A continuación se presenta una contribución de Justicia para Nuestros Vecinos-Nebraska.

l 9 de noviembre de 2016, los Estados Unidos se despertó a la noticia que Donald Trump, un hombre cuya retórica anti-inmigrante sobrellevo su campaña, será el próximo Presidente de los Estados Unidos el día de la inauguración. Sus propuestas han incluido política de deportaciones en masa, el muro de la frontera, y el fin a pólizas compasivas y de sentido común, como el programa de la Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (“DACA”). Sin duda, esta noticia ha sido alarmante para miembros de la comunidad inmigrante y sus aliados. Aunque queda mucho por conocer acerca de lo que la Administración de Trump hará en realidad, estas son cuatro cosas que usted debe saber por ahora.

No entre en pánico, comprenda sus derechos, y no tenga miedo de hacerlos valer:

EDITOR’S NOTE: The recent presidential election raises many questions in the community. Below is a contribution from Justice for Our Neighbors-Nebraska.

n November 9, 2016, the United States awoke to learn that Donald Trump – a man whose harsh anti-immigrant rhetoric permeated the campaign – will be the next President of the United States on Inauguration Day. His policy proposals have included mass deportations, a border wall, and the end of compassionate, commonsense enforcement policies, like the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (“DACA”) program. This news has understandably shaken members of the immigrant community and their allies. While much remains unknown about what the Trump Administration will actually do, here are four things you should know for now:

Don’t panic, understand your rights, and don’t be afraid to assert them:

Regardless of who is in the White House, every person within the United States – whether documented or not – has certain rights under the U.S. Constitution.

Among those are: • Your right to remain silent, including when questioned about the country of your birth or your manner of entry into the United States; • Your right to consult with an attorney, which you should do before signing any immigration-related documents; and • Your right to be secure in your home from unreasonable searches, which includes your right to not open your door unless Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) presents a warrant signed by a judge.

If you have to deal with ICE, remember that you have rights and should assert them.

Know your options under the law:

Don’t make any hasty decisions. Rather, speak to a qualified immigration attorney or a Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) Accredited Representative to understand your options under the law. When seeking legal counsel, however, be careful not to get scammed

by bad attorneys, or non-attorney notaries who are not qualified to give legal advice.

If you do not have an attorney or representative and need assistance securing one, you can call the Nebraska Immigration Legal Assistance Hotline (NILAH) (1-855-307-6730) to seek immigration legal services from one of these agencies: Justice For Our Neighbors-Nebraska, Catholic Charities, the Center for Legal Immigration Assistance, Lutheran Family Services, or the Women’s Center for Advancement.

Everyone’s case is unique and it is important for you to know your rights and the benefits for which you may be eligible. For example, while the new administration has promised to end the DACA program, all DACA-eligible youth will have been present in the U.S. for ten years on June 15, 2017, and many have been present longer. This is significant because certain individuals who have been present in the U.S. for ten years and who have a U.S. citizen or permanent resident spouse, parent, or child will be able to assert a “cancellation of removal” defense if placed in removal proceedings. Similarly, those afraid of being harmed in their home country because of a protected characteristic may have other defenses available, such as asylum or withholding of removal. Likewise, abused, abandoned, or neglected minors; victims of trafficking or other serious crimes; and certain individuals with a U.S. citizen or permanent resident family member may have additional options.

These defenses exist in laws enacted by Congress; and the new administration cannot disregard these laws. If it does, such actions can and will be challenged in the courts by legal advocacy organizations.

At a minimum, we recommend that you: • Memorize your A-number, and the phone number of a trusted emergency contact and your attorney (if you have one); • Provide your child’s school with your emergency contact’s name and phone number, and authorize your emergency contact to pick up your child; and • Keep your identity documents, evidence of physical presence in the U.S., financial information, and any immigration-related documents in a secure location where your emergency contact can access them.

