HISTORIA PRINCIPAL

C

uando Lourdes Gouveia, investigadora y profesora en sociología, se unió a la Universidad de Nebraska en Omaha en 1989, esto coincidió con el gran movimiento de inmigración latina que impacto a las comunidades rurales y urbanas.

En ese momento ella no tenía la más mínima idea de que terminaría por inaugurar la Oficina de Estudios Latinos y Latinoamericanos (OLLAS, por sus siglas en inglés) en el 2003. Ella recientemente terminó de fungir como directora del prestigioso centro que ella ha construido.

La idea para OLLAS surgió después de su trabajo en Lexington, Nebraska al documentar los retos y oportunidades que se presentaron por las nuevas personas que llegaban a comunidades que no habían recibido inmigrantes desde hace un siglo. Ella se enfocó en la tendencia laboral de los latinos contratados en el área de empacado de carne. Mientras realizaba un post-doctorado con beca en la Universidad Estatal de Michigan, ella se pudo percatar de las implicaciones globales de las poblaciones móviles.

“En verdad se convirtió en una experiencia transformadora”, recuerda la nativa de Venezuela graduada de la Universidad de Kansas. “Me permitió entender las cosas sobre las que estaba trabajando desde un nuevo nivel. Esto abrió nuevas oportunidades que jamás pensé que tendrían un gran impacto sobre mi vida. Trabajé con compañeros tan motivados como yo que buscaban entender este movimiento tectónico y dramático por el aumento en la inmigración desde Latinoamérica aunado a la recesión económica en los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica”.

Cuando Gouveia regresó de su postdoctorado ella aceptó una invitación para liderar lo que entonces era una asignatura secundaria en Estudios Latinos en UNO. “Yo dije que sí pero con la condición de que explorásemos la posibilidad de algo más grande. Varios de nosotros nos estábamos dando cuenta de que una asignatura secundaria no era suficiente para entender, para educar a nuestros estudiantes, para trabajar con la comunidad sobre cuestiones de esta magnitud”.

Ella lideró un comité que concibió y lanzó OLLAS, además de una carrera en Estudios Latinoamericanos.

“OLLAS fue construido con una clara visión sobre cómo Nebraska y Omaha estaban sufriendo cambios profundos en cuando a la composición de la poblaciones de inmigrantes latinos y de la población latinoamericana.

Ni la universidad ni la comunidad - ni los creadores de las políticas - estaban suficientemente preparados para entender lo significantes que eran esos cambios, ni el impacto que tendrían a largo plazo o bien para responder a ello de una manera informada y racional basada en datos.

El mensaje resonó con las personas en todos los niveles” El capital inicial considerable para hacer de OLLAS una realidad fue aportado por una subvención de $1 millón de dólares por parte del Departamento de Educación de los EE.UU. que el entonces Senador Chuck Hagel ayudó a obtener.

Gouveia comenta que desde un inició OLLAS ha existido como un híbrido, como un centro interdisciplinario que no solamente enseña, sino que también realiza investigaciones y produce reportes de mucho contenido.

“Las agencias comunitarias, los creadores de políticas, los estudiantes y otras personas nos dicen que encuentran un gran valor en los reportes de investigación y en las fichas técnicas que producimos. Eso es parte de lo que hacemos con orgullo. Se realiza con un gran esfuerzo pues requiere de mucho trabajo, de un talento experto y de un gran rigor y nosotros no siempre tenemos a la mano los recursos necesarios. Pero aun así continuamos llevándolos a cabo y esperamos poder expandir esta actividad”.

Ella comenta que OLLAS es completamente diferente a todo lo demás en UNO. “Somos un programa académico pero también somos un proyecto comunitario. Así que constantemente estamos cooperando, discutiendo y conversando con las organizaciones comunitarias, además de con representantes gubernamentales de México y Centroamérica, sobre proyectos que pensamos pueden mejorar el entendimiento sobre estos cambios demográficos. También estamos observando las condiciones socioeconómicas de la población latina y lo que tiene que ver con la inmigración en los EE.UU. o con la participación de los EE.UU. en Latinoamérica”.

OLLAS también juega un papel como defensor.

