L

a candidata presidencial demócrata Hillary Clinton visitó la escuela secundaria Omaha North High el lunes 1 de agosto.

Miles se reunieron para escuchar a la mujer que puede convertirse en la primera mujer presidente de los Estados Unidos delinear las metas que desea abordar si es elegida.

Muchos residentes populares de Omaha se presentaron para apoya a Clinton durante la manifestación. El magnate de negocios y filántropo Warren Buffett hizo una aparición en apoyo de Clinton, de hecho, Buffett le dio a Clinton una introducción de primera categoría y hizo rugir a la audiencia antes de que la candidata luchadora subiera al escenario.

Justo antes de que Buffett tomara el escenario Ferial Pearson, un profesor de escuela secundaria y profesora de universidad galardonada nacionalmente subió al escenario y cautivó al público con su relato de primera mano de las injusticias que ha visto entre sus estudiantes y amigos.

“He visto que mis estudiantes gays y transexuales se han enfrentado a la falta de vivienda y han sido atacados por los jóvenes y adultos por igual, he visto a estudiantes que han dejado de venir a la escuela porque sus padres fueron deportados, he perdido amigos a la violencia,” dijo Pearson. La profesora reconocida hizo hincapié en el hecho de que Nebraska y el público estadounidense debe apoyar al candidato que va a trabajar por una reforma migratoria, proteger a nuestros seres queridos y la comunidad LGBTQ, garantizar las libertades religiosas y hacer que los maestros se sienten seguros al venir a trabajar sin el temor de que alguien llegue con un rifle de asalto. “Elijo esperanza, elijo la paz, elijo la bondad, elijo riqueza de perspectiva, elijo Hillary Clinton,” dijo Pearson.

Clinton prometió que en sus primeros 100 días de mandato rompería el estancamiento en Washington y va hacer una inversión mayor en puestos nuevas y empleos bien pagados desde la Segunda Guerra Mundial. “Vamos a hacer la inversión más audaz en la infraestructura estadounidense desde el sistema de carreteras,” dijo Clinton.

“Vamos a arreglar y construir las carreteras, los puentes, los túneles, los puertos, los aeropuertos, los sistemas de agua que necesitamos,” dijo Clinton. Además, Clinton subrayó que ella planea en hacer la matrícula universitaria gratuita para la clase media y libre para todos.

“Es hora de apoyar a las familias trabajadoras, es el momento de dejar claro que cuando la clase media prospera, América prospera y es lo que vamos a volver a hacer!” Exclamó Clinton.

“No voy a descansar hasta que consigamos un aumento en los salarios e ingresos, no descansaré hasta que dejamos claro lo que está en juego en esta elección, por eso necesito su ayuda,” dijo Clinton, y agregó “ vamos a ganar esta elección para el futuro de Estados Unidos! “

Thousands gathered to hear the woman that may become the first female president of the United States outline the goals she wishes to tackle if elected.

Many popular Omaha residents came to bat for Clinton during the rally.

Business magnate and philanthropist Warren Buffett made an appearance in support of Clinton. In fact, Buffett gave Clinton a top-notch introduction and made the crowd roar just before the feisty candidate took the stage.

Just before Buffett took the stage Ferial Pearson, a national award-winning high school teacher and college instructor mesmerized the crowd with her first-hand account of the injustices she has seen among her students and friends.

“I have seen my queer and transgender students experience homelessness and be attacked by youth and adults alike,” said Pearson. “I have seen students stop coming to school because their parents were deported. I have lost friends and loves ones alike to violence.” The well-known educator emphasized the fact that Nebraskans and the American public should support the candidate that will work for immigration reform, protect our loved ones and the LGBTQ community, ensure religious freedoms and make teachers feel safe when coming to work without the fear of being attached with assault rifles.

“I choose hope, I choose peace, I choose kindness, I choose richness of perspective, I choose Hillary Clinton,” said Pearson.

Clinton carefully reiterated the promises she made during the 2016 Democratic National Convention last Thursday. “It starts by making clear we do have to re-write the rules so that our economy works for everyone, not just those at the top,” said Clinton, adding “my overriding mission as president will be to do everything I can to help our country create more jobs with rising income. I believe anyone willing to work hard should be able to find a job that pays well, enough to support a family.”

Investing in the U.S economy and the education of young Americans were at the top of Clinton’s list. She promised that in her first 100 days of office she would break through the gridlock in Washington and make the biggest investment in new and good-paying jobs since World War II. “We are going to make the boldest investment in American infrastructure since the highway system,” said Clinton.

