L

a música suena repitiendo el mismo ritmo y ellas avanzan pensando que entre el público imaginario esta esa persona que las calificara de manera perfecta.

Caminan con el paso marcado por tacones de 15 centímetros, y al verlas uno se puede imaginar los destellos de los flashes, el brillo de las lentejuelas y hasta los suspiros del público. Pero ahora están de ropa cómoda, sobre una pasarela improvisada de madera, en las instalaciones de la Academia Mexicana de Danza del Estado de Nebraska.

“Enderecen la postura”, grita Héctor Moreno, coreógrafo del grupo que en solo unas clases les va a enseñar como presentarse en la pasarela.

Pero, mientras llega la fecha, ellas luchan por caminar correctamente sin perder la sonrisa ni caerse de sus zapatos o quedar fuera de sincronía.

Y apenas terminan Héctor sentencia: “Horrible”.

Así es el mundo de los certámenes de belleza, o por lo menos esto es parte de las arduas horas de trabajo que tendrá un grupo de jóvenes latinas que buscan la corona de un nuevo certamen llamado: Miss Nebraska Latina.

La cede para este certamen es la ciudad de Omaha, misma en la que se presentara el evento final de coronación, este próximo 12 de enero.

"Tenemos a un gran grupo de profesionales que brindarán a cada participante una formación integral y nuestra comunidad podrá notarlo porque vamos a impartirles un tipo de educación que no se les da en la escuela o en la casa, vamos a encaminar a nuestras nuevas líderes que serán portavoces de nuestra gran cultura”, enfatizo Gonzalo Ramirez, Director Regional del certamen.

Por otro lado, y contrario a los halagos o aplausos a esta actividad, hay gente que esta en contra de que se hagan más concursos de belleza, por que cosifican a las mujeres y favorecen la violencia de género. Y si hay una voz que se opone es la de las feministas que ya desde mediados del siglo pasado repudian los concurso.

Una de ellas es Dianne Cisneros, de la Universidad de Lincoln en Nebraska y curadora de arte, quien argumenta: “El mercado de los concursos de belleza es todo un negocio y no podemos permitir que las mujeres sean valoradas tan superficialmente y menos que estén en eventos donde las califican de ‘chula’, ‘plástica’, ‘de mentiras’, ‘creídas’, ‘caras bonitas’…”

Indiscutiblemente, los prejuicios son parte de las sombras que persiguen a estos eventos.

Para Gonzalo Ramirez, “esto es un tabú que Miss Nebraska Latina viene a romper, porque todas nuestras participantes además de ser bellas también son muy inteligentes y con nuestro programa intensivo de trabajo les damos las armas que les servirán no solo para competir por nuestra corona sino también para tener las bases que facilitarán una entrevista laboral, el crecimiento en sus lugares de trabajo y el deseo de ser más competitivas”.

Ahora bien, ¿porqué traer un nuevo evento de belleza a la ciudad? Rita Rodriguez, directora regional de Miss Nebraska Latina, respondió: “Decidimos hacer este certamen en Nebraska, ante falta de tener un evento profesional en el estado que abarque diferentes

usic plays loudly, repeating the same beat over and over, and they walk while picturing that among the imaginary crowd is that one person that will give them a perfect score. They walk while wearing five-inch heels, and as one watches it is easy to imagine the camera flashes, the glowing sequins, and even the gasping audience. But right now everyone is wearing more comfortable clothing, walking down an improvised wooden runway at the Mexican Dance Academy of Nebraska.

“Straighten up your posture,” shouts Hector Moreno, the group's choreographer who, with during a few classes, will teach them about how to work the runway. But, for now, they struggle as they try to walk the right way, smiling without falling, all as they keep a beat. As soon as everyone is done, Hector has only one thing to say: “horrible.”

That is how things are in the world of beauty pageants, and this is only part of the many hours this group of Latinas will need to spend working hard towards one goal: to win the crown of the new Miss Nebraska Latina beauty pageant. The event will take place in the city of Omaha where a winner will be crowned on January 12.

