PROGRAMA OPS fortalece a los jóvenes líderes latinos HISTORIA Y FOTOGRAFÍA POR SALVADOR S. ROBLES

L

a mayoría de los estudiantes de preparatoria normalmente no se encuentran dentro de algún programa después del horario de escuela, mismos que duran toda la tarde. Pero para Luis Salazar Chávez y Lizbeth Palmerín, el Grassroots Leadership Development Program (Programa de Desarrollo de Liderazgo Comunitario - GDLP) es algo por lo que esperan cada semana.

“Me encanta venir una vez a la semana y poder conocer a jóvenes latinos que están buscando cómo hacer una diferencia en nuestra comunidad”, comentó Chávez. “Me motiva aún más para graduarme, buscar un grado en arquitectura y encontrar la forma de ayudar a los demás”.

“Siento que cada vez que vengo aquí estoy creciendo como persona”, comentó Palmerín. “Estoy aprendiendo cómo funciona el gobierno de mi comunidad y cómo puedo tener un rol activo”.

Chávez y Palmerín son dos estudiantes de un grupo de 135 jóvenes latinos en el Distrito de Omaha Public School (OPS) que participan en el GDLP. El programa funciona como una forma de desarrollar a los jóvenes líderes latinos en la comunidad al educarles a través de un programa de nueve semanas. El programa está dividido en tres partes: educar a los estudiantes sobre su distrito escolar, sobre su ciudad y sobre su condado.

“Nuestro grupo de estudiantes es grande este año”, mencionó Toni Hernández, facilitador con OPS y el GDLP. “Es muy bueno ver cómo tantos estudiantes de todo el distrito están aprovechando este programa de liderazgo latino”.

El GDLP ha sido ofrecido a los estudiantes del OPS durante los últimos ocho años, pero la historia del programa ha estado ligada a los latinos en la comunidad desde hace tiempo. El GDLP fue diseñado por el United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) y fue llevado a Omaha por Bob Campos, un comerciante local, hace 26 años.

El programa inicialmente fue ofrecido solamente a miembros profesionistas en la comunidad y no incluía a estudiantes de preparatoria. Pero en el 2008, el Consejo de Logros Académicos Latinos en Omaha decidió implementar y ofrecer el GDLP a los estudiantes de preparatoria del OPS. “El distrito espera apoyar el desarrollo de los estudiantes de preparatoria al ayudarles a hacer un plan para su educación después de este nivel escolar”, mencionó Susan Mayberger, coordinadora del GDLP. “Estos estudiantes están aprendiendo sobre el gobierno a nivel escolar, municipal y en el condado y sentimos que les estamos brindando las herramientas necesarias para estar más capacitados, para ser líderes en la comunidad y para que ojala puedan en su momento hacerse cargo de las cosas”.

Tanto Hernández como Mayberger son miembros del Consejo de Logros Académicos Latinos cuyas funciones incluyen ayudar a disminuir la brecha académica entre los latinos. La planeación para la universidad y una debida preparación en la escuela y en los lugares de trabajo han sido incorporadas en el GDLP para poder atender de mejor forma a los estudiantes de preparatoria.

“Como estamos aprendiendo cómo prepararnos para la universidad, yo estoy revisando la posibilidad de asistir a una universidad fuera de Omaha para regresar y poder hacer una diferencia en mi hogar”, mencionó Chávez.

El programa de nueve semanas se apoya en gran parte en los diversos miembros y líderes de la comunidad que participan para educar a los estudiantes en

El consejero municipal Gary Gernandt habló con el grupo sobre mantener un rol activo en su ciudad.

“Hice ver a los estudiantes cómo deben aprovechar, escuchar y aprender de lo que está sucediendo en su comunidad para poder convertirse en líderes”, comenta Gernandt. “El GDLP ha hecho ver a los estudiantes que ahora participan en el programa y a aquellos que se han graduado que deben aprovechar lo aprendido para que ello les beneficie en el futuro”.

Desde que el GDLP comenzó a enfocarse en los estudiantes de preparatoria, ha logrado crecer y cambiar durante los últimos ocho años: “Cuando comenzamos, teníamos 56 estudiantes latinos de último grado de todo el distrito con un requisito de un promedio de 3.0”, comenta Hernández. “La demanda de estudiantes que desean ser parte del programa ahora es

mayor lo cual es fenomenal, pero ello nos ha llevado a tomar la decisión de aumentar los requisitos para los estudiantes que desean participar en el programa”.