“We are going to fix and build the roads, the bridges, the tunnels, the ports, the airports, the water systems we need,” said Clinton. She pointed out that individuals from rural parts of Nebraska and rural areas across the nation would not be left out.

“We are going to bring diverse economic development to rural communities to support our farmers and others in small town who keep America going In addition to the grand plans of investing heavily in the economic infrastructure of the United States if elected, Clinton outlined her plans to invest in the education of millions of young Americans during her time in office if elected.

“We don’t have a child to waste, we need every child to be given an education to prepare them for the future,” said Clinton. Unfortunately, Clinton pointed out that over 5 million children do not have access to high speed internet in their homes. In order to level the playing field and give children the proper tools for their education Clinton outlined plans to build out broadband to give every home and business access to high speed internet so no kid is left out and left behind. Additionally, Clinton emphasized that she plans on making college tuition free for the middle class and debt-free for everyone.

“It’s time to stand up for working families, it’s time to make clear that when the middle class thrives, America thrives and that is what we are going to get back to doing!” exclaimed Clinton.

I will not rest until we get wages and incomes rising, I will not rest until we make it clear what’s at stake in this election, that’s why I need your help,” said Clinton, adding “let’s win this election for America’s future!”

DESTINADO A TRIUNFAR LATINO CENTER OF THE MIDLANDS

Elders THE IMPORTANCE OF SOCIALIZATION IN SENIORS’ LIVES The lack of social support negatively impacts the health and well-being of seniors. Isolated elderly tend to suffer from depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and stress as well as many other health conditions. Most seniors are hopeful that their families will provide them with social support however, this is not always the case. A lot of times, family members cannot be supportive for many different reasons such as stress due to daily life responsibilities, illness, death, financial problems, job relocation, or caring for someone else already.

Community services such as senior centers can provide the social support needed by the elderly. At the Intercultural Senior Center, the elderly are provided with daily activities to help improve their well-being. The social support offered at the center includes transportation, meals, social services, educational programs, health and wellness, and activities.

POR SALVADOR S. ROBLES a Cena Destino 2016, cuyo anfitrión fue el Latino Center of the Midlands (LCM), se llevó a cabo el lunes por la noche en el Stockyards Exchange Building. Diversos líderes comunitarios, políticos y representantes de varias organizaciones corporativas asistieron al evento para recaudar fondos para apoyar los esfuerzos del LCM para expandir sus servicios a través de programas educacionales en el Sur de Omaha y en las comunidades latinas. “Como siempre nuestra meta principal es extender el conocimiento de lo que está haciendo el LCM por los latinos”, dijo Carolina Quezada, directora del Latino Center of the Midlands. “A través de este evento intentamos destacar a las personas que han aprovechado los programas que ofrecemos en el centro. Es una oportunidad para que las personas conozcan más sobre lo que hacemos”. El evento comenzó con una hora de cocteles, incluyendo una degustación de tequila, seguido de una subasta silenciosa. Esta cena, evento que comenzó hace 12 años, se ha autonombrado como un evento social de recaudación de fondos y es un evento clave para los miembros de la comunidad del Sur de Omaha. “Ha cobrado vida propia”, comenta Quezada. “Es un evento donde se pueden generar nuevos contactos de forma divertida, especialmente por la degustación de tequila para la cual tuvimos la suerte de contar con Mula Restaurant & Tequileria para este año tanto en la degustación como en la cena”.

Después de la hora de coctel, los asistentes comenzaron a tomar sus asientos para la parte de la cena del evento. La maestra de ceremonias para la Cena Destino fue Maya Saenz, la nueva reportera para KMTV News. “Aunque solamente he estado en Omaha durante cuatro meses, es increíble poder ver un lugar como el LCM que está celebrando 45 años de servir a la comunidad latina”, comentó Saenz. “Espero poder compartir las historias de los latinos en la comunidad de Omaha que usualmente no pueden ser escuchados”. he 2016 Destino Dinner hosted by the Latino Center of the Midlands kicked off last Monday night at the Stockyards Exchange Building. Various community leaders, politicians and representatives from different corporate organizations were at the fundraiser to help support the LCM’s efforts in extending services through educational programs to the South Omaha and Latino communities. “As always our main goal is to extend the knowledge of what the LCM is doing for Latinos,” said Carolina Quezada, director of the Latino Center of the Midlands. “Throughout the event we try to highlight the individuals that are touched by programs that are offered at the center. It is an opportunity to educate people to come into the fold on what we do.”

