INTRODUCCIÓN: Aunque hay mucha incertidumbre sobre las polizas de inmigracion actuales y futuras del nueve Presidente, la guía provee información y recursos sobre las siguientes maneras de hacer valer sus derechos y protegerse a usted mismo/a su familia, AHORA:

No entre en pánico, comprenda sus derechos, y no tenga miedo de hacerlos valer; 2. Conozca sus opciones bajo la ley hablando con un abogado de inmigración calificado o representante acreditado por el DOJ; 3. Prepare un plan de seguridad y este preparado en caso usted fuese arrestado, detenido o deportado; 4. Sepa que hay recursos disponibles y aliados abogando con usted en este tiempo de inceritdumbre! ¿Está Usted en Riesgo de Deportación?

1. Documentado: esta categoría incluye Residentes Permanentes Legales, así como personas con visas actuales o permisos de trabajo derivados de una forma corriente de alivio de inmigración. Las siguientes son personas documentadas que están en riesgo de deportación: a. Los que tienen antecedentes penales. No importa la edad de la condena, si usted cumplió algún tiempo en la cárcel, si fue un delito menor o un delito mayor, cuánto tiempo ha estado en los EE.UU, y / o si tiene algún miembro de la familia con estatus legal en los EE.UU. 2. 1. Bajo la administración Obama, del 2009 y 2015, 2,5 millones de personas fueron removidas de los Estados Unidos. Este número no incluye a aquellos que fueron rechazados y / o devueltos a su país en la frontera por CBP. Este número tampoco incluye a los que fueron deportados en 2016.

2. Durante el año fiscal 2015, el 91% de las personas retiradas de los Estados Unidos fueron previamente condenadas por un delito y el 98% de esas personas cumplieron con las prioridades establecidas anteriormente por la Administración Obama.

(ii) Las remociónes expedita son aún más problemáticas con la nueva orden ejecutiva, ya que la orden alienta a las autoridades estatales y locales a trabajar conjuntamente con la ICE y hacer cumplir la ley de inmigración.

2. Los titulares de visados que hayan sobrepasado o violado los términos de su estancia; 3. Personas documentadas e indocumentadas que hayan sido condenadas por cualquier delito; 4. Personas documentadas e indocumentadas que han cometido actos que constituyen un delito penal imponible-esto podría incluir ofensas menores de tráfico como conducir sin una licencia;

5. Personas documentadas e indocumentadas que hayan cometido fraude o tergiversación deliberada; 6. Personas documentadas e indocumentadas que han abusado de cualquier programa relacionado con la obtención de beneficios públicos; 7. Personas documentadas e indocumentadas que tienen una orden de remoción anterior, pero no se han marchado;o 8. Personas documentadas e indocumentadas que de otra manera representan un riesgo para la seguridad pública o la seguridad nacional.

INTRODUCTION: While there is much uncertainty regarding the new President’s current and future immigration enforcement policies, the Guide provides information and resources on the following ways to assert your rights and protect yourself/your family, NOW:

1

Don’t panic, understand your rights, and don’t be afraid to assert 2. Know your options under the law by speaking to a qualified immigration attorney or DOJ representative; 3. Create a safety plan and be prepared in the event you are arrested, detained or removed; 4. Know that there are resources available and advocates standing with you in this time of uncertainty!

Are You at Risk of Deportation?

Under current immigration law and recent executive orders, anyone who is not a U.S. Citizen can be deported. In general, people who can be at risk of deportation are divided into two categories: 1. Documented: this category includes Legal Permanent Residents, as well as people with current visas or work permits stemming from a current form of immigration relief. The following are documented individuals who are at risk of deportation: a. Those who have a criminal record. It does not matter how old the conviction is, if you served any jail time, if it was a misdemeanor or a felony, how long you have been in the U.S., and/or if you have any family members with legal status in the U.S. 2. Undocumented: this category of people includes those who crossed the U.S. border without inspection and people who overstayed their permission to be present in the U.S.: a. Due to the recent executive order titled “Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States,” if interpreted broadly, all undocumented immigrants can be at risk of deportation for merely entering the country without inspection or a mere traffic offense.