A los estudiantes se les pide contar con un promedio de 3.5, que escriban un ensayo sobre por qué desean participar en el GDLP, que completen un proyecto de 10 horas de servicio comunitario aprobado por los coordinadores del GDLP y que se comprometan a asistir a todas las sesiones durante las nueve semanas del programa. Aunque sí hay un incentivo en particular que motiva a los estudiantes: un viaje en febrero con todos los gastos pagados para asistir a la conferencia USHLI en Chicago.

“Espero con ansias la conferencia en Chicago pues habrá varios talleres y podré conectar con otros jóvenes latinos”, dijo Chávez. “Sí, las conexiones son una parte importante de la vida, pero dar algo de vuelta a tu comunidad con trabajo como voluntario, al promover tu cultura de una forma positiva, eso es lo que hace a un líder y es lo que yo quiero ser”.

M

ost high school students don’t usually find themselves in afterschool programs which happen to take up most of their evening.

But for Luis Salazar Chavez and Lizbeth Palmerin, the Grassroots Leadership Development Program (GDLP) is something they look forward to every week.

“I love coming here once a week and being able to meet young Latinos who are looking to make a difference in our community,” Chavez says. “It’s driving me even more to graduate, pursue a degree in architecture and then find a way to help others.”

“I feel like I am growing as an individual every time I come here,” Palmerin says.

“I am actually learning how my community government functions and how I can have an active role.”

Chavez and Palmerin are just two students who make up a group of 135 Latino high school juniors from across the Omaha Public School District (OPS) who participate in the GDLP. The program itself functions as a way to develop young Latino leaders in communities by educating them through a nine-week curriculum. The program is divided up into three parts; educating students on their school district, city and county.

“Our student cohort this year is quite large,” says Toni Hernandez, a facilitator with OPS and the GDLP. “It’s great to see how many students all across the district are taking advantage of this Latino leadership program.”

The GDLP has been offered to OPS students for the past eight years, but the program’s history has been tied to Latinos in the community for quite some time. The GDLP was designed by the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) and was brought to Omaha by local businessman, Bob Campos 26 years ago.

The program was initially offered to professional community members only and didn’t include high school students, but in 2008 the Latino Academic Achievement Council of Omaha decided to incorporate and offer the GDLP to OPS high school students.

“The district hopes to support the development of high school students by helping them make a plan for post-secondary education,” GDLP coordinator, Susan Mayberger says. “These students are learning about school government, city and county government and we feel we are giving them the tools to be knowledgeable, to be leaders in the community and to hopefully take over down the road.”

Both Hernandez and Mayberger are members of the Latino Academic Achievement Council which functions in helping close the achievement gap among Latinos.

College planning and successful preparation in school and the work place have been incorporated into the GDLP to better cater to high school students.

“Because we are learning how to prepare for college, I am looking at attending a university outside of Omaha but then come back so I can make a difference here at home,” Chavez says.

Currently the group is on its sixth session and is focusing on how city council works while also managing city legislation. City Councilmen Gary Gernandt spoke to the group on maintaining an active role in their city.

“I couldn’t encourage more to these students to take advantage, listen and learn about what’s going on in their community and then becoming a leaders.” Gernandt says. “The GDLP has offered a number of students who are participating now in the program and who have graduated, to take something away that will benefit them in the future.”

Since the GDLP first started catering to high school students it has grown and has changed over the past eight years. “When we first started, we had 56 Latino seniors from around the district with a requirement of

a 3.0 GPA,” Hernandez says. “Many students now are wanting to join the program, which is great but we decided to increase requirements if a student wants to participate in the program.”

Students are required now to have a 3.5 GPA, write an essay of why they want to participate in the GDLP, complete a 10-hour community service project that is approved by the GDLP coordinators and commit to attending all of the 9-week sessions. An incentive does drive the students, an all expense paid trip in February to the USHLI conference in Chicago.

“I am looking forward to the conference in Chicago where there will be workshops and I will be able to connect with other young Latinos,” Chavez says. “Yes, connections are an important part of life, but giving back to your community through volunteering, uplifting your culture in a positive way, that encompasses a leader, and that’s what I want to be.”