The event started with a cocktail hour featuring a tequila tasting and a silent auction. The dinner, which was started 12 years ago, has branded itself as a social fundraiser and a staple event for South Omaha community members. “It has taken on a life of its own,” Quezada says.

“It’s fun networking, especially with the tequila tasting and we were fortunate enough to have Mula Restaurant & Tequileria catering this year for the dinner.” After the cocktail hour, people began to take their seats for the dinner portion of the event. The emcee was the new reporter from KMTV news, Maya Saenz. “Although I have only been in Omaha for about four months now, its amazing to see a place like the LCM which is celebrating its 45th year serving the Latino community,” Saenz said. “I hope that I am able to share the stories of Latinos in the Omaha community who often go unheard.” The program continued with Quezada giving a brief background on the legacy of the LCM. Community members concerned about the education organized the center back in 1971, which for many years was known as the Chicano Awareness Center.

At the time, Chicano students were experiencing low levels of academic achievement, poor self-image and little awareness about their heritage as Chicanos. The center offered classes in Mexican art, music, folkloric dance and Spanish and English language instruction for both youth and adults. The center officially changed its name in 2007 in order to fully incorporate the growing number of Latinos from all backgrounds. “Communities change, situations change and organizations like the LCM have to acclimate,” Quezada said. “We have a renewed purpose and confidence towards the future especially through the stories of our students who’s “Destinos” invariably shape the organization.”

Quezada then introduced Ralston High student Eder Sanchez who takes part in the Joven Noble (Noble Youth) program, a youth intervention group aimed at developing young Latinos in learning a stronger decision-making compass for themselves through various activities.

“Before Joven Noble I would’ve considered myself a delinquent,” Sanchez said. “Ask me now, and I consider myself an athlete, a graduate of Joven Noble, but most importantly a better person. This program was my safe place, I learned to keep my word, stay in school and if I commit to something, I do it!”

Over $4,500 was raised between various donors throughout the evening. Senator Heath Mello and his wife, Catherine, were the honorary guests for the event and spoke to the crowd of the continued need to assist the organization. “The LCM at the forefront right now is not only providing new ladders of opportunity in respects to education for Latino families, they are also providing a needed voice for social justice and policy changes in the legislature, city and across the state,” Sen. Mello said. The event concluded with the LCM’s board president Julissa Lara thanking all who came to support the organization. “It’s amazing to see our own people in the community coming to the center, learning something of value and using that spark to help them with their own Destino,” Lara said. “That’s ultimately what tonight was about, changing lives and Destinos.”

Joven Noble started in 2013 as a pilot program and is now featured in four different high schools around the metro area. “As proud as we are about our youth growing into positive individuals for change, we are just as proud of our adult learners that come through the doors of the LCM,” Quezada said. In the last year over 400 students have completed the GED program at the LCM. Karen and Roxanna Recinos, two sisters who were each other’s support system through the program, spoke of the important work the LCM is doing to help adult learners like themselves. “My husband did not want me to go to class and did not support me while I was working towards my GED,” Roxanna said. “Both my sister and I worked full-time jobs and we would then go to class at the LCM. We leaned on each other for support even though it was hard and we passed!” Roxanna continued, “It’s easy to place value on things that cost money. Terminando el ciclo de la violencia POR MARINA ROSADO

merced de su pareja, una persona es víctima de violencia doméstica. Las amenazas y los insultos escalan hasta convertirse en golpes. Escapar parece una opción, pero, ¿a dónde?. Cuando una persona llama a WCA solicitando ayuda, sea cual sea su caso, se le asignará una defensora (advocate) que evaluará la situación. WCA es una organización no lucrativa en el condado de Douglas enfocada en ayudar gratuitamente a quienes han sido víctimas de la violencia y el asalto sexual.

Si ocurrieron acontecimientos que deban ser notificados a las autoridades, la defensora entrará en contacto con la policía para ayudar a la víctima a realizar el reporte pertinente. Cuando la víctima presenta lesiones graves, se le acompañará al hospital. Y si aún después de recibir tratamiento médico no consigue superar el penoso incidente, los servicios de consejería se pondrán a su disposición. De igual manera, si la víctima debe testificar en la corte en contra de su agresor, contará con la representación legal disponible. "Lo que nosotros queremos es que éstas personas sobrevivan a la situación que están viviendo y que sepan salir de ella y tener una mejor vida después", dijo Guadalupe Rivera quien es Representante Acreditada del Consejo de Apelaciones de Inmigración (BIA) y trabaja en el Departamento de Inmigración de WCA. Según Rivera, ella es una de las cuatro personas con dicha certificación en el estado de Nebraska y aunque se unió a WCA apenas en septiembre del 2015, cuenta ya con 16 años de experiencia en temas de inmigración. Su función principal es la de representar a los clientes ante la oficina y la corte de inmigración.