"We have a group of professionals who will work with all contestants, and our community will notice all the hard work because we will give contestants an education they can’t get at school or home. We will set our new leaders on a path that will take them on a journey to be the spokeswoman of our great culture,” emphasized Gonzalo Ramirez, Regional Director for the pageant.

On the other hand, and contrary to the accolades and applause for this activity, there are people who are against the celebration of beauty pageants because they objectify women and promote gender-based violence. And if there is a group that has raised its voice against these events is that of feminists who have been against them for decades.

Art curator Dianne Cisneros, from the University of Lincoln in Nebraska, is one of them: “Beauty pageants are nothing more than a business, and we can’t allow women to be valued so superficially, especially in events in which they’re catalogued as ‘pretty face,’ ‘plastic,’ ‘shallow,’ ‘self-important’....”

Without a doubt, prejudice is part of the looming shadow that hangs over these events.

For Gonzalo Ramirez, “this is a taboo that Miss Nebraska Latina aims to break, because, on top of being beautiful, all of our contestants are also very smart, and with our intensive work program we provide them with the tools they’ll need to not only compete for our crown but also to have the skills needed for job interviews, for growth in the workplace, and for having the drive to be more competitive.”

The question is, why bring a new beauty pageant to the city? Miss Nebraska Latina regional director Rita Rodriguez had this to say: “We decided to do this pageant in Nebraska since there isn’t a professional event in the State with an emphasis on educational topics while highlighting the beauty of the Latino women who live in his part of the United States.”

a 2da Convención Política Bianual del Heartland Workers Center comenzó el domingo pasado en el edificio del Stockyards Exchange. Más de 200 personas asistieron a la conferencia, incluyendo varios líderes políticos y líderes la comunidad. El tema general de la convención: imaginar un cambio.

El evento comenzó con una asamblea con los Pastores Sarah Dickinson y Sergio Amaya y, después de las introducciones por partes del maestro de ceremonias Emiliano Lerda y de la maestra de ceremonias Abbie Kretz, la oradora principal Katie Weitz, de la Weitz Family Foundation, se dirigió a los asistentes.

“Nuestra seguridad física, así como nuestras libertades básicas como personas de color, como inmigrantes, son abiertamente amenazadas a plena luz del día. Estamos aquí para hablar juntos y que nuestras voces sean escuchadas por un futuro mejor y vemos que somos parte de ese cambio”, dijo Weitz.

Weitz aconsejó a los asistentes sobre la importancia de conocer los problemas y las cuestiones que están sucediendo en la comunidad.

“Sabemos que el número de minorías en el Estado de Nebraska está aumentando, pero esto no significará nada a no ser que todos nos organicemos. No necesitamos buscar que otras personas lo hagan por nosotros pues nosotras podemos hacerlo. Debemos creer firmemente en esta visión compartida, tan fuerte que se adentre en nuestras mentes y nuestros corazones y debemos actuar”, comentó Weitz.

“Debemos reclutar y desarrollar agentes del cambio con la ayuda del Heartland Workers Center y sus fuertes conexiones con las colaciones. Desarrollar una política nos ayudará a hacer un cambio en nuestra comunidad”, dijo Weitz.

La Weitz Family Foundation busca romper el ciclo de pobreza en Omaha al empoderar a las personas, a las agencias y a las organizaciones para crear una sociedad más equitativa y pacífica. La fundación busca identificar y enfrentar las injusticias institucionales y sistémicas y las brechas que potencian la pobreza, ello a través de ideas e innovación en un cambio social para enfrentar las cuestiones de fondo.

Weitz concluyó con un llamado a todos los asistentes a actuar, reafirmando que no están solos en esta pelea por imaginar un cambio.

El evento continuó con la mención de los delegados que representan los diversos vecindarios y distritos en Omaha, así como de Schuyler, Nebraska City y Young Nebraskans in Action.

Delegados como Evelia Gutiérrez, que representó al Oeste de Omaha, quien llamó a un apoyo continuo de la legislación hacia los jóvenes DREAMers y DACA y a apoyar al Heartland Workers Center.