La Comisión desea agradecer a los muchos voluntarios y organizaciones comunitarias que registraron a los votantes, educaron a los votantes en el proceso electoral y ayudaron a estos votantes el 8 de noviembre. Hubo un número récord de votantes latino para este ciclo electoral y no podría haber sido logrado sin que la comunidad se uniera para ayudarse mutuamente.

La elección presidencial es el mayor ejemplo de democracia, e independientemente del resultado, todos deben estar orgullosos de participar en ella y ejercer el derecho de voto. Sólo tenga en cuenta que aquellos que luchan por sus derechos lo han hecho antes de la elección y continuarán después. No estas solo. A medida que se desarrollen los eventos, mantendremos un ojo vigilante sobre las amenazas potenciales y el trato injusto a la Comunidad Latina.

El presidente Obama permanecerá en el cargo hasta enero de 2017, y habrá una mejor comprensión del futuro para entonces. Mientras tanto, estamos aquí para servirle, si desea ponerse en contacto con nosotros para información, para compartir sus preocupaciones, o simplemente para hablar; Usted es bienvenido a hacerlo. The Commission would like to thank the many volunteers and community organizations who registered voters, educated voters on the election process and helped these voters on Nov. 8th. There was a record number of Latino engagement for this election cycle and it could not have been accomplished without the community coming together to help each other.

The Presidential Election is the greatest example of democracy, and regardless of the outcome, everyone should be proud for participating in it and exercising the right to vote. Just keep in mind that those who are fighting for your rights have done so before the election and will continue afterward. You are not alone. As events unfold we will keep a watchful eye on potential threats and unjust treatment to the Latino Community.

President Obama will remain in office until January 2017, we will have a better understanding of the future by then. In the meantime, we are here to serve you, if you would like to contact us for information, to share your concerns, or just to talk; you are welcome to do so. We will take these concerns and discussions to the legislature, just as we have since 1972.

In addition, there are many organizations, groups, and community leaders around the state who are here to help you as well. Organizations such as Centro Hispano in Columbus, Unity in Action in South Sioux City, Hastings Multicultural Association, and the many in Omaha: Heartland Workers Center, Latino Center of the Midlands, Maya Ixim,

If you have never spoken to them now, but would like to, they are all already ready with open arms.

"A

los hispanos nos gusta comer mucho, desafortunadamente una dieta no muy sana y eso hace que nuestros niños presenten una tendencia al sobrepeso", expresó la Dra. Cristina Fernández, Directora del Programa HEROES del Children's Hospital & Medical Center.

Durante su horario de consulta como pediatra en la clínica Children's Physicians ella atiende con esmero a quienes pese a su corta edad, ya padecen las consecuencias de la obesidad: "Tenemos niños que pesan 400 libras y muchos de ellos son pacientes que ya tienen problemas del corazón y la presión alta".

La situación es alarmante porque según la Dra. Fernández, en nuestra sociedad, "el problema de la obesidad infantil representa a casi el 20% de la población total", pero en el caso de los niños hispanos, "esta cifra puede aumentar hasta el 26%".

Eso quiere decir que en la comunidad hispana "uno de cada cuatro niños está en sobrepeso o es obeso", lo cual es un asunto serio porque como bien dijo Fernández, la obesidad a largo plazo afecta incluso la capacidad cognitiva de los pequeños lo cual se refleja directamente en su rendimiento escolar.

Egresada de la Universidad Libre en la ciudad de Cali, en su natal Colombia, la reconocida Dra. Fernández lleva 12 años estudiando en Omaha el desarrollo de sus queridos pacientes: "Observándolos crecer y madurar, prácticamente desde que nacen hasta que entran a la universidad".

Gracias a su labor como Profesora de Pediatría de la Universidad de Creighton, Fernández logra que sus alumnos comprendan que su importante misión tiene implícita la tarea de promover no sólo la salud de los hijos, sino también de sus padres: "Cuando estoy enseñando a los estudiantes y residentes de pediatría, les hago ver que cuando somos médicos y estamos curando las enfermedades de nuestros pacientes, no solamente estamos cuidando una infección de oído o una diarrea, sino que estamos trabajando con las familias completas".