Si bien WCA cuenta con las herramientas para atender o según la naturaleza del caso, referir, a quienes hayan sufrido de alguna agresión sexual o sean víctimas del tráfico de personas, su compromiso inicia desde la prevención misma de dichas situaciones mediante la educación en escuelas, empresas y grupos comunitarios. Para ello ofrece excelentes programas como la Academia de Liderazgo para Niñas, que se brinda a alumnas de los grados quinto y sexto, donde las chicas aprenden sobre lo que es una relación de noviazgo saludable entre otros interesantes temas de crecimiento personal. Cuando una persona acepta que necesita ayuda y llama a WCA, se da la oportunidad de romper el círculo de violencia que la mantiene atrapada. Es entonces que las probabilidades de salir adelante se vuelven infinitas toda vez que el lema de la agencia es el de que las familias "permanezcan seguras y crezcan fuertes", por lo que las impulsará a lograr su autosuficiencia.

"Como latinos tenemos 'mucho aguante', hemos aprendido ésa palabra, '¡aguanta!'. Mira, 'él es especial', 'ella es especial', 'aguántalo', 'aguántalo por los niños'. Pero no es así, todos merecemos vivir tranquilos, en paz, felices", concluyó Rivera quien agregó que para que WCA mantenga sus puertas abiertas, necesita de voluntarios y de donaciones urgentes de productos para la higiene personal, así como pañales, fórmula y ropa para bebés.

Las siglas WCA corresponden a Women's Center for Advancement, que se podría traducir como Centro para el Progreso de la Mujer. Sin embargo, el término no significa que los servicios únicamente sean para mujeres sino también se atiende a los varones, ya que como señaló Rivera, "los hombres también pueden llegar a ser víctimas de la violencia doméstica". Con respecto a los clientes hispanos que llegan a WCA buscando apoyo, Rivera enfatizó que los casos más comunes que manejan los abogados de la organización, son los de "las personas que necesitan ayuda en temas de divorcio, sobre cómo manejar la situación cuando hay niños de por medio, las custodias y qué es lo que deberían de hacer para proteger a sus hijos". Al igual que Rivera, Christopher Navarrete es parte del equipo de WCA, donde labora como administrador de casos desde mayo de año pasado: "Ayudo a la gente dependiendo lo que necesita, ya sea buscando dónde vivir o un trabajo o escuela, según lo que le está pasando en ése momento y cuál es su situación". Por las características esenciales de los servicios, el tema de la confidencialidad es fundamental para WCA tal como lo enfatizó Navarrete: "Nosotros no discutimos los casos con otras personas, todo se queda entre nosotros y los clientes. Y si ellos desean que hablemos con otras agencias entonces deben firmar un documento donde nos dan su autorización para

ponerlos en contacto". Navarrete reconoció que para las víctimas, sobre todo para aquellas que son hispanas, "es muy difícil hablar del tema y hablar con nosotros para decirnos lo que está pasando en su vida, pero quiero que sepan que si están pasando por algo difícil nosotros nos tomamos el tiempo que sea necesario para ayudarles con todo". Muchas personas que han llegado de otros países a la ciudad, aún no saben que existen refugios donde pueden estar protegidos y como comentó Navarrete, "los hay para mujeres, para hombres y para niños, para toda la familia", y son indispensables más que nada en casos en los que la madre y sus pequeños no tienen recursos pero deben mudarse a un sitio seguro "donde el abusador no los irá a buscar".

CONCURSO DE ENSAYO EN EL MES DE LA HERENCIA HISPANA La Comisión Latino Americana de Nebraska invita a la juventud de Nebraska a participar en el 10mo Concurso Anual de Ensayos para Conmemorar el Mes de la Herencia Hispana en el Estado. El mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana fue promulgado oficialmente en agosto 17 de 1998 para conmemorar del 25 septiembre al octubre 15 la historia, cultura y contribuciones de aquellos que tienen raíces con México, España, Centroamérica, Sudamérica y el Caribe. Para el ensayo, el Comité del Mes de la Herencia Hispana está pidiendo a los estudiantes que escriban sobre la importancia de la participación cívica entre la comunidad latina, así como las razones importantes por la que los latinos se deben involucrar en las elecciones, animar a otros a ejercer el voto, ofrecerse como voluntario, tomar parte en las organizaciones de estudiantes, conocer y contactar a sus funcionarios electos locales, y postularse para un puesto público.

