este mes de abril más de 400 estudiantes se reunieron para participar en el gran evento, un evento de servicio dedicado a ayudar a la comunidad Kearney. Bartling también añade “tenemos numerosas actividades de fin de semana para mantener a los estudiantes ocupados y para que se diviertan, y tenemos un nuevo centro de bienestar con una pared de escalada y un montón de espacio para cintas de correr, pesas y clases de salud en grupo.”

En última instancia, Bartling señala que hay muchos factores que marcan la Universidad de Nebraska en Kearney aparte de otras instituciones educativas en Nebraska. “UNK tiene la experiencia de una universidad de artes liberales más pequeño. Nos gusta pensar en ello como una experiencia de la universidad privada en una importante universidad regional. Nos centramos en la experiencia del estudiante y el aprendizaje práctico,” dice de Bartling.

Help for Starting a Small Business The Midland Latino Community Development Corporation, MLCDC, will start their classes and technical assistance to develop successful and sustained market-responsive businesses. Classes are provided include the tools needed to start a licensed business.

Also, for Individuals wishing to apply for a loan or increase the size of their businesses, MLCDC offers a six-week intensive training on how to increase the size of a business and develop a business plan. Those with a viable business plan continue with one-on-one technical assistance to implement the plan.

Preparing a Business Plan and How to Start a Licensed Business Programs will be offered at the MLCDC’s offices on Saturdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., from July 9 to August 20, 2016.

any of our students work alongside faculty in research and creative experiences, in internships, performances, conducting and publishing unique research,” says University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK) Assistant Vice Chancellor for Communications and Community Relations, Kelly Bartling, adding “students of all abilities can thrive because of the individual attention the receive from faculty and opportunities to work with their peers.” UNK, which has a 18.9 to 1 student to faculty ratio, offers 120 undergraduate majors, 22 pre-professional programs, and 27 graduate programs for students.

Bartling mentions that the “UNK Difference” is to offer access and affordability. “Many of our students are the first in their families to have attended college,” says Bartling, adding “Here, students can be successful at a price that is a value for them.” UNK offers many resources for students that might not be able to afford college expenses without some sort of help. Bartling says that most of the students at UNK receive some type of financial aid, either need-based or academic-based. The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation sponsors the Thompson Scholars Learning Community at UNK. This scholarship provides first-generation college students with resources to cover tuition and books. In addition to the funds for these expenses the Thompson Learning Community also offers academic support so students can achieve academic success.

Another popular scholarship at UNK is the Kearney Bound Scholars. “High school freshmen from Kearney, North Platte and Lexington are selected for their academic promise and their financial need, and are mentored by us and their high schools to enter UNK ready to succeed — and with little financial obligation,” says Bartling. If students are not eligible for these two programs Bartling says that UNK received support from successful alumni and donors and many other opportunities are available. “You don’t know what’s there until you look,” she says.

Once students find a way to pay for school some face the challenge of selecting a career field. UNK’s Academic and Career Services office helps these students assess their skills, abilities, and interests. In some cases they connect students with part-time work so they can get a hands-on experience and try a field of study out first hand. In addition to linking students to future employers they also offer a variety of other resources that include the Career Assessment, Career Fairs, the Career Connections Programs, among others.

Bartling says that, historically, UNK has been known as a teacher college and they offer a strong teacher education program.

However, they also have a lot of pre-medical or health science majors in biology and prehealth majors that want to become athletic trainers, nurses, doctors and lab technicians.

their calling UNK also offers a successful business administration program. Bartling adds that they also have strong programs in visual communication and industrial technology, including supply chain management and industrial distribution.

UNK does not only offer a big academic environment for students, they also offer many social opportunities that might attract students. “Socially, we have an active greek community, and lots of clubs and organizations for students to be part of for service and learning,” says Bartling. She adds that this April more than 400 students came together to participate in the Big Event, a service event dedicated to helping the Kearney community. Bartling adds “we have numerous weekend activities to keep students busy and having fun, and a new Wellness Center with a rock-climbing wall and tons of space for treadmills, weights and group fitness classes.”

LCM Looking for a Bilingual Literacy Instructor The Latino Center of the Midlands, LCM, provides basic, foundational instruction to the adult learner so that they are able to connect to other institutions of higher learning and thrive. uenan las sentidas canciones de la inconfundible Chavela Vargas mientras Israel Treviño se concentra en el maquillaje de una linda modelo de Quinceañera Magazine Expo 2016.

La adolescente no la conoce, pero escucha divertida lo que el estilista dice sobre la desaparecida intérprete, mientras él diseña detalladamente su imagen para salir al escenario: “Su música me fascina”.