Con tal enfoque, desde hace cuatro años la Dra. Fernández ayuda a los niños y niñas que forman parte del Programa HEROES: "Somos un grupo de siete personas que trabajamos tratando de hacerles entender a las familias cómo podemos llevar una vida mejor, de una manera fácil".

Fernández, quien está en contra de las llamadas "súper dietas" que prometen resultados milagrosos rápidamente, reconoció que papá y mamá son responsables de hacer cambios en el hogar para apoyar a sus hijos a perder peso: "Como padres hispanos estamos acostumbrados a las porciones grandísimas y los vegetales no fueron nuestros 'mejores amigos' cuando estábamos creciendo, pero podemos hacer cosas sencillas como comprar platos más pequeños para así ir mermando las cantidades y alimentarnos con opciones de comidas más sanas. Es difícil, pero no imposible".

La pediatra agregó que la dietista que colabora con ella en HEROES, tiene un frase que dice que "todas las comidas son buenas, pero depende en la proporción y la frecuencia en que las comas".

Fernández igualmente recalcó que la cuestión cultural es un factor determinante en la dieta de los padres de familia hispanos que residen en Estados Unidos: "Porque quienes venimos de un país del tercer mundo traemos la creencia de que si puede comer un poquito más, es mejor. O que si vamos a la tienda y hay algo que sea barato y nos den el doble, vale más la pena sin importar su calidad".

Ella añadió que además entre las mamás y abuelas hispanas es común escuchar que "un niño gordito siempre es un niño sano". Pero lo cierto es que los niños con sobrepeso sufren de maltrato social, mismo que inicia con el bullying del que son víctimas en los salones de clase: "Hay gente que les tira comida cuando están almorzando en la escuela, y les dicen 'estamos tirando comida para los elefantes'. Les pegan y los maltratan".

Al respecto Fernández mencionó que la literatura médica demostró hace tiempo que la discriminación inicia desde el kínder, cuando los pequeños prefieren jugar con niños con limitaciones físicas o mentales, ignorando a quienes están gordos.

De ahí la preocupación de la especialista quien recibe hasta 200 referencias mensuales de otros colegas que le envían a sus pacientes para formar parte de HEROES: "Al comenzar les hacemos un test de su calidad de vida y al cabo de seis meses nos damos cuenta de que ésta mejora en el 99% de los casos".

En HEROES el ejercicio es fundamental y para realizarlo cuentan con el apoyo del Kroc Center que destinó un área especial a sus pacientes y la clave del éxito del programa, como subrayó Fernández, consiste en dejarle saber a los niños con sobrepeso que "éste no sólo es tu problema ¡y vamos a trabajar juntos para salir adelante!".

POST-ELECTION MESSAGE FROM JFON-NE

"W

e Latinos like to eat a lot. Unfortunately, we don't have a healthy diet, and that makes our kids have a tendency to become overweight," said Dr. Cristina Fernandez, Director of the HEROES program at the Children's Hospital & Medical Center.

During her consultation hours as a pediatrician at the Children's Physicians Clinic, she works hard to help kids who, despite being so young, already suffer from the consequences of being overweight: "We have kids who weigh 400 pounds, and several of our patients already suffer from heart problems and high pressure." This is a very worrying situation because, according to Dr. Fernandez, in our society "child obesity is a problem that affects almost 20 percent of that total population," but for Latino kids, "that number can go as high as 26 percent."

This means that in the Latino community "one in every four kids is overweight or obese," which is a serious issue because, as Fernandez said, in the long term obesity can affect the cognitive ability of little kids which might end up being reflected in their school performance.

A graduate from the Universidad Libre in Cali in her native Colombia, the renowned Dr. Fernandez has been studying the development of her loved ones in Omaha for over 12 years: "Watching them grow and mature, pretty much from the moment they're born all the way to when they enter college."

Thanks to her work as professor of pediatrics at Creighton University, Fernandez makes it possible for her students to understand how important their mission is since it implies a task to look after not only the health of children, but of their parents as well. “When I’m teaching pediatrics students and residents, I let them see that when we are doctors, and we are healing the illness of our patients, we’re not only taking care of an ear infection or diarrhea, we are working with the whole family.”