“Usamos nuestras voces en público, ya sea escribiendo artículos de opinión o realizando reuniones y conferencias con líderes políticos o con oficiales electos. Usamos nuestras investigaciones para lograr que se escuchen nuestras voces y para informar sobre las cuestiones que deberían estar discutiendo los creadores de políticas, como es el caso de la crisis de los refugiados”.

Gouveia dice que la manera en que OLLAS está estructurado “nos permite ser muy maleables, parecido a un grupo de estudios”. Ella continúa agregando: “Nosotros nos definimos como pioneros permanentes, siempre intentando anticipar las preguntas que necesitan de respuestas o los intereses que emergen y que podemos cubrir”.

“Por ejemplo, estamos a punto de lanzar un reporte sobre los cambios en la población latina en la ciudad. ¿Por qué? Porque estamos observando que los latinos no solamente están viviendo en el Sur de Omaha sino por toda la ciudad. Al ir detectando tendencias como estas tratamos de anticiparnos y responder a las preguntas para brindar a las personas de las herramientas necesarias para poder utilizar la información en su trabajo”.

OLLAS ha incrementado el espacio de sus instalaciones y el número de sus miembros de trabajo, incluyendo ahora en sus filas a un coordinador de proyecto, a un coordinador de vinculación comunitaria y a más asociados en investigación. Gouveia dice que OLLAS solamente pudo llegar a existir gracias a la ayuda de muchos colegas, incluyendo a Jonathan Benjamin-Alvarado y Theresa Barron-McKeagney, “quienes compartieron con entusiasmo la misión que estábamos formando”. Ella comenta que OLLAS también recibió el apoyo de universidades extranjeras y de la comunidad filantrópica.

“También hubo algo de resistencia”, agrega. “Es un espacio muy creativo que rompe con todas las convenciones. Como inmigrantes, nosotros creamos un miedo por estar trabajando para romper con la sabiduría convencional. Pero yo pienso que nuestro éxito ha convertido a muchos que inicialmente se mostraron escépticos. Pienso que hemos sido pioneros en modelos que otros han venido a observar para poder aprender de ellos”.

Actualmente se lleva a cabo una búsqueda a nivel nacional para encontrar a su sucesor.

“Me siento bien sobre dejar mi cargo en este momento.

Me siento sorprendida por las personas. Como directora fundadora una no puede quedarse para siempre. Una vez que se ha ayudado a institucionalizar a la organización, entonces es momento de dar paso a la siguiente generación de líderes con visiones e ideas frescas”.

Además, hay investigaciones que ella no puede esperar a realizar. Y no es como si esta profesora emérita se fuera a ir. Ella confirma que continuará “involucrada con OLLAS, pero de una manera diferente”.

W

hen sociology professor and researcher Lourdes Gouveia joined the University of Nebraska at Omaha faculty in 1989, it coincided with the giant Latino immigration wave then impacting rural and urban communities.

Little did she know then she would found the Office of Latino and Latin American Studies or OLLAS in 2003. She recently stepped down as director of that prestigious center she’s built.

The idea for OLLAS emerged after her field work in Lexington, Neb., documenting challenges and opportunities posed by the influx of new arrivals on communities that hadn’t received immigrants in a century.

She focused on the labor trend of Latinos recruited into meatpacking. While doing a post-doctorate fellowship at Michigan State University she came to see the global implications of mobile populations.

“It really did become a transformative experience,” recalls the Venezuela native and University of Kansas graduate. “It gave me a whole new level of understanding of issues I had been working on. It opened opportunities I had no idea we’re going to be so influential and consequential in my life.

These were colleagues as motivated as I was to try to understand this tectonic and dramatic shift going on of increased immigration from Latin America accompanied with an economic recession in the United States.”

When Gouveia returned from her post doc she accepted an invitation to head what was just a minor in Latino Studies at UNO.

“I said yes but with a condition we explore something larger. Many of us were beginning to realize the minor was just not enough of a space to understand, to educate our students, to work with the community on issues of this magnitude.”

She led a committee that conceived and launched OLLAS and along with it a major in Latin American Studies.

“OLLAS was built upon a very clear vision that Nebraska and Omaha in particular was seeing profound changes in the makeup of the Latino immigrant and Latino American population. Neither the university nor the community, let alone policymakers, were sufficiently prepared to understand the significance of those changes and their long-term consequences or respond in any informed, data-driven, rationale way.