Israel Treviño es Eevee, la majestuosa Miss Gay Sur de Omaha 2015, de genuina sonrisa y preciosos ojos grandes: “Lo mejor de ser Eevee es que sigo siendo yo, ¡pero sin límites!”.

El nombre artístico nació de los sonidos que pronunciaba su hermanita intentando llamarle por su nombre, y se transformó en un esplendoroso personaje, basado en su propia madre: “Mi mamá es una señora que no sale ni a Walmart sin sus pestañas postizas y su maquillaje”.

Después, Eevee se empapó de la influencia de famosas mujeres mexicanas como la cantautora oaxaqueña Lila Downs y la controversial pintora Frida Kahlo, de quien admira que “le valía lo que la gente dijera” pues se arreglaba para gustarse a sí misma, alejada de modas y sin que sus padecimientos la limitaran, celebrando su existencia mediante imágenes, como ella: “Antes de ‘salir del clóset’ comencé a pintar, porque no podía hablar con mis amigos de ello por miedo o por mi religión”.

Inmersa en el arte, Eevee se sintió segura: “Mediante mis obras empecé a dejarle saber a la gente que era gay, y en ellas también mostraba mi herencia mexicana”.

Con tres hermanas y dos hermanos, Eevee creció unida a su mamá quien como pilar del hogar trabajó con ahínco sacándolos adelante: “Nos amamos, siempre fuimos como amigos, pero siento que por sus creencias al principio le fue difícil aceptarme. Pero un día finalmente se dio cuenta de que amaba más a sus hijos que a la iglesia, y ahora es mi mayor admiradora”.

La madre de Eevee es ésa “voz interna” que constantemente la impulsa a dar lo mejor de sí, recordándole que como artista drag queen, cuando se presente en un espectáculo, “siempre lo haga con mucho respeto y con mucho amor”.

Para Eevee obtener el título de Miss Gay Sur de Omaha 2015 fue en parte, “un shock”, porque no era muy conocida en esta ciudad, pero su impactante presencia, coquetería e innegable carisma, conquistaron a la audiencia: “No sabía muy bien lo que era el concurso ni las puertas que me iba a abrir, pero me preparé, comencé a asistir a los ensayos y a observar cómo se maquillaban los demás participantes, lo cual se me facilitó demasiado gracias a mi profesión, y me esforcé en ganar para demostrarle al mundo que la gente gay somos como ustedes”.

Ahora que la reconocen en clubs como The Alley en Lincoln, Eevee está “compro-

metida a llevar con orgullo mi corona gay latina a la comunidad americana porque ellos no conocían realmente sobre nosotros, y sé que puedo empujar a mi gente, a mi comunidad gay latina, ya que existimos y somos iguales que todos”.

Por eso cuando el club The Max la invitó a una celebración solicitándole que asistiera “como diva”, Eevee primero pensó en La Doña, la imponente actriz María Félix, pero para sorpresa de los asistentes, llegó instalada en la enigmática figura de La Catrina: “Porque cada que pienso en glamour y hermosura, mi mente se va para allá, para mí México”.

Más auténtica que nunca, imponiendo sus propias tendencias, Eevee vive lo que llama “mi verdad”, esforzándose por ser un ejemplo para las futuras generaciones.

Ya he cuando la multifacética Eevee no estuvo segura de sus diferencias, buscó la compañía de personas con una mente más abierta: “No por qué quería que compusieran mi vida, sino que me escucharan”.

Así que hoy, a sus 31 años, es un gran apoyo para muchos jóvenes que necesitan a alguien en quien apoyarse al no poder expresar sus preferencias sexuales en casa: “No te hagas daño y no le hagas daño a nadie, es mi primer consejo”.

Para Eevee la tormenta ya pasó, “quizás no a los 14 años, sino más grande”, pero actualmente el recibir de su madre los mejores halagos le asegura que todo valió la pena: “Ella me dice ‘te miras como yo cuando estaba joven’, y eso me encanta porque sé que ella puede ver lo bonito que hay en mi, lo que yo siempre quería que ella mirara”.

Existen muchos estereotipos con respecto al modo de vida de la comunidad gay, pero Eevee disfruta mucho de su hogar en Columbus: “Llego de trabajar y hago de cenar con mi pareja, vemos tele. A veces vamos al cine, salimos a bailar una vez al mes cuando tengo show, y me gusta estar con mi familia, hacer una carnita asada con mi mamá y llevar una vida tranquila”.