Lastly, while there is still a lot of uncertainly, one thing you should know for certain is that there are countless Americans – teachers, community organizers, business owners, faith leaders, lawyers, and others–who are standing with you. Our message at Justice for Our Neighbors - Nebraska is that you are not alone.

D

espués de una larga campaña presidencial caracterizada por una retórica divisiva, los resultados electorales del martes 8 de noviembre nos dejaron entristecidos y frustrados, pero sobre todo preocupados por el bienestar de nuestros estudiantes y de nuestra comunidad. Muchos de nuestros estudiantes pertenecen a grupos que fueron atacados y denigrados durante la campaña -inmigrantes, mexicanos/latinas/os, musulmanes, afroamericanos, LGBTQ, discapacitados, mujeres, veteranos, entre otros.

Como una institución urbana metropolitana con una población estudiantil creciente y diversa, creemos que es imperativo en este momento reiterar nuestro apoyo a nuestros estudiantes, así como a otros miembros de la comunidad que, en las secuelas de las elecciones, sienten que su educación, seguridad, protección y sus medios de subsistencia están ahora amenazados. En el transcurso de este par de semanas, los miembros de nuestra facultad han sido testigos de primera mano de cómo los estudiantes temen por lo que pueda venir en el futuro, por ellos y sus familias. También hemos tenido reportes de incidentes de amenaza hacia estudiantes y profesores dentro y fuera del campus universitario.

La Oficina de Estudios Latinos y Latinoamericanos (OLLAS) de la Universidad de Nebraska en Omaha (UNO) se enorgullece de ser un hogar y un espacio seguro para muchos de nuestros estudiantes y este compromiso sólo se ha profundizado en las últimas semanas. n the wake of a long presidential campaign characterized by divisive rhetoric, the election results of Tuesday, November 8th left us saddened and frustrated, but above all, concerned for the well-being of our students and our community. Many of our students belong to groups who were targeted and denigrated during the campaign—immigrants, Mexicans/Latina/os, Muslims, AfricanAmericans, LGBTQ, disabled, women, veterans, among others.

As an urban metropolitan institution with a growing and diverse student population, we believe that it is imperative at this time to reiterate our support for our students as well as other community members who feel in the aftermath of the election that their education, safety, security and livelihoods are now threatened. Over the course of this past couple of weeks, members of our faculty have witnessed firsthand how students are fearful for what may come in the future, for themselves and their families. We have also heard of reports of incidents of intimidation both on and off-campus of students and faculty alike.

The Office of Latino/Latin American Studies (OLLAS) at the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) has long prided itself on being a home and safe space for many of our students and this commitment has only deepened in the past few weeks. As such, we are staunchly committed to protecting our students and community members to our fullest capacity from anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, racist, misogynistic, and all other forms of marginalization, harassment, and hate.

Moreover, as integral members of the Omaha Latino community, working with our networks and affiliations, we are committed to extending these values as widely as possible knowing full well that these spaces are where the majority of these incidents do occur.

We vow not to be silent or passive when members of our community face fear and intimidation. No one should ever feel alone; in solidarity, we vow to overcome divisiveness, bigotry and hate.

We encourage students to be vigilant and report incidents of hate or harassment; all our faculty and staff have made themselves available to students for support and assistance. VICTOR GARCIA Especialista Bilingüe en Planeación para EducationQuest HISTORIA POR MARINA ROSADO

T

rabajar en el doblaje del idioma inglés al español de programas de televisión como las caricaturas y grabar comerciales para la radio, fue el sueño que orilló a Víctor García a estudiar una carrera universitaria.

Como desde pequeñito acostumbraba ayudar a sus padres, nacidos en Michoacán, traduciéndoles todo lo que fuera necesario, García optó por seguir una especialidad que le permitiera sacarle provecho a tal experiencia.

Así que se graduó en el 2010 de la Universidad de Nebraska en Kearney (UNK) obteniendo una Licenciatura en Traducción/Interpretación en Español, con estudios en Periodismo Radiofónico.