That message resonated with people on the ground and at the top.”

Significant seed money for making OLLAS a reality came from a $1 million U.S. Department of Education grant that thenSen. Chuck Hagel helped secure.

From the start, Gouveia says OLLAS has existed as a hybrid, interdisciplinary center that not only teaches, but conducts research and generates content-rich reports.

“Community agencies, policymakers, students and others tell us they find enormous value in those research reports and fact sheets we produce. That is a mainstay of what we do. It’s done with a lot of difficulty because they require enormous work, expert talent and rigor and we don’t always have the resources at hand. Yet we have maintained that and hope to expand that.”

She says OLLAS is unlike anything else at UNO. “We’re an academic program but we’re also a community project. So we’re constantly engaging, partnering, discussing, conversing with community organizations, even government representatives from Mexico and Central America, in projects we think enhance that understanding of these demographic changes.

We’re also looking at the social-economic conditions of the Latino population and what it has to do with U.S. immigration or U.S. involvement in Latin America.”

OLLAS also plays an advocacy role.

“We use our voices in public, whether writing op-ed pieces or holding meetings and conferences with political leaders or elected officials. We use our research to make our voices heard and to inform whatever issues policymakers may be debating, such as the refugee crisis.”

Gouveia says the way OLLAS is structured “allows us to be very malleable, more like a think tank,” adding, “We define ourselves as perennial pioneers always trying to anticipate the questions that need answers or the interests emerging we can fulfill.

“We’re about to put out a report, for example, on the changes of the Latino population across the city. Why? Because we are observing Latinos are not just living in South Omaha but are spread across the city.

As we detect trends like this on the ground we try to anticipate and answer questions to give people the tools to use the information in their work.”

OLLAS has grown in facilities and staff, including a project coordinator, a community engagement coordinator and research associates. Gouveia says OLLAS could only have happened with the help of many colleagues, including Jonathan BenjaminAlvarado and Theresa Barron-McKeagney, “who shared enthusiastically in the mission we were forging.” She says OLLAS has also received broad university support and community philanthropic support.

“There was resistance, too,” she adds.

“It’s a very creative space that breaks with all conventions. Like immigrants we create fear that somehow we’re shaking the conventional wisdom. But I think our success has converted many who were initially skeptical.

I think we’ve pioneered models that others have come to observe and learn from.”

A national search is underway for her successor.

“I feel very good about stepping out at this time. It surprised a lot of people. As a founding director you cannot stay there forever. Once you have helped institutionalize the organization then it’s time to bring in the next generation of leaders with fresh visions and ideas.”

Besides, there’s research she’s dying to get to. And it’s not like this professor emeritus is going away. She confirms she’ll remain “involved with OLLAS, but in a different way.”

NOTICIAS DE INMIGRACIÓN: APOYO COMUNITARIO PARA DAPA ________________________________________________________ Por Liz Codina

E

n noviembre de 2014, el presidente Obama emitió una orden ejecutiva que introdujo Acción Diferida Para Padres de estadounidenses y residentes legales Permanentes (DAPA), desde su introducción, DAPA ha causado controversia entre los estados. De hecho, un grupo de estados se unieron para presentar una demanda en el tribunal de distrito de Nueva Orleans para detener el despliegue de DAPA. Muchas agencias de servicios sociales en todo el país están reuniéndose detrás del programa, ya que ayudaría a muchos inmigrantes atrapados en el limbo.

“Nuestra perspectiva como una agencia que trabaja en la educación y la promoción de servicios sociales, vemos lo que el presidente ha estado tratando de hacer con la acción ejecutiva que aprobó como un esfuerzo para mover realmente la aguja en la participación de las familias inmigrantes, las familias que sin la reforma de inmigración realmente no tienen otra opción,” dice Carolina Quezada,

directora ejecutiva del Centro Latino (LCM). Según Quezada, desde el inicio de la Acción Diferida Para la Infancia Arrivals (DACA) y la introducción de DAPA ha habido mucha oposición y negatividad en los círculos conservadores que no han dejado que la conversación se mueva hacia adelante en el Congreso cuando se trata de la inmigración.