Under current immigration law and recent executive orders, anyone who is not a U.S. Citizen can be deported.

Deportation Priorities Previous Priorities (Under the Obama Administration) The Obama administration’s priorities were: 1) Immigrants who threatened national security, border security, and public safety; 2) Misdemeanants and new immigration violators; and 3) Immigrants who arrived after January 1, 2014.

1. Under the Obama administration, from 2009-2015, 2.5 million people were removed from the U.S. This number does not include those who were turned away and/or returned to their country at the border by CBP. This number also does not include those who were deported in 2016.

2. During the fiscal year 2015, 91% of people removed from inside the U.S. were previously convicted of a crime and 98% of those people met the priorities set forth above by the Obama Administration.

Trump Administration’s Current Deportation Priorities From the executive orders issued in late January of 2017, it is predicted that ICE will increase the amount of deportations given that nearly 8 million people are now a priority. The executive orders by the Trump administration have drastically changed the priorities established under the Obama administration. The order of priorities has not been set forth and all appear to be of equal importance to the government. The following people are a priority to be removed under the Trump administration: 1. Immigrants who entered without inspection and cannot prove to DHS that they have been continuously present for the previous two years. (i) This category of people can be subject to expedited removal, meaning they can be deported (in as little as 24 hours) without being able to fight their case before an immigration judge with no guarantee of legal counsel or opportunity to obtain counsel; Note: It is now of the utmost importance that both documented and undocumented immigrants put evidence of 2 years of continuous presence in a safe place.

(ii) Expedited Removals are even more problematic with the new executive order as the order encourages state and local law enforcement to work in conjunction with ICE and enforce immigration law.

2. Visa holders who have overstayed or violated the terms of their stay; 3. Documented and undocumented people who have been convicted of any criminal offense; 4. Documented and undocumented people who have committed acts that constitute a chargeable criminal offense— this could include minor traffic offenses like driving without a license; 5. Documented and undocumented people who have engaged in fraud or willful misrepresentation; 6. Documented and undocumented people who have abused any program related to receipt of public benefits; 7. Documented and undocumented people who have a previous removal order, but have not departed; or 8. Documented and undocumented people who otherwise pose a risk to public safety or national security.

FALLECE EL LÍDER SALVADOREÑO Victor J. Alfaro POR BERNARDO MONTOYA

L

a ciudad de Omaha se viste de luto con el triste he inesperado fallecimiento de un líder comunitario que puso el nombre de los salvadoreños en un lugar más visible y digno: Victor Jaime Alfaro.

Nació en el departamento de Santa Ana, en la República de El Salvador. Fue miembro de una familia conformada por ocho hermanos.

Buscando el sueño americano, en el año de 1994 inmigró a los Estados Unidos y para el 2008 se decidió mudarse a Omaha, donde habría de dejar huella con su labor comunitaria.

Lo primero que le distingo fueron sus artes culinarias, lo cual le abro las puertas en restaurantes de la región. Sin embargo, Victor Alfarobusco siempre promover la cultura de su país, en un conjunto de expresiones y tradiciones consistentes en costumbres, prácticas, códigos, normas y reglas que el mismo profesaba en su vida diaria.

Inquieto, busco hacer presente la existencia de la comunidad salvadoreña al involucrarse en diversas organizaciones no lucrativas, como la Cámara de Comercia Hispana, Midlands Latino Community Development Corporation, el Departamento de Policía de Omaha, la Asociación de Salvadoreños de Nebraska y las Escuelas Públicas de Omaha, entre otras.

Su herencia, en primer lugar, humana y cultural, ha sido crucial para consolidar las celebraciones masivas y públicas de la independencia de el Salvador en el Sur Omaha, siendo él la persona que negociara con La Camara de Comercio Hispana de Nebraska para compartir espacio y lograr crear un festival que enalteciera a los mexicanos y salvadoreños en sus debidos festejos patrios.

A esa contribución se sumaron diversos reinados de belleza, en los cuales enalteció la fuerza y dignidad de la mujer salvadoreña en Nebraska. Participó en eventos deportivos donde consiguió espacios de promoción cultural y gastronómica. Orquestó días de campo en los cuales concentró a sus compatriotas y a miembros de otros países, para estrechar lazos afectivos que permitieran un soporte mayor a las futuras actividades salvadoreñas. Ofreció platicas, dirigió colectas de fondos y apoyo la

creación de asociaciones culturales en distintos periodos de su estancia en nuestra ciudad.

