Nuevo Enlace con el Departamento de Bomberos POR BERNARDO MONTOYA

l departamento de bomberos de la ciudad de Omaha mostró preocupación al señalar que los últimos incendios que han ocurrido en la ciudad han sido en hogares latinos, mismos que pudieron haberse evitado. Lamentablemente, en la población civil sigue presente la falta de interés por aprender cómo prevenir un incendio que, en el peor de los casos, arrasa con vidas humanas.

Con este panorama y buscando un cambio, la alcaldesa de Omaha, Jean Stothert, junto con Mélanie Bates, capitán en el departamento de bomberos de Omaha, especializada en investigar y escriturar concesiones para el cuerpo de bomberos y para la preparación para emergencias, crearon un nuevo puesto de trabajo, dentro de la oficina de educación pública, para contar con un Especialista en Educación Publica bilingüe.

La persona seleccionada para ocupar dicho puesto fue Sergio Robles, reconocida figura en la comunidad latina por más de una década trabajando en radio-comunicación, y por ser miembro de diversas campañas y agencias altruistas.

De acuerdo con Robles, Omaha es un lugar muy seguro en cuanto a incendios se refiere. Sin embargo, no ha logrado llegar a la meta de ser una ciudad con “cero incendios”.

De hecho, el departamento de bomberos calcula que en la ciudad el 20 por ciento de los hogares no cuentan con un detector de humo eficiente y esto los hace peligrosamente frágiles a sucumbir en incendio.

El proyecto laboral de Sergio Robles le pone también a trabajar con todo tipo de organizaciones, escuelas, empresas y/o grupos que ofrezcan servicios a la comunidad, a fin de garantizar que son un lugar seguro y capacitado para saber que hacer cuando hay fuego.

“En algunos de los últimos siniestros en hogares latinos hubo perdida de vidas por que no se tenía un detector de humos que les alertara”, enfatizó Sergio y agrego: “Cuando me reúno con la gente trato de utilizar los ejemplos del pasado para sensibilizarlos y hacerles entender la importancia de la prevención y contar con un detector de humo y monóxido de carbono eficiente”.

Señalo que “si usted no tiene un detector de humo en su casa o apartamento, y no puede comprar o no puede instalar uno, el cuerpo de bomberos de Omaha suministrará e instalará el detector en su casa. Este es un servicio totalmente gratis.

Sergio hizo también una invitación para que las familias de Omaha se acerquen y conozcan más a los bomberos de su localidad.

En este sentido, un estudio publicado en el NewYork Times, indicó que casi todos los Hispanos viviendo en los EE.UU. (98 por ciento) consideran que los bomberos son importantes para la seguridad de su comunidad, Asimismo, el 99 por ciento de los adultos de la población general cree que los bomberos son importantes para la seguridad comunitaria.

Sin embargo, solo el 36 por ciento supo todas las funciones que realiza un bombero.

Robles dijo que “los bomberos están activos las 24 horas del día y también responden a cuestiones de investigación, rescate y salud, haciendo un trabajo heroico”.

Cabe hacer mención que recientemente la excelencia en el desempeño médico del cuerpo de bomberos en Omaha fue distinguida con el Premio de Plata EMS en Línea de Supervivencia por parte de la Asociación Americana del Corazón, quien reconoce a nivel nacional a las dependencias que realizan los mejores esfuerzos para mejorar la calidad de la atención a pacientes de ataque cardiaco.

Ahora bien, Sergio Robles estará también realizando campañas para promover que más jóvenes latinos se vinculen a este organismo.

Dijo que “una carrera con el cuerpo de bomberos de Omaha proporciona interesantes desafíos que generan buena remuneración económica y beneficios. Es una profesión respetada que enseña técnicas en extinciones de incendios, operaciones de búsqueda y rescate, servicios médicos de emergencia, así como muchas áreas especializadas de investigación, entrenamiento y supervisión”.

El jefe interino del departamento de bomberos, Dan Olsen, expuso que la misión de dicha dependencia es “proteger la vida, la propiedad y el medioambiente de nuestra comunidad a través de la prevención y protección eficaz y cortes”.

