“The idea is to have citizens organize and keep their eyes open to be aware of anything that might seem suspicious on the streets so that they can quickly report it to the authorities. We provide them with the information they need to be able to spot a possible crime and to make it possible to have an active 24/7 surveillance,” explained Southeast Precinct Crime Prevention Specialist Ofelia Robles. “It’s not about having people change their daily routine or have them do the police’s work. The idea is to adopt some simple steps that will make things a lot safer,” said Robles. As for the work that people do for their neighborhood, what they do is keep the neighborhood clean and organized, making sure that each home has the proper lighting, especially in spots where an intruder could be hiding. A list is drafted as a team for what they need to request to the city, for things such as repairing the streets, lamp posts or signage, removing garbage or abandoned vehicles, among other things. For Manuel Diaz, whom’s neighborhood on zip code 68107 is in the aforementioned program, help has been quite effective. “I recently got home, and the police was there because someone had broken one of the windows in my car. A neighboor called 911 and gave the police information on what said person looked like. This was possible because the Police Department had provided us with the information we needed to be able to quickly spot a delinquent, properly report the situation to the authorities so that they can find the suspect, and that is what happened in this case.” Crime does not stop, which is why citizens need to participate so that everyone can have safer areas for our families. ESTUDIANTE APASIONADA busca hacer una diferencia
C
omo estudiante de Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA), Yesica Guadalupe Lara, de 22 años de edad, quiere proteger a las personas que como ella viven a merced de las volubles políticas de inmigración.
Las prácticas gratuitas ayudan a los residentes con asuntos civiles. Lara se identificó con los retos a los que se enfrentas los clientes inmigrantes. Ella aprovechó su experiencia de venir con su madre a los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica desde México cuando tenía 10 años de edad. “Una de las grandes razones por las que yo quiero ser abogada en inmigración, es que puedo entender por lo que están pasando las personas pues fue algo que yo viví”, nos dijo. “No hay muchos profesionales que tengan esa empatía o compresión”. Lara, la más joven de seis hermanos, dijo que ella y su madre María “pasamos por mucho juntas, pues éramos solamente ella y yo”. “Mi madre estaba buscando que yo tuviera un mejor futuro”.

Ella también logró apreciar la importancia de ser bilingüe.
Lara también alzó la voz sobre la necesidad de una reforma sobre inmigración para remover la incertidumbre y el peligro en el que se encuentran las personas indocumentadas. Ella también considera que quienes se oponen a los inmigrantes necesitan estar más informados.
“Muchos de nosotros vivimos día a día esperando cuál será el siguiente cambio en las políticas de inmigración. Es algo muy aterrador pues nunca sabes qué sigue o qué pasará”, dijo Lara, quien ha vivido el que personas cercanas a ella han sido deportadas. “En verdad apesta”.
Durante la primavera ella trabajó en la Clínica Legal Milton R. Abrahams de la Universidad Creighton con estudiantes de último año de la carrera de derecho en dicha universidad. Ella es la primera estudiante de CSM en completar sus prácticas gracias a una alianza entre dos instituciones católicas que permiten que quienes van a obtener el grado de asistente jurídico puedan obtener experiencia práctica. En un programa cooperativo los estudiantes pueden obtener sus grados de asistente jurídico y JD en solamente seis años.
“Antes, yo era algo tímida al hablar en idioma inglés debido a mi marcado acento, pero me ha ayudado a entender que está bien ser diferente”.