Los escasos estudios de historiografía salvadoreña en Omaha fueron ampliados al tener una perspectiva más amplia de la cultura y el arte de El Salvador, gracias al trabajo de Alfaro.

No olvidamos, por supuesto, los decisivos aportes de sus antecesores, cuyos registros se asientan desde 1960. Sin embargo, a juicio integral de líderes miembros de las agencias

mencionadas, Victor Alfaro exhibió al pueblo salvadoreño de una manera masiva, permitiendo un mayor reconocimiento, y permitiendo también el surgimiento de nuevos líderes deseosos de hacer algo por promover también y a su manera, su identidad salvadoreña.

En todas las épocas, hay acontecimientos de gran significación en la historia cultural de una comunidad que no pueden ser olvidadas porque marcan rutas decisivas, rutas que en este caso

han servido para que otras culturas conozcan y respeten más las tradiciones de El Salvador.

Hoy, la muerte de Victor Alfaro significa una gran perdida, pero un gran legado, que deberá ser atesorado, difundido y agigantado por los connacionales que le suceden y por todos aquellos que le conocieron hasta el punto de considerarlo un gran amigo. Descanse en paz, amigo mio.

SALVADORAN LEADER VICTOR J. ALFARO has passed away

T

he City of Omaha mourns the unexpected death of Victor Javier Alfaro, a community leader who made all Salvadorans proud of their heritage.

He was born in Santa Ana, El Salvador, as part of a family of eight brothers. In 1994 he traveled to the United States seeking the American Dream, and by 2008 he decided to move to Omaha where he would end up leaving his mark on the community.

The first thing that made him stand out was his culinary skill which opened to him the doors to many of the restaurants in the region. Victor Alfaro always looked for ways to promote the culture of his country by presenting the series of expressions and traditions based on the traditions, practices, codes, norms and rules on which he lived his daily life.

He wanted to make the Salvadoran community stand out by working closely with non-profits such as the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Midlands Latino Community Development Corporation, Omaha Police Department, the Asociacion de Salvadoreños de Nebraska and Omaha Public Schools, to name a few.

His legacy, first of all on a human and cultural level, has been crucial for consolidating the massive public celebrations in South Omaha for the independence of El Salvador. He was the person who negotiated with the Nebraska Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to be able to share a space and make it possible for the celebrations to extol both Mexicans and Salvadorans as they celebrated their national festivities.

On top of that, there are the many beauty pageants wins that made it possible to showcase the strength and dignity of Salvadoran women in Nebraska. He worked hard for sporting events and managed to secure locations for promoting the culture and gastronomic offers of his people. He set up picnics where he brought together fellow countrymen as well as members from other countries to strengthen their bonds while he aimed at working on future Salvadoran activities. During his time in our city, he gave talks, coordinated fundraisers and supported the creation of several cultural organizations.

The somewhat lacking studies on Salvadoran historiography in Omaha were greatly improved

by having a wider perspective on the art and culture of El Salvador thanks to Alfaro’s work.

And while we must not forget the contribution of his forerunners from back in 1960, according to key leaders at the aforementioned agencies, Victor Alfaro greatly showcased the Salvadoran people, allowing them to gain recognition while encouraging the emergence of new leaders eager to work hard towards promoting, in their own way, the Salvadoran identity.

Every era has events of great significance for the cultural history of a community who cannot be forgotten. They establish decisive routes that, in this case, have served to help other cultures to learn more and respect the traditions of El Salvador.

Today, the death of Victor Alfaro is indeed a great loss, but his legacy shall be treasured and relayed as it continues to grow among the Salvadorans who will carry on with his work and among all of those who got to consider him as a great friend. May you rest in peace, my dear friend.

espués de decirse simplemente “hola” y de mirarse desde lejos por algunos años, Rudy Calderón se animó finalmente, se levantó y le dio un abrazo y un beso a Christina Reed en su cumpleaños. La celebración era mutua. Los dos comparten la misma fecha de celebración – 18 de marzo.

