a Asociación de Traductores e Intérpretes de Nebraska realizó con éxito su conferencia anual, en las instalaciones de la Universidad de Bellevue, en la que más de 200 personas participaron activamente para perfeccionar sus servicios de traducción e interpretación en Nebraska y en el resto del país. Sobre este tema, valdría la pena indicar que muchas leyes federales, estatales y locales requieren de la asistencia lingüística para lograr garantizar la igualdad de acceso a los servicios públicos para todas aquellas personas que tienen un manejo limitado del inglés.

Dicha asistencia lingüística debe ser proveída por verdaderos profesionales en la traducción e interpretación, que constantemente busquen estar actualizado en su materia, para ofrecer un servicio puntual, preciso y al día; máxime al considerar que la migración al país y al estado mismo sigue en constante evolución. Para darse una idea de la diversidad de residentes que requieren de un traductor y/o interprete, de acuerdo con Marsha Conroy, quien escribe para la gaceta de NATI, solamente en Lincoln hay más de 50 idiomas que se hablan.

Se sabe también que más de la mitad de toda la población de sudaneses que hay en los Estados Unidos, están asentados en Nebraska, y es precisamente en el Sur de omaha, de dentro del condado de Douglas, donde se ubica la comunidad más grande de Sudán, cuya demanda de servicios adecuados de traducción e interpretación es grande. “Además, la comunidad asiática se ha multiplicado en los últimos años y todas estas son comunidades que tienen necesidades logísticas que se deben cumplir de alguna manera”, escribió Conroy. Indudablemente el idioma más solicitado en Nebraska es el español, pero lo es también el

Nuer, Somalí y Árabe. Lo suele ser también el Vietnamita, Karen, Chino, Coreano, Ruso, Dinka, Suajili, Tailandés, Francés, Filipino, Tagalog, Judas Árabe y Bosnio. Por lo anterior, Conroy indica: “Es evidente que más grupos que manejan otros idiomas están creciendo en la región del medio oeste de los Estados Unidos, cuyas necesidades lingüísticas son tan urgentes como las de cualquier otra lengua. Por ello, las necesidades de contar con intérpretes y traductores altamente calificados seguirán en aumento, a medita que la población internacional de Nebraska siga creciendo”.

En este punto, hay que indicar que NATI apuesta por una capacitación constante en la comunidad de intérpretes y traductores, para que estos honraren un código de ética que les haga realizar su laboro con los más altos estándares de precisión y habilidad. De acuerdo con Margory A. Bancroft!, quien ha contribuido con sus pensamientos en la pasada publicación de la gaceta de NATI: “indiscutiblemente, el uso de intérpretes inexpertos es arriesgado e incluso peligroso en los servicio públicos”. Y es que, un interprete/traductor que no se capacita, indudablemente caerá en la falta de precisión, imparcialidad y conocimiento de la terminología técnica que requiere cada área, generando graves errores que incluso cambia el mensaje y omite información clave.

De ahí que todo agremiado a NATI sabe que se debe buscan la actualización en su profesión, siendo una buena alternativa el acudir a la conferencia que anualmente realizan, la cual abarca una gran diversidad de idiomas. Basta subrayar que de acuerdo con el último censo poblacional, en los Estados Unidos se hablan más de 300 lenguas, (sin considerar dialectos), lo cual requiere de un efectivo grupo de aductores e intérpretes para cada

variante. En este punto hay que resaltar que cuando el lenguaje y las barreras culturales impiden la comunicación básica, es muy difícil que las diversas instancias el gobierno y de la sociedad en general puedan llevar a cabo la tarea de servir y proteger al público. Por ello, es un respiro saber que NATI se encuentra trabajando por satisfacer las necesidades lingüísticas de la población, al asumir una tara vital de educación. De hecho, cada año se busca contar en la conferencia con personas que manejen cualquier otro idioma, aparte del inglés, con la finalidad de perfeccionar y promover su trabajo. Actualmente, se cumplen diez y siete años de actividades, teniendo gran impacto en las agencias policiales, médicas y de diversos servicios en todo el estado.

