No puedo enfatizar lo suficiente que es devastador para los niños,” dice Khari Muhammad, la Coordinadora Principal del Programa de Detección de Plomo en el Departamento de Salud del Condado de Douglas, al hablar de los síntomas que los niños en Omaha están experimentando debido a la intoxicación de plomo.

Muhammad añade “el plomo se llama el peligro silencioso. Algunos de los niños no son más reservados en vez se vuelven más agresivos,” dice McCracken, añadiendo “su coeficiente intelectual es, sin duda afectada, es por eso que se aconseja que se examinen a los niños de edad 1-6 o 7 años de edad. De 1-5 años de edad, su cerebro se está desarrollando. Cuando los niños son contaminados sus cerebros son afectados y ellos no se pueden desarrollar a tiempo adecuado.

En los últimos tres años, los miembros del Programa de Detección de Plomo han examinado a más de 17.000 niños. El objetivo del equipo es aumentar esos números en un 5 por ciento a través de uno de sus inspecciones. El programa ofrece primeras inspecciones en las viviendas, las inspecciones de denuncia, inspecciones de cortesía y re-inspecciones.

Muhammad dice que el proceso es relativamente fácil y rápido y familias de la zona no deben dudar en ponerse en contacto. e get reports of children in first grade that can’t write their name, can’t recite their ABC’s, are very aggressive, it is just detrimental. I can’t emphasize that enough, it is just devastating for children,” says Khari Muhammad, the Lead Program Coordinator for the Screening Program at Douglas County Health Department, when speaking about the symptoms children in Omaha are experiencing because of lead poisoning.

Muhammad adds “Lead is called the silent injurer. There are no immediate symptoms so all parents can really do is look into the conditions of their home.”

According to Muhammad chipping paint in homes built before 1978 should be a concern for families in Douglas County, “they stopped using lead based paint after 1978,” says Muhammad.

Muhammad, who has been with the Douglas County Health Department Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program since 2006 works with families from all backgrounds. She and other team members currently focus on community outreach to get as many families as they can informed about the harmful effects lead poisoning can have on children in the area.

Naudia McCracken, the Lead Program Coordinator for the Interior Dust Program points out that families need to be concerned about chipping paint as well as contaminated soil. McCracken’s Interior Dust Program issues free HEPA filter vacuums to qualifying families so they can address lead dust in homes.

“Lead affects social behavior, children are withdrawn and don’t communicate effectively. Some of the children don’t become more withdrawn and instead they become more aggressive,” says McCracken, adding “your IQ is definitely affected, that is why we advise screening for children 1-6 or 7 years of age. From 1-5 years of age your brain is developing. When you get lead poisoning you are slowing down the growth of the brain so that is how you get all of these developmental delays.”

Over the last three years members of the Childhood Lead Poisoing Prevention Program have tested over 17,000 children. The goal of the team is to increase those numbers by 5 percent through one of their many inspections. The program offers first inspections for homes, complaint inspections, courtesy inspections and re-inspections.

Muhammad says that the process is relatively quick and easy and families in the area shouldn’t hesitate to get in touch. When a family makes a report the parents are asked to take their children to University of Nebraska Medical Center to get tested. “They can go and take their children to UNMC and have their children tested for free, anyone under the age of 7 can get tested for free,” says Muhammad.

After the blood lead level has been confirmed the team schedules an appointment to inspect the home. While a time member inspects the home another member of the staff educates the family about the dangers of lead poisoning.

“Members of the community shouldn’t be afraid to contact us,” says Muhammad, adding “we have a passion for working with families.”

Muhammad and her team emphasize the fact that getting an inspection and getting children in the area is critical because Omaha is one of the nation’s largest super fund sites. A super fund site is a designated area that has been contaminated with hazardous substances and pollutants. “Super fund sites are sites where you don’t live because they are so contaminated, I think this is one of the only super fund sites where people actually still live,” says Muhammad, adding “everything east of 72nd has contaminated soil.”

Muhammad says “A lot of times families do not understand the seriousness of lead poisoning and truly how it can affect your child’s life, your future, and everything.” Anita Whitney, the Community Health Worker for the family adds “we are trying to get information to parents so they are more aware of what to look for in their homes to keep their children from getting lead poisoning.”