Luego la invitó a ir a comer helado. Ella aceptó. Esa primera cita se convirtió en más salidas y unos seis meses después se fueron a vivir juntos a la casa de Rudy. “Seguimos comiendo helado”, dice Rudy bromeando. “Los dos estaban buenos, el helado y ella”.

Dos años después de ese abrazo de felicitación, todavía están juntos, tan enamorados como cuando empezaron a salir. Saborean todos los días juntos, salen a bailar, a comer y a acampar. Son prueba que el amor nunca pasa de moda y que nunca es tarde para enamorarse, sin importar cuántas velas tenga el pastel de tu cumpleaños.

Hasta tomarse de las manos, abrazarse o besarse puede crear un corazón cariñoso y saludable, y prevenir la principal causa de muerte en Estados Unidos – las enfermedades cardiovasculares.

“Los altos niveles de tacto físico y una relación positiva en los adultos mayores pueden mejorar los resultados de salud entre los adultos mayores“, dijo Lee durante un simposio en la conferencia de la Sociedad Gerontológica de América en Nueva Orleans en noviembre pasado.

Rudy y Christina dicen que compartir una casa y cuidarse uno con el otro sí ayuda a que permanezcan independientes y se aseguren que cada uno esté sano y bien.

“A medida que envejeces, es mejor si estás solo, si vives con tus hijos eso no es bueno, estropeas su vida un poco, es mejor encontrar a alguien con quien estar”, dice Rudy. “Todo es mejor en dos“, añade. Recientemente, ambos tuvieron la influenza. Christina terminó en el hospital y Rudy mantuvo una vigilia junto a su cama a lo largo de su enfermedad.

“La pasamos bien en casa. Si algo me pasa, está ahí para mí”, dijo Christina.

“Es mejor tener un cuerpo caliente a tu lado que una almohada fría”, dice Rudy.

“Es bueno compartir todo juntos”, añade. Y así lo hacen. “Tomamos café en la misma taza y si comemos, comemos del mismo plato”, describe Christina.

Envejecimiento global, amor mundial El envejecimiento de la población está progresando rápidamente actualmente.

La proporción de la población mundial de 60 años o más aumentó del 8% en 1950 al 12% en 2013 y se espera que alcance el 21% en 2050. Además, la población de más edad también está envejeciendo.

A nivel mundial en 2013, uno de siete de esos ancianos tenía 80 años o más – y eso aumentará a uno en cada cinco ancianos para 2050, según las Naciones

Unidas. Y muchos de ellos estarán viviendo solos. Rudy, por ejemplo, perdió a su esposa hace más de 40 años. Christina había sido viuda durante más de 10 años. Pero también significa que tu segundo, tercer – cuarto o quinto – amor verdadero puede estar ahí.

La Oficina del Censo de Estados Unidos reporta que entre 1990 y 1999, el porcentaje de parejas no casadas compuestas por personas mayores de 65 aumentó significativamente.

Novios y ya jubilados Martha de León, de 65 años y Pablo Corado, de 81, son novios que hablan por teléfono todos los días como cualquier adolescente, se ven cada semana y disfrutan de una relación amorosa y sexual sana. Ambos estaban separados de sus respectivas parejas durante varios años antes de conocerse en el Club de Oro (una organización para latinos mayores en Los Ángeles).

“Me pidió que bailara y yo lo fleché”, dice Martha. “Me gusta todo acerca de ella, desde la trompita hasta el dedo gordo”, bromea Pablo.

Pablo se presentó en un tiempo difícil para ella. Unos meses antes le habían practicado una cirugía y le habían puesto un marcapasos. “Estaba muy deprimida, ni siquiera quería salir de la cama y cuando empecé a salir con él, me di cuenta de que el pedacito (del corazón) que todavía sirve, todavía late por amor“, dijo.

Pablo concuerda. “Muchas personas piensan que cuando se hace viejo el corazón está muerto y nadie puede despertarlo, pero el mío está muy despierto”, dice. ¿Y el sexo? Claro que sí ¿Y qué con el sexo? Sí hay.