La estudiante de último año del College of Saint Mary va por buen camino para graduarse en diciembre con un grado de asistente jurídico. Ella planea presentar el Examen de Admisión a la Escuela de Derecho (LSAT) para eventualmente estudiar derecho migratorio. Es un área en donde ella puede aplicar su experiencia personal con el sistema, además de que puede ser útil su fluidez con el idioma español.
Ella considera que la clínica le preparo para sus estudios en la escuela de derecho y le brindó una nueva confianza para poder expresarse.
“Creo que si las personas estuvieren más informadas sobre el proceso y vieran lo que tuvimos que pasar para poder inmigrar a este país, entonces tendrían una opinión diferente”. El año pasado se unió al grupo de DREAMERS en un viaje a Washington D.C. para abogar por la DACA ante la delegación del congreso en Nebraska. “Los líderes pudieron escuchar cómo nos sentimos y lo que estamos pasando. Aprendimos sobre su perspectiva. Fue una experiencia educacional para ellos y para nosotros”. El padre de Lara falleció en México cuando ella tenía 12 años de edad. Su madre trabajó por temporadas como ama de llaves en un hotel. “En ocasiones”, dijo Lara, “todo lo que comía durante el día eran los alimentos que teníamos en la escuela. Hubo momentos en los que solamente teníamos un huevo y ambas teníamos que compartirlo. Mi mamá cocinaba y vendía la comida para poder proveer para nuestro hogar”. Pasar por esos tiempos difíciles le ayudó a volverse más fuerte. “Aprendí que las cosas en la vida no son fáciles y que si quieres algo tienes que trabajar para obtenerlo. Aprendí que, sin importar qué pase, mi mamá es la persona que siempre va a estar ahí para mí, de la misma forma que yo voy a estar ahí para ella. Si ella está débil, yo debo ser fuerte para que ella pueda ser fuerte de nuevo. “Ella es mi principal apoyo”. Después de estar en Florida, este equipo de madre e hija se mudó a Kansas, Missouri, en donde vive uno de los hermanos de Lara. Durante sus años como estudiante de preparatoria, Lara asistió a la Summer Latina Academy de CSM en Omaha. La academia es en donde ella aprendió sobre la Beca Misericordia privada que apoya a los estudiantes indocumentados