VOTE “REPEAL” O “RETAIN” SOBRE LA PENA DE MUERTE EN NE

a celebración del Día de los Muertos ha penetrado el suelo americano y cada vez son más los Latinos que dejan el luto y la nostalgia para lograr una conexión espiritual con los seres queridos que han partido al más haya, de donde regresan los días 1 y 2 de noviembre, fieles a dicha creencia popular que engloba diversos aspectos en su “aculturación en los Estados Unidos”.

Omaha se ha engrandecido con una comunidad inmigrante que actualmente expone una fuerte presencia Latina, por consiguiente, sus tradiciones paulatinamente van formando parte de las efemérides, como en el caso de El Día de los Muertos.

“Este es festejo que ya no es tan tenebroso ni causa el miedo o asombro de hace unos años, pero que si requiere que se siga dando a conocer para apreciar su belleza”, expreso David McConkie, sociólogo, investigador y profesor de lenguas modernas y literatura.

Adentrándose en dicho comentario, José García, de la Sociedad Histórica Mexico-Americana del Midlands, dijo que la muerte esta muy satanizada en la comunidad anglosajona, sin embargo, “hemos podido exponerles el significado de la capacidad de celebrar a la muerte, generándoles sorpresa y deseos de conocer más sobre este hecho ancestral que sirve como puente entre vivos y muertos; sin que se confunda o mezcle con los actos en torno al Halloween”.

Históricamente, el Día de Muertos tiene su origen en las civilizaciones precolombinas y son una mezcla del resultado del encuentro entre estos pueblos y los españoles.

Actualmente, resulta irónico imaginar lo tétrico de chuparse una “calaverita de azúcar” con el nombre grabado de algún ser querido, vivo o muerto. Como también es extraño servir los alimentos favoritos del ser fallecido, con la seguridad de que vendrá la noche esperada a consumirlos.

Sin embargo, para los mexicanos y latinoamericanos esto está jovialmente arraigado, y abarca el ámbito educativo, político, literario, artístico, social, comercial y religioso.

“Este no es un ritual a la muerte, sino una manera de reconectarse con los seres queridos fallecidos, para celebrar su vida en la tierra y todo aquello que nos hallan trasmitido”, expuso la Pastora Liz Conner, de la iglesia luterana Cristo Rey, cuya celebración es marcada para el 10 de noviembre, llamada ‘el Día de Todos los Santos’.

“Hay que aclarar que aquellos que le rezan a la santa muerte sí están realizando un acto fuera de contexto bíblico y no está relacionado con la tradición del Día de Muertos”, agregó.

Aquí, el departamento de policía indicó que algunas pandillas se valen de un culto equivocado a la muerte para ejecutar actos delictivos, no solo en las fechas indicadas, logrando que aquellos adolescentes que buscan una identidad cultural y una aceptación social, acaben reclutados en dichos grupos que solo distorsionan lo cultural del festejo, convirtiéndolo en una bandera delictiva.

Para esto, el departamento de pandillas trabaja arduamente para informar y prevenir estos hechos que no solo afectan a los Latinos, según informo el jefe del Departamento de Pandillas en el condado de Douglas, Mike Jones.

En el terreno educativo, este ha servido de pretexto para ejemplificar la riqueza de los pueblos Latinoamericanos, aunado a contribuir en la inspiración de artistas en diversos ámbitos que en este entorno realizan sus obras.

Aquí sobre salen las coreografías folclóricas presentadas localmente por el maestro Héctor Moreno, director artístico del ballet Xiotal y Nayare, al igual que las obras plásticas del artista visual Mike Girón.

Comercialmente brinda una herramienta de mercadotecnia que bien aprovechada incrementa los ingresos comerciales.

Sobre esto, Georgina Núñez, consejera de negocios, señalo: “Dado que el 98% de la comunidad Hispana es mexicana, resulta normal que busquen una extensión de su cultura en el terreno comercial y esto es algo válido que permite traer a Omaha los recursos y productos relacionados con esa fecha, cubriendo una necesidad para el consumidor que en dichos productos también recuerda su tierra y sus costumbres.