De acuerdo con Quezada la reforma migratoria se necesita desesperadamente en nuestra comunidad y en todas las comunidades en los Estados Unidos. Si DAPA sale de los tribunales los inmigrantes en el país recibirán mucho beneficios necesarios. “Va a permitir que consigan un permiso de trabajo para que no permanezcan en las sombras, van a ser capaces de trabajar legítimamente, tanto como los que están en el programa DACA, que tienen un permiso de trabajo y que son capaces de conseguir un empleo.

Todo es muy válido. Lo que busca hacer DAPA es legitimar el trabajo que muchas familias inmigrantes ya están haciendo,” dice Quezada.

Quezada señala que una gran cantidad de clientes que vienen a la LCM tienen estado mixto, lo que significa que al menos uno de los adultos de la familia están aquí en los Estados Unidos sin documentos, esto significa que estas familias viven con el temor diario de que inmigración puede venir en cualquier momento y deportar a miembros de la familia.

Si más gente y los estados apoyan el programa DAPA Quezada dice “realmente va a restaurar esa sensación de ‘oye el sistema está respondiendo a nuestras necesidades, “y añadió “creo que es importante que las personas sienten que están legitimadas aquí, al igual que pueden conseguir

trabajo legal, que puedan seguir adelante para tratar de mantener a sus familias.”

La Directora Ejecutiva de LCM dice que los funcionarios electos en nuestra comunidad jugarán un papel vital.

“Creo que es tan importante que los funcionarios electos se enfoquen en la comunicación con nuestra comunidad, especialmente con nuestra comunidad de inmigrantes, y que mantengan esas vías de comunicación y diálogo abiertas,” dice Quezada. Según Quezada funcionarios electos deben hacer un esfuerzo para hablar con las familias inmigrantes que viven en sus distritos, al hacerlo les ayudará a entender las luchas diarias que las familias inmigrantes se enfrentan. Quezada anima a los políticos a “mantener la integridad de la familia junta y ayuden a las familias que trabajan duro para que sean bienvenidos, eso es lo que necesitan, tienen que ver el impacto de sus leyes y cómo nos afecta en nuestra vida cotidiana.”

El Centro Latino mantiene la esperanza de que esta legislación algún día ser capaz de ayudar a los inmigrantes en todo el país. La organización local sin fines de lucro ya está tomando medidas para prepararse. “Lo que está en nuestra caseta de gobierno es la educación, vamos a ver cómo servimos a más de los adultos, muchos de ellos pueden ser beneficiarios de DAPA, queremos darles la verificación de inscripción para las clases que toman, en muchos casos tenemos visto que los solicitantes de DACA han solicitado cartas demostrando que están en nuestra GED, programas de ESL,” dice Quezada. Ella agrega que ella y su agencia quiere asegurarse de que dan un montón de oportunidades de educación a los inmigrantes para que estén preparados para la DAPA, quiere asegurarse de que sus clientes están plenamente comprometidos con el proceso.

Según Quezada tenemos que seguir manteniendo las familias inmigrantes en nuestras comunidades bajo el radar, lo que incluye los jóvenes inmigrantes y sus padres. “Tenemos que animar a las nuevas generaciones a sentir sus raíces en sus comunidades,” dijo Quezada.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR DAPA

n November of 2014, President Obama issued an executive order that introduced Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA). Since its introduction, DAPA has caused controversy among the states. In fact, a group of states joined together to file a lawsuit in the New Orleans District Court of Appeals to halt the roll-out of DAPA. Many social service agencies across the country are rallying behind the program as it would aid many immigrants caught in limbo.

“Our perspective as an agency that works on education, advocacy and social services, we see what the president has been trying to do with the executive action that he endorsed as an effort to really move the needle on engaging immigrant families, families who without immigration reform really have no other option,” says Carolina Quezada, Executive Director at Latino Center of the Midlands (LCM). According to Quezada, ever since the initiation of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and the introduction of DAPA, there has been a lot of opposition and negativity among conservative circles that have really stopped the conversation from moving forward in congress when it comes to immigration.

According to Quezada immigration reform is desperately needed in our community and across communities in the United States. If DAPA were to make it out of the court battle, immigrants will receive much needed benefits. “It will allow them to get a work permit so they are no longer in the shadows, they will be able to work legitimately, much as those in the DACA program, who have a work permit, and they are able to get employment. It is all very valid. What DAPA seeks to do is legitimize that work that many immigrant families are already doing,” says Quezada.