que no son elegibles para el apoyo del gobierno. Ella presentó su solicitud y obtuvo la beca. “Yo lo veo como una gran oportunidad. Tuvo un gran impacto sobre mí, no solo sobre mí sino sobre mi mamá”. Aunque ha habido “sacrificios” durante el camino, Lara dijo, “al final del día valdrá la pena”. Brenda Romero, profesora asistente de CSM, ha sido otro gran apoyo. “Ella me ha visto durante mis mejores momentos y durante mis peores momentos”, dijo Lara sobre Romero. “Ella me ha visto crecer durante mi experiencia en CSM. Ella siempre me da palabras de ánimo cuando las necesito”. Otro modelo para Lara es su hermana Jennifer Lara, quien ejerce en derecho familiar en México. “Quiero algún día poder ser como mi hermana”, dijo Lara. “Ella me aconseja. En ocasiones le llamo cuando no entiendo algo de una de mis taras o si no sé cómo resumir un caso para una de mis clases. Ella ha sido una gran influencia en mi vida”. Trabajar en la clínica de la Universidad Creighton dejó una gran impresión en Lara sobre “cuántas personas necesitan asistencia legal y no pueden costearlo”.
Ella ha pasado por mucho para ahora ser una aspirante a abogada. Ella considera que esto es gracias a su red de soporte que le permitió llegar hasta aquí. “Es un gran logro poder estar a un semestre de graduarme. He tenido la gran suerte de tener personas que me motivan a ser mejor, a seguir adelante y a no rendirme cuando siento que quiero darme por vencida”. Todo hasta este punto ha sido para su madre, dijo Lara, cuyo perfil de Facebook proclama con orgullo: “La familia antes de todo”. “Mi madre trabaja más de 12 horas al día. No sé cómo lo hace, pero ella hace todo eso para ayudarme. Una vez que me gradúe, quiero que ella deje de trabajar pues entonces será momento de que yo cuide de ella”. Asientos hechos de bloques de concreto y lajas de cantera suave han remplazado las placas en el anfiteatro del Parque Hummel, una forma en que la Ciudad de Omaha encuentra formas de reusar materiales que salen de la renovación del Gene Leahy Mall. También se usara cantera para delinear el estacionamiento en el parque Levi Carter, ubicado en el 809 Carter Lake Shore Drive. Otros materiales que se reusaran del mal incluyen 13 bancas donadas por el Distrito de Mejoras del Centro. Las bancas fueron reparadas y se usaran en el parque que se inauguró el año pasado en el Lago Flanagan cerca de la calles 168 y Fort. Seats made of cinder blocks and slabs of smooth limestone have replaced planks in the Hummel Park amphitheater as Omaha finds ways to repurpose materials from the Gene Leahy Mall renovation. So far, about 170 tons of limestone has been reclaimed from the west half of the mall. The limestone will be used at Hummel Park, Brown Park and Levi Carter Park, and to rebuild retaining walls along the city’s trail system. Limestone from the mall also will be used for an amphitheater at Brown Park, 5708 S. 15th St., an amenity many neighbors have requested, Brook Bench said, the city park’s director. Limestone also was used to line the parking lot at Levi Carter Park, 809 Carter Lake Shore Drive. Other materials salvaged from the mall include 13 benches donated by the Downtown Improvement District. The benches were refurbished and will be used at the park that opened last year at Flanagan Lake near 168th and Fort Streets. Brick from the mall is being painstakingly salvaged, cleaned and stacked. That process has used more than 800 staff hours.
CASA DE REPRESENTANTES PASA PROPUESTA PARA SUBIR SALARIO MÍNIMO La Casa de Representantes votó el jueves, 18 de julio, el aumentar el salario mínimo federal a $15 la hora, algo que ha sido prioridad y una propuesta de los candidatos demócratas que se postularan en el 2020. La propuesta de ley, la cual pasó con 231 votos a favor y 199 en contra, podría subir el salario mínimo gradualmente del actual $7.25 la hora hasta alcanzar $15 la hora para el 2025. La legislatura fue modificada anteriormente para proveer un aumento lento gradual de seis años, en lugar de la propuesta original de 5 años. Al final, el aumento gradual lento fue propuesto por los miembros moderados, junto con un estudio que medirá el impacto del incremento del salario desde su principio hasta su implementación total, para satisfacer las preocupaciones de la mayoría de los miembros de la casa de representantes. HOUSE PASSES BILL TO INCREASE FEDERAL MINIMUM WAGE House of Representatives voted Thursday, July 18, to lift the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, delivering on a long-standing liberal priority that has become a rallying cry for 2020 Democratic presidential contenders. The bill, which passed 231-199, would raise the minimum wage gradually from its current level of $7.25 an hour until reaching $15 an hour in 2025. The legislation was amended earlier to provide for a slower six-year phase-in, instead of five years as originally envisioned. Ultimately, the slower phase-in pushed by moderate members — along with a proposed study that would measure the impacts of the wage increase partway through its implementation — satisfied the concerns of the large majority of House Democrats. Although the legislation is not expected to advance in the Republican-run Senate, where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has said he will not take it up, House Democrats celebrated what they described as a major achievement in their fight for U.S. workers. The federal minimum wage has not been raised since 2009, but Republicans described the Democratic legislation as a politically motivated jobs-killer designed to undermine economic gains they said had been made under President Trump.
OMAHA NEXT TRASH CONTRACT IS NOW IN THE CITY COUNCIL’S COURT Mayor Jean Stothert on Wednesday put Omaha’s next trash contract in the City Council’s hands, recommending for a second time that the city hire Spain-based FCC Environmental. Because several council members have said they want to hire the low bidder, Minnesota-based West Central Sanitation, the mayor also gave the council that option, but without her backing. The mayor and Department of Public Works officials have said they prefer FCC because it’s a larger company with more experience picking up trash in large cities. Many residents who testified on the contract at a previous public hearing said they prefer separate yard waste collection and composting. The bids for the supplemental yard waste plan will be opened July 31, in time for the council’s expected August 13 vote on the overall trash contract. A few council members suggested that they might delay the public hearing until they know the costs of the mayor’s supplemental yard waste plan.