“Es diferente, pero satisfactorio“, dicen ambos, aunque admiten que no es tan frecuente o al mismo ritmo que en sus años más jóvenes.

Eso no es sorprendente.

Según Maggie Syme, del Centro de Envejecimiento de la Universidad Estatal de Kansas, “el comportamiento sexual es normal, saludable y posible durante toda la vida“.

Eso es porque puede tomar muchas formas, y ser igual de satisfactorio como las acrobacias sexuales de la juventud. “El contacto físico puede estar tocamiento, la masturbación y otras formas de sexo”, señaló durante un simposio titulado “La búsqueda de la pasión: la salud sexual y relativa en la vejez”, que fue parte de la conferencia de la Sociedad Gerontológica de América.

Pero lo que más aprecia esta pareja es la compañía. “Tiene uno con quién desahogarse, con quién discutir, con quién pelear, alguien con quién irle a dar la vuelta a la manzana”, dice Pablo.

Incluso si tienen que hacerlo a “escondidas”.

Martha vive con el más joven de sus cuatro hijos, a ninguno de los cuales le gusta el hecho de que ella tiene un novio. Hasta su madre de 82 años desaprueba la relación.

De muchas maneras, es como si fuera una adolescente de nuevo, no sólo por sus sentimientos por Pablo, sino por el hecho de que tiene que casi escaparse para verlo.

La razón de esto es en parte, admite porque sus hijos “no ven bien que tenga una relación a esta edad”.

Pero añade, “es muy bonito sentir que alguien lo quiere a uno”.

Si duda, nunca es tarde para el amor.

El Comité de Apropiación de la Cámara de Senadores escuchó testimonio, el 24 de febrero, sobre un proyecto de ley que podría proveer fondos para investigadores bilingües para hacer cumplir la ley de Clasificación de Empleados, ECA por sus siglas en inglés.

El Senador Tony Vargas, patrocinador de la propuesta de ley LB416, dijo que la clasificación errónea sucede cuando un empleador paga a sus trabajadores como si fueran contratistas independientes en lugar que como empleados. El resultado, dijo el senador, es que esos trabajadores no califican para recibir beneficios incluyendo los otorgados por empleadores como seguro médico, compensación del trabajador y desempleo.

La clasificación errónea regularmente ocurre cuando un trabajador no habla inglés como su primer idioma, dijo Vargas, además que el Departamento del Trabajo (DOL) actualmente solo está reaccionando al hacer cumplir ECA es en parte porque solo tiene un empleado bilingüe que solo trabaja como investigador.

LB416 podría proveer $250,000 en el año fiscal 2017-18 y en el siguiente año del Fondo de Contingencia Especial para la Seguridad de Empleo con el fin que DOL pueda contratar otros dos investigadores para hacer cumplir ECA. El comité no tomó acción inmediata en LB416.

LAS AUTORIDADES DE OMAHA NO PROBARAN ESTADO INMIGRATORIO La alcaldesa Jean Stothert y el Jefe de la Policía Todd Schmaderer escribieron una carta la semana pasada para asegurar que la policía no explorará el estado legal en víctimas y testigos de crímenes, pero aquellos que cometan crímenes pueden esperar que la policía coopere con agencias federales del orden público.

El director ejecutivo del Latino Center of the Midlands, Albert Varas, respondió al pedir a la alcaldesa y al jefe de policía una junta para aclarar lo que ellos defnian como “crimen” que pudiera desencadenar la cooperación de la policía. No es claro en las órdenes ejecutivas del Presidente Trump que aún el cargo más insignificante pueda no ser suficiente causa de deportación, o condena.

La carta fue enviada a agencias del Sur de Omaha y a personas que trabajan en servicios para la juventud, cuidados de la salud, educación, entrenamiento de trabajo, asociaciones de negocios, con el fin de calmar la creciente inquietud sobre arrestos de inmigración tras la declaración del Presidente Trump sobre futuros refuerzos sobre procedimientos de inmigración. La carta solo reafirma los procedimientos ya existentes de la policía.