Quezada points out that a lot of clients that come to LCM for services are mixed status, which means that at least one of the adults in the family are here in the United States without documents, this means that these families live with the daily fear that immigration can come at any time and deport a family member. If more people and the states were to support DAPA Quezada says “it will really restore that sense of ‘hey the system is responding to our needs,’” adding “I believe it is important to have people feel like they are legitimized here, like they can get work legally, that they can move forward to try and provide for their families.”

The LCM Executive Director says that elected officials in our community will play a vital part. “I think that it is so important that elected officials create communication with our community, with our immigrant community throughout, that they keep those pathways of communication and dialogue open,” says Quezada. According to Quezada elected officials should make an effort to talk to the immigrant families living in their districts, doing so will help them understand the daily struggles that immigrant families face. Quezada encourages policymakers to “keep the integrity of the family together and help foster communities where hard working families are actually welcome, that is what they need to look at, the impact of their laws and how it affects us in our daily lives.”

Latino Center of the Midlands remains hopeful that this legislation will one day be able to help immigrants across the country. The local nonprofit organization is already taking steps to prepare. “What is in our wheelhouse is education, we are going to look at how we serve more of the adults, many of them can be DAPA recipients, we want to provide them with enrollment verification for the classes they take, in many cases we have seen that the applicants for DACA have requested letters proving that they are in our GED, ESL programs,” says Quezada. She adds that she and her agency want to make sure they give plenty of educational opportunities to immigrants so they are prepared for DAPA, she wants to make sure that her clients are fully engaged with the process.

According to Quezada we need to continue to keep immigrant families in our communities on the radar, this includes immigrant youth and their parents. “We need to encourage new generations to feel rooted in their communities,” says Quezada.

casi 16 años de trabajar con ahínco en el Centro Juan Diego, la Directora Ana Barrios se encuentra complacida con los logros alcanzados por su equipo, pero más que nada “por tener la fortuna de seguir presente para ayudar a nuestras familias”.

Barrios recordó que hace aproximadamente una década, “ya teníamos en el Centro varios de los programas que ofrecemos, pero hasta cierto punto había espacio entre una actividad y otra, en cambio hoy ya no es así porque ha crecido mucho la comunidad y con ella han aumentado sus necesidades”.

Ubicado en las calles 31 y Q, el Centro Juan Diego agrupa algunos de los servicios bilingües más importantes que Catholic Charities ofrece gratuitamente o a muy bajo costo, a las familias inmigrantes en nuestra ciudad.

“Yo me siento muy complacida y agradecida con la comunidad de Omaha por su valioso apoyo – recalcó Barrios -, porque son personas que desean que los miembros de su familia y que sus vecinos estén bien, así que siempre hay mucho interés en todo lo que nosotros hacemos”.

Para sacar adelante varios de sus programas, el Centro Juan Diego mantiene una estrecha colaboración con otras agencias e iglesias localizadas en diferentes zonas de la ciudad, no necesariamente en el sur: “Se trata de parroquias que desean ayudar ya sea recogiendo donaciones, comida o haciendo sus propias colectas para entregarnos lo que sea necesario”.

Toda ésa incansable labor realizada a lo largo del año por organizaciones no lucrativas como el Centro Juan Diego, se torna vital durante el invierno cuando las condiciones climáticas son apremiantes, las oportunidades de trabajo se limitan y los padres de familia deben buscan la forma de sobrellevar la temporada de celebraciones consiguiendo los alimentos para las cenas de navidad y año nuevo, así como los regalos para sus hijos.

“Nosotros hemos encontrado que el costo de la comida ha subido demasiado en los últimos 3 ó 4 años, y lo que se compraba antes ahora no se puede adquirir – puntualizó Barrios -, de ahí que en esta época sean tan necesarias las donaciones de productos frescos, lácteos, vegetales o frutas”.

En ése sentido, numerosas son las familias que se acercan al Centro Juan Diego donde Barrios ha comprobado que quienes solicitan los artículos básicos de su despensa, “realmente lo hacen por necesidad” y por lo mismo, “no hay un abuso de ello”.