With this focus, over the last four years, Dr. Fernandez has helped boys and girls who are part of the HEROES program. “We are a group of seven people who work to try and make families understand how we can all lead a better life in a very easy way.”

Fernandez, who is against the so-called “super diets” that promise quick and miraculous results, acknowledged that mom and dad are the ones responsible for making changes at home in order to help their kids lose weight. “As Latino parents, we are used to eating large portions, and vegetables certainly were not our ‘best friends’ when we were growing up, but we can do simple things such as buying smaller plates so that we can lower the amount of food we eat, and we can also pick healthier food. It’s hard, but it’s not impossible.”

The pediatrician added that the dietitian that collaborates with her at HEROES has a saying that goes “All foods are good, but it all depends on the size of each serving and how often you eat them.”

Fernandez also emphasized how culture plays a significant role in setting the diet of Latino parents who live in the United States: “Because those of us who come from a Third World country believe that if we can eat a bit more, it’s for the best. Or that if we go to the store and there’s something that is cheaper, and they give us twice as much product, then it’s worth it even if its quality is not so good.”

She mentioned how among Latino mothers and grandmothers there is a saying that goes “a chubby kid is a healthy kid.” But the truth is that children who are overweight suffer from abuse and bullying at school. “There are people who throw food at them as they’re having lunch in school, and say things such as ‘we’re throwing food at the elephants.’ They’re also abused and beaten.”

Fernandez mentioned how medical literature showed a long time ago that discrimination starts in kindergarten when kids show they prefer to play with kids with physical or mental disabilities as they ignore overweight children.

This is why the specialist worries so much about the situation, and why every month she receives over 200 referrals from other colleagues who send her more patients that can become part of HEROES: “We first do a quality of life test, and after six months we find that around 99 percent show an improvement.”

At HEROES, exercising is a must, which is why they have the support of the Kroc Center which has established a special area for their patients. The key to the program’s success, highlighted Fernandez, is in letting overweight kids know that “this isn’t only their problem, and that we’ll work together to make things better!”

l fútbol no es cuestión de privilegios, sino de derechos. Según acreditó la Convención sobre los Derechos del Niño, el fútbol es un lenguaje universal de millones de personas en todo el mundo, incluidos niños, niñas y adolescentes, independientemente de su lugar de origen, idioma que hablen o religión a la que pertenezcan.

El fútbol es el deporte más popular del mundo. En muchas lugares, como Europa o Sudamérica, el fútbol es mucho más que un juego, es un estilo de vida. Cada vez son más los niños que se apuntan a escuelas de fútbol con el objetivo y el sueño de convertirse en un astro del llamado ‘deporte rey’. La afición es cada día más grande y las niñas ya han conquistando espacios importantes en esta disciplina.

Así lo confirmamos en el pasado encuentro en las canchas de la 33 y Q, donde se llevo realizó un amistoso entre niños y niñas del club evolución. Ahí, contendieron 6 equipos en una misma categoría, que poco a poco se fueron eliminando hasta lograr el partido final entre Evolution O y Evolution G. En las primeras etapas del juego, los niños demostraron una serie de condiciones ideales para entrenar la movilidad. A partir de los 5 años la mayoría de los niños ya están prepara-

dos para dar anotar en la portería rival, empatando el marcador a 3 tantos. Para la segunda mitad, las niñas de Evolution O adaptaron mejor los movimientos y alcanzaron mejor coordinación. Controlado, tocando balón y venciendo por 11 goles contra 5.

Tim Golween, directivo del club, homenajeo a todos los contendientes y hablo de los beneficios que genera este tipo de actividades en los niños.

“Incrementa la potencia muscular de las piernas, mejora la capacidad cardiovascular, oxigena la sangre, aporta un aumento de la densidad ósea a nivel del fémur, estimula la velocidad de reacción, la coordinación motora y la visión periférica… Definitivamente es un deporte completo y no es un deporte solo de hombre. El fútbol es para todos, sin importar edad”. dijo.

Además, el fútbol sociabiliza a los niños, les inculca el trabajo en equipo, el valor del compañerismo y la generosidad. Algunos padres presentes coincidieron que el fútbol es una buena herramienta para alejar a los más jóvenes de las tentaciones de las drogas, la violencia, y el alcohol, mostrando felices de ver que sus hijos están felices pateando el balón, sin importar quien sea el campeón.