“Yo pude beneficiarme de la amnistía a través de mi madre quien vino a este país y me trajo a mí y a mis hermanos para buscar un mejor futuro”, dijo Gutiérrez. “Mi madre huyó de la violencia en Michoacán, México. Es por eso que debemos continuar presionando a nuestros representantes

para que apoyen el estado migratorio permanente”.

Gutiérrez también solicitó ayuda para desarrollar aliados en su distrito en el Oeste de Omaha para defender a la comunidad latina en crecimiento en esa área.

“Esta convención es algo diferente a la mayoría”, dijo Abbie Kretz. “El punto era brindar a los delegados que representan a sus vecindarios/ comunidades la oportunidad de enfrentar las necesidades de algunos de los líderes políticos y comunitarios que asistieron. Fue su oportunidad de tener una voz”.

Líderes políticos como el Senador Estatal Tony Vargas, quien representa al Distrito 7, tuvieron el gusto de escuchar en directo a algunos de sus electores. “Yo creo que el Heartland Workers Center realizó un gran evento. Definitivamente estamos viendo como las organizaciones en la comunidad y el activismo llegan a un nuevo nivel gracias a los esfuerzos del Heartland Workers Center”, dijo Vargas. “Yo disfruté poder escuchar lo que lo que apasiona a las personas en sus comunidades”.

El evento resaltó algunos de los lazos entre el Heartland Workers Center y otras organizaciones que luchan por un cambio, como es el caso de Nebraska Civic Engagement Table, Young Nebraskans in Action y Habitat for Humanity.

Amanda Brewer, Directora Ejecutiva y Presidenta de Habitat for Humanity Omaha, expresó su gratitud hacia la alianza de la organización con el Heartland Workers Center.

“El Heartland Workers Center hace un gran trabajo en la comunidad a través de su difusión y trabajo. Rejuvenecer un vecindario requiere de una gran inversión y de la construcción de relaciones”, dijo Brewer. “Habitat proporciona la inversión a través casas y reparaciones, y el Heartland Workers Center se encarga de las importantes relaciones con la comunidad”.

Habitat for Humanity actualmente cuenta con una tienda sobre restauraciones en la esquina de 22nd y Leavenworth para las personas que están buscado adquirir materiales de construcción a precios accesibles. Brewer compartió con el público información sobre el rol activo que ha tomado su organización. “Habitat estará construyendo y renovando 25 casas en el Sur de Omaha durante el siguiente año”, dijo Brewer, desatando el aplauso de los asistentes.

Durante el cierre de la convención, Sergio Sosa, Director Ejecutivo de Heartland Workers Center, extendió un reconocimiento para las comunidades de Schuyler y Nebraska City por realizar el viaje para asistir a la convención, reconociéndoles además por sus esfuerzos de organización. “Debemos continuar organizándonos y registrándonos para votar en nuestras comunidades”, dijo Sosa.

“Continuaremos imaginando e inspirando el cambio”.

he Heartland Workers Center 2nd Biennial Political Convention kicked off last Sunday at the Stockyards exchange building. Over 200 people attended the convention including a number of political and community leaders. The overall theme of the convention: Imagining Change.

The event started with a convocation by Pastors Sarah Dickinson and Sergio Amaya and after the introductions by Master and Mistress of Ceremonies Emiliano Lerda and Abbie Kertz, keynote speaker, Katie Weitz of the Weitz Family Foundation addressed the crowd.

“Our physical safety as well as our basic freedoms as people of color, as immigrants are openly threatened in the light of day. We are here to clamor together to use our voice for a better future, and we see that we are a part of that change,” Weitz said.

Weitz advised the crowd about the importance of being aware of issues and problems that are happening in the community. “We know that the number of minorities is increasing in the state of Nebraska, but this will mean nothing unless we organize ourselves.

We don’t need to look to anyone to do it for us, we can do it. We must believe in this shared vision so fiercely it takes a hold of our hearts, and minds and we must act,” Weitz stressed.

Weitz also underscored the active role the Heartland Workers Center plays in the community. “We must recruit and develop agents of change with the help of the HWC and their strong ties to coalitions. Developing policy will help make change in our community,” Weitz said.