Algunos de los requisitos a considerar cuando escriban su ensayo son: el significado personal de participación cívica, la manera en que se puede participar, la razón por la que es importante el comunicarse con los funcionarios electos para comunicarles los asuntos en los que están a favor o en contra, como y por qué es importante la participación cívica en el mes de la Herencia Hispana, cuales son las barreras que previenen a los latinos de participar en actividades cívicas y las formas en que los latinos se pueden comprometer totalmente. Los ensayos se calificaran por su gramática, contenido, creatividad y entendimiento del tema. LATINOS Y EL IMPACTO DE LA CRISIS ECONÓMICA EN NEBRASKA Investigadoras de la Universidad de Nebraska en Omaha, UNO, han publicado recientemente un nuevo reporte que detalla las tendencias demográficas y socioeconómicas de los latinos en Nebraska, antes, durante y después de la crisis económica del 2008.

El estudio está titulado como “Latinos y la Recesión Económica en Nebraska: Tendencias Demográficas y Socioeconómicas 2005-2013/2014”. El reporte fue producido por miembros de la Oficina de Estudios Latino/Latino Americanos de la UNO, OLLAS, del Departamento de Sociología y Antropología, y el Centro de Investigación de Asuntos Públicos, CPAR. Esta publicación resalta que no obstante a Nebraska le fue relativamente bien durante la crisis económica, los latinos, y en especial a los latinos nacidos fuera del país, parecieron ser los mas afectados que otros grupos durante esta crisis. Mientras que los indicadores sociales, como el dominio del lenguaje, la inscripción a la universidad y asuntos similares, han mostrado una mejoría conforme avanza el tiempo, el estado socioeconómico en general de los latinos continúa siendo vulnerable durante las recesiones económicas. Este reporte marca la primera vez en que se han estudiado los indicadores demográficos y socioeconómicos de la población latina en Nebraska, antes, durante y después de una crisis económica.

Al utilizar los datos del Censo, el reporte determina las tendencias de los indicadores en las personas con derecho al voto, el uso del lenguaje y el dominio del idioma inglés, los logros educativos, empleo, ingresos, pobreza, juventud y accesos a servicios sociales. La Oficina de Estudios Latino/ Latino Americanos de la Universidad de Nebraska en Omaha, UNO, se dedica a desarrollar la capacidad institucional e iniciativas académicas con el fin de mejorar el entendimiento de asuntos latino/latinoamericanos y la población dentro y fuera del país.

Ending the Cycle of Violence

t the hands of a spouse, someone is the victim of domestic violence. Threats and insults escalate and turn into punches. Escaping seems like an option, but where to? When someone calls the WCA, a non-profit organization in Douglas County focused on offering free assistance to those who have been victims of violence and sexual assault , he/she will be assigned an advocate that will evaluate the situation.

If there is something that must be reported to the authorities, the advocate will contact the police to help the victim file the corresponding report. If the victim has any serious injuries, they are taken to the hospital. And if after getting medical treatment they are having trouble overcoming this unfortunate event, there are counseling services available. And if the victim has to testify against his/her aggressor, there is legal representation available.

"What we want is for these people to survive the situation they are living through so they can learn how to get out of it and have a better life," said Guadalupe Rivera, Accredited Representative at the Immigration Department at WCA. According to Rivera, she is one of only four people with said certification in Nebraska, and even though she joined WCA in September 2015, she has over 16 years of experience working on immigration cases. Her main role is representing clients before the immigration office and immigration court.

WCA are the initials for the Women's Center for Advancement.

However, the name does not mean that its services are only available to women because they also provide them to men since, as stated by Rivera, "men can also be victims of domestic violence."

As for the Latino clients that come to the WCA, Rivera emphasized that the most common cases handled by the lawyers of the organization are from "people who need help with a divorce, about how to handle the situation when the couple has kids, dealing with custody issues and helping people learn what they need to do to protect their children." Along with Rivera, Christopher Navarrete is part of the WCA team, where he has been working as case manager since May of last year: “I help people depending on what they need, be that helping them find a place to live or a job or a school, all depending on what they’re going through at that moment and what their situation is.”