Llama la atención que en los 2 días del evento, parte de los invitados especiales para hablar frente al público, fue personal de el periódico El Perico. quienes expusieron diversos temas para saber como utilizar las herramientas de google, que permiten estar mejor conectados con el mundo globalizado actual, según Dinah Gómez, representante de dicho medio de comunicación Resumiendo, el uso de intérpretes inexpertos es arriesgado e incluso peligroso en los servicio públicos, según Margory A. Bancroft, quien ha contribuido con sus pensamientos en la pasada publicación de la gaceta de NATI. Por consiguiente, merece una ovación saber que más de 200 personas concluyeron sus talleres, ponencias y exhibiciones de manera exitosa, reiterando su compromiso por llevar a un nivel más alto el trabajo social y comunitario de NATI. he annual conference of the Nebraska Association of Translators and Interpreters (NATI) took place recently at Bellevue University. Over 200 people actively participated in this event to perfect their translation and interpretation services in Nebraska and in the rest of the country. We must mention that many federal, state and local laws require that linguistic assistance be provided to guarantee that people who have a limited grasp of the English language have equal access to public services.

Said linguistic assistance must be provided by expert interpreters and translators who are constantly working towards improving their skills for them to offer a precise and updated service, especially considering how every day more and more people continue to arrive at the country and specifically to Nebraska. To give you an idea of the diverse range of residents who require the service of translators and/or interpreters, Marsha Conroy, who writes for NATI, mentions that just in Lincoln alone there are over 50 languages spoken by its residents.

More than half the Sudanese population in the United States is located in Nebraska, specifically in South Omaha in Douglas County, a community that has a great need for translation and interpretation services. “On top of this, the Asian community has greatly grown during the last few years, and all have logistics needs and requirements that must be fulfilled,” wrote Conroy. Without a doubt Spanish is the most requested language in

Nebraska, but so are Nuer, Somali, and Arabic. There’s also a need for Vietnamese, Karen, Chinese, Korean, Russian, Dinka, Swahili, Thai, French, Filipino, Tagalog, and Bosnian support.

Because of all this, Conroy says: “It is clear that more groups with other languages continue to grow in the Midwest region of the United States, with urgent linguistic needs. Because of this, the need for having highly qualified translators and interpreters will continue to grow as the international population of Nebraska continues to grow.” NATI mentions that translators and interpreters must always continue to train and improve their skills, so that they can honor the ethics code to provide a service of the highest standards of accuracy and skill.

According to Margory A. Bancroft, who contributed her opinion to the previous issue of the NATI gazette: “Without a doubt, the use of untrained interpreters is risky and dangerous for public services.” A translator or interpreter who isn’t properly trained will make mistakes, won’t be impartial and his/her knowledge of technical terminology will be lacking, muddling the message and omitting key information. All NATI members know they must constantly update their knowledge while at events such as the yearly conference that recently took place where they work on a wide range of languages.

We have to consider that, according to the last population census, over 300 languages (not taking into consideration any dialects) are currently spoken in the United States, which means

there’s a need for larger groups of interpreters and translators for each language. When languages and cultural barriers get in the way of basic communication, it is hard for government agencies and departments to serve and protect the public.

Because of all this, it is great to hear that NATI is currently working hard to satisfy the linguistic needs of the population by taking on a vital educational role. In fact every year for the conference they try to have as many people as possible who are experts in any language other than English to be able to perfect and promote their work. It has been over seventeen years now of hard work and activities that have had a major impact on law enforcement and medical agencies, as well as on a wide range of services in the state.

During the two-day event, some of the special guests invited to speak in front of the audience were El Perico staff member Dinah Gomez, who talked about the many tools we can use, such as Google, that allow us to connect better to the current globalized world we live in. As Bancroft mentioned, using inexperienced interpreters is risky and very dangerous for public services, which is why it’s great to learn that during the conference over 200 people successfully participated in the many workshops, lectures, and exhibits, reiterating their commitment to bringing the social and community work of NATI to the highest level. Excerpted below are some of his main messages.

ON DONALD TRUMP’S R EFUSAL TO R ELEASE TA X R ETUR NS “How many of you would be afraid to have your tax return made public? You’re only afraid if you’ve got something to be afraid about. And you’re not. He’s not afraid … of the IRS. He’s afraid because of you.”

TRUMP’S EGO “Another thing he said is he says America isn’t great anymore … I disagree with him violently on that subject …

I’m going to quote his exact words – I’m going to read this because I want to be sure I’ve got it exactly right. He says, ‘No one knows the system better than me, which is why I alone can fix it.’ Well, la-dee-da … I didn’t really realize we were in such grave danger… It takes some kind of nerve, or something else, to really have the notion that out of 325 million people, you’re the only one who can fix it.”