Originario de Grand Island, García primero buscó empleo en Kearney, en la organización EducationQuest Foundation que conoció antes: "Me acerqué para preguntarles si necesitaban sus materiales traducidos al español y de ahí me mandaron a la oficina de Omaha donde justamente buscaban a alguien bilingüe".

García fue contratado en el 2012 como Especialista Bilingüe en Planeación para la Universidad: "EducationQuest Foundation es una organización privada sin ánimo de lucro, es decir, no cobramos por nuestros servicios. Los materiales y los programas que presentamos en las escuelas, son gratis".

EducationQuest Foundation surgió en 1998 y García terminó la secundaria en 1999 y fue "gracias a que una amiga de la familia" le comentó de la organización, que se presentó en sus oficinas "para escuchar las opciones financieras" a su alcance.

En su caso, lo primero fue el recibir asesoría para llenar la Solicitud Gratuita de Ayuda Federal para Estudiantes (FAFSA): "Porque yo no estaba enterado de lo que había que hacer para ir a la universidad, así que no busqué las becas y no ahorré el dinero necesario, por lo que no tenía otra manera de pagar mis estudios que no fuera obteniendo ésa ayuda".

Los errores que cometió, ahora le permiten facilitarle el camino a quienes llegan a EducationQuest Foundation: "Es verdad que hay muchos papeles que se tienen que llenar, pero el proceso es fácil. Uno llena una solicitud para ser admitido en la universidad y luego busca la ayuda necesaria ya sea mediante becas federales, estudiantiles, obtener un trabajo mientras se estudia o bien, los préstamos, que es cuando se puede utilizar FAFSA".

"Mis calificaciones eran bajas porque no puse el esfuerzo que debía, pero participé en muchos grupos porque estaba en una escuela privada y ése era un requisito para graduarme", reconoció García agregando que al matricularse en UNK eso funcionó a su favor, pero aun así, estuvo a prueba para revisar su rendimiento académico.

PREOCUPACIÓN EN NE POR BAJOS SUELDOS EN CUIDADO DE NIÑOS

El Instituto de Buffet Early Childhood de la Universidad de Nebraska y Gallup publicaron los resultados de una encuesta donde mas de 7,100 residentes de Nebraska compartieron su opinión, actitud y conocimiento sobre cuidado de niños.

Los reportes “Cuidado de Niños y Educación Temprana” y “Residentes de Nebraska Hablan Sobre los Trabajadores de Cuidado de Niños y Educación Temprana”, fueron publicados en marzo y el mes pasado.

La mayoría de los participantes de esta encuesta dijeron que es de gran valor el cuidado de niños y la educación temprana, y quieren mayor apoyo para los trabajadores de esta área. Sesenta y seis por ciento de los participantes dijeron que los centros de cuidado de niños y educación, o los centros con base en el hogar, eran la mejor opción durante el día para las familias con niños.

Cincuenta y dos por ciento de los residentes de Nebraska recomendarían la carrera en cuidado de niños y educación temprana a un amigo o familiar.

Este porcentaje se incrementó a un 77 por ciento entre los participantes que son maestros o cuidadores. Cuarenta y ocho por ciento de los residentes de Nebraska creen que los maestros y cuidadores de estos centros dentro del Estado, ganan muy poco.

De hecho, EducationQuest Foundation tiene materiales dirigidos a los estudiantes de los grados 8, 9 y 10".

Algo que García aclaró es que en materia de educación tampoco debemos enfocarnos únicamente en las carreras universitarias, "pues también existen las carreras técnicas y además está la opción de ingresar a una escuela de dos años para cursar los créditos básicos y luego transferirlos a una universidad".

Como sea, EducationQuest Foundation le facilita el camino hacia la universidad a los estudiantes del estado: "Ofrecemos gratis tours guiados a las universidades y estadísticamente está comprobado que el 60% de quienes visitan las universidades, ¡regresan a estudiar a una!".