The WCA has the resources required to provide several services or, depending on the nature of a case, to refer someone who has suffered a sexual assault or who has been a victim of human trafficking, the staff ’s commitment starts with preventing said situations through education in school, companies, and community groups. There are excellent programs such as the Girls Leadership Academy for students who are in fifth and sixth grade, and that teaches girls about what a healthy relationship with a boyfriend is like, among other topics. When a person admits he/ she needs help and calls the WCA, it presents an opportunity to break the vicious cycle of violence that is keeping that person trapped. After that step the odds of being able to overcome the situation are endless. The agency’s motto is that families “stay safe and grow strong,” which is why they encourage people to become self-sufficient.

“Since we Latinos are ‘strong,’ we have learned to say ‘hang in there!’ or ‘he’s special,’ ‘she’s special,’ ‘you must stay there for the kids.’ But things shouldn’t be like that. We all deserve to live a peaceful and relaxed life, being happy,” concluded Rivera, who added that in order for the WCA to keep its doors open, there’s a need for volunteers and donations of products for personal hygiene, as well as of diapers, baby formula, and baby clothes.

Due to the nature of the services they provide, confidentiality is fundamental for WCA, as emphasized by Navarrete: “We never discuss our cases with other people and everything is kept between our clients and us. If they want us to talk to other agencies, then they must sign a document where they authorize us

to do that.” Navarrete acknowledged that for victims, especially for those who are of Latino origin, “it is very hard to talk about the issue, to talk with us about what is going on in their life, but I want everyone to know that if you’re going through something difficult we will take as long as needed to help you with everything.” Many people who have come to the city from another country don’t know there are shelters where they can feel protected and, as Navarrete said, “there are places for women, for men, for children and the entire family,” and they are valuable resources for cases where the mother and the little ones don’t have the money needed to move to a safe location “where the aggressor won’t go looking for them.”

HISPANIC HERITAGE ESSAY CONTEST The Nebraska Latino American Commission invites the youth of Nebraska to participate in the 10th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month State Commemoration Essay Contest. National Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 to October 15, is a period to celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of those who can trace their ancestry to Mexico, Spain, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.

For the essay, the Hispanic Heritage Month Committee is asking students to write about the importance of civic engagement among the Latino community, as the important reasons for Latinos and Latinas to engage in voting, encouraging others to vote, volunteering, taking part in student organizations, knowing and contacting your local elected official, and running for public office.

Essays will be judged by grammar, content, creativity, and understanding of the theme. All essays are due by Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at 5:00 p.m.

LATINOS AND THE IMPACT OF ECONOMIC CRISIS IN NEBRASKA Researchers from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, UNO, have released a new report detailing the demographic and socioeconomic trends of Nebraska’s Latinos before, during and after the 2008 economic crisis. The study is titled “Latinos and the Economic Downturn in Nebraska: Demographic and Socioeconomic Trends 2005-2013/2014.”

Members of the UNO Office of Latino/Latin American Studies, OLLAS, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and Center for Public Affairs Research, CPAR, produced the report. This publication highlights that although Nebraska fared relatively well during the economic crisis, Latinos, and particularly foreign-born Latinos, appeared to be more affected than others. While many social indicators, such as language proficiency, college enrollment and the like, have shown improvement over time, the socioeconomic status of Latinos overall continues to be vulnerable to economic downturns.

This report marks the first time that the Nebraska Latino population’s demographic and socioeconomic indicators have been studied before, during and after an economic crisis. Using Census data, the report examines trends in voter eligibility, language use and English proficiency, educational attainment, employment, income, poverty, youth and household indicators, and access to social services.

The Office of Latino/Latin American Studies of the Great Plains at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, UNO, is dedicated to developing institutional capacities and academic initiatives aimed at improving the understanding of Latino/LatinAmerican issues and populations within and across borders. La exhibición “Anacronias/Anachronisms 1984-2015” es una retrospectiva de la obra del famoso fotógrafo Ignacio Rivero. El ojo de Rivero siempre se ha dibujado a lugares que fueron creados por los seres humanos y luego abandonados, una especie de metáfora de la vida en su natal México. Friday, May 20 marked one-year anniversary of the day Officer Kerrie Orozco was fatally shot as she and other law enforcement officers tried to arrest a fugitive. For that reasson, Omaha will serve as a host to this exhibition called: Horses of Honor, consisting of eight horses paying tribute to Omaha’s fallen police officers, and an Omaha artist designed each statue. They will stand in Turner Park at Midtown Crossing for a year until next spring.