Weitz’s family foundation seeks to break the cycle of poverty in Omaha by empowering individuals, agencies, and organizations to create a more equitable and peaceful society. The foundation seeks to identify and address the institutional and systemic injustices and gaps which fuel poverty through ideas and innovations in social change to address core issues.

Weitz concluded with a call to action for the crowd and readdressed they are not alone in the fight for imagining change.

The event continued with a roll call from delegates representing various neighborhoods and districts in Omaha, as well as Schuyler, Nebraska City and Young Nebraskans in Action.

Delegates like Evelia Gutierrez, who represented West Omaha, called for the continued support of legislation towards DREAMers and DACA youth and supporting the HWC. Gutierrez drew from her firsthand experience coming to the U.S. as an undocumented immigrant.

“I was able to benefit from amnesty through my mother when she came to this country with me and my siblings for a better future.” Gutierrez said. “My mother fled from violence in our native state of Michoacan, Mexico. That is why we must keep pressuring our representatives to support permanent immigration status.”

Gutierrez also asked for help in developing allies in her district of West Omaha to advocate for the growing Latino community there.

“This convention is a little bit different than most,” Abbie Kertz said. “The whole point was to give the delegates representing their specific neighborhoods/communities the opportunity to address their needs to some of the political and community leaders who attended. It was their chance to have a voice.”

Political leaders like State Senator Tony Vargas who represents District 7 was pleased to hear firsthand from some of his constituents. “I think the HWC put on a great event. We are definitely seeing community organizations and activism going to a new level thanks to the efforts of the HWC,” Vargas said. “I enjoyed

The event highlighted some of the ties between the HWC and other organizations fighting for change such as Nebraska Civic Engagement Table, Young Nebraskans in Action and Habitat for Humanity.

Amanda Brewer who is the Executive Director and President of Habitat for Humanity Omaha expressed her gratitude towards her organization’s partnership with the HWC. “The HWC does great work in the community through outreach and engagement. Rejuvenating a neighborhood takes investment and relationship building,” Brewer said. “Habitat provides the investment through houses and repairs, the HWC makes the important neighborhood relationships.”

Habitat for Humanity currently has a restore store on 22nd and Leavenworth streets for people looking for affordable building materials. Brewer shared with the crowd information about the active role her organization has taken. “Habitat will be constructing and renovating 25 houses in South Omaha in the coming year,” Brewer said as the crowd applauded.

As the convention drew to a close Sergio Sosa the Executive Director of the HWC recognized the communities of Schuyler and Nebraska City who traveled just to attend the convention and exemplified them for their organizing efforts. “We must continue to organize and register to vote in our communities,” Sosa said. “We will keep imagining and inspiring change.”

TPS NO LONGER JUSTIFIED FOR CENTRAL AMERICANS IN US

TPS NO SE JUSTIFICA MÁS PARA CENTROAMERICANOS EN ESTADOS UNIDOS

More than 300,000 Central Americans and Haitians living in the United States under a form of temporary permission no longer need to be shielded from deportation, the State Department told Homeland Security officials this week, a few days ahead of a highly anticipated DHS announcement about whether to renew that protection.

On Tuesday, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson sent a letter to acting DHS secretary Elaine Duke to inform her that conditions in Central America and Haiti that had been used to justify the protection no longer necessitate a reprieve for the migrants, some of whom have been allowed to live and work in the United States for 20 years under a program known as Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

DHS has until Monday to announce its plans for roughly 57,000 Hondurans and 2,500 Nicaraguans whose TPS protections will expire in early January. Although most arrived here illegally, they were exempted from deportation after Hurricane Mitch devastated Central America in 1998.

Their TPS protections have been renewed routinely since then, in some cases following additional natural disasters and resulting insecurity.

Congress established TPS in 1990 to protect foreign nationals from being returned to their countries amid instability and precarious conditions caused by natural disasters or armed conflict.

Advocates say removing TPS would be a cruel blow to long-standing, law-abiding immigrants, forcing them to decide between remaining in the country illegally or leaving their homes and families. According to a recent study by the left-leaning Center for American Progress, TPS recipients have nearly 275,000 U.S.-born children.