De manera contraria, el locutor de Radio Luz, Pastor Alex Núñez, explicó que a través de la historia la mercadotecnia, los medios de comunicación y la propia sociedad consumista aprovecha cualquier fecha para vender sus productos, sin importar el tipo de festividad.

“Como comunicador creo que el Día de Muertos no es una fecha adecuada para comercializarla, porque engloba un profundo significado histórico y podríamos valernos de otros medios para las ventas. Sin embargo, la falta de conocimiento nos hace caer en el consumismo”, puntualizó.

Al mismo tiempo, dejó en claro que "como persona temerosa de las verdades bíblicas, y al igual que mi familia, no comparto estas fechas pero so respeto las mismas, sin importar si se celebra o no de la manera más adecuada”.

Ya en este terreno, Magdalena García, directora del Museo Latino, indicó que no existe una manera correcta para celebrar estas fechas, pues cada rincón de Latinoamérica brinda diversas variantes.

“En el museo tratamos de retomar algunas de las muchas tradiciones en torno a esta celebración, e incluso nos valemos de videos y otros materiales interactivos que abarcan múltiples lugares”, dijo.

También rememoró que en 1993 presentó la primera ofrenda del Día de Muertos, corroborando el miedo y rechazo que había en la comunidad de aquel entonces. Pero con arduo trabajo educativo se ha ido erradicando dicha reacción que hoy incluso permite recibir la visita de grupos de estudiantes de diversos grados escolares, entre otros sectores de la población que aprender el modo prehispánico de ver la vida a partir de la muerte.

“Afortunadamente, gradualmente en Omaha es más común encontrar algo alusivo a esta celebración, como en el caso del pan de muerto, que no puede faltar en las ofrendas, como la que anualmente exponemos”, concluyo la museógrafa.

Finalmente, el cónsul mexicano, Jorge Espejel Montes, puntualizó que lo importante de esta fecha es la oportunidad de lograr mantener una identidad cultural necesaria en todo individuo.

De esta forma, si bien es verdad que en el proceso de aculturación se van generando nuevas variantes de festejo populares, también es un hecho que el caso del Día de los Muertos la esencia sigue siendo la misma: celebrar vivos y muertos un encuentro sátiro y místico, que en definitiva forma parte del alma colectiva de una comunidad inmigrante.

En estas elecciones de noviembre, los residentes de Nebraska decidirán RETENER la solución partidista de remplazar la Pena de Muerte con la Cadena Perpetua sin opción a Libertad Condicional, o REVOCAR y traer de nuevo la pena de muerte a Nebraska.

El Referendum del Veto para mantener la Pena de Muerte en Nebraska, también conocida como Referendum 426, se encuentra en la boleta electoral de noviembre.

La medida pide a los electores si quieren revocar o mantener la ley que elimina la pena de muerte en Nebraska.

Al votar “Repeal”, significa estar a favor de la pena de muerte y en contra de la ley legislativa que fue aprobada en mayo del 2015 que remueve la pena de muerte en Nebraska y la sustituye con cadena perpetua sin opción a libertad condicional.

Al votar “Retain”, significa estar en contra de la pena de muerte y a favor de sustituirla con la cadena perpetua sin opción a libertad condicional, para mantener la ley de Nebraska sin la pena de muerte.

La legislatura de Nebraska votó en mayo del 2015 para remplazar la pena de muerte con la cadena perpetua sin opción a libertad condicional, con 16 votos republicanos, 13 votos democráticos y un voto independiente. Después de varios estudios y 20 años sin ninguna ejecución, los legisladores concluyeron que el sistema de la pena de muerte no era el adecuado para Nebraska.

Unos días después, los legisladores volvieron a votar 30-19 para invalidar el veto del Gobernador Pete Ricketts y abolir la pena de muerte. En represalia, el gobernador lanzó una exitosa campaña de referéndum para que fueran los electores quienes decidieran si están a favor o en contra de la pena de muerte en Nebraska.

he Day of the Dead celebration has found a home in the United States and every day more Latinos leave the grieving and nostalgia behind to find a spiritual connection with their loved ones who have passed away. They all return during the 1st and 2nd of November, always faithful to the popular belief that encompasses many aspects of their "acculturation in the United States."