W

orking on dubbing TV shows and cartoons from English to Spanish and recording radio commercials was a dream that made Victor Garcia determined about going to college. Ever since he was little, he used to help his parents, who were born in Michoacan, by translating for them. This is why he opted for studying towards a specialty that would allow him to make the most of his expertise. He graduated in 2010 from the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK) with a Bachelor's in Spanish Translation/Interpretation, with studies in Radio Journalism.

Garcia, who was born in Grand Island, first looked for a job in Kearney at the EducationQuest Foundation: "I approached them to ask if they needed any of their documentation translated to Spanish and they sent me to the Omaha office because they were looking for someone who was bilingual."

Garcia was hired in 2012 as Bilingual College Planning Specialist: "The EducationQuest Foundation is a private non-profit organization - that means we do not charge for our services. All materials and programs we present at schools are completely free."

The EducationQuest Foundation was founded back in 1998. Garcia graduated from high school in 1999, and it was "thanks to a family friend" that told him about the organization that he ended up showing up at its office "to learn about the available financial options."

In his case the first thing to do was to receive help for filling out a free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA): "I didn't know what I needed to do to go to college so I didn't look for any scholarships, and I didn't save enough money - I didn't have a way to pay for my education if I didn’t get this.”

The mistakes he made now allow him to make things easier for people who visit the EducationQuest Foundation: "Sure, there’s a lot of paperwork to complete, but it’s a simple process. You fill out an application to be accepted into college, and you then seek the aid you need from federal scholarship, student scholarships, find a job you can work at while you study or you can even take on student loans, which is when you can use FAFSA.” The specialist mentioned that even though “there are always scholarships available in our community,” people must also have good grades and do several hours of community work.

"My grades were low because I didn’t work hard enough at school, but I was part of several groups because I was at a private school and it was one of the requirements for graduating,” said Garcia, adding that enrolling at UNK worked to his favor, but he still was on probation due to his academic performance.

On top of its locations in Kearney and Omaha, the EducationQuest Foundation has a main office in Lincoln. Its staff is trained to cover annual programs that are offered, for instance, during the school year – as is the case for the event that takes place this season in collaboration with Omaha Public Schools: “We do a presentation in English and another in Spanish because we know that students talk with counselors at their schools every day and that they guide them on what they need to do, but my main interest is to focus on Latino parents so that they know what their sons and daughters must do so that they don’t miss out on these opportunities.”

For Garcia it is very important that the whole family understands that requesting a loan should be the last option and not the first one: “There’s a lot that can be done before things come to that. For example,

NEBRASKAN CONCERN ABOUT CHILD CARE LOW WORKERS WAGES

The Buffett Early Childhood Institute at the University of Nebraska and Gallup published the findings of a survey where more than 7,100 Nebraska residents shared their beliefs, attitudes, and knowledge about early childhood. “Early Childhood Care and Education in Nebraska,” and “Nebraskans Speak About the Early Care and Education Workforce,” reports were published in March and last month.

The majority of respondents in this survey, say they place value on early childhood care and education, and want greater support for the early care and education workforce.

Sixty-six percent of Nebraskans say an early care and education center, or home-based center, are best when families cannot care for their children during the day. Fifty-two percent of Nebraska residents would recommend a career in the early care and education field to a friend or family member.

This percentage increases to 77 percent among respondents who are early childhood teachers or caregivers. Forty-eight percent of Nebraskans believe that early care and education teachers and caregivers in the state are paid too little.

In fact, EducationQuest Foundation has plenty of materials aimed at students in 8th, 9th, and 10th grade.”

Something else that Garcia made very clear is that people do not need to focus only on college careers for their education, “because we also have technical careers or the option of enrolling in a two-year school for basic credit courses that can later be transferred to a college.”

EducationQuest Foundation makes it easier for students in Nebraska to go to college: “We offer free guided tours to colleges, and stats show that percent of people who visit a college return to study in one!”