TRUMP’S 1995 INITIAL PUBLIC OFFERING OF STOCK “In the next 10 years, the company loses money every year – every single year … he takes out $44 million in compensation during that period … if a monkey had thrown a dart at the stock page, the monkey on average would have made 150 percent. Now, the young son of Mr. and Mrs. Khan died a dozen or so years ago. In that dozen of years, we’ve employed a lot of people. I’ve had fun doing it. We’ve made money just like Donald Trump has made. I have made no sacri-

fice. No member of my family has gone – no member of the Buffett family has gone to Iraq or Afghanistan. No member of the Trump family has gone to Iraq or Afghanistan. We’ve both done extremely well during this period, and our families haven’t sacrificed any thing, and Donald Trump and I haven’t sacrificed any thing.

But how in the world can you stand up to a couple of parents who have lost a son and talked about sacrificing because you were building a bunch of buildings?”

THE ECONOMY “America, in terms of delivering wealth, has been incredible. In terms of distributing wealth, it has not been living up to what I consider its potential … But it hasn’t worked out that way. This country, while making some people enormously wealthy, has left people behind. And in Hillary Clinton, you have somebody that cares about that. Let me give you just one more statistic and I’ll get away from that. I know how popular that is. But in the first year of the Forbes 400 back in the 1980s, the aggregate wealth of the 400 was $93 billion. You can look it up on the internet. Currently, it’s $2,374,000,000. That’s 25 for one. Now, I’d like everybody that’s had 25 for one themselves, if they’d raise their hand. Yeah. It hasn’t happened. They told us it would trick le down. Yeah.”

A CHALLENGE “I have pledged today that on Election Day, November 8th, I will take at least 10 people to the polls who would otherwise have difficulty getting there. And when you go home tonight, you can go to a website called … Drive2Vote, and if you go there, it will offer you information on three things: how to register; how, if you need a ride on November 8th, you may find someone who will take you, will take care of that; and it’ll also give you the chance to volunteer to take some people, whether it’s 10 or a lesser number. Today, I reserved Ollie the Trolley for November 8th. It seats 32. I’m going to be on it all day. I’m going to do selfies – whatever it takes … my goal is to have the turnout in Douglas-Sarpy Counties, the 2nd District, is to have the turnout here be the highest percentage of potential voters of any district in the country. Let’s give America a civics lesson. How about it?”

ON HILLARY CLINTON “Thirty-nine men signed it [the Constitution of the United States], and in Article II, describing the qualifications for the president of the United States, male pronouns –‘he,’ ‘his’ and ‘him’ – were used 20 times. Just imagine that … No ‘hers,’ no ‘shes.’ Well, on January 20th, we’re going to elect the best president we’ve ever had, and somebody is going to change those pronouns: Hillary Rodham Clinton!”

n febrero del 2015 se consolidó Yo Soy Salud y Vida, grupo no lucrativo enfocado en las mujeres hispanas, con el cual se busca beneficiar a toda la familia. Yeimi Chávez, la Directora Ejecutiva, explicó que todo comenzó con mensajes en Facebook: "Las mujeres aquí en la comunidad de Omaha a veces no tenemos la motivación, ni la fuerza, ni la fortaleza para seguir adelante solas. Siempre pagamos un gym y vamos nada más como un mes o la mitad del mes". Las mujeres comentaban sus preocupaciones y empezaron a apoyarse unas a otras, reuniéndose en parques públicos para hacer ejercicio y aprender a cambiar los hábitos alimenticios que llevaran a sus seres queridos a una vida más saludable.