Resalto que “los miembros de nuestro departamento tienen una postura con un alto nivel ético, de integridad, profesionalismo y compasión, presentes en cada decisión que tomamos”.

Por su parte, Robles agregó que los jóvenes latinos deberían probar iniciar una carrera en El Departamento de Bomberos de Omaha.

Señalo que actualmente el departamento cuenta con aproximadamente 650 bomberos y muy pocos hablan español. Y si consideramos que la población latina sigue en aumento, entenderemos la importancia de vincular personal bilingüe.

Ahora bien, Omaha cuenta solo con 33 mujeres bomberos. De ahí que se entienda también la invitación a las mujeres, quienes son bienvenidas a vincularse y trabajar en beneficio de su comunidad.

Las personas interesadas en vincularse pueden contactar directamente a Robles o visitar la estación. Esta última es una manera muy didáctica de conocerles y convivir con ellos.

Incluso las puertas de la estación de bomberos están abiertas para hacer visitas en familia o con amigos. Solo deben programarse con 1 o 2 semanas de anticipación.

De esta forma, la ciudad de Omaha y el departamento de bomberos está confiando en el trabajo de Sergio Robles para lograr cambiar las estadísticas que apuntan una necesidad por contar con una población civil mejor preparada en términos de prevención de incendios, muy en especial en la minoría latina.

he Omaha fire department has shown some concern due to how the last set of fires in the city happened in Latino homes, fires that could have been avoided.

Unfortunately, the population shows a lack of interest in learning how to prevent a fire that, in the worst case scenario, can end human lives.

Because of this, and looking for a change, Mayor Jean Stothert, as well as Omaha Fire Department Captain Melanie Bates - specialized in researching and drafting grants for the fire department and for emergency preparations - have created a new job within the public education office so that they can have a Public Education Bilingual Specialist.

The person selected for this job is Sergio Robles, a renowned individual in the Latino community who for over a decade has worked in radio along with being part of many awareness campaigns and non-profits.

According to Robles, Omaha is a safe place regarding fires. However, the city has not been able to achieve a “zero fires” goal.

In fact, the fire department estimates that 20% of all homes in the city don’t have an efficient smoke detector, and this puts them in danger, making it more likely to succumb to a fire.

This project will allow Robles to work with the many organizations, schools, companies and groups that offer their services to the community to make sure they are safe locations that are qualified to act properly in case of a fire.

“In some of the last fires at Latino homes some people lost their lives because there was no smoke detector to alert them,” said Sergio. “When I meet with people I try to use examples from the past to show them how things can go very wrong and why it is important to understand preventing fires, and why a smoke and carbon monoxide detector is a must.”

He stated that “if you do not have a smoke detector in your house or apartment, and if you can’t buy one or can’t install it, the Omaha fire department will provide one and install it at your home. This is a completely free service.”

Sergio also invited Omaha families to come and meet the firemen of their city.

A study published in the New York Times stated

that almost all Latinos in the U.S. (98%) consider that firefighters are very important for the community’s safety. On that note, 99% of adults in the general population also believe that firefighters are very important for the community’s safety.

However, only 36% managed to name all the duties of a firefighter.

Robles said that “all firefighters are active 24/7 and also work on research, rescue and health, doing heroic work.”

We must highlight that the excellent medical work of the Omaha fire department was recently recognized with the Silver EMS Lifeline Award from the American Heart Association, who acknowledges organizations nationwide for their efforts for improving the quality of the care provided to patients who suffer from a heart attack.

Robles will be working on several campaigns to promote having more young Latinos join the organization.

“A career in the Omaha fire department provides a set of interesting challenges while providing good pay and great benefits. It is a respected profession that teaches the many techniques required to extinguish a fire, work on search and rescue missions, providing emergency medical services, as well in specialized areas for investigation, training and supervision.”

Dan Olsen, acting fire department chief, stated that the organization’s mission is “protecting all life, properties and the environment of our community through prevention and protection.”

He highlighted that “members in our department showcase a high level of ethics, integrity, professionalism and compassion that is present in every decision we make.”