Omaha has grown thanks to an immigrant community that currently showcases a strong Latino presence. This is why the city's big celebrations slowly incorporate new traditions from its members, and such is the case of the Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos).

“This celebration is not as scary nor shocking as it seemed some years ago, but it does need to be showcased to be able to appreciate its beauty," said David McConkie, sociologist, researcher, and professor of literature and modern languages.

Jose Garcia, of the Mexican American Historical Society of the Midlands, said death had been demonized by other communities in the United States. However, "we have been able to present to them the meaning of being able to celebrate death, generating a bit of surprise and curiosity on their end so they want to learn more about this ancient tradition that serves as a bridge between the living and the death - something that should not be confused or mixed with what happens around Halloween.

The Day of the Death originated in pre-Columbian civilizations and is a mix of the outcome of the meeting of said pueblos and the Spanish.

Nowadays it is a bit ironic to picture how grim it is to suck on a "sugar skull" with the name of a dead or alive, loved one. Serving the favorite meals of the dead with the hope that they will visit during the night to eat them might also seem a bit strange.

However, for Mexican and Latin Americans individuals this is part of their culture, deeply rooted in every aspect of their life - educational, political, literary, artistic, social, commercial and religious lives.

“This is not a ritual for death, but a way to reconnect with loved ones who have passed away, so that we can celebrate their life on earth and everything they gave us," said Priest Liz Conner of Cristo Rey Lutheran Church, which has a celebration set for November 10 called "All Saints Day." “We must mention that the people who pray to the Santa Muerte are participating in an act that is outside of the Biblical context, and that said actions are not related to the Day of the Dead tradition," she mentioned.

The police department stated that some gangs use a the wrongful worshiping of death to commit crimes, not only during dates close to the Day of the Dead but also during the rest of the year, and this means that some teenagers who are searching for an identity and to be accepted end up being recruited into said, groups, that only damage the cultural festivity of the Day of the Dead.

This is why the Gang Unit of the Omaha Police Department is constantly hard at work to inform about and prevent these acts that, according to Douglas County Department Chief Mike Jones, does not only affect Latinos.

The Day of the Dead has helped to ser ve as a way to showcase the cultural richness of Latino communities. On top of that, it has ser ved as inspiration for many artists that base their work on this celebration.

Examples of these are the folkloric choreographies presented in the city by Hector Moreno, artistic director for the Xiotal and Nayare ballet, or the plastic art of visual artist Mike Giron.

It also serves as a marketing tool for businesses to increase their sales and income. On that note, Georgina Nuñez, business adviser, stated: “Given that 98% of the Latino community is Mexican, it is normal that they seek a way to extend their culture to the business aide of things and this is a valid tactic that allows them to bring to Omaha the resources and products related to this celebration, thus covering consumers' need for said products that also remind them of their home country and their traditions."

On the other side of the spectrum, we have Pasto Alex Nuñez, a radio announcer at Radio Luz, who explained that in the history of marketing, media and the consumerist society take advantage of any special date that can help them sell their products, without caring about the festivities.

“As a communicator, I believe that the Day of the Dead is not a proper event to be commercialized since it has a profound historical significance and we should use other tactics for selling products. However, a lack of knowledge and understanding makes us fall into consumerism."

At the same time, he made it clear that "as someone who respects the contents of the Bible, as does my whole family, I do not partake in these celebrations but I do respect them, whether they are celebrated properly or not."

Magdalena Garcia, director of El Museo Latino, said that there is no right way to celebrate the Day of the Dead because each part of Latin America introduces several variants of this event.

“At the museum, we try to use some of the many traditions surrounding the Day of the Dead, and we even use videos and interactive media from many locations," she said.

She also remembered how back in 1993 the first Day of the Dead offering was presented in the city, corroborating the fear and rejection in the community from back in the day. But with a lot of hard work said reaction has been eradicated. This is why nowadays they are visited by many groups of students from all school grades who want to learn about the Pre-Hispanic way of seeing life from death.