Una existencia llena de sueños como el comprar un local para establecer su estudio y una casa enorme donde pueda ver crecer a una niñita, son el motor de Eevee: “trabajo bastante porque quiero cosas buenas, no monetariamente, sino una vida bonita con mi pareja, una vida plena y hermosa. Para que cuando me vaya digan ‘esta persona vivió bien feliz’”.

he heartfelt songs of the unmistakable Chavela Vargas can be heard as Israel Treviño focuses on the makeup of the lovely model for the Quinceañera Magazine Expo 2016.

The teenager doesn’t know her, but she enjoys listening what the stylist has to say about the late artist and her music as he carefully designs her look for the stage.

Israel Treviño is Eevee, the regal Miss Gay South Omaha 2015, with a genuine smile and gorgeous large eyes: “The best thing about being Eevee is that I’m still me, but with no limits!”

Said artistic name was born from the sounds his little sister made when she tried to say his name, and it ended up transforming into a splendorous character based on his mother: “My mom is a woman who won’t even go to Walmart without her false eyelashes and her makeup on.”

On top of that, Eevee also introduced elements from famous Mexican women such as Oaxaca native singer/songwriter Lila Downs, as well as from controversial painter Frida Kahlo, from whom he admires how “she didn’t care at all about what people said” because she only cared about liking herself. She always stayed away from fashion and trends and without letting her illness limit her, always celebrating her existence through images: “Before I ‘came out of the closet’ I started to paint because I couldn’t talk to my friends about it because of fear or because of my religion.”

In art, Eevee felt secure: “It was through my art that I started to let people know that I was gay, as I paid homage to my Mexican heritage.” Along with three sisters and two brothers, Eevee grew up with a close relationship with their mother as the cornerstone of the family who worked extra hard to raise them: “We loved each other, and we were always like friends, but I feel that due to her beliefs she had a harder time accepting who I was. But one day she finally realized that she loved her kids more than she loved the church, and now she’s my biggest fan.”

Eevee’s mother is that “inner voice” that constantly pushes her to give it her all reminding her that, as a drag queen artist, whenever she performs at a show she must “always do so with a lot of love and respect.”

For Eevee, winning the 2015 Miss Gay South Omaha was “quite a surprise” because she wasn’t a well-known individual in this city, but her great presence and undeniable charisma captivated the audience: “At first I didn’t fully know what the contest was about or the doors it would open, but I prepared and started to show up at the rehearsals and watched as the other contestants applied their makeup, and this made things easier for me because of my profession. I worked very hard to win to show the world that gay people are just like everybody else.”

Now that she is recognized at clubs such as The Alley in Lincoln, Eevee is “committed to

proudly wear my Latino gay crown in front of the American community, because they really didn’t know about us, and I know I can help my people, my gay Latino community, because we are here, and we are equal to everyone else.”

This is why The Max club invited the celebrity and requested that she show up “as a diva.” Eevee first thought of going as La Doña - amazing and stunning actress Maria Felix - but for the surprise of the audience, she arrived as the enigmatic La Catrina: “Because every time I think of glamour and beauty, my mind goes there, to my Mexico.”

More authentic than ever and setting her own trends, Eevee likes what she calls “my truth,” working hard to be a role model for future generations.

When the multifaceted Eevee wasn’t sure about her differences, she went and looked for people who were more open-minded: “Not because I wanted them to fix my life, but because I wanted them to listen.”

To today, 31 years of age, she is a great support for many young people who need to look up to someone since they can’t talk about their sexual preferences at home: “Don’t harm yourself and don’t harm others is my first advice.”

For Eevee, the storm passed “maybe not when I was 14, but when I was older.” Receiving the best compliments from her mother, she assures us it was all worth it: “She says to me ‘you look like me when I was younger,’ and I love that because I know she sees the pretty in me, which is all I wanted her to see in me.”

There are many stereotypes about the lifestyle of the gay community, but Eevee enjoys her life in Columbus: “I arrive from work and make diner with my partner and we watch TV. Sometimes we go to the movies, and we go out dancing once a month when I have a show. I also love spending time with my family, with a nice carne asada with my mother, just enjoying a quiet life.”

A life full of dreams such as buying a retail space to set up her own studio as well as a big house where she can see a little girl grow are what motivate Eevee: “I work hard because I want good things to happen, not money-wise but to have a rich and beautiful life with my partner. That way when I’m gone, they can say ‘she lived a happy life.’”

The wonderful Eevee will be returning her crown in August, but for now, she wants to join the people who want to support the victims of the recent massacre in Orlando.