Robles added that young Latinos should try having a career at the Omaha Fire Department.

He mentioned that the fire department currently has around 650 firefighters and that not many of them speak Spanish. Since the Latino population continues to grow, it is very important to have more staff members that are bilingual.

Omaha currently has 33 female firefighters, which is why more women are always welcomed to join their ranks so that they can work together to benefit the community.

Those who are interested in joining can directly contact Robles or visit the fire station.

People who visit can get to know the firefighters and learn a bit about what they do.

The doors at the fire station are open if people want to visit along with their friends or family.

All that is required is that said visit is scheduled one to two weeks before the day.

The city of Omaha and the fire department trust that the work of Sergio Robles will help to change the stats that show that the public must be better prepared to prevent fires, even more so in the Latino community.

SENTENCIA DEL TRIBUNAL SUPREMO SOBRE LA INMIGRACIÓN

a votación dividida 4-4 del Tribunal Supremo de los Estados Unidos en el caso Estados Unidos v . Texas la semana pasada significa que se les negará alivio de la deportación a más de cinco millones de inmigrantes se les negará el alivio de la deportación. El intento de reforma migratoria del presidente Obama serán puesto a un alto drástico.

“Es profundamente decepcionante aprender acerca de la decisión del Tribunal Supremo,” dice el Director Ejecutivo de Justicia para Nuestros Vecinos Nebraska, Emiliano Lerda.

“Todos perdemos en diferentes nivele, moralmente, perdemos culturalmente, perdemos de vista económica, incluso desde una perspectiva de seguridad la gente va a seguir viviendo en las sombras y con miedo por temor a ser deportados, esto no es una forma humana de vivir. Es un día muy triste,” dice el graduado de la Universidad de Derechos de Drake.

De acuerdo con Lerda más de 5 millones de personas que han tenido la oportunidad de solicitar DACA (Acción Diferido para Llegados en la Infancia) y DAPA (Accion Diferida Para los Padres de los Estadounidenses) ya no tendrán acceso a la oportunidad de solicitar un permiso de trabajo y vivir en los EE.UU. con permiso. “Esto no es ficción; esto es la vida real. Estas son personas reales con las familias, con niños, con primos que viven con nosotros

en nuestra comunidad y todos perdemos por la decisión de hoy,” dice Lerda.

Lerda dice que esta decisión debe recordar a todos lo importante que es votar y la importancia de las elecciones de noviembre. “Hay un juez del Tribunal Supremo que falta después de la muerte del juez Scalia,” dice Lerda, añadiendo “el que llega a ser el próximo presidente va a llegar a designar a ese juez.” Lerda dice que ese individuo afectará para siempre el futuro de este país.

“Espero que la decisión de hoy es una derrota temporal que conduzca una reacción significativa y la oportunidad de reflexionar y entender que hay que actuar, tenemos que votar para que el resultado a largo plazo sea una gran victoria para la humanidad y el futuro,” dice Lerda.

De acuerdo con Lerda el presidente debe ser capaz de determinar cómo las prioridades de control se establecen dentro de la rama ejecutiva y tendrá la autoridad para asegurarse de que sus políticas se observan en consecuencia.

Aunque la situación es frustrante Lerda mantiene la esperanza de que el presidente Obama continuará impulsando la reforma.

El sistema de inmigración en los Estados Unidos es uno roto y aunque el presidente Obama hizo un intento de suavizar sus efectos devastadores la gente todavía debe tomar un momento para involucrarse. De hecho, Lerda dice que su organización, Justicia para

Nuestros Vecinos Nebraska (JFON), tratará de hacer su parte para difundir la información sobre esta decisión. “La gente tiene que entender la realidad de nuestro sistema legal de inmigración y no todo el mundo entiende,” él dice.

JFON tiene previsto seguir fortaleciendo sus esfuerzos de alcance en la comunidad local a través de presentaciones, talleres y mediante la colaboración con otras organizaciones en la comunidad. “Cuanto más gente entienda las realidades de nuestro sistema más corazones y más mentes vamos a ganar porque lo que tenemos actualmente es verdaderamente injusto y verdaderamente no humano,” dice Lerda.