LOVE NEVER GETS OLD - Even at 100 LA OPINION/NEW AMERICA MEDIA , NEWS FEATURE, FRANCISCO CASTRO

OS ANGELES – After simply saying "Hi" and looking at each other from afar for some years, Rudy Calderon finally stood up, gave a hug and kiss to Christina Reed on their birthday. The celebration was mutual. The two share the same day – March 18.

Then he asked her out for ice cream. She accepted.

The first date turned into more outings and about six months later they moved in together.

"We just kept on eating ice cream," Rudy said jokingly. "Both were good, the ice cream and her."

Two years after that congratulatory hug, they're still together, as much in love as when they first started going out. They savor every day together, going out to dances, to eat, and even camping.

For them love never gets old, even if the numbers on their birthdays keep getting higher.

Rudy is 100 this year. Christina is much younger, almost 93.

They are "the couple" at Alicia Broadus Duncan Multipurpose Senior Center in Pacoima, where they met and hang out several days a week.

Study Confirms “Power of Touch” And they drive there in his car, just like they do everywhere. His driver's license is still good for another year.

"If they give it to me again, that'll be something," said Rudy, who remains active, seeing and hearing much better than others many decades his junior.

Study after study shows that love keeps you feeling young, involved and engaged, a sure fire way to keep illnesses away.

Jeong Eun Lee of Kent State University, noted in her study on the "The Power of Touch: Physical Affection Associated with Reduced Cardiovascular Disease Risk" that "emotional partners tend to lower high blood pressure."

Even holding hands, embracing, hugging or kissing can lead to a loving and healthy heart, and prevent the leading cause of death in the United States - cardiovascular disease.

"High levels of physical touch and a positive relationship in older adults can enhance health outcomes among older adults," Lee said during a symposium at the Gerontological Society of America conference in New Orleans last November.

Rudy and Christina said sharing a home and checking in with each other regularly helps them remain independent, healthy and well.

"As you get old, it's better if you're on your own. If you live with your kids, that's not good. You mess up their life a bit. It's better to find someone to be with," Rudy said.

"Everything's better in twos rather than one," he added.

Recently, they both got the flu. Christina ended up in the hospital and Rudy maintained a vigil next to her bed throughout the ordeal.

"We enjoy each other at the house. If something happens to me, he's there for me," Christina said.

"It's nicer to have a warm body next to you than a cold pillow," said Rudy, adding, "It's nice to share everything together."

And they do. "We have coffee in the same cup and if we eat, we eat from the same dish," Christina confided.

Global Aging, Global Loving The aging of the population is progressing rapidly today. The proportion of the world’s population aged 60 and above increased from 8 percent in 1950 to 12 percent in 2013 and it is expected to reach 21 percent in 2050.

Additionally, the older population is aging.

Globally in 2013, one in seven of those seniors were actually over 80 – and that will increase to one in five elders by 2050, according to the United Nations.

And many of them will be living on their own. Rudy, for instance, lost his wife over 40 years ago. Christina had been a widow for over 10 years.

But it also means that your second, third – or more – true love may be out there.

The U.S. Census Bureau reported that from 1990 to 1999, the percentage of unmarried senior couples 65 and older rose significantly.

Martha de León, 65, and Pablo Corado, 81, are a couple who talks on the phone everyday like any teenagers, see each other every week and enjoy a healthy loving and sexual relationship.

They were both separated from their respective spouses for several years before meeting at Club de Oro (the Golden Club, an organization for Latino seniors in Los Angeles).

"He asked me to dance and I swept him off his feet," Martha says.

"I like everything about her, from her mouth to her big toe," Pablo quipped.

They said Pablo showed up at a down time for her. A few months before the met, Martha had surgery to put in a pacemaker.

"I was very depressed. I didn't even want to leave the bed, and when I started to go out with him, I realized the piece [of the heart] that still works, still beats for love," she said.

Pablo agreed.

"Many people think that when you get old the heart is dead and no one can wake it up, but mine is very awake," he said.

And Sex? Yes! And what about sex? Yes. "It's different, but satisfactory," they both said, while noting that it's not as often or at the same pace as in their younger years. That's not surprising.

According to Maggie Syme of the Kansas State University Center on Aging, "Sexual behavior is normal, healthy and possible throughout the lifespan."