“Luckily, it is now more common to find in Omaha items allusive to this celebration, such as the 'Pan de Muertos' that is always part of the offerings, like the one we have on display every year," concluded the museographer.

Mexican Consul Jorge Espejel Montes emphasized how this is a very important date since it is an opportunity for people to maintain their cultural identity.

Even though during the acculturation process new variations for popular celebrations come to life, it's also a fact that the essence of the Day of the Dead remains the same: to celebrate the living and the dead in a satirical and mystical event that is part of the collective soul of the immigrant community.

VOTE REPEAL OR RETAIN ON THE DEATH PENALTY IN NE

This November election, Nebraskan voters will decide to RETAIN the bipartisan solution to replace the death penalty with mandatory life without parole or REPEAL to bring back the death penalty to Nebraska.

The Nebraska Death Penalty Repeal Veto Referendum, also known as Referendum 426, is on the November 8 ballot in Nebraska as a veto referendum.

The measure asks voters whether they want to repeal or maintain a law that eliminated the death penalty in Nebraska.

A "repeal" vote for the measure supports reinstating the death penalty in the state by repealing Legislative Bill that banned the death penalty.

Supporters of a "repeal" vote want to repeal LB 268, the legislation passed in May 2015 that banned the death penalty in the state.

A “retain” vote for the measure supports retaining and upholding the ban on the death penalty.

Supporters of a "retain" vote, want to maintain the law, which changed the maximum penalty for firstdegree murder to life in prison.

The Nebraska unicameral voted in May 2015, to replace the death penalty with mandatory life imprisonment without parole, with the votes of 16 Republicans, 13 Democrats, and 1 Independent.

After years of study, and 20 years without an execution, they concluded that death penalty system in Nebraska did not work.

A few days later, the Nebraska legislature voted 30-19 to override the veto of Governor Pete Ricketts and abolish the death penalty. The Governor, in turn, launched a successful petition drive to place the repeal issue on the ballot.

Aún así, el equipo cuenta ahora con 20 jugadoras. Hay algunas de Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador y México.

“Estábamos felices de ver jugar a nuestros maridos, pero llegó un momento en que nos sentimos aburridas”, afirmó.

En su primer partido bajo techo hace dos años, Latinas perdió nada menos que por 17-0. Sólo consiguieron una victoria después de 1 año, hasta incluso obtener un segundo lugar en la pasada temporada de verano en Council Bluff.

Hace un par de años, Escobar y un grupo de hispanas decidieron actuar. Vieron a mujeres que jugaban fútbol en una liga femenil de Sur Omaha, y se les encendió la lamparita.

“Nos conformábamos con tener la pelota y jugar porque nuestra meta es divertirnos y mantenernos en forma, si ganamos es un beneficio adicional”, dijo María.

“Pensamos que si ellas lo hacían, ¿por qué no hacerlo nosotras también?”

De acuerdo con su entrenador, Demian Arriaga, “Algunas barreras que debe derribar una mujer para jugar al fútbol son: falta de tiempo, miedo, negativas en casa, rechazos en los clubes, falta de presupuesto y discriminación.

Sin embargo, la posibilidad de acceder a este deporte es también la posibilidad de cambiar el rol que debe representar la mujer en la sociedad, en el hogar y en la cultura. Por lo pronto, Latinas Guerreras están haciendo su parte…”

Así fue como se creó el equipo de fútbol Latinas Guerreras. Ahí, la mayoría de las jugadoras están casadas y tienen hijos.

“Cuando le dije a mi padre que iba a jugar fútbol, su respuesta airada fue ‘Eso es para hombres’”, dijo María, de 30 años, agregando: “Mucha gente se asombra de que hagamos esto estando casadas y con hijos, pero aparte de distraernos nos ayuda física y mentalmente”.

El año pasado el grupo perdió varias jugadoras por maternidad, lesiones y desacuerdos, agregó.

Hoy se pueden encontrar cada vez más mujeres que juegan al fútbol y un buen es María de la Luz y su equipo Guerreras Latinas, cuyas actividades en Omaha se siguen pregonando cada vez más, logrando un mayor número de jugadoras que gustan del balompié local.