El sistema actual que no funciona no les a los inmigrantes la oportunidad de trabajar legalmente, pagar impuestos, y vivir en paz.

“Estamos empujando a los inmigrantes hacia las sombras. Esta política no está haciendo más seguro o más fuerte moralmente o económicamente a nuestro país, añade Lerda.

A pesar de que la decisión del Tribunal Supremo es una que afecta a millones de inmigrantes, Lerda señala que la decisión no afectará el programa regional DACA, que fue anunciado en 2012. El dice que las personas que califican para el programa regional deben solicitar su permiso de trabajo.

he United States Supreme Court’s 4-4 split vote on the case United States v. Texas last week means as many as five million immigrants will be denied deportation relief and President Obama’s attempt at immigration reform has been dealt a serious blow.

“It is deeply disappointing to learn about the Supreme Court decision,” says the Executive Director for Justice for Our Neighbors Nebraska, Emiliano Lerda. “We all lose on different levels; we morally, we lose culturally, we lose economically, even from a safety perspective people will continue to live in the shadows afraid of law enforcement for fear of being deported. This is not a humane way to live. It is a really sad day,” says the Drake University Law School graduate.

According to Lerda, over five million people that would have had the chance to apply for DACA (Differed Action for Childhood Arrivals) and DAPA (Deferred Action for Parents of Americans) will no longer have access to the opportunity to apply for a work permit and live in the U.S with permission. “This is not fiction; this is real life. These are real individuals with families, with children with cousins that live with us in our community and we all lose by today’s decision,” says Lerda.

Lerda says that this decision should remind everyone how important it is to vote and how important the November elections will be.

“There is one supreme court justice that is missing following the passing of Justice Scalia,” says Lerda, adding “whoever gets to be the next president will get to appoint that justice.” Lerda says that individual will forever affect the future of this country.

“I hope that the decision from today is a temporary defeat that hopefully will lead to a significant reaction and opportunity to reflect and understand that we need to act, we need to vote so that the long term result will be a major victory for humanity and the future,” says Lerda.

According to Lerda, from here the President should be able to determine how enforcement priorities are set within the executive branch and will have the authority to make sure that his policies are enforced accordingly. Although the situation is frustrating, Lerda remains hopeful that President Obama will continue to push for reform.

The immigration system in the United States is a broken one and although President Obama made an attempt to soften its devastating effects, people should still take a moment to get involved. In fact, Lerda says his organization, Justice for Our Neighbors Nebraska (JFON), will

try to do their part to spread the word about this decision. “People need to understand the reality of our broken immigration legal system and not everyone understands that,” he says.

JFON plans to continue to strengthen their outreach efforts in the local community through presentations, workshops and through collaborations with other organizations in the community. “The more that people understand the realities of our system the more hearts and the more minds we are going to win because what we currently have is truly unfair and truly not humane,” says Lerda.

The current broken system does not give people an opportunity to work legally, pay taxes, and live in peace. “We are currently pushing people into the shadows. It is not making us any safer or stronger morally or economically, adds Lerda.

Although the Supreme Court decision is one that affects millions of immigrants, Lerda points out that the decision will not affect the regional DACA program that was announced in 2012.

He says that people that qualify for the regional program should still apply for their work permit.

Como cocinera profesional Ellington diseña atractivos planes de comida, con la convicción de de que “el comer saludable no tiene que ser aburrido, puesto que no se trata únicamente de preparar ensaladas”.

Así que su meta es que cada alimento que se ingiera “tenga un sabor delicioso y sea fácil de digerir”, conforme al metabolismo de cada quien. “Basado en la forma en la que tu cuerpo metaboliza la comida para convertirla en energía, es que se van a tener diferentes regímenes alimenticios”, explicó Ellington quien aseguró tener un “metabolismo rápido”, debido al cual, si no se alimenta apropiadamente, llega a sufrir de la falta de sueño y por consiguiente, de cansancio.