Más de 300,000 centroamericanos y haitianos quienes viven en Estados Unidos bajo la forma de permiso temporal no necesitan la protección en contra de deportación, según afirmo el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS) esta semana, a pocos días del esperado anuncio del DHS sobre la renovación de esta protección.

The Dakota County Sheriff office has submitted and application to become 287(g) certified by Homeland Security to enforce immigration law, and would be the only County Sheriff in Nebraska that would enforce immigration law. In general, deputized officers are authorized to interview individuals to ascertain their immigration status; check DHS databases for information on individuals; issue immigration detainers to hold individuals until ICE takes custody.

A study by the University of North Carolina School of Law and American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina (ACLU-NC) found that “287(g) encourages, or at the very least tolerates, racial profiling and baseless stereotyping, resulting in the harassment of local residents and the isolation of an increasingly marginalized community.”

Pero gracias a un lucrativo comercio de licor que depende en gran parte de los clientes de la vecina Reservación de Pine Ridge, en Dakota del Sur, donde no hay alcohol, hay más vidas en riesgo en este pueblo no constituido que se ubica en la frontera.

En la esquina suroeste de Dakota del Sur, justo saliendo de la I-90 cerca de los Badlands, hay una pradera extensa y hermosa, interrumpida solamente por rocas y pinos. Esta es la Reservación Pine Ridge, hogar de los Oglala Lakota. Como un grupo de la poderosa tribu Lakota, la mayoría de quienes viven en la reservación tienen linajes repletos de historia, algunos de ellos incluso llegando hasta Caballo Loco, Toro Sentado y Nube Roja. Pero la cultura espiritual y nómada de sus ancestros no es lo que existe hoy en día.

Así lo decretó por voto unánime la Comisión de Control del Licor del Estado de Nebraska un miércoles a las 11:14 a.m., decisión que hizo que los asistentes gritaran de alegría y rompieran en llanto en el cuarto del quinto piso del Edificio de Oficinas del Estado de Nebraska. EDITOR’S NOTE: University of NebraskaLincoln professors Joe Starita, Bill Frakes and Rebekka Schlichting worked with nine journalism students to shine a “blazing light on the darkest spot in Nebraska,” according to Starita. The results of that effort – “The Wounds of Whiteclay” -- not only played a role in the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission’s decision to revoke liquor licenses in Whiteclay on April 31, but it earned the group the prestigious Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award on May 1. We’ve excerpted some highlights of their coverage focusing on the rollercoaster ride that led to the end of alcohol sales in Whitecaly and encourage you to explore all of it at www. woundsofwhiteclay.com.

INTRODUCTION From www.woundsofwhiteclay.com The official population of Whiteclay, Nebraska is 12. But thanks to a lucrative liquor trade that’s heavily dependent on customers from the neighboring, alcohol-free Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, there are many more lives at stake in this unincorporated border town.

In the southwestern corner of South Dakota, just off I-90 as it scrapes by the Badlands, there lies a beautiful expanse of rolling prairie, interrupted only by ridges of rugged rock face and pine. This is the Pine Ridge Reservation—home to the Oglala Lakota. As a band of the powerful Lakota tribe, most living on the reservation have storied lineages, some even tracing back to Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull and Red Cloud. But the spiritual, nomadic culture of their ancestors is not what exists today. It’s been replaced by injustices, tragedies and sorrows spanning more than a century. Chief among them today is a small, unincorporated village on the other side of the South Dakota-Nebraska border.

Whiteclay, Nebraska. 12 people. Four liquor stores. More than 42 million cans of beer sold in the last 10 years.

It fuels alcoholism that affects nearly every family on a reservation where alcohol is illegal.

Here, in the most impoverished county in the United States, it spurs domestic violence, murder, suicide and birth defects that are unprecedented almost anywhere else in the country.

Our mission at the University of NebraskaLincoln is to give readers a view into this remote

This project is the product of an in-depth reporting class of 12 students who spent months researching, traveling and editing to bring you these visuals and stories. The places we’ve been span a doublewide trailer where love and sheer will combat the effects of fetal alcohol syndrome, to dawn breaking over the Nebraska Sandhills where a soldier marches toward becoming Nebraska’s first native senator to the streets of Whiteclay filled with lives who’ve lost their way. In telling these stories, showing what we’ve seen, we hope readers understand the full effect of the relationship between Whiteclay and Pine Ridge.