That's because it can take on many forms, and be equally satisfying as the acrobatics of youth love making.

"Physical contact can be touching, masturbation and other forms of sex," she noted during a symposium at the gerontology conference titled "The Pursuit of Passion: Sexual and Relational Health in Later Life." But what they cherish the most is the companionship.

"You have someone with whom to vent, with whom to argue, with whom to fight, someone with whom to walk around," Pablo observed. Even if they have to do it in "hiding," such as from some family members.

Martha lives with the youngest of her four children, none of whom like the fact that she has a boyfriend. Even her 82-year-old mother disapproves.

In many ways, it's as if she was a teenager again, not only about her feelings for Pablo, but the fact that she has to maneuver to see him.

Part of it, she concedes, is that her kids "don't see it well that I have a relationship at this age."

But she stressed, "It's very nice to feel that someone loves you."

Indeed, love never gets old.

BRIEFS FUNDS SOUGHT FOR BILINGUAL LABOR INVESTIGATORS The Unicameral Appropriations Committee heard testimony February 24 on a bill that would provide funds for bilingual investigators to enforce the Employee Classification Act (ECA).

Omaha Sen. Tony Vargas, sponsor of LB416, said employee misclassification happens when an employer improperly paid workers as independent contractors rather than as employees. The result, he said, is that those workers are ineligible for benefits including employee-sponsored health insurance, workers’ compensation and unemployment benefits.

Misclassification often occurs when a worker does not speak English as their first language, Vargas said, adding that the state Department of Labor (DOL) currently is reactive in its enforcement of the ECA in part because it has only one bilingual employee who serves as an investigator.

LB416 would provide $250,000 in fiscal year 2017-18 and FY2018-19 from the Employment Security Special Contingent Fund to the DOL to employ two more bilingual investigators to enforce the ECA. The committee took no immediate action on LB416.

OMAHA AUTHORITIES WON’T PROBE LEGAL STATUS Mayor Jean Stothert and Police Chief Todd Schmaderer issued a letter last week reassuring that police won’t be probing legal status on victims and witnesses of crimes, but those who commit crimes can expect to see police cooperate with federal law enforcement agencies.

Latino Center of the Midlands Executive Director Albert Varas responded by asking the mayor and police chief to meet and elaborate on how they would define the “crimes” that would trigger police cooperation. It’s unclear from President Trump’s executive order that even the smallest charge might not be cause for deportation, much less a conviction.

The letter was sent to South Omaha agencies and people working in youth services, health care, education, job training and business associations to calm heightened concerns about immigration arrests in the wake of statements by President Donald Trump that an unprecedented enforcement effort was underway. The letter just affirms existing police procedures.

“Please be assured that Omaha police officers do not and will not seek out individuals to check their legal status,” Stothert and Schmaderer wrote in the letter.

“This is not the mission or duty of the Omaha Police Department…whether you are the victim of a crime or witness a crime, you can be confident you can seek help from our police department without fear.”

Sin embargo, el partido no iba a comenzar nada bien para los intereses de los mexicanos, pues en el 3’ de partido recibieron el primer gol de los Gallos, obra de Rolando Pardo.

Le tocaba remar en contra al equipo azteca, que fue de menos a más en el partido. Los de José Vidal llegaban a la meta rival con largas jugadas colectivas, llegando las mejores ocasiones con remates en el segundo palo ante un equipo local que también generaba mucho peligro, disparando al palo en el 9’ antes del segundo gol de Rolando Pardo en el 11’, que aprovechó un mano a mano tras una contra local para hacer el 2-0.

Tras el segundo gol local, el equipo verdiblanco aumentó el ritmo y se hizo con el balón, buscando recortar distancias con una fuerte presión arriba y jugadas colectivas que hacían sufrir a los rallas negras.

Finalmente, tras tanto buscarlo, Real México encontró la recompensa a ocho segundos para el descanso con un gol de Javi Sánchez, que aprovechó un rechace del meta local para hacer el 2-1.

La segunda mitad tuvo de nuevo un nefasto inicio para el equipo verdiblanco, ya que Jacobo Andrew Jr. aumentó la ventaja en la primera jugada del periodo.