"Fue fácil para mí - relató Chávez quien nació en Michoacán -, porque yo trabajaba con la comunidad hispana desde hace cinco años atrás como Promotora de Salud, y quise ponerme como ejemplo". Actualmente hay más de 200 mujeres en "Yo Soy Salud y Vida", en su mayoría inmigrantes, de diferentes edades y ocupaciones, pero todas con historias maravillosas de superación, que comparten en la página donde las siguen más de 1,700 personas. María Laura Velasco por ejemplo, se integró al grupo porque aunque realizaba un trabajo pesado en la construcción, tenía las tardes libres, lo que le permitía seguir las actividades que se programaban en espacios abiertos, siempre y cuando el clima lo permitiera: "Me gustó porque fuimos integrándonos como familias, llevando a los niños y conociéndonos más. Yo busqué al grupo para tener un momento para mi ¡y me encantó!". Velasco es originaria de Jalisco y como presidenta de "Yo Soy Salud y Vida", está muy interesada en promover la participación cívica de sus compañeras por lo que es una de las voluntarias en el Heartland Workers Center dirigido por Sergio Sosa quien generosamente les ha dado un espacio en sus propias instalaciones.

Ahí, mujeres como Velasco han tomado el entrenamiento para impulsar a que quienes ya sean ciudadanos americanos se registren y ejerzan sus derechos en las próximas elecciones presidenciales: "Vamos a ir casa por casa, explicándoles que no hay que tener miedo, que hay que salir a votar. Es bien importante el cambio para que nuestra comunidad tenga un lugar como nosotros, al que puedan acudir y solucionar sus problemas ya sean migratorios, de salud, económicos, sociales y todo lo que está afectando a la comunidad hispana". Por su parte, Génesis Ramírez, encargada de publicitar al grupo en las redes sociales, asiste a los talleres del programa de la Academia Ciudadana del Departamento de Policía de Omaha, para aprender sobre todos y cada uno de los departamentos de la agencia, "y ayudar a mi comunidad compartiendo ésa información". Ramírez, quien llegó a este país desde su estado natal,

Campeche, comentó que las clases que hasta ahora ha tomado son muy valiosas en estos momentos, cuando varios oficiales han perdido la vida en penosos acontecimientos: "Aprendí que cuando se nos detiene por alguna causa, debemos obedecer las indicaciones del policía y si en algún momento no recibimos el trato adecuado, tenemos derecho a presentar nuestra queja. Yo tengo un niño de 12 años que va a ser adolescente y después va a estar manejando, así que le voy a explicar lo que debe de hacer". Y ya que tocamos el tema de su colaboración con el Departamento de Policía de Omaha (OPD), cabe destacar que el grupo "Yo Soy Salud y Vida" trabaja en conjunto con la Especialista en Prevención del Crimen, Ofelia Robles, ayudándole con tareas como la preparación del equipo especial que usaron los niños del Kids Omaha Police Academy, y desde el año pasado tienen a su cargo el huerto comunitario de la Jefatura de Policía del Sureste.

Yolanda Orellana, otra de las integrantes, señaló que ésa tarea les brinda la oportunidad de convivir con sus esposos e hijos, "para enseñarles a los niños de dónde viene la fruta o la verdura, cómo se riega y cómo se cosecha". Hija de inmigrantes, Orellana nació en California y para ella el grupo, "es una familia", a la cual se unió buscando una solución a sus problemas de salud pues padece de alta presión y la controla manteniéndose activa y comiendo saludable: "Aprendo mucho de las experiencias de las demás chicas de nuestro grupo, es una relación entre amigas". Esos lazos se fortalecen con una actividad mensual llamada "té entre amigas", donde tocan temas que van desde la educación hasta el empoderamiento de la mujer.

"Del Methodist College vienen a ayudarnos las doctoras y las enfermeras. Todo es profesional y confidencial. Tenemos chicas que tienen cáncer, diabetes, presión arterial alta, colesterol o enfermedades crónicas que no han podido superar y el grupo ha ayudado a que puedan llegar a una meta, a que estén saludables físicamente, psicológicamente y espiritualmente", concluyó Chávez añadiendo que el evento más grande, será una fiesta familiar para celebrar sus múltiples logros, el sábado 16 de diciembre.

40 estudiantes de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, lograron una beca para estudiar inglés en el Midwest. Esto les permitió ser recibidos por el Consulado de México, quien les hizo un recorrido por los lugares más sobresalientes de Omaha.

En una recepción privada, BERENICE RODRIGUEZ, acompañada de su hijo ROBERTO ZAVALA, presentaron el espacio donde el diseñador Internacional, DIEGO MEDEL, mostrará sus diseños en Omaha. El lugar será Casa Robertas, cuyas puertas abrirán este mes de agosto en el Sur de Omaha.