La nutrición es el fundamento de la salud. Puedes tomar suplementos y hacer ejercicio, pero si tu nutrición no es adecuada, no verás cambios favorables en tu organismo”, dijo Latonya Ellington, fundadora de Fit4TheKingdom. La decisión en U.S. versus Texas deja intacta la decisión con fallas legales del Quinto Circuito de bloquear los programas del Presidente Obama de expandir la Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia, DACA+ y Acción Diferida para los Padres de Ciudadanos, DAPA. Unos de los programas, DACA, era una expansión del programa que beneficia a los individuos quienes fueron traídos ilegalmente al país por sus padres cuando eran infantes. SUPREME COURT DECISION LEAVES FAMILIES IN LEGAL LIMBO A short-handed, deadlocked Supreme Court has dealt a serious blow to President Barack Obama’s immigration plans. The decision in U.S. vs. Texas leaves intact the legally flawed Fifth Circuit decision blocking President Obama’s expanded Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals, DACA+ and Deferred Action For Parents of Americans, DAPA programs.

One of the initiatives, DACA, was an expansion of a program that benefits people who were brought to the United States illegally as children. The other, DAPA, would have protected the parents of children in the country legally. Many Republicans hailed the outcome as a welcome pushback against executive overreach, while immigrant advocates said it only highlights the need for a comprehensive overhaul of the country’s immigration system.

Nebraska Gov. Pete Rickets said that, as governor, he would continue to advocate for an immigration system that welcomes freedom-loving people who follow the law and enter the country through the legal immigration system. Sens. Deb Fischer and Ben Sasse, both Nebraska Republicans, had signed onto an amicus brief in support of the lawsuit. Rep. Brad Ashford, D-Neb., issued a statement calling on his colleagues to pass bipartisan legislation to address both border security and the status of those in the country illegally. Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson said the decision was important because it protects the constitutional balance of power. The 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, DACA, program remains effective and qualified individuals may still apply.

Nutrition is a fundamental part of your health. You can take supplements and work out, but if your nutrition is not adequate, you won’t see any favorable changes in your body,” said Latonya Ellington, founder of Fit4TheKingdom. Ellington is a certified nutrition coach and fitness chef, and her mission is “help, educate and motivate people to have a healthy lifestyle thanks to good nutrition.”

Fit4TheKingdom got started back in 2009 as a company mainly focused on physical fitness, but Ellington soon noticed an urgent need to review the nutrition of her clients. “If we review nutrition guides,” said Ellington, “they state that, for example, our plate must include dairy products, carbohydrates, protein, vegetables, and fruit, but as we grow older our bodies change, and they cannot process all these foods together. So what I did was separate them into groups according to the needs of each person.”

For Ellington, it is very important that we talk about nutrition in the United States: “Because we can see that the eating habits of many people are causing them to become ill. Food is like medicine, and poor nutrition causes many health issues. But if we can go back to our roots and make wise choices about what we put in our mouths, then we can eradicate some of our males”. As a professional chef, Ellington designs attractive meal plans because “eating healthy does not have to be boring because it is not only about making salads.” Her goal is for every meal to “have a delicious flavor and that the food is easy to digest,” according to each person’s metabolism.

Ellington, who says she has a “fast metabolism,” which means that if she doesn’t eat right she can suffer from a lack of sleep and she’d therefore be more tired. To get to know each person’s metabolism, Ellington recommends that you begin with a test on a quantum resonance analyzer available at the Omaha Wellology Clinic, run by her husband, Dr. Timothy Ellington.

The results of the test will also provide information about possible allergies to some of the products you might be eating on a daily basis, and they might be responsible for health disorders without you realizing it.

According to Ellington, there are some inadequate health conditions that were passed from generation to generation due to them consuming foods that, although traditional in some ethnic groups, don’t offer many benefits for the population.

This is why said habits must be changed, even if it means going against tradition: “We must understand that we are not predisposed to having high blood pressure or high cholesterol or cancer. The only thing these diseases have in common is the setting. So if you change the setting, change the food you eat and make some changes at home you’ll see that the diseases your parents and grandparents suffered from are gone.”