A propósito cabe señalar que el Centro requiere constantemente de muchos productos que vayan dirigidos sobre todo

a los más pequeños: “Nuestras familias latinas son familias jóvenes y hay una gran demanda de pañales, fórmula y comida para bebés”.

El abastecer el banco de alimentos es apremiante para Barrios, porque si bien es verdad que la participación de todos se reflejará en “una comunidad saludable y segura, alejada de la violencia”, la directora del Centro Juan Diego está segura de que la tarea primordial es “satisfacer las necesidades básicas del ser humano como lo es la alimentación, pues lógicamente después viene todo lo demás como la educación y otros aspectos que igualmente apoyamos”.

Aspectos que están ligados por ejemplo, a la integración social de las familias inmigrantes ya que desde hace varios años el Centro Juan Diego implementó el programa llamado Enriquecimiento Familiar, mismo que evolucionó en el que actualmente conocemos como Fortalecimiento Familiar, dirigido “a personas que llegan a vivir a Omaha por primera vez”, con el fin de lograr que en plazo de 6 a 8 meses conozcan todo el sistema y “se sientan como en casa”.

Otro programa que así mismo repercute directamente en el bienestar familiar y el cual sobresale por sus alcances ya que toca el tema de la violencia doméstica, es el Centro de Latinas, puesto que “educa a la mujer latina sobre cuáles son sus derechos como persona y como mujer”, gracias a su variedad de clases “mismas que nos ayudan a valorar nuestra propia individualidad”. “¡Las mujeres latinas somos brillantes!” concluyó Barrios enfatizando que son ellas justamente las generadoras de nuevas propuestas a través de sus ideas y agentes responsables de cambios positivos, de ahí la gran necesidad de su empoderamiento mediante programas como ése.

Todd R. Schmaderer, Jefe de Policía, dijo en el mensaje de bienvenida que OPD tuvo gran éxito y muchos logros en el 2014 al resolver los crímenes mas violentos de la ciudad, gracias al profesionalismo y dedicación de hombres y mujeres de OPD, y con la asociación de la gran comunidad de Omaha. OPD ha tenido un índice de solvencia en homicidios muy arriba del promedio a nivel nacional por dos años consecutivos.

Las estadísticas del 2014 en Ofensas en Comparación con el 2013 muestra un 24% menos en Homicidios Criminales, un 2% menos en Violación Agravada, 1% mas en Robo y Asalto a Mano Armada, 15% menos en Robos, 3% mas en Robo Agravado, y 2% mas en Robo de Vehículos.

LA OFICIAL KERRIE OROZCO RECIBE OTRO PREMIO El Programa de Atención contra Drogas de Elks presentó el Premio Enrique Camarena el lunes, en memoria de la oficial fallecida Kerrie Orozco, siendo ella la primera mujer en recibir tal premio.

El busto de Enrique Camarena fue otorgado a la familia de la oficial Orozco, así como a representantes del Departamento de Policía de Omaha durante una ceremonia en la Biblioteca W. Dale Clark. El busto estará en exhibición en la librería aproximadamente durante seis meses antes de llevarlo a un lugar permanente.

Cada año, los Elks otorgan el Premio Enrique Camarena, en memoria del agente de la DEA asesinado, a un oficial miembro del orden público por sus extraordinarios esfuerzos por la comunidad.

Orozco, a la edad de 29, murió el 20 de mayo por un impacto de bala cuando ella y su compañero del cuerpo especial de fugitivos estaban tratando de arrestar a un sospechoso. Orozco fue conocida no solo por su trabajo en la línea del deber, sino también por su trabajo voluntario.

PROGRAMS FROM THE JUAN DIEGO CENTER HELP TO COVER BASIC NEEDS AND HIGHLIGHT THE TRANSFORMING ROLE OF WOMEN IN OUR SOCIETY

A

fter almost sixteen years of working hard at the Juan Diego Center, Director Ana Barrios is very pleased with the accomplishments of her team, but most of all “of being lucky enough to still be here to help our families.”

Barrios remembered that close to a decade ago, “we already had several programs on offer at the Center, but back then all activities were a bit more spaced out between sessions whereas nowadays we work almost non-stop because of how the community has grown, thus increasing their needs.”