E
n la ciudad de Omaha se ha formado una importante agrupación que combina cultura y tradición para presentar por toda la región un espectáculo musical y visual con toques místicos inconfundibles. Su nombre es: Raíces de México. Desde el año 2008 comenzó a gestarse esta idea, sin embargo, no fue sino hasta el 2009 cuando se presentaron oficialmente, pero divididos en dos grupos y con un nombre muy distinto. Se hicieron llamar Los Copetones y Las Guadalupanas, teniendo como Presidentes Fundadores a Jorge Zepeda y Gloria Quiñones, quienes de esta forma lograron instauran localmente una tradición aprendida en su natal Grullo Jalisco, México.
Lo que es de aplaudirse es la constancia y evolución que ha tenido el grupo, misma que ha permitido que diversas familias acudan a ellos como una forma de distracción, ejercicio, aprendizaje cultural he incluso añoranza y nostalgia por la tierra que les vio nacer.
“Es un trabajo arduo que requiere de mucho sacrificio, entrega y voluntad por parte de todos”, dijo el señor Zepeda. Sin embargo, aún sabiendo que todos le reconoces su gran liderazgo afrente del proyecto, ha dicho que el próximo año buscarán un nuevo presidente.
Cabe puntualizar que desde la época prehispánica, la danza ha sido vista como una forma de ofrenda que permitía el contacto cercano con Dios. En dicha espiritualidad no puede faltar la Virgen de Guadalupe, pues innegablemente al hablar acerca de la danza mexicana se hace necesario hablar también de la Morenita del Tepeyac, quien ha sido el motor principal para la conservación de esta expresión cultural que hoy se cataloga en los museos y libros de historia como un acto 100% religioso.
“Estamos viendo quién es el idóneo. Buscaremos alguien con ideas frescas que permita que el grupo siga creciendo mucho mas todavía”.
De hecho, fue precisamente en el seno de la Iglesia de Guadalupe y Santa Inés que se logro el apoyo para comenzar con Los Copetones y Las Guadalupanas, con la finalidad de enaltecer las festividades parroquiales. Sin embargo, su trayectoria fue ganando terreno y las invitaciones no se hicieron esperar por parte de diversas agencias privadas y de gobierno. Al mismo tiempo, la demanda del público por presenciar nuevas coreografías provoco que comenzaran a diversificar su catálogo de coreografías. Dichos cambios motivaron que ambos grupos se fusionaran para formar uno solo, al cual bautizaron como Raíces de México, conservando a la familia Zepeda en la presidencia. Juan Hernández ocupa la vice presidencia. Elizabeth Martínez es la secretaria. Cabriola Chávez es la tesorera y cuentan también con un comité conformado por varias organizaciones amigas que ayudan para coordinar a los grupos.
ARTICULO DESTACADO
Al año llegan a presentarse en 12 eventos locales y 6 foráneos. Su lugar de ensayo sigue siendo el gimnasio de la iglesia de Asunción y el salón de Guadalupe.
Sin lugar a dudas ha sido un camino largo y pesado llegar a este punto. Y es gracias a la cabeza de proyecto que han permanecido firmes y fuertes.
Desde entonces, no han dejado de bailar, ataviados de coloridos trajes artesanales. Y aún que solamente quedan 6 bailarines fundadores, actualmente tienen un registro conformado por 50 familias.

Para la familia Zepeda, los años invertidos en la dirección de Raíces de México han sido de mucha satisfacción, “En primer lugar porque somos promotores de nuestra propia cultura y de nuestras raíces, y en segundo porque estamos inculcando a la niñez y a la juventud los valores que nos caracterizan, para asegurarnos de que no se pierdan. Además, podemos ser tomados como una alternativa para sacar a los jóvenes de la calle, porque nos manejamos con una filosofía que inculca valores humanos y cristianos”. El pasado 13 de julio celebraron su aniversario número 11, con un convivio que permitió una remembranza de toda su trayectoria. Al mismo tiempo se entrego un reconocimiento a los bailarines que están como fundadores y a los que ya han acumulado más de 5 años en la agrupación. En resumen, Raíces de México es un ejemplo de lo que se puede lograr por amor al territorio azteca, asegurando que se riqueza cultural, histórica y folclórica se promuevan de manera digna, con lo cual se habrá de lograr una mejor identidad en las nuevas generaciones.