"Yo Soy Salud y Vida" Y

Active Latino women search for integral wellbeing

o Soy Salud y Vida (I'm Health and Life) is a nonprofit founded in 2015 to focus on Latino women with an aim to benefit families. Executive director Yeimi Chavez explained that it all began with Facebook messages. "Women in the Omaha community sometimes don't have the motivation, strength, and courage to do things on their own,” she said. “We always pay for a gym membership and only go for a month or for half of that." The women would talk about their concerns and began to support each other, meeting at public parks to exercise and learn how to change eating habits so that their loved ones could have a healthier life.

"It was easy for me," said Chavez, who was born in Michigan, "because I had been working in the Latino community for over five years as a health promoter, and I wanted to set myself as the example." There are currently more than 200 women in Yo Soy Salud y Vida, and most of them are immigrants. They come from all age groups and professions, and they all have wonderful stories to share on the website that is followed by over 1,700 people. Maria Laura Velasco, for example, joined the group because even though she did a lot of heavy work in construction she had some free afternoons. "I liked this because we started to get to know each other better,” she said. “We started to bring our kids. I joined because I wanted to have a good time and I loved it!"

Velasco is originally from Jalisco and as president of Yo Soy Salud y Vida, she is very interested in promoting the civic participation of her fellow members, which is why she's a volunteer at the Heartland Workers Center run by Sergio Sosa who has generously provided them with a space at the Center. At that space, women like Velasco have received training to assist those who have already become a U.S. citizen to register and vote in the upcoming presidential elections: "We go from home to home, explaining to people that they don't have to be afraid and that they should go out and vote. This is very important for our community so that people can have a place they can go to find a solution to their problems, so they can solve the immigration, health, financial and social issues that are affecting the Latino community."

several police officers have died during unfortunate events: "I learned that when we are stopped by an officer, we must obey all of his/her instructions and that if at some point we are not treated properly, we have a right to file a complaint. I have a 12-year-old boy who will become a teenager and will then be driving around, so I'm going to explain what he has to do."

And speaking of the Omaha Police Department (OPD), we must highlight that Yo Soy Salud y Vida works closely with Crime Prevention Specialist Ofelia Robles, helping her with such tasks as preparing the special equipment that will be used by children for the Kids Omaha Police Academy, and last year they also started to help with the community vegetable garden at the Southeast Police Headquarters. Yolanda Orellana, another member of the group, mentioned that this gives them an opportunity to share some extra time with their husbands and children, “and we can teach our kids where fruits or vegetables come from, how to water plants and how to harvest them.”

Orellana, the daughter of immigrants, was born in California. To her, the group “is one big family” she joined in search of a solution to her health problems. She has high blood pressure and keeps it in check by staying active and eating healthy. “I’ve learned a lot from the experiences of other members of our groups, since we’re all friends.” These bonds have strengthened thanks to a monthly activity called “tea with friends,” where they talk about topics that go from education to the empowerment of women.

“For me, it is very important that we empower Latino women so they can become leaders, because that’s how I got started,” emphasized Chavez. "Methodist College is sending doctors and nurses to help us,” Chavez said. Everything is professional and strictly confidential. We have girls who have cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol or chronic diseases that they haven’t been able to overcome, and the group has helped them to set a goal – to be physically, psychologically and spiritually healthy,” concluded Chavez, adding that the largest event will be a family party that will take place on Saturday, December 16.

Genesis Ramirez, who is in charge of promoting the group on social media, is participating in the workshops for the Citizen Academy program of the Omaha Police Department so that she can learn more about each and every department in the agency "and to help my community by sharing that information." Ramirez, who arrived in this country from her hometown in Campeche, Mexico, mentioned that the classes she's taken so far have proven to be very valuable, in a time when

FREE IMMIGRATION WORKSHOP The United Food & Commercial Workers, UFCW, has joined partnership with the Heartland Workers Center to bring a free immigration workshop for the South Omaha Community. Through the immigration workshop staff from the UFWC and HWC will be with the applicants from start to finish throughout the entire application process for citizenship. During the workshop applicants will receive information on immigration programs and how to qualify.

The workshop also will be offering pre-screening application and identify documents they would need to ensure applicants are eligible and ready to apply for naturalization. Also, legal help and advice will be provided on submitting applications for naturalization, including identify issues or “red flags” that would require legal advice or representation.