COMMISSIONERS TO WHITECLAY: THE TAP HAS RUN DRY

For 113 years, the booze has flowed freely in the notorious village of Whiteclay, but the end is near: On May 1, the four beer stores in the ramshackle village of seven people could cease to exist.

So decreed a unanimous vote of the Nebraska State Liquor Control Commission at 11:14 a.m.

Wednesday—a decision that triggered cheers and tears in a standing-room-only hearing room on the fifth floor of the Nebraska State Office Building.

Citing lackluster law enforcement, a deplorable attention to public health and sexual abuse of young girls, the three commissioners voted not to renew the beer store licenses after their April 30 expiration date.

When the decision was announced, Frank LaMere, a Winnebago activist who has fought for 22 years to shut down the four beer stores, began to weep.

“We acted on behalf of those who have no voice,” he said. “And for one day in the history of Nebraska, we gave voice for those who have none.”

The Tap Runs Dry The decision was a dream come true for Sen. Tom Brewer, the first Native state senator in Nebraska history whose district encompasses Whiteclay. After the vote, the Oglala Lakota U.S. Army war veteranturned-politician gave a jubilant fist pump and broke into a wide smile.

“To hear those words come out of their mouth, you just felt this relief,” he said. “It’s almost like you’ve been sick for a long time and now the fever’s broken and you can see some hope for the future.”

For Judi gaiashkibos, executive director of the Nebraska Commission on Indian Affairs, the decision will have a ripple effect. And, she said, it won’t be contained to Native people, or Nebraska, or the United States. It’s international in scope.

“It means that my life matters,” said gaiashkibos, a member of the Ponca tribe. “It means that we don’t have to be invisible. It means that we are being afforded due process. It means that our voice is heard.”

uando comencé a jugar fútbol no imagine que pudiera tener un trofeo en las manos. Solo pensaba en divertirme y estar con mi amigos.

Pero un día uno de mis entrenadores me dijo que yo tenia talento, pero que si no lo pulga, entonces iba a desaparecer. Le hice caso y desde entonces cada juego es una nueva oportunidad de pulir mi talento con el balón…”

Esto dijo Jesús Dueñas, luego de recibir el trofeo al jugador más destacado del Indoor Soccer Tournament de Lincoln Nebraska, ciudad a la que viajaba cada fin de semana, desde Omaha.

Mario Díaz hizo la misma travesía que Jesús, pues formaba parte del mismo equipo de juego y residía también en Omaha. Ambos jugadores compartieron el automóvil por varios meses y hoy comparten también el mismo título.

“Dicen que es la primera ves que dos jugadores se llevan este reconocimiento y para mi es muy especial por que me motiva a seguir entrenando y buscando puertas en este deporte”, comento Díaz.

Los dos galardonados forman parte del equipo Latinos USA que desde el 2015 busca acrecentar sus preseas deportivas, para destacarse como el mejor equipo de la región en el balompié juvenil.

“Cuando se acercaron Jesús y Mario para que los aceptáramos en el equipo no nos dio mucha confianza por que sabíamos que seria difícil que manejaran desde Omaha. Su nivel de juego ya lo habíamos visto anteriormente y quizá por eso decidimos darles una oportunidad, lo cual celebramos haber hecho”, declaró Dave junior, entrenador de Latinos USA. Dicho equipo quedo en segundo lugar del evento citado, siendo destronado por Magic Boys.

De acuerdo con la directiva del evento, el premio al jugador más destacado se entrego considerando la puntualidad, disciplina, chamaraderia y sobre todo buen juego en el terreno de juego.

Para Dueñas y Díaz, este es solo un escalón más en el largo camino que desean tener dentro del terreno de juego. Ambos están buscando también un título universitario en UNL y buscan que sus cualidades deportivas les permitan alcanzar una beca estudiantil para compaginar su amor por el deporte y sus aspiraciones educativas.