A
n important group has formed in the city of Omaha that combines the culture and tradition to present a musical and visual show with a dash of unmistakable mystical elements: Raices de Mexico. The idea started to take shape back in 2008, but it wasn’t until 2009 that it was officially presented, but it was divided into two groups with different names. They called themselves Los Copetones and Las Guadalupanas, with Jorge Zepeda and Gloria Quiñones as its Founding Presidents, who managed to establish in the city a tradition they learned in their natal Grullo, Jalisco, México. And from that moment on, they have not stopped dancing, wearing a colorful hand-crafted wardrobe. Even though only six of the founding dancers remain with the organization, 50 families are enrolled. We must highlight that since Prehispanic times, dance is seen as an offering that allowed people to be closer to God. This spirituality is present thanks to the Virgen de Guadalupe because one can’t talk about

Mexican dance without mentioning the “Morenita del Tepeyac,” who has been the driving force behind the preservation of this cultural expression which is today cataloged in museums and history books as a 100% religious act. In fact, it was the Our Lady of GuadalupeSt Agnes Parish that provided support for the emerging Los Copetones and Las Guadalupanas, to highlight the parish’s festivities. The groups started to grow in popularity, which led to them being invited to perform by many private as well as government agencies. The public’s demand to see new choreographies made them diversify their catalog. These changes motivated both groups to merge into a single one, which they named Raices de Mexico, with the Zepeda family in the President’s chair, Juan Hernandez as Vice President, Elizabeth Martinez as Secretary, and Cabriola Chavez as Treasurer. It also has a committee with members from many organizations that help to coordinate the many groups.

Each family that is part of this group pays a $20 fee, and each member is responsible for its wardrobe. Every year they perform at twelve local events and six outside of the city. Their rehearsal space continues to be the gym of the Our Lady of Guadalupe-St Agnes Parish. What must be applauded is the group’s perseverance and evolution, which has allowed many of the families to join them as a way to entertain themselves, workout, learn more about the culture, making some of them feel a bit of nostalgia for their homeland. It has, without a doubt, been a long and heavy road, and it has been thanks to the organization’s leadership. “It’s a lot of work that requires a lot of sacrifices, devotion, and determination from everyone,” said Zepeda. However, even though everyone recognizes his exceptional leadership for the project, he has said that next year, they will look for a new President. “We are reviewing who could be the right person for the job. We’ll look for someone
with fresh ideas that can allow the group to continue growing even more.” For the Zepeda family, all the years invested in Raices de Mexico have been very fulfilling. “We are promoting our own culture and roots, and we’re also instilling values in kids and young individuals, to make sure they don’t stray from the good path. We can also be taken into consideration as an option for keeping kids off the streets because we work hard under a philosophy that instills human and Christian values.” They celebrated their 11th anniversary on July 13 with an event that allowed everyone to remember their trajectory. An award was presented to the founding dancers and to those that have been with the group for more than five years. Raices de Mexico is an excellent example of what can be done in the name of the love of Mexico, making sure that it’s cultural, historical, and folkloric richness, promoting a better identity for new generations.

E
n la ciudad de Omaha se llevo a cabo un
evento religioso que por su solemnidad y protocolo es considerado como uno de los mas importantes para los católicos de la región.
Se trató de la procesión anual de Corpus Christi, que organiza la iglesia católica de San Pedro, en el sur de la ciudad, la cual congrego a centenares de feligreses que de forma devota se unieron para recorrer un trayecto de 1,4 millas. Cabe mencionar que esta tradición es una manifestación pública de fe, que desde el siglo XV reafirma la presencia de Cristo resucitado en la hostia consagrada, expuesta en el interior de un ornamento llamado Santísimo Sacramento.

Llamo la atención lo inclusivos que resultaron, al considerar a las personas de la tercera edad y discapacitados, ya que se corto con un transporte especial designado para todos aquellos que estuvieran imposibilitados para realizar el total del trayecto que partió de la parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes a la iglesia de San José. Igual que en años anteriores, las inclemencias climática amenazaron con la cancelación del evento, sin embargo, todo continuó normalmente y al final se reporto un saldo blanco, según el Departamento de Policía, a cargo de mantener el orden vial en las calles implicadas. Así, la fe religiosa recorrió las calles de la ciudad, en un acto de paz pública y religiosa que permitió apreciar el arraigo de tradiciones espirituales, como la de Corpus Christi.