Located on 31 and Q Sts., the Juan Diego Center provides some of the most important bilingual services that Catholic Charities offers free of charge - or at a very low cost - for immigrant families in our city.

“I feel very pleased and thankful to the community in Omaha for their valuable support,” said Barrios, “ because they are people who wish that their family members and neighbors are doing great, so they’re always very interested in what we have to offer.”

In order to provide the many programs it offers, the Juan Diego Center works closely with other agencies and churches in all areas of Omaha, and not only with those in the South: “We work with churches that wish to help us by collecting donations and food or by doing their own fundraisers to provide to us anything we might need.”

All of this hard work carried out all year long by non-profits such as the Juan Diego Center is even more important during winter time when the weather is harsh, job opportunities are limited and parents are looking for ways to make it through the season and the festivities as they try to secure food for the Christmas and New Year’s celebrations, as well as gifts for their children.

“We have found that the cost of food has increased over the last three to four years, and that the things you managed to purchase back then aren’t as affordable now,” said Barrios. “This is why during this season donations of produce, dairy, vegetables and fruit are even more important.”

Because of this many families come to the Juan Diego Center where Barrios has seen how those who request to be provided with basic items “do that because they truly need them,” and because of this “no one abuses the system.”

The Juan Diego Center is in constant need of many products that target children: “Our Latino families are young, and there’s a huge demand for diapers and baby formula and meals.”

Having a fully stocked food bank is a must for Barrios because, even if the participation of everyone will signal “a healthy and secure society that does not promote violence,” the director of the Juan Diego Center knows that the main task is to “satisfy the basic needs of human beings for things such as having food on the table, it is logical that after that there are other important needs such as education and other areas on which we also offer our support.”

Areas tied to, for example, integrating immigrant families into society. Several years ago the Juan Diego Center implemented a program called Enriquecimiento Familiar (Family Enrichment), and this evolved into their current Fortalecimiento Familiar (Strengthening the Family) program. Said program is “for people who arrive for the first time to Omaha to start a life” so that after six to eight months they get to know the whole system so that for them it “feels like home.”

Another program that has a direct impact on a family’s wellbeing - and that stands out due to its focus on issues such as domestic violence - is the Latinas Center because it “educates Latino women on their rights as people and as women,” all thanks to a large variety of classes that “help is value our own individuality.”

“Latino women are brilliant!” concluded Barrios, emphasizing that Latino women are generating new proposals thanks to their ideas and from being agents responsible for positive change, which is why it is very important that they are empowered by programs such as this one.

OPD 2014 ANNUAL REPORT AVAILABLE The Omaha Police Department on its 2014 annual report includes information explaining the day-to-day activities and accomplishments, and has sections regarding the agency’s budget, recognition of sworn and non-sworn employees, crime statistics, activities of individual units and squads, promotions and retirements, and a section dedicated to the memory of current and former employees who passed away during the year.

Todd R. Schmaderer, Chief of Police, sated on the opening message that OPD experienced a great amount of success in 2014 by solving the city’s most violent crimes, thanks to the professional men and women of the OPD and with partnership of the great community of Omaha. OPD has had a homicide clearance rate well above the national average for two consecutive years.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in partnership with the Highlands Ranch Wal-Mart, is sponsoring the 4th annual ”Christmas for Kids” event. The goal of the program is to provide less fortunate children a chance to receive holiday presents and to build a relationship with local law enforcement.

FALLEN OFFICER KERRIE OROZCO RECEIVES ANOTHER AWARD The Elks Drug Awareness Program presented the Enrique Camarena Award Monday in memory of Omaha Police Officer Kerrie Orozco, becoming the first woman to receive such award.

A bust of Enrique Camarena was given to the family of Officer Orozco as well as to representatives from the Omaha Police Department during a ceremony at the W. Dale Clark Library. The bust will be displayed at the library for approximately six months before moving to a more permanent location.

Each year, the Elks give the Enrique Camarena Award, in memory of a murdered DEA agent, to an American law enforcement officer for extraordinary efforts for their communities. Enrique Camarena was a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent killed in the line of duty in 1985.

Orozco, 29, was killed May 20 by a felon whom she and fellow fugitive task force officers were trying to arrest.

She left and infant daughter and two stepchildren, and her husband. Orozco was known not only for her on-duty work, but also for her volunteer service.
